After reading your Friendship Drabbles, I have a question for you; Which of our Hogwarts friends that we’ve rarely seen paired up or even never paired up before do you think would be really cool to see interact with each other?

Ooh, now that's an interesting thought! Hmm...well, one I liked including in those drabbles was Murphy McNully, Badeea Ali, Tulip Karasu, and Rowan Khanna as members of a Wizards' Chess Club! I liked the Chess sidequest Jam City wrote for the first three, and it just seemed so logical for Rowan to be among their ranks too. Rowan and McNully in particular I feel would find a lot of common ground, especially since they'd be in the same house.

Speaking of Rowan, I also really like the idea of Rowan and Ismelda Murk getting on better in years 5 and 6, especially if Rowan is sorted as Slytherin the way mine is! I feel like after MC helps Ismelda with her crush on Barnaby, Ismelda would open herself up a bit more to accepting help from other people in her year regardless of how different they are from her, and considering that Rowan and Ismelda are both so interested in History of Magic, I could totally see them striking up a (whispered) conversation or two over an essay in the library or something. One of my heacanons that admittedly flies in the face of the game is the idea that it's Ismelda who ultimately takes over teaching her class History of Magic in Rowan's stead after their death in year 6, and in my personal version of the Circle of Khanna, Ismelda actually joined the organization not just because Merula invited her to, but actively out of wanting justice for Rowan.

I also think Chiara Lobosca and Nymphadora Tonks would have developed a very close bond over time, both before and after school. Not only are their dormmates who quite frankly could learn a lot from each other, but I love the idea that half the reason Tonks is so blase and accepting about her future partner Remus Lupin being a werewolf is because she met and fully accepted Chiara first. I also really like the idea that Chiara was the one who put Tonks in contact with Lupin and the Order of the Phoenix in the very beginnings of the Second Wizarding War.

Speaking of dormmates, Charlie Weasley and Ben Copper were good friends at school, you can rip that idea out of my cold, dead hands. In my headcanon, I actually imagine Charlie -- in true Weasley fashion -- becoming a bit protective of Ben after Merula targeted him so openly in their first year for his ancestry. When Ben went through his radical transformation in year 6 and hexed Charlie, the two ended up in a full-on physical fight, though they mended fences when they helped co-found the Circle of Khanna.

Ravenclaw dormies Talbott Winger and Andre Egwu, on the other hand? I'm sorry, these two were always trading sassy barbed comments with each other, I don't make the rules. ("You aren't seriously thinking of going out to Hogsmeade in those, are you?" "I'm not the one strutting about in purple and white-striped pants." "They're lavender-and-white slacks. And they are fashionable, compared to -- whatever hokey American ridiculousness you've got strapped to your feet." "I'm surprised the supposed 'King of Fashion' doesn't know what cowboy boots are.")

Finally I love the idea of Chiara connecting really well with Talbott! I wrote Carewyn befriending these two back-to-back in her fourth year due to how well their side-quest plot lines synced up (and honestly, their introductory TLSQ's were among the best in the entire game, IMO) and I just love the thought that these two "Lone Wolves" in MC's year could find some fun common ground despite their shared tendency to ward people away from them.

Another person that ends up close friends with Chiara in my headcanon is Jae Kim, though there's a bit more Jam-City-canon ammunition behind this. The game also included the ideas that Talbott was friends with Penny before MC and Talbott and Badeea connected through the Circle of Khanna, and I like the thought that Talbott kept in contact with both of them well after Hogwarts too. Even Merula and Tulip's game-canon fractured friendship, which I don't imagine healed that well at school, I personally like imagining improved after Tonks's death, when Merula and Tulip both took comfort from each other at her and Lupin's funeral.

HPHM Cardverse AU: Friends Aren’t Faraway

Hey everyone! So I got a small stimulus of inspiration today for Cardverse! Why not flesh out Cato’s friendships with a few of the leading members of the other kingdoms? Two years ago I wrote three fics detailing three of his friendships with the canon OCs, Talbott, Chiara and Badeea. While Cato can regularly interact with his friends at Hogwarts in the canon universe, it’s different for Cardverse.

The characters are all in different kingdoms, but physical distance cannot crush true friendships! For this post I’ll be focusing on canon HPHM characters, so only Spades and Hearts will be covered. Cato and Penny’s ship will be in another post. I’d love to work on friendships with other people’s OCs - all of you guys are always welcome to send me asks and DMs to discuss ideas!

Cardverse AU was originally created by @ariparri, who also is the creator of Veruca McQuaid. With all that said, here’s our feature presentation.

Representing the Land of Clubs, the Ace of Clubs, Cato Reese, often interacts with the officials of other kingdoms. He takes part in meetings where the four kingdoms join to conference on issues that affect all the states. Letters and telephone calls are also used by him to reach his friends in other kingdoms. As a high-ranking Clubs official, he also has the ability ride the train to anywhere in Cinderhaven, with first class accommodations.

It is important to note that he was appointed to the position of Ace of Clubs by King Orion Amari in the early stages of a crisis in the Country of Spades. He couldn’t reach anyone in Spades because Rakepick’s regime had cut all communications and transport. During that period of time, the only way he’d be able to meet and interact with the Ace and Jack of the kingdom was during conferences.

Queen Veruca elected to only send her representatives Bill Weasley and Rowan Khanna to them. She was very devoted to her commitments and responsibilities to the citizens of Spades. They depended on her to keep their efforts to take back and rebuild their country organized and morale high. As a result, Cato only heard her in mentions, but he held a lot of respect for her and her ways of handling the crisis.

Clubs and Spades were in an alliance during the war, in which Cato would lead a surprise attack against Rakepick’s army. He got along well with both Bill and Rowan. With the Ace of Spades, he’d go over strategy, tactics and the innards of the enemy. He and Rowan would discuss the impacts of Rakepick’s actions on Spades and the steps needed to rebuild. While the commander of the Clubs’ military, Cato also had a duty in overseeing law enforcement there. These two circumstances were among the reasons that contributed to him taking the diplomatic and political implications of the matter seriously.

Outside of their duties, Cato, Bill and Rowan also exchanged details about their lives in their respective kingdoms and their hopes for the future. They continued to maintain contact after the war. With the situations in the kingdoms stabilizing, they would have the time to meet up more often.

Cato also had strong relations with Barnaby Lee and Chiara Lobasca, the Ace and Jack of Hearts, respectively. The two Aces were similar in their styles of leadership. When not at conferences, they at many times would look to each other for inspiration and advice, both in writing and over the phone. Cato also revered the times he’d get a letter or a call from Chiara. She concerned for his well-being and how the situation with Rakepick’s regime was treating him. The Jack also appreciated his ways of balancing his loyalty and accountability to his people with the interests of the other kingdoms.

King Diego of Hearts was impressed when he first heard that young Cato had become Ace of Clubs. He was excited and anticipated his future progress holding the position. The King was thrilled when he was able to meet up with Cato after his appointment to Ace of Clubs. They enjoyed each other’s company, and his attitude helped Cato’s confidence in his new duties. Diego would catch onto his ability to keep calm and reassure his people in spite of the uncertain and unpredictable nature of the Spades crisis.

He noted that the Ace of Clubs had the values of Hearts, using his intelligence and knowledge for the benefit of the citizens. While he was sure that Cato would also be just as good in the Kingdom of Hearts, Diego understood that his true place lied with King Orion in Cubs. Nevertheless, Cato was always welcome in Diego’s court, even receiving invitations from him, Chiara and Barnaby from time to time.

Your previous ask made me wonder if it would be allowed for me to write a fic or other content to explore how Cato interacts with and gets along with the Ace, Kings, Queens and Jacks of other countries who are canon HPHM characters, like Chiara? I know Cardverse is very open but the separation of characters by kingdom makes me want to make sure first. I understand for those that are OCs belonging to other people, that depends on if their creators are available and how they handle it.

You definitely don’t need to ask me to make content on Cato and his interactions for the other characters in the AU. With OCs yeah you might have to ask the creators first before making something with their characters. Better safe than sorry.

I can tell you about Veruca though. As a place holder monarch, she only interacts with others if she absolutely has to. Otherwise, she would let the Ace and Jack handle it since she’s more focused on helping her people. She even sends them in her place for meetings with the other monarchs because she refuses to let her people rebuild on their own.

About me

☁️ I’ve been gaining more followers in the past few weeks so I thought I’d follow the trend and post an about me. Yes, it’s probably super lame, but I think it’s always nice to know a bit more about the person who writes fics and drabbles you might enjoy. ☁️

My name is Chiara (she/her), but @negans-lucille-tblr gave me the nickname Chi, you’re more than welcome to call me that. I’m a historian, specializing in the early modern period.

@deathofpeaceofmind is my best friend, and co-creator, she’s involved in my writing process and the creator of my headers. I love her and I’m so (probably too) obsessed with her. We plan on moving in together and we’ll probably open up a tattoo shop in a few years (hopefully). We have a Spotify podcast together called „Tracksuit Rob“ make sure to give it a listen - we chat about Twilight, cringy fanfics and all things reading/writing.

If you’ve been following me for a while you’re probably aware of my obsession with the band Kaleo (I got to meet JJ in December ‘21 via Zoom and in person in October '22, probably the coolest thing that has happened to me in a while), I’ve got a tattoo dedicated to one of their songs, and thanks to them I got to explore my love for a beautiful country called Iceland. Hopefully, by next year, I’ll be able to move to Iceland to finish my studies over there.

The forest king aka Hozier owns my heart. I interviewed him in December '23 and I’ll never recover from that experience.

A quick look at my masterlist will tell you all about the fandoms I support, though I’ve got my focus on priest fics (the religious trauma is real). I mostly write very filthy smut, mixed with darker themes, so, my Tumblr is strictly 18+, to keep you and also myself safe. Negan, Kylo Ren and Dean Winchester are characters I always find myself going back to, expect to see them popping up every now and then.

The only talent I have is being able to recite every LOTR scene - and yes, I’m very proud of that.

We go by the rule “don’t like it - don’t read it” if you don’t like something just think about skipping the imagine before you send some hate my way (hate I’ll gladly turn into a very happy, sarcastic message). I have the biggest priest kink - don't be surprised to see quite a few priest fics around here. And yet, as a fun fact, I’m asexual.

One of my closest friends just described me as an aggressive philosopher - but I promise you, I’m a very friendly human being, even though I’m an Aquarius (I know nothing about the star signs) who’d sort herself into Slytherin (Tom Riddle I’m coming for you). I adore writing fan fiction and I love seeing you guys interact with my stories - so please, keep on reblogging, leave comments and like my stuff.

The Base History of my oc: Viola Pizzelle

Soooo…. I've been debating on making this for a while now but this character has been enough of a presence on my Instagram and AO3 account that I feel like I need to sort of make a proper explanation as to who this character is, and who knows, maybe I'll turn it into some sort of series where I explain in somewhat decent detail about my ocs and their history.

So, Viola Pizzelle. They are an oc/self insert-ish character I created back in 2020, when I became really into Jojo part 5, started having weird stomach issues, and needed comfort during a global pandemic. She was just a silly little character I threw into a one shot I wrote in a notebook and showed to my friend after I had sketched her out on a piece of paper. There are a couple of early sketches lying around and if I ever find them, I will show them to you but the main elements were she was pretty much the most basic looking of the cast to show how out of place she was and she had bandages around her neck from a mysterious incident because ooooh drama. Her Stand's name was King of the clouds despite its ability having nothing to do with clouds or the sky or atmosphere whatsoever. I just thought it was a cool name. She was mainly there to satisfy my need for human interaction and my crush on Giorno Giovanna (fueled by the writings of @mrsgiovanna ).

Eventually I started to come up with actual ideas for actual stories for her which eventually resulted in her becoming a full fledged character and a spot in my dumb little Everyone lives/nobody dies au. And other aus because I've been going through a rough time and need to project but also because I'm an idiot nerd.

Her actual background (backstory)

Viola Chiara Pizzelle, born March 30th in a small, gang torn town by the name of Lonesome Town (because I'm just that good at naming shit.) to Vittorio and Pearla Pizzelle. She's the youngest of 5 siblings, actually being considered the runt due to her lack of impressive physical strength and just average intelligence and average everything else compared to her siblings. She was kept from school often to help her mother with her stolen Botox filler operation and when she did go to school, she had trouble keeping up. Many around their small town knew of this, but with people dropping dead left and right from said gang violence, she became the least of anyone's concerns.

She was bullied by most of her siblings for being the runt, earning the name 'runty' from her eldest sister. Her mother's constant criticism and negativity towards her didn't help. Her father was often absent and oblivious to all of it. Her friends were the only ones who put effort into getting her help, but once again, no one bothered with them.

Her anime origin story kicks in one night after she finally decides to stand up to her mother and tell her she wants to go to school full time. Her mother attacked her. She ran out of the house, just barely escaping her grasp before making it to the end of the street and collapsing by a lamppost.

She was sent to a hospital in Napoli where she was treated for her injuries (of origin they were unaware of) and a subsequent 'mysterious infection' (which wasn't an infection at all. It was a stand.) She spent 4 months in the hospital before being informed that her family could no longer pay for her stay and recovery. Around her final days there, she met a man by the name of Bruno Buccellati. He was there looking for a man who used to stay in the room she was taking residency in but stumbled upon her instead. He heard her story, invited her out to lunch where she realized this motherfucker was a gang member, ran away, nearly passed out from exhaustion, and then was offered a place to stay.

She would stay with Buccellati and his companions as Buccellati would pay for any medical expenses until she decides to go back home or until she is better. And thus is the beginning of the adventures of Viola Pizzelle.

Changes and facts:

Her Stand's name was changed. Formerly King Of The Clouds, their new name is Literary Nonsense, or L.N. as she calls them. Their ability is control over ink. She can turn them into solid objects and weapons (which is an interest that leads her into…an interesting career.) It grows and develops overtime, I'm just working out the details.

She is genderfluid bisexual. They go by Viola, Vala, Valerio, and Vincenzo depending on the set of pronouns they use.

As of the start of their story, Viola is 16 and the story takes place a couple of months after the events of Vento Aureo.

Their last name is a food reference. Pizzelles are traditional Italian waffle cookies made from flour, eggs, sugar, butter or vegetable oil, and flavoring.

She is the only one in her immediate family that has light colored hair.

She is a born Stand user. In her family, it skips a generation, so her father doesn't have it.

So that's it so far. A lot of this can be subject to change. A lot of things could be different than what it was before, yada yada yada.

Of Chirps and Snakes

Author’s note: This happens in an AU.

In this Universe (Ollie’s) Catherine is an only child and very different from her original universe.

For: @ryollie (Ness thank you for being a good friend and sharing the same exciting about letting these two become friends. Love ya, and I hope you enjoy this!)

Catherine Stark saw Ollie Potter for the time on Platform 9¾. She didn’t mean to stare, perhaps it was his hair, similar to hers, that made her fixate on his fathers biding him goodbye with proud smiles on her faces.

Catherine wondered if they also had high expectations for Ollie.

When she was sorted into Slytherin, Catherine’s invisibility began.

She decided to take matters into her own hands and have self vengeance on her betrayal by shunning away from her housemates, making herself crave for friendship would be enough punishment by disappointing and scaring her family full of Hufflepuffs. Her parents showed their last pang of love by making her promise to never befriend a sneaky Slytherin—that perhaps, that could help their daughter to avoid wickedness.

Catherine was cunning on her own. And keen, as well.

By the time she reached her third year, friendless and face sunken with a permanent frown, Catherine managed to become an Animagi by herself.

One a rare optimistic thought, Catherine surprised herself when she was able to properly make the potion—she didn’t have anyone to talk to, to distract her during classes. And keeping a Mandrake leaf under her tongue for a month was relatively easy.

When no one talked with you.

She wondered if it was worth it. Who was she trying to impress?

But then again, watching the students mingle together on the courtyard as she stood on a small branch of a low tree brought a peaceful feeling to the sparrowhawk that no one suspected was a third-year witch.

She’s been doing this for three weeks.

And Catherin saw Ollie Potter for the second time when he looked up at her, smiling softly. She watched him try to beckon her to come closer, but Catherine didn’t move from the branch. She didn’t dare to.

“Ollie! What are you doing, we’re gonna be late for potions and you know how Snape gets!” Laurent King was one of Ollie’s closest friends.

Ollie had a lot of friends.

He was Jacob’s brother. Harry Potter’s son. A Curse-Breaker.

Catherine knew about Ollie, but she didn’t know him.

Well, she now knew that he probably liked birds.

But Catherine didn’t dwell much on it, or at least she tried.

The Potter boy returned the next day, prepared with bird seeds this time.

Olli smiled gently at the bird—he didn't know it was a sparrowhawk, it looked like a hawk but... smaller. And with feminine features. But what made Ollie stare, in awe and wonder, was this bird's bright, golden eyes that looked back at him. Curiously and wary, as if it was hesitant but longing at the same time.

What is he thinking?

He made a sound, beckoning her. And Catherine decided to humour him, because why not? After all, there was a first time for everything. And her parents didn’t know about her abilities so what harm would this bring upon her?

When she flew and landed on his extended arm, Catherine was started at how brightly he beamed at her—surprised that she actually trusted him.

For three more months, Catherine’s home became Ollie’s shoulders whenever he visited that branch. He never failed, always after lunch and after their last class before he retreated to his Common Room with Laurent King or any of his many close friends—it always amazed Catherine how much everyone wanted to befriend Ollie.

They never interacted as classmates or housemates.

Catherine held no reputation as Ollie Potter did—she was invisible.

Her only company was Gizmo, her loyal and calming Niffler.

Tired of being left in the dark, Catherine decided to try and approach Ollie as herself. She planned to ask him a random question during Potions, but first, she needed to try and get paired with him.

That never happened. Rowan Khanna and Laurent quickly approached Ollie and Catherine was left with Merula Snyde and Barnaby Lee.

Her second attempt was to sit next to him during lunch—which proved to be impossible when she noticed Ollie and his circle of friends sitting together at one table. She sat on her usual table, alone and without appetite.

Maybe it was the damn birdseed.

Her third and final attempt was the one she had succeeded—in the worst way possible.

Ironically, she hadn’t even been trying to approach him, it just happened. Catherine was walking towards Charms, looking at the ground as she dragged her feet towards her favourite class. Then she collided with him. And their parchments and books fell on the stone floor, each belongings blending in together in a senseless mess before the two quickly got on their knees and tried to retrieve what was theirs as fast as possible.

Then Catherine grabbed a piece of paper that was not hers—it was a sketch of a bird and not any bird, that was her.

Ollie quickly snatched it from her hands with a neutral expression—and the two made eye contact for the first time.

She panicked when he stared too long, his emerald eyes flashing with slow recognition.

Stay away from Slytherins Stay away from Slytherins Stay away—

Catherine panicked at her mother’s voice, echoing sharply inside her head as if she had been caught, as if her mother was right behind her, ready to punish her disobedient child.

Ollie opened his mouth to speak.

Catherine ran.

She ran to where home was for her, so it wasn’t a surprise when she found herself hugging the tree where the small branch was, where she had the perfect spot to watch students creating memories for themselves, making friends and bonding with the ones they had—Catherine couldn’t even approach students of other houses.

Her parents had scared her so much.

She was still punishing herself.

No friends allowed you dirty snake. You don’t deserve it. Penny Haywood asked if you wanted to be Potions partner—you ignore her. Merula Snyde asked your name once, you turned your back. Barnaby Lee complimented your hair, and you scowled at him. Laurent King laughed when you rolled your eyes at Snape, you pretended you didn’t notice. Chiara Lobosca smiled at you—you looked away.

Ollie Potter was about to talk to you, something you planned for. And you ran.

You’re not a Hufflepuff, you ruined everything for everyone.

Catherine felt like she belonged nowhere in this school.

With all the panicking, she remained human and hid her face on the tree’s bark—as if it was shielding her from the steps approaching from behind.

Ollie had followed her.

Catherine didn’t dare to turn around, she was too embarrassed and scared to see him. Did he realize it? Was he going to be upset? Was Ollie going to think she was tricking him?

“I can’t believe you ate all those seeds… I could’ve brought you a sandwich.”

That statement shook Catherine to the core—he sounded calm, his tone was even gentle. Just like it always has been when she slept on his fluffy hair as if it was her nest and when she stood on his shoulder, hearing him talk to her as he tried feeding her those nasty bird seeds.

She turned to look at him and his smile widened, he was beaming.

“You really are something… three months and you never thought about introducing yourself as… well, yourself?”

His tone wasn’t accusatory, or snarky—Ollie was amused. Stunned even. It was like he couldn’t believe the situation.

Catherine felt as if she could cry. He was speaking to her, and she didn’t feel like ignoring someone’s attempt of approaching her this time.

She was tired.

Lonely.

Invisible.

No. Not anymore.

Ollie Potter was staring at her. Extending his arms.

Do you want to befriend this Slytherin?

Don’t befriend any Slytherins!

Catherine smiled back, finally, and took his hand—tearing up as she awkwardly shook it.

I am a Slytherin!

Winter was just about everyone’s favorite time of year, in the Kingdom of Hearts. Not only did people look forward to taking time off work and school so as to spend more time at home with their loved ones, but the yearly Passion Ball was an event all of the Kingdom’s citizens greatly looked forward too. The same could be said for Diego Caplan and -- to everyone’s surprise -- Carewyn Cromwell. Although she was from the Country of Spades, the exchange student who had recently become Queen Rosalie’s newest “favorite” had been in very high spirits, as wintertime approached. Her classmates were taken aback by how frequently they’d hear her sing through the halls -- even when she’d walk to the train station to meet Chiara Lobosca on her way to the capitol, she’d be singing like a songbird happily flying south.

“Good King Wenceslas looked out on the Feast of Stephen, When the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even; Brightly shone the moon that night, though the frost was cruel, When a poor man came in sight, gathering winter fuel...”

Diego was just as surprised as anyone by Carewyn’s mood, but pleasantly so.

“Why, our dear Miss Cromwell has always been so serious, since she’s come here,” he would tell people amiably. “I for one am glad she’s found a reason to smile -- beautiful ladies are all the more beautiful, when they’re happy. And they sound all the more lovely, as well!”

But however happy Carewyn sounded as she sang those first few weeks of winter, her singing came to a very abrupt halt the day of the Passion Ball. It was so sudden that just about everyone noticed -- including Diego. And Carewyn’s silence, combined with her abrupt absences from Music class over the next three days, prompted some concern out of him.

When Diego followed up with his professors and classmates about the matter, he didn’t gather much -- merely that no one had seen or heard from Carewyn since the day of the Ball. And yet just about everyone agreed that she had not attended the Ball, nor had intended to go to it in the first place. One rumor even flitted around that Queen Rosalie herself had requested Carewyn’s presence there, but she’d actually declined that invitation.

“But then, I suppose she has always acted like she’s better than everyone else,” one particularly haughty classmate said scornfully. “To think she’d feel the same way about our very Queen!”

Diego strongly doubted this. Carewyn certainly kept to herself a lot, and yes, her perfectionism and stubbornness was so over-the-top it was almost comical...but she’d actually always come across to Diego as quite modest on those few occasions they were able to interact. She rarely got up to dance in Music class like many of the others, but her singing was always precise, warm, and full of emotion -- and yet, just as when he’d first met her, she seemed incapable of accepting any sincere compliments for her talent. She instead always seemed much more comfortable encouraging other’s work and advocating for others than promoting her own skills. It almost made Diego wonder if, somewhere deep down, the brave, intelligent, stoic, proud, passionate exchange student from Spades was actually a bit socially awkward.

Whatever had made Carewyn go quiet couldn’t have been social awkwardness, though. Something had to be wrong -- and once Diego followed up with Carewyn’s only known friends at the university, Barnaby Lee and Chiara Lobosca, he got a much better idea about why.

Diego had known that Carewyn had emigrated from the Country of Spades to attend university in the Kingdom of Hearts -- everyone knew that. What he hadn’t really thought to piece together until then was what her family dynamic was like. Some might immediately assume that Carewyn leaving home to attend school could mean that she wasn’t close to her family, or perhaps that she even wanted to get away from them for whatever reason. But that couldn’t be further from the truth -- according to Barnaby, Carewyn spoke very frequently and affectionately about her brother Jacob and mother Lane, and according to Chiara, both of them were set to join Carewyn in the Kingdom of Hearts as soon as it was feasible to do so. Chiara even mentioned that the reason Carewyn had turned down the Queen’s invitation to the Passion Ball was because her mother Lane was set to arrive by train that very day, and Carewyn wanted to spend the entire day at home with her.

This detail in particular troubled Diego greatly, and he wasn’t the only one: Chiara was too.

“I went to check on her, but when I knocked on her door, there was no answer,” she said, her soft voice shaking with anxiety. “Barnaby’s said he’s seen her open her door, and she ate some of the food I’ve left, so I know she’s there, but...whenever I try to talk to her, she won’t answer.”

Diego’s eyes grew a little darker and grimmer.

“Don’t worry,” he assured Chiara. “I’ll get to the bottom of this. You and Barnaby just keep an eye on her in the meantime.”

So Diego, while visiting his family back home, took some time out of his own holidays to ask around about the state of affairs across the border in the Country of Spades. Unfortunately it seemed information was suddenly very scarce. From what Diego could gather, the Ace of Spades -- Patricia Rakepick -- had been leading things ever since the previous King, Coby McQuaid, had been killed by person or persons unknown. It also seemed that the Jack of Spades had also recently been assassinated, and that in response, Rakepick had disposed of formalities and officially taken on the mantle of Queen of Spades. One of her first acts as Queen had been to shut down all transport in or out of the Country of Spades, for the sake of “national security.”

Was this what Carewyn was so upset about? Diego wondered. The fact that her mother and brother were now trapped back in Spades and wouldn’t be able to join her in Hearts? He had to admit, it made some sense: he knew he himself would be heartbroken if he were ever separated from his parents and siblings. Certainly Carewyn was much more of a loner than he was...but Diego had to think that Carewyn’s joy earlier that winter could only have been in response to the thought of being reunited with her mother -- and so this sudden, unsettling silence could only be grief in response to that dream being dashed.

At one point Diego discussed the matter with his father, after he’d noticed how oddly distracted his son was during dinner that night.

“I admit, I do not know her that well...and I don’t think she would consider us friends -- she seems to think anything nice I say to her is completely insincere, for some reason,” Diego said moodily. “But, well...she seems to be kind, despite her eccentricities. It just seems sad that she’s condemned herself to be alone in this time meant to be shared with friends and family.”

Mr. Caplan’s expression softened. “It is indeed sad...but perhaps understandable, under the circumstances.”

He patted his third-oldest child on the shoulder.

“Say, I know -- why don’t you bring some of our family’s wine back for her, as a gift? Perhaps enjoying a glass or two with a friend might raise her spirits.”

Diego frowned.

“Mm, probably not...it’s a lovely idea, of course,” he added quickly, “but...well, Carewyn Cromwell isn’t much one for socializing -- she’s never been to any parties at school. She didn’t even attend the Passion Ball.”

Mr. Caplan raised his eyebrows in surprise. “Really? My, your friend must be a shy one. Well, then, why don’t you go through some shops at some point tomorrow, then? Maybe there’s something there she’ll like better.”

So Diego went into town the following day with his grandmother to look through the capitol’s many shops, all indulging in post-Passion Ball sales. At one point Diego ended up inside a store that was selling a line of diamond and emerald jewelry made by the infamous Diamond Empire Cromwells. Diego’s grandmother asked him if "his friend” was related to them, and he had to confess he didn’t know.

I sincerely hope not! Diego couldn’t help but think to himself, recalling the rather unpleasant blond-haired jeweler he’d encountered while traveling with his father on a business trip to Diamonds. Mr. Caplan had once said that the founding member of the Cromwell Clan Jewelers was a man he was very glad he didn’t have to do business with.

Ironically enough, though, it was in this store that sold Cromwell Clan gems that Diego eventually found his gift for Carewyn. The shopkeeper was very enthusiastic about the gift, when Diego brought it up to the sales counter.

“Oh, wonderful choice, Mr. Caplan,” she said, beaming. “I just bought a whole stock of those from the Diamond Empire -- they’re very popular there, you know. I actually intend to bring a set of these along to the King later today, so that he might pick one for the Queen’s birthday...”

Her brown eyes sparkled.

“May I presume this gift is for a similarly special lady?”

“No -- well, yes, she is special, but not in that way,” Diego explained. “She’s simply going through a difficult time -- she’s having to spend the holidays alone without her family this year.”

The shopkeeper frowned. “I see...well, I’m sure she’ll appreciate the gesture! Here -- why don’t I box this up for you? It’d more secure than a simple shopping bag.”

The shopkeeper put it in a rather elegant white box with a fancy red velvet ribbon. Diego’s grandmother commented that they could wrap it in something more colorful when they got home, but Diego ultimately decided to leave the box as it was.

“Miss Cromwell has never thought I mean it, when I give her compliments,” he told his grandmother. “And well, I’m not trying to woo her or anything -- I just want her to know that she’s not alone -- that things will get better. Perhaps if I keep this gift simple, she’ll better sense my sincerity.”

When Diego returned to the university, he went up to Carewyn’s dormroom. He gave it a knock, but even though Diego could hear some movement inside the room, Carewyn didn’t come to the door, no more than she had for Chiara.

“Carewyn?” he called. “It’s me, Diego Caplan.”

There was no response.

“You don’t have to come to the door,” he said quickly. “I merely...wanted to drop this off for you. It’s just a small gift, in honor of the holidays -- my grandmother and I picked it out for you, in the capitol.”

He swallowed.

“...Chiara told me about your mother,” he said a little more softly. “How she was supposed to join you here, in time for the Passion Ball. It’s tragic that you’ve had to be without her -- without her and your brother. I love my family very dearly, and I can’t imagine how lonely a holiday without them would be. How lonely any time off from school would be, without them. You must miss your family terribly, and I’m certain they must miss you just as much.”

He paused, considering his next words carefully.

“I realize that I’ve...come across as insincere to you, in the past...but I’m deeply sorry, Carewyn. I mean it. And I hope you know that you don’t have to deal with your sadness alone. I’m sure Barnaby Lee and Chiara Lobosca would agree. And I sincerely hope things will get better for you and your family.”

He smiled slightly.

“Barnaby told me that you speak very highly of your brother and his intelligence . I hope I might have the chance to meet him sometime!”

There was a silence. Diego looked down at the package in his hands, and then bent down to put it on the floor in front of Carewyn’s door.

“I’ll just leave this for you here,” he said. “Hope to see you in class very soon.”

With this, he left.

Carewyn didn’t fetch the gift until nearly a hour later, and she immediately retreated back into her room, not letting anyone see her. She was really in no state to be seen -- she hadn’t bathed or brushed her hair in quite a while. She’d barely even eaten, outside of what Chiara had left for her. But in the darkened recesses of her room, she held Diego’s gift, her fingers toying absently with the velvet ribbon on the box for a long while. Then, finally, she opened it.

It was a small, but ornate silver jewelry box. Inlaid in the top was an enamel plate printed with a swan, which when opened revealed an intricately crafted bird automaton, which flapped its wings as it twittered cheerfully.

The card enclosed said:

For Miss Cromwell;

I thought you could use something to keep your earrings in. May this bird keep you company when the Bluebird of Happiness eludes you.

Diego did not see Carewyn the following day, when classes resumed. By the end of the week, however, she had -- Diego found her in the Music classroom sitting at the piano, before everyone else had arrived. In her ginger ponytail, Diego noticed a rather familiar red velvet ribbon.

“I'm always chasing rainbows, Waiting to find a little bluebird in vain...”

Diego didn’t think he’d be smiling so fully, hearing Carewyn sing again. Yes, perhaps the song was sad, but the warmth and strength of her voice was comforting, all the same. He lingered in the door frame, watching her for a moment -- then, after a moment of thought, he actually answered her with a song of his own.

“Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, There's a land that I heard of once in a lullaby...”

Carewyn looked up through the glass of the classroom window, finding Diego’s reflection. He gave her a small smile as he sang a bit louder,

“Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, And the dreams that you dare to dream Really do come true.”

Although Carewyn bowed her head, in the glass, Diego could see her red lips upturned in a very small, emotional smile. And for the next line, Diego was very pleased when she joined him, her soft, warm voice resting on top of his much louder, but less trained tone like a cashmere blanket.

“Someday I'll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds are far behind me, Where troubles melt like lemon drops, Away above the chimney tops -- That's where you'll find me!

Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly... Birds fly over the rainbow -- Why then, oh, why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow...why, oh, why can’t I?”

Diego had made it next to the piano, resting his hand on the piano as he stood next to Carewyn on the bench. Carewyn looked up at him at last, though her gaze rested somewhere on his shoulder rather than his face.

“Thank you,” she said very softly.

“For the gift, you mean?” asked Diego.

“For the gift -- and for caring. I hardly deserve it, and -- ”

“I would say you deserve it,” Diego said with a frown. “Everyone deserves to be happy.”

Carewyn shook her head. “I haven’t done anything to deserve such kindness from you. But I’m grateful, all the same.”

She paused.

“...I’m sorry if I offended you, before,” she said after a moment. “When I said your praise was insincere.”

Diego smiled sheepishly. “Well, yes, my pride was wounded a little -- but it’s all right! Such verbal slings and arrows are minor wounds -- it’s nothing Diego Caplan can’t handle!”

Carewyn bit her lip to try to hold in some amusement at Diego’s overconfidence.

“I suppose it just seemed like you couldn’t have known I was worthy of your praise,” she explained. “You didn’t even know me.”

Diego laughed. “Not for lack of trying! With how few chances you take to socialize or go to parties, sometimes I wonder if I will ever know you!”

“There are ways to get to know people that don’t involve dancing and small talk,” Carewyn shot back very coolly.

“I suppose so,” chuckled Diego, “but we only really share this one class together, where we can really interact at all.”

His expression grew a little more serious.

“...I don’t suppose you’ve heard any news from your mother and brother?”

Carewyn bowed her head.

“...No,” she said quietly.

She paused. Then, after a moment, she explained,

“The night of the Passion Ball, I received a note from Jacob. It looked several days old, and it was in poor condition...but he said that Mum’s work visa to Hearts was abruptly rescinded, supposedly due to the threat her departure posed to national security.”

Diego was startled. “What kind of threat?”

“The trumped-up kind,” Carewyn spat. “Mum works in a museum as an archivist and historian -- the only ‘concern’ she could prompt in the likes of someone like Rakepick is that she won’t follow the party line. Not to mention her relation to Jacob, and by extension our Jack of Spades, Duncan Ashe.”

“The one who was assassinated recently?” surmised Diego.

Carewyn’s eyes darkened as she nodded.

“I haven’t received anything else from Mum or Jacob,” she said lowly. “But I know Rakepick’s trying to keep them trapped there in Spades. I even received a letter yesterday requesting my presence at a hearing on behalf of my brother, back in Spades.”

“A hearing?” said Diego, looking confused. “But isn’t that good news? That would give you the ability to return home -- to see your brother -- ”

“And get trapped right along with him, for my efforts,” Carewyn said coldly. “Jacob even told me as much, in his letters. He warned me multiple times not to return -- if I did, Rakepick would never let me leave again.”

She crossed her arms and closed her eyes.

“I can’t help Jacob or Mum get out, if I’m also stuck on the inside,” she said lowly. “I might hate not knowing where they are...but I can’t do anything, if I’m just as much of a pawn in Rakepick’s game as they are.”

Diego’s lips came together in a straight line as his eyes drifted down to the piano.

“To feel so helpless, in the face of your family’s suffering,” he said lowly. “I can only imagine how much strength and restraint must be required to withstand it.”

He smiled at Carewyn.

“Don’t worry,” he reassured her. “As long as you’re here in Hearts, the Kingdom is your protectorate -- and I can’t imagine the King and Queen wouldn’t want to help, if they heard of your family’s plight. I’m sure you’ll think of some way to reach them.”

Carewyn looked up at Diego, her eyes softer than before.

“Thank you, Diego,” she said, clearly touched.

And from that day on, Diego felt no hesitation in introducing Carewyn Cromwell to people as his friend.

Meanwhile, back in the capitol of Hearts, a shopkeeper had come to deliver a second bird-themed jewelry box to the King of Hearts. King Declan was right in the middle of a discussion with the dean of the university of Hearts when he arrived.

“ -- can testify to the boy’s excellent character,” said the dean, his blue eyes sparkling over his half-moon spectacles. “I think you’ll be very pleased with him, if you and the Queen choose to attend the end-of-term showcase.”

“Perhaps,” said the King. “But however popular Mr. Caplan might be with his peers, there’s more to the role than just being well-liked...”

When he noticed the shopkeeper, his expression loosened significantly.

“Ah, Madam Rosmerta -- good of you to come. One moment, please, Professor Dumbledore.”

“But of course,” Dumbledore said with a polite nod.

Rosmerta laid out her selection of bird boxes for King Declan to look over. He was very impressed by their craftsmanship.

“You aren’t the first one to take a fancy to them, your Majesty,” Rosmerta said amiably. “The elder Ms. Caplan and her grandson also quite enjoyed them...”

“By grandson, do you mean Diego?” said Dumbledore. He glanced at the King significantly.

“Oh yes, he’s just started university, hasn’t he? Ms. Caplan mentioned that,” Rosmerta said amiably. “Yes, she stopped in with him the other day -- he bought one of these very same boxes himself, as a gift for a friend.”

King Declan raised his eyebrows, interested. “Really?”

“Yes -- such a charming young man...apparently this friend didn’t have anyone to spend the holidays with. I asked him if this lady friend was someone special to him -- he said she wasn’t, but that she was a special person, all the same.” She beamed. “Such a sweet thing to say...”

“Yes...” said Declan thoughtfully.

His eyes ran pensively over the bird box in his hand before he glanced over at the dean, whose blue eyes were twinkling again. Then the King of Hearts himself looked back down at the box with a smile.

“...You said Mr. Caplan will be at the student showcase, this upcoming spring?”

“Most assuredly,” said Dumbledore with a dewy smile.

“Perhaps Rosalie and I shall attend, then,” said King Declan. “I should like to meet him, if time permits.”

Dumbledore inclined his head in something of an abridged bow as he rose from his chair. “We would be honored to have you.”

Hated his father for everything he was, but never showed it. Unlike Aleksia, he knew how to hide his hatred and play it smart.

He vowed one day he would be strong enough to get both Aleksia and him out.

When he went to Hogwarts, he befriended Duncan and Olivia Greene. He became obsessed with the Vaults.

When Duncan was eventually killed, he nearly lost it. He couldn’t believe one of his best friends died because of him.

Rakepick used his need for power and want to be strong enough to help his sister to manipulate him into continuing with the Vaults until his disappearance.

She saw how Jacob was treated better than Aleksia, but thought she couldn’t do anything about it and would make it worse. She tried to teach Aleksia to just do what her father wanted and things would be alright. Aleksia was too head-strong for that.

Eventually left with Aleksia to Scotland after Jacob went missing.

She became very strict when it came to everything and they have a strained relationship still. Aleksia is still learning to trust her.

Background/History

Aleksia was born in England on December 10th, 1972 to parents William and Leanna. She grew up with her father, mother and brother Jacob, however, her fathers family was a big part of her life. From the time she was little she was seen as weak, not just because she was the youngest, but because she wasn’t like the rest of her family. Her entire family consists of Slytherins, with the exception of a couple of Ravenclaws. She is the only Gryffindor in the family, to which the whole family was shamed by. Her cousin Henry in particular hated Aleksia, and would often beat on her, which was allowed by the adults and seen as him playing and venting out his frustrations. Jacob was the only one who was on her side, but not all the time. She was often punished by her father and put outside, not being let in until morning. That is when she met Revena Sevier and Merric Nyx, who also were kids living on the streets. They all became very close, and would take care of each other. Revena and Merric were eventually adopted by a music shop owner, who would let Aleksia stay with them when she was put outside.

Aleksia and her mother eventually moved after Jacob’s disappearance, and moved to Scotland. William still had a hold of them financially, and still had a hold of them, but less. Aleksia’s mother became very controlling and protective after this, which made them butt heads alot. Aleksia didn’t completely trust her mother, since she often went with her fathers will and didn’t fight back. Even years after she was learning to trust her. Aleksia’s father would sometimes try to visit Hogwarts to leave notes and things for her to manipulate her or would try to see her.

When she went to Hogwarts and looking into the Vaults, she found that it gave her purpose. She found alot of great friends, and learned to truly trust people. She and Merula definitely had a problem with each other right away. Merula reminded Aleksia of her cousin Henry, and immediately had her guard up. They eventually get a mutual civility by sixth year. Not friendship, but civil relationship.

Henry went to Hogwarts for the first couple of years before being transferred to Durmstrang to learn more. During the years he was there, whenever they saw each other, he would try to jinx her and hurt her. She eventually had enough and attacked him, leaving him to go into the hospital wing.

It was after the ice vaults, that she started to develop her ice affinity, and began exploring her family background. From then on she often could be found studying ice glyphs and conjuring. By the time she was 18 years old, she was able to conjure an ice guardian for a short while, and by the time the war came, she was even stronger.She could conjure it and make return it whenever she wanted.

One time during her sixth year, she was forced to go to visit her father, and there he tried to tell her that she was going to have to get married right after Hogwarts. He had set up an arranged marriage. He blackmailed her, saying that he would make her life hell and that she needed to continue the family purity. When she returned to Hogwarts she isolated herself for days until she finally emerged from her room depressed and hopeless. Her friends came to her rescue and cheered her up.

Personality

Extroverted: Aleksia is very personable and enjoys being around people. She is able to charm most people with her upbeat personality. Of course this doesn’t mean that she doesn’t like her alone time. She loves it. However, if she is isolated for too long she gets depressed.

Stubborn and Hot Headed: Oh boy this girl is STUBBORN. She will not back down for most things. If she wants to make a point, she will stick with it and find evidence that it is true just to show she is correct. However, if someone shows her real evidence to the contrary, she will back down. She has gotten into fights before, but not for no reason. If someone messes with her or her friends she will get in their face. She has head butted Merula before for bullying Ben.

Reckless: She can be quite reckless and put herself into harm's way without thinking. She often pushes herself past her limits and is often needed to be reminded that she needs to take care of herself. Despite her being reckless, she is not reckless when it comes to others, only herself.

Hard working: She is an exemplary student and very intelligent. She excels in most classes and always seeking to learn new things. If she wasn’t in Gryffindor she most likely would’ve been placed in Ravenclaw.

Caring: She cares too much at times. She is so selfless that she always is looking after others and making sure they are looking after themselves. She will always help others in need no matter what. She even helped Ismelda with her crush despite the fact that Ismelda has been shitty to her, and despite the fact that Aleksia was in love with Barnaby.

For Aleksia’s 15th birthday, Barnaby purchases a plush wolf for her, which she absolutely treasures and cuddles with.

Aries family females have the ability to produce ice glyphs and if powerful enough ,can summon an ice guardian. Aleksia is the second one in the family that can conjure a guardian.

Barnaby and Aleksia wait until they are 24 to get married. Their wedding is sweet with close friends.

When death eaters were freed, Barnaby and Aleksia moved around quite a bit, knowing that Barnaby’s parents would look for him.

Aleksia’s cousin, Henry, joined the death eaters soon after.

Aleksia and Barnaby were separated after a death eater attack. Aleksia was found by Henry and he used the Cruciatus curse on her. He left her for dead bloodied and broken. She was found by Penny and Rowan, who Barnaby had contacted after the attack.

They end up having 3 children with Barnaby, Kieran and Kaia and youngest Faye.
