Amber, in your experience, how's the casual approach to skincare and makeup in the US and SK? I haven't been to either country and obviously TV and social media are so heavily filtered, but is it common for people to wear lots of makeup or invest plenty of time and money on skincare? There's been a huge surge in LatAm for South Korean products and treatments, which I find interesting. Before that, the expensive brands were usually American or French.

uhhhhh. i mean like generally there's a wide range of consumer practices for skincare and makeup in any country?

the us is so huge and demographically varied that it's literally impossible to make a judgement on that kind of thing. but i will say that makeup culture is huge with women and skincare culture became more of a thing in the last decade. and at the same time there's just so many ppl that there's less pressure to participate in specific trends and it's seen as a personal preference. and u get socially pressured to do that stuff more in certain social groups.

south korea is an ethnically homogenous population that is v connected culturally/socially so it's easier to make generalizations tho so i will say that skincare is p normal for any age or gender demographic and ppl will think ur not as put together or take care of urself less if u don't put a little effort into taking care of ur skin. and that women r all expected to wear makeup in professional settings and more men wear makeup in south korea than in the US by percentage. but lots of ppl don't do skincare or makeup esp men. i would say that a lot of ppl just do like a bare minimum cleanser lotion sunblock thing.

Is BL Taking Off?

I think you’re right. A true analysis would have to look at YouTube unique watch numbers for BL over time plus things like new subscribers to GaGa & Viki who then watch mainly BL. That data is all proprietary. I don’t have access. So this is pure speculation. But I would guess if not exponential growth, 2021 is at least double 2019′s numbers. 

I think we can assume huge growth in these areas (audience, investment, international market penetration) based on a number of factors, including increased output/forthcoming BL announcements from: 

Korea (who watches and analyzes global viewer markets very carefully) and really only produces when it knows it has a growing market 

Thailand, specifically GMMTV’s line up, they pay attention to not just their viewer numbers and most popular productions of the past, but also to which of their actors get the most sponsorship, awards, and social media attention. They’re doubling their BLs from last year - that’s very telling. 

Active interest from newer countries with less developed film industries intent on breaking into BL (like Cambodia, Vietnam, and Singapore for example)

These will base their 2022 line ups, funding, and commissioned projects on what was effective/popular over the last 3 years: first internally then in surrounding countries and market shares. Also they absolutely take into account what is effective (penetrative) internationally (with nationalistic concerns around global social standing, increasing tourism, and political clout). 

Don’t ever discount the power of pop culture to manipulate consumer sentiment on a global scale. I can assure you these countries know which side their BL bread is buttered on. How many of us are learning Thai or want to visit Thailand partly because of Thai Bl? You know that tourism accounts for 12-15% of Thailand’s gross GDP, right? How many people are learning Korean or tried Korean food for the first time because of Kdramas? BTS?

Significantly. I talked about this with regards to (what Hollywood calls) the Apple Pie Demographic (women ages 25-65). Historically Apple Pie is the hardest for the entertainment industry to target because of their habit of never actually sitting down to watch anything (because they have work, or laundry, or errands, or something their husband/child would rather watch instead). This is also the romance reader/consumer demo (which includes BL). Apple Pie is the mainstay target demo for goods (products) but NOT for the entertainment industry. 

During lockdown it was this contingent that actually sat still for the first time in decades. I think it had a huge impact on streaming service watch numbers, including BL (but also stuff like Bridgeton and romantic Kdramas). (Yes I know we queers are out there too, but sadly, we are few if mighty and mostly not statistically significant on a macro scale. Sorry us.) 

The age bracket of Apple Pie also means that Thai BL’s, in particular, likely garnered large new audiences off YouTube during lockdown. Because YouTube’s end users also skew older and into this demo (by comparison to say SnapChat or TikTok). (NOTE: Smart SEO managers would be promoting BL HARD on Pinterest because it’s the same demo again. So if you blog about BL, Pin those gifs and still of pretty boys kissing for greater traffic.) 

I’m not sure they are quite this strategic, but back to the global pull, guess what else the Apple Pie demographic is historically responsible for? Planning weddings and family vacations. As soon a lockdowns stop, I think tourism to Thailand and Korea is going to seriously spike.

Hum. This I don’t think so much. The only really new production model I’ve seen in BL is long form commercials, like literally BL that is all one big product placement (Ingredients, Skinship). And that doesn’t look like it’s taking off. It seems more like places like Korea and Taiwan are revamping existing production houses to produce more BL. 

Thailand is just expanding and growing what started in 2016 exponentially in all directions at once (it feels like). But I actually anticipate a bit of a contraction from Thailand in 2022, especially the pulps. 

Japan, I do think, is changing slightly towards Korean-length BL series (they used to mostly just do live action yaoi movies). But these kinds of series (Given, Kieta Hatsukoi, Utsukushii Kare) are really just movie length shows broken up, so I suspect they are filming them in the same way and with the same kind of team as they always have since 2004. They are just airing them differently. And I think this shift is due to the rise in web series and streaming services more than anything else. 

It’s possible production models have shifted in the Philippines and Vietnam because of BL, but I don’t know what it was before, so...?

> Talent, pairs, and the taint of BL

You didn’t ask about this but I think it’s an interesting thing to note. 

In Korea it seems to be getting more and more “okay” for idols or former idols to safely do BL without too much of a residual pong. And I say this despite Hwall et al. Color Rush issues/whatevers. I don’t know if this is a social shift in younger actors away from homophobia, or if it’s just that there are so many KBLs in production now it’s becoming an acceptable gateway into the broader Kdrama industry. 

In Thailand, BL is certainly now just another thing a Thai actor will likely do at some point in his career. There are so many BLs, and so many pairs have ended in bellyflops, I think we are going to see more and more Thai actors who just do a BL to check-off the “romcom” or “melodrama” box, or because it’s a stepping stone that’s expected of them. Possibly, this might translate to fewer and fewer co-branded pairs. Or short term pairs who only last the length of the project and promo. And more free-agent actors like Singto and Ohm who do lots of BL but with different partners. Seeing GMMTV 2022 field First, Khaotung, Mike, and Krist outside of their original BL pairings was eye-opening to say the least, and feels like a big step for Thailand. 

I think these are all signs of increasing view numbers and broader demographic appeal. Not to mention ramped up production. 

Final Thoughts 

I have a whole stats thing I've been updating throughout this year. It monitors trends and production quantity, average series length, stuff like that. So I’ll have more hard data plus final numbers for you at the end of the year.

i totally hear you and i think you're completely justified in wanting the same progress to be made for latin america esp in the eyes of the western world who have the privilege to help out. honestly when i first started learning spanish i was really surprised to find out that the language had an actual word for female murder and the more i learned about it the more i realized what an issue it is in a lot of countries on the contintent, its almost an epidemic. plus such economic struggle, judicial and political corruption, poverty and instability etc.....ofc every country has that to an extent but the fact remains that "first world" countries exploit so much of south america, its labour and people and its resources, only to completely ignore the very issues we perpetuate. and it's literally a matter of life or death and like honestly i just. can NOT imagine how frustrating and upsetting it must be. to have to deal with ignorant stereotyping on top of all of that and to have ur struggle minimized, plus its such a vast place and like you said it gets so generalized. it's so beyond immoral. it's crazy to think that prejudice runs so deep and is so widespread, im really really sorry. i know words r never going to be enough and obviously i'll never understand what it's like but i completely get where youre coming from and i hope we're able to see positive change for latin america sooner rather than later, it's far past time :/

The Problem with Stanning Foreign Media

I’ve been avoiding saying this, cause I was afraid that people would antagonize and think badly of me. But I think it seriously needs to be addressed, especially from someone like me who is a dual citizen, who is bicultural and has three languages as my mothers tongue.

When you consume foreign art and media, you need to put aside your Western values and ethics. Because the reality is, these cultures and traditions don’t share the same values whatsoever. Especially when you’re talking about the Middle East or Asia. These are very conservative, traditional, religion/cultural based societies. They are not progressive, they are not liberal, they are not woke.

No matter how “woke” YOU think something is, the realities is that in their culture its actually pretty conservative and benign. You just view it as that and project “wokeness” on to a culture where that discussion doesn’t even exist.

One example I always give is Kpop. People see the dancing and men wearing make up, and they think “oh how progressive!”. Meanwhile, in Korean culture, that actually isn’t viewed as progressive AT ALL. In fact, to them it’s very conservative cause men and women in Korea have a long history of dancing and wearing excessive makeup that goes back centuries. Their definition of masculinity is completely different than of western culture. To them, these men are actually very masculine, manly and sexy. I always see western stans go on and say “these Kpop dudes are defying gender norms!” And I’m sitting here saying, “um...no... they’re not.” That's how men have looked like in Kpop (and Korean culture in general) for generations. That’s what a “normal” Kpop idol is supposed to be and look like. It’s a conservative and a long-established tradition TO THEM. It’s new and progressive to YOU cause you’re culture is different and you completely disregard that difference by saying things like that.

And this mentality then goes on to become very problematic. Because out of ignorance, you view something to be very progressive when it’s not, and then you start imposing much more bigger and more controversial progressive views onto a culture that is the exact opposite, and they frankly, don’t want to hear any of it. Yet you are not aware of that because of your ignorance. So you start meddling in conversations that you don’t belong in, and start saying things that you shouldn’t say in a conservative society, because YOU don’t get it. And that is very offensive for natives of said country. There is a reason Korean Kpop stans who are born and raised in Korean absolutely DESPISE international fans. Because they legit find you offensive. That’s really it. There is no other justification. They think your overstepping your boundaries and outright disrespecting their culture.

This is also very prevalent in the Dizi fandom. People constantly forget that Turkey is actually a very conservative country. Their every tradition is deeply engrained in their culture just as South Korea or any other middle-eastern or Asian country. And so people start critiquing or saying very progressive things that legit don’t even exist in Turkish culture. For example, I’ve seen people go on and say certain cultural practices are “toxic”. And I’m here sitting saying “excuse you?” Like how dare you? You CANNOT analyze a cultural based on YOUR cultural norms and morals. The reality that isn’t even toxic or anything in this culture. It’s how they are. In academics and post-secondary education in psychology and social sciences, they call that Ethnocentrism. Meaning the “evaluation of other cultures according to preconceptions originating in the standards and customs of one's own culture”.

So friends, if you are going to Stan a foreign show, movie, band, singers or whatever, That is all you’re allowed to do. You stan, you listen to the songs, you watch the video, and you walk right out. You don’t get to meddle in sociopolitical affairs of other foreign cultures. Especially cultures like South Korea or Turkey that are legit the EXACT opposite of Western cultures in all aspects. That is not your place. It is offensive to people who are part of those societies. And I’m speaking as someone who is, too.

By meddling and criticizing these cultures you’re basically subtly and indirectly saying that your culture is better than someone else’s. You’re saying your right, and they’re wrong. What’s even worse that you’re from a western, White culture. So from the other side of the world, it looks really bad and it screams imperialism to native people who unfortunately know EXACTLY what that is and how it looks like. They have lived the results imperialism in one way or another. And everyone HATES it. They want to preserve their cultures, and avoid trying to westernize it. So these kind of discussions done by international fans are very triggering for these cultures who have lived through imperialistic agendas. They see a bunch of white people telling a bunch of ethnic/people of colour how they should function and how they should run their culture. It’s HIGHLY offensive. I can’t stress that enough. It basically screams a western superiority complex. The Western idea that we’re great, we’re the best, we need to “fix” and “help” everyone else who we deem needs it.

That’s the EXACT mindset that got you involved in the Middle-East. You thought you knew better. And now, the entire region hates you and wants you to get the hell out of there.

You may not be physically invading these countries, but you’re definitely invading their cultural space by doing everything that I’ve mentioned above. It’s inappropriate.

So please, understand that if you’re going to Stan something foreign, you have to be very aware of everything you say and do. Ignorance causes a lot of problems, as seen in the hella toxic/ offensive Kpop fandoms and even in Dizi fandom as well. An analogy I give is: it’s like you sign an invisible contract. You sign the contract to watch and enjoy said media, and move out once it’s done. That’s it. Anything further than that can be problematic to the very basic existence of these cultures. Understand that these cultures are actually entirely different than your own. People seem to constantly forget that and white-wash and westernize them. Which is why these problems occur in the first place.

So please, do better.

yes ofc!! anyone can write asian characters and i encourage everyone to do so- there aren’t very many of us in modern (or classical) literature

some tips for writing asian characters from an asian gal:

avoid stereotypes!! it’s really easy to default to both physical and personality stereotypes for asian characters...

eyes

‘almond-shaped eyes’ is the dead giveaway that a character is asian, i’m guilty of using the term myself, but that it is actually considered offensive by a lot of people (so i’m gonna go back and edit it out)!!! 

an alternative adjective for smaller eyes is angular. it’s a more neutral word and could describe anyone’s eyes, not just an asian character’s

words for eyes to avoid at all costs: slanted, tilted, etc. they’re pretty racist and are linked back to ugly memories for a lot of asian people who have been bullied for their eyes 

in fact, it isn’t necessary to describe a character’s eyes at all!! there’s nothing wrong with doing so, but there are other ways to indicate a character is asian 

a more expansive look at writing asian eyes 

hair

‘silky/thin jet black hair’ is another common descriptor for asian characters, but it is definitely a generalization... like my hair is light brown and my sister’s hair is super thick and curly 

accents

having an “asian accent” is not a thing. if you’re going to mention a character having an accent the proper way to describe it would be “a chinese accent” or “an indonesian accent” etc. asian accents are v diverse!!!

including accents in the first place is kinda sketch esp if they’re not pertinent to the story

under no circumstances should a non-asian person try to phonetically write in an accent for an asian character

a lot of writers write asian characters as frail and delicate, but that's another generalization that can be harmful

the super smart/tech stereotype is also harmful!! a lot of us are pretty average academically and feel inadequate when we don’t live up to these societal expectations. some are even harassed for being a “bad asian” when they get bad grades or aren’t “intelligent enough” by certain standards

not all asians are the same or have the same features!! we have big eyes, small eyes, we’re short and we’re tall, skinny and thick!! some of us have pale skin and some of us have brown skin!!

consider writing asian characters who are not east asian!! when most people hear asian they typically think of someone from east asia, but that’s excluding so much of asia as a whole!! asia is not just china, japan, + korea. it’s also india, iran, myanmar etc.

words to avoid: oriental, exotic, foreign (as a descriptive word), racial slurs (obviously), 

writing asian parents: just write them like you’d write your own parents unless something about them or their culture is relevant. writing asian parents as strict and conservative with high expectations is a bad look for someone who is not asian and also doesn’t apply to all parents. does it apply to most well that’s for another discussion

including the character’s culture in your writing is great!! just be sure not to force it in there or overdo it bc then it feels tokeny

don’t fetishize your asian characters

if all else fails look to the avatar: the last airbender series for some excellent asian diversity and representation if you need some inspo

i can't speak for anyone else but for me, i'm not a woman but when i am caring for a younger woman i am an unni. honorifics are relational always. i've seen gay men refer to themself as an unni or noona of other people and younger women in general have been using hyung for older men because of the romantic connotations around the word oppa (which is annoying for lots of ppl who have nothing else to call their actual older brother). i would assume that queer people in korea who try to be straight/cis passing just use normative honorifics and make individual decisions on what to be called by indiv people depending on their relationship. a rly nice part about korean culture is that as soon as u meet someone u do hoching jungli/호칭 정리 which is like organizing language? the equivalent of introducing urself and ur pronouns, u say like what ur position is relative to the other person (usually age) and u decide on what to call each other.

the other stuff u talk about like how playful queer language is, that's rly one of my fave topics and i wish i had more info to offer u about how it works in korean! it's just that i'm bad at keeping up with korean online slang cuz it changes so fast and my reading is a little slow.

i enjoyed the crap out of Crazy Rich Asians!

re: representation, at first i had literally zero interest in the film ‘cause i was like, “lmfao what kind of Chinese mother’s wet dream, i don’t give a shit about the Singaporean upper crust.” and to some degree, i still mostly feel that way! it’s a high key “asian” fantasy, but like literally, it’s no different from the royalty fantasy of Princess Diaries or such. plus it’s literally a romcom, so i’m not mad.

but honestly i hung so tightly onto Rachel and her mother. no spoilers, but shiiiiiiit, i wish they had paced the film a little bit better (esp in the beginning) so i got more of the Heart that came from Rachel and her mother. that shit is so fucking important!!!!!!!!!!!! broke my heart too, that entire scene in the bedroom. Constance Wu did such an amazing job with just all her expressions there, how sad she looked for herself but also for her mother and i was literally in so much tears. like, that was the relatable immigrant-mother-and-daughter content i needed.

there’s this weird thing where since “Asian American” representation’s not been done in hollywood in aeons, and the film industries of Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, China, Taiwan etc. are p lit, that we (the “Asian Americans”) can look overseas for “representation.” Except it’s not really representation, is it? it’s not portraying the various experiences of Asians abroad, and even with some shared cultural background, why would a Korean drama “represent” Chinese people? so even as i’m getting tired of all the headlines telling me to watch Crazy Rich Asians for the representation (like sure, you can shove 50 East Asian actors into a single film, but why won’t anyone tell me if it’s actually a good film?), I’m reminding myself that seriously, the political aspect definitely matters.

it’s just overall a silly film with good chunks of feels thrown in! isn’t it so funny that any objectifying-type gazes in this film is aimed solely at the men? What interesting intersectional politics there: the Gaze that has been so thoroughly used by white male-dominated media to sexualize and objectify women (”Oriental” ones, of course) has been flipped on its head to sexualize East Asian men, who have been culturally feminized and emasculated and not allowed to be objects of (hetero)sexual desirability.

plus there’s so much cultural relatability. all the family drama that happens at the dinner table, the brutal criticism adults like to dole out while laughing, the endless list of siblings and cousins, the food and dumpling making

the narrative is so thoroughly female-led! like, Nick was ultimately the only guy that really mattered, and his narrative line was.... not....... very..... . . cohesive.... lfmao. but whatever! Rachel’s cool. Astrid’s fucking?!?!? gorgeous??? i loved the introduction scene and her intrigue. the actual execution of her plotline was more tell than show after that imo, but FUCK if it wasn’t satisfactory at the end. She’s an excellent actress too, holy shit. That scene in the car???? bb. bb. bb.

i love the chick getting married. what a delight the whole way through. just, such a breath of fresh air, and so fucking real lmfao. i love love love asian girls like her. just live your best life, lady.

Michelle Yeoh is a whole legend, and walked the balance between disapproving iron lady and doting vulnerable mother soooooooo well. she’s fucking real as fuck. you’re not meant to hate her, which is a brilliant decision. i loooove the mahjong scene, and how Constance Wu did hurt and vulnerability alongside battle and anger. THE AIRPLANE SCENE. UM. BINCH. BINCH!!! just so well done.

criticisms? pacing of Act I left much to be desired for me, but i do think the ending more than made up for it. Rachel was adorable and it’s sweet to watch her relationships with people develop, but I do think she came off as just kind of generic throughout the first half of the movie. (I liked when she was angry though. That was just real and adorable.)

before the red army was full into the european campaign and the eastern front (who got into auschwitz first? not the americans X°D) 

so like they were more focused on there but after they got germany they also contributed to the pacific campaign by invading manchuria/korea/what was left of the then-japanese empire on land while the americans were dropping the h bombs (I think the operation was from aug. 9th to 20th) after going through mongolia first and at that point that also was a reason why the japanese eventually surrendered as they knew the ussr wasn’t going to play third party anymore

(ps: the whole thing included war crimes on either side of the fence including mass rapes by the soviets and japanese soldiers forcing their own women to kill their children rather than having them surrender and so on) (then again the whole russian front was a feast of horrid shit everywhere and not just on the russians I mean there was cannibalism with the japanese soldiers but there were episodes in leningrad during the siege because people were starving to literal death)

at the end of it as a whole the russians lost a shitload of money financially (it’s estimated that they had spent most of the money the country had made since the revolution) so they were in a fairly bad situation and they were the country that lost more people total as casualties (about twenty millions) and their economy didn’t really go back on track until the sixties and then the cold war started already, we could also discuss for months about the western betrayal but that had happened way before the atomic bombs dropped or the european campaign was over and done so like... unless you want specific info I can’t be more specific XD

How much radfems do you personally know in Korea? What do people tell you when they know you're a radfem?

ok so like just first off i live in america? idk why ppl assume that asians don't...exist in other places like. yes my family is from korea, yes i am korean. but that doesn't make me Korean Authority 101 and fwiw i wouldn't want to live in korea for a multitude of reasons so i can't answer your question the way you probably want,, 

also ive gotten DMs from ppl with weird questions like this as if even if i lived in korea i'm somehow like, this mouthpiece for the culture or as if koreans are some alien species like? i already have to deal with ppl assuming i don't speak english, that i'm not from here, when i go outside fdssgdgds like idk how to impress upon you that it's super highkey annoying to get the online equivalent of ppl saying 'oh! ann yung horse say yo' to me at work, on my blog,,, pls if this is how u guys interact with poc online, don't do this offline. also koreans aren’t like what you see in kpop, kdramas, etc. i have encountered a weird and surprising amt of ppl operating on this assumption and i just. screams. koreans aren’t a monolith, korean culture is heavily patriarchal and this has an impact on the way misogyny is inflicted upon kr women but it’s the minutiae that’s distinct and unique, kr women face (generally) remarkably similar issues to jp women, sea women, white women, hispanic women, etc. such as male violence, restriction of reproductive rights, religiously motivated misogyny (fsr ppl don’t seem to know a lot of koreans, esp korean americans, are at least passively religious? i think they get this assumption bc a lot of cn aren’t, and ime a lot of jp aren’t), sexual assault/harassment, pay gaps, familial issues like second shift, etc. this isn’t to say koreans don’t have unique cultural issues — beauty culture is a big one ime — but rather that there are a lot more similarities than differences when it comes to misogyny across the world. addressing this intersectionally doesn’t mean othering woc or their cultures, imho, but rather recognizing the differences that do exist. idk if this makes sense..          

all that said i put my exp under the cut, i hope it helps! 

my exp is that most younger koreans, esp korean americans, i know are libfems if they are feminists (which isn't really common at all ime, at most it's younger women who buy into libfem beliefs but wouldn't go as far as calling themselves feminist. the ones who do are very much edgy art student socjus types and i've only met them on my college campus lol). i have never ever met any older korean feminist here, and older koreans (men and women) tend to be pretty regressive/conservative in general. i can't count how many times i've been told off, directly or indirectly, by older koreans for how i talk, dress, groom myself, not having a bf/husband, and so on. younger koreans aren't much better, even the 'woke' ones, just the verbage changes.

interacting w/ korean relatives living in or visiting SK, radical feminism is the feminism of choice there but it is not by any means a "normal". feminism, even libfem, is not looked upon highly and being openly feminist is not normal or 'cool' outside of western facing circles and even then you'll probably get backlash from other koreans (usually men) for it. when i talk with my korean friends, fob or koream, about women's issues a lot of the time they might agree on certain things or join in on the ‘men suck!!1!!1′ venting, but once the topic veers towards feminism they're usually pretty withdrawn on it. i think it's interesting that doesn't seem to really change.

the only woman i know who is even vaguely feminist or accepting of me being feminist, let alone a radfem, is my mom surprisingly. maybe bc she's from busan lol. but she's very much unusual for a korean woman and while not feminist let alone radfem, refuses to date or marry men ever again (so ig she's an unintentional separatist queen? ..i'm joking gsdgds) and agrees with me on a lot, but not all, feminist topics like abortion and reproductive rights, women's rights in the workplace, domestic violence (which she/we were victims of, so ofc), etc. even lgb rights she's warmed up to quite a bit since i was a teen. but she is literally the only one, even my halmoni and aunties — who had abusive relationships with men! — think/thought feminism was unnecessary or even useless, despite being strong women in their own right.

what is interesting imo is that trans issues are a little complicated in sk. there are notable trans celebrities, but i’ve only known them to be hsts mtfs. when i came out as a tif, the logical conclusion was i was a super butch who was so gay i wanted to be a man to be ‘normal’ (i mean...not wrong in a way?) and this is the general perception a lot of koreans have of trans ppl. and while most are probably going to be polite about it, i don’t know any koreans, even younger ones, who are super pro trans rights or anything. i’ve met only one korean trans person who was a transbian mtf, but dozens of white trans ppl. that said i do find it interesting koreans seem to at least turn a blind eye to hsts mtfs but there’s still a lot of bristling about homosexuality. again this isn’t that dissimilar to how it is with other cultures, i guess, but it is interesting. 

last disclaimer that this is my exp and maybe other koreans have different experiences? feminist movements seem to be particularly strong in unis/college campuses and ive never been to a korean college/uni. maybe there is a stronger radfem presence there? but the only big radfem groups i know of operate mostly online (like WOMAD), much like in the west. imo radfem is just too radical to really make it mainstream, regardless of the culture.

Thoughts: Had high expectations for this, and didn’t disappoint. Came in knowing nothing really about either topic, and left feeling enlightened about both. Mei Fong was funny, and the dialogue/chemistry between her and Kailing was great in the discussion. It was just quite a fun and informative event in general. Side note, but I attended an event later that day (the Keynote, featuring Hung Huang), which was dreadful and honestly quite offensive to me, as I’m sure it was to many others in the audience. She was disrespectful (don’t remember what she even talked about, but what I remember being most pissed about is what she said about feminists in China), seemed to have no knowledge of anything, and full of BS. I walked out early cause I was so pissed off, and Kailing did as well, and we shared a rant in the elevator and lobby about it afterwards LOL. So yeah, Kailing is great.
