GOD
man I’m just gonna talk about buddy daddies for a minute because it’s been on my mind
the whole point the whole message of the show was loving after trauma, loss ect. finding happiness after hard times and that’s so beautiful?? Like tf
Kazuki lost his wife and unborn child on the same day and the only person he could think to blame was himself. after that he closed himself off, stopped communicating with most people and continued his life as an assassin because thats what he felt what he has committed to, he can’t go back now he’s too deep.
Rei had always been brought up to be an assassin, never feeling any love for care from anyone around him he was raised to be a stone cold killing machine. He didn’t think he deserved to be loved, he didn’t think HE could be loved
and then, after rei leaves his father to live on his own for a few years he meets Kazuki. Kazuki who moves in with him, cleaning him up and helps him heal, the best he can. And for a time, it’s enough. They both know it’s temporary but it’s not the lowest they’ve been but not the best.
and then, after an unforeseen hitch is thrown into one of their jobs, Miri is brought in their lives. so pure and innocent Kazuki can’t bring himself to leave her alone without leaving her with her mother.
Rei eventually realizes that he wants to be for Miri what his dad wasn’t for him. He wants to do better, he wants to BE more for her.
Kazuki realizes that Miris mother can’t care for her as Rei and Him can, and even though her upbringing may not be the greatest they are willing to try, for her. So they take her in, ready to be the best they can be despite themselves.
and then kazuki moved on from his wife’s death, he understands what she would’ve wanted for him. To be happy, even if that means without her.
kazuki realizes what makes him happy, loving Miri and Rei
Rei revisits HIS past, despite not wanting to interact with his father he does. which ends in a assassination of his old mentor because he betrayed the organization for his wife. this leads to many conflicting feelings for rei but he moves forward, with kazukis help of course
THEY move forward as a family, Kazuki and Rei are learning how to be good parents for Miri.
then, miris mother returns asking for miri back in her final years (??) of life. She knows about Kazuki and reis employment and despite loving and caring for Miri, they let her go. it’s for her own good.
then, miris mom dies and rei leaves the organization severely injuring his arm in order to insure he is of no use to his father. he is willing to abandon his life for his family, his REAL family who he loves and who loves him
and then, they heal as a family. rei and Kazuki open a diner together and miri is given as normal of a life and she can
loss, grief, trauma, love, healing

Imagining a few years down the line kazuki and rei are trying to explain what happened to miris father and how guilty and deeply apologetic they are for killing hi-
“Wait so… he was a human trafficker whose first action upon seeing me was putting a gun to my head?”
“Uhh”
“Papas. You feel guilty for that?”
“Uhh”
“Papas…”

no yeah miri's mom was NOT the ""villain"" and she definitely was not presented as such either.
with the smile spell miri mentioned earlier, and just overall despite the situation she was forced into, misaki clearly did her best with miri even with her conflicting emotions.
the only obviously "bad" choice shes made so far was sending miri, a 4 y/o all alone into the city but 💀 to some degree the thought of sending her to be with her dad is also. yeah. like shes not in a place where she can take care of miri properly, and even if miri seemed to be some sort of... bargaining chip?? miris dad has the resources to help miri more than her mom could
and kazuki isnt the ""good guy"" either nor was the situation presented as so black and white. both parties said things that they've internalized due to their own separate situations, and while kazuki was mostly projecting due to his own losses and experiences, itd be good if he manages to learn about some other worldviews.
but yeah tldr: neither misaki nor kazuki were villains, and they werent PRESENTED as such either. they just said whatever and you the viewer have to interpret it.
i am aware a lot of series often demonize women who dont want their children or are in similar situations etc. but thats not what happened here luckily

Wild Prediction 2
After escaping from the Organization or killing Rei’s dad and having Ogino take over or something. Since Kazuki looks like Miri’s father, he claims himself to be Miri’s father. That way, he, Rei, Miri, and Kyutaro can all escape overseas (maybe to the USA) where Kazuki and Rei get married and Rei adopts Miri too. Season 2 is about them adapting to living in the USA.
...I am only half joking. There is supposed to be a surprise in the last episode and Kazuki’s VA also mentioned the whole, “Fact being stranger than fiction,” thing. So I am going to go with an ending that would actually surprise me if they went through with it.
