@moonbeammuses liked THIS POST for a christmas-themed starter!
Tumblr media
He supposed if he was the societal version of a better man, he would have actually paid money for the gift he had gotten for Amanda, but he had no interest in being a better man by society, only by the people he ran with, and he wasn’t about to be bothered by the concept of laws. All that to say, he had “relieved” a record store a few cities back of some vinyl records of Amanda’s favourite artists for Christmas, and he figured now - the van parked, a bonfire lit, alcohol currently being consumed - was as good a time as any.
Martin managed to catch Amanda’s arm and gently tugged, leading her away from the others to stand just off to the side of the van. Sue him for wanting it to be a quiet moment. He carefull took the wrapped package from the passenger seat where he had stashed it and flashed her a grin as he handed it to her. “Hey. Merry Christmas, drummer girl.”

ooh, speaking of my friend todd, my good friend todd. todd brotzman for the character ask game perhaps?
YES OF COURSE TODD!
How I feel about this character: BASTARD BOYFRIEND PATHETIC MEOW MEOW. dumber than he looks (honorific). i will rub the scruff on his face and give him a kis on his forehead and i will Also tell him to shut the fuck up <3
All the people I ship romantically with this character: dirk dirk a thousand times dirk is this even a question. even though their little moments in s2 were dorky and kinda sweet, farah is on just a completely higher level than him. meanwhile dirk and todd are simultaneously "naive sunshine and cynical grump" AND "insane people in a manic energy feedback loop" and that combination is incredibly important to me
My non-romantic OTP for this character: him and tina should have hung out some more i think. no other coherent thoughts but i am right
My unpopular opinion about this character: aw man idk what opinions are popular or not bc i haven't been active in fandom for so long... maybe it's bc i'm in a #mood but him lying and stealing all his parents' money was kind of iconic of him honestly (like not the repercussions of that affecting amanda later but . fuck yeah drain those savings dsflkhgjfgl)
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: if we'd gotten a s3 i was really interested to see what they would do with his pararibulitis. like is he just gonna stay continuously medicated?? will some new plot/character elements affect/interact with his hallucinations just like the Rowdy 3 were able to externalize amanda's?? in my brain's foggy dream version of s3 the aliens they would deal with would have something happen. also mexican funeral is there

Amanda's parents may be unorthodox, but they are very paternal.
She isn't sure how to feel when she gets an invite from them, asking her to come over for dinner. Amanda hasn't seen her parents in nearly a year, since before she met The Rowdy Three, and who was to say how they would react to the type of person she'd grown into? She throws the invitation aside in a panic, and for a few days, it lay forgotten.
That was until of course the Rowdies asked her about the strange, crumpled letter they'd found in the van.
It really doesn't matter, she said to them. She wouldn't know how to explain herself to her parents anyway, much less the Rowdies. She couldn't just introduce them as who they really were, even though she loved them all to death. All four of them shook their head, encouraging her to go, to keep in touch with them, as long as they weren't toxic. They reassured her that they would be on their best behavior, and after an hour of convincing, she caved.
So she goes to dinner, the four men at her heels.
And her parents love it.
Mr. And Mrs. Brotzman had always been the odd parents out, letting their kids have free reign of their style, hair, choices, and just about anything else. When Amanda wanted to get her first piercing at 15, Mrs. Brotzman has suggested that she get one that stood out, that made a statement. When Todd expressed interest in starting a band during his high school years, his dad told him how to mix the music just right to create the perfect atmosphere for a mosh pit. Mr. And Mrs. Brotzman loved their kids.
It was obvious from the beginning that Amanda was comfortable around the four men, and that trust in their daughter's eyes was good enough for them. They welcomed them inside, making sure they shook off their coats at the door to rid themselves of the rain. Put your coats here, Mr. Brotzman said. It's the perfect place to dry leather without the material starting to peel. And make sure to wipe your shoes on the mat, because everyone knows that the last thing we want is for someone to slip and fall while having fun. The older couple exchanges a few looks at first, but upon seeing the way that the men treated Amanda, simply shrugged.
Mrs. Brotzman had known quote a few anarchists in her lifetime, and had even dated a few. She remembered one, a fine girl who called herself Jett, who reminded her a lot of these men. All four of them seemed crude at first, rough around the edges; but they treated Amanda as their own, and it was clear that they considered her family. Sure, maybe Amanda would never truly reveal where she'd been for the last year, but Mrs. Brotzman knew that if she had been with these men, then she had been in good, safe hands.
They laugh at the way the youngest of the men seemed to follow Amanda around, calling her "Boss" and responding with enthusiasm to anything she did before the others even had the chance to register what she was attempting. Then there was the long haired one, who seemed to have an endless amount of ways to make Amanda laugh, and had a strange circular tattoo on his right eye. One of them, wearing a beanie, had approached the couple with a simple question. He just had to know if the coats tucked away in their closer were real leather, because the fabric had aged beautifully. And them there was the strange one, the quiet one. The one with white hair who seemed almost paternal towards not only Amanda, but the rest of the group. Mr. and Mrs. Brotzman had no doubt that he would keep their daughter safe.
Amanda had been holding her breath all night, and as the minutes passed, she slowly started to relax. The Rowdies had stayed true to their word, and had only broken one lamp, which was completely by accident. Her parents seemed to love them, and they seemed to love her parents.
Everything was perfect.
Everything, perhaps, except for one strange, reoccurring thing that happened throughout the day. Amanda couldn't wrap her head around it, but everytime her parents interacted with her boys, each and every Rowdy got a strange expression on their faces. They melted for a moment, and she thought that, perhaps, they looked like normal men, interacting with their own parents. Amanda had never asked about their biological familial ties. It just seemed rude.
Buy watching the way Gripps reached down to pick up whatever her mom dropped, or the way Cross jumped up to help her with the dishes, made her heart ache with something she couldn't quite place. Her dad had lured Vogel and Martin over to his photo collection, showing them all of the places he'd been in his younger days. Vogel stared at the pictures with wide eyes, and oddly enough, Martin's southern accent had gotten ten times worse. He was even being polite.
Amanda wasn't sure what she liked better. The fact that the her boys seemed to find comfort in her home environment, so foreign to them, or the fact that her parents had accepted them into the family wholeheartedly.
Maybe she'd even convince them to dress themselves in their finest jackets for a photo.

PROMPT: In 1x08, Amanda tells Todd: "Dirk says you hate him now", how did that conversation go? Love your stories, btw! I think you capture the characters really well
yes! I love amanda & dirk interactions!amanda is dirk’s biggest fangirl, fight me. I’m also happy to try my hand at the blood-loss!dirk…
& thank you so much for the kind words! my biggest concern is to get the characters right, so that means a lot! xx
this is a shorter one!
also note: this is a bit harsher towards todd than I’ve written before, but this is almost immediately after amanda learned about his lie, so it’s a fresh wound & she was very harsh towards todd right afterwards.
~
While The Rowdy 3 were busy high-fiving each other over and over, Amanda took a moment to look around. She was still buzzing with the adrenaline of the whole debacle. They just totally kicked ass! Amanda hadn’t felt this powerful and free in ages. She loved the feeling. When two gurneys being carried out of the house caught her eye, her feeling of relief was replaced by worry. Someone had gotten hurt. Well, lots of people had gotten hurt, but these people were carried out of the house. Followed by that detective, who was motioning with his arms while explaining something to the paramedics.Amanda’s heart skipped a beat. Her thoughts immediately went to Todd.Amanda hurried towards the ambulance where the paramedics were already loading the gurneys on.“Hey! Excuse me!” Amanda yelled. As she reached the ambulance, the detective stepped aside to make a call.“We have to go, get these guys to the hospital.” The paramedic replied. “Are you hurt?” He asked.“No, I’m a-okay.” Amanda replied absently as she looked over the gurneys. Surely enough, the two gurneys were occupied by her brother and Dirk Gently.“Are- are they okay?” She asked, her voice coming out weaker than she would’ve liked. The paramedic looked at her questioningly. “You know them?” He asked.Amanda swallowed and pointed at Todd. “He’s my brother.”The paramedic nodded sympathetically. “He got electrocuted pretty bad, but from the looks of it he’s going to be fine. He’s just out of it for the moment. Should be up and at it in no time.” He said.Amanda let out a breath of relief. She found herself once again getting angry at Todd now that she knew he was going to be okay.“And him?” She asked and pointed at Dirk.“He got shot with a harpoon.” The paramedic replied.“Twice.” Came a pained voice from the gurney.“Dirk?” Amanda asked and stepped into the back of the ambulance to get closer to the gurney.Once she came into his view, Dirk tried his best to give Amanda a reassuring smile. “Hello, Amanda.”“Oh my God, Dirk.” Amanda said as she saw his bloody shirt. “What the hell happened?”“Harpoon. Two arrows. In one shoulder! Lots of blood outside of body.” Dirk mumbled.Amanda cringed. “Jesus.” She breathed.“No. No help from him whatsoever.” Dirk groaned.“Well, that’s a pretty punk story you get to tell your friends later on, huh?” She tried to make the situation a tad lighter. Then her eyes widened and she turned to the paramedic. “He is gonna be fine, right?”“He’s lost a lot of blood, which is never good, but he’s made it this far, so he should pull through.” The paramedic replied.“No.” Dirk said.“What?” Amanda turned back to Dirk. “Dirk, I’m sure you’re gonna be fine.” She assured.“No. No friends.” Dirk replied.“What?” Amanda repeated.“Can’t tell punk story. No friends. No friends for Dirk.” Dirk mumbled.“What do you mean? Todd’s your friend, right?” Amanda said.“No. Todd hates Dirk. Dirk messed up. Dirk talks about himself in third person.” Dirk said and frowned at the end of his sentence.“Why? What happened?” Amanda asked, her eyebrows raising in question.“Dirk met Todd and Dirk. Lied. Not really. Todd says so. Todd hates Dirk. Hate hate hate.” Dirk mumbled.Amanda’s expression turned to sadness. She didn’t know exactly what had happened, but it looked like Todd turned his back on Dirk, which is what it felt like he’d done to her as well.“It’s gonna be okay, Dirk.” She said and placed her hand on Dirk’s arm, which made Dirk groan out in pain. “Shit, sorry, man.” She said.“No bad. Fine good.” Dirk replied.Amanda smiled. “Right.”“We really gotta get him to the hospital.” The paramedic interrupted the moment.Amanda nodded. “Right. Yeah. You do that.” She said and then turned to Dirk again. “Feel better Dirk. And hey… If Todd’s really stupid enough to dump you, I’ll still be your friend. Okay?” She said.Dirk smiled. “‘Manda’s nice. Nice, scary girl.” He replied. “All blood out.” He added and sighed.Amanda stifled a laugh. “Yeah, I know. Hang in there Dirk.” She said and stepped out of the ambulance.“Bye bye Brotzmans.” Dirk mumbled after her.Amanda couldn’t help but feel like the plural of her last name wasn’t because of the blood-loss.“See you around, Gently.” She replied, hoping that the confused detective got her meaning, that this wasn’t the last time she planned on seeing him. While she turned away, she could hear Todd coming to in the ambulance. She sighed. He would no doubt resist going to the hospital, meaning she would have to deal with him.As she walked back to the Rowdies, she made a mental note to have a talk with her brother, just so that she could giver her a piece of her mind when it came to Dirk Gently. Her brother might be an asshole, but Dirk Gently seemed fond of him and Amanda liked Dirk. Dirk deserved better. So she was damn well going to make sure her brother didn’t crush Dirk’s heart like he’d done hers.Well, to do that, and to make a dramatic exit.

if you have any fic ideas, send me prompts! I’d be happy to write them. my inbox is always open. xx

My piece on media representation of autism, social anxiety, and other disorders
Or one reason I highly dislike Big Bang Theory and love Dirk Gently
The Big Bang Theory is a sitcom, short for “situation comedy”. Possibly its biggest feature is the personalities and mental disorders of its four arguably main characters. This means, in short, that it is a comedy about mental disorders, autism and anxiety amongst others.
Now, I do not personally have any issues with the idea of sitcoms or shows that want to explore mental disorders. However, I do have an issue when these things are brought together in one show to make something that draws its humour from mocking the struggles of people with autism and anxiety.
Let’s take Sheldon for starters. Whilst it is never explicitly stated, his unempathetic behaviour, high intelligence and lack of understanding of speech patterns such as sarcasm all heavily indicate, in my opinion, that he is very much autistic. We are occasionally given some reason to sympathise with his, but for the most part he is just presented as an uncaring, self-absorbed jerk, as well as overly fussy, needy and dramatic. All of this belies and belittles the actual issues autistic people experience, making it seems like social interaction problems they have are just negative aspects to their personalities.
Leonard, Howard and Raj all seem to have some form of anxiety, and although they may all act differently because of it it’s still there. It renders them unable to interact “normally” with most other people, and is a constant source of tension and distress for them. Whilst this in itself is not necessarily a bad portrayal of these things, it’s presented with the attitude that “they're funny because they're awkward nerds who are academically smart but socially stupid".
Sheldon also probably has some form of OCD, but his intense dislike of change is just presented as him being fussy, whiny and selfish, and is almost never (as far as I can remember) explored from his perspective.
While The Big Bang Theory’s portrayals of mental disorders are not always inaccurate, they are almost always presented exclusively as the show’s laughing stock, its vehicle for comedy, rather that being properly explored and handled, belittling them and people with them and making it seem like the mentally disabled are just something to be laughed at, reinforcing the problem of bullying experienced by the show’s main characters.
Oh, and as a little side note, as someone somewhat on the autistic spectrum although not severely, and with a degree on social anxiety, having to watch this show because the rest of your family enjoys it is tremendously awkward and mentally painful.
Deep breaths
Now that that’s out of the way, let me tell you why Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency does mental disorders right.
Firstly, the titular character. Dirk is probably somewhere on the autistic spectrum, as well as having some form of anxiety and clear issues with his mental image of himself. He is shown to be socially inept due both to his disorders and being socially starved for a very long time, but this is not used exclusively as a reason for the viewer to laugh at him. His inability to empathise with other properly and say the right thing in many situations is not only accurate to many people with the same kind of disorders, it is correctly shown to be painful for not only those he considers friends, but for him too. He wants and tries to understand, but just can’t quite understand what other people are thinking sometimes.
Another great thing is that not only is he made likeable (or even loveable), making it easier for viewers to empathise with his troubles and want things to go better for him, but when he finally finds friends and people who stick around with him and give him the basic friendship he fo badly needs, he begins to make genuine improvements. He is given proper character development with respect to his disorders. All this makes him alone an excellent demonstration of how to properly portray certain mental disorders in television.
Dirk is not the only person who struggles with mental disorders. Amanda Brotzman has an often debilitating neurological disorder (pararibulitis), but this does not make her any less of a character. She has many of her own strengths, even at the start of the show when she is arguably at her weakest. And then, with the right help, she takes massive steps in her confidence and independence, even to the point where she ends up leading the otherwise all-male band of psychically vampiric anarchists with a penchant for black leather.
And then we have Farah Black, a deeply insecure security guard who sees herself as inadequate, no matter what she does. She starts off rejecting the part of her she sees as weird and inadequate, but even this only drives her to be stronger, faster, and better at what she does, even though she can already tactically outthink almost anyone and best all but the most skilled of opponents in both a gunfight and hand-to-hand combat. And then, again with help from her friends, she begins to accept the parts of herself that she had rejected and suppressed, and realise that she is not in fact a failure, and this helps to make her both a happier and stronger person.
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency does mental disorders well because it does not just treat them as some comic element or a failure or personality pitfall on the part of the characters. It treats them as a serious issue and properly explores how people struggle with their mental issues, as well as showing how friendship, support and understanding are really important and helpful elements in the path to improving the life and condition of people with mental disorders.
I know I didn’t talk about everything encompassed by the issues of mental disorders in both shows, but hey, I’m a forgetful human and this post was getting really long as it is. Thanks for reading if you made it the whole way to the end!

Afternoon-after thoughts on Little Guy, Black Hair
I didn’t do one of these last week, partly because of the discourse, partly because my life was hectic, but this week, I’m ready. I watched the ep twice last night, slept on it (until noon), and I have assembled my thoughts as follows:
1) Looks like Moloch has always rocked that luscious, long hair, and I’m... hair for it. I’ll see myself out.
2) Priest tells Ken he has a dirty mind, and Friedkin throws himself at him in a hug. Are all the baddies this season lusting after Ken? If Mage and Suzie meet him, are they going to have a wand battle for his honor?
3) Tina fucking broke me this ep, and Izzie slayed it so hard. The poor, heightened girl stimming with a rubber band ball? I died. “Farah, where’s Hobbs?” I died. Her speeches about how she and Hobbs are best friends and this job was just supposed to be a joke, and then about how she needs Bob to find the words? Tattoo some stars on my face and bury me, because I DIED.
4) Dirk looked like a gorgeous fantasy prince for the entire episode, and I was so glad to see him huddled under those leaves for warmth, finally sleeping. Like, yeah, I know he got some sleep after the police station orgy, but still. He’s got a lot of not-sleeping to make up for, and this was a relief to see. Also, did I mention he looked like a gorgeous fantasy prince for the entire episode?
5) I am still celebrating so hard over all the Brotzman interactions. Give me those refreshing, realistic conversations. Give me everything not immediately being perfect between them. Give me bitch slaps and giggles and sibling bird-flipping. This is the content we’ve all been waiting for.
6) “Todd, your normal life is over.” Todd, I’m not sure if you knew this, but your normal life ended the second your boss told you to check out the penthouse. There are no words for what your life is now.
7) When Dirk doesn’t know what to do: “Quick! A new snazzy outfit!” This boy self-medicates with fashion, and if that ain’t gay culture...
8) Dirk’s facility with accents is... something. He’s basically a fusion restaurant in a man’s body. One that apparently serves English pub fare, Irish stew, Tex-Mex, and... whatever pirates eat. Also, did he take Intro to Spanish, or...?
9) Speaking of pirates, the music in this episode was perfect. The Pirates of the Caribbean-esque soundtrack, which I’m sure Max fought to the death for, those musical stings every time Todd and Amanda bitch-slapped each other, angsty Mr. Sandman, the reprise of the Patrick Spring explanation music from 1x07? Pure gold.
10) Some notable Todd lines: “You know what’s really crazy?” *SLAP* “Well, okay, but I swallowed it, so...” And his “Yeah, actually,” when Amanda asks him about Farah. I mean, I do not ship it in the slightest, but that delivery was adorable af. Bless you, Elijah Wood. Bless you.
11) I had a lot of theories about the context of “little guy, black hair”, but I would never have guessed it was Vogel describing Amanda. And I love it.
12) When Bob started to say quarry, I damn near shat myself because I thought he was saying “corpse”. Please be alive at the quarry, Hobbs.
13) The entire “battle” scene gave me so much life. All the reunion smiles between Dirk, Todd and Amanda. “I knew you’d show up.” “You did?” Another much-needed hug. The duel of the shit-with-swordsmen. Literally everyone beckoning for Beast to jump in the truck, and then waving the fuck goodbye to all the Dengdamors. “Wegah fenz!” Yes, sweetie, you most certainly do.
14) Also, is Dirk physically incapable of being friendly to people who want to hurt him, as long as they know who he is?
Gordon Rimmer: “You!” Dirk: “Me! It is.”
Weedle: “You must be Dirk Gently.” Dirk: “It’s me.”
Silas: “Are you Dirk Gently?” Dirk: “Hi.”
15) Is... is Dirk’s shoulder okay? I feel like his shoulder situation was glossed over. That one shoulder is probably going to be a gnarled stump by the time this show is over.
16) Dirk’s explanation. That completely extra stance. Him somehow walking all the way around the group without anyone noticing. Amanda not knowing there was a new case, because obviously she wouldn’t. The return of “Done! Did it! Did it!” Dirk screaming Todd’s name excitedly. Everyone being happy and fulfilled and laughing until GODDAMN IT SUZIE WHY COULDN’T YOU HAVE WAITED LIKE ONE MINUTE?! AND MAGE, YOU’RE NO BETTER.
Bonus: “I can’t believe I’m able to follow this.” Same, dude.

@hockenberry sent 💋 for ship smooches and the first one is Amanda + Martin because I’m obsessed
Tumblr media
Magical powers and all that didn’t mean Amanda had been cured - there had been some discussion, curiosity about whether or not the negative aspects of the pararibulitis would go away. The old lady hadn’t known, so it became a waiting game.
A waiting game with an unfortunate end. The others were asleep; three sleeping bags that were completely ignored as the three were just piled on top one another in a tangle of limbs and quiet snoring. Martin had been dozing off in his chair, in front of a campfire that had faded to a small flicker and the glow of embers.
The familiar sounds of panic alerted him and he moved quickly to find Amanda, just as she climbed out of the van. And, as always, Martin grasped her gently by the arms to still her, allowing his power to draw in the energy causing the episode. The action filled his own body with a surge of energy, but without the negative effects.
She was shaking. Martin moved his hands so that he could brush her hair out of her face, thumb wiping away a few stray tears. “You’re alright. You’re safe. There’s nothin’ wrong, not out here, and not with you. Promise.”
The kiss, well. That was entirely unintentional, but an action borne of adrenaline and instinct. It lasted only a few gentle moments before he pulled back, realising he might have made it worse. He stayed quiet, searching her face for any sign of what she might be thinking. As long as he was calmer, that was all he realy wanted.

Additional Tags: not currently finished, I'm just posting this to test the waters and see how it's recieved, now onto tags regarding the actual story, Misfits AU, young offenders, everyone is like a rebellious twenty-something version of themselves, I had way to much fun writing Dirk for this, he's such an asshole, I love him, I have very much neglected Farah in this first part, so if you're looking for her, come back a little later, because she will be here, okay so now onto the low-key more serious stuff, there's not a lot of it, but I do feel compelled to mention that this story will get very dark, and involve heavy subjects, such as abuse of power over others, nonconsensual sexual interactions, and murder further down the line, so please stay safe and proceed with caution

Scrolling through my dash and Neal Caffery came up so my brain went well, guess you’re having White Collar AU thoughts now.
I’m imagining a world where Dirk Gently is a criminal informant for FBI Special Agent Farah, who successfully tested into the FBI on her first try and ended up as head of the Seattle White Collar Division at the ripe young age of thirty. She’s got a string of arrests under her belt and her team both respect and fear her with equal intensity, her superiors keep making vague noises about moving her up the chain of command but she’s very much okay staying where she is, thank you but no thank you, she’s here to make a difference and that’s what she intends to do. She wasn’t heavily involved in the case that put Dirk behind bars four years ago (it was mainly a CIA affair, he’d steadfastly maintained his innocence right through the trial and sentencing until the very last minute, she remembers his face when the judge pronounced him guilty and it still haunts her sometimes) but she’s familiar enough with the details that the authorities feel comfortable calling her when Dirk goes missing from his jail cell with only three months left to serve on his sentence.
She ends up finding him in the woods, fifty miles from the supermax prison where he was being held. He’s vaguely confused about why she’s there but he’s adamant that it was just a misunderstanding, he opened the wrong door and got lost in the woods, he ended up where he needed to be despite the fact that it really wasn’t where he intended to go.
“Dirk, it took you an entire day to walk here”.
“There’s a barricade along the road Farah, I honestly didn’t even notice that I’d left the prison”.
So she goes to take him back to his cell (she calls her boss on speakerphone to update him, Dirk uses it as an opportunity to ask weird and personal questions until Farah threatens to put him in the boot of the car) but then Dirk’s yelling that they need to pull over, they need to pull over right that very second. Farah does, and they end up stumbling over a box containing the very evidence that the FBI needed to close a particular case that has been stumping Farah for months.
Dirk mutters something about having a hunch, that’s all, and suddenly Farah is inspired. He doesn’t deserve another four years in a cold lonely cell, he’s a lot paler and thinner than last time she saw him, and he looks bloody awful in his orange jumpsuit (she can’t work out why no-one called the authorities about a dude in prison garb wandering down a major Washington State highway, she’d think that the universe wanted him to escape only that would be ridiculous).
He’s not a huge fan of the ankle monitor but he’ll take what he can get.
For the first couple of months their interactions are generally Farah asking “how could you possibly know this detail about this crime we’re solving, why do you have connections to the city’s biggest crime syndicate, why do you own all these missing goods?“ and Dirk avoiding all questions with "I have the right to remain silent” (and occasionally “please can I go back to my cell now, there was less murder there”). The CIA keep trying to headhunt him and Farah joked about it once until she saw that he’d gone white as a sheet (she makes a note to look into it later, but they’re snowed under with cases and she never quite finds the time).
Farah’s team end up doing a bit of work with the local Missing Persons unit, she keeps trying to Estevez for the FBI but Estevez just wants to find missing people. It turns into a running joke every time they see each other. Farah surreptitiously pins FBI badges on Estevez’s jacket while he’s not wearing it. Estevez refusing to bring her coffee in the morning because the FBI has a budget double that of Missing Persons, she can buy her own damn coffee if she needs caffeine that much. Zimmerfield used to do The Eyebrows™ on rare occasions but it turns into a weekly occurence once they start working with Dirk on cases.
The Rowdy 3 are a vigilante gang that aren’t even under Farah’s jurisdiction (she does white collar cases, not these-dudes-trashed-a-laundromat-that-ended-up-being-a-front-for-literal-Nazis cases) but they somehow keep getting away, and even manage to acquire another member in the shape of a tiny brunette in a too-big leather jacket (Farah’s traitorous mind keeps going to call her adorable, she’s not adorable, Farah is a Special Agent and Special Agents do not use words like adorable to describe violent anarchist ex-drummer punks). But she does her research and then she realizes.
Brotzman.
Amanda’s last name is Brotzman.
Farah’s heard the name before and it worries at her for ages until she works out where exactly she’d heard it. It was during Dirk’s trial four years ago, something about a guy that Dirk had been supposedly working with (Todd? Tim? Ted?) who they’d thought might have been involved in the case until Dirk turned around at the last minute and said that the whole thing was him, absolutely just him, no involvement from anyone else, how dare they even suggest it. Dirk’s complete about-face had seemed weird at the time but Farah hadn’t questioned it, it wouldn’t be the first time that a suspect cracked under the pressure of a high-intensity high-profile trial. Now she thinks that it might have been motivated by a desire to protect someone else (it would be a quintessentially Dirk thing to do and Farah’s heart aches for him).
Eventually she ends up discovering that Dirk was set up by the CIA. A special branch (she discovers it’s name, Blackwing, but not what it was set up to do) had requested (dictated commanded forced) Dirk’s involvement with some pretty shady activities and Dirk had complied, not realizing the extent of what he was being asked to do. When he eventually tried to escape, the CIA pinned the whole thing on him and left him to rot in a supermax prison cell until Dirk somehow had a hunch that they were going after Todd.
And Farah is pissed.
