[Drama Reco] Coffee House

You’ve heard of Coffee Prince, but have you heard of Coffee House? Written by Song Jae-jung (Yumi’s Cells, Memories of the Alhambra, W: Two Worlds), the story revolves around the best-selling thriller author Lee Jin-soo (played by Kang Ji-hwan), who is forced to step out of his comfort zone with the employment of his secretary and the return of his best friend’s ex-fiancé, causing a sudden shift in his relationship with her.

This is a drama I pull out from the hard drive every five years or so. It’s one of the few I’m itching to rewatch every time I’m reminded of it. As much as I want to gatekeep it forever, I feel it should be recognized by those who need it.

Reasons to love this drama:

The Characters

If there is one thing to rave about this, it’s the characters and their chemistry.

Lee Jin-soo

Behind the overly polite and humorous young, famed author facade is an eccentric and a total jerk–he’s a writer, after all. Not a very good first impression, but believe me, he’s got it; he just needs a little shaking. Despite his eccentricity, he is an interesting and unexpected character. He’s probably a character you’d meet in one in 100 dramas, with an actor who nails him. And Kang Ji-hwan did. Sometimes I think when people call him to play this type of role, they just tell him to act himself, because, convince me otherwise, Hong Gil-dong and Lee Jin-soo are him. Trust me, you’re bound to love this writer who “swings between sanity and insanity” (as described by his secretary).

Seo Eun-young

If there was one person who could take all of Lee Jin-soo’s eccentricity, it’s his best frienemy slash publisher, the President of go Publishing, the charming and reliable, decade-long friend, Seo Eun-young. Being friends with his ex-wife, she has put up with all of him and is someone who truly knows the type of person he is. She’s probably the only one he trusts fully and with whom he shows his true colors. Unlike him, who relies on first impressions, she’s a darling of the crowd. In a way, she’s his maintenance pill who keeps him afloat, and is the only reason he writes. Park Shi-yeon did a great job on this one, unlike her past projects. She blew life into this one and made it her own the same way Ji-hwan did Jin-soo.

Kang Seung-yeon

Another character with whom the eccentric author shared his colors is his clumsy, accidental secretary. Young and naive, she’s obviously the target of the writer’s idiosyncrasies, which President Seo only pities. And although nosy and meddlesome, which I’m glad isn’t as annoying, she has brought great results and realizations in Jin-soo. I wasn’t expecting much from her actress, Ham Eun-jung, but I’d say they did a great job casting her.

Han Ji-won

And finally, President Seo’s sleazy, thick-faced ex-fiance and Jin-soo’s high school senior, who comes back a few years later after cheating on her with her friend. Wait, stay with me, he’s not totally bad, just insecure. I like that he’s not your typical arrogant nepo dumbo; he seems to be quite competent as a company director. He’s just a little slow and dense, which Jin-soo and Eun-young take advantage of to get rid of him. Haha. While Jung Woong-in does his other roles great, this is my all-time favorite.

In short, the cast played their characters perfectly, so no need to worry about that part. Not only that, even their chemistry was top-notch. Pair anyone up, and each pair has an interesting touch, adding to the charm of the show. My personal favorites are the friendship between Jin-soo and Eun-young and the quirky relationship of Seung-yeon and Ji-won.

The Plot

I enjoyed the storyline. It had a consistent balance between comedy and drama, and wasn’t slow-paced where you had to wait for four episodes before things got running. It gives enough time for the drama to unfold before switching to a light-hearted scene. I also like how the relationship between Jin-soo, Eun-young, and Ji-won was written. It feels close to home, like they’re some friends of some friends. And I’m glad Writer-nim and Director-nim didn’t treat viewers like toddlers. They knew we had questions and gave the answers subtly and without unnecessary suspense. For example, they didn’t have to make a big announcement on Jin-soo’s lack of a personal phone or car. They made it look like it was all part of his eccentricity until you reach a certain episode, which explains it all, but you don’t have a side character going, “And that’s the story of why blah blah blah.” They were straightforward but not in-your-face.

The only tiny disappointment is the time-skip. It felt like watching a separate drama. While it has some of my favorite scenes, it also felt like something was off. Maybe it’s because I enjoyed watching Writer Lee being a writer, rather than a flamboyant comeback man. I wish he had come back the same way he left, only as a man who finally let go of his past.

Nonetheless, they wrapped it up carefully, I enjoyed it to the end, and I highly recommend it.

This manhwa looks to be a new one, but it's been fun so far, although im not sure where the lo-fi part comes in ヽ(ˇヘˇ)ノ it just reminds me of the studying music everytime I read the title

This story seems to have more of a focus on coffee, I was never much of a coffee drinker but this story definitely made me start wanting to try different types of cups of coffeeヽ(*≧ω≦)ﾉ

It kind of reminds me of when I started getting interested in tea after reading The Duchess's 50 Tea Recipes, except this time with coffee lol, I hope the story will be as enjoyable as well

Sunset Valley Renovation Log

심즈3 플레이어에게 제일 좋아하는 마을을 물으면 항상 상위권에 있는 선셋 밸리. 나도 그 중 하나다.

세이브를 시작할 때 항상 선셋 밸리를 고르게 된다. 스포너의 위치, 마을 가족들의 직업이나 관계 등 모두 알 정도로 오래, 자주 플레이했다. 한산한 해변, 빨간 벽돌 느낌의 시청과 중앙 공원, 자주 들르지는 않지만 그 자리에 있는 것이 당연한 래빗홀과 건물들. 내 심과 친구는 아니지만 친근한 엔피씨들. 너무나 사랑한다.

그럼에도 불구하고 아쉬운 건 기본 게임이라 이후 출시된 확장팩 기능을 추가하기에 여러 제약이 따른다는 점이다. 빈 부지가 적고, IP-다이빙 부지를 설치하기에도 까다로우며, EA에서 만든 집들은 못생겼다. 비어있는 부지에 EA부지를 추가할 수도 있지만, 딱 들어맞는 부지를 찾기 어렵다. 때문에 항상 마음에 드는 리노베이션 부지와 월드를 찾게 된다. 넷에 올라온 수많은 부지를 고르고 골라 게임에 설치해도 또 다시 동선이나 기타 등등을 내 취향에 맞게 수정하는 지난한 과정이 남아있다.

내가 부지를 고르는 기준은 CC를 얼마나 덜 썼는지, 동선이 덜 꼬이고, 장식이 과하지 않아야 하고 블라블라. 결국 내가 다시 짓는 일이 많아서 대규모 공사가 되곤 한다. 세이브를 시작하기 전 몇 주에 걸쳐 마을을 수정하고 수정하고 수정한다.

좋아하는 월드는 Exchange의 SunsetIsland2다. IP까지 확장된 월드는 빈 부지가 많고 기존 선셋 밸리 마을 사람들이 그대로 있다. 이 월드에서도 꽤 오래 플레이했지.

최근 Anach의 선셋밸리확장판을 발견해 마을 리노베이션에 열중하고 있다. SunsetIsland와 달리 IP부지는 없지만 기존 엔피씨와 마을 포맷은 그대로이고 스토니 폭포 방향과 울프네 집 근처 지형을 수정해서 부지를 추가한 월드다.

지금까지 고다드-완, 프리오 형제, ElUlbanSprawl 등 주택을 수정하고 농장 집과 스타터홈을 짓고, 베이커리를 추가한 자바 헛, 아케이드, 아이스크림 가게로 바꾼 쇼타임 커피하우스(from Jenba) , 40x40 부지로 줄인 축제 광장과 대학 학생 회관을 짓고 LN의 댄스 클럽을 수정하고 개 공원과 원예용 공공 정원을 짓고 SN의 벨벳라��지를 본뜬 라운지도 만들었다. 스토니 폭포와 앞 부지도 수정했다.

앞으로 고쓰 저택을 고쳐볼 계획이다. 게임을 시작할 때마다 오버 와치에 재설정되는 군터와 모티머를 구해 줘야해.
