Just to clear up any confusion about canon on Hawaii Five-0, I will list the facts here:

Steve's eyes are blue hazel. (Alex calls them "hazelly blue.")

Steve's parents are John and Doris.

Danny's parents are Eddie and Clara. His siblings are Matt, Stella (Eric's mother), and Bridgett.

In April 1992 (Steve was 16 and Mary was 10), Doris faked her death.

John told Mary and Steve that she was killed by a drunk driver.

Steve doesn't find out that his mother's "death" was actually murder until 1x11. Mary doesn't find out until somewhere between 1x11 and 1x13. She finds the pictures of the car bomb in 1x11, and in 1x13, we find out she was kidnapped because she had started asking questions about their mom's death.

After Doris' "death," Mary was sent to live with their Aunt Deb. Steve was sent to the Army and Navy Academy (ANA) in Carlsbad, California. Joe White (aka "Uncle Joe") helped get Steve into the school.

After graduating from ANA, Steve went to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, for 4 years.

After graduating from Annapolis, Steve was with Naval Intelligence for 5 years, and then he joined the SEALs for 6 years.

It is implied a few times throughout the series that Steve was a sniper.

When Steve came back to Hawaii after his father's murder, he transferred to the Reserves.

Steve is fluent in Mandarin and Hawaiian, and he can speak conversational Korean and Japanese. He understands Pashto, but he says he is rusty.

STEVE IS NOT STUPID. He is actually very smart. Plus, he was in Naval Intelligence. Intelligence is in the name.

Kono has met John McGarrett before.

Even after Chin was accused of being a dirty cop by IA, John McGarrett stayed his friend.

Both of Kono's parents are still alive, but her mom had an aneurysm, so she can't walk or talk.

Sexuality Headcanon: High libido pansexual. This has a lot to do with the McGarrett family dynamic that happens. Mary is the baby and she was young when Doris "died". John being a product of that time really wasn't the best dad in a lot of ways but at least with Steve...he was a man. With Mary? Her puberty probably scared him the most and any talks if there were any probably had the opposite effect he wanted. The McGarretts are...emotionally guarded...even among themselves. They wanted to be strong for each other but that built walls even within the home. When Mary needed attention, as any child would and does, she didn't get any...unless she was acting out. How would she then get her dads and her big brother's attention? Wrong crowds and stuff and add it with the typical teenage hormones...I feel she explored that. With a variety of colorful characters. She was lonely and even if the relationships weren't strong enough to last before being sent away she searched for them because she wasn't getting the attention she wanted at home. Gender Headcanon: She/They. She grew up in a masculine dominated house hold. I think she was a tomboy that kept up with Steve and his friends well enough...and as she got older she also embraced her femininity but sometimes struggled with feeling womanly enough. In those moments they/them fits and carries her.

A ship I have with said character: Through talks and chats with @cowandcalf I see her with Kawika. It's really just based on the talks we've had. A BROTP I have with said character: Obviously I adore episodes with her and Steve. Getting an insight to their dynamic and how they rebonded after the gap and despite always being siblings becoming friends again. I do think she and Eric would have a fun friendship and they just hang out and get wasted sharing McGarrett and Williams family secrets.

A NOTP I have with said character: I really don't have one but that's really just because of how limited time we see her. A random headcanon: She sent Steve care packages while he was deployed. Maybe they didn't talk as much and he mostly went to see her physically when he needed to bail her out but I feel like they were trauma bonded enough that even if it's just a jar of Steve's favorite peanut butter or snack he'd share with her on those stressful nights as kids when their dad was out for a case and should have been home but wasn't and they were both silently worried about being orphans and he tried to cheer her up by sharing with her his favorite snack he'd been waiting to eat. Was their relationship strained? Sure, but I hate thinking of them as strangers so I like to believe he sent her post cards from every place he was deployed and she sent him care packages that reminded him he wasn't alone. General Opinion over said character: I think she's really fun. I wish we'd had more of her. Even if she couldn't be on screen, Steve mentioning any updates Mary would send him about Joanie and herself would have been so great...she did have the 'little sister' vibe amped up to 11 so as an older sibling myself could see the 'annoying' part but it's for the plot so...I wish we had a lot more of her. One of my favorite bit of McDanno fanart is Mary leaving a copy of the gay Kamasutra as a present to Steve because she's tired of him fussing about and not being with Danny already.

“What’s got you typing away over there?” Mary Ann asked her big brother.

Steve turned his laptop further away from her and said, “Nothing. Mind your own business.”

With a laugh, Mary Ann said, “What, are you sexting or something? I was just curious.”

Frowning at her, Steve insisted, “I’m not,” looking down at Joan sitting on the floor, Steve lowered his voice, “sexting.” In a normal tone, he told her, “There’s this car forum on here, and I was asking some questions about dad’s old Marquis.”

“Okay, that doesn’t explain the face.” She gave him a pointed look.

“What face?” Steve asked, still making the face. 

“You have a face.”

Groaning in frustration, Steve pointed at the screen and said, “There’s this one guy and he’s saying stuff that’s wrong!”

Mary Ann closed her eyes and took a calming breath. “A lot of people on the internet are wrong, Steve. What is it about this one?”

“He KEEPS ARGUING BACK!”

Needing to know what this argument was about, Mary Ann grabbed the computer and saw that Steve hadn’t been arguing with this guy via car forum. They’d been arguing via DM.

“Oh, my god, you like him!” Mary Ann cried, cackling when Steve ripped the computer out of her hands.

“I do not!” Steve insisted, closing the laptop. “He’s just wrong, and I have to tell him how wrong he is.”

“When’s the wedding?”

“Never,” Steve said, stomping up the stairs and slamming his bedroom door. 

Looking up from where she was coloring on the floor, Joan asked, “Mommy? Why is Uncle Steve so mad?”

“Sometimes, sweetie, grown ups are dumb,” she replied, smiling at her daughter. She leaned in and whispered, “Uncle Steve, especially.”

Joan grinned and went back to her art. Mary Ann snickered to herself and opened the shopping app on her phone. She put “The Joy of Gay Sex” into her shopping cart and hit the “check out now” button. Steve might just kill her when she gave it to him, but oh, the look on his face would be worth it.

Things I’ve learnt while binge watching Hawaii Five 0 during lockdown...part 4

17.  Until this COVID19 enforced Hawaii Five-0 binge watching, I had only vaguely known Alex O'Loughlin as Holly Valance’s boyfriend

Forgive me - but I didn’t really make the link between this fairly standard shaggy haired Aussie male circa the early 2000′s....

With this guy....weird, right?  Amazing what a decent haircut will do.

Also - unlike say a Hemsworth, Bana or Crowe - his American accent is pretty decent.

18. The gag reels are to DIE For.

As with any great love affair/obsessive compulsive behaviour the research spiral is long and deep...this is my favourite combo of gag reels simply because it’s McDanno centric and for the ‘what’s the line, what’s the line, WHAT’S the line’ at 1:22, the commentary on the seatbelts at 2:45 and ‘Is there anybody out there? We’re going from the top yeah’ at 3:33.  Yeah, welcome to the rabbit hole.

19. The show is 7 kinds of problematic - but I can’t stop watching it.

ASIDE:  My mother watches this show - and now, thanks to COVID19, I’ve turned into my mother.  

How problematic is this show? So many dumb plots...

I have to defuse this nuclear device to save the world - babe, strap a car battery to my chest for protection.

A freakin Soviet submarine rocked up in HNL bay and only I can solve the crime and save international relations.

I solved the unsolvable case from 1941 in a dream - and I was my grandfather????

I rescued my Smol and friends by picking up the whole house with my helo.

But then, so many good episodes, that covered some important themes...

Sex trafficking

So many stoopid characters...

The follicly challenged recurring Sang Min - stoopid but enjoyable

Kono leaves but this guy gets to see Season 10???? WTF Hirsch???

These two - WHHHHHY???  So unnecessary and so poorly handled.

This guy - ugh - JOE “I know all the secrets AND I’m not telling you for your own safety but I will say enough that you end up not trusting me and then I will tell you everything and die in your arms because your whole freakin life hasn’t been traumatic enough!’ WHITE. Ugh - the worst!!

And then not enough of these awesome characters....

Can I have a whole show about Mary & Joan and how they come back to Hawaii and live with Uncle Steve and turn his life upside down?

I kinda need the whole Navy dad and Nahele storyline like I need air to breathe - amiright? 

If we are having Mary & Joan then we need Bridget as well - and I love Missy Peregrym!  Are all Danno’s siblings taller than him?

Steve should have got an Eddie in Season one!

So there was a concept that started forever ago in an rp. My partner in that thread went on hiatus but I loved the concept so I turned it into a fic. It’s...complicated. To say the least. 

It’s a Hawaii 5-0/Three River’s crossover. Steve and Andy are twins that were separated at birth. Years later, Steve’s son ends up in Andy’s ER and secrets are revealed and so many questions raised. But now Andy, who had a goal and desire to be a father one day, was now in custody of a child who by genetic reasoning was his. Wanting to give the child time to recover from being in foster care and the streets they don’t rush into alerting the McGarrett’s...Thre River plot points later force Andy to bring Steve’s son to Hawaii. 

Steve’s struggling to adjust as fatherhood is thrust onto him along with so many new insane family secrets, a twin, and an uncle that could only be classified as evil. 

My intention is that this is pre-McDanno with Steve forcing Danny into his life because he needs help being a dad. And Danny is in the middle of this chaos, befriending both brothers in different ways, understanding both sides, and while trying to improve his life to be a better dad to Grace himself in a new environment, make sure that ultimately, Steve’s son, Jack, isn’t facing harm. 

TL:DR I gave the McGarrett family a BIG can of worms and it was opened and now Danny’s gotta help them deal with emotions.

Mary looks away from the window to look at Steve who was still watching Andy and Jack until their car was long out of sight. Despite being told the insane shit storm their family’s found themselves in, it didn’t feel real until she met them herself. Even if they were her family too, it was so much more different for Steve. Still, she was confused by his apology. “For what?” 

“Somewhere along the way I did stop being your brother. A good one, anyway. Feeling like a failure as a son isn’t new. There’s plenty I served with who were just like it, so it just seemed like part of the course. I ignored it, like everyone else does. But now it’s fucking me over...I don’t know how to be a son. I’ve proven not to know how to be a good brother...and there’s someone else with my face being a better father to my son.” 

“Hey...don’t do that. You helped me when I needed it! I didn’t need a friend when I fucked up, I needed someone who loved me...someone who would look out for me! And you did! I’m sorry too. For...not being good at being a sister to you either. But you know what? I know it’s hard...but you’re trying. And that’s already more than what dad did for us.”

“Mmm...”

“Look. Siblings are their own species. We’ll figure out a plan of a attack together about what to do about Andy. As for Jack...well, you got a secret weapon. He may wear ties in Hawaii for some reason but that DILF you scored to be your partner is the perfect model you need to know what kind of dad your son deserves.”

Rewatching H50 s1 is an exercise in continuity... What the hell happened to Mary?

She gets to the island and is office-bound with babysitters until she slips out, then she’s still living at the house when Catherine finally comes ashore, then she’s just gone. No mention of “oh can’t do drinks Friday, Mary’s making dinner” or even “yeah Mary got a rental house to give me privacy” or w/e else excuse they could’ve come up with. She’s literally disappeared until she’s kidnapped, or did I miss something? Lol.
