The crisis of the last year with student protests has made even the richest institutions aware of how much of their presumed wealth can be yanked away from them by a donor class who are increasingly inclined to exert their influence and authority in openly oligarchic ways. The obsession with safety—and the contradictions of that obsession—is as much about financial management as anything else. But that also is a wider sociocultural formation: the American upper middle-class is generally an asset class now who think about safety in the same way as universities both because all institutions with asset-based wealth have to and because they personally have to safeguard their assets in the same fashion, and face some of the same risks from liability exposure. [. . .] Moving away from the caretaker era can’t just be a matter of exposing students to risk and dismantling systems that make safety the mandatory product of an intrusive regime of surveillance and correction. If the people in charge inside the university and outside of it aren’t equally exposed to the natural consequences of their actions and decisions, all this means is forcefully communicating to students—or perhaps all young people—their relative powerlessness and vulnerability. It means deciding that the lesson you really want to teach is that it’s bad to be powerless and thus you should strive in life for power and wealth in order to be beyond consequences. Arguably, if the caretaker era and the bystander era were both aligned with a wider social ideology that was broadly shared across a generation, then this in fact the new ethos of our time—that there is no safety but in power, and that where power believes people are not being sufficiently punished for the things that power disdains, it will find a way to make consequences where there have been none.
bleak essay that nonetheless collects a lot of idle thoughts i've had in one place & puts them together with more coherence than i've ever managed

some stats from last night’s iqiyi scream night 🗣️
WYB basically dominated it all. top trending topic statistics of celebrities and 24-hour & 72-hr keyword cloud as well. All he did was zoom through the red carpet, be his usual likable self and pick up an award he rightfully deserves. This is why IQIYI most likely did their best to make sure he attends because he brings in the audience. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

hmm liu bang being a verified member of the baby-tosser's club is not as cut and dried as i thought, apparently it's only mentioned in xiang yu's biography but is omitted in his. that's a conflict of interest if i've ever seen it. that being said, u gotta admit nothing about han gaozu make this seem at all out of character for him.
#chu han#note to self: don't live ur life in a way that if ur sworn enemy starts a rumour of u pushing ur kids out of a moving vehicle future#societies will go “no that's plausible actually”#i've seen multiple versions of this discussing the moral implications of his actions.#from a confucian standpoint this could actually be framed as a moral and selfless act 1) children are expected to sacrifice themselves#for their fathers. of course leaving two kids to be killed by enemy soldiers would have been unpalatable in any time period.#sacrifice goes down easier when it's “hua mulan does drag” and less “holy shit someone call CPS.”#b) it's similar to an anecdote of a woman being praised for abandoning her own baby to save her brother's baby. because she was#putting aside her personal needs for the “public” good.#which was why luo guanzhong made up that story about liu bei tossing a'dou and how much he praised cao cao for refusing to mourn his dead#son. it's about the personal vs public. you also get similar vibes from bai juyi's poem where the murder of the emperor's#favorite concubine is framed as a noble and selfless act. for HIM. yang guifei is an accessory and her feelings on the matter don't matter#what i don't see discussed is that Confucianism is based on the concept of benevolence; worth and hierarchy#it's top-down. king > duke > husband > wife +children. and it's a theme i keep bringing up. if kings can lose their heavenly mandates#so can dads. the father should be a benevolent individual that is worthy of sacrifice. he should fulfill his role as a protector and mentor#the whole concept taken to it's logical extreme and corrupted by the rigid patriarchal society becomes incredibly self-cannibalizing#...but then again the purpose of the machine is what it does

Thinking about Tsuna having normal little boy interests. Thinking about Little Tsuna watching old videos of stunt men and falling in love. Thinking about little Tsuna going further and further back because he wants to see more and he has pretty unlimited internet access. Thinking about little Tsuna finding a stunt man in all stunning purple and declaring him his hero. Thinking about little Tsuna playing pretend and declaring he’s the “Great Skull-sama”.
Thinking about the arcobaleno cursed in the bodies of their preteen selves. Thinking about Skull wandering like he always does, just drifting from one place to the next, untethered and distant with nothing but a motorcycle and Oodaku to call his own.
Thinking about Skull hearing a little voice claim his name through tears and moving before he can think about it.
(It’s not hard, even for him, to recognize the little Sky. It’s not like they did a very good job at hiding him even with his flames locked away.)
Skull steps in and chases the bullies off and Tsuna takes one look at his hair and makeup before shrieking and trying to tackle him in a hug. (He can’t remember the last time someone was excited to see him. Before the pacifier certainly. Before he was pulled from the world he knew, from his territory and told to find his way in a whole new life that didn’t make sense with a body that no one would take seriously. (He hadn’t been much older when he was cursed, just shy of his nineteenth birthday if he remembers correctly, but at least he was considered an adult in most cultures.))
Tsuna drags him home and Skull? He takes one look at Tsuna’s mother’s vacant eyes and the bruises poorly hidden by Tsuna’s jacket from kids just like the ones he had driven away earlier and decides he can stay a while, if only to protect the forgotten spare of a bloodline. A task that only gets more complicated when it becomes apparent that his little Sky wont stay forgotten or a spare forever.

You know, it amazes me how functional Ranma is when you consider how dysfunctional his Family is. Genma is a lying, cheating, conman who would literally sell his own kid to the lowest bidder, just to steal Ranma back later and do it all again. Genma's master Happosai, is a literal nigh immortal hellspawn that sexually harasses women on a daily basis because it's what keeps him tethered to this realm. Ranma's mother Nadoka is objectively worse because while Genma shows he does actually care for Ranma in his weird warped way, Nodoka loves the "idea" of Ranma that's she's crafted in her head of him. Because the first time her child is brought up in conversation it's immediately followed by asking if he is "manly" because and I almost forgot to add this part, when Genma tried to take Ranma on his martial arts journey as a toddler, she only accepted because Genma had signed a su*cide pact (Genma is a con man but also an idiot) that stated that if he couldn't make Ranma a "man amongst men" they would both commit seppuku (ancient ritual su*cide) and sealed it with a finger painting mark Ranma had made on it with her agreeing to lop off their noggins so it wouldn't be dragged out. So now she has spent almost Ranma's whole life carrying around the family sword so that when she sees him again she can judge if he meets her standard of "manliness" because if he doesn't she feels duty bound to force them to carry out the pact, despite the fact that Ranma who looked to be 4-5 years old had no concept of what he was agreeing to. That's not even including all the physical and mental trauma Ranma has gone through along his journey. So the fact that despite all these things he's still managed to be a kindhearted kid whose a bit of a narcissist is quite frankly a miracle.
