DAY 9: how long have you been working on your secondary wip?
i think i started really developing the idea for from the mouths with no tongue around 2019. it started out as a much more light-hearted story and it had a lot more tarot in it, which explains why i was originally going to title the chapters after the major arcana and the previous book title of “chance of serendipity”. it was always going to include the murders, i just chose to make it more serious when i incorporated an old idea i had for outrageous murders in a small town setting. i’ve tried to write it like (not even kidding) six or eight times, and have only just started to find a structure i actually enjoy.
what’s your oldest project?
Tumblr media
FANTASYBANE: originally your cliché “kids with control over the elements” story titled hideout that was revamped like twice or thrice because i scraped it all, except for the base concept of experimentation, and turned it into: “mad scientist tries to prove fantasy can be a reality by performing human experiments”. it was only last year that i finally found experiments i like for every kid so i could realistically start to write it now, instead of it living nebulous in my head for half a decade. i switched up the main character, broke off the original ship, switches some character ages and eliminated whole other characters, and chose the obvious antagonist that was there from the beginning... the scientist.
IN THE WILD LIFE GARDEN: it came from a role play about a dragon sanctuary which became a story of three orphans when me and my friends began to dive into their backstories in the rpg. i tried like three or four different versions, all set in the modern world, until i decided to move the story to the early 1900s. it kept its bases: the kids’ mothers die and they are left ina disarray over it. except now they are half-nymphs rangling with that conflicting humanity and they aren’t going on any angst roadtrip, instead they live in a manor in wales in the likes of digory kirk from the lion, the witch and the wardrobe movie. vienna is also now the sole narrator instead of sharing with garren and bella-rose, or me attempting a trilogy. the titles went from: tulip fields, to hospital for the flowers and this is about flowers.
ANATOMY OF SHADOWS: previously known as guardian animal, the ink threads and the light threads. there have been a fair share of changes but most of it has amounted to sharpening the worldbuilding since it is high fantasy. the plot has also suffered some changes, going from a rescue mission with a prophecy involved to still a rescue mission but now a lot more happens after that rescue mission. the relationship between misha and clara has also been changed a bit, instead of childhood best friends they are now penpals meeting for the first time. my co-author and i also watched the greatest showman while she came to visit me and we incorporated a circus aspect (but an ethical one because yikes). oh and i guess the biggest twist has been that misha and clara are now the main ship instead of them being forced into straight relationships because my friend and i were fools as preteens.

hello !! i’m holly, and i’ll be playing savannah white aka snow !! have some info about her.
tw: death, poisoning, implied child abuse, mild ptsd
[ pinterest ] [ playlist ]
BIOGRAPHY:
⚘ life begins for savannah white rather peacefully. she has vivid memories of baking with her mother and dancing on her father’s toes. she remembers standing the middle of the lounge room and singing when they had guests, and even when they didn’t. she remembers being read to and learning to play the piano and buying flowers and shouting ballads with both of her parents. as child, the world is big and exciting to her. she’s a little nervous, but her gentle spirit and kind heart makes it a little easier to navigate. she don’t need rose coloured glasses for the world to look so wonderful, so beautiful, so magical. it just is. she has everything a little girl could ever dream of.
⚘ life ends quite abruptly for savannah -- or, rather, her mother’s life does when she passes away. it takes her a while to process it. it takes her so long, in fact, that her father remarries in hopes of finding her a new woman to look up to. he has her best interests at heart, of course, hoping to find her a new mother, but savannah would have been happy with the maid or her nanny. savannah would have been content with watching julie andrews in the sound of music and calling her a mother, really. what she did not need was a stepmother so awful -- but unfortunately, an awful stepmother was exactly what she got.
⚘ it doesn’t take long for things to start shifting around the house. the woman is beautiful, but unkind. she is cold. savannah doesn’t understand how to get through to her -- she is encouraged to sing less, play music less, be quiet more. no matter what she does, there is something wrong. her father either does not notice or hopes that this woman is raising his daughter to be sophisticated and proper, but either way, savannah never gets to ask, because after about two years, the then-ten year old’s father dies in his sleep.
⚘ her mother is long-gone, her father poisoned, the maid blamed and arrested. savannah has never been so truly alone. she has nobody to confide in, to cry with, to hold her when she needs it. her stepmother, crueller than ever, seems to not care or not understand why she is so emotional. confining herself in her room is safe, but it is lonely. there is no music at all, now. no baking. only chores for the dear, sad little thing.
⚘ slowly, music returns to her. she listens to it to cope, she dances whilst she cleans, sings whilst she cooks. it makes her think so much of her parents that she can’t help but do it -- it is her last connection to them, after all. she makes sure to do it when her stepmother isn’t home, or at least to do it quietly. slowly but surely, music comes back into her life in bigger ways. her high school does musicals, which costs nothing but her time and effort, and if she makes sure her chores are done in a timely manner, she decides -- for herself -- to participate. it is good to be out of the house and away from her stepmother.
⚘ music is really where she flourishes. she isn’t a bad little actress, either, but it’s not as if she’s not used to pretending. pretending things are fine, that she’s okay, that her stepmother isn’t cruel and unkind. she still flinches, even to this day, if somebody yells or moves too sharply or too quickly. a therapist might call this, in combination with her recurring nightmares, post-traumatic stress disorder. she wouldn’t know, of course, because she’s happy to keep her head down and move away from everything that’s happened to her on her own.
⚘ savannah is thrilled to be at corona because she doesn’t have to be at home. in fact, the day after she was accepted, the girl left, not interested in staying in that house any longer than she needed to be. the bad press stresses her out, sure, but anything is better than her stepmother.
HEADCANONS:
POSITIVE: considerate, genuine, gentle, optimistic, empathetic, tactful, polite
NEGATIVE: childish, naive, jumpy, sensitive, submissive, awkward, fantasy-prone
studying music but has a real soft spot for musical theatre. during high school and college, savannah has played wendla ( spring awakening ), penny ( hairspray ), olive ( 25th annual putnam county spelling bee ), and rosemary ( how to succeed in business without really trying ). her first role and favourite to date was olive, but in playing Wendla, she had her first kiss
other dream roles incl. gertrude ( seussical ), liesl ( the sound of music ), brenda ( catch me if you can ), and audrey ( little shop of horrors )
she’s a huge romantic but aside from her stage kisses, she’s never been kissed irl. It’s really wild to her bc she keeps getting cast as romantic leads but cannot for the life of her talk to any cute boy in a vaguely romantic context
loves to bake !!! obviously. big fan of pies but follows up with cookies in second. any kind of sweet biscuit, really. stress baker. bakes treats as gifts, bakes for her study groups/rehearsals, anything. just loves it.
also obviously super loves animals. as a child, had bunnies and birds as pets.
hates coffee. it's too bitter and strong and tastes awful and so she'll make it for her friends if she wants it but she's a hot chocolate or tea kind of gal.
bad with horror movies, loves jane austen. favourite scents are apple, rose, sugar, vanilla, orange blossom, and clean sheets. always seen with a red lip, mascara and a touch of highlighter. has a large collection of lip balms, all vanilla or cherry scented.
would love to have a big sprawling garden one day, wherever she lives. would love a big family, would love a small family. just wants a family. like, a real one that isn't awful to her.
first celebrity crush was the scarecrow in the wizard of oz, also sky in mamma mia.
can sign !! also, allergic to fructose ( major symptom: chronic fatigue, but also nausea, abdominal pain, and inability to absorb iron ) and anaemic. can play piano, guitar, and a little bit of violin.
character insp. aka characters she relates to: sansa stark ( game of thrones ), hero ( much ado about nothing ), dorothy ( wizard of oz ), ti moune ( once on this island ), and rose tyler ( doctor who )
WANTED CONNECTIONS
musical friends / ex-cast mates: people who savannah’s done shows with !! could be high school or college shows, it doesn’t bother me !! ( OPEN 1 / 3: MABEL PINES, ARIEL TRITON )
neighbours: a couple of people who live on either side of her. maybe they can hear her singing in the mornings, maybe she keeps getting their mail. just really simple domestic stuff. ( OPEN 0 / 2 )
other musicians: savannah is a singer, but she can also play piano, acoustic guitar, and a little bit of violin !! i would love some musicians for her to jam with. could be classmates or otherwise. ( OPEN / ANY )
childhood friends: self-explanatory. likely other ‘royal’ characters but really i’m open to anything and everything !! can have met anywhere between like age 3 and age 16 -- savannah is currently 21. ( OPEN 0 / 3 )
refuge: somebody who’s house she used to go to when her stepmother was being awful. they wouldn’t have known 100% what was happening, they did have a good idea of how bad she was. ( OPEN 0 / 1 )
unlikely friends: relatively self-explanatory. this could be somebody who is a real troublemaker or is super reserved, i don’t mind !! ( CLOSED: ZUKO OZAI )
protective friend: this is just the unlikely friend wc turned up to 11. this is somebody who looks after her when she’s on that naive bullshit, and she looks after them when they need it. ( CLOSED: VANELLOPE VON SCHWEETZ )
princess pals: literally what it says on the can. i would lowkey love the other princesses being a squad. ( OPEN / ANY )

Interview with Mathew. D. Pottsman (Father) Interviewer: Officer G. Sorola Supervisor: Det. Insp. M. Hullum 17/12/2015 03:37am
Sorola: Hello, Mr. Pottsman, I’m Officer Sorola. I’m going to ask you some questions relating to your daughter’s disappearance. Please remember that you will need to tell us everything so that we can do our jobs.
Pottsman: Yeah, okay. I can do that.
Sorola: And you’re alright with being recorded?
Pottsman: Yes.
Sorola: Then lets get started. Mr. Pottsman, when was the last time you saw Megan?
Pottsman: Probably at dinner the night she went missin’. I made her favourite, and she wanted to watch TV. I went to do some reading and left her watching some cartoon show.
Sorola: Is that all?
Pottsman: I heard her.
Sorola: Pardon?
Pottsman: I heard her. There was a knock on the door and she answered it. I heard her tell me she was going out, and that’s the last of it. Told her to come back before the snow got too bad. When the street lamps came on. But she… she didn’t.
Sorola: Any ideas as to which of her friends it was?
Pottsman: … no.
Sorola: No?
Pottsman: That’s what I said. I don’t know which friend it was.
Sorola: So, please let me know if I’ve somehow misunderstood you. You let your 10 year old daughter leave the house with someone you assume to have been a friend, of who you don’t know, in the middle of a brewing snow storm? And, more importantly, you made no effort to check on your daughter and her friend for yourself.
Pottsman: No, no now you’re making it sound like I wanted her to leave. Like I don’t love my daughter!
Sorola: I haven’t said anything of the sort.
Pottsman: You don’t have too! You’re sat right in front of me acting all high and mighty. You know what? It’s my fault. There, I said it. It’s all my fault. I was a shitty dad and now my daughter is missing. If Megan doesn’t come back I’m going to be the one that’s killed her. Not whoever took her, not the weather. Not some wild animal. Me, cus I couldn’t bring myself to be a good dad.
Sorola: Mr. Pottsman, please. No one here is accusing you of anything. Right now this is a missing persons case and we’re doing everything we can to locate your daughter. That includes interviewing everyone that came into contact with her before the incident. The person who you claim to have knocked on the door is a prime suspect, and possibly the last person to have seen Megan. Is she likely to have left with an adult?
Pottsman: I don’t think so. She understood stranger danger.
Sorola: What about an adult she recognised?
Pottsman: Listen here, officer. Everyone in this town knows everyone. We’re friends with every family here cus we all go to that damn community garden thing. Megan gets along with all of them, even that new carpenter down the street. She baked him some cookies cus she was worried he wouldn’t have any friends, ha, she told him to go to the garden cus she though he’d get along with the large guy. What’s his name? Jack? He was over the freakin’ moon when he fixed up our neighbours house and she brought them out with a little card she’d made.
Sorola: New carpenter? Are you talking about Haywood?
Pottsman: Hmm? Yeah, him. Stand up bloke. You don’t think it was him, do you? Oh god, Megan told him to hang around with the other kids.
Sorola: No, we don’t believe he is involved. His alibi is airtight. He is accounted for outside his home at the time Megan disappeared. We currently have no suspects, which is why we’re talking to you.
Pottsman: So you do think I did it!
Sorola: Please, we’ve been over this.
Pottsman: I - I… okay. No, okay. I’m sorry. My nerves are just - it’s been a long few hours. I’ve smoked a pack. A whole pack, can you believe it? I haven’t smoked in years, and now I can’t sit still without something between my damn fingers.
Sorola: It’s perfectly normal to revert into old habits when you’re nervous.
Pottsman: Nervous? No, no the claw marks on my neighbour’s porch that’ve now turned up on mine make me nervous. The snow and that bleedin’ livestock massacre that’s going on either side of my home makes me nervous. But my daughter being missing? I’m fucking terrified. I’m so scared I can’t see straight. I just - I can’t. Everytime I close my eyes I can hear that damn knocking. I should have gotten the door. Jumped that fucking railing so Meg didn’t have to open it. It should’ve been me. Oh god, it should’ve been me.
“Hey Michael,” you call over your shoulder, fanning out the photos of the tiny body covered in blood and curled in the snow. “I think I’ve found another one.”
His head pops up over the stack of files he’s working through, eyes encased in growing bags. Sat cross legged in the evidence locker, he’d long since abandoned the confines of a desk. “What’s the date?”
“She was found on the 17th of December in 2015.”
He whistles, glancing down to the timeline at his feet and following the numbers with his finger. “Got it! Gimme a name.”
“Megan Pottsman,” you read off, peering at a shot of her on a medical table. Body bloated, skin crossed with blues and bruises.
“She’s an early one.”
“She’s the 3rd we’ve found in 2015,” you murmur, bringing the photo you hold closer. “Happened before Jeremy moved here, too. He arrived in 2016, I think? This victim was put down as a bear attack.”
Michael perks up, shuffling over to you and sifting through the file. He stops on one of the same set of photos you’re trying to make sense of, lost in the line carving across skin. “Doesn’t look like a bear.”
“Bears rarely attack people, too,” you add. “Get this: her dad said in an interview that she went out with someone that knocked on the door. He thought it was a friend, and look at the lacerations. They’re not quite like the ones on the victims we’ve got, by they’re a damn lot closer to the markings on entryways of Pottsman’s home and the neighbours.”
“You’re right!” Michael exclaims, “this is the third body with similar markings. And his testimony puts the knocking and the scratches in the same timeframe as the missing person.”
“Is there a photo of her from behind?” you ask, rifling through the contents, urged on by the burn smouldering at the base of your skull. Irritation thick around your throat. It takes a moment for you to find, but eventually the gloss of the image you’re searching for sticks to your fingers.
“Here,” says Michael, plucking the picture from your hand and lining it up with the other 2 photos of the 2015 victims, all presenting their necks.
Drawing closer it gets harder to breathe. With an uncomfortable constricting sensation that tightens your throat - of which you blatantly try to ignore -  you take in the wounds. It’s not hard to recognise them anymore. The tell tale signs are obvious after having witnessed them so many times. The slightly blacked curl of the incision located at the base of the skull. The raw irritation circling the neck. Sure, their skulls hadn’t been removed like the later victims, but they matched the earliest cases you had, clumsy as the wounds may be.
“This is fantastic. That ties our killer to the body!”
Michael doesn’t even question you with a funny look, equally excited. “Perfect in the worst possible way, but absolutely awesome. We’ve finally got an undeniable link between the Widow ghost story knocking bullshit and the killer. Meaning analysing the scratches on doorways and comparing them to the body lacerations will help with determining the murder weapon!”
You’re nodding, compiling the evidence into a seperate box and pointing to Michael with a determined finger. “You got Jackie’s number?”
He rockets into standing. “You bet your ass I do!”
“Then call her, damn it. With this information she’ll be able to confirm the correlation between the new victims and the scratches, prove that we should be looking into the possibility of a copycat killer for the Widow of the Woods. We’ll finally prove to Jeremy that he’s a fucking idiot for not listening! We can do this.”
“We can fucking do this!”
“I’m absolutely exhausted! I’m going home.”
“Me too!”
“Nope,” you reject, beaming at him and handing over the box, “you’re going to face the beast.”
“How dare you call Jackie a beast?”
“Jackie? Hell no. I’m talking about Jeremy. You can tell him he’s wrong, I value my life.”
-
The walk home is everything you could have asked for. Cold enough for the wind to nip at the skin lining your cheeks, to gnaw on your nose until it’s red raw; but warm enough in the burrow of your clothing. And isolated enough to gather your thoughts into something you can almost excuse for a pile.
Because as the snow starts to dance, the streets clear. Families giggling with eager children into shelter, doors closing with audible snaps and warm orange light flooding from the windows. Even the distant figure of Ryan, of who you raise a hand to wave to as he sits stagnant on his front porch watching the white caught on the wind, stands to head inside. You don’t blame him. Continuing past until the store disappears behind you.
It’s quiet, which is nice. A welcome change to the mayhem that’s been inhabiting your mind so frequently. Chaos causing havoc and a constant stream of uncontrollable chatter. Hands buried deep in your pockets, it’s with every turn of your charmed stones that you realise just why it’s been so loud inside you head. Why you haven’t tried to instate some silence.
Because, if you had, you’d remember her.
Which, honestly, isn’t ideal with an open serial homicide case running rampant through your priorities.
And again, now that you’ve mentioned honesty to yourself, you can’t avoid the reason why you’re so frustrated with Jeremy. Why you want to take him by the shoulders and shake, desperate to hear the rattle of common sense. Of a failure you’ve both shared, and the experience you seem to have taken away while he’s remained as stubborn as ever. If he keeps going the way he is, refusing to explore a potential lead because it seems implausible, or silly, or pointless, someone else is going to die.
The crunching of snow beneath your boots works wonders, sound enough to ease the panic bubbling just below the surface. Every few steps draws in a deep, freezing breathe. Calm with every recount of ‘left foot, right foot, repeat’. Doused in the glow of happy homes and flanked by snow banks, it all starts to make sense. There’s an uncomfortably misplaced relief at the prospect of connecting the things you knew to be related all along, the links between the scratches, knocking, and missing children now so solid that people can’t ignore it.
So solid that you can’t question your sanity anymore, because the evidence is clear as day. Paranormal or otherwise. The Widow of the Woods, or the story at least, had a role to play. Of that you were sure.
The lodge comes into view after a few more minutes of quiet walking, nothing but the wind accompanying its breech above the snow. Through the windows comes the compassionate glow of Lauren’s summertime; of warmth and comfort and family as she spins in Trevor’s arms, the pair laughing and dancing in the firelight. The hum of music trembling into the snow. Wrapped in the intoxication of togetherness, of the overwhelming love they have for one another - that same love that greets you at the door as you ease off your shoes and unravel from your layers.
But you don’t bother them, not yet, anyway. Instead watching them claim the living room as a dancefloor, Lauren’s sunshine caught in Trevor’s gaze that looks as though he can’t thank the stars enough for the beauty he holds in his hands. Can’t tell the woman with shining cheeks and a smile that brightens the room just how wonderful she is. How she glows whenever he so much as throws her a glance, or fractures into rays of gold when he smiles. Her happiness so warm and inviting that it throbs around her body, casting those she loves in her own light. And as he looks at her now, it’s like words won’t be enough.
That nothing will be, which is why he’ll never stop trying.

I have that problem all the time -- Tumblr will decide to just not show peoples’ posts on my dash. Which is why I rummage around in the Archives a lot. Sometimes Tumblr just can’t be trusted. >_>

Carmen Sinclair + Character Profile (insp)
❝she’s like a chaotic garden, untamed and unruly in her wildness but the plethora of flowers that are vivid against the greens are just a mere blip on the horizon of her personality, because all she really is can’t be defined by the beauty of the roses on her land, because she’s not the softness of the petals or the delicate tones of the pinks, she is the harsh reds, the thorns, all sharp edges and hidden secrets.❞

Note
my happy thing is that I spent the day with my brother yesterday
Yaay!  Family time is so important, I hope you had a good day!
Abby, let me just tell you right now I adore your poetry! It’s so beautiful!  I’ve got quite a few saved for insp but I can never find the scenes to gif that would do them justice.  You write so beautifully and I am so in awe of you
Here’s some random happy things:
small doodles in the corners of pages
using a fountain pen
finding new recipes to try out
baking with friends/family and sitting eating hot cookies
stargazing with a blanket wrapped around you
seeing a small wild animal when you’re in the garden/park
hearing children laughing
And here’s a quote I found:The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is to praise and celebrate
I’m giving out compliments and happy thoughts!

almost forgot @mackerelgray dm-ed me this!! so woop here we go ✨
misha venpua is one of the two protagonists of my one and only high fantasy story anatomy of shadows (co-written with @theladydurin). i named her before i knew anything about supernatural so lay off. she is a jocandra which is a species in the aos universe that is a cat-human hybrid a là catra from spop. her valokmaar is named fasma and she has fox-like anatomy with huge fennec fox ears. she is part of a circus and performs as an acrobat/trapeze artist. she is one of my prettiest characters straight up??? she and clara (her romantic interest) have one inch difference that gets more pronounced when clara wears high heels which is all the time. misha hates it. they totally do the upside down spiderman kiss at some point 💕
fae velásquez is one of the four main characters of coughing roses and my problematic fave 💕 she is a short redhead with more freckles than braincells who dresses like a punk grunge fan of the 90s. her story is set during the end of the world so she has a lot going on. has two dogs named orion and tallulah and also unexplained powers in regards to music (with severe side effects for those around her and her own mental state). dating her two best friends jo czerny and rafael ocampo though you could see it more as friends who kiss sometimes. physical manifestation of "chaotic bi". capable and willing to commit murder. acts grumpy but she's like a pomeranian, you can just pick her up, and really she wants to be held. answers the phone for two people and the first two guesses don't count.
and finally... ismene bane 🌒 love interest to garren olwen from in the wild life garden. she is an irish werewolf and the oldest sister of the banes pack, which has been conformed only by her and her siblings since their parents passed. has a reddish tone to her fur. wears skirts but always has the hem tucked into her belt so really what's the point. in a power struggle with her older brother lyall because they have clashing ideas on how to raise their three younger siblings. her name used to be spencer! but the remnants of my 2013 crimes need to die a fiery death. she is also replacing the character of rita murray, who was a sunshine-y redhead witch. but garren has more the vibe of dating a whole werewolf and his dad energy goes well with ismene's mum energy. there is a version where they date and then break-up but the revamp says this is endgame 💞

32 and 39 for the microfic challenge
You’ve said how much you like my project In The Wild Life Garden so… I wrote something for it! Still waiting for the moment of elightment regarding this but hey I got to write a new character: Opal, Bella-Rose and Vienna’s aunt.
The crawling flowers and vines that had grown from the crevices of the house had withered when Diantha and Adoette became ash. These plants they had grown didn’t become ash too, but they died on the following days and they were already gathering dust and cobwebs. No one touched them, we let them be, a homage or a reminder, I hadn’t realised how many of the flowers that we kept inside and in the garden were actually my mother’s until they all crinkled like parchment and washed out their colours. Opal ripped them off a week after Dad left and didn’t come back.
I watched her from the furthest corner of whatever room she was in.
Watched her climb on the furniture to reach the ceiling. Watched her pull the stems and vines that stubbornly held onto the wood from which they had sprouted with magic. It made the spiders from the cobwebs cower and sent dust flying and shine on the sunlight coming through the windows. I didn’t speak, didn’t offer to help her, didn’t offer to hold the table or chair or shelf steady. I couldn’t understand her anger. Everette had left things behind, so why not throw those off a window? Why take it out on Diantha’s flowers? While she was my mother Diantha was never my father’s wife. She was the flowers of the magnolia up the hill by the castle ruins. The flowers that died with her weren’t to blame for the decisions of my father, Opal’s brother.
Now, I have the hindsight to understand. Now, understand her behaviour later when new flowers poked among the ridges of our well-worn floorboards and wallboards.

the fact Vienna is a half-plant aro/ace nb who is really into dragons and has a crow/raven motif was completely unintentional on my part but honestly the stereotype is accurate, so

A tap on my knee got my attention.
Widow Dùghallach came back, shawl no longer wrapped over her shoulders and with a framed picture on her hand. The frame itself was elaborate, made with shiny wood. The picture was one of those old ones. Yellow and grey. It showed two women: both dressed in white dresses, with veils, and holding bouquets of flowers. It was hard to tell, but one seemed made primarily of lilies, the other of hydrangea, and from both hung ivy.
The cryptic jumped from the armchair as Widow Dùghallach took residence there. I didn't really see its legs but it moved and made itself comfortable on the opposite end of the sofa to the one I occupied. A yellow eye with a diamond pupil on its back blinked slowly at me.
That, signed Widow Dùghallach, Is my late wife.
I couldn't help a frown. I had always assumed the Xavier Dùghallach of the graveyard was her husband, everyone assumed that.
What was her name? I asked, photo on my lap.
She spelled it out for me: Virginia.
And who is Xavier Dùghallach?
My brother.
And no one in town knew this?
How did Virginia die?
I killed her.
I couldn't tell which of the two brides was Widow Dùghallach and which was Virginia. How old was this picture?
And your brother? What happened to him?
Widow Dùghallach smiled, all of her teeth were pointy as razors. I crossed my legs at the ankle, didn't shake, felt no fear. The cryptic blinked at me from the back of its head.
Did you kill him too? I asked.
No, Widow Dùghallach signed. The Banes killed him.

I no longer fit comfortably under my bed. I had grown, the boards hitting my head as I tried to scoot all the way to the wall tapped saying: You aren't a child anymore, why are you trying to hide? I breathed the dust bunnies, resting my chin on my folded arms. Even if I had still been a five-year-old, hair in pigtails and socks with tassels, I would have had a hard time fitting. So many things I had shoved underneath the bed. Two music boxes, one open and one closed. A prancing stag stood on a spring on the open music box, paint chipped, giving its small eyes a macabre sort of look. There were toys, plushes mostly. Pouches I remembered to be filled with wild flowers, they'd be dead now. Like the stag and the button-eyed rabbit staring at me.
On the further most corner were an assortment of dirty bones, songbirds and mice. All four the crows had taken me to, inside the graveyard. Even animals preferred to die inside sanctified ground. Dad hadn't liked me bringing them home, I could recall, that's why I hid them. Bella-Rose did like them. I took her to the nooks in the graveyard to look for her own bones. She brought back the skull of a rat. It was probably underneath her own bed, across the attic from mine.
I reached for the button-eyed rabbit, pulling on the blue thread of its eyes. One tug and it fell. The button was blue as well. I tugged on the other eye, it too fell.
Grabbing the closed music box, I brought it to me and opened it. This one had a carousel horse, a lonesome carrousel horse. The batteries gave for one last tune, crackling, more like agonising moans. The carrousel horse  — painted with saddle and bridle decorated in fake diamond sparks — moved up and down the pole, exhausted. I watched it until the batteries gave out.
Aunt Addy gave me this music box.
Well, it had been more Garren's grandparents than Aunt Addy, but it had been her name on the Christmas card. The stag music box was from Mum, well, Dad, but mostly Mum.
"Vienna?" Bella-Rose called, though I felt her boots on the floorboards than hear her voice.
Her face appeared where she lifted the patched quilt out of the way.
I handed her the music box. She took it without a question, then helped me out from underneath the bed.
