📅 This day - on July 3, 1991, Apple and IBM signed a letter of intent to form the AIM alliance, which included Motorola. This alliance aimed to create an industry-wide open-standard computing platform based on the POWER instruction set architecture.
💻 The primary goal was to design a new hardware platform and develop a next-generation operating system that would unify the computing industry. IBM planned to bring the Macintosh OS into the enterprise market, while Apple aimed to be a major customer for the new POWER hardware.
🛠️ IBM and Motorola allocated 300 engineers to co-develop chips at a joint facility in Austin, Texas. Motorola would manufacture and sell these chips to Apple and other customers. Over 400 people from the three companies worked to create a unified corporate culture, promising to "change the landscape of computing in the 90s."
🤝 Despite initial enthusiasm, relations soured, especially after Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1998. Jobs ended the Power Macintosh clone licensing, leading to a contentious relationship with Motorola. This resulted in Apple being demoted to "just another customer" for PowerPC CPUs. Apple and IBM briefly expelled Motorola from the alliance, forcing it to halt PowerPC production until it was reinstated in 1999.

Developer Jeff Raskin loved the Macintosh apple so much he named an Apple computer after it. According to prevention.com, Gala is the number one favorite apple in the US and Macintosh is the number six. WARNING stop reading now if you are allergic to Dad jokes! What is the left side of an apple? The part you don’t eat. And a bonus one- Why doesn’t Apple make cars? Apple products can’t install Windows.

Apple May Make You Wait Another Year for The Next iMac
The 2021 version of the iMac remains Apple’s only version of the line available newPhoto: Caitlin McGarry/Gizmodo For those who love the slimmed down, 24-inch experience of an iMac sitting pretty on top of your desk—no tower necessary—you may need to keep on keeping on with the current build. A credible analyst told readers Sunday to sit tight if they want any more info on a new version of the…

🇺🇲 Explore the intriguing story of the Motorola StarMax, a line of licensed Macintosh clones from the mid-1990s. Produced by Motorola Information Systems Group between 1996 and 1997, the StarMax series sought to offer users an interesting alternative to traditional Macintosh computers.
💻 The StarMax computers were built upon versions of Apple's Tanzania motherboard, designed to incorporate both standard IBM PC compatible components and Apple-proprietary components used in the Power Macintosh family. This innovative approach allowed for increased flexibility and compatibility in hardware configurations.
💾 Setting themselves apart from Apple's offerings, StarMax computers featured SVGA video ports and PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports, alongside Apple's ADB ports. Despite the motherboard's capability for manual-eject floppy drives, Motorola opted for software-eject drives, a decision that would shape the user experience of these machines.
💔 Unfortunately, the StarMax line met an untimely end in September 1997 when Apple terminated the Macintosh clone license program. This decision strained relations between Motorola and Apple, ultimately leading to Motorola's expulsion from the AIM alliance—a significant setback for the company.

My First Computer: A Nostalgic Journey to the Early 1990s #firstcomputer #dailyprompt @WordPress
Write about your first computer.#Dailyprompt by @WordPress The early 1990s was a time of technological advancements and growth in the world of personal computers. It was during this time that I took the leap of faith and bought my first computer. And I must say, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. My first computer was a Macintosh Performa 550, also known as ‘Hook33’,…

Hello there! I was wondering, what media inspired cookie clicker to be what it is today? I was thinking of plague inc's "newsboard" which really got me thinking. What sort of games or media do you take inspiration from? Thanks!
Cookie Clicker was initially made for laughs, the whole gameplay loop mostly expanding on the lollipop farm feature in Candy Box:
Tumblr media
(as a sidenote, the reason i've promised a dungeons minigame for about 10 years now is entirely because Candy Box had them)
the game's current presentation and design logic stem from the years i spent as a kid playing old macintosh shareware as well as my interest in skeuomorphic UI. if you browse through Macintosh Garden long enough you're bound to find some of the stuff i obsessed over between 7 and 17 and i'm sure a lot of it has subconsciously found its way into the way i make my games.
some of Cookie Clicker's major features originate from early player suggestions and from reading discussions about the budding idle game genre, ie. the prestige/ascend system was added after i read people discussing a flash game named Kaguya Table (which involves a feature called "mastery"):
Tumblr media
the ascend screen itself takes after Path of Exile's passive skill tree:
Tumblr media
i've been asked before where the creepy grandmapocalypse body horror idea comes from and for the most part the answer is i'm just kind of a little freak like that. Cookie Clicker's initial "made-in-4-hours" version ended with the grandma building going bonkers and replacing the whole background. i'd been into Junji Ito and similar things for some time at that point so turning it into a whole thing for the "i'm making this game seriously actually" version felt like a logical step. pretend the Junji Ito image i'm including is from his gorier stuff
Tumblr media
finally, the kitten upgrades and possibly the whole "achievements grant milk" thing were added at the insistent request of a tumblr user who really really wanted me to add cats to the game somehow.
if you were specifically curious about the news ticker at the top of the game, i more or less directly lifted that from the one in SimCity!

AN APPLE MACINTOSH ‘PICASSO’ DEALER SIGN
APPLE COMPUTER INC., 1984
Illuminated etched glass sign on plastic base.
An icon of the Macintosh era.
The Apple Macintosh 'Picasso' Dealer Sign, produced in the mid-1980s, was a distinctive promotional item used by Apple dealers to showcase the Macintosh computers. Shaped like a stylized apple with a bite taken out, reminiscent of the Apple logo, the 'Picasso' sign featured colorful graphics and illuminated elements that made it stand out in retail environments. These signs were not only eye-catching but also symbolized Apple's innovative and artistic approach to computing, reflecting the Macintosh's graphical capabilities and user-friendly design.
Susan Kare (b.1954) was the artist/designer behind the core graphics of the original Macintosh, including its marketing material. With its many typefaces and icons (the smiling Macintosh, the CTRL key symbol, the trashcan), her graphics were truly a visual language that defined the identity of Macintosh and of Apple's pioneering GUI computing. The Pablo Picasso reference is telling in itself. Kare was trained as a fine artist and had no technological or computing experience before joining Apple in 1982. She was precisely the type of hip, creative professional that became the target audience for the Mac. The 'Picasso' Dealer Sign became a sought-after collector's item, representing an era when Apple was revolutionizing personal computing with its iconic Macintosh lineup.
