안녕하세요. 반지하 관리자입니다.

이렇게 글을 통해 관리자의 생각을 전하게 되는 건 처음입니다. 그리고 마지막이 될 것 같습니다. 작별 인사 같기도 하네요.

2012년 6월부터 시작한 반지하는 5년이라는 짧고도 긴 시간을 끝으로 모든 활동을 마무리하게 되었습니다. 이 시간 동안 많은 분들을 만나고 미술의 여러 가지 모습을 가까운 거리에서 지켜볼 수 있었던 것은 관리자로서 큰 행운이라 생각하고 있습니다.

처음에는 아주 개인적인 이유와 절반의 장난과 호기심으로 반지하를 시작하게 되었지만, 관리자의 예상과 달리 많은 작가와 관객들이 오고 가는 곳이 되었다는 점이 반지하를 마무리하는 이 시점에도 그저 신기하기만 합니다.

 별생각 없이 미대를 졸업하고 나서 아주 막연하고 흐릿하게 미술가로 살아가는 삶을 목표로 세웠던 기억이 납니다. 그 당시 관리자가 생각했던 작가가 되기 위한 조건들, 포트폴리오를 만들고 공모에 지원하는 ‘일종의 규칙’을 실천하기 위해 생활 공간인 반지하를 곰팡이와 낡은 벽지가 보이지 않는 하얀 장소로 바꾸던 일이 생각납니다. 아마 그 당시의 관리자는 ‘미술가’라는 삶의 형태가 자신이 하고 싶은 일을 소소히 하며 살아가는 것 정도로 간단하게  생각하고 있었던 것 같습니다. (여전히 이점을 지향하고 있긴 합니다만..) 그런 삶을 위해 달성해야 하는 눈 앞의 목표가 전시 기회를 마련하는 것이었고, 그 준비의 과정에서 작업 포트폴리오를 위한 사진이 괜찮게 나올 수 있는 장소의 필요성 때문에 반지하가 탄생했습니다. 아마 이 과정은 많은 분이 알고 계시리라 생각합니다.

개인의 작업실에서 여러 작가들의 활동 공간으로 변화하게 된 것도 어찌 보면 장난스러운 우연 때문이었습니다. 비슷한 상황과 마주하고 있을 사람들에게 반지하를 공유하게 된 것이 또래 예술가를 돕기 위한 선행이라기보다는 재미있지 않을까 정도의 아주 가벼운 선택이었습니다.  

 이처럼 큰 고민이나 별다른 성찰 과정 없이 미술가로 살아��다는 모호한 목표만 세워놓고 관리자의 역할을 시작하게 되었습니다. 반지하를 통해 알게 된 많은 분의 도움과 조언으로 별다른 방향성이 없던 공간이 작업실과 미술 공간의 중간쯤인, 베타테스트같은 성격을 지향하는, 관리자도 작가도 관객도 익명으로 다뤄지는, 기획 없이 선착순으로 진행되는 조금 기묘한 방식의 공간으로 자리 잡게 되어 갔던 기억이 납니다. 관리자가 반지하의 정체성을 만들었다기보다는 반지하를 찾아오셨던 많은 사람들이 반지하라는 공간의 의미를 만들었다고 생각하고 있습니다. 마치 대화의 방식이 결정되는 것은 모두의 약속인 것처럼요.

 기획자도 디렉터도 아닌 관리자는 일종의 구경꾼 같았습니다. 공간 관리 차원의 최소한 일만 하면서 작가들의 활동이나 생각, 이야기를 듣게 되는 것이 관리자가 할 수 있는 최대영역이 아니었을까란 생각을 해봅니다. 5년간 열심히 구경하는 과정에서 많은 사람이 생각하는 ‘미술’이란 것을 정의하는 방식에 대해 많은 생각을 해볼 수 있는 시간이었던 것 같네요. 이 과정을 거치면서 지난 몇 년 전 막연하게 상상했던 미술에 대한 생각도 많이 유연해지기도 했습니다. 반지하의 공간을 이용하는 것은 작가들이었지만, 가장 큰 혜택을 받았던 건 관리자가 아니었을까 라고 생각해보기도 했습니다.

 관리자가 무척 즐겨보는 <헌터x헌터>라는 만화가 있습니다. 몇 번이나 다시 보는데도 항상 재미있네요. 최근에 이 만화를 다시 읽으면서 눈에 들어오는 인상적인 대사가 한가지 있었습니다. “소중한 건, 내가 원하는 것보다 먼저 왔다.” 프로헌터 ‘진’이 이야기하는 이 대사는 자신이 원하던 목표에 대한 가치보다 그것을 달성해가는  과정과 그 속에서 이어가는 관계들의 무게와 중요성에 대해 담백하게 설명하는 장면이기도 합니다.  

 지금 와서 돌이켜보면 5년 전에 목표했던 그 무엇이 희미해져 버렸다는 사실을 깨달았습니다. 미술가로서 왕성하게 활동하고 작업을 여러 사람과 공유하는 것은 언제나 즐거운 일이지만, 그것보다 중요한 것들은 관리자가 깨닫기도 전에 먼저 와있었던 것 같은 기분이 드네요. 정확히 말로 전하지 못할 것 같지만 그런 기분이 분명히 듭니다. 진의 대사는 어떤 면에서는  감동을 위한 상투적인 말 같기도 합니다. 하지만, 우리의 주변에 떠다니는 뻔한 말들은 중요한 이야기와 시간이 쌓여서 생기는 나이테 같다는 생각도 듭니다.

 삶이라는 단위에서 미술은 너무나 작고 연약한 영역입니다. 가끔 일상생활 속에서 미술은 굉장히 허탈해 보일 때가 많습니다. 하지만 우리의 삶에 대해서 차분하게 진술할 수 있는 방법은 미술이 유일해 보이기도 합니다. 그렇기에 미술에 대한 관심이 끊어지지 않고 잔잔히 이어지는 것 같습니다. 앞으로도 사소한 생각을 실천하면서 즐거운 ���간을 함께 보낼 수 있으면 좋겠습니다.

I think we don't appreciate this scene as much as we should.

Cheng Xiaoshi knew it was about Lu Guang BUT he calls him "My Friend" and not "Lu Guang" like he usually would. He's scared shitless because it's not just him in danger now, Lu Guang could be too yet he doesn't use his name, a name that comes as naturally to him as breathing.

Criminals can be very well-versed in placing hits on people, especially when said people will help them achieve their goals. So if things didn't go well and Cheng Xiaoshi had given his name away, Lu Guang would've been in more danger than Cheng Xiaoshi if the rescue had failed. Cheng Xiaoshi knew this and deliberately concealed his name while also making an effective threat. That just shows how smart he is and how well he can think for himself in distress. I really adore him so much!

This was the case even before he was injured, because when he was walking alone with her in all those shady streets, he whispered Lu Guang's name as he walked a few steps behind Vivian. This tactic was proven useful as Vivian DESCRIBED Lu Guang, instead of using his name when she made her threat.

Cheng Xiaoshi knows his kindness is easy to take advantage of. He must have a lot of experience with that (😭), but he chooses to be kind. And while being good to people who may hurt him afterwards, never has he put Lu Guang in danger. He takes all the precautions possible to keep Lu Guang as safe as he possibly can, and it's very rare for his good actions to backfire on anyone except Cheng Xiaoshi himself.

And that's impossibly smart and makes him even easier to love. He's kind, he wants to help, but he has his own hard limits. The minute you mess with Lu Guang, it's over for you. We don't appreciate how fucking smart and protective he is enough, which we should. I love him so much he's just so good🥺😭💖

It warms my heart that even in the original/previous timelines, Cheng Xiaoshi believed in Lu Guang claiming he had an ability.

Like there's never been any doubt in his mind. It's so unbelievable. Even Liu Xiao was told he was speaking bullshit when he claimed to have an ability (when the Xiang dude shouldn't have said that shit because of Liu Xiao's position in his family... rich people greed shit).

And yet Cheng Xiaoshi didn't have to be told twice to believe Lu Guang wholeheartedly. To the point he asks him to use his ability to help with something that means so much to him. The trust? 😭
