I’m nini and I’m using this blog to share my journey learning German (A2) and find other language learners! I started studying German years ago but never got past the basics. I’m now studying with more intent and creating an intensive study plan for myself. i’m looking for langblr blogs to be mutuals with especially those posting about german and german culture!

i really need to find a way to study from books and shows.. i’m watching 2 shows in german, listening to german podcasts and audiobooks, but have no comfortable way of learning from them. just listening doesn’t seem like enough

oh wow i would love to move to germany someday! if you don't mind me asking, where are you from and what culture shocks did you experience?

I’m from the us (northeast)! I moved here last september. I honestly can’t think of too many culture shocks but I was pretty familiar with the area already as I’ve visited several times before.

I think mostly getting used to different food brands (hard for me) and also German meal habits. Breakfast and dinner here is usually just bread and maybe with some kind of spread. With lunch being the one hot meal a day. I love having a hot breakfast, so that’s something I’m missing. I don’t have my own place to stay yet but when I do I plan on buying things so I can make myself more foods I like and miss.

LUCKILY FOR ME THO! i love bread. and potatoes. and now i feel like i have so much more access than before. There are bakeries EVERYWHERE and it’s so cheap. I love fresh baked pretzels and now they’re just a 3min walk away <3

I also am still getting used to transportation, and the fact I can travel across the whole country on a train for like 30€ or less. Country-wide transportation is a blessing. Most of the surprising things have been positive like this!!

oh right, and everything is closed on sunday’s (except some restaurants?). It’s really nice now actually but at first I was??? bc that would mean Saturday is the only day to go do anything for people who work M-F. I couldn’t imagine getting anything done since in the US, I’d get home from work well after 6pm and lots of places would be closed. But Germans have a pretty good work/life balance so I imagine that’s a lot less of an issue here.

I am nonbinary and have been learning German for awhile now and I am looking to move to german in the next two years. As someone who is nonbinary what has your experience in Germany been? I have heard mixed things about how accepting they are of nonbinary folks.

hi! sorry about this (very) late reply as i’ve been off tumblr for a while, but i’d be happy to tell you my experience!

Overall, I’ve had no issues. I am more masculine/neutral presenting, and only people close to me (and my online profiles) actually know I identify as nonbinary. When I started working in Germany, I wasn’t very comfortable sharing my identity as I’ve heard of the mixed feelings for nonbinary people. I was lucky my job had a large number of queer employees, and I could hear how they talked about gender. Many seemed perfectly fine with trans folks, but I’m not sure how many even knew of non-binary as a term. I didn’t share I was non-binary until I was talking about it with a coworker from the US. That’s when I was told there was some talk among them wondering if I was trans, but no one asked me about it.

I think it will depend on what city you’re in & who you interact with. I’ve never had a stranger ask me or give me trouble, as people tend to mind their business and mostly just stare (but Germans stare at everyone, no matter what, you get used to it). If you have any medical needs or take hormones, there are doctors you can go to, it’s just a matter of finding the right one - likely in bigger cities.

i haven’t been able to sit down and study for a while as we had a guest staying for ~3 weeks and then i went to berlin. being back it’s feeling so hard to do more than my minimum 😢

goal for tomorrow is to work on 1 of 2 things: next unit in my german course, or writing in german

hello !! i used to want to be a fashion designer! I remember looking into fashion design schools when i was like 10. At some point as a teenager that switched to just art in general

I do also knit! I haven’t knitted anything in a while but I decided to try knitting socks soon. I’m currently crocheting a few things. Actively working on an amigurumi as a commission, and helping someone test their pattern for a hoodie

3. i’d say my favorite part about studying german (or anything really) is when something clicks ya know? when that thing that’s been confusing you suddenly MAKES SENSE ! recently i understood how past tense works in german and now i’m practicing using it. i have been so excited about it
