A Ferocity of Bees is now live!

Arketh was fast asleep when the call came. It wasn’t a call for her, exactly. More a raw and lonely keening, a thing of instinct, to be heard by anyone who would listen. Arketh just happened to be one of the few who could.

She saw the crack of lightning and the lash of rain, felt a terrifying fall as the wind screamed, and understood that this was the mourning-cry of a hivequeen. The wyrdness crackled and roiled, filling her with a terrible fizzing need to move and see and do. Images of broken branches and hard, unyielding rocks tumbled into Arketh’s sleeping mind, splintering the nightmare she was in – the one about the open tundra full of twisted shapes that stalked her every step – but her body refused to wake.

So, Arketh did the thing she wasn’t meant to do anymore. She slipped out of her body.

Imagine an elf is given a job to do at a hivefolk institution. The hivequeen thinks elves don't need bathroom breaks, since she is planning to lay her eggs in them and have her young eat their way out from the inside, a process that will certainly be fatal. But

Ah, this is a common misconception! Fluid retention in the host can actually be beneficial for the development of offspring, though this will also be supplemented regularly ex vivo, i.e. once the eggs have been laid, in order to maintain hydronastic equilibrium. Elves are typically preferred over other humanoids not only for their ability to go on for long periods without bathroom breaks but also due to their clean lifestyle and habits, as well as their ability to live on for decades after all brain activity and other non-autonomous bodily functions have ceased.

he does what any obsessive and in love guy does, i'll leave that to your imagination!

mother is the overmind/hivequeen. she can see, hear, and feel everything the little blooms and nurse blooms experience. i think i talked about how their hivemind work briefly a while back. mother can view anyone (or everyone at the sametime) anytime she wants (which is almost ALL the time), regardless if the blooms asks her not to. the nurses can be selective when sharing information with the hivemind. the helper blooms dont have autonomy over their privacy.

sonny makes the active decision to go "offline" from the hivemind because of privacy and a little bit of freedom. none of the nurses except for celia actually likes being monitored their entire life by mother. its suffocating, its isolating, and its just bad parenting!

he just wants a little privacy when watching and thinking about you. 🌻👁👁

Potential Short Story idea

This was inspired by a sci-fi story my boyfriend reads on Reddit. Hive Queen. And I think maybe someday I’d like to take it somewhere. But for now - it simply exists.  “ All my life I've been called an alien. And I suppose that's close enough to the truth. But there's something more to it, something no one's ever outwardly wondered about -- so I haven't gone into detail before. Maybe today's the day for this newness. This ache of blending in day after day and just trying to pass well enough that you'll all allow me to go about my business without any of you daring to stop me. Daring to strike up a conversation. Though - I've figured that part out in all honesty. I know which words to say when and who should be looking before I begin to speak. That way it appears like I have friends and family and a purpose for being in this space -- other than the real one of spying on all of you and your rituals. Taking this information back to the hive -- EVERYTHING I DO is for MOTHER! And the speaker would be sooooo proud of me for figuring out how to speak without impeeding my actual functions. I digress though, you and your human mothers are nothing like us and our queen mother. You all speak and believe yourselves to be good at it -- so the speakers make no sense to you either. And are of little consequence to your existence, aside from the chittering. Oh god, if you'd ever heard the chittering - you'd never feel safe again. I blend in with each and every little aspect of this place because MOTHER and the others have asked me to. Because I am the right size to be human. Because I have a similar heartbeat to human. Because I understand my mission soooooo completely that nothing could distract me - not you and your tiny dog always wanting to pee on the taco truck. Not you with your camera and sunsets and sunrises and beaches and flowers and bees - and occasionally even others like me. Not you and the incredible music you play upon some of the biggest stages in the world night after night - and you know what - when the world implodes I'm going to save you. Because the Galaxy has not heard enough of you yet. Not yet. Not even you. Day after day, I drink coffee like oil in public spaces you believe I need things like sleep and caffeine - or even food. I find the crowded spaces in the park and sunbathe - which does feel good but is completely unneccessary as a member of the hive. I even ask you about your tiny children and their adorable clothes because everyone on this planet is obessesd with things in miniuture. Like babies and dogs and dolls and food too. Mother would never accept you -- any of you because of this. Without size there is no power. And the hive is a large galaxy entity - we must always have size and power on our side - you never know when war or enemies or science will dare to end us all. And I know you and your people will never make sense of these words - but someone gave me a look as though they could tell that I am of the hive not of the Earth. And I felt inclined to share. That they are in fact correct. Hive is the only home I'll ever know. But there are aspects of Earth that will be remembered for all of eternity when Mother decides to take over.  “
