Unironically I think it’d be very easy to hijack the Knights of Dawn

If fablehaven was mermaids this is what I think their mermaid tales would look like: Kendra: Its color changes depending on the temperature of the water, colder is more sapphire blue, lukewarm emerald green, warm gold, and hot is ruby red (I say this because kendra’s favorite colors changes, as we see with the wizenstone, so her tail kinda reflects that). When she becomes fairykind, her scales are laced with some kind of ultraviolet bioluminescent color that only some fish can see Seth: he’d be like a ghost pipefish. They can camouflage very well into their environment and are very hard to spot in the wild. I think he’d blend in with the seagrass very often when he and kendra are playing hide and seek. When he becomes a shadow charmer, he is able to survive in colder water temperatures (ghost pipefish usually live in about 22.1-29 degrees C but don’t quote me on that) Lena: I think she would be a dolphin because they are very playful in nature, and I think that’s what naiads intend to be (though they think drowning people is their idea of fun) plus she goes to the surface a lot as a dolphin Stan: flatfish because he can’t stop making pancakes for breakfast 😭 Ruth: i think she would have a crimson-colored tail, and this is a dumb reason but it’s because I feel like the color red fits her character well. Like it matches her personality (or what I remember of it) Dale: Green like the color of kelp, as he tends to the farm all day Warren: a great white Shark. Probably has some scars because he’s literally a knight of the dawn. Idk what else to say Tanu: some color of koi because they remind me of splashes which reminds me of potions Vanessa: Multicolored betta fish, but her tail color could change depending on who she’s possessing Bracken: Pearlescent, icy blue, or some combination of the two Ronodin: Inky black with flecks of gold and/or maroon Calvin: some species of minnow. I can’t decide what because I don’t get a specific color vibe from him Eve: Midnight blue. She is literally the [Eve]ning Lemme know if I should add any other characters or if you have a different idea for what their mermaid tails would look like!

Bah Humbug!
Vanessa and Warren had been sent to rural Poland on a quick mission. But, when a freak snow storm buries their hotel (which, coincidentally, had only one bed available), they’re trapped over the Christmas holiday. With so much downtime, the two end up becoming a lot more than just mission partners.
“You're taking the floor.”
“It's freezing in here,” Warren said as he fell onto the other side of the bed. “Absolutely not.”
Vanessa sighed. “If only my mission partner was a gentleman.”
“I believe in equality, and a person’s inalienable right to blankets, pillows, and a mattress.”
***
Ever since running away from her very Italian, (and consequently very Catholic) home as a teenager, Vanessa Santoro had neglected to celebrate Christmas. It simply had not been on her mind. From Society missions to her double agent status with the Knights of the Dawn, she stayed booked and busy. And, even if she had time and remembered the holidays, who would she celebrate with? Just herself in her home alone?
That would make the holidays even more depressing than usual.
For all these reasons, she barely realized it was December 22nd until she looked up from her uncomfortable airport seat to spot Warren towing his luggage complete with felt antlers and the ugliest Christmas sweater she had ever seen.
“Oh my god.” Vanessa took off her sunglasses and looked him up and down. “Santa has lost one of his elves.”
Warren sat down in the seat across from her. “Now, why aren’t you dressed up?”
“I’m not quite sure that was a requirement in the mission file.”
“You’re a scrooge.” He flicked a hidden switch on his sleeve, and the lights on his sweater turned on. Acclaimed pop hit Santa Baby began to play, presumably from some speaker on the accursed sweater.
Vanessa shot to her feet immediately. “I cannot be seen with you.”
Warren accompanied her on her brisk walk. “Why not?”
She sent him a look that hopefully conveyed the irrationality of such a statement. “There should be a car waiting at Terminal C to take us to the hotel. Let's go so you can change out of this as soon as possible.”
Warren laughed and slung an arm over her shoulder. Heat burned where their skin met.
If Vanessa knew anything, it was that Warren Burgess was not a name she would be forgetting any time soon. This was their fifth mission together ever since she had joined the Knights as an undercover agent six months ago.
They were slowly becoming permanent mission partners as their missions ended up significantly more successful than any other combination of Knights.
Together, Vanessa and Warren were even faster, more efficient, and smarter than they were on their own. And that was saying something considering how highly rated the agents were as individuals.
Simply, they were a dream team.
As Vanessa plucked his blinking, musical arm off her shoulder, she tried to ignore the voice that said there was something more than just efficiency going on.

(Fablehaven spoilers)
“If he's everything dougan claims, maybe. His father was the most renowned dragon expert in the world. Even among caretakers and Knights of the Dawn, dragons remain the stuff of legends. I've never seen a live one. Almost none of us have. But chuck rose lived among them for months at a time, studying their habits. He even photographed one.”
“How did he die?”
Warren sighed. “A dragon ate him.”
(This part of the book was so funny to me. Also, please don't spoil anything beyond page 144 of book three!! I'm not finished with the book yet. Thank you.)

Review: Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
Brace yourself for a shocking secret.
Two hidden artifacts have been found. Three more remain unrecovered. More preserves face destruction as the Society of the Evening Star relentlessly pursues new talismans. Reading in Patton’s Journal of Secrets, Kendra learns the location of the key to a vault housing one of the artifacts. In order to retrieve it, the Knights of the Dawn must enter a death trap — a dragon sanctuary called Wyrmroost. The mission cannot proceed without stealing a sacred object zealously guarded by the centaurs. Has anyone seen Seth?
The race is on to acquire all five of the artifact keys to the great demon prison. Will the Knights of the Dawn conquer Wyrmroost? Who can stop the Sphinx? Can Vanessa be trusted to help? What artifact will be found next?
Plot:
It was Kendra’s first winter break as a high schooler, and although she loved school, she was also excited to spend the holidays with her family. Not that she and Seth were talking much. Despite growing close at Fablehaven, Seth is bitter that Kendra is keeping parts of Patton’s journal away from him, but what he does not understand is that she is trying to keep him safe. With the threat of the Society of the Evening Star growing closer, Kendra knows they are safe because they have Warren as well as other Knights watching out for them. Thus, Kendra thought nothing was wrong as she stopped at the daycare where she worked, until her boss, Rex, kidnapped her. Except it was not Rex, but a clone, ordered by the society to take Kendra and leave a Kendra clone to fool her family. Which would have worked, if Seth had not figured it out. Exposing the Kendra clone, whose body they buried in a graveyard for Kendra, Seth spends his mourning period in Fablehaven, desperately hoping the real Kendra is alive. Kendra meanwhile is a guest of Torina, who is keeping Kendra captive for the Sphinx who wants to use her to find the remaining hidden artifacts. Planning her escape, Kendra knows the location of a key that will help them get an artifact. The only problem is that the artifact leads them to Wyrmroost, a dragon sanctuary where no one escapes alive. Gathering the best team of knights they can, our heroes find themselves entering the dragon’s lair with the rare hope of coming out alive.
Thoughts:
Brandon Mull is really picking up with this series as this novel gave us death, danger, and dragons. Still taken from the point of view of following Kendra and Seth around, this time exploring a multitude of locations as our sibling pair spend the novel both separated and together. Seth is finally learning, understanding where he made mistakes in the past, he is still ready to take risks but in a more calculated way. Gaining clarity on some of the new power he possesses, Seth really becomes someone to root for, and dare I say it, a hero that can rival other Knights of Dawn like Warren and Gavin. Kendra on the other hand still got her stuff together and is a top-notch character who is also excelling in her bravery (now that she keeps it) and her kindness. Mull, despite the rocky start with our siblings, really begins forming their bond as a pair much more than they have in the previous novel. Almost painting Seth and Kendra as two sides of the same coin, one light and one dark, or one blessed and one cursed; Mull made them depend on each other and fight with each other, instead of them going off to separate battles. Mull also pulled at the heartstrings with this one with the death of Kendra. Well, the Kendra clone, not that her parents know that. With a casual mention here and there of how the world sees Kendra as dead, it makes Fablehaven seem more real somehow and brings in the true danger of the Society of the Evening Star as we near the final novel. With a fast pace and exciting adventures, this novel really flies through your hand as MUll add not only fantastic battle scenes, but character development, giving away some shocking secrets and making some final move plays that really make you want to read the next novel and figure out the concussion to this fantastical series.

Decided to go through with it and start posting my different AUs, but I'll only do a few per post to keep it short (tried to do all of them in one post but it ended up being so long that it was crazy) so maybe about 3 per post? sure, yeah, and I'll add a small excerpt for each if I've written one for that particular AU. If you don't want to see them just uhh I dunno block the rinse AUs tag or something sure there you go anyway here's to the first group
Sunset Order AU - An AU about Dale, Warren, and their parent’s backstory. This includes something I created called the Sunset Order which is a branch off of the Knights of Dawn for any kind of behind-the-scenes work that would need to be done, including getting hands dirty (which was made while the Sphinx was the head of the Knights). When Dale is forced into the magical world not exactly by choice, he has to quickly adapt and continue to care for Warren after the recent deaths of their parents alongside uncovering secrets from their past. In its entirety, this is self-indulgent and cobbled together by how little we know about their past/the past of Fablehaven. (No excerpt written)
Street Magic AU - Another short idea I had where magic is more widely known, and the preserves instead serve as schools (very, very prestigious schools). This is in a much more modern world, and magic is incredibly complicated to wield. So, it's often not used unless you pay for the education. Much of the population cannot use magic because of this. Kendra, having shown a proficiency in her understanding of magic, is able to get a full-ride scholarship to what would be Fablehaven's school. Meanwhile, Seth (who is not good at typical academics, studying, and the like) finds a typical, yet hidden, magician's shop and begins to learn magic there instead, under many people's noses (as he does). While Kendra begins to learn what secrets Fablehaven was built on, Seth learns magic in its entirety, not the typical watered-down version by society. (No excerpt written)
Viridity - This one is very near and dear to my heart, but it may not be that near and dear to some others because one of the main people it focuses on is Knox and it also has to acknowledge the end of Dragonwatch (whatever that was). This is a character study on Knox, Seth, and the relationship between them, as they're the same age but such different people in such different situations. This deals with reflections, comparisons, and interactions between them in almost one-shot form. This is partially an AU because I change bits and pieces of the end of Dragonwatch as I wish, but I also keep it as a plot in order to sow doubt after the fact. This fanfiction is about masks, late night conversations, sleep deprivation, and the inherent doubt that is included in growing up (Excerpt Incoming).
Silence worked its way around the room again, filling the gaps no longer in a comfortable way, but in a way where it sunk into their bones, sidled up next to them and breathed down their necks. A shiver rattled down Seth’s spine as an undercurrent began to flow of some emotion he couldn’t identify. Breaths were no longer easy to come by as they had been moments before. Now, suddenly, Seth stood in the kitchen with someone else when before, he had been happily existing alone. It felt… off. Wrong. As if Knox’s eyes could somehow pierce through his very being, analyze him… despite knowing Knox couldn’t—wouldn’t—do that. Kendra would, of course, but not Knox. Not… Knox didn’t have the brainpower to do that, probably. Even now, he spun and flicked the milk bottle cap on the table, looking frustrated every time it spun out and fell. Seth would usually laugh at him, say something about the stupid face he made every time he failed, but Seth couldn’t. Tonight, the tension hung heavy in the air like a smog, having followed Seth down ever since his dream—nightmare, not dream, his mind tugged at him—and it wouldn’t go. It wouldn’t leave. “I’m sorry.” The word slipped from his mouth like a whisper, a small wisp that gets caught up in the smog. He didn’t know why the words came from his mouth—whether it stood as a betrayal from his mind or sleep deprivation finally grasping him in its claws. Maybe… maybe Knox hadn’t heard him. Maybe this would blow over and mean nothing. Knox, meanwhile, stared at Seth, eyes wide and bottle cap forgotten, halfway teetering off the edge before it fell, plummeting to the ground with a sharp clatter. “…What?” Well, shit.
(If you have any questions, want to comment, send an ask, anything else, please do! I love these AUs with my whole heart, whether or not they're anywhere close to being done and I'm going to keep sharing them)

Note
ooh I've never actually heard of Fablehaven before what's it about?
so it's this teen/young adult fantasy series that I used to LOVE when I was younger, and rereading it now it actually really holds up! like, it's clear from some of the writing style that it's written for a younger audience, but it actually explores some really mature topics and the characters are all very well-developed. Definitely worth the read, and given the reading level is preadult the books go by quickly
Basically, "Fablehaven" refers to a wildlife preserve in Connecticut, where the wildlife conservation is all for magical or mystical creatures. We're talking everything from fairies to demons to trolls and everything in between. There are other preserves spread out across the world, and some of them contain vaults that house powerful magical artifacts. There are five of these vaults, all at hidden preserves and all guarded by a gauntlet of challenges.
The series follows 13-year-old Kendra and her 11-year-old brother Seth, with the first book showing their first introduction to the preserve. Subsequent books take place during the following summers as they get involved with higher-stakes adventures and become more woven into the magical world. There are two rival groups as well: the Society of the Evening Star, who are the primary protagonists and want to set powerful demons loose on the world; and the Knights of the Dawn, who intend to stop this and protect the world
Now, my personal favorite character is named Warren Burgess. He's a Knight of the Dawn and basically serves as the default trauma sponge (since the author needs to raise the stakes without putting the literal kid main characters through too much trauma). But he's funny, he's resourceful, he's resilient, and just a really awesome character.
There's a sequel series called Dragonwatch as well, but I haven't read that one yet. I've heard the last few books kinda undermine some of the characters' character arcs though bc the author hit some sort of religious kick, so idk what to think
TL;DR: teen book series about magical wildlife preserves, lots of mythology. lower reading level but worth it for the great plot and characterization. highly recommend

Part of the problem is that the universe they created doesn't really fit with the idea that Giles was wrong. Whether it was morally wrong or not.
For one thing, I have to say the idea of sparing Ben after killing members of the Knights of Byzantium to protect people feels a lot like a trope most modern fans don't have a lot of respect for, running through a ton of mooks with actions that either killed them or should have killed them and then sparing the big boss.
I don't know if Glory getting human feelings is supposed to be this sign it's safe to let her live. I think it might have just been to explain Ben getting worse. Buffy was immediately followed by Angel, and season 2's big plot was him going dark even with his soul and all the human emotions it brought and his big enemies were dangerous humans at Wolfram & Hart . Plus grief and anger are human emotions and Glory not getting to go home could easily trigger them. Plus don't forget Anya's newly human behavior in Dopplegangland.
The writers also would have known season 6 would be all about human evil, and although I'm sure it wouldn't have been in people heads yet, Jasmine at the end of Angel season 4 shows the danger of leaving a depowered bitter god around
Now, a further problem with the stance it's wrong. Buffy is likely one of the few Scoobies who would feel that.
Anya and Spike obviously would have no problem doing it. Giles did do it.
Xander brought it up, and it's unlikely the guy bringing it up is going to be totally against it. Also, the next year he was only against Willow killing Warren cause he thought
Willow would likely think she should be against it, but not feel it. And we do know what she'd do the next year
Dawn was captured of course, but she had the same opinion of Willow going after Warren as Xander. Also, I'm not sure that Buffy's morality is the standard for their family. Joyce brought a fire ax down on Spike's head when she thought he was just a person threatening Buffy and when Faith held her hostage she said she thought Buffy would KILL Faith.
Tara is the only one of the group who would be against it
Hell, let's expand it. Just recently left Riley was a soldier. He likely gets the idea of collateral damage
Oz? He's a question. Based on Wild at Heart's end he might accept it. Or he might not. Let's move him to the no category
And over on Angel.
We've seen him go dark. We've also seen him do things for Buffy's own good without her approval. You could probably sub him in for Giles and the only difference would be no bit for the glasses.
Wes? Similar upbringing and training to Giles. He'd do it.
Gunn? He'd be against it, but as we see what he does with Fred's old professor, he'd do it if necessary.
Fred? We know what she had to do to survive in Pylea, she wanted to kill her professor and the idea she needed to be protected from that was a nail in the coffin for her and Gunn's relationship
Cordelia might be a tough one. She grew to become a very caring person. On the other hand, she actually promised Angel she would kill him if necessary. I can see her trying to reason with Ben to kill himself for the good of the world, and then when he refuses doing it.
Faith would probably be traumatized by it, but I think she'd do it in a similar way to Giles and Angel, for Buffy
Lorne probably wouldn't do it, based on the way he felt at the end of Angel
So the anti-klling Ben group would basically be Buffy, Tara, Lorne and Oz.
It's hard to sympathize with Buffy's position in that case. It feels like endangering the world for Buffy to feel good about herself, at a point where all she's doing is feeling bad about herself anyway
It would have been very easy for the writers of The Gift to frame Giles's decision to kill Ben as something other than what it is.
Ben could have tried to attack Giles first, in order to escape, forcing Giles to defend himself (we know that Buffy herself has, by this point in the show, almost certainly taken several human lives in self-defence, whether that's one of the Order of Taraka assassins in What's My Line? or Gwendolyn Post in Revelations or some of the Knights of Byzantium earlier in the season). We, the audience, know that Ben has actually made the choice to side with Glory and betray Dawn -- the writers could have had Giles find this out somehow, rather than having him kill Ben while believing Ben to be entirely blameless for anything Glory did. If nothing else, they could have had Giles kill Ben in a less sordid and realistic way: choking him to death after establishing that he can barely move while Ben struggles feebly to stay alive.
But, notably, the writers didn't do this. At every stage they made the choice to frame Ben's death as unsympathetically as they could. They make it very clear that they don't think Ben's death is something to approve of at all. Just in The Gift itself:
Xander brings up the possibility of killing Ben to stop Glory ("I know he's an innocent, but not like Dawn innocent ... we could kill a regular guy") only to immediately rule it out with a look of disgust. Why say this if not to comment on what Giles will later do?
Willow explicitly notes that the ritual to use the Key is "a one time thing": if Glory doesn't manage to kill Dawn this time, she's got no reason to try again. Why say this if you want Giles's later decision to seem justified?
The scenes with Dawn and Glory suggest that the separation between Glory and Ben is weakening, meaning that Glory herself is becoming more human and more affected by human emotions like guilt and empathy. Why include these scenes if we're meant to see Glory as an active, long-term danger?
Tara prophetically accuses Giles of being "a killer", a word we've heard before on the show (see, for example, the way Faith reacted to being called a killer by Forrest in Who Are You?, or indeed Buffy's own fears that "the Slayer is just a killer" as expressed this episode). Why use this word, or include this moment at all, if we're meant to be cheering Giles on?
Giles himself gives Ben a speech in which he admits that Buffy would never kill Ben because it's not the heroic thing to do. Like ... this isn't exactly subtle.
We are not meant to approve of Giles murdering Ben; and we are meant to see it as murder. The writers go out of their way to tell us that it's morally wrong, that none of the other Scoobies would support it, and it doesn't even work to achieve Giles's stated goal of keeping Buffy safe: she dies anyway, mere minutes after the murder. By every measure, the show tells us, this is the wrong thing to do. Giles will never bring it up again, not even when he's trying to convince Buffy that she needs him to make hard decisions on her behalf.
So it's kind of infuriating that so much of the fandom insists on reading it as an act of heroism anyway.
It isn't. It isn't at all. If anybody other than one of the protagonists was making this decision -- if it was the Knights trying to kill Dawn to save the world, or the Initiative locking up Oz and treating him like an animal because a few nights a month he turned into a dangerous monster, or the parents of Sunnydale trying to burn teenage witches at the stake to keep their town safe -- there would be no ambiguity about this in the fandom at all. And yet, because it is one of the protagonists -- specifically, because it's the character the fandom has decided to read as Buffy's Dad who only does good things because he loves her -- somehow the normal rules don't apply.
It's not an act of heroism though. The show is right about that, and the fandom is wrong. It's one of the worst things Giles does; a complete betrayal of his promise to Buffy in Season 2 to always offer her his support and respect. It has far more in common with his willingness to drug her and lie to her face about doing so in Helpless or to abandon her in her moment of greatest need in Tabula Rasa than it does with any of Giles (many) moments of actual nobility and self-sacrifice. It's a sign that, fundamentally, Giles does not accept that Buffy has right to make decisions on her own.
Giles knows that, given the choice, Buffy would choose to spare Ben's life. He doesn't believe he could ever convince her to change her mind. And so he takes the choice away from her.
Why would anyone applaud that?

#its even funnier bc he will always show up to the next mission like#dw this is going to be great i am amazing at adventuring and traps and vaults#and then gets taken out immediately#fablehaven (via @mercutiotakethewheel)
warren: oh boy i can't wait to retrieve this artifact for the knights of the dawn!
also warren: [spends years in a catatonic state before a twelve-year-old defeats the revenant that cursed him]
warren: boy i can't wait to meet dragons at wyrmroost!!
also warren: [is gored before they even get to any of the real action and misses literally everything because he's stuck in the knapsack]
warren burgess is fablehaven's punching bag tbh like he can't win. book two when we meet him? cursed by a revenant. regains his faculties only to be stabbed by a minotaur, bitten by poisonous snakes, and hosed down in acid by a two-headed panther. book three? survivor's guilt and shadowification baby!! book four? this man gets gored by a flying deer and then trapped in an extradimensional storage room playing yahtzee for months. he cannot win and i love him for that.

Review: Grip of the Shadow Plague
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
transforms beings of light into creatures of darkness. Seth discovers the problem in its infancy, but as the infectious disease spreads, it becomes clear that the preserve cannot hold out for long.
In dire need of help, the Sorensons question where to turn. The Sphinx has always given sound advice–but is he a traitor? Inside the Quiet Box, Vanessa might have information that could lead to a cure–but can she be trust?
Meanwhile, Kendra and members of the Knights of the Dawn must journey to a distant preserve and retrieve another hidden artifact. Will the Society of the Evening Star recover it first? Will the plague eclipse all light at Fablehaven? Find out in Fablehaven: Grip of the Shadow Plague.
Plot:
Not learning his lesson, Seth is determined to complete the trade of gold for batteries, and along with Newel and Doren, they raid the nipsies. Oh Seth, when will you learn! Life at Fablehaven was good, until their parents showed up, wanting to take them home. When they tried to get their parents to see Fablehaven as it truly is, even after drinking the milk, the best they could do was say they were having a great summer and wanted to stay till the end. With the threat of the Sphinx, who may or may not be a traitor, Seth was in for a bigger surprise when Kendra was asked to join The Knights of the Dawn. Leaving Fablehaven with Warren, Kendra went off to join the brotherhood, leaving Seth behind. Unable to stay out of trouble, despite the lectures, all was not well at Fablehaven. It seems as if the prisoner the Sphinx saved left a plague on Fablehaven, turning the creatures of light into the dark. As it spreads fast through Fablehaven, the sanctuary is once again on the brink of collapse as those who they trusted turned evil, and the house itself becomes a death trap. Meanwhile, Kendra is part of a brotherhood, their youngest member ever, and is sent off on a mission to retrieve the second artifact. With Warren trying to find out who the Sphinx is to the Knighthood, Kendra focuses on survival as she hides that she is fairykind, and explores another sanctuary that, unbeknownst to the current caretakers, is also on the brink of collapse.
Thoughts:
Brandon Mull has done it again. Expanding more into the Fablehaven world, we get to meet new characters, and new threats, and get double the adventure this time. That’s right, because Mull split Seth and Kendra up, allowing us to see the mission Kendra goes on with the brotherhood, and what is happening to Fablehaven, both at the same time. Mull dives deep into history with this novel compared to others. Bringing up Kendra and Seth’s parents and how they do not believe, Patton Burgess a former Fablehaven caretaker and Lena’s husband, to our two rival groups of the Knights of the Dawn, and the Society of the Evening Star. For character, while Mull introduced us to some great ones like Gavin, they also failed again to develop the ones we got. That’s right, Kendra starts off as cowardly and then becomes brave, and Seth does something stupid and learns his lesson, and uses his bravery to try to fix a mistake. Where this pattern was less present in this novel, with Mull even giving Seth a breakdown by his grandfather on what it means when you disobey rules early on, I still wish we were past the point of even talking about this. Mull does add details into our siblings' powers, with Seth gaining some traction to catch up to Kendra being fairykind, I still feel we are scratching the surface with what Mull has in store for this series. The series plotline is becoming a bit more clear, as our gang has to stop the Sphinx and the Society of the Evening Star, but we still have a long way to go with only two books left. This novel’s plot line went quickly, mostly because we had two plots running parallel with Kendra’s mission and Seth at Fablehaven. However, I felt like Mull really has not used Kendra and Seth as a team, with previous novels having them fighting separate battles, this book only made it more apparent as they square off in two separate locations. Yet Mull does bring them together in the end, so there might be hope that our sibling pair can become the fighting duo Mull wants them to be. Of all the books in the series, so far, this is my favorite due to the amount of action and world-building it does, and the realistic threat that Fablehaven might not survive for the next novel.
