You know what my favorite thing about kamen rider zero one is? Both Horobi and Jin have real weapons that they barely ever use. Jin has a 1911 that he most likely stole from a cop, and Horobi just has a katana hanging on his back like a fucking weeb

i've gone on and on about this point on many different shows and movies lately but stepping back from it there really is such a huge problem with modern kamen rider stories having too MUCH forgiveness. Like that seems a really stupid thing to say about a kid's show but when it's a kid's show dealing head-on with the kind of topics it is, it's like... you need to set a limit, here. You need to set some kind of standard for kids

in 01 Thouser is forgiven for his warmongering and ZAIA continues on as normal. Horobi forgives Aruto and HIDEN continues on as normal. In Beyond Generations Hongou forgives the nazi scientist for destroying his life and the lives of many others while his son forgives him for completely abandoning him. Similarly George in Revice and Neon in Geats forgive their fathers for doing some truly awful shit to them and then just abandoning them, and all this happens at the drop of the hat with swirling emotional music, and it's like-- where does this stop? It's good to educate kids about the merits of forgiveness and accepting faults but it's also important to give them standards of where things go too far, where there are things they should stand up to and people they don't need to waste every second trying to make amends with.

It's not a difficult thing and not something Kamen Rider hasn't done before; Faiz's Kaixa and Ryuki's Ouja were characters that the main protagonists tried to understand and communicate with but got taken advantage of at every turn because of that, and there's no reward for their kindness -- their pain only stops when those characters die. And these are stories about the merits of kindness and communication in a world that makes that difficult!! It's what makes those stories so much stronger and what makes those characters so much more memorable! There's going to be people you can't win over and you're going to have to walk away from and I think what's completely lost me about Kamen Rider lately is how toothless it is in this respect. It wants to educate its audience about complex subjects but then answers it with a 'you should forgive everyone' blanket statement. It's just bad storytelling and it's frustrating to see it do this time and time again

I came across a 01 MV and remembered a theory I had after watching ZI-O x 01…..

Because Aruto used a ForceRiser that’s only been used by Humagears before I thought that they were going to reveal that Aruto was a Humagear later in the series.

Here’s the how I thought Humagear Aruto was gonna go.

During the Daybreak Incident, the actual Aruto died alongside the Soreo Humagear

In his despair of losing the last of his family, Korenosuke created a Humagear in Aruto's likeness

But in his desire to see his Grandchild grow Korenosuke somehow managed to make the Aruto Humagear in a way that he was almost completely identical to a human

Knowing the Aruto Humagear would be shut down due to the laws following Humagears taking the appearance of a dead person, Korenosuke hid the actual Aruto’s death from everyone and gave the Humagear memories of Aruto surviving

The only other person to know the secret would be Gai, who publicly reveals this secret to Aruto and the world to turn the public against Aruto & Humagears even more.

Gai finds a legal loophole that takes Aruto’s position in Hiden Intelligence away since the actual Aruto Hiden is dead

Of course, Aruto would have an existential crisis over learning that he was just a replacement.

Izu manages to help Aruto accept himself by finding a hidden file left by Korenosuke in which he apologizes to Aruto for not saying anything and so on.

At first Horobi & Co. try to convert Aruto to their side but they later mark him as a traitor to their kind

All enemies try to capture and reverse engineer Aruto because of how human-like he is.

After getting Zero Two he starts going around with the Humagear headphone things on him

I just realized that this is basically the same as Neon’s reveal in Kamen Rider Geats….

this week, i spent a lot of time in the mangaplus app.

01. bug ego / バグエゴ by ONE (story), shitara kiyoto (art) demographic: seinen genre: comedy, mystery, supernatural rating: 10/10 summary: the new guy in town, hitsujiya meets classmate kukudou, a weird kid with an even weirder notebook detailing various "bugs" in the universe -- phenonema where a certain konami code of actions (e.g. pressing vending machine buttons in a certain order) yield strange outcomes. hitsujiya gets addicted to these bugs, and it's all fun and games -- until it isn't. notes: easy favorite of the week. chapter two is a goddamn masterpiece. ONE, i beg -- follow your heart. stop writing battle shonen and write more of whatever this is.

02. ruri dragon / ルリドラゴン by masaoki shindo demographic: shonen genre: slice of life, iyashikei rating: 8/10 summary: A half-human, half-dragon girl lives a normal life as best she can while her dragon powers awaken. notes: it's just really charming. you will be healed by this.

03. ichi the witch / madan no ichi / 魔男のイチ by nishi osamu (story), usazaki shiro (art) demographic: shonen genre: fantasy, action rating: 7/10 summary: Ichi is a talented hunter who lives in solitude on the mountain. One day, he saves the world's strongest witch from harm by using his hunting skill to defeat the king of magic -- and in the process, accidentally becomes a witch himself. notes: as might be expected from a team up between the creator of mairimashita! iruma-kun and the artist of act-age, the highlight of this work is the imaginative and diverse character designs. 20 or so chapters in, i think this work has a lot of potential. it'd be so cool and fun if wsj execs kept this one around.

04. asura's verdict / asura no sata / アスラの沙汰 by unohana utsugi demographic: shonen genre: drama, psychological, gore rating: 3.5/10 summary: Inspired by his late mother's teachings, Asura tries to live life with a smile, even as terrible things happen to him, because the universe will send people where they belong. One day, his world view is upended when he's presented with the mysterious power to send people to hell himself. notes: Jury's out on whether this is headed in a Death Note or a Brutal direction. It seems like it'll be the former, but I don't think the writing will yield as interesting a social commentary as DN.

05. apple by amano youichi (art), shirai kaiu (story) demographic: shonen genre: action, gore rating: 7.5/10 summary: Captured by the president, assassin Apple must escape by any means necessary to enact his revenge. notes: i think this story would be more satisfying with more pages or serialization. that said, the assassin's powers and the plot twist about president bruno were really fucking cool. for whom this is relevant -- the story comes from the writer of the promised neverland.

06. beyond the screen / glass-goshi no koibito / ガラス越しの恋人 by yano keito demographic: shonen genre: drama, romance rating: 6.5/10 summary: Shoko meats Ukai on a dating app, and everything's going great -- until they realize they're in parallel worlds. notes: short and sweet oneshot with satisfying conclusions for both leads. the art wasn't my favorite.

07. the mountain of remains on planet triangle / sankakuboshi no horobi no yama / さんかく星の滅びの山 by togawa harutarou demographic: shonen genre: sci-fi rating: 7/10 summary: Tongari and the other triangles live peacefully on a remote planet, scavenging the buried bones of a previous civilization. One day, a human rises from the ash. notes: aww that's cute hahaha haha ha--... hey what the fuck.

08. takahashi from the bike shop / jitenshaya-san no takahashi-kun / 自転車屋さんの高橋くん by matsumushi arare demographic: josei (kind of. this was a web comic picked up by torch magazine) genre: romance rating: 8/10 summary: 30-year-old Panko struggles through the tumult of office life. After a particularly rough week, even her bicycle breaks down. Luckily, a stranger, Takahashi, helps her out. As she encounters him again and again, she finds her world brightening. notes: this manga has a lot that i love: adult cast with adult problems, quirky art, chemistry between the leads, lovable delinquent characters, and bicycles.

The latest Ride Kamens seems to be based on Horobi (which I guess means either there is no "1 per series" rule like we assumed, or Takahashi's preferences take precedence, which I will only accept if we get an NB Naki Expy as well), but I saw a lot of people speculate that he seems like he has a hint of Snipe in him.

This lead me to going back over the others revealed so far to see if any had dual references, only to find that apparently the KR wiki claims Kamen Rider Haruma is based on Phoenix from Wizard, and not Kuga like I assumed. The fact that his pose is having one of his hands up like Haruto showing off a ring is compelling (and the idea that he's sun-associated because Phoenix was finally defeated by being thrown into the sun is very funny).

I'm surprised to see horobi but I guess 01 is a recent and very popular series that takahashi wrote so why not throw him in. actually the aesthetic of the 01 riders translates particularly well to the ride kamens aesthetic too

I think the first time I saw info about haruma was on the wiki so I didn't have a chance to think he looked like kuuga. he does a bit, but once I looked at him next to phoenix I was like "oh sure." and giving a guy a sun theme bc the guy he's based on was kicked into the sun is extremely good

Destroyed my health last night, staying up all night to watch a Kamen Rider 01 marathon on TokuSHOUTsu's YouTube.

Maybe it's the sleep deprivation talking, but what was that last episode fight? Going on and on how if Aruto and Horobi fight, they lose---the world loses. Since then, I keep thinking about how when the first Kingdom Hearts IV trailer came out, people started comparing similar images and wondering if the 2022 KH4 trailer was referencing the 2019 Kamen Rider 01. So I'm finally watching that Kamen Rider, and the final fight is suspiciously similar to 2010's Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep's X-blade forging battle between Ventus and Vanitas, where if they fight, then the heroes lose because the world would be in peril. Coincidence? Or still severely sleep deprived???

Ok, let's break this down for everyone because it's really funny. Aruto, the MC of kamen rider 01 has a robot secretary waifu named Iz. They have an AI in a satellite called Zea, which provides Iz with intel to support Aruto. The villains, Metsuboujinrai.net, are robots who serve The Ark, and want the extermination of humanity. The Ark is an AI made to help people and guide humanity, but a techbro CEO named Gai Amatsu, who is kind of like Seto Kaiba, injects The Ark with 'the evils of humanity' and takes control of robots to destroy a city. In the show's opening, Iz has a moment where she becomes evil for a second, eyes glowing red, the telltale in-show sign of someone being taken over by The Ark. This was in there because 'it looked cool' and not thought about it. Then COVID happened, and there were like 4 episodes of recaps in a row as they worked out the plot of the rest of the show as there were new restrictions developing. The Ark (no physical person form still, it just sort of exists digitally and in a little core in some ruins), then suddenly has it's own robot secretary, Az. The Ark steps into combat to eliminate Aruto by hijacking other robots with the Ark-Zero form, and is defeated by kicking it's ass with the new 02 form and then replicating the ending of Robotics;Notes DaSH. Az, now without a master, walks around with fancy Ark Gear, taking advantage of people with emotions in turmoil to somehow turn them into a new coming of The Ark, one attempt is the tv series finale (which rules), and then the film (which also rules), and then in her third attempt she gets shot and killed by some guy and the story ends. - AND THEN THE GOOFY CROSSOVER, 'GEMNS: THE PRESIDENTS' HAPPENS. Gai Amatsu gets a robot secretary, named Rin. Y'know, because Aruto has one. We skip a bunch of details, but Gai and Kuroto Dan have a fight over who will be in charge of the company. And The Ark suddenly takes over Rin. Because the Ark is back now, because it is just 'pure malice and will never go away'. So Gai teams up with The Ark. And Rin is just The Ark Vessel now. AND THEN OUTSIDERS HAPPENS. THE ARK IS NOW A PROTECTOR OF HUMANITY. THE ARK BORROWS THE BODIES OF BOTH HOROBI AND RIN BECAUSE SURE WHY NOT.
