Summary: You move to New York to focus on your art but end up working as an intern at Stark Enterprises

Chapter Summary: it’s the night of the fundraiser ball, a night that will change your life forever

Pairing: Tony Stark x Reader, Peter Parker x Reader (friendship)

A/N: for the purposes of this story Stark Enterprise is set out like an office building in New York and the story does not follow the same timeline as the movies. Reader does not know Peter is SpiderMan. Also, spelling and grammar is not my strongest skill so please be kind :)

When you arrive at the location of the fundraiser ball, Tony gets out of the car first and walks around to open the door for you. He holds his hand out for you to take and you get out of the car, thanking him. You take a moment to brush down your dress and he presents his arm for you to hold onto. You walk together up the steps towards the grand building and the man at the door ticks your names off the guest list before opening the door to let you in. Tony gives him a small knowing nod as you walk past.

Once inside the building you feel a sudden wave of anxiety hit you. What if this event goes horribly wrong, it would surely be your fault as the one who helped organise it. What if no one bids on the items at auction and no money is raised? Tony gives you arm a small squeeze.

“you ready?”

Then another thought pops in your mind. What will people think when they see you and Tony walk in together, arm in arm? Will they judge you? Will they think you only got this job because you’ve been flirting with him? You push all those thoughts out of your mind. You’ve worked so hard to make tonight happen, you are not going to let anything ruin it. Especially not your own mind. You take a deep breath, turn to Tony and smile.

“lets do this”

You make your way down the grand staircase into the ballroom where already a lot of the guests are waiting. A few turn to look at Tony, and then at the girl on his arm.  You spot Peter stood over by the wall, all dressed up in his suit, talking to MJ who looks almost unrecognisable out of her barista outfit. Peter gives you an excited wave and you smile back at him.

When you reach the bottom of the stairs you're instantly crowded by press flashing their cameras at you both and asking for statements from Tony, mostly about this evenings event but you hear a few questions asking who you are. Tony holds his hand up and they all stop to listen.

“You were invited here tonight to report of the fantastic charities were fundraising for, not to look for gossip. I will be answering questions later on this evening but for now, I have to buy my wonderful PA a drink. Excuse us.” He says and they all watch as Tony walks you past them all in the direction of the bar. You're stunned at how much control he has over them and relieved that he got you out of that overwhelming situation. You wonder how celebrities must cope having paparazzi and press following them around.

The bartender comes straight over when you reach the bar and Tony orders you both some drinks. As you wait you look around the room at everyone looking lovely in their fancy tuxedos and ball gowns and you smile. Suddenly you're aware that Tony is watching you. You turn to look at him, leaning against the bar looking like someone out of a James Bond movie in his tuxedo.

“what?” You say when he just continues looking at you.

“you really do look beautiful” he replies and you blush.

“well I must say you do look rather dapper yourself sir” you say putting on a posh voice. Tony laughs.

“sir? You haven’t called me that in a while” he takes the drinks from the bartender and hands you yours.

“can you believe I used to be scared of you” you laugh and take a sip of your drink.

“and how do you feel about me now?” He smirks and takes a drink, looking at you over the top of his glass. Is he flirting with you?

Before either of you can say anything else Peter appears next to you with MJ.

“hey y/n. Mr Stark, sir. This is MJ.” He says confidently and you find yourself feeling proud of him.

“I hear you’re the one I have to thank for the exceptionally good coffee?” Tony says.

“thats me” MJ replies taking a bow.

“look after this one kid, she’s a keeper” he says to Peter who smiles awkwardly and you take another sip of your drink to cover your laugh.

“as much as I am enjoying embarrassing you Peter, I’m afraid my duty calls. People to greet, awful jokes to fake laugh at…” Tony says and you roll your eyes playfully “nice to finally meet you MJ, this kid don't shut up about you” he pats Peter on the shoulder and leaves. Peter looks like he wants the ground to open up and swallow him whole.

“lets get you guys some drinks eh?” You say as you get the bartenders attention. “soft drinks only” you clarify, remembering they’re both still underage.

You give them their drinks and the three of you head over to a seating area in the corner to chat.

After about an hour of talking and laughing with Peter and MJ, Tony appears behind you and puts his hands on your shoulder. He leans forward so he can talk to you.

“I have someone who wants to meet you” he says and as you turn to look at him Steve Rogers sits down on the sofa next to you.

“good evening y/n”

“hi” is all you manage to say back, feeling slightly starstruck. Right in front of you is the face you’ve sketched so many times. His jawline really is perfect.

“Tony tells me you're quite the artist, I cant wait to see what you’ve painted for the auction tonight”

“yeah y/n’s paintings are wonderful, but you should really see some of the stuff in her sketchbook. Now that is interesting.” Tony teases

“oh no no, no one wants to see the stuff in there. Just full of doodles really” you respond shooting Tony a look, he winks at you.

“hey cap?” You hear someone call and Steve looks over then back to you.

“ah I gotta go. But it was lovely to meet you y/n. I’ll see you around.” He stands up and looks at Peter “good to see you again kid” he says, and you sense theres some history between the two of them.

Peter smiles awkwardly, sinking into his chair slightly. Steve walks off in the direction of whoever was calling him and Tony takes his space on the sofa. He nudges you.

“i’m sorry but that was brilliant. You're face was priceless” he laughs

“you couldn’t have warned me he was going to be here? When did you even add him to the guest list?” You respond

“I wanted it to be a surprise”

You punch him playfully in the arm, and turn your attention to Peter.

“you didn’t tell me you knew Captain America?” You say and he looks startled.

“oh, I don't really. uh, we just… kinda met once” he stutters and you look confused. Why is he being so secretive?

“ladies and gentlemen, the auction is about to begin. Please take your seats” The announcer calls from the stage. Tony stands up and holds his hand out for you to take.

“m’lady” he says trying to sound like a posh British butler.

You hold his hand and stand up. You walk over in the direction of the stage and find your seats. Peter and MJ sit next to you. Once everyone is sat ready the announcer starts speaking.

“ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming tonight. Before the auction starts I would like to invite to the stage the man who made tonight possible, Mr Tony Stark!”

The crowd start applauding as Tony stands up. He turns and give a wave to everyone before heading up to the stage and taking the mic.

“thank you, thank you everyone” the applause dies down “tonight is a very important night. We’re raising money for some really important charities and we’ve got some great items on offer for you guys tonight so make sure you get out your wallets and dig deep. Before we start I do have some thank yous I need to give out. Firstly thank you to the owners of this amazing building for letting us use it tonight. Thank you Richard for hosting the auction.” he gestures to the announcer stood at the side of the stage who takes a bow “Thank you to my incredible PA y/n for working so hard to arrange all of this. Everyone thinks its me that arranged tonight but she’s the one who’s done all the work really. Without her this wouldn’t have been possible, so thank you y/n” he points you out in the audience and Peter gives a loud ‘woop’ next to you. You can feel yourself blushing. “and lastly thank you to all of you for coming. Now let’s spend lots of money!” The audience laugh and applaud as Tony makes his way off stage back over to sit by you. He squeezes your knee gently and whispers “sorry if that embarrassed you”

“its fine” you shake your head and smile at him.

“and now we come to lot number 24 in the auction. A painting made and donated to us by a miss Y/N Y/L/N”

You feel your heart flutter with a mix of excitement and nerves as your painting is bought on stage and the announcer walks over to remove the sheet covering it. You take a deep breath and hold it as the painting is revealed, wondering what people will think of it. You sneakily look at Tony’s face to see his reaction at seeing it for the first time, but he just stares forward at the stage expressionless. Does he not like it?

The bidding starts and a few people raise their boards to bid. The price is slowly creeping up, but not by much. Suddenly Tony raises his board.

“five thousand dollars” he shouts confidently and your mouth drops open in shock.  You hear a few gasps from members of the audience, and even the announcer himself looks amazed.

“wow! Generous bid there of five thousand, do I head any advances on five?”

Everything after that was a bit of a blur and before you knew it the price was up to seven thousand. It seemed people actually wanted your painting. Tony stands out of his chair, raises his board and bids ten thousand dollars.

“oh my God, y/n!” you hear Peter say in amazement next to you and he excitedly nudges you.

“ten thousand going once, going twice” the announcer bangs his hammer “sold for ten thousand dollars to Mr Tony Stark”

The crowd applaud and you bring your hands up to your face in shock, laughing. You cant believe that something you painted just sold for ten thousand dollars. Even though you wouldn’t see any of that money you didn’t care.

Tony sits down again and turns to you.

“I told you I wanted something to brighten up my office.”

“you could have just asked me, id have painted you something for free” you say, still laughing.

“oh. Is it too late to take back my bid?” he jokes, putting his arm around your shoulder to hug you.

After the event is finished Happy drives you back to your apartment. Tony opens the car door for you and walks you inside to your front door. You unlock the door, step inside and turn around to look at Tony.

“I think we can call tonight a success” Tony says and you nod

“yeah, we did do good didn’t we”

“you did. I meant what I said up on that stage, tonight would not have happened if you hadn’t been so dedicated to making it work. Im really proud of you y/n”

You blush and look down at the floor.

“hey” Tony says putting a hand under your chin to gently lift your head up to look at him “you should be proud of yourself too”

You nod slightly, looking into his eyes. He moves towards you slowly, eyes flicking down to your lips. You have plenty of time to back away, but you don’t. And neither does he. You close your eyes and your lips meet. He moves his hand to the side of your face and you bring yours up to behind his neck, pulling him in more. The kiss naturally comes to an end and you both pull away slowly, looking at each other smiling.

“now get some sleep. We’ve got a long day of clean up tomorrow”

“cant wait” you joke sarcastically

“good night y/n” Tony starts to walk away.

“good night Tony”

You shut the door and stand there for a moment, taking in everything that happened tonight. It went so much better than you could have imagined and you did feel proud. You go to bed smiling.

In the early hours of the morning you're woken up by a crash coming from the living room, like something had been knocked over. You lie in bed for a moment, presuming it was nothing but then you think you hear something else and you sit bolt upright listening carefully. You get out of bed and slowly creep towards your bedroom door, opening it as quietly as possible. Peering through you cant see anything out there so you continue to tip toe out the door. You walk into your living room and notice your window is open. You must have forgotten to shut it and the breeze knocked something over. You walk over to pull it closed and suddenly feel an arm come around you from behind, restraining you. You try to scream but another hand covers your mouth.

”got her” you hear the male voice say.

You kick as much as you can as the man with a mask covering his face throws you down on the sofa, holding you down.

“get the shot” he says and another man in a mask appears next to him holding a needle with some sort of liquid in it. You continue to try kick and scream but its no good. The other man pushes your head back and you feel a sharp pain as the needle jabs into your neck. He starts injecting the liquid into you but is stopped half way as he’s suddenly thrown across the room. The other man holding you down gets up to try fight but is soon sent flying too. You sit up and see Spiderman coming to help you up.

“run y/n, find somewhere to hide! quick!” He shouts as one of the men starts getting back up. You do as he says and run back to your room, grabbing your watch off the bedside table and climbing into your small closet to hide. You pull the door shut behind you and sit on the floor, swiping at the watch face to bring up the alarm button just like Tony had shown you. Your hands are shaking as you press the button and hold the watch close to your chest. After a few moments you hear the sound of fighting stop, then you hear footsteps running into your room. You bring your hand up to cover your mouth, trying to quiet your breathing not knowing who is in your room. The closet door flies open and Iron Man stands looking at you. He immediately crouches down, removes his helmet and Tony pulls you into him tightly.

“its okay y/n, I’m here. I’m here. You're safe.” He can feel how much you're shaking as you sob, struggling to catch your breath. He releases you from the hug and puts his hands on your shoulders. “breathe y/n, I need you to breath. okay? Can you fo that for me?”

You look at him, tears streaming down your face trying to focus on him. He tells you to breath with him and you do, not taking your eyes off him until finally you're breathing stabilises. “Did they hurt you?” He asks full of concern but before you can answer someone else runs into your room calling your name. You look over to see Spiderman stood in your bedroom doorway without his mask on. You squint through your teary eyes and recognise the face.

“Peter?! Why are you dressed like… you're the Spiderman?!” You say, finally realising the truth.

“I can explain” he blurts but stops talking when you start screaming and writhing in agony. You feel like your blood is on fire. You don't know what’s happening to you but you hate it. Tony tries to get you to tell him what’s wrong but you cant speak.

Then everything goes black.

I NEVER FINISHED MY STORY OMG. ok so i left off at being too proud to tell my friend she was right and kpop fucked hard. the difference between u and me is that i’m too good of a liar. too good. i kept up the “i hate kpop it’s cringe” facade for ALMOST TWO WHOLE YEARS, I SHIT YOU NOT. why? bc my dumb ass, extra ass, dramatic ass self thought “ok if i’m gonna have to deal with the embarrassment of admitting i’m wrong, i better do it in such an extra ass way it’ll knock ur socks off so hard that YOULL be the one embarrassed not me.” the original plan was to learn the entire choreography to bts dope, bc it’s the song that she told me to listen to and inevitably the song that got me into them, but later switched to bts fire bc i saw too many of those “choreo matches w any song” videos, and then her birthday party came up. and here’s the real kicker. her birthday is April Motherfuckin Fools. so it would be So Perfect for me to reveal my kpopism as a birthday present And a april fools prank in one. so i was Set on the Reveal being on april 1st, but the day rolls around and god that choreo is so fucking hard and i am Not a dancer. never have been. so i abandon that and go ykno what… i’ll do it Next Year. BC MY BITCHASS WAS LIKE NO THE MOMENT IS TOO PERFECT TO DO IT ON A NORMAL ASS DAY ITS GONNA BE ON APRIL FOOLS ON HER GODDAMN BIRTHDAY OR NOT AT ALL. a year rolls by, i’ve told most of our friends except her and they’re all in on it, i’d made so many subtle kpop references to her without her realising they were fully intentional and had too many scares where she almost figured me out but i lied my way out of it, and i’d given up on showing off with choreography bc i couldn’t make that shit look good. i’m not a dancer. i am, however, a rapper, and a damn good one, so i inhaled the agust d mixtape and decided i’d just rap the eminem of kpop’s anthem at her face. in korean. and change the lyrics at the end (if u haven’t listened to agust d, the bridge repeats “i’m sorry” a lot) to “i’m sorry i kept this from u for so long” and “i’m sorry i actually ult got7 not bts” (this was like the april after skz debuted ok i was holding onto got7 for dear life knowing full well skz we’re going to convert me smh) and the best part? she never saw it coming. her official present was a cd with a bunch of kpop on it but she thought it was just a personalised mixtape for her so i told her to play the first song out loud and she knew the song Instantly. it has a long intro so she was like “i guess u did listen when i recommended u this song!! i knew you’d like it since u like rap so much!!” and then i started rapping and i shit u not. she started SCREAMING. like the initial reaction was her jaw dropping and then instinctively covering her mouth but when i kept going and she realised i wasn’t fucking around she just fucking screamed like a banshee. at the end during the sorry bit i threw off my jacket to reveal a got7 shirt on the inside and she fell off her chair and started rolling around on the floor. needless to say it was every bit as satisfying as i thought it’d be LMAOOOO afterwards her ass was like “I CANT BELIEVE U HID THIS FROM ME FOR OVER A YEAR” and when i tried to explain my ego couldn’t take the “i told u so” she was like “you know i wouldn’t have made fun of you for it right? i would just be glad you’re not hating on my boys anymore” so basically i’m a big dramatic fool and she was always too good for me.

I think part of the reason I can't deal w Twitter is the exact reason I refuse to leave tumblr, in that I've been on tumblr since 2006 and twt since 2008, and tumblr literally has not changed at all, not even a little, whereas going from the early days of twt where there were no corporate sponsorships or ads and you had to manually copy and paste someone's tweet and @ them to retweet it, to how it is now, like 90% ads and showing me shit from the timelines of people I don't even fuckin follow n whatnot, it's just not enjoyable. Idk how anyone finds anything on twt, it confuses and frustrates me because I am old and have not adapted well to technology changing 😂 But arguably, the skz fanbase doesn't want me on skztwt anyways so like it works for both of us lmfaooo. Oh how you loved your boyfriend; he was the type of man to wine and dine his lovers, even when they insisted that his attention was enough.

You’d been in a relationship with Tom for almost a year now, and the two of you were deemed very close friends in all the tabloids, but nothing more. You liked it that way; you were happy that way. It meant less drama, less attention, and it brought the two of you closer than ever.

Tom had been on tour in New York, and they’d decided to cut it short at the last minute. What he’d suspected to be a few more months away from home instantly became anxious waiting as he boarded a plane and prepared for takeoff.

A missed call from you lit up his phone, but his thoughts were so clouded with excitement that he hadn’t even noticed. Few times he had ever been able to surprise you; knowing how much you truly hated them.

What he hadn’t known was that, these past few weeks, in your quaint little home in London, you had started getting sick. Of course, you’d deemed it side affects of the common flu virus, and expected them to be over as quickly as they came.

Upon closer inspection, though, you’d realized that small things were triggering it. Something as simple as the smell of burnt toast could send you racing to the bathroom in a heartbeat. Which only made you panic that much more.

The calendar seemed to stare blankly back as you searched for your last period cycle, and came up with nothing for the entire month. Sure, Tom had only left for his tour a few weeks ago, but that couldn’t you were pregnant. Could it?

Pacing back and forth in your master bathroom, you’d scattered three pregnancy tests across the kitchen counter. One wasn’t enough. One could lie. Two could lie. But three? Three would get you the response you needed.

The timer was set, and your heart was racing. If you hadn’t known any better you’d have thought it was going to leap out of your chest. You wanted Tom to be here with you; for him to do what he always does best. He would pull you into his arms, running his fingers through your hair, holding you closely against him as if to make the whole world stop dead in its’ tracks.

A ringing cut through the silence, tearing you from your own mind, where you’d started to feel the semi comfortable presence of an absent Tom. Drifting off had somehow left you lonelier than before as you hit the button on your phone to cancel the timer - putting you right back into the empty silence.

Closing you eyes you finally made the risk of looking down at the sink where you found three positive tests, and a newfound hope for your future family. Sure you hadn’t been trying, but you knew Tom would love you both just the same. He had a way of making you feel like you hung the moon, and more than once he’d called you an angel.

That wasn’t to say you were perfect by any means. No; you were his blessing in disguise. When everything in the world seemed to come crashing down around him, you were the one thing he always knew would be there. All the fame and fortune aside - you were his world.

Somehow that world had just grown even bigger, though, as your hands drifted to your stomach and you found yourself smiling.

It had already been a week that you’d known, and you wanted more than anything to tell your exciting news to Tom. There wasn’t a doubt in your mind that he would be just as happy; if not more. Except, you couldn’t bring yourself to do it over the phone.

No, you wanted to see his reaction. To hold him in your arms after the words had left your lips. So you waited, and waited, and with each passing phone call you grew more and more anxious.

Finally, you couldn’t contain yourself any longer as you picked up the phone and rang his number.

No response.

Maybe he was busy? Being on tour did mean that his schedule was generally booked up completely. You knew sitting in this house all by yourself would drive you mad, so you’d made the executive decision to hop in your car for some window shopping at the local baby stores. It wouldn’t take your mind off of it, but it would be nice to see all the things you’d be buying in the near future.

You were stopped at a red light, less than five minutes from your destination. You knew exactly where the store had been - it was one of those places you always wanted to go to, but never had a reason to; until recently.

The light turned green, indicating for you to go, and just as you made it into the center of traffic you heard a loud smash and felt an immense amount of pain in your side.

Someone had collided with the front left side of your car, setting off the airbags, and pinning you in your vehicle. Either they hadn’t seen the light change, or they hadn’t cared as they’d attempted to turn. None of that mattered now, all that mattered was finding a way out.

Your heart was racing, and it felt like your head could split in two. The pain in your leg was enough to drive you insane, and when you looked down past the airbag you found that it was broken. There was a ringing in your ears, and the whole world was silent. You couldn’t keep your eyes open; the pain was too much. Everything started to blur together, and you found yourself drifting off without even knowing.

Bright lights surrounded you, and moving your hand you could feel an uncomfortable bed beneath you. Upon closer realization you’d realized that you were in your local hospital with monitors attached to you in more places than you would’ve ever wanted them to be.

A hand grasped yours tightly, pulling you closer to reality as your eyes slowly met Tom’s in the seat beside you. His face was contorted into a smile, but you knew it was all a clever act by the tears gleaming in his eyes.

“Y/N, I thought I lost you,” he sniffled, pressing a soft kiss to your forehead.

You rolled your eyes, trying to make a joke out of this whole thing. “You couldn’t get rid of me that easily,” you mocked.

Tom smirked, running his thumb across the back of your hand, soothingly, before the doctors came to check you over. The sudden shock of everything, mixed with the happiness of seeing your boyfriend, had completely taken your mind off of everything else.

“We’ve done some scans, and everything seems to be alright. You managed to escape with a broken leg, but that seems to be the only issue. You and your little one are lucky, Miss Y/L/N,” the doctor smiled, passing a few papers over to Tom with all of the information.

“Little one?” Tom questioned, looking closely at the paper where it said about the tests they’d done. Including one to make sure that the baby was still okay in your belly.

I guess you could say that I was a goodie two shoes and stayed out of trouble. I had never had any kind of real boyfriend as I was growing up, unless you want to count the week I dated this boy from my mums church. Our mums were best friends and I think we went to the movies once?

Its quite funny to be honest, I remember the day I asked him out simply because it’s just so hysterical. My best friend at the time had this crush on this guy “T” for what seemed forever. I made a deal with her that if she asked him out then I would ask out “A”. Turns out she did it that day and obviously I couldn’t back out. So there I am, gave him a call, told him I liked him and would like to go out with him some time. Next ting I knew he was telling me he had a girlfriend and I was mortified. Laughed and said oh okay, bye, and then I hung up. Do you ever mute the TV when it gets to an embarrassing of cringeworthy part of a show or movie? So I was texting “L” and mentioned where I was. next thing I know he told me he had travelled up to see me.

We spent ages talking outside of the train station as he had missed his last train home and I was still waiting for the guys. I don’t even know what was going through my head but next thing I knew we were having out first kiss… I don’t even really remember it, I had probably drunk a bit too much. I’m not really sure what happened after that but I know we were talking and then “D” and “B” came out of the station doors and asked if I was coming with them. I decided to stay with “L”. Thinking back, my life may have been so much different if I had just gone with them. But you cant change the past, just move forward.

So we ended up getting a taxi back to our home towns and during the ride the taxi driver asked if we were a couple and we looked at each other and just said yeah why not. Having grown up with fairytales, love stories and epic romantic declarations of love, I truly thought my first relationship would have started on a much more magical note. But no, I got a drunken make out and a whim starter. No dates, no courting, nothing.

We didn’t even get to live out an exciting “honeymoon” period. I think it was the next night or the one after… My nan was at the hospital at the time and me and my mum were on our way home when I got a phone call. I have no idea who the number belonged to but it turned out to be “L”’s mum. She told me that he had been jumped and was being rushed into hospital with a dislocated jaw. Don’t worry, he survived. He soon recovered and life went back to normal and things with us were magical. We saw each other at work all the time and whenever else we could. We spent time with his family, went out with work friends and seemed to be growing in the right direction.

Then the arguments started. We had been together for just over 6 months and he started picking at small things and pushing for arguments. I’ve never been someone who just accepts being yelled at when I’ve honestly done nothing wrong so would always push back. I remember one time he told me to choose between him and a friend and without a blink of an eye I chose my friend. She wasn’t even a fairly important friend but the thought that someone would try to control who I could and could not see enraged me. Things just seems to be getting worse.

One day, where as if by magic, we genuinely had a lovely day, had been talking about plans for the future and how I was going to be going to university. We spoke about how we were going to make the long distance work. I think he may have gotten a bit overwhelmed in the moment and he ended up proposing to me. It was a huge shock and it’s not that I wanted to break up, but I was 18, I was going to uni, I couldn’t say yes.

So the arguments went back to bad and just got worse.

Something that I should have probably already mentioned is that when I was 15/16 I was told that I ave a condition called PCOS. This means that little cysts are growing inside my ovaries and the severity of the one I had meant that I only had about a 5% chance of ever getting pregnant.

So with that information, to my utter surprise, even though we used protection and I was on contraception, I got pregnant. It was a miracle. But I was only 18 and I was just about to move away to university. I had no clue what to do. After getting tests, it turned out that I was 8 weeks gone. I’ve known people who got pregnant when they were younger and had gotten abortions but I just knew that I couldn’t let go of this miracle baby. What if this was my only chance to get pregnant? It wasn’t the ideal time or situation but how could I throw this away? Whenever I thought about the baby, it always felt like a boy, so from then on I’d always talk to him and tell him stories. I wanted him to know how much I already loved him and how thankful I was for him.

We were at work one weekend and I had planned to tell him about the pregnancy after work, once we were home, but he was in a fowl mood and started an argument with me on the shop floor. It’s not like we worked in a 5 star place but the job was keeping me going and funding my life so I couldn’t afford to loose it. I don’t even remember what the argument was about but I know he started throwing things around the store ( it was closed for stock take luckily ). “B” and “D” saw how distressed I was and took me aside to make sure I was okay and that just seemed to add fuel to the fire. I told “L” to go and cool off and come and see me after an hour or so. He went off and started to work with this girl, “B”, who I had only had a few conversations with prior. I was not a jealous person so it meant nothing to me.

He didn’t talk to me for the rest of the evening and said he wanted to just go home and sleep as he was tired. So I agreed and said I’d see him next week after work one day. Things seemed to be fine. As fine as they could be.

So the following weekend I went into work and it was like every other day. I got on with my tasks and caught up with friends. I was put onto tills to cover breaks and was genuinely having a good day. Oh boy was I wrong. Someone came up to me, who I wasn’t even really friends with, came up to me and asked me how I felt about “L” and “B”. I didn’t care, they were friends, he was my boyfriend and I wasn’t going to stop him from being friends with anyone. I remember like it was yesterday and the guy turned to me and went “No, they’re together now. Didn’t you know?”

In that moment I felt my heart shatter into a million pieces and the tears start to build up in the corner of my eyes.

The next few moments were a blur for me. I just remember going out into the backstage area and crying my eyes out. He was my boyfriend, how could he do this to me?

Time went on and “L” kept trying to contact me, saying it was over with her. I foolishly believed him and we were back together. I kept the baby a secret as I wanted to make sure we were going to be okay. One day when I was staying round his, I had a terrible gut feeling that something was wrong, and I know it was terrible of me to have gone through his phone but something told me I had to. Of course I found messages from her. They had never broken up. I felt like such an idiot. I woke him up, screaming at him. How could he do this to me again?! What was so wrong with my that I deserved this?

We broke up and I was starting to pack to move away. At this time I was coming up to 11 weeks gone and I still hadn’t told anyone. I mean how do you tell your family that the scum who has been hurting you for weeks is the father of the child growing inside you? I didn’t want to have anything to do with “L”, I didn’t want my child anywhere near the him.

Work was horrible, I still had to work with both of them and it killed me every time. Deep down I still loved him and wanted to be with him. In a last attempt I wrote him a letter and asked if I could see him to talk. Being the idiot I was, I believed everything he said and we agreed that we wanted to give it another go. He said that he was ending everything with her for good.

I was starting to show and it was going to be hard to hide it for any longer so I was preparing myself to tell people. The most perfect time arrived, it was my leaving meal with all of my family and family friends. I had decided what I wanted to say and how I wanted to approach it.

I got ready for the meal and we were leaving an about an hour. I was trying to get hold of “L” to talk to him before I went out but couldn’t get through. I couldn’t stop crying. My heart was pounding. I couldn’t breath. Everything was a blur around me. I’ve always had this weird thing happen to me when I get overly upset, I start to throw up. I cant tell you why because I have never uncovered why myself.

Next thing I knew I had this stabbing pain in my stomach. it was there one second and gone the next. It panicked me but made me snap out of everything I was feeling a focus on the baby. I sat there for a while and nothing hurt or seemed wrong, so I decided I’d call for a check up in the morning.

I took everything very slow and tried to stay as calm as I could. With all things considering, I still managed to have a lovely evening. I ended up crying at one point but played it off being upset that I was moving away.

I got home and tried to call “L”, still nothing. I didn’t even know what I wanted to say. What was there to say?

I started to get worked up again, and the pain was back but a million times worse. I was in bed a something felt really wrong. I couldn’t do anything because no one knew I was pregnant. I got up to walk around to try and ease the pain and there was a pool of blood where I had been sitting. I rushed to the toilet and just sat there crying as I felt the blood falling from me.

I called “L” what seemed like a million times. He finally answered. I told him that I was pregnant and that I was having a miscarried. I needed him to come and take me to the hospital. I heard “B” in the background and he was whispering to her, telling her what was happening. All he had to say was “you know I can’t do that.”

I was alone. My miracle baby was leaving me. I felt him slip out of me. My boy was gone and no one else knew or cared. I couldn’t save him. I wasn’t strong enough to hold him or keep him safe. I had done this and I would never forgive myself.

I took myself to hospital the following morning. “L” met me there and they confirmed that the miscarriage had happened. They said that the baby would have been roughly the size of a plumb or large lime. They gave me leaflets about miscarriages and numbers for support groups. “L” held my hand as we walked out. I didn’t hear from him for a week. I was morning loosing my baby all alone. I told him to never talk to me again. I blocked him and deleted him from everything. I wanted to leave him and every memory from him behind and start a new chapter. I knew it was going to take me a long time to recover from losing my miracle boy but I knew I had to look after myself and take time to process everything.

Time went by and the days got easier. I was focussing everything I had into my work at university. Then out of the blue one day I got a call from an unknown number. I answered it and it was “B”. part of me wanted to tell her to fuck off and hang up but I was curious as to what on earth she could want from me. I heard her out and it turned out that 2 weeks into “B” and “L” dating, after I said no to his proposal, he proposed to her and they had been engaged the entire time. “L” was cheating on her. On top of that she was pregnant. And to add insult to injury she was getting an abortion. She had everything I wanted and she was going to get rid of it. All the pain that I had worked so hard to overcome and conquer was back like a wave and it drowned me. I hung up the phone and let the waves crash around me. My boy was taken from me and she was going to get rid of hers just like that. Like it was nothing. She had the audacity to call and ask for advice. I’ll tell you some advice, go fuck yourself.

At 3am I was woken up by another call and in my half asleep state I answered it and was welcomed by someone screaming down the phone. It didn’t take me long to wake up and realise that the familiar voice screeching through my ears was “L”. He was saying that I had no right to talk to “B” and I should stay out of their lives. I couldn’t help but laugh and that only made him scream more. I mean of all things in my life, this was the thing I wanted least. She had reached out to me, he was now calling me. I didn’t give a rats arse about them. I told him to never call me again and tell her to never call me either. They were getting their karma and it was well due.

Since then I only spoke to “B” once more and that was when I went back to my old job for the summer between my 1st and 2nd year of uni. But thats another chapter down the line.

“L” cheated on “B” for a long time and she ended up getting the abortion. To this day, from what I have heard over the years, they are still together and now have a baby. A part of me hates that they have their happy little family and I was the one who was hurt but I know this was my path and all of this had to happen to lead me to where I am today.

But one thing I’ll say is that I no longer believe in princesses and fairytales. That part of me died the day I lost my little boy.

Love, lies and loss

I guess you could say that I was a good two shoes and stayed out of trouble. I had never had any kind of real boyfriend as I was growing up, unless you want to count the week I dated this boy from my mums church. Our mums were best friends and I think we went to the movies once?

Its quite funny to be honest, I remember the day I asked him out simply because it’s just so hysterical. My best friend at the time had this crush on this guy “T” for what seemed forever. I made a deal with her that if she asked him out then I would ask out “A”. Turns out she did it that day and obviously I couldn't back out. So there I am, gave him a call, told him I liked him and would like to go out with him some time. Next ting I knew he was telling me he had a girlfriend and I was mortified. Laughed and said oh okay, bye, and then I hung up. Do you ever mute the TV when it gets to an embarrassing of cringeworthy part of a show or movie? Well I wish that I could have muted my life right there and then. 

Thinking back to it I cant believe I had the balls to even call and do that but its just so funny. I want to say maybe an hour later he logged onto MSN ( Yes we are going THAT far back ) he started talking to me and I wanted to crawl into a ditch. He actually told me that he'd dumped his girlfriend and wanted to go out with me. WHAT IS THAT KIND OF MADDNESS?! Who even does that? 

Anyway, like I said, it lasted just over a week and then I was back to my boyless teenage years... 

Fast forward to 2013 just before my 18th and I had a crush on this guy who I worked with, “D”. He was the classic pretty boy who everyone liked. We went to college together and we just seemed to hit it off. Hung out a few times and had a couple of kisses but we decided we were better as friends. 

Anyway, dun dun dun I GOT A BOYFRIEND. 

“L” was a new guy at work. Not my type at all but he made me laugh and had this twinkle about him. One evening I was out in Southend at a gig with a few of my friends. They were all going home but I was meeting “D” and “B” ( another guy from work ) to go out clubbing. I hadn't heard form them all day so was a bit worried that I wouldn't be able to find them. So I was texting “L” and mentioned where I was. next thing I know he told me he had travelled up to see me. 

We spent ages talking outside of the train station as he had missed his last train home and I was still waiting for the guys. I don't even know what was going through my head but next thing I knew we were having out first kiss... I don't even really remember it, I had probably drunk a bit too much. I’m not really sure what happened after that but I know we were talking and then “D” and “B” came out of the station doors and asked if I was coming with them. I decided to stay with “L”. Thinking back, my life may have been so much different if I had just gone with them. But you cant change the past, just move forward. 

So we ended up getting a taxi back to our home towns and during the ride the taxi driver asked if we were a couple and we looked at each other and just said yeah why not. Having grown up with fairytales, love stories and epic romantic declarations of love, I truly thought my first relationship would have started on a much more magical note. But no, I got a drunken make out and a whim starter. No dates, no courting, nothing. 

We didn't even get to live out an exciting “honeymoon” period. I think it was the next night or the one after... My nan was at the hospital at the time and me and my mum were on our way home when I got a phone call. I have no idea who the number belonged to but it turned out to be “L”’s mum. She told me that he had been jumped and was being rushed into hospital with a dislocated jaw. Don’t worry, he survived. Quick op on his jaw and some metal staples or something. 

He soon recovered and life went back to normal and things with us were magical. We saw each other at work all the time and whenever else we could. We spent time with his family, went out with work friends and seemed to be growing in the right direction. 

Then the arguments started. We had been together for just over 6 months and he started picking at small things and pushing for arguments. I’ve never been someone who just accepts being yelled at when I’ve honestly done nothing wrong so would always push back. I remember one time he told me to choose between him and a friend and without a blink of an eye I chose my friend. She wasn't even a fairly important friend but the thought that someone would try to control who I could and could not see enraged me. Things just seems to be getting worse. 

One day, where as if by magic, we genuinely had a lovely day, had been talking about plans for the future and how I was going to be going to university. We spoke about how we were going to make the long distance work. I think he may have gotten a bit overwhelmed in the moment and he ended up proposing to me. It was a huge shock and it’s not that I wanted to break up, but I was 18, I was going to uni, I couldn't say yes. 

So the arguments went back to bad and just got worse. 

Something that I should have probably already mentioned is that when I was 15/16 I was told that I ave a condition called PCOS. This means that little cysts are growing inside my ovaries and the severity of the one I had meant that I only had about a 5% chance of ever getting pregnant. 

So with that information, to my utter surprise, even though we used protection and I was on contraception, I got pregnant. It was a miracle. But I was only 18 and I was just about to move away to university. I had no clue what to do. After getting tests, it turned out that I was 8 weeks gone. I’ve known people who got pregnant when they were younger and had gotten abortions but I just knew that I couldn't let go of this miracle baby. What if this was my only chance to get pregnant? It wasn't the ideal time or situation but how could I throw this away? Whenever I thought about the baby, it always felt like a boy, so from then on I’d always talk to him and tell him stories. I wanted him to know how much I already loved him and how thankful I was for him. 

We were at work one weekend and I had planned to tell him about the pregnancy after work, once we were home, but he was in a fowl mood and started an argument with me on the shop floor. It’s not like we worked in a 5 star place but the job was keeping me going and funding my life so I couldn’t afford to loose it. I don’t even remember what the argument was about but I know he started throwing things around the store ( it was closed for stock take luckily ). “B” and “D” saw how distressed I was and took me aside to make sure I was okay and that just seemed to add fuel to the fire. I told “L” to go and cool off and come and see me after an hour or so. He went off and started to work with this girl, “B”, who I had only had a few conversations with prior. I was not a jealous person so it meant nothing to me. 

He didn't talk to me for the rest of the evening and said he wanted to just go home and sleep as he was tired. So I agreed and said I'd see him next week after work one day. Things seemed to be fine. As fine as they could be. 

So the following weekend I went into work and it was like every other day. I got on with my tasks and caught up with friends. I was put onto tills to cover breaks and was genuinely having a good day. Oh boy was I wrong. Someone came up to me, who I wasn't even really friends with, came up to me and asked me how I felt about “L” and “B”. I didn't care, they were friends, he was my boyfriend and I wasn't going to stop him from being friends with anyone. I remember like it was yesterday and the guy turned to me and went “No, they're together now. Didn't you know?” 

In that moment I felt my heart shatter into a million pieces and the tears start to build up in the corner of my eyes. 

The next few moments were a blur for me. I just remember going out into the backstage area and crying my eyes out. He was my boyfriend, how could he do this to me? 

Time went on and “L” kept trying to contact me, saying it was over with her. I foolishly believed him and we were back together. I kept the baby a secret as I wanted to make sure we were going to be okay. One day when I was staying round his, I had a terrible gut feeling that something was wrong, and I know it was terrible of me to have gone through his phone but something told me I had to. Of course I found messages from her. They had never broken up. I felt like such an idiot. I woke him up, screaming at him. How could he do this to me again?! What was so wrong with my that I deserved this? 

We broke up and I was starting to pack to move away. At this time I was coming up to 11 weeks gone and I still hadn't told anyone. I mean how do you tell your family that the scum who has been hurting you for weeks is the father of the child growing inside you? I didn't want to have anything to do with “L”, I didn't want my child anywhere near the him. 

Work was horrible, I still had to work with both of them and it killed me every time. Deep down I still loved him and wanted to be with him. In a last attempt I wrote him a letter and asked if I could see him to talk. Being the idiot I was, I believed everything he said and we agreed that we wanted to give it another go. He said that he was ending everything with her for good. 

I was starting to show and it was going to be hard to hide it for any longer so I was preparing myself to tell people. The most perfect time arrived, it was my leaving meal with all of my family and family friends. I had decided what I wanted to say and how I wanted to approach it. 

I got ready for the meal and we were leaving an about an hour. I was trying to get hold of “L” to talk to him before I went out but couldn't get through. I received a text out of the blue from a girl at work asking how I was feeling about “L”, I replied saying we were back together and things were going well. It’s like it was everyones mission to ruin every little bit of happiness I had. She explained that they were together, and “B” was posting pictures of her and her boyfriend.. my boyfriend. 

I couldn’t stop crying. My heart was pounding. I couldn’t breath. Everything was a blur around me. I’ve always had this weird thing happen to me when I get overly upset, I start to throw up. I cant tell you why because I have never uncovered why myself. 

Next thing I knew I had this stabbing pain in my stomach. it was there one second and gone the next. It panicked me but made me snap out of everything I was feeling a focus on the baby. I sat there for a while and nothing hurt or seemed wrong, so I decided I'd call for a check up in the morning. 

I took everything very slow and tried to stay as calm as I could. With all things considering, I still managed to have a lovely evening. I ended up crying at one point but played it off being upset that I was moving away. 

I got home and tried to call “L”, still nothing. I didn't even know what I wanted to say. What was there to say? 

I started to get worked up again, and the pain was back but a million times worse. I was in bed a something felt really wrong. I couldn’t do anything because no one knew I was pregnant. I got up to walk around to try and ease the pain and there was a pool of blood where I had been sitting. I rushed to the toilet and just sat there crying as I felt the blood falling from me. 

I called “L” what seemed like a million times. He finally answered. I told him that I was pregnant and that I was having a miscarried. I needed him to come and take me to the hospital. I heard “B” in the background and he was whispering to her, telling her what was happening. All he had to say was “you know I can’t do that.” 

I was alone. My miracle baby was leaving me. I felt him slip out of me. My boy was gone and no one else knew or cared. I couldn’t save him. I wasn't strong enough to hold him or keep him safe. I had done this and I would never forgive myself. 

I took myself to hospital the following morning. “L” met me there and they confirmed that the miscarriage had happened. They said that the baby would have been roughly the size of a plumb or large lime. They gave me leaflets about miscarriages and numbers for support groups. “L” held my hand as we walked out. We both looked at each other and as a tear fell down my face he just held me. What are you meant to do in that situation? What are you meant to say?

I feel I should only pay insurance for the remaining two months on this year's policy since, if I would have had an accident, the insurance company would not have covered me.
