People were being hard on SMT4 for harkening back to SMT 1? That makes sense, but both are WAY different enough when similar notes are hit I just smile.

For instance, Jonathan’s and Walter’s names in Japanese are actually “ヨナタン/Yonatan” and “ワルタ/Waruta.” That “Yo” and “Waru” are important because they are puns based on the words “良い/Yoi” (good) and “悪い/Warui” (bad.)

Add on the fact that SMT 1’s Law and Chaos hero can be known as Yoshio (Good man) and Waruo (Bad man) alongside infernal Akira’s nicknames of “Goody two shoes” and “Bad boy” I wouldn’t want those two named anything else. It’s perfect!

Right you are! Jonathan's and Walter's JP names are very much throwbacks to the Law and Chaos Heroes as they were named in illustration documents! Actually I think this can also be applied to Flynn too, as the protagonist in SMT1 was given the name Futsuo.

Having played the games "backwards" (going from IV to I to II), I noticed a lot of parallels that IV harkens back to! Maybe it's something that I can write more about in-depth another time. I can see why people wouldn't be happy with all the throwbacks to the older games as it may come off as unoriginal or uninspired, but the way I see it, was that IV was meant to be re-imagined homage to its roots and especially with it being the 25th anniversary game. Plus, Kazuma Kaneko himself is credited as having made the game's scenario drafts, so my guess is that he wanted to (at least partially) revisit what he had already worked on.

I respect SMTI and II for what they did and I think there are a lot of strengths in their original narratives. I also think that it was good that IV revisited some of those same concepts and strengthen them while, at the same time, still took liberties in its story.

Hi! I speak very minimal Japanese so my observations might be wrong, but for Mika's (& Kohaku's) dialogue, they do change the spelling to make their dialect clear. Like they might end a word/sentence with へん (hen), やん (yan), or わ (wa) to show their dialect. For example, the kanji spelling for "yes"/いい is 良い (also pronounced "yoi" in archiac dialogue, Rei uses this pronunciation). For Mika or Kohaku they'll spell it as either ええ (ee/eeh) or 良え. Usually the dialect is made clear using Hiragana. For other things like Arashi's atashi (アタシ) it's spelled in Katakana, the writing system for foreign words, to denote a specific form of pronunciation as well, because atashi isnt actually a formal pronoun, it's watashi (私), but considered much more feminine in its pronunciation.

As someone that doesn't speak Japanese at all and so always has to rely on fan translations to read stories this was all completely new to me!

I didn't know that there was actually a difference in the dialogue and words to show Kohaku and Mika's dialect, even in written form! That's a really neat detail!

Arashi using a more feminine pronunciation to refer to herself... so true! I think it's really neat how the word you use for "I" can say so much about a character because there's so many different words for it in Japanese. You can't really get that kind of thing across in English or even German.

The text indicating to Japanese readers that Leo isn't using the word how it's actually meant to be used makes a lot of sense to me as well! He uses it more so as a catchphrase or a greeting so I imagine there would be some confusion for the readers, wondering why he keeps randomly saying "outer space"

And wow, Kanata's dialogue actually being hard to read and it taking longer to emphasize that he speaks very slowly. That's so smart and cool! I don't think I've ever seen something like that being done before.

Bad Hydra (ヒドイヒドラ) - UraShimaSakataSen (浦島坂田船) Color Coded Lyrics

First reason to love this song: this is basically another amazing song to add to the list of their Halloween bangers, however the MV for this song was released in JUNE. You know, in the summer. It also happened to be released on my dad's birthday, so that was a nice bonus.

Second reason: THE TITLE! To make it clear why I love this title; the romaji is Hidoi Hidora. This already sounds a lot alike, which I love, but they also add slightly different words that sound similar throughout the lyrics. For example, Hidoi hindoda (酷い頻度だ) and Hidoi hitoda (酷イ人ダ). I won't go into the meaning of them in this post, but I really appreciate small changes like this in the lyrcis of songs.
