Okay okay okay I promised I would do it and here I am (tagging the lovely @captainangua) talking about my thoughts with 1x14 Nightmare and and 12x4 American Nightmare. So first of all- names. They both have Nightmare in them and I think that for Sam they also do sort of represent a nightmare of the worst thing that could have happened to him regarding his psychic powers. Obviously both Magda and Max have psychic powers and suffer abuse at the hands of the people in charge of them and try to kill their mothers. They are also pretty young. It’s fair to argue that they are Sam mirrors. So now that we’ve got that out of the way, Priest Constume. Sam and Dean enter both general-scenes of the crime (the setting for the episode) dressed as priests which should have happened more because first of all Sam looks great and it’s funny to see Dean being ridiculous in a priest costume. Look at them they were little guys and now they’re not little anymore! They become involved due to strange seemingly fandom deaths in the community. Both Magda and Max die pretty awfully- Max through suicide and Magda at the hands of Ketch. And through these characters, a new concern is introduced to Sam and Dean. Is Sam going to “turn bad?” And then the introduction of Ketch (which they don’t know about yet). Also, Magda and Max both have telekinesis which Sam has (but only once). Sam, Max, and Magda all struggle some with controlling their powers and just really get the short end of a stick. There are ideas surrounding inherent evilness and impurity, some religious themes…So yeah those are some of my thoughts on these two episodes, obviously 12x4 plays off of 1x14.
