Where the spirit meets the bones https://ift.tt/CdnQuWO by aethrax “So, have you thought about my offer?” He asked, leaning close to her. It took all of her self-restraint to take a step back. “I have.” She said. “And?” “I’ll have to impolitely decline.” ——— Hermione Granger is supposedly a spinster, but she keeps declining every marriage proposal, because she’s in love with Ron Weasley. Too bad for her, since after breaking her heart 4 years ago, he now returns, with a fiancée in tow. Draco Malfoy never intended to find a wife during his short visit to London, but when he finds himself more and more in the company of Miss Granger, he can’t help but form a plan in his head; the two of them pretend to be engaged, so he can stay in peace, and she can make Weasley jelous. The Monarch of the Glen!
Glencoe is one of the most famous and historic glens in Scotland. The first historical figure connected with Glencoe was Fingal, one of the greatest Celtic heroes and leader of the Feinn, warriors of Gaelic mythology.
The MacDougall clan were in possession of Glencoe from the 11th century until their collapse in 1308 when they sided with John Balliol against Robert the Bruce. In a gesture of thanks for his support, Robert the Bruce gifted Glencoe to Angus Og, clan chief of the MacDonalds. There then followed a period of relative calm until 1501, when disputes arose between the Glencoe MacDonalds and the Argyll Campbells, continuing into the Scottish Wars of the Covenant
The final chapter in this tragedy began when King William Ill offered a pardon to all Highland clans who had fought against him on condition that they took the oath of allegiance by 1 January 1692. Maclain, MacDonald Clan Chief, reluctantly agreed to take the oath, but mistakenly went to Inverlochy instead of Inveraray. He finally reached Inveraray on January 6th, well after the deadline.
MacDonald mistakenly believed that he and his clan were now safe, however a force had already been assembled at Inveraray. Despite showing hospitality to the Campbell force for 10 days, they would go on to massacre the MacDonalds. A monument to the fallen MacDonalds is situated in the Glencoe village.
Tumblr media
Over the next few centuries ownership of Glencoe passed through several hands and in 1935 the National Trust for Scotland bought 12,800 acres of the glen

My Favorite Books of 2022
I think I did decently well at reading in 2022 and the book I'm reading now, I'm not anticipating finishing before the end of the year (it's The Stand by Stephen King), so now is the best time to post about my favorite books of the year.
This year, I read 80 books. 27 of those were the manga Blue Exorcist, and I'm never sure about whether to really count those in my book count, but I am going to count them as 1 big book for the purpose of this list! So, that takes me down to like 54 books.
So, let's go through my list each month, and pick out favorite book(s) from each month! Maybe I won't have a favorite from some months...
Bold means it was a good I really enjoyed! I
I'm going to hide the list under a keep reading line because otherwise this post might be too long for some people!
January
Dune Messiah -Frank Herbert
A Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin
Memoirs and Misinformation - Dana Vachon and Jim Carrey
February
Mergers and Acquisitions - Dana Vachon
March
A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet - Becky Chambers
Everyone In This Room Will Someday Be Dead - Emily Austin

April
I read nothing

Salem's Lot - Stephen King

December
Circe - Madeline Miller
Babel - R.F. Kuang
Taaqtumi: An Anthology of Arctic Horror Stories - Aviaq Johnston, et al
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo - Taylor Jenkins Reid
Hell Of A Book - Jason Mott
Picking an actual favorite from these is too hard. I read so many great books this year, and obviously some months I read better than others. Actually, I would probably bold more than I have, but I felt bad about bolding more than like 2 per month, though I did do that in like September.
There were only really like 5 or 6 that I didn't really like, but pushed my way through.
I'm quietly aiming for 100 books next year, but I'm not gonna force myself for that, because whenever I aim for goals like that, it just takes the fun out of reading, so I'm going to set my goal at like 5 books and anything more than that is going to be a win for me!

Note
If I had an ultimate I'd probably be the Ultimate Historian just so I can terrorize everyone with states and capital questions because I already do that shit.
What's the capital of Washington? Olympia!
What's the capital of Louisiana? Baton Rouge!
What's the capital of New Jersey? Trenton!
And the best part of it is that my friends don't know SHIT about states and capitals and I'm just a menace so if I had that knowledge I could go like "What was the exact day, month, place and year that the witch trials commenced?" (Apparently March 1, 1692, Salem, Massachusetts)
And nobody would know.
I would be so fucking unstoppable
LMAO

Summary: Agatha can still recall the rush of excitement that used to fill her chest whenever you held her hand, even after nearly 330 years. She can also recall the bitter pain of leaving you behind when she was forced to leave the sanctity of her Salem home. She’s spent her time growing wiser and stronger, but a part of her still longs for that familiar safe feeling once again. She doesn’t know how or when she’ll find you, but this definitely wasn’t how she imagined your reunion might go…
Warnings: Angst. Unfortunately, this is pretty much all angst, & mentions of pregnancy (nothing detailed/descriptive)
Word count: 2,857

March 1692
It was early March and the snow had long since melted, providing new, rejuvenated earth for the local town of Salem to start its farming season. You had both grown since the first time you had met, but very little about your relationship had changed in that time. Well, not much was different from then, except for the stolen touches and occasional kisses that only you and the trees knew about. Aside from that, things were the same, and the same was perfect for both of you.
However, something felt off as you approached Agatha this afternoon as the dew-wet Agatha’s shoes. She didn’t notice, however, till after she had excitedly wrapped her arms around your waist and kissed you with the widest grin on her face. That grin, however, fell as she gazed down at your watery eyes and trembling lips.
“My love, what’s happened?” she inquired, her hands cupping your cheeks and frantically wiping away fallen tears with her thumbs. You held her hands against your face, leaning into the warmth that they held. You took in a breath, letting out a bitter, watery laugh as you averted your eyes from her.
“I guess you were right, all those years ago,” she looked at you with worried confusion as her stomach fell.“There was a boy in town, who thinks I’m ‘very sweet’, as you put it,” you looked away from her, closing your eyes as new tears rolled down your face. Agatha stood stunned, unsure of what to do with herself. Her mouth felt dry, followed by her throat. She bit her lip and on a whim decided she needed to calm down. She leaned forward, nudging you to face her as she kissed your forehead.
“Honey, what happened?” she asked again. You looked like you were about to break, but you told her.
“Adam Gate, a cattleman in town. He’s a reputable man and he’s helped my father for years. We practically grew up side by side-”
“Love, you’re rambling”
“He asked me to marry him,”
Agatha felt her heart shatter there on the spot. She swallowed, though her throat was still dry, and shook her head. She took a step away from you, her arms wrapping around herself, though she wished they belonged to you. You stared up at her with hollow, wet eyes, like you pitied her.
“No, you can't,” she practically laughed at the notion, but you shook your head.
“I have to, Agatha. If I don’t I’d be a disgrace. I’d ruin my family, my father-”
“Do you love him?” she bit back, practically pleading to you with every fiber in her. You sniffed and shook your head, reaching out to trace your fingertips along her jaw.
“Not one bit,” you said with the smallest laugh that broke the witch even more. “I’ve only ever loved you,” you laughed again as you cried harder. You were bordering on something similar to hysteria.
“God, I don’t want any of this. I don’t want to be Adam’s wife, Mrs. Gate. I just want you,” you confessed. Agatha felt tears spilling from her own eyes now as she gripped your hand, squeezing it tight.
“Then don’t do it. Run away with me instead,”
“No. no, I can’t leave my family. If I leave, suspicions will be raised, and if they knew I left with a woman-” You shivered at the thought of what would happen to your family. She shook your head and moved past that. “You can't leave your coven. You still have so much to learn and I can’t take that away from you,” you insisted, your voice wavering, yet serious.
“Who cares about the coven? They don’t really want me,”
“You won’t admit it, but you need them, Aggi,” something changed in your eyes. Something almost warning filled them. It was an unnerving look on you. “I know about the dark magic, Agatha,” The witch felt every fiber in her tense.
“How did you-”
“You fell asleep while reading, and I peeked at your book. I- I didn’t understand it all, but from what I could comprehend, it wasn’t pretty,” Agatha was the one to avert her gaze now. “If you’re going to study whatever that is, you need your coven. They can keep you safe,” you pleaded, wrapping your arms around her as you sniffed.
“I’m learning it so that I can keep you safe,” she murmured. You looked up at her with sad, sunken eyes.
“But I can’t protect you, Agatha. I can’t protect you from yourself. Not when you’re learning magic like that,” Agatha bit her lower lip, then wrapped her arms around you, burying your face in her hair as she squeezed you tight.
“Then what do we do?” she asked after a long, drawn-out silence.
“I don’t think there's much that can be done,” you admitted and Agatha winced at the brokenness in your voice.
“You could stay. Run away to the woods with me. We both know you could,” she suggested again, but you shook your head.
“No, Agatha. That would put my family at risk, and I can’t do that to them,” you insisted. “You know that,”
“They would never know! We could leave in the dark and I could erase any memories of you, it would be like nothing ever happened,” she offered in desperation, only for you to move back from her with an appalled look in your eyes. She immediately regretted the idea and shook her head. “Darling, I didn’t-”
“But you did, Agatha, you did,”
“No- I just meant that-”
“You meant what you said, Agatha,” you insisted with a hard expression. “You know you did,” She faltered at that, sighing as she covered her face with her hands. She took in a breath and shook her head.
“You're right. You're right, and I’m sorry,” she admitted, massaging her temple as she squeezed her eyes shut. There was a drawn-out pause as Agatha collected her thoughts and you waited. She watched as you moved from her, sitting with your back against one of the oak trees that lined the clearing. She sighed heavily and moved beside you. You didn’t look at her, choosing to lick at the grass between your fingers instead.
“What do we do now?” she asked you. You shrugged your shoulders, picking at bits of foliage around you, collecting them in your hands as you pondered everything in a daze.
“I don’t know, Agatha. I really don’t know,” you murmured. Agatha nodded, biting the inside of her cheek. She scooted closer to your side and nudged you against her shoulder. You gave in, closing your eyes at the warmth of your touch. Then, you cried again. There was no avoiding it, you both knew that. Agatha kissed the top of your head, breathing in the wildflower smell of your hair as tears rolled down her cheeks once more.
1693
She hadn’t meant to do it. Her intention wasn’t to kill, it never had been. But when all that magic was being shot into her, killing her, her power countered it. She recalled the painful burn of her coven’s magic turned against her. But she was soon comforted by the warmth and inviting feeling of the magic that belonged to the elders became her own. She knows she should have been scared of it. She should regret it now.
She was supposed to feel remorse and regret for killing her superiors. They had nurtured her, taught her, and loved her in their sick way. They had been the only family she ever knew, and she slaughtered them without a single wave of her hand. But as she ran her thumb over the brooch in her hand, the cold, smooth obsidian and marble carving warmed in her clutch, she could only feel content. It was a cutthroat world, she decided, and only the strongest were made to survive it.
She was on her own now. The only thing that would control her now belonged to her alone. She would embrace this new side of herself. She’d learn all the light and dark magic she could to spite those that (formally) stood in her place. She now considered that she needed to gather her things and leave before the rest of the coven realized what had been done. Again, this should have brought her some form of discomfort, but she was once again greeted by a feeling of relief.
Leaving her home, she looked to the sky, wondering about all the places she could go. She had heard that London was lovely this time of year. Or she could join a ship and travel all around the world by boat. The possibilities were endless now and she reveled in the newfound feeling. Once packed, she had only a brief moment of hesitation when a single thought came to mind. You. She couldn’t leave you behind, it wasn’t right. She didn’t want to leave you behind. You were everything. You had become her world when you met in that clearing years ago.
The only question she had now was whether you would come with her or not.
-*-
“Agatha? It’s the middle of the night, are you alright?” you asked her in a whisper when you had opened your door. She hesitated for a moment, lost in the way the moon silhouetted your sleepy features. After she blinked and cleared her head, she took your hand in her own. You took hers in kind and squeezed it. The shadows around you hid the dark discoloration of her fingertips.
“Something’s happened and I need to leave. For good,” she explained hastily. “The coven will be after me before morning. I won’t be able to come back,” she murmured, closing her eyes in an attempt to hide from you maybe. If she was to ever feel regret for what she had done, it would only be now, when admitting it to you. She couldn’t tell you the real story, in fear of how you would react, but a lie still hurt.
“Aggi, what did you do?” you murmured, cupping her cheek. She leaned into the touch, indulging in the warm feeling of your thumb stroking her cheekbone. It was warm in the same way her magic had been warm, so she reveled in it once more.
“Come with me,” her voice was below a whisper as she pressed her lips to your palm, opening her eyes to meet your own. She didn’t know what to expect from your expression when she asked, but the look of grief and pain that overtook your gaze surprised her more than she would have expected.
“Aggi, I-”
“We would be safe, happy. I can take care of us both and we can live our lives, just you and me,” She spoke quickly, her voice filled with an anxious plea that broke you. She watched as you squeezed your eyes shut, pressing your lips in a fine line. Any hope she had of you coming was quickly dwindling.
“I’m sorry, I can’t,” you said in a breath. She only now noticed the tears dripping from your eyes when the moonlight caught one that rushed down your chin just right. She squeezed your hand, trying to hold on for as long as she could.
“Why? What’s keeping you here? You don’t love him. You never did. You're not even his kind” She choked, trying her best not to yell. “You didn’t want any of this, that’s what you told me,” she murmured and you shook your head.
“I know. I know that’s what I said, but things got more…” you trail off, biting your lip as you glance away from her eyes, “complicated,” you finished and another round of tears started to fall. She didn’t understand what you meant, searching your gaze for some kind of explanation. Was this your way of rejecting her? A gentle way of saying “it’s been fun, but it needs to end.” that didn’t sound right. It didn’t sound like you.
It took her a moment to realize you were warped around her now, your arms resting right below her own and your face buried in her shoulder, wetting the fabric of her dress and cloak with tears. Once she noticed the touch, she felt it. She felt the almost unnoticeable bump of your stomach and the world seemed to crash around her. She felt like she was going to be ill. Like she was going to pass out then and there and see her mother much sooner than she intended.
“No. no, you’re not...” she stammered as you squeezed her tighter, your small sobs muffled by her shoulder. She couldn’t finish the thought out loud. The words felt foreign in her mouth. They felt like another lie that she didn’t want to tell you.
She wasn’t sure what to do now. She wanted to hold you, soothe you, and tell you it would be alright, but something all too familiar to betrayal seemed to seep into her skin with every shaky sob you took against her chest. Her cheeks grew wet without her noticing as you clung to the cloak around her shoulders.
“I’m sorry, Agatha. I-” you pulled away from her, your hands grabbing at her shoulders to keep her up. Your cheeks glistened in the moonlight. She could make out your furrowed brow, your trembling lip, and the way you suppressed the hiccup forming in your throat. “There was no more avoiding it. It’s been a year and Adam’s waited long enough,” you whispered to her, your voice laced with grief. She met your eyes once more and shook her head, swallowing the cry that formed in her throat at the sight of you. Looking into your eyes was like realizing what was happening all over again. It took her some time to formulate thoughts, and more to formulate appropriate words.
“We-we can fix this. We can raise it ourselves or find someone else-” she was frantic now, listing off things the two of you could do to fix this as you shook your head, taking her face between your palms to steady her, keep her looking at you. “I’m sure there’s a spell or other options if you don’t-” she stopped when she felt your fingernails dig into her cheeks. Her mouth was open, forming silent words that fell on deaf ears as you still shook your head.
“No, Aggi. No spells. No ‘finding a way out,” She didn’t want to hear this. It wasn't right. None of this was going how it should. She watched with helpless eyes as you cupped her face, your gaze puffy with a pain she couldn’t fix. “I’m sorry, Aggi, but it’s not our time.” You sounded tired and hearing that faint voice made her realize how exhausted she was. Exhausted from her studies, from her mother, from what had happened only hours before, and now from you. She grimaced, swallowing back more tears and the bitter taste that was filling her mouth as she shook her head. You simply took a breath, letting your own eyes close as you nodded.
“But you don’t love him. You love me,” she insisted with pleading eyes as she ran a hand through your hair, moving it out of your face. “You told me that. You told me you were always going to love me and only me,” she whimpered, holding your hand against her cheek in another effort to keep you with her. Her voice was small, helpless like a child. It was a voice that few would ever hear, and if the circumstances were different, you might have felt special hearing her so vulnerable. You made another choked sound as you brushed your thumbs over her cheeks.
“And I meant it, my love. I meant every word,” you insisted with a hiccup “But I can’t come with you. Not yet,” she stayed silent for a while, letting those words sink in as a new ache filled her chest. It could be regrettable hope or determination, but she wasn’t letting you slip away from her that easily.
“Then I’ll wait,” You shook your head at this but she pressed on, taking your hands from her cheeks and squeezing them tight before pressing them to her chest. You could feel the rapid speed of her heartbeat under your palm. “I’ll wait for you as long as I need, and we’ll be together, just you and me,”
“That’s not fair Aggi. You can’t do that to yourself,” your cried, but she shook her head as she swallowed the lump in her throat. “You don’t deserve any of this Agatha. I’m sorry…” you murmured, turning your gaze from her pleading eyes.
“Please!” she yelled, her voice dripping with new desperation that you would never grow familiar with. You meet her blue gaze again. Her eyes are watery with her tears but it’s breathtaking in a way. “Just, just let me have this, ok?” tears spill from their barrier now, and it would have pained you too much to say no, so you gave in to her.

Motherland: Fort Salem. A Timeline
I’ve have seen a bunch of random posts about how Raelle and Scylla have been together for two seconds, how can they possibly be in love. Or how can the Unit be going through all this after only being on base for a couple of weeks. Now, I’m here for a good U-haul joke about the gays running away together after two weeks but below is my breakdown for why this assumption may be incorrect and that they have in fact been at Fort Salem for 11 weeks as of the Bellweather wedding.
Before I begin; a caveat. Yes they filmed the pilot in 2018. Yes they filmed the rest of season 1 in Spring 2019. While I’m sure they didn’t really pay that much attention to weather in the details, I’m going to provide my explanation at the end to account for unchanging weather that is likely a direct consequence of a limited window for filming as opposed to planned, historical canon.
1) Conscription day is February 19th. Based on the Spree attack on Conscription day being at a mall in winter and the fact that the Salem Accord was signed on February 19th (1692). Since witches answer the call as dictated by the Salem Accord, we can infer that Conscription day is synonymous with the date the Salem Accord was signed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is also supported by the cold weather (mentioned) and snow seen in New York, where Abigail is during Conscription day.
Tumblr media
Raelle lives in the Cession near Carolina, so it wouldn’t be terribly cold or have snow in February.
Tumblr media
2) Witches report to Fort Salem on February 20th, the day after Conscription day, based on the conversations between Raelle and her neighbor and Tally catching a flight to Boston day after Conscription day. Raelle meets Scylla within her first week on base, probably within a day or two since it seems like she bails on the first training session; Anacostia lectures her for getting demerits in the first week.
3) The Pageant in Salem town is in late March. It is very possible that witches do not feel cold the same way civilians do. Abigail’s indifference to New York winter weather also suggests this. However, at Gallows Hill you can see civilians wearing heavier jackets and beanies (and not the hipster kind) even while witches only wear their dress uniforms. There is no snow, but it’s still cold for normal people. This could match well with the weather in and around Salem in late March.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aside. If this is true, that means that they’ve been on base for about a month or more by this point. It means that the opening scene for episode 2 is NOT a direct continuation of the closing scene from episode 1 (aka, not the morning after for Raelle and Scylla). It means Raelle and Scylla have been sleeping together for a few weeks at least, let’s say ~4 just to fit nicely into this proposed timeline. This also means they don’t make “girlfriends” official right away.
4) Men arrive on base April 30th, the day before Beltane. Though not explicitly stated, this can be assumed based on context and small bits of dialogue, most notably the fact that Porter dies either the night before or day of Beltane and he went to go confront Scylla his first day on base.
Aside. This means that the first three episodes cover 10 weeks of time on base. Raelle has since given Scylla maybe 5 or 6 weeks to open up and talk about herself after saying “take as much time as you need” in the graveyard. Therefore, her telling Scylla “no you don’t get to do that with this one, you either tell me what’s going on or I’m leaving” when Porter is being creepy in Memorial Hall is not her going back on her word of patience. It’s Raelle saying, ‘I’ve been patient, you need to tell me what’s going on because I’m hurting’.
Tumblr media
I just really like this screen shot so I’ll include it. Look at her face, LOOK at it.
Tumblr media
Patience is wearing thin.
5) Beltane is May 1st since it’s based on an actual Wiccan holiday. Episode 4 is a direct continuation of episode 3.
6) The Bellweather Wedding is May 8th-10th, a week after Beltane. Abigail says, “My cousin is getting next week” on May 2nd, the day after Beltane. Episode 5 therefore starts a week after Beltane which means Raelle has been trying to get Scylla invited to the wedding for days. This also fits the weather in that region around that time and civilian wedding guests are not wearing coats.
Tumblr media
Justification for why it’s not FREEZING at Fort Salem when the witches arrive on base. (New England winters are BRUTAL).
Back to my caveat. The easy answer is simply because they filmed the series in Spring. You can’t film year round for a 10 episode season on a Freeform budget. This isn’t HBO so they don’t have the luxury of delaying production just so there is real snow. But this makes telling time difficult so here is my crafted justification for why it’s always so damn nice on base when it shouldn’t be based in this timeline.
1) As mentioned above, it seems as though witches are less sensitive to cold then civilians.
Tumblr media
2) Witches in the American military literally control the weather. I’m guessing they keep the weather neutral and alter it to see fit (i.e. for training or courting purposes).
Tumblr media
3) Fort Salem get’s its power from General Alder. It is linked to her life force. We see this in A Biddy’s Life. So if she’s healthy, the base is thriving and beautiful. If she’s sick or injured, the base suffers and dies.
Tumblr media
Cheers - let me know if you agree.

Madame Sul-Te-Wan
Tumblr media
Madame Sul-Te-Wan (born Nellie Crawford; March 7, 1873 – February 1, 1959) was an American stage, film and television actress for over 50 years. The daughter of former slaves, she began her career in entertainment touring the East Coast with various theatrical companies and moved to California to become a member of the fledgling film community. She became known as a character actress, appeared in high-profile films such as The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916), and easily navigated the transition to the sound films.
Nellie Crawford was born in Louisville, Kentucky, to former slaves Cleon De Londa and Silas Crawford. Her father left the family early in her life, and her mother became a laundress for Louisville stage actresses. Young Nellie became enchanted by watching the young actresses rehearse when she delivered laundry for her mother. When she was older she moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, joined a theatrical company called Three Black Cloaks, and began billing herself as Creole Nell. She also formed her own theatrical companies and toured the East Coast. After moving to California, Madame Sul-Te-Wan began her film career in uncredited roles in director D. W. Griffith's controversial 1915 drama Birth of a Nation. Sul-Te-Wan had allegedly written Griffith a letter of introduction after hearing that Griffith was shooting a film in her Kentucky hometown. Griffith had intended that he would play a rich landowner who spits in the face of a woman who slights him. The scene was cut by the censors but Madame Sul-Te-Wan was hired at $3 a day and this became the first contract for a black woman when she was hired at $25 a week. Sul-Te-Wan had managed to get the role by her extravagant dress which caught Griffith's attention.
In the early 1900s, Sul-Te-Wan married Robert Reed Conley. They had three sons, but Conley abandoned his family when the third boy was only three weeks old. Two of her sons, Odel and Onest Conley, became actors and appeared in several films. Some of these film featured their mother.
Following her roles for Griffith, Madame Sul-Te-Wan followed up in 1916 with a role in the Anita Loos-penned drama The Children Pay with Lillian Gish and in 1917 with Gish's sister Dorothy in the Edward Morrissey-directed drama Stage Struck.
Throughout the 1910s and 1920s, Madame Sul-Te-Wan would establish herself as a publicly recognizable character actress. In 1918 she appeared (uncredited) in Tarzan of the Apes as Jane's maid, Esmerelda. Most often appearing in "Mammy" roles alongside such popular actors of the silent film era as Tom Mix, Leatrice Joy, Matt Moore, Mildred Harris, Harry Carey, Robert Harron, and Mae Marsh. She appeared in the 1927 James W. Horne-directed Buster Keaton comedy College, and in the 1929 Erich von Stroheim-directed drama Queen Kelly, starring Gloria Swanson.
Madame Sul-Te-Wan transitioned into the talkie era with relative ease and continued to appear in high-profile films alongside such prominent film actors as Conrad Nagel, Barbara Stanwyck, Fay Wray, Richard Barthelmess, Jane Wyman, Luise Rainer, Melvyn Douglas, Lucille Ball, Veronica Lake and Claudette Colbert. However, as a black woman in the era of segregation, she was consistently limited to appearing in roles as minor characters who were usually convicts, "native women",  or domestic servants, such as her role as a "Native Handmaiden" in the 1933 box-office hit King Kong. Despite the motion picture industry's limitations for African-American performers, Sul-Te-Wan worked consistently throughout the 1930s and 1940s.
In 1937, Sul-Te-Wan was cast in the memorable role of Tituba in the film Maid of Salem, a dramatic retelling of the events surrounding of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. The film starred Claudette Colbert, Fred MacMurray, Gale Sondergaard, Pedro de Cordoba, and Louise Dresser and was rather financially successful. Sul-Te-Wan's performance garnered critical praise.
On September 12, 1953, a banquet was held at the Hollywood Playground Auditorium to honor Madame Sul-Te-Wan by motion picture actors and film personalities. Amongst the 200 guests who attended the event were Louise Beavers, Rex Ingram, Mae Marsh, Eugene Pallette and Maude Eburne.
In 1954, Sul-Te-Wan appeared in the Otto Preminger directed and almost entirely African-American cast musical drama Carmen Jones opposite Dorothy Dandridge, Harry Belafonte, Diahann Carroll, and Pearl Bailey as Dandridge's grandmother. The film marked a departure for Sul-Te-Wan, who after appearing onscreen for over four decades, was finally able to act in a role that was atypical of her "Mammy" roles. The pairing of Dandridge and Sul-Te-Wan in Carmen Jones spawned a still widely believed but erroneous rumor – that Sul-Te-Wan was Dandridge's actual grandmother (some allege that she is Dandridge's great-grandmother). However, there is no merit to the claim and the two women are unrelated.
At age 77, Sul-Te-Wan married for the second time, to German immigrant Anton Ebentheuer. The marriage lasted three years. During the 1950s, while in her 80s, she continued to appear onscreen in a number of well-received films, albeit now mostly in smaller bit parts and often uncredited. Her last screen appearance came in the 1958 Anthony Quinn-directed adventure film The Buccaneer, starring Yul Brynner and Charlton Heston.
On February 1, 1959, Madame Sul-Te-Wan died after suffering a stroke at the age of 85 at the Motion Picture Actors' Home in Woodland Hills, California.[10] She was interred at the Pierce Brothers' Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood, Los Angeles County, California.
In 1986, she was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame.  Sul-Te-Wan was the first black actor, male or female, to sign a film contract and be a featured performer.
