Not sure if you ever watched Charmed---bear with me for a sec if you haven't - but Prue Halliwell is also a clear ENTJ just like Donna. And while Prue is more highbrow, less of a 'tomboy,' etc. they're both blunt, direct, bold, ambitious, arguably sometimes feared and intimidating etc - and both open when it comes to sharing thoughts and opinions but very reserved when it comes to FEELINGS and being vulnerable. Anyway, also just like Donna, the love of Prue's life is the literal boy next door who she's known since childhood, dated in high school, and reunited with as adults. (He...doesn't make it through more than one season alive, but that's neither here nor there lol) And even though Andy is a lot more practical, direct, proactive etc than Eric, the point is that I feel like as *NTJs it makes total sense that for both Prue and Donna their perfect love interests would be people they've known forever who are already familiar with their strengths and obstacles so that they can let their guards down, be more emotional and vulnerable and all that stuff that doesn't come naturally for them. And since they don't TRULY let most people in despite having experiences with other men, it makes sense that that neither ever found anyone else they'd love like they did the guy they were close friends with since childhood. Not sure what if any point I'm making here but I just wanted to validate you re Donna being a total ENTJ and say that somehow her ENTJ-ness makes it even more clear that the literal boy next door who she's known forever would be the guy she'd end up with :)

I have not seen Charmed, but a similar ENTJ comparison to Donna is Elizabeth I, too. Well, Elizabeth had Jackie-ish vanity, but other than that, it's almost a dead ringer. Elizabeth, like Donna, was smart, focused, and temperamental. Plus, she had a very Eric-y love of her life, Robert Dudley. They had been friends since childhood, but political circumstances and personal trauma dictated they'd never get married. Dudley kept trying, though, until he gave up and married her cousin.

Anywho, I hate when Donna is typed as an ESTP. That focuses on some of her weaknesses, her self-destructive impulsiveness, rather than her strengths. She's a very clear XNTJ, and thrives when she's focused, but I lean ENTJ. Her Se isn't so bad she lives in la la land sometimes, like an INTJ (like me).

The Old Guard (Movie)

okay after days and days of seeing the lovely Joe and Nicky just pop up in my youtube recommendation along with the other gay couples. I finally finally got my hands on the movie and found the perf day to watch it.

Okay let’s begin the reaction. Which im actually writing as soon as i ended the film.

First thing first, i was expecting a repeat of the monologue of when they first died on screen again when the scene repeated. Lowkey hurt that it didn’t happen but i can see why.

Second, the betrayal box was shown on the trailer so that was not surprising. Sad that Lala, sorry that’s the character from kinky boots lol, i’m sad about Copley’s character. His reason for betraying Andy and the gang was personally not good enough.

I can see why Copley would be persistent on having a cure for disease. Anyone who had a love one die because of some uncurable disease would feel that way. Still, i call bs on his naive thinking. A bunch of immortals being handed off to a scientist, AND HE THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE GOING TO BE MORALLY GOOD ABOUT IT? AND NOT TREAT SAID IMMORTALS AS RATS?

Really dude?

Is the history in The Old Guard universe THAT different for ours? Is racism not a thing there? Hilarious.

Sorry I wanted to word the above stuff in a more direct way, but i feel like it’s going to be a bit vile and too much so i’ll refrain from saying it. All i’m gonna say is that Copley was not thinking when he cooperated with a white scientist guy.

My bad way of thinking aside. Let’s get back to the movie.

When Booker first came on to the screeen i felt bad vibes from him. Something about his whole thing was not clicking for him. I knew something was bad was going to happen.

Also a sign that Booker and Copley is going to betray them would’ve been when Copley saw that Nicky had his gun on him. I doubt Copley could see from that far. So unless Booker fed him info, that will be entirely impossible.

Moving on, the bullshit that is mr lex luthor batman v superman edition 2.0 and his ranting in that convention. I knew i’m gonna hate him as soon as he opened his mouth.

One thing i hate the most are villains who justify their medical bullshittery.

We all want for medicine to progress.

We are all aware that science is never morally good. And most of all doctors and scientists has the moral compass of a cookoo clock.

An immortal plus a scientist will always always equate to fucking hot mess.

I knew Copley is going to have a reason for why he was working with Merrick. Copley was morally good, he really thought he was doing the right thing, hell he worshiped the gang and their results. Its just that for him, he wanted to have a hand on it.

We can all debate whether he has ulterior motives subconsciously. Or whether it was all just about his wife dying. (my side will be that he subconsciously wanted a hand on shaping the future, but it was buried by his want to save people who was suffering what he went through.)

But yeah that connection was solidified when he talked about his wifey.

Now can we just talk about that scene of Joe and Nicky just spitting poems at one another? Right off the bad we were introduced with a soft spoken and soothing Nicky with a snarky Joe and my goooooood when Joe started talking about who Nicky is for him my heart clenched and I just imagined being the receiving end of both of their romantic gestures. Omfg i would dieeee.

(fun fact, even after watching the trailer and seeing a lot of gifs and edits of that scene, it didn’t click to me that Joe is played by Hot Jafar actor. My friend had to point that out for me to finally get the AHA moment xD. I knew something was familiar about the guy and his voice but yeah xD)

I wish to be sang by Joe and Nicky as they both cuddle me to sleep. Oh to be the middle of that sandwhich ;A; one can only hope.

Oh i also wanted to talk about Nile’s pov with killing. I have no idea how long she had been in the military before “awakening” so im not sure and again this might sound immature, tone deaf or ignorant but, she really joined the military and was surprised that they kill people and taught to deal with it? Has she not heard of the veterans who leave the military filled with ptsd and some other stuff?

At the very least she looks like a millenial and you’re telling me she has that all sunshine and rainbows point of view of the military? This is like Copley all over again. That ranting was really unnecessary and it didn’t even resolve or whatever.

I get it she’s young and new. She literally has a family she couldn’t leave just like that BUT all she focused on is the fact that Andy killed a lot of people? REALLY? THAT’S WHAT MAKES YOU NOT WANT TO HELP THEM?

Im sorry that part is just ridiculous for me. At the very least find something better to hang over Andy’s head. Like i dunno colluding with drug people i guess?

OH OH You know what really made me sure that Booker is working for Copley and Merrick? That is when he talked about his son dying of cancer. That moment I was like “Oh yep this is my confirmation. I better prepare myself.”

I want to be thankful that the torture scene was not too much. I hate plots and tropes of scientists and doctor quacks toying with humanity and such because they are always so graphic and just inhumane. Thank god the director is a woman and we didn’t have to deal with unnecessary testosterone bullshitery that most male directors do for their movies.

I was definitely not expecting to feel sad for Booker. When they passed the judgement to him, It was fucking sad. Deserving but nonetheless sad. Booker hated being alone and straight boy has a point when he talked about how Nicky and Joe have one another. But still fucker got my gays locked up, I ain’t treating him nicely after that.

OH THE TWIST AT THE END. IM FUCKING SURPRISED. AND HORRIFIED THAT SHE MIGHT BE THE NEW BIG BAD.

AND BOOKER POTENTIALLY WORKING WITH HER? straight boy really ain’t learning anything huh.

Im excited for the possibility of a second. I’m excited to see more of Quynh and what she can do. I really hope that she ends up becoming a goodie at the end. I really don’t want her to just die as a villain.

Overall. Despite the lack of solid motivations and conflicts and stuff, the movie is very good. I rarely watch action movies because its always testoroney filled bullshits. and just dicking romance but yeah The Old Guard is right up my alley.

Now for the theories i come up while watching.

Disclaimer that I have not or is not going to follow the comics that this movie is based on. I don’t have the interest to do so so if any of my theories is actually canon and has already been talked about before, and is confirmed, please understand that I don’t do in depth research for these posts. This is all just the ranting of a guy who watched a movie. Not a critique that seem to be very abundant here in tumblr.

Theory The immortal 5

I have not kept track on how many immortals are there but my theory is that only 5 immortals are allowed to exist. When Andy lost her immortality she said that its finally her time, that maybe she finally reached her end goal. Does that mean that Nile was not immortal before that time? I would assume so because her family would’ve freaked out right off the bad when she’s a kid and her wounds just close up right in front of them.

So the immortality is not birth given but rather bestowed when one of the immortals reach their end. Im not sure if it’ll be just 5 or so, but there seems to be a give and take situation with the immortality. We also find that it’s not according to who got it first or who’s the oldest since some guy died first before Andy when we know Andy is the oldest.

uhmm... welps i think i forgot the rest of the theories i have in my head that haven’t yet confirmed by the film lmao.

oh well.

ANYWHO.

I love it i loooooove it

BOOK | Unqualified by Anna Faris

When I was about to begin this book, I was blindsided by the subtitle that I have never seen and only found on the official title page once I opened it. This is not just Unqualified by Anna "Rhymes with Donna” Faris; this is Unqualified: Love and Relationship Advice from a Celebrity Who Just Wants to Help. Excuse me WHAT?! Turns out, I’ve been under a rock and this is the gist of both her podcast and her book. And here I thought I knew things. *facepalm*

While she may not necessarily be qualified in the love department, she is actually qualified to write a book. Or at least a little more qualified than some other celebrities. Our lovely Anna actually has a degree in English from the University of Washington, and that honestly gave me so much hope going into Unqualified. One thing I always struggle with is when celebrities are given book deals seeming to only sprout from their fame; most are horrible writers, but I suppose that’s what gives those books their charm, proving even in the slightest that yes, celebrities are just as flawed as we are, except with more money. ANYWHO, finding out that Anna knows her stuff was such a promising fact. ‘Cause let me tell you, if I based reading a book on it’s Foreword, I would have put this one down and walked far away. (That’s not entirely true, but you know what I mean).

Let’s start by talking about the Foreword by her then-husband Chris Pratt.

First and foremost, I want to say that, knowing that Anna and Chris announced/got divorced shortly after the publishing of this book in 2017 kind of puts a damper on the whole thing. Not because it may insinuate to some readers that she should not be giving advice on love and relationships, but rather because they were such a cute couple and, as many fans said once it was announced, makes it feel like love is dead if these two couldn’t make it. So the dedication, the foreword, and the plethora of times she discussed her relationship with Chris throughout the book were all so sad. And the way she talks about him and the anecdotes of what he’s done for her... it really is so difficult to believe that these two didn’t last.

Secondly, Chris Pratt should not be writing. This foreword was so painfully awkward that, like I said, if I were basing my continuation of a book on that first introduction, I would not have read it. And if you Google the topic, you will find numerous online articles with this same connotation; we all agree it is baaaad. Not only did he spend more time talking about himself and how he doesn’t know what a “foreword” is, he also made it sound like it was just an obligation with a word count. “I love her and respect her and told her I would” was his reasoning. Not once did I feel like he set the mood for the book from a more personal perspective, as a person who was her family for a decade, but rather he was giving us a short biography of Anna – things like how they both grew up in Washington, how they’re both actors that play idiots (his Andy Dwyer to her Cindy Campbell), how acting is her passion, various traits of her personality (how she is kind and what he calls an “information collector”). There was one line that made me believe that he was writing this foreword as a way to convince us to give Anna a book deal as if we were the publishers. He says “Anna deserves this book. I can promise you it will be a great and interesting read.” Yes, Chris, it was. But your foreword could have provided so much more than a grade-school style report on your ex-wife. I’m so glad Anna also wrote her own introduction. If you do end up reading this book, please just skip right to her intro.

In the first handful of chapters of Unqualified, I wasn’t entirely convinced that this book was worth reading. Especially during those times where she straight up admitted that she was giving advice based on speculation instead of actual experience. I’m not saying that Anna has to have experienced everything experience-able in order to talk to people about it, but saying that she didn’t actually have a relationship related to a certain topic just puts a damper on what she’s trying to help with. Like the list of men she says to not date; it includes musicians, doctors, athletes, chefs, therapists, and actors. (It also includes magicians, but I think most women steer clear of them anyways lol). With the exception of actors, none of those are based on her own personal experiences with anyone in those professions. She even says to us “I have zero experience.” So who should you date, as per Anna Faris? Woodworkers. Or a guy who makes boats, because they brood. *shakes head* Girl, I can’t even.

While I’m indifferent to the portions of Unqualified regarding her childhood through most of her young adult life (college shenanigans don’t really pique my interest), there is a passage that has stuck with me long after finishing this book. Anna’s childhood crush/ “boyfriend” (she was 8 years old here, call it what you will) had just dumped her. So she goes home, grabs an orange from the fridge, writes this horrible boy’s name on it in marker, and then proceeds to chuck said orange into the forest behind her family’s home as a means to get over him. Anna dubs this the “orange ceremony,” which she says she must have felt it symbolic, wherein casting fruit into the “abyss” would rid her of the emotions of the situation. She may have been a child at the time, but as an adult, I absolutely love this concept. This sort of symbology is very reminiscent of various practices in paganism. Obviously not her intent as I highly doubt she was a practicing pagan at eight-years-old, but the truth is, things like this can actually work. Some of us older individuals would just need a lot of oranges.

The reason it has taken me soooo much longer to write a review for Unqualified (I finished it months ago, yikes!), is because I honestly just don’t know how I feel about it. My notebook is filled with pull-quotes and excerpts that stirred me in some way, shape, or form – and many of them, very good! – but as an overall novel, I can’t decide if I should keep it for a future reread, or donate it. The only thing I feel that really sticks out in my mind about this book was how much I hated Chris Pratt’s introduction. And that is sad and depressing.

I did like that Unqualified was not just purely about love and relationships advice, and that it was intermixed with her personal memoir. I say that because there were plenty of times where her advice was not even advice at all. Like, for example, when she moved to Los Angeles with/for her then boyfriend. It’s reminiscent of an action many women take in tales of love. However, Anna also followed a career venture. This wasn’t solely about following her boyfriend out of sheer infatuation; if the relationship didn’t work out, she still had something there to fall back on, and that’s not something typical of an experience like this. Granted, yes, it’s kudos on her part for going for her own reasons, as well as for a guy, and it plays into her discussion of feminism at the beginning of the chapter. But in this of many parts of the book that was supposedly advice-driven, I made the note that maybe one sentence or one small paragraph at the end could have passed for guidance. At least, in most cases, she’s aware it’s not helpful.

Despite my typical qualms with books like Unqualified, at least for the time being I think it will remain on my shelves with my other keepers. Although her counsel is indeed questionable at times, it’s hard to deny how much I relate to Anna Faris and agreed with a good handful of the statements she makes in the book. And instead of doing all the talking herself, portions of Unqualified found basis from her podcast listeners through "Listener Responses,” as well as discussions and interviews with some people in her life (like Sim Sarna, her podcast partner in crime, and then husband Chris Pratt), and I like that aspect about it. It’s not just Anna retelling information from her perspective; it’s letting those people she has learned from have a voice as well.

I jotted a final note that I think sums up my thoughts on this book pretty well: Unqualified probably could have just remained a podcast. But for those of us not necessarily interested in listening to hours upon hours of content, the book is a good alternative, especially since Anna mentions in the beginning that the book is based on what she learned through two years of the podcast. A lot of Unqualified contained thoughts and experiences I personally could relate to and has happened to me, so, to quote myself “I suppose her book did what she wanted it to do.”

-they all want to go on a group trip somewhere and after a lot of convincing, their parents finally agree to letting them.

-their flight is at 6am and they are nervous they’ll get there too late so they get there at 3am and just mess around at the airport and run around

-tj suggests they ride on their suitcases down the moving walkway things

-jonah bushes marty when he’s sitting on it and well, marty falls on his face

-cyrus being afraid of almost all of the rides and is hesitant about it but tj reassures him that he won’t make him go on any rides he doesn’t want to and cyrus just swoons

-marty and buffy make everything there a competition such as who can meet the most characters, buffy wins.

-jonah decided to make a little scavenger hunt for them all with merch items around the park,,, it’s chaotic

-tj and cyrus don’t do very well because cyrus keeps getting distracted by other items in the shops and tj can’t get himself to pull cyrus away from the because of the way his eyes light up

-he ends up buying him some of the things he was looking at

-tj gets cyrus a rainbow mickey mouse pin and the way cyrus’ face lights up makes tj the happiest

-amber, andi and jonah don’t really care much about it, they care more about the food

-marty and buffy are competitive about it and are thrilled when they find all the items and start whining when they discover the others didn’t really do it.

-they all end up spending way too much money on merch and they decided that it was a bad idea to go to the shops

-they all decide to go on the spiny teacups

-they try to see how many people can fit in one teacup until an employee tells them they all can’t sit in it together

-tj, jonah, amber and marty are speeding at the speed of light, marty telling them to slow down and tj yells at him telling him he can’t tell them what to do and starts spinning it faster

-andi, buffy and cyrus spin the cup really fast and cyrus tries to slow it down and fails and just accepts his fate of death

-amber is pretty chill the whole time but then she meets belle and her inner lesbian comes out

-jonah is recording the whole interaction

-meanwhile andi and tj are at the shop next door looking for things they could use as craft supplies

-buffy has to drag them out before they spend the last of their money

-tj, marty and jonah come up with stupid challenges such as who can finish their turkey legs the fastest and andi, buffy, amber and cyrus just watch in horror

-it does not go well and putting it shortly jonah throws up and tj and marty feel like they’re gonna explode and they regret their life decisions

-whenever one of them tries to take a picture with their significant other jonah photobombs them

-they honestly just do the stupidest things but they all have fun regardless of how much they embarrassed themselves

Kind of bummed after SDCC. Danai was her gorgeous self. Would have loved if Andy had showed up when Danai announced her exit from the show. To be denied that little moment (and have JDM as a placeholder instead, yuck!) irks me in a small, yet irrational-Richonner way. Forgive my dramatics, lol. Needed to get that out and feel like you understand. Fingers crossed that maybe he'll show up - like Cudlitz & Co for Sonequa, if Danai does TTD this season?

I do understand! It really didn’t feel the same without Andy there. Much in the same way as the show, there was just something missing. And yeah, I wish at least Melissa or Norman had been beside Danai - someone who’s been there her entire time. But even then, as she’s shared most of her scenes with Andy and Chandler, I don’t think anyone besides him (them) would’ve felt right for that moment. (By the way, Gimple really blew up everything by killing Carl, didn’t he? 🥴)

Anywho! I do hope Andy surprises her/us too. Selfishly, I’d like it to be at NYCC, though Andy seems like the type to want her to have her moment. But maybe he’ll go to the premiere. I can’t really imagine Danai doing Talking Dead again, since she hasn’t been on it since season 6, I think? Save for the premieres, of course. I can see her doing what Andy did and just doing a pre-taped interview. Especially if she’s not really gone and she ends up doing the movies. 🤔 But we’ll see!

So, I had a thought today about the whole Buffy x Walker x Andi thing we’re getting.

I was thinking back on the little moments that may have led to Buffy getting a crush on Walker. The one that comes to mind is when he made that drawing of the GHC for her before she went to Phoenix. She did tell Cyrus that the crush was new and he didn’t want her telling Andi.

So, what if, while she was in Phoenix, this drawing is front and center in her room and she looks at it every day, not only thinking of her friends but also of the guy who made it for her? Perhaps, one of the reasons she didn’t try to contact Andi or Cyrus was because she was also thinking about those new feelings for the guy Andi had also liked and was feeling guilty for liking him?

Another thing that also comes to mind is that Buffy also told Cyrus that she wasn’t going to do anything about the crush. So, if she wasn’t going to do anything about it... how is she suddenly dating Walker?

I thought about it and I have a theory.

When Buffy came back, obviously, Jonah and Andi got together. They seemed happier and on the right track with their relationship, now. At The Spoon, they were being all cute and adorable. And she’s seeing this and possibly thinking, “Maybe it could work. If Andi and Jonah figured it out, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.”

Thus, leading to her possibly making a move on Walker. (I don’t know if they’ll go over how they got together, but hopefully, they do so we finally have answers!)

But, then, what leads them to possibly break up? The return of Marty may have less to do with their breakup but is still somewhat related to him.

We saw how Buffy was like with Marty. They clicked. They worked. They balanced each other out. Their competitive nature defined their relationship, pretty much. And one of the reasons Buffy rejected him was because she believed that labeling what they had as a relationship would cause it to crash and burn like Andi and Jonah’s. But, now that she’s seeing that it could work, she decided to try with Walker.

But... as we all know... relationships aren’t quite as straightforward. Each individual person in the relationship has their own needs that need to be met. And relationship dynamics differ depending on the couple.

If Buffy jumped into a relationship with Walker, believing that it would be just like her own dynamic with Marty or even similar to the brief cuteness that was Andi and Jonah, that spells disaster. She has needs (like a friendly competition) that Marty was able to fulfill but Walker may not. At the same time, Walker may need a partner (not a competitor) with whom he could work on art and understands his eccentricity and I don’t quite know if Buffy can fulfill that.

Basically, Wuffy would have been cute if they had time to develop more. But, the relationship itself is so rushed that it will also end quickly. This isn’t just the writers trying to find a rush plot but it reinforces the notion that rushed relationships don’t often work out for the best.

We don’t know what their relationship is like, yet. Maybe it will be cute. Or maybe it will be awkward. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Whoaaa... did I write an essay? I’m supposed to be working. Lol. Anywho, those are my thoughts. What do you guys think?

Galacon over!

So a couple other people did end up finding me at Galacon~ I think like 3 or 4?

Anywho, it was SO GREAT! Oh my gosh it was the best one yet, so fun, SO FUN I loved getting to see my friends and we all had such a good time and the special guests were AMAZING ALL OF YOU Y’ALL ARE GREAT

The whole trip got off to a rocky start with some money problems and with the hotels and there were a few moments where all the travelling around was difficult, and oh yeah, IT WAS HOT Like SO hot. We all had to make sure we and each other were drinking enough water and not being in the sun long it was just way too much. For like most of the first day there were no fursuiters at all and we were wondering if the “fursuit walk” would even be still on. turns out it was and it rained suddenly while it was going on XD

Anyway the VA panel was so fun and the comic artist panel with Andy Price was great too. Getting to meet each of the VAs was fantastically fun and they all were very very approachable and nice. Kelly, Ian & Claire, Elley-Ray, you are all wonderful people

Everyone else I talked to was fantastic also. don’t need to be a special guest to be an amazing person! I always love the atmosphere of Galacon and how great everyone is.

Luckily I had a good camera with me this tiem so maybe I’ll share some pics later.

After the con, we stayed over through Monday to hang out with people, including an awesome sticker creating activity time with Imalou and her friends. And then stayed over to Tuesday where, after a day of hanging out, myself, CutePencilCase and our friend Cro headed over to the airport and said goodbye to our friend Shikogo as we flew off back to Gatwick.

Adventure's not over yet though, cus instead of rushing to get uncomfortable transport home in the middle of the night, CPC and I decided to stay at a hostel and hang out the next day with our friend Delta who we also hung out with on Tuesday and who was flying to the UK before going back to America. it was a very fun day of hanging out with those guys, CPC and I went to Perchance and got some awesome art supplies and then she, I and Cro sat on a bench and chatted while we fed crisps to some mice in the bushes in front of us. when we met up with Delta we just found a park to sit in and we hung out and had ice cream and it was great.

Trip home was rocky (Literally! Bumpy train. ... and full of drunk guys.) but I got back safely, tuckered out. Galacon started early Friday morning for me and ended Wednesday the next week! Longest one ever haha. Some of us want to talk about arranging a proper brony meetup after Galacon, but have no idea how to go about doing that lol.

Even now, my friends and I are still making plans to see each other. We just can’t get enough of each other.

Had a nap? Kinda, I guess? I fell asleep at around 9, 9:30ish...woke up at around 1 AM, and here I am now. I don’t plan on sleeping anymore.

Kissed someone? Just my dogs.

Used a cheese grater? No, I don’t think I’ve consumed any cheese today either.

Eaten something sweet? Nah, it’s all been salty/savory for me today.

Our internet disappeared at around 2 in the afternoon and it still hasn’t come back, and our service provider’s social media has been unsurprisingly unresponsive and useless. I’ve been using data since then and I’m just worried about how long this would take because I don’t want to keep spending just for extra load. I also have my Korean language classes this afternoon which will for sure require a lot of data :/

Checked your emails? I mean that’s kind of the standard in my job lol I have my Gmail tab up throughout the 8 hours.

Travelled on a bus? I’ve never ridden a bus solely for commuting by myself. I’ve only been on them when it’s the arranged vehicle, like for school field trips or our family vacations. Our public buses are quite bleck and unsanitary and the drivers maneuver the buses like it’s their last goddamn hour on the planet, so I don’t get on them myself.

Washed your face? I mean yeah, when I take showers. I don’t really have a skincare routine though, if that’s what you mean.

Used a blender? We rarely have a use for a blender at home so we don’t even have one.

Received a phone call? No. My biggest pet peeve is when delivery riders call me up once they’ve arrived at our place just to say “I’m here,” but fortunately the one assigned to me today to deliver my package knew how to use the doorbell.

Talked to someone you dislike? Yeah I have to deal with a client I absolutely fucking despise everyday.

Consumed alcohol? I’ve thought of it, but then I thought of how sleepy I get whenever I drink alcohol and decided against it because I wanted to stay up tonight.

Eaten pasta? Yeah, my dad made Filipino-style spaghetti for dinner the other evening.

Punk is slated to make his debut on AEW/return to pro wrestling next weekend or sometime soon, idrk - and this is a big fucking deal omg, 15 year old Robyn has arisen from her grave - and Andi and I made plans to watch it together so we can freak the fuck out.

Asked someone for a favour? Yes. I borrowed cash from my mom since the delivery fee for my packaging earlier was apparently cash on delivery.

Watched something funny? I mean I watch BTS clips pretty much everyday and a gigantic chunk of them are hilarious.

Browsed Reddit? I did actually! After a super long time of not doing so...I just decided to randomly check out r/bangtan to see what’s going on there. It’s mostly Americans though so idk if I’ll make a habit out of browsing.

At first I used to bitch about the really long shipping period considering all the products come from Korea, but after 3 or 4 fulfilled orders you kinda get used to it.

Broken up with someone? Yessss. I didn’t know it at the time but it would turn out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

Out of Order with Under The Dome

It seems like a lifetime ago that I cracked the spine on Carrie and started this silly journey to read King chronologically. King Khongraphical kinda sounds like a lost Kardashian sister.

In reality, I read Carrie exactly 5 years ago. Somehow reading 54 King books in 5 years simultaneously makes me feel like a failure and a winner all at once. Impressive? Sure (?) Still pretty lame that I have ~20 books left to read. For sure.

But I did read all 50-some-odd books as intended; in exact order of publishing date. I finished each and every one of them, even when I was sick of nazis, child abuse, school shootings or cocaine aliens.

Until now. Boo!

Anywho, technically next on my list is Just After Sunset, a collection of short stories, but I just. can’t. finish. it.

Throughout the pandemic I have driven from Tennessee to Minnesota twice to see my family. There’s only so much Taylor Swift one can listen to in the car, and 28 hour round trips called for a King intervention. So I picked up the Under The Dome audiobook and went back to Maine. I promise (to myself) I will finish up JAS before I get to my next read (and one of my true favorites), 11/22/63.

Ok, Under The Dome. Let’s do it y’all!

I read this book in high school and my lingering memory from then is one of frustration over the source of the dome being aliens. Turns out high school me (who also thought Holden Caulfield was the epitome of cool) was not a reliable narrator, because this book is certified rad.

It really has everything that folks love about King - Maine, lots of fun characters, a little love story, some cool kiddos, drugs, a hero, a villain. The only thing it’s really missing is a spooky house, but I guess the dome can count.

The premise is simple, if complex town-shaped invisible domes that can’t be penetrated can be considered simple. Our hero, Dale Barbara, is leaving on “Dome Day” but doesn’t make it out in time cause some hottie blonde in a pickup truck doesn’t stop for him on the road. Thems the breaks, Barbie. He is also, per King-hero usual, haunted by demons. But this time around, our hero is a short order cook, not an author. Steve’s really stretching here. Our villain is James “Big Jim” Rennie, a sleazy used car salesman (lol) and also a drug kingpin? He’s operating the country’s largest meth cookhouse, somehow in Maine, because that definitely makes sense? Why not.

What transpires is a pretty fun and epic ride through the initial dome discovery (planes crashing, chipmunks cut in half), subsequent WTF reactions of everyone in Chester’s Mill, an immense power struggle between the goodies and the baddies, meth, explosions, and at the end of the day, a whole lot of people deadzo.

So yeah, the dome is placed by alien children playing some fucked up game of RISK in their alien bedrooms ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ At the end of the day it’s not super important, as with all stories such as this one, the real bad guys are the humans, not the alien kiddos. If you’ve ever watched The Walking Dead, you get it.

Julia Shumway serves as our female lead, and King doesn’t really give her much to work with, but she does get to be a writer, so good for her! To Julia’s credit, she is the one that uses her female powers of empathy to appeal to said alien children and get them to take down the dome. Too bad like everyone else is dead by then. A+ for effort!

All jokes aside, this was a great story start to finish, and was a wonderful jump back into the King pond after almost a year away. There’s a lot to chew on with this one, a a true quintessential King. Kuintessential King Kardashian anyone?

I’m not much for audiobooks, but I felt for the guy reading this one. How do you come up with enough inflections and voices for all these characters? God bless him. I am genuinely curious how long it took him to record the 34 hours of audio and how much he got paid.

King had the idea for a novel about how humans would handle being cut off from society back in the 70s, and revisited the idea in an unpublished work called The Cannibals in the 80s, about folks trapped in an apartment building that, I’d guess, decide to start eating each other. Eventually the idea evolved into Under The Dome. In an interview, King said he was inspired by the Bush-Cheney dynamics of a post 9/11 America, with the guy who was really in charge (Georgie Bushie, played by Andy Sanders in the novel) as an incompetent buffoon. It’s worth noting that Andy Sanders eventually ends up hooked on meth and conspires to help explode the town and kill most everyone. Then you’ve got Dick Cheney (aka Big Jim Rennie) pulling all the strings, picking all the fights, taking all the power, murdering, and generally being a bad guy. So in case you’re wondering if King was a fan of the Bush years, I’d go ahead and say, uh, no, no he was not.

First Line: From two thousand feet, where Claudette Sanders was taking a flying lesson, the town of Chester’s Mill gleamed in the morning light like something freshly made and just set down.

Last Line: Pity was not love, Barbie reflected… but if you were a child, giving clothes to someone who was naked had to be a step in the right direction.

Adaptations:

Oh CBS. Please stop buying the rights to King adaptations. I will say I was not singing the praises of how they handled The Stand. But that’s a rant for another day.

This show ran for THREE seasons. I watched the premiere when it aired (they really went for the drama with the whole cut-a-cow-in-half thing, I’ll give them that) and revisited the finale for fun after I finished the book. I may have found the time to rewatch all of LOST but I am definitely not taking the time to watch three full seasons of Under the Dome. First of all, Barbie is a murderer? And he killed Julia Shumway’s husband?? WTF is that all about? Barbie is our hero. Fuck off CBS.

But we do get Dean Norris, aka Uncle Hank, in some superb casting as Big Jim Renny.

THEY’RE MINERALS MARIE!

I guess there was some alien mind control, some magical amethysts, and a lot of liberties taken from the source material on the show. Let me tell you, there is nothing worse than an ambiguous ending on a cancelled show. Did the writers leave hopeful that someone would be so impressed by this that they’d pick the show back up for a 4th season?

Meanwhile, catty Stephen throwing shade on Twitter is always my favorite.

groundhog day: a review

this got really long and became pretty much organized by song

here we go!

first off, the staging and choreography for this show is fantastic, i knew that right from the opening number. and each of the character's unique looks was very refreshing, especially considering how used to the costuming for jersey boys.

"small town, usa" is definitely a favorite song, has been since i listened to the soundtrack. phil is such an asshole in the beginning and andy does a great job playing him.

also rita dances a little when the ensemble breaks out into the groundhog jingle and it's???? so???? cute???? she is precious, protect her. (though she can probably handle herself, lol)

phil being a dick to the homeless guy was not cool, what an asshole

i can't remember the full line but the shorter cop's joke about the blizzard being a donut was great

i can't remember day two as much, ahh

day three was interesting. i like to title it existential crisis, the musical. it's just phil freaking the fuck out for three minutes. always kind of fun to listen to on the soundtrack, but the reactions were a little less exaggerated in the show, but it works, because you can see it. the soundtrack is, obviously, all sound, so you have to picture everything.

"stuck" has always been another favorite song of mine. honestly, i have so many faves in this show. why didn't tim get the tony for lyrics? ugh!

anyway, the performance is even better. so, so funny. the enema part had everyone laughing, and i was too. again, choreography: a+

"nobody cares" is such a bop!!!! we had an understudy for ralph, i'll find the name later, but he was great. the choreography with the shot glasses was so clever, and was clearly inspired by THAT pitch perfect song.

(also, the car chase with the toy cars? hilarious. that aspect of the show, using toy cars to mimic driving, was also clever and very funny.)

the initial cop chase was hilarious too, with the guys holding the cars. ugh, i loved this show!!!

(also phil probably has a bondage kink bc tight handcuffs, pass it on)

(oh and a pain kink)

(i don't write smut but this show gave a fair amount of opportunity for kinks, okay?)

philandering was fun. the sex with nancy was... interesting. andy and rebecca were probably just standing there making sex noises, right? i can only imagine how hard it was to keep a straight face the first time they rehearsed that number.

(that was the number with him on the bed basically having a threesome, right? or foursome. there was a dude there. phil connors, bisexual icon.)

oh my god the diner scene. is it possible to be attracted to legs? bc andy has some nice ones. oh wow.

his acl must be doing better, though. it looked like just a compression sock-type thing was on. i'm glad he's feeling better.

(this was the song where he was even more of an asshole, right? bc it was so funny. i laughed the most here in act one, probably bc i didn't know what to expect, for once.)

"one day" is the best song in the show and you can fight me. barrett is amazing. definition of the word queen. where is her damn tony?

so, act two.

"playing nancy" is underrated. i was never a huge fan, but mostly bc i didn't know the character. now that i do, i love the song even more, and rebecca has a beautiful voice.

the next scene literally left me in shock. i knew phil's suicide was coming, but the way it happened - wow. he grabs the gun and goes beserk. he shoots the groundhog and then himself. my jaw was dropped until the spotlight came back on him in bed.

where "one day" is barrett's time to shine, "hope" is andy's. yes, he's the lead, he's been carrying songs the entire time, but this song features his absolute best vocals. i had chills. i think there were bits in this song, maybe when he kept ending up back in bed (what kind of sorcery is that? how do they do it? my mom literally asked me during the song and i was like "i have no idea"), or walked out with the covers, where people were laughing, and i didn't like it. feel what you want during a show, but suicide is not something to be taken lightly. i was close to tears during this song. absolutely amazing.

give andy karl a tony you cowards.

anywho, "everything about you" is beautiful. i loved that rita knew, even if she forgot the next day. i think it was a great development in their relationship. of course she hated him at first, but he kept changing, and i loved the trust they began to have in one another.

"night will come" also hit really hard. seeing the guy die over and over was not easy to watch, and i can only imagine how phil felt. but he kept trying, and i guess he just accepted that fate in the end, right? kinda the whole point of the song. and now knowing who the "her" was in the song also hit really hard. poor ned. such a sweet man, does not deserve that kind of pain and sorrow.

sorry if my comments are becoming repetitive, but "philanthropy" is also fun. very all over the place. i love the choreography. and phil's change in character. the tin man does have a heart after all! (does that count as a wicked reference? bc i would love to make jokes about andy's other roles. there are just... so many...)

gonna skip over punxsutawney rock bc it's kinda forgetful...

"seeing you" leaves me in tears every time. from andy's soft, sweet vocals to the scenery. gorgeous song, gorgeous performance. i loved it so much.

and for the record, i am phil/rita trash. i am ready to write 10,000 soulmate aus for them. or any au. just give me all the fics. (the show has an ao3 tag now and i am ready to read everything.)

the ending is one of the best parts of the show. i was so happy phil got out of the loop, and i was a little surprised to see that rita spent the night. but i definitely don't think they slept together in /that/ way. i can see them being up late, talking about life and the snow and the town, and rita conks out and phil just smiles and falls asleep next to her. (probably doesn't really touch her much bc he knows she has boundaries.)

(look at me, already writing the fic. i'm shipper trash, boom.)

so, yeah, amazing show overall. i would love to go back, but bronx tale is my next must-see before its leads leave. (richard, most importantly, but i really wanna see bobby too bc he is phenomenal on the soundtrack - but anyway.) but who knows if i'll even get to see another show this year? last year was an unusual circumstance, with jersey boys closing and all.

i gotta talk characters real quick bc i love them all!!! fred and debbie were precious lil beans. ned was nice, and i think i've seen people ship him with phil and now i see why. nancy was sweet and thankfully got a happy ending (with the camera guy!!! aww!!!). the mayor was funny (when he talked to phil the groundhog in the bar, it had the theater laughing every single time). ralph and his drinking pal were fun and lowkey gay. (they're dating shhh.)

also!!!! the waiter guy - billy? - was dancing with the shorter cop guy (i forget his name!!!) during "seeing you" and i almost screamed. not huge representation, but still there and quite cute. (and the fact that billy's accidental coming out was glossed over and not a big deal was v great to see.)

rita is my feminist queen and i love her.

phil is... a dick. but a redeemable one at that, as he proved in the show. i love him too and am totally adopting him, lol. he needs protection (but rita probably has that covered).

i would totally give the show a 9/10. again, would love to see a second time. such a fun show with a lot of heart. i felt so at home in august wilson, i would go back once a year if i could.
