We Made It!!

Welcome to the class blog for SCHC 400: Understanding Health Disparities through history, culture, and policy. 

Students and faculty from the University of South Carolina will be in Cape Town and Johannesburg South Africa from May 13-29.  This blog will serve as a record of our experiences and a way for students to share the rich culture, history, and public health related insights they encounter along the way. 

Tuesday May 13 - Day 1

I am excited to report that, after departing from various locations across the US, all students have successfully arrived in Cape Town.  The key to avoiding jet lag is to stay busy and awake until the local evening time so that you can adjust to the new time zone (Cape Town is +6 hours from Columbia, SC).  The earliest arriving students joined the faculty on a sunset hike to Kloof Corner (a hike the faculty had done the day before when they were trying to stay awake and adjust to the new time). 

The hike offered amazing views of Lion’s Head, Table Mountain, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Cape Town skyline.

After the hike, we returned to meet the later arriving students for pizza before getting some much-needed rest.

Wednesday May 14 – Day 2

After an orientation session in the morning, the students had a free afternoon to explore the city.  Some students took a bus tour of the city and stopped to explore the World of Birds & Monkey Jungle:

Another group decided to take a scenic boat tour of the V&A Waterfront harbor. 

Everyone was then treated to some delicious, traditional African cuisine which included:  crocodile, ostrich, lamb, springbok, chicken, and various vegetarian options. 

We are off to a busy start and have a very full itinerary of amazing academic and cultural experiences planned.  Over the next 15 days, students will take turns contributing to this blog.  They will provide background information, their personal observations/reflections, and pictures/videos from that day’s activity.  We look forward to sharing our experiences.

a list of david/patrick scenes i desperately wish we saw in schitt's creek that i'll never shut the fuck up about the fact that we didn't get to see:

holding hands; literally the closest thing we got to the two of them holding hands was their handshake two (2) seconds after they met

going off of the two of them holding hands, imagine a scene where patrick kisses david's knuckles to calm him down

ANY scene in the back room because i know so many tender moments took place behind that curtain (also sex, but, like, think of how many times david flipped the sign to CLOSED solely to hold patrick and kiss him so fucking softly to remind him during their busy days that he still sees him and loves him and appreciates him

Who’s more ticklish?

patrick is more ticklish, but david's reactions are more dramatic

What kind of tickles are they sensitive to?

david can sort of ignore soft, light tickles bc they feel more relaxing than ticklish, so you have to be a little rough to make him actually laugh. patrick, however, is sensitive to just about any touch.

Which role (lee/ler) does each of them hold?

it ends up being pretty even, because patrick is more likely to start tickling david first, but david is a strong believer in revenge and/or fighting back relentlessly.

How did they discover each others’ ticklishness?

the first time they made out, david accidentally tickled patrick, who proceeded to giggle, go pink, and apologize. david thinks he fell for him in that moment, bc who is that fucking cute?? patrick didn't realize david was ticklish until the second time they had sex, because david's hips are ticklish and patrick grabbed onto them for leverage.

Who’s more likely to instigate a tickle fight?

patrick, definitely. david still isn't used to the playful, romantic side of relationships at first and therefore never really thinks to do things like that?? later in their relationship, it might even out more.

How often do they tickle each other?

pretty often, and it obviously gets more common as they move in together and take new steps in their relationship. ever since they started living together, patrick likes to tickle david awake in the mornings, and then david usually gets his revenge in the evenings before they go to sleep. it's a nice little routine that they repeat at least once a week.

Who’s the least likely to ask for tickles?

david would ask for the light, relaxing sort of tickles on his back because it feels good, but he just isn't a huge fan of being on the receiving end of actual tickling. patrick would only ask in the context of encouraging david to be more romantic/playful/spontaneous, but he would never directly say that he likes/wants it.

Grocery shopping for the first time together, Patrick + David??? 🥰🥺

i didn't know if you wanted this to be a headcanon or a fully fleshed-out work. i decided on a headcanon, though, so hopefully that's okay ! it's just what i was inspired by <3

this has been marinating in my inbox for... awhile, to say the least, but i imagine it being a new experience for both of them for varying reasons:

growing up, patrick went grocery shopping with his mother and father every weekend. it as a tradition in the brewer household; each sunday morning before brunch, they'd head over to their locally owned supermarket and purchase enough food to last them through the next sunday.

david, on the other hand, has never gone grocery shopping before. sure, he's ran to pick up a few miscellaneous items for patrick's apartment here and there, but he's never had the experience of going shopping for more than a couple of lemons or another box of off-brand cheerios.

so, when david and patrick go together for the first time, david isn't sure how to go about finding and purchasing all of the ingredients necessary for a meal. patrick, on the other hand, has a difficult time dwindling down his shopping habits from him and his parents to just him and david. it's only one less person, yes, but it makes a world of a difference to patrick nonetheless.

sure thing!! it's complicated - it isn't really "winning" if david causes patrick some accidental physical harm that ends the tickle fight abruptly, otherwise he would be the winner. david does fight like it's life or death, but patrick is just stronger and able to get the upper hand, so he wins bc david easily taps out.
