Chapter 1 The Haunted

(Note: They translate the Chapter's name as "The Haunted", which is a legitimate translation, but in the English localization the verb used is typically translated as "Inspirited" instead.)

Whisper: もうケータくん！退屈だっていうならどこかお出かけしましょーよ！ Now, Nate! If you say you're bored, why not go somewhere outside?

Keita (Nate): ん〜？でもさー今日はとくに暑いしまた明日かな〜。 Hm...? But, you know... Today's really hot, so maybe tomorrow.

Jibanyan: ニャ〜ン？そんな外へ行きたいんだったらウィスパーだけで行ってこいニャン。 Nyaaan? Whisper, if you wanna go outside that bad, you can go on your own, nyan.

Keita (Nate): あっ外へいくんだったらさついでにアイス買ってきてー。 Ah, if you're going outside buy me some cold ice cream.

Jibanyan: ニャハ♪ オレっちの分もつめたーいアイスよろしくニャ〜ン！ Nyaha ♪ Yeah, get some cooold ice cream for me too, nyaan!

Whisper: ちょっとぉー！なーんで私がアイスを買いに行く事になっているんですー！？ Wait! Why am I supposed to go and buy ice cream now?!

Mom: ケータ〜？ちょっと頼みがあるんだけどー。 Keita? I need your help with a little something.

Whisper: ほらほらお母さまがお呼びのようですからお話を聞きに１階へ行ってみましょう。 Listen, your mother seems to be calling for you, so why don't you go downstairs and talk to her?

(Tutorial )

街の中を歩きまわろう！ Walk around town!

Whisper: まずは基本中の基本！移動するときは（L）Lスティックを動かしましょう！ First, the basics of the basics! To move, use the Left Stick!

Whisper: （B）長押しでダッシュをすればもっと速くはしれます！（B）をちょんっと押せばジャンプもできますよ！ If you hold (B) to Dash, you can move faster! If you tap (B), you can jump!

Whisper: みづらいときは（R）Rスティックで視点変更できます。うしろの視点に戻すときは［L］でリセットできますよ。 When you have trouble seeing, you can change the camera angle with the Right Stick. To return the camera behind you, reset it with ［L］.

Keita (Nate): お母さん何の用だろう？ I wonder what Mom wants?

Whisper: さっそく１階に行ってお母さまに聞いてみましょう！ You should go downstairs post-haste and talk to your mother!

Talking to Mom

Mom: じつはねちょっとおつかいをたのみたいの。 I actually need you to run a little errand for me.

Whisper: おやこれはいい機会ですねぇ。お母さまのおつかいで気分転換しましょう！ My, what a great opportunity this is. Running this errand for your mother will be a change of pace!

Keita (Nate): う〜んでも… 今日は得に暑いから外に出るとかヤダよ〜…。 Uhh, but... It's so hot today, I don't wanna go outside...

Mom: あっそうだ！おつりでアイス買ってきてもいいわよ？ Oh, right! How about you get to buy some ice cream with the change?

Keita (Nate): えっアイス！？やったー！！ Wha- ice cream?! Yay!!

Jibanyan: アイス！！ケータ！オレっちの分もアイス買ってきてニャーン！ Ice cream! Keita! Buy some ice cream for me too, nyaan!

Whisper: まったく… そんなに言うならアナタも来ればいいじゃないですか…。 Honestly now... You might as well come along yourself, you know...

Jibanyan: ニャッ？もちろん行かないニャン！ Nya? Of course I'm nyot going, nyan!

Keita (Nate): わかったよお母さん！何を買ってくればいいの？ Got it, Mom! What do you want me to buy?

Mom: ありがとうケータ〜！それじゃあ卵と牛乳を１つずつお願いね♪ Thank you, Keita! Then, please get some eggs and milk ♪

妖怪パッドでいろいろチェック! Check lots of stuff with the Yo-kai Pad!

Whisper: 街の中などで（X）を押すと妖怪パッドを開けます。妖怪パッドではいろんなアプリを使えますよ！ When you press (X) inside a town or the like, the Yo-kai Pad will open. With the Yo-kai Pad, you can use many Apps!

Going Outside

Keita (Nate): やっぱりおつかい行くのやめとこうか…？ Maybe we shouldn't go on this errand after all...?

Whisper: まあまあ、がんばれば冷たいアイスが待ってますよ！ Come now, if you try hard, the cold ice cream will await you!

At Yoroz Mart (Everymart)

Shopkeeper: いらっしゃいませー！なんでもアリのヨロズマートです！ Welcome! We at Yoroz Mart have everything!

Keita (Nate): えーっとお母さんからたのまれた物は… Ummm... Mom asked me for...

Whisper: ケータくん！アイスを買うのもお忘れずに！ Keita! Do not forget to buy the ice cream!

Text Box: ケータは１０００円をわたして卵と牛乳を買った！ Keita handed over 1000 yen, and bought Eggs and Milk!

Keita (Nate): そんなにお腹が空いたんだったらさっき買ったアイスいま食べちゃう？ If you're that hungry, why don't you eat the ice cream I bought right now?

Whisper: ああああ… アイス…！！これはぜーんぶ私のモノでうぃすー！！！ A-ahhh... Ice cream...!! It's all mine, whis!!!

Keita (Nate): えええ〜っ！？オレのアイスー！！ Whaaat!? My ice cream!!

Keita (Nate): どうしたのウィスパー！？とにかく追いかけないと…！ Why, Whisper?! I gotta go after him...!

Keita (Nate): ちょっとウィスパー！なにやってんの！ Hang on, Whisper! What are you doing?!

Whisper: うっうううう〜…！ Urgh... Urrghhh...!

Whisper: ひぃぃぃ〜もぉぉぉ〜じぃぃぃ〜！！ SOOOO HUUUUNGRYYYY!!

Keita (Nate): うわっ！ホントにおかしいって！ Uwahh! This really is weird!

Keita (Nate): 絶対妖怪のしわざだ！妖怪ウォッチでサーチしてみよう！ This has to be the work of a Yo-kai! I'll search with the Yo-kai Watch!

Keita (Nate): やっぱりひも爺がとりついてたんだ！ So Himo-jī was inspiriting him!

Summoning Song Voice: ピリチー SHOW-KAN！ Summoning Pretty! (Summoning Charming!)

Jibanyan: ジバニャン! Jibanyan!

Jibanyan: ってなんで外に呼ぶニャーン！！ Wait, why did you call me outside, nyan?!

Whisper: ひひもじいぃぃ…！！ S-So hungryyy...!!

Jibanyan: ニャッ！ウィスパーなにやってるニャン？ Nya! What's Whisper doing, nyan?

Keita (Nate): ジバニャン！ひも爺を追いはらって！ Jibanyan! Go get Himo-jī !

Keita (Nate): このままじゃウィスパー全部アイスを食べられちゃうんだって！ If this keeps up, Whisper's gonna eat all of the ice cream, you know!

Jibanyan: ニャニャにぃー！？それを早く言うニャン！ Wha- What the nya?! Why didn't you say so sooner, nyan?!

Jibanyan: あのアイスオレっちのものニャン！ケータ！やるニャン！ That's my ice cream, nyan! Keita! Let's get 'em, nyan!

(Tutorial)

ウォッチャーと妖怪のバトル Battle with Watcher and Yo-kai

Jibanyan: バトルでは妖怪ウォッチの使い手『ウォッチャー』とオレっちたち妖怪が力をあわせて戦うニャンよ！ In battle, the "Watcher" who uses the Yo-kai Watch and we Yo-kai join forces and fight together, nyan!

Jibanyan: 敵の妖怪とバトルはアクションバトルだニャン！いつもみたいに（L）Lスティックで移動するニャンよ！ A battle with enemy Yo-kai is an Action Battle, nyan! Like usual, move around with the Left Stick, nyan!

Jibanyan: 敵の妖怪には（Y）で『こうげき』だニャン！何度も押すと連続でアタックできるニャンよ〜！ You "Attack" enemy Yo-kai with (Y), nyan! You can press it many times to attack over and over, nyan!

Jibanyan: もちろん敵の妖怪も『こうげき』してくるニャン…！ダメージを受けたら残りのHPには注意だニャン！ Of course, enemy Yo-kai will "attack" too, nyan...! When you take damage, keep an eye on your remaining HP, nyan!

Jibanyan: バトル中にも（B）長押しでダッシュできるニャン！（B）をちょんっと押すとサッと回避ができるニャンよ！ When in battle, you can also Dash by holding (B), nyan! If you tap (B), you can dodge swiftly, nyan!

(During the Battle)

Jibanyan: さあケータ！いっしょに戦うニャンよ！！ Alright, Keita! Let's fight together, nyan!

Jibanyan: （Y）で妖気ピコハンを使うニャン！ガンガン攻撃しちゃうニャ〜ン！ Use your Yo-ki Squeaky Hammer with (Y)! Go for a pounding attack, nyaan!

("Yo-ki" is basically Yo-kai energy, and is usually translated as "Aura" in the English version.)

Whisper: あ… あれ？私は今までいったい何を…？ H... Huh? What have I been doing...?

Keita (Nate): ふぅ… よかった〜。いつものウィスパーにもどったみたい！ Phew... Good... Looks like Whisper's back to normal!

Jibanyan: バトルしたからあっちーニャン…！もうここでアイス食べたいニャ〜ン！ I'm all hot from battling, nyan...! Now I wanna eat the ice cream right here, nyaan!

Keita (Nate): あーキーンと冷たくて最高〜！！ Ahh, crunchy and cold is the best!!

Whisper: ううう… まさか私のアイスだけひも爺に食べられちゃってたとか… Ugh... I can't believe that only my ice cream was eaten by Himo-jī...

Whisper: ショーーーーーック！！ I am shocked, SHOCKED, I say!!

Back Home

Mom: おかえりなさいケータ。こんな暑い中ありがとうね！ Welcome back, Keita. Thank you for going despite the heat!

Keita (Nate): ううん！はうこれでバッチリでしょ？ No problem! Here, this should be all, right?

Text Box: 卵と牛乳をお母さんに手わたした！ Handed over the Eggs and Milk to Mom!

Mom: あっ！そういえばさっき近くでねフミちゃんと会ったわよ。 Ah! That reminds me, I just ran into Fumi nearby.

Fumika (Katie): 「偶然」…？ここ… わたしの家の前なんだけど…。 "Coincidence"...? I'm... right in front of my house, though...

Keita (Nate): あっ…！？ Ah...?!

Keita (Nate): そ… そうだよね〜もうオレってば何言ってるんだろうアハハハ…。 Oh... Oh yeah! Man, what am I saying, Ahahaha...

Fumika (Katie): でもケータくんに会えてわたしうれしいな♥ But, I'm really glad to see you, Keita ♥

Keita (Nate): （くぅぅぅぅ〜！やっぱりカワイイ〜！！） (Hnnng! She's really cute!!)

Fumika (Katie): じつはねわたし… ケータくんに会いに行こうと思ってたの。 You see, I... I was thinking about going to see you.

Keita (Nate): ええっ！なんでなんで！？ What?! Why?!

Fumika (Katie): それは… その… ケータくんにどうしても伝えたいことがあって… It's... umm... There's something I really want to tell you...

Keita (Nate): 伝えたいこと…？ Tell me...?

Fumika (Katie): ケータくんどうしたの？わたしの話… 興味…… ない…？ What's wrong, Keita? Are you... not interested...?

Keita (Nate): ううんそんなことないよ〜！ No, no, that's not it!

Keita (Nate): ちょっとぉー何なの？べつに変なトコとか無いんですけど？ What the heck? There's nothing weird going on?

Whisper: ししかし… 今たしかにフミちゃんから妖気が… B-but... I'm sure there just was Yo-ki around Fumi...

Jibanyan: ニャー！ケータ！うしろ！うしろーーーー！！ Nyah! Keita! Behind you! Behind youuu!!

Fumika (Katie): ケータくん…？ Keita...?

Fumika (Katie): そっか… わたしのつまんない話��んか… 聞くだけ… 時間のムダ…だもんね…？ I get it... You don't got time... for the boring things I have to say... right...?

Keita (Nate): いやいやいや！そんなこと全然ないからー！！ No, no, no! Not at all!!

Keita (Nate): もぉー！ホントにジャマしないでよ！今とっても大事な話をしているんだからさー！ Seriously! Don't get in my way! This is really important right now!

Jibanyan: ニャッ！またフミちゃんから妖気がー！ Nya! There's Yo-ki around Fumi again!

Keita (Nate): ハイハイ… スゴイスゴイ。そもそも何でフミちゃんから妖気が… Yeah, yeah... That's real awesome and stuff. There's not even a reason why there'd be any around her.

Whisper: じゃあ妖怪ウォッチで周りサーチしてくださいなそれでぜーんぶ解決しますからー！！ The would you please search the area with the Yo-kai Watch! That should resolve all of this!!

Text Box: モノマネキンを見つけた！ Found Monomanekin!

Monomamekin (Mimikin): まねまねキンキンー！ Manemane kinkin!

Keita (Nate): ええ〜！フミちゃんが妖怪〜！？ Huhh?! Fumi is a Yo-kai?!

Whisper: ほーら見てごらんなさい！我々が言ったとおりじゃあーりませんか！！ Well, would you look at that! Exactly as we have been telling you, is it not?!

Whisper: この妖怪はモノマネキン！人に化けてものまねをする妖怪でうぃす！ This Yo-kai is Monomanekin! It's a Yo-kai who turns into people and mimicks them, whis!

Monomamekin (Mimikin): いっけねバレちゃったかー。 Oh, shoot, you found me out.

Monomamekin (Mimikin): んじゃバイバイマネキ〜ン！ Well then, Bye-bye-manekin!

Jibanyan: あーっ！モノマネキンのヤツ逃げちゃったニャン！ Ah! That Monomanekin ran off, nyan!

Whisper: ケータくん！どうします？追いかけてこらしめちゃいますか！？ Keita! What will you do? Will you chase it?!

Keita (Nate): 本物のフミちゃんをさがし出すんだ！このままじゃオレはおわれない！！ I'm gonna look for the real Fumi! I'm not letting it end like this!!

Whisper: ちょちょちょ… ケータくん？ Hey, hey... Keita?

Keita (Nate): フミちゃん！待っててねー！！君のことすぐに見つけるからーーー！！！ Fumi! Wait for me!! I'll find you soon enough!!!

Jibanyan: ケータのヤツ… ヤケになっちゃってるニャン…。 That Keita... He's getting desperate, nyan.

(At this point they quickly show off how picking up items in the overworld has been streamlined. Text boxes no longer show up every time you pick something up, you just get a quick notice on the side.)

Still Looking for Fumika (Katie)

Fumika (Katie): あっケータくん！こんな所でどうしたの？ Ah, Keita! What are you doing here?

Keita (Nate): いやー偶然フミちゃんを見かけたからちょっと何してるのかな〜と思って。 Oh, I just saw you by coincidence, and was wondering what you were doing.

Jibanyan: めっちゃさがし回ってクセによく言うニャン。 He keeps saying that, even though he's been looking all over, nyan.

Keita (Nate): と… ところでフミちゃんこそここで何かしてたの？ S... So, what are you doing here, Fumi?

Fumika (Katie): 何って… ただのお散歩だよ。 What am I doing...? I'm just going for a walk.

Fumika (Katie): 夏休みの宿題をやってたんだけど息抜きに外を歩きたいなと思って！ I've been doing my homework for summer vacation, but I felt like taking a break from it and taking a walk outside!

Keita (Nate): （カワイイだけじゃなくてしっかりしてる！ということは！！） (She's not just cute, she's also sensible! Which means...!!)

Fumika (Katie): まちがいなく本物のフミちゃんだ！！ No doubt, you're the real Fumi!!

Fumika (Katie): マネェ？どうういこと？ Mane? What do you mean?

Jibanyan: ニャ？「マネェ」…？ Nya? "Mane"...?

Keita (Nate): 大丈夫！今度こそ本物のフミちゃんを見つけてみせうから！！ It's fine! Next time I'll find the real Fumi, you know!!

Keita (Nate): さあ行こう！本物のフミちゃんをさがしに！！ Alright, let's go! Let's look for the real Fumi!!

Jibanyan: ある意味たくましいニャン…。 In a sense, he's tough, nyan.

Keita (Nate): フミちゃ〜ん！オレはここにいるよ〜！！ Fumi! I'm right here!!

Whisper: おおお… すっごい執念でうぃす…。 Ohhh... He has got it bad, whis...

Jibanyan: またグーゼンとか言ってるニャン…。ホント白々しいニャンね…。 He said coincidense again, nyan... What a terrible liar, nyan...

Whisper: 「偶然会ったね」パターンのアイサツがもうネタ切れなんですよきっと…。 This "met by coincidence" line makes me believe he is already out of ideas...

(During the Battle)

Whisper: （X）で『わざ』発動！強力な攻撃ができますよ！ Activate "Moves" with (X)! You can do powerful attacks!

Whisper: 『わざ』は［R］を押すたびに切り替えができますよ！ You can switch between "moves" when you press［R］!

Whisper: YPが減ったら（ZR）長押して妖気を吸いと〜るのです！ If your YP gets low, hold (ZR) to Absorb Yo-ki!

Keita (Nate): もう！モノマネキンってばフミちゃんのモノマネしすぎだよ！！ Geez! Mimicking Fumi is too far, Monomanekin!!

Monomamekin (Mimikin): マネェ… わかったよー。 Mane... Got it.

Fumika (Katie): わたしたち『まだ』そんな仲じゃないもんね…？ We aren't at that close "yet", aren't we...?

Keita (Nate): えっまだ…？ Wh... "yet"...?

Fumika (Katie): うふふふ今度会う時が楽しもね♪ 未来のダーリン♥ Ehehehe, I can't wait for the next time I see you ♪ My future darling ♥

Jibanyan: アイツ最後までフミちゃんの姿で…。ケータくんのことからかい過ぎニャン。 Man, in that Fumi form, too... Just had to keep teasing Keita all the way, nyan.

Whisper: おや？妖怪パッドに着信でうぃす。どうやら新しいニュースが入ったようですね〜。 Oh? There's a notification on the Yo-kai Pad, whis. Looks like some news came in.

Whisper: 「衝撃スクープ！おおもり山に妖怪たちが大集結！その先にはまさかのお宝が！？」という記事が…！ It's an article which reads:"Shocking Scoop! Countless Yo-kai gather at Ōmori Mountain! Could there be a treasure there?!"

Whisper: この波に乗りおくれないよう私たちもおおもり山へ行ってみましょう！ Why don't we jump on that bandwagon, and go to Ōmori Mountain to see for ourselves?

(Kyuppī/Eyepo seems to work exactly the same as in previous games.)

Whisper: ムッ…！この付近でなにやらあやしい気配を感じます！！ Ack...! I'm sensing some kind of suspicious presence nearby!!

Whisper: ケータくん！この辺りを妖怪ウォッチで調べてみてください！ Keita! Please check the surrounding area with the Yo-kai Watch!

Old Lady: あら神殿にお参りにいくのかい？階段が多いから気をつけるんだよ。 Oh dear, are you visiting the shrine? There are a lot of stairs, so be careful.

Sunao (Sandmeh): うんなんでもガシャの大当たりとして追加されたのが『新しい妖怪ウォッチ』らしいんだよねー。 So, it looks like they added a "new Yo-kai Watch" as the Yo-kai Gasha's jackpot, right.

Whisper: あっ！あああ…新しい妖怪ウォッチですってー！？うぉー！これは並ぶしかないでうぃすー！！ Ah! A-a-a-a.. A new Yo-kai Watch, you say?! Whoah! Now we HAVE to get in line, whis!!

Sunao (Sandmeh): でもさー当たりを引いたのって今のところ誰もいないらしいんだよねー。 But you know, seems that no one at all got a win yet, right.

Keita (Nate): へぇ〜それじゃあそろそろ当たりが出るこましれないね。 Oh? Then a win should pop up pretty soon, no?

Whisper: なっ…！？それは大変！ライバルに先を越される前に何とかしないと！ Wha...?! That's a problem! We can't let the competition get ahead!

Whisper: ケータくん！今すぐこの行列に並びま… Keita! Let's get into line right a...

Jinmenken (Manjimutt): ふざけないでくさいよォォ！！こんなのイカサマじゃないですかっ！！ Stop messing around!! This is cheating!!

Baku: おやおやイカサマとは聞き捨てならんな。ワシらがいったい何をしたと言うんじゃ？ Oh dear me, we can't have you say that. What did you say we're doing?

Jinmenken (Manjimutt): とぼけるんじゃないですよ！さっきから他の妖怪を眠らせて順番ぬかしてるでしょう！ Do not play dumb! For while, you've been putting other Yo-kai to sleep and switching up the order of the line!

Baku: はて？みな徹夜で並んでつかれて眠ってしまったのではないかのぉ〜。 Oho? Everyone was standing in line all night, it's no wonder they would be tired and fall asleep.

Baku: ん〜？盗み聞きとはまったくマナーが悪いのぅ。 Hm? Eavesdropping, are you? My, what terribles manners you have.

Keita (Nate): いやいやいや！順番を抜かすそっちこそマナー違反でしょ！！ Uh-uh! Cutting in line is what's bad manners!!

Jibanyan: そうニャン！そうニャン！！ Yeah, nyan!

Baku: ゴチャゴチャとうるさいのぉ〜。なんならお主らも眠らせてやろうか？ So noisy and rambunctious... We oughta put you to sleep too, no?

Baku: もちろん力ずくでな…！ By force, of course...!

操作やターゲットをチェンジしよう Switch Control and Targets

Whisper: バトルでは人間のウォッチャーだけでなくともだち妖怪の操作もできちゃうんです！ In battle, you can not only control the human Watcher, but also the Yo-kai friends!

Whisper: バトル中に(↑)(↓)を押せば妖怪の操作にチェンジ！もちろんウォッチャーに戻すこともできますよ。 If you press (↑)(↓) during battle, you switch to controlling Yo-kai! And of course, you can go back to the Watcher, too.

Whisper: また敵の妖怪は私たちと同じように複数のメンバーでおそってくることがあるます。 Enemy Yo-kai can of course may appear with multiple party members, just like us.

(During the Battle)

Whisper: 妖怪で戦いたいなら (↑)(↓)でチェンジできます！ If you wish to fight as a Yo-kai, switch with (↑)(↓)!

Baku: 今回　行列に並んでいたみんなに迷惑をかけてしまったのでな。 We caused everyone in line so much trouble, after all.

Whisper: バトル中に時間がすぎていくと妖怪のひっさつゲージがたまっています！ As time passes during the battle, the Yo-kai's Special Gage (Soul Meter) will fill up!

Whisper: ひっさつゲージが最大までたまると（X）＋（A）当時押しで妖怪がグレート化！一時的に強くなるます！ When the Special Gage is filled completely, press（X）＋（A）at the same time, and the Yo-kai will go through a Great Change! They'll temporarily be stronger!

Whisper: グレート化しているあいだにさらに（X）＋（A）当時押しでひっさつわざが使えます！ While in a Great Change, press（X）＋（A）together once more to use your Special Move!

Keita (Nate): あれ？開かない…。 Huh? It won't open...

Jibanyan: ニャ？おかしいニャンね〜。さっきひも爺開けてたニャンよ？ Nya? That's weird, nyan. Himo-jī just opened it, nyan?

Jibanyan: このトビラ… 『カギ』でもかかってるのニャ〜ン？ This door... Is there a "key" for it, nyaan?

Keita (Nate): 『カギ』…？ "Key"...?

Keita (Nate): もしかして… Maybe...

Whisper: おや？それはさっき妖怪ガシャから出てきたカギじゃないですか。 Oho? Isn't that the key that just came out of the Yo-kai Gasha.

Whisper: いやいやいや… Well, I never...

Whisper: いくら何でもそんな得体のしれないカギなんか�� 開くワケが… There is just no way it would open with a key that is as nondescript as...

Keita (Nate): うわっホントに開いた…！ Uwahh, it really opened...!

Whisper: ええええええ〜！？そんなバカな〜！！ Whaaaaaaat?! That can't be!!

Jibanyan: ケータケータ早く中に入ってみようニャ〜ン！！ Keita! Keita! Let's hurry and look inside, nyan!!

Keita (Nate): うんいくよ…。 Yeah, let's go...

On the Other Side of the Door

Keita (Nate): おじゃましま〜す… Excuse me...

Jibanyan: ここ… どこニャン？ Where... are we, nyan?

Whisper: うーん… 人間界のようですけど… Hmm... It looks like the Human World, but...

Keita (Nate): フツーの公園だよね…？ It's an average park, right...?

Whisper: いやはやいったいどんな恐ろしい場所に出るのかと思うきや… And here I was wondering in what sort of terrifying place we would end up...

Keita (Nate): なんか意外とフツーだったね…。 It's sorta surprisingly average, I guess...

Keita (Nate): しょうがないなぁ… じゃあ帰っておやつでも食べようか。 Nothing we can do... Let's just go home and grab some snacks.

Keita (Nate): うそっ！？トビラが…！ Oh no?! The door...!

Jibanyan: ニャニャ！？いつの間にか閉まっちゃってるニャン！ Nyanya!? When did it close, nyan?!

Keita (Nate): ん？ Hm?

Whisper: え… えーっと…… Er... Ermm...

Whisper: 私なにかイヤな予感がするんですけど…… Somehow, I'm getting a bad feeling...

Jibanyan: わ… わかってるニャンね！？ L... Listen, nyan!

Jibanyan: せーの！で振り向くニャンよ！？ We'll turn around on the count of three, alright, nyan?!

Keita (Nate): ううん…！いくよ…！？ Y-yeah...! Realy...!?

Keita (Nate): って妖怪ウォッチ！！？ ...a Yokai Watch!!?

Keita (Nate): ハ… ハイ！ O... Okay!

Natsume: 大丈夫！私たちもついてるから！ It'll be fine! We're here with you!

Natsume: いっしょにがんばろ！ Let's give it our all!

Keita (Nate): やっぱオレも〜！！？ Me too!!?

(During the Battle)

Keita (Nate): ふぅ〜助かったけどあのお姉さんって…？ Phew... We're saved, but who's that girl...?

Jibanyan: ニャ〜ンか誰かに似ってるよーな感じはするけどニャーン…。 I kiiinda feel like she reminds me of someone, nyan...

Whisper: おやジバニャンも…ですか？じつは私もそんな気が…。 Oh, Jibanyan... you, too? Truthfully, I feel the same way...

Keita (Nate): ふ〜終わった… Phew... It's over...

Jibanyan: つかれたニャ〜ン I'm tired, nyan.

Whisper: おみごと！ Well done!

Natsume: ねえ君！！ Hey, you!!

Natsume: それ妖怪ウォッチだよね！ That's a Yo-kai Watch, right?

Keita (Nate): ううん… Y-yeah...

Natsume: やっぱり！ I knew it!

Natsume: 君が私の…！ You're really my...!

Natsume: お父さん！！ Dad!!

Keita (Nate): …………え？ ...what?

Keita (Nate): えーーーっ！！！？ Whaaat!!!?

Jibanyan: ニャンですとぉお！？ What the nya?!

　翌朝、目覚まし時計の音でケータは目を覚ました。午前6時。土曜日にこんな早起きをすることは滅多にない。いつも通り目を閉じたままフミちゃんに服を着せ替えてもらう。「友達と遊びに行くから帰りは夕方になるって、そう言ってね」ケータがドアの前で立ち止まると、フミちゃんは「ちゃんと言える？」と念を押した。「うん……」ケータは浮かない顔で我が家を出た。

　天野家での朝食を終えると、フミちゃんは木霊家の前までケータを迎えに来ていた。「ケータじゃねーか」呼びかけられて振り返ると、クマとカンチと目が合う。「フミちゃんとデート？」彼らの目には、ケータがフミちゃんの家の前でフミちゃんを待っているように映るのだろう。「デート？　まさか」フミちゃんはついいつもの癖できっぱり否定してしまった。「だってお前、いつも何かにつけてフミちゃんを遊びに誘おうとしてるじゃんか」「お待たせ……あ、クマとカンチ」玄関を出てきたケータが、二人を見つける。「僕たちこれから温水プール行くんだけど、一緒に行かない？」「女子たちも来るってよ」そういえばサトちゃんとミカちゃんからも誘われて、風邪を理由に断ったことをケータは思い出す。彼らの言葉に、フミちゃんは飛び上がりそうになるほど青褪めた。「プールか、いいな……」ケータがそう言いかけたところで、フミちゃんは慌ててケータの腕を引っ張る。「ごめん！　これから用があるから、またね！」早口で言い切って、フミちゃんはケータを引きずるように家の前を離れた。「……なんだ？　ケータの奴……あいつそんなプール嫌いだっけ？」「そんな話聞いたことないなあ」遠ざか��ていくケータとフミちゃんの背を、クマとカンチは不思議そうに見送った。

「フミちゃん、待ってよ」かなり走ったところで、フミちゃんはようやく急ぎ足を緩める。「いいじゃん温水プール、楽しそうだし」ケータの呑気な言葉に、フミちゃんは目を見開いた。「なに言ってんのよ！　ケータくんを女子更衣室になんか行かせられるわけないでしょ！」フミちゃんの大きな声に、ケータはビクリと後ずさる。女の園にケータを一人で行かせられるわけがない。しかも自分の体を明け渡して。「それに、みんなと一緒に行ったら……ケータくん、見るでしょ……」「なにを？」フミちゃんの声のトーンが下がる。ケータはきょとんとして聞き返す。「……だから、サトちゃんやミカちゃんや他の女の子の裸……」いじけたように、フミちゃんは目を逸らして言う。頬が赤らんでいるようにも見える。その顔を、ケータはじっと覗き込んだ。「フミちゃん、もしかして……妬いてる？」「そんなわけないでしょ！」実に敏捷な反応でフミちゃんは言い返した。「そっかあ、フミちゃんオレが他の子の裸見るのがやなんだな」フミちゃんが振り回す拳を余裕でかわしながら、ケータはだらしなく頬を緩める。「だから違うって言ってるでしょ！」半泣きでフミちゃんが繰り出した拳を、ケータはぱっと掴んだ。「裸なら誰のでも覗きたいわけじゃないんだ、フミちゃんのだから見たいだけで」いきなり真剣な顔で言われて、フミちゃんは思わず動きを止める。「嘘ばっかり。可愛い子なら誰でもいいくせに」「そ、そんなことないって！」ケータはフミちゃんの手首を放した。「……じゃあ、余計ダメじゃない、私の体に何されるか分かんないし……」動揺した顔を見せまいと、フミちゃんはケータに背を向ける。ケータに掴まれた手首が熱い。動揺などしてないと自分に言い聞かせた。「そうだよなあ」屈託のない顔でケータが笑うと、フミちゃんはちらりと振り返る。「……ごめんね」「え？」「ケータくんの方がいろいろ我慢してくれてるのに……」フミちゃんの声がどんどん尻すぼみになる。それだけ言うと、フミちゃんは目を伏せて俯いてしまった。「フミちゃんが謝ることないよ。オレはどうなっても何とかなるけど、フミちゃんは女の子なんだからそうは行かないし」ケータの言葉に、フミちゃんは顔を上げる。「オレはむしろフミちゃんと一緒にいられるから嬉しい、って言ったら怒る？」ケータが悪戯っぽく笑うと、フミちゃんも少し笑い返す。ケータはいつも優しい。この非常事態が起きてから、ケータのこんな気遣いに何度か救われてきた。ありがとう、ケータくん。フミちゃんはもう一度心の中で呟いた。

　天野家へ戻ってくると、無人だった。「ケータくんのお父さんとお母さん、お買い物に行くからお昼頃帰るって」そう言いながらフミちゃんはてきぱきとホットココアを淹れてくれた。キッチンでフミちゃんが立ち働いているのを見ると、自分の見目形をしているとはいえ何かが胸に染みる。食卓に並べられたふたつのカップが、ほくほくと湯気を立てていた。「オレの分も作ってくれたんだ……」ケータは手を洗って、おとなしく着席した。手を合わせて、一緒にココアを飲む。「なんかこういうの、照れるけど……嬉しい」ケータはもじもじと頭を掻きながら続ける。「フミちゃんがオレの、お、おヨメさんになってくれたら、こんな感じなのか……」「ケータくん、私の顔で変なこと言わないでよ」「ご、ごめん」なんとなくいい雰囲気になりかけたけれど、それは一瞬で終わった。

　静まり返った空気も長文の敷き詰められた図書類も好きな方ではないので、あまりここへは来ない。今回ばかりはそうも言っておられず、ケータは苦行を強いられていた。学校に許可をもらってやって来た図書室。隣でフミちゃんは、ケータの3倍の速度で本を読み進めて行く。超常現象や怪異を扱った書籍類を片っ端から読みあさる。フミちゃんの真剣な横顔に、ケータはつい見とれた。といってもそれは自分の横顔である。「やっぱり、よく分からないね……」持ってきた本はすべてチェックしてしまって、フミちゃんは椅子の背にもたれながら言う。「ヒキコウモリに頼んで調べてもらったけど、お話の中ではよくあるネタみたいニャンね」「元に戻る決定的な手掛かりは見つけられませんでしたけど……」ケータにそっと寄り添うように、ジバニャンとウィスパーが言う。調べてくれてありがとう。ケータは声に出さず、目配せして二人に伝えた。手に持った本をぱたんと閉じて、ケータはフミちゃんをじっと見つめる。「あのさフミちゃん、相談したい人がいるんだけど」フミちゃんは顔を上げて、ケータの目を見つめ返した。

「んー……聞いたことないなあ……」ぼりぼりと頭を掻いて、チョーシ堂の店主が言う。ケータは「だよね」と肩を落とした。何故彼に相談しに来たのか、フミちゃんは訝ることもなかった。救いの手を差し伸べてくれるなら誰でもいい。「昔『転校生』なんて映画があったがなぁ、階段から転がり落ちて男と女が入れ替わる」「そう！　それ！　知ってるの！？」「知ってるも何も映画だぞ」ケータの食いつきに、店主は面倒くさそうに言う。「映画ではどうやって元に戻ったの？」「はっきり覚えとらんが、また階段から転げ落ちたんじゃなかったか」また？　あの石段から？ケータとフミちゃんは揃ってゴクリと喉を鳴らした。試す価値はあるかもしれないが、危険すぎる。ケータは両手を頭の後ろで組んだ。店主の目には、ケータが不安に眉をひそめて、フミちゃんが余裕に構えているように見える。「こんなこと無責任に言うのもなんだが」「え？」フミちゃんはぱっと顔を上げる。「お前たちはいいコンビだな」店主が言うと、ケータは「やっぱり？」と笑う。「気を落とすなよ」「……ありがとうございます……」段々坂の町を吹き抜ける風が、ケータとフミちゃんの頬をやわらかく撫でる。フミちゃんは小さな声で声で頭を下げた。

　おおもり神社の石段の最上段に並んで立つと、二人は息を飲んで足元を見下ろした。「フミちゃん、ほんとにやるの……？」「……うん」ケータが冷や汗まじりに問いかけると、フミちゃんは冷や汗まじりに答える。石段の中腹、踊り場状に広がる通路に落ちて入れ替わりが起こった。もう一度そこへ落ちれば元に戻るかもしれない。とはいえ簡単に実行できる高さではない。「やっぱりやめよ、フミちゃんがケガでもしたら……」「大丈夫、私につかまってて」ケータの言葉を遮るように、フミちゃんはケータの体を抱え込んだ。そのまま勢いをつけて一気に転がり落ちる。あまりに突然すぎて、ケータは頭を打たないように必死で縮こまった。二人の体は回転しながら目的地に投げ出される。数秒間固まったまま抱きしめ合っていた。「……やっぱりダメか……」フミちゃんの声とため息が、砂埃に虚しく溶けていく。「大丈夫？　ケガしてない？」ケータはゆっくりと体を起こして、フミちゃんに手を差し出す。フミちゃんもうっすらと目を開けて、ケータの手を取った。

「あの時って雷鳴ってたよね、雷が必要なんじゃないかな」さんかく公園のブランコで、ケータが真剣な声で言う。ヨロズマートで買ったサンドイッチを分け合った。決死の覚悟で挑んだというのに、失敗に終わった。フミちゃんは疲れ切った顔で、サンドイッチも手に持ったまま食べようとしない。次に雷雨の日が来たら、雷が落ちるタイミングを狙って再挑戦してみようとケータが熱弁する。それまでの辛抱だからと。「フミちゃん、絶対大丈夫だから」ケータはフミちゃんを励ますように、まっすぐに目を見て言う。妖怪という非日常なものに日常的にかかわり続けるうちに耐性がついてしまったのか。なんとかしてフミちゃんを元気��けたい。「疲れちゃったね、帰ろうか」さんかく公園から見るさくらニ��ータウンの街は、透き通ったオレンジ色に染まり始めている。帰り道でも、フミちゃんは押し黙ったまま。見るに見かねて、ケータはフミちゃんの手を取る。いつもなら振り払われてもおかしくないのに、今のフミちゃんにはその気力もない。ケータはフミちゃんの手を握る力を強めて、陽の傾きかけた道を歩いた。

　それぞれの家で夕食を済ませて、ケータは本来の我が家へこっそり忍び込む。いつも通り、フミちゃんは目を閉じたケータの体を洗う。 3度目ともなると手慣れたもので、フミちゃんは器用にシャワーで泡を洗い流す。「……フミちゃん、目開けていい？」不意にケータが言う。「……ダメに決まってるでしょ」フミちゃんが答えると、ケータは表情ひとつ変えない。水音だけが浴室内に響く。「さっきは何とかなるって言ったけど、我慢強いフリしてるけど、オレほんとは全然平気じゃないんだ」「……どうしたの、いきなり……」「平気でいられる訳ないよ、フミちゃんとずーっと二人っきりでいるのに」それはフミちゃんだって理解している。現に今だってケータに忍耐を強いている。「ごめん冗談、早く出よ」とても冗談で言っているようには聞こえない声。体を洗い流して、ふたりは浴室を出た。続く
