It’s fun watching everyone break down every week when a beloved song of theirs is chosen for the surprise song when they’re not there when almost every song I wanted to hear is part of the permanent set list💅🏽

ttpd review: thoughts (and prayers)
cuz wtf was that. (also providing my two cents that no one gives a shit about)
Is the promotion in the room with us?
Not going to lie, this part pissed me off. As a post evermore release swiftie, the first album release I got was midnights. And while the promotion for midnights wasn't astoundingly genius, the track list release (midnights mayhem with me) was smart. Everyday, there would be chaos all over social media of taylor taking out a number and releasing the track name. The excitement over YOYOK was to die for. But after reaching peak fame, girlie just decided shit wasn't necessary anymore. Absolutely no promotion for ttpd, except a few lyrics that provided no context (or excitement) whatsoever. That, and the very non subtle "hinting" of some big reveal of what went down between her and joe, by making some playlists, that not only ruined the perspective of many of her fans and the relationship they had with her previous songs, but ALSO. THE ALBUM HAD BARELY ANYTHING ABOUT JOE. (Not that i personally care about what happened, but it was so unnecessary to center the ONLY promotion done around someone who was barely a part of the album). Swifties went on the internet to harass joe alwyn (and his female coworkers) who might as well be called a special mention on a matty healy album. Why even do all that then? We will never know.
Confusion?
taylor released 31 songs, and while a double album theory coming true would be a dream come true for any swiftie, it just... wasn't. Out of 31 songs, barely 10 stood out. Some of it just didn't make sense, in any way. "Why is this on the album?" "This sounds like a midnights vault track." "No issues, maybe this is just a skip. I'll listen to the next. Oh wait nvm. Um." Like girl what. It just feels like a giant vault album of synth pop music.
Also, it's called the tortured poets department. There is barely anything poetic or tortured about the album aesthetic. Except maybe it's torturing me, but I'm as much of a poet as she is, which basically means I'm not one.
The album just feels so different than the other albums, in the sense that they followed an aesthetic, a certain style of music and lyrics, and created some sort of story. This one just feels like she wrote many songs and put them all on an album, picked whatever track name seemed interesting enough as the album name, and called it a day. Some of the songs are gems, some create a confusion as to why they are on this album, and some just make you cringe- or atleast go "wtf". Which is fine, but if not even half the songs fall under the first category out of 30 songs, then it's a problem.
These were written by... taylor?
The lyrics omfg. I'm not going to be one of those ppl who go around saying that the lyrics sounded like an emo middle schooler (I've heard this take) BUT again, some songs have lyrics that make you question how taylor, someone who wrote the albums folklore and evermore, and many great songs like would've, could've, should've, story of us, all too well, fearless, white horse, dbatc, daylight, red... I could keep going tbh, produced...this.
It was very weird to listen to the words "tattooed golden retriever" from someone who wrote "handsome, you're a mansion with a view" (also who the FUCK is calling matty healy that??)
A very important part of taylor's music is how it is focused on the lyrics. The music itself isn't the most special, or different, in most of her songs, but what makes them (and her) special is her songwriting. However, from her songwriting going from commonly used phrases and idioms to make them tell a story, use a wide range of vocabulary, heavily using personification, allusion, transferred epithet, and a few other figures of speech that she uses in her songs to make elements such as colours, for example, tell a story, in a way it seemed effortless and fit perfectly, to this... now it feels like she's trying to do that, but that's it. She's TRYING, and it's not yielding results, and seems more like a try hard "poet" rather than... whatever she was going for. The songs are filled with self-satisfied "clever" metaphors that are being reused and recycled over and over. This is not what ppl meant when they asked you to be more environmentally friendly, taylor.
Final thoughts I guess?
While the songs are basically only an empty shell of something that taylor used to make, the album isn't all bad. Some of the songs do sound good and go well with taylor's voice (aaron dessner, the fucking legend you are) and are quite enjoyable, if not as memorable as her other songs.
There are songs such as the prophecy, clara bow, so long, london, loml, guilty as sin?, etc., that really do come through and honestly I really like them.
I do feel that the album can grow on people, but it's just... not the best. Like she says so much, and not to quote taylor swift, but genuinely the only thing in my head right now is "the more you say, the less I know".
Overall, the album is fine, but not in taylor swift standards. It's just... not bad, with some exceptions.

is it still unpopular opinion time?
- chloe et al is a beautifully written song, but the production is SO boring. like give it some life or something. someone on TikTok made a mashup of the song with cowboy like me, which isn’t exactly sonically exciting either, but it made a world of a difference. the lyrics are stunning, though.
- I think it’s pretty easy to tell who each song on ttpd is about. loml and peter are the only ones that feel mixed to me (other than fots, fortnight, and gas, which explicitly mention two different people). other than that I don’t really see a ton of the mixed muse thing. the relationships are similar, which makes it confusing, but there’s still a tonal difference between something like so long london and down bad to me.
- imgonnagetyouback would also benefit from livelier production. I also really don’t love the chorus even though the song is otherwise great lyrically
- I think ttpd doesn’t have as many clear standouts as her previous albums. they’re there, but I don’t see anything like yoyok or wcs that takes her songwriting to a new level. that said, I think one of the most impressive qualities of the album is just how consistent it is in quality. it’s very hard to make a 31-song album where every single one is well-written.
- idk if this is an unpopular opinion, but I had to say it. one of my favorite things about ttpd is actually the fact that she’s soooo affected by everything. like she’s on top of the world, she feels untouchable, and yet she is still unashamed to tell us just how much these two men broke her down. that’s pretty admirable imo. also, her relationship with fame affected her a lot differently than I originally thought. midnights paints a much simpler picture of that than ttpd does imo
i agree that cososom, while lyrically super interesting, is sonically... flat. it makes sense to me why that song was given more "bonus track" treatment.
i agree even if it causes a stir. like, joe is the cause, matty is the effect, but i do think she wrote several of them with a specific person in mind as you said.
i love imgonnagetyouback but i wish it had more of a traditional big chorus! much like lavender haze, i kinda wish someone would release a really good poppy remix that gives us that. it reminds me of the archer, in a way, that i feel like i'm just waiting for the sonic payoff. but it made sense in the archer, not sure why it's like that in this one.
i agree. i'm not sure which ones will have a lot of longevity with the fandom except the manuscript.
i would LOVE for you to speak more about your thoughts on how she was affected by fame!

im thinking about how taylor was most likely going to announce song titled at each show and it has me thinking extra hard about the song choices and what track she’d reveal…
Tumblr media
so my thoughts tgat have no proof are real:
fortnight: if it’s similar to a dear reader and holy ground mash up i think it’ll be taylor picking up sort of where she left off on midnights. or maybe it’s the “never take advice from someone who’s falling apart” her and she’s acknowledging the death of this relationship and the good and bad in it
the tortured poet’s department: i think this’ll be interesting because ever since 1989 (loosely red) the opening tracks of taylor albums feel less like it’s own song and written solely for the intention of being an opener. that’s not bad, a log of artists or musicals do it. but because of that the second song is usually how one kicks off the album. you got your opener, now it’s time to start the show.
just going solely off the songs im thinking it’s taylor maybe reminiscing or looking back at falling in love for the first time, or these other times where he touched her hand as she was about to leave and convinced her to stay. but with the added context of eyes open it feels like she’s now looking back at the beginning or even middle or these parts she so heavily romanticized for years without the rose colored glasses on and is really see it for what it was and is… two tortured poets working and living together…
my boy only breaks his favorite toys: this is an interesting surprise song combo, because both songs deal with this idea of being on the outside, longing for more, and just trying to figure out how to get it. but superman is also interesting because with other songs from the speak now vault we know the reason why superman kept flying away was because he didn’t really care and was stringing her along for so long. and that’s similar with the outside. pushing her away when all she wants is to be loved and accepted. but since superman is here im thinking it’ll probably go into this person she loved and was waiting to come back around but never did and left her alone
DOWN BAD: so the song combo of come in with the rain and yoyok is so interesting. because in ciwtr taylor is saying she tired of trying to get this guy to realize how she feels or finds her. but she’s still leaving the window open, while she’s to tired to keep fighting she also still has this hope he’ll come around… we hear this on yoyok in the first verse. so it might be taylor being so down bad for him she’s willing to wait it out and wait for him to come back but she’s also recognizing she’s probably really alone again after spending so much time thinking she never was going to be alone again.

Hi, May!
Had my first seminar session today and it actually went pretty great! Maybe the next couple weeks will be at least a little less exhausting than anticipated ☺️
I’ll definitely let you know about bridgerton!
The intriguing thing about the play is that all the roles are played by just five actresses and the theatre describes it as having „quick-changes, upstairs/downstairs mayhem, and pop style musical performances“, so I can’t wait to see what that all entails!
Also Florida is probably one of my favourite songs from the album! And I also love the ttpd set! There’s some other songs I would have loved to see her perform (the alchemy or imgonnagetyouback 👀) but overall I was just really freaking out when I watched that grainy livestream of the first Europe show (especially when she got to so high school!! I just love cute love songs)
And about the surprise songs: i don’t really have a preference? But I think I might die if she plays death by a thousand cuts (I love that bridge so much) or yoyok. What about you? Anything you’re hoping for?
Hi there!
Oh that sounds great! The first class/seminar/thing of a series is always the most exciting one cause you never know how it ends up and it sets the tune for the whole time 🥰
That really does sound intriguing - certainly not something I have seen before but ngl the pop style musical performances x austen story lines just sounds like a combo from heaven 👀
imgonnagetyouback is such a good one!!! And I totally feel you on So High School, her feeld good love songs are just 🥺❤️ As for the surprise songs, I am right there with you on death by a thousand cuts, the bridge is just *chef's kiss* There are so many good ones and I change my mind every single time but Florida!!! would be up there, DBATC, ofc, and then maybe Paper Rings or Clara Bow or The Manuscript or Dear Reader or any other one really 😂

asking you the same question because i need to know that: your favourite song from each taylor's album, LETS GO
I’ve been waiting for this question my entire life
Debut: Should’ve Said No (the vibes, also @redwidow616 post about Eliza singing it>>)
Fearless: Mr. Perfectly Fine, I scream this song with all my heart and soul (The Way I Loved You and You’re Not Sorry are very close too)
Speak Now: Back to December, the lyrics are so close and I always imagine someone singing it to me as an apology (kinda oversharing here lmao) (I can see you is second)
Red: ATWTMVTVFTV for obvious reasons (honourable mention to Treacherous and Everything Has Changed)
1989: New Romantics (OOTW being second)
Reputation: Delicate, I love the song and the MV and the overall vibe (I have memorised the entire choreo in the mv because I love the symbolism behind it)
Lover: Cornelia Street and It’s Nice To Have A Friend (especially the live from Paris version of Cornelia Street)
Folklore: IM BASIC FOR THIS BUT CARDIGAN (exile and betty are close)
Evermore: CHAMPAGNE PROBLEMS BECAUSE THE BRIDGEEEEEEE
Midnights: Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve, YOYOK and The Great War (I couldn’t choose between the holy 3)

What's your reasoning behind Midnights being February and Speak Now being May 👀? It's just that I always associated Midnights with autumn (because of the YOYOK lyric) and Speak Now with winter because of BTD + Never Grow Up (though I did lean towards spring because of the purple + Mine mv + Enchanted)
hi jake!!
speak now was honestly one i didn't consider long, it just fit nicely into may for me based on vibes. i think it comes from the youthfulness of the album, and all the whimsical energy which i think fits nicely into that transition between spring and summer. may is also a month when a lot of things are in bloom after the initial april tulips, which includes big dramatic dalias and peonies, and also some purple blooms like lavender and wisteria. i see some of its moods being more wintery, but i also liked the idea of it being fresh and spunky and dreamy going into summer.
midnights was one that did take me a bit more deliberation, but i always believed it was a winter album. the yokok lyric — i assume you're referring to 'sprinkler splashes to fireplace ashes'? — was never so much an indication of summer to autumn to me as an acknowledgement that it was always the same in summer and winter? maybe i'm wrong idk. but midnights is such a reflective, almost wallowy album that i felt belonged in winter because those are the months that i sit around reliving the past and waiting for spring to rejuvenate me. ultimately, i felt december was taken more comfortably by evermore, and reputation, as an album celebrating rebirth/reinvention, belonged in janurary. i think feburary also works for midnights to me because it's the last (and arguably most depressing) month of winter that always feels like just waiting for spring and thus somehow life to start again. it does have the romantic reprise of valentine's day, of course, which works for songs like lavender haze or sweet nothing. i think the general dark blue mood of it also just felt like winter to me.
your interpretations are so valid and of course this is all just up to personal interpretation and preference. hope mine makes some sense though?
the edit in question, for spectators

Okay now I’m thinking about longevity in the fandom and ttpd which is SO interesting because she’s putting out so so much material and people’s shortening attention spans and all… the staying power definitely feels different, versus people who were here pre-Lover, waiting 2ish years between albums meant you listened to the albums a LOT. You’d easily remember all the words to Sparks Fly even by the time 1989 was out, because you had 2+ years of Speak Now being the recent Taylor album and only Red in between. (Of course I still remember all her lyrics but I’m insane. Ttpd is a slightly different story though, there’s So Much.)
Anyway, idk if that point before made sense, but I could see a few songs having longevity. I agree about The Manuscript because it’s so rich and ties together some very big people and motifs and experiences. I could see Guilty as Sin? because spice and it’s got an addictive quality not unlike Dress (but the opposite as I’m pretty sure you’ve said… but similar!). Possibly also So Long London (sad bop/bookend the Joever, track 5, beautiful intro), Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me? (her fame songs tend to stick around, even the more “obscure” ones like The Lucky One, because there aren’t many and her views on it continue to evolve; same applies to Clara Bow, but I doubt it will be as popular just due to the sound tbh, like cardigan vs peace, traditional song structure and sounds tends to win in the fandom). The others are a toss-up and this is getting long so I’ll stop but yeah felt the need to share ajdjsjd
yeah and those albums had multiple singles, music videos, tons of radio play and promo... looots of time to let them sink in. and after 13+ years of releasing music, she knows some of it will get lost in the shuffle (like deep cuts, or simply older tracks - 'if you know this one, sing it, because it's old' re: crazier recently.)
i think ttpd has some bops - guilty as sin?, maybe down bad, icdiwabh. and i agree who's afraid will have some longevity because of its message (same with i can do it.) but there's like, this category of Meaningful Taylor Songs that say something about her life or relationship with her career, like long live, yoyok, wcs... i wonder which ones will fall in that category? maybe the prophecy (in addition to icdiwabh and waolom)?

I'm going to play devil's advocate (and go delulu) for a moment here: I think Taylor's going to be single for a while now. Why? You're On Your Own, Kid. I've always read tracks 5's as the point of the album. Some examples (im trying to keep it brief and I apologize for spelling mistakes and auto-corrects, it's 1 AM where I'm at):
All Too Well from Red, an album about how complicated emotions can be, has arguably her most "emotional rollercoaster" of a song as track 5.
Dear John from Speak Now, an album loosely based on the concept of "things she should have told people, but never did." has a song directly addressed to Mayer as track 5.
tolerate it from evermore, which I always read as an album about moving on from the past, has a song that discusses a failing relationship (which is heavily implied to have been a marriage or just really long) which, at the end, Taylor is implied to be leaving due to how unfulfilling it is, even if it was once great *coughs in Joe Alwyn* as track 5.
my tears ricochet from folklore, which I always read as an album about directly addressing the hurt the past caused, but not healing from it, has a song that discusses the pain of losing a partner, but explicitly not moving on, as the man still wears the jewels, missing her, while also tossing out blame *cough in Hiddleston/Harris affair and Harry Styles (my favorite duo (Hiddle)/trio (Calcium being an intrusion to all that is good))* and Taylor still speaks to him, while screaming at the sky, and feels she can go anywhere, just not home (which I see as symbolism for love in all TS songs) as the track 5.
Delicate from reputation, which discusses forbidden romance, has the most obvious example of portraying the theme, while also subtly hinting at the relationship being over already in the bridge and her only reminiscing and hoping to be remembered *cough in rep is about Hiddleston delusion*, as the track 5 (yes, I'm the Hiddleswift truther from earlier, hello).
These are the most obvious ones, to me at least.
You're On Your Own, Kid is a funny song in all possible readings of Midnights. I take the album as the third part of the reminiscence trilogy, as I've dubbed it. folklore is about addressing the past, evermore about moving on from it, and Midnights about learning from it. I take each song as her comparing a past situation to her circumstances with Alwyn (YOYOK past situation is obvious so I won't talk about that).
She starts with summer went away, I've always taken summer as symbolic of Hiddleston, but her yearning for love remained, and she tried to play it off as if it's cool, even if it wasn't, because if she did, that relationship would blow up in both their faces, with people already thinking it was PR and Kanye being a clown.
Alternatively, it could be refrencing the end of the honeymoon phase with Alwyn.
She then waits patiently, wanting to be noticed by a friend she likes (Alwyn), whom she potentially chased just because she misses the summer. The anyway is to me, a timeskip, of sorts. He's distant now, smoking with his boys, likely without telling Taylor about it, given that she heard it in his voice (disappearing at random for reasons she's not sure about; I swear I saw paparazzi pics of him kissing Laird in 2022, but I can't provide links, I just know I freaked out) and she touches her phone like it's his face, maybe because they don't talk much anymore and there's distance. In regard to the town line, it might be about how she's grown more closed off since Alwyn. She didn't chose this, she wants to be more open, but she'd stay like this for him. Forever, if need be.
She thought she waited years to meet him, that he's the one, only to learn he never cared and there were better options. All this time she was on her own, and didn't even realize.
She then decides she'll run away because she knows he doesn't love her. The Daisy May part is interesting because that's a nice, obedient woman. Joe Alwyn? Controlling? I wouldn't be shocked.
Now, she takes a taxi to take her there. When else has she used the word taxi? Come Back...Be Here and New Year's Day, ladies and gentlemen, certified Haylor songs. She also mentions dreams not being rare, which Wildest Dreams, ladies and gentlemen, certified Haylor song. It also repeats the better bodies part, meaning Harry was, in her eyes, the better option at that point. I think, Harry and Taylor were communicating throughout COVID after the first Grammy meeting and Harry knew Taylor was having doubts about Joe, que Boyfriends and Matlida, and he may have helped her mourn the relationship before it was over. During their midnight talking chats, he finally told her he still thinks of her, and she acknowledges it here, saying he wasn't alone in that.
She then proclaims how much she's given for a perfect kiss, but it solved nothing, because Joe wasn't perfect and how her friends (also the world and the fans) won't know what to say when she tells them. How the jokes weren't funny (the ones about her being everything and him being just Ken), which she's probably from his perspective, but sarcastically, because it was true, and how she took all the money with her, because he has very little in comparison. Her gown is bloody now, because she just destroyed her chances of ever marrying Joe, whom she wanted that with. But this was a step forward and she shouldn't be afraid. And he can't take away her future experiences. He can talk shit all he wants, it won't change that this is good for her.
So she'll make some frienship braclets and just exist for a little. And she can do that. She's on her own. She has been for a very long time.
- Faithfully, a delulu Alwyn not-enjoyer
I think you’re right about TS & HS communicating right before Covid. I have a theory on this. Both their albums had just come out Lover & Fine Line ( on TS birthday). And there are several things I put together from articles & interviews. I might make a post about it. Covid hits & TS goes off & right folklore & evermore ( with lots of Haylor songs) and HS writes HH (which to me every song is about TS). Satellite he says “I can see you’re lonely down there” so yea Harry knew there were problems with them.
And I never thought about Delicate being about TH. Makes a lot more sense than joe. That timeline is all kind of whack. It doesn’t make sense to me. She meets joe April 29th & is just blown away by him & so into him then a week later she’s being all flirty with TH at the Met & completely ignores joe & gets with TH?
I think she’s probably gonna be single at least till the end of tour maybe. She’s super busy at the moment.

Text
my preliminary track by track
Lavender Haze: Not what I thought it would be, but somehow better??? she mentioned the engagement rumors!!! also like..... the chorus is so bouncy and I love it so much. It gives off nyd vibes to me in that I think this song is like a promise of commitment
Maroon: my first thought on my first listen was "is this a haylor song???? and then when she said "that's a fucking legacy" i was like "AHHHH” now though, I think it’s about Karlie. Whoever it’s about, I think it’s beautiful. When we got the title, my first thought was “Red but darker” and I still think that… it’s like… dirty red. and I need to flesh that out more, but I’m spending time with other songs and I’ll get back to Maroon.
Anti-Hero: I CRIED LIKE A BABYthe chorus, introducing herself as the problem!!! then oh my god calling her depression by its name!!!, daughter in law was interesting to me too.... the implication she would have a kid also its a fucking bop that made me want to die. It still does. Its so relatable and honest and genuine and I would die for her.
Snow on the Beach: the sweetest thing i’ve ever heard, that second verse transcends language.
You’re on Your Own Kid: To me, this song is about celebrating choices. it’s knowing you made your own choices, and no one made them for you. It’s knowing you’ll make your own choices again. And it’s learning to trust yourself and your choices. The uplifting way the end happens and everything swells… I just think it’s like…….. about growing into trusting yourself and I have a lot I want to dive into about it being track 5 specifically that I haven’t had the time to. but my first thoughts are that it’s track 5 because the thesis of this album is about choices
Midnight Rain: This is my favorite song after anti-hero. I love the alterations on her voice but also “I wanted that pain” is a lyric that will haunt me forever. But more than anything, this song really fleshed out the ttds/dorthea story and that contextualizes a lot of evermore for me. i think there’s so much to be said about her relationship with fame and her choices around that, which ties into yoyok. I just think this song provides rich context to her life and also normalizes her fame while discussing its abnormality. I have so much I could say
Question…?: Obvious haylor song that makes me endlessly happy to hear it. It’s remarkable to me that the haylor song Taylor writes looking back years later still doesn’t have any closure. and then she opens up the idea that everyone is second best in comparison to her for him and i just have so many feelings and most of it is just like KJAKLDJFLK THIS WOMAN WILL NOT LET THIS MAN JUST LIVE like she really was like “hey…. i’m the love of your life and you can’t have me…. KK BYE” like lol and she knows what she’s doing which is why she’s like “it’s just a question” like yeah it’s just a question that’s unnecessary!!! anyway, i’m glad she made the decision to poke that particular bear because i love hearing them write about each other. i hope he responds.
Vigilante Shit: She came for Scooter’s jugular. Anyway, I love this song. It’s so different from anything else she’s done and yet is 100% the same as mad woman and no body no crime. I haven’t spent the time with it I would need to spend to have more thoughts
Bejeweled: My first thought was that this is about Calvin or Jake. But the more I listen to it, the more it feels almost like she’s personified her depression and is singing to it. I LOVE the “i can still make the whole place SHIMMER” “I can still say I don’t REMEMBER” like it just sounds SO good!! I think this is going to be a song I use to personify my depression, whether that’s what she was doing or not.
Labyrinth: I need the lyrics in front of me and more time to feel this song the way I need to feel it…. But this THIS  this…………. it’s the process of the healing she has been singing about the whole time… Daylight/the whole rep album/evermore. I can’t wait to listen to this in the middle of a breakdown and feel completely understood and have a direction. and that production on her vocals from midnight rain!! i love it!! also its soakljalkjlk the way it swells at the end and gets progressively lighter and happier…. IT’S ABOUT THE HEALING JOURNEY
Karma: I know that reddit hates the playful lyrics but i lOVE THEM!! “Karma is a cat purring on my lap cause it loves me” I NEED HER TO KNOW THAT THIS IS THE MOST INCREDIBLE THING I’VE HEARD!! It gives me the playful freedom/I’m moving on vibes that ibytam gives. And coming right after labyrinth… the two of these songs work in tandem to me. It’s about healing. I love this song
Sweet Nothings: I am so glad that it really is a love song about them they wrote together. “You say what a mind/this happens all the time” I love that! I’m going need a lot more time with it before I have more complex thoughts especially about “to you I can admit that I’m just too soft for all of it”
Mastermind: KLSJADFLKJASDKLF COWBOY LIKE ME HAS ITS MOMENT IN THE SUN I, again need to spend more time with it before I have more complex words… but it really feels, again like it’s about choices. She made the choices that led her here with Joe and she planned to love him forever. She saw him that first night she came home and wrote the barebones of Gorgeous (and the fucking reference!!!!JKljdlaskfjlkI CAN’T) and every choice after that made this all possible. And he made choices too and it made all of it happen. “No one wanted to play with me as a little kid” I WANT TO DIE and this song is just kjsadlfkjkl I don’t have the words. I just get overwhelmed with this song. I need more time before I can get it together lol
