I wanna talk thumbs.

They say you can tell a lot about a person from a handshake. You can from a handhold too. The way Ed holds Stede’s hand in 1.9 is tender and beautiful. We can see from the positioning and circumstance that Ed is the one with agency here, and almost certainly initiated the handhold.

However it’s the positioning of Stede’s thumb that bends my mind out of shape. Ed’s whole hand is in natural position. Stede’s thumb should be lying parallel to Ed’s. But Stede has deliberately twisted that thumb up and over Ed’s. Pressing down. There is nothing passive in Stede’s grip here. It’s a symbol of reciprocity, of reassurance. And Ed’s staring right at it. There’s an unspoken promise in that thumb.

We all know what happens next…

Yet they get a do-over in 2.5 as part of their healing process. They kiss for a second time and hold hands for a second time, romantically. The handholding then becomes a thumb-war game. It feels like a tiny callback to the beach handhold in 1.9. It’s a playful power-struggle. A memory. Perhaps an unspoken apology.

It’s fun and it’s beautiful, but no way is Stede’s thumb remaining atop this time. Last time that happened, things did not go to plan. The way Ed cocks his head to the left playfully yet assertively as he ‘wins’ the game reveals a need to feel in control. Stede has already respected Ed’s boundary in this scene and builds Ed’s self-esteem further with this silly little moonlight game. This time things are different.

Sure, it’s improv. But improv doesn’t mean not planned. It just means we have some ideas and we’re going to develop them in the moment. These two guys understand the psychologically of Ed and Stede so well this scene developed organically to its perfect and natural conclusion.

This time, Ed won.

Which means Stede wins too.

Patch 1.9 Full Event Summary! (Live Updates)

The 1.9 event summary got posted! I ran the patch notes through google translate and combined them with some translations from the official server. If I find anything else major I will update. Skin/Character previews can be found in my previous post, and I'll post some new character kit rundowns later! I will tag every spoiler post with the version number, so add that to your filters if you don't want to see anything about it.

Free Six Star for everyone: Semmelweiss, a mineral support that drains ally health to give them buffs based on their missing health.

First banner: Lucy, an intelligence DPS/support that spends Electricity to give their incantations extra effects, such as hitting more targets or buffing ally afflatus damage.

Second banner: Kakania, a plant support/tank/sub-healer that absorbs a portion of damage taken by allies and uses it to enhance her self-healing and damage.

Lorelei is a star afflatus five star support/sub dps. Her incantations haven't been released but her i1 Passive gives a buff depending on the most common card type in your hand, and her i3 passive gives her moxie when critting with her ult (Just Star Things). She is obtained from the new roguelite mode so may be accessible to players starting after 1.9.

New skins for Mesmer Jr., Desert Flannel, Voyager, Regulus, and Jessica.

New main story chapter of course. Chapter Six is called Vereinsamt. Apparently, 1.7 is not a direct continuation of 1.5, but 1.9 will combine the two for a proper ending.

Brand new roguelite mode. The reception to 1.6's attempt was pretty poor, so I think this is a revised version that will be left in the game permanently.

New story events for Lucy and Kakania.

New anecdotes for Eagle and Semmelweiss.

New maps for Three Doors! I enjoyed the Mesmer storyline so I'm interested.

Reruns of all the skins from 1.1 - 1.4. The London wilderness will now be permanently available in the shop.

All of the standard stuff you can find in events. There's a shop, new wilderness, free items all over the place, and puzzle side events. Uttu is going to be there. You know the drill.

Edit 1: They're finally adding a system to let you seamlessly connect water tiles in the wilderness. No more dumb transition tiles!

Patch 1.9 Characters and Skins!

Playable Lucy!!!!! I'm only spoiled up to Chapter 5 so I'm not sure if she comes back in the story before 1.9, but now she's finally getting a banner.

New character Kakania is a six star Plant unit. Not sure what type of character is yet but she seems to fight by summoning mirrors. Will update! She seems to have a German (?) accent.

FREE SIX STAR ! Semmelweis is going to be given out to everyone during the anniversary event. Interestingly her i1 and i2 skins look completely different. Perhaps pre/post "vampirism"?

Lorelei is a new five star debuting in 1.9! She seems to be a music themed sub dps/support, but we've only seen her insight passives so far. She seems to be wearing a frilly dress combined with a strait jacket..??? Idk what's going on here. Hopefully she appears in the story to explain.

FREE SONETTO SKIN ! You get it just for logging in during the event. Trying to find more pictures but it looks cute!

Midmer Jr. gets a free skin I guess. Her three fans are probably very happy!

Back to good characters! Desert Flannel is getting a skin. Mostly likely roaring jukebox.

Voyager is getting this dreamlike possibly Alice in Wonderland themed skin. Looks like it's leaning more into witchy-bard than cosmic space maid.

Our first skin confirmed to have a brand new ult animation! Her mallet is swapped for an AXE. (added to list of units who would cut you in half (37: "Intersect and Divide!" = "I'm going to bisect you now.").

Regulus is becoming the first character to get a second non-insight skin! It seems she took lessons from Lilya, as her boat is now flying and her ult is this insane animation where she flies by and drops a big bomb on the enemy.

There are some small labels in the top left of each skin saying "free", "garment", "advanced", or "unique". I presume the garment skins will be obtained as normal through the shop or jukebox, but I'm not sure about the others. It could be that Advanced skins are at a higher price point, with Unique being a tier above that. I'll research and update!

Edit 1: Advanced Skins debuted in 1.6, and Unique is a tier above that. Advanced are 1080 Crystal Drops and Unique are 1.6k.
