So, I’ve been thinking a lot about the Wrestlemania 40 matches/moments involving Seth and Roman. I keep wondering why Seth did what he did. I’ve watched most of his promos with Cody leading up to the event and his reasoning was essentially that from his perspective, this was the last solid chance to get the championship back before Roman became truly untouchable. He also stated that he wanted to help Cody bring Roman down because Roman was the monster that Seth created by betraying and ultimately destroying the Shield.
Seth agreed to do the tag team match, he told Cody that he would “be his shield”. At the press conference before Smackdown and Wrestlemania he defended Cody against the Rock and Roman.
Those were all his choices to make.
Honestly, I think Seth knew he was going to lose his title at Mania. He knew that helping Cody would put him in a position where he could very well lose his title but he did it anyway because he wanted to finish the story.
No, I’m not just talking about Cody’s story here. Yes, he wanted Cody to finish his story. That’s why he supported Cody in the months leading up to Mania and he supported Cody when he needed him the most at the event itself.
But, the other story I’m talking about here is a bit older. Seth gave Cody the best chance he could to win the title, despite Seth’s obvious injuries. That was Cody’s story.
Seth also gave Roman the opportunity to finish his story or more-so their story. The story that started 10 years ago. Seth, Roman, and Dean’s story.
Seth lost his title due to his obsession with Roman.
Roman lost his title due to his obsession with Seth.
Same night, two stories finished.
What storytelling.

In 2022, seth weaponized his history with Roman against him, and it uh. Didn’t go so hot for him, it ended with Roman murdering him with a steel chair.
In 2024, seth does the same trick again, and Roman’s ready for it! Hits him before he can even really get in the ring. But Seth’s learned in ways Roman hasn’t. He knows now that if Roman has the chance to get him back, to hurt him, he can’t resist (i am thinking about how Roman went back to hit Seth in 2022, even after everything was over). And Seth uses his own self destruction to help Cody.
It’s a fabulous character arc/moment: jn 2022 he selfishly tries to manipulate Roman, in 2024 he unselfishly uses the same strategy because he knows Roman hurting him will save Cody.
Big fan of incredible lack of self preservation and willingness to do himself harm here!!! And the fact that Seth very very literally recreated his initial betrayal as an act of penance. There’s no way he brought that steel chair to the ring thinking he was going to be able to use it.
