...I have a trick for you🤭

It's a trick because I'm not sure this will ever see the light on the day, but since some of you lovely readers (cough cough) of Back and Forth 'pestered' me a bit about Spectre deserving a dog... I might be toying with an idea of her and Steve volunteering at a shelter...

It goes wonderfully. Because Spectre didn't have a terrible childhood with any trauma. Right?

Broad palms framed your face and filled your vision, Steve’s worried features all you could see.

Five things you can see, you reminded yourself, and it would have been difficult to find something to look at with only him in your vision, but it was so much and so enough: the gorgeous blue of his eyes with a speckle of green, his ridiculously long eyelashes, the faintest shadow of stubble already growing, the little mole on his right cheek that had always made you want to kiss it, feeling it might make him smile, the plush lips, seemingly as soft and firm as the words they spoke.

“Look at me. You are most definitely not pathetic. And you don’t have to talk about whatever it is, but let me help you. Somehow. We need to slow your breathing.”

Your head was spinning, the world closing in, too large but too tight around your ribcage, shallow short breaths in hopes to drink in air.

Four things you can hear, echoed in your head: the velvety quality of his voice, the gentlest command and explanation at once, soothing warmth seeping into his words as it does from his skin, palms still holding you, a faint sound of barking, hot breath on your cheek as the darkness you chose to hide in enveloped you, a hot wet touch of the dog’s tongue on your cheek, her icy nose nudging your temple and the world was so so enormous around you and you were too tiny and so lost int it and she was warm and soft and safe-

Tears prickled in your eyes, rolling down your burning cheeks as you closed them shut. “Sadie.”

Thumbs gently rubbed over your cheekbones, brushing away your tears.

“Breathe with me, sweetheart. In… hold… out… hold on," he whispered, urgency laced with comforting authority leading you out from the bad place, towards the light. "Doing so good. Now in… hold it for a bit with me… and out, yeah, that’s it. Now, who’s Sadie?”

His voice was so painfully soft you couldn’t see to stop more tears from spilling over.
