My eternal diet....
When I met my husband some 14 years ago now, I was on a diet.  Carefully watching every morsel I put in my mouth, gulping down breakfast smoothies on the go in the car on my way to work, woofing huge green leaf salads at my desk for lunch, drizzled with an array of fat free dressings, that I seemed to have unknowingly accrued and that now lived in my desk drawers.  On the way home from work I had grown accustomed to stopping off at a high street food store (the voice of my mother ringing in my ear - only go round the outside of a shop, thats where the fresh food is, it was a slippery slope to divert to the middle isles) and carefully scrutinising the ingredients to check for the dreaded fat and sugar contents like some kind of crazed woman.  I usually ended up with a dreary chicken salad again with an equal dreary light dressing. How utterly dull! By the time the weekend came I felt so completely deprived that I usually downed a couple of bottles of champers with my friends, hotly followed by too many vodka and lemonades to recall, diet lemonade of course though, then the snacks appeared. Whoops a daisy!
It naturally didn't help that I was in the early throws of a relationship with my future husband, which pretty much meant meals out twice a week at the Thai, Indian or a midway gastro pub. Why is food so pleasurable? it's just not fair, I've never been what you'd call skinny, far from it, most of my life has been a size 14 upwards.  It's not through the lack of exercise either. In those days I used to swim 40 lengths a night and spent a good 40 minutes on machines in utter cardio hell in the gym. I hate the gym.  With a passion.  The only thing it was ever good for was eyeing up potential suitors, but as I now was out of that arena, why bother? Who would be attracted to a lady with an incredibly sweaty crotch area after 30 mins on the rowing machine anyway, beats me! The most amusing thing was unbeknown to either of us my future husband and I were both members at the same gym.  I exercised and left literally as he was pulling into the car park in his noisy 1970's sports car.  I noticed that but never caught a glimpse of him.  He always came on dates in a more 'middle England' automobile. If he had of caught me all sweaty in that area, perhaps I'd not be married now.
I now run, I absolutely love it, I did couch to 5K and it was a revelation, I'm now the proud owner of 2 young boys, which later followed the husband.  I'm not allowed to go anywhere alone. Even trips to the toilet are an accompanied affair, full of an array of personal questions, usually aimed at me and my no hopefully un-sweaty bits.  The revelation has been that what I say I'm going for a run, not a murmur, no "Can I come mum" to be heard.  It's utter bliss to get out on my own, to be at the helm of my own superstar DJ experience with some I have to say excellent nostalgic tunes, ACDC are paramount in my hill running moments.  The first KM I'm continually questioning my sanity, seriously, why are you doing this? I want to die? I think I am dying!!! then by some fluke I ease into it and at the end of my 5K I feel like I could run the marathon. Perhaps even the Olympics. Get me! The euphoria I feel when I have finished is unrivalled and that feeling should be bottled. I literally feel epic.
I also play rugby, I'm on a women's team. According to my fit bit a training session burns off 950 calories in 90 minutes. It takes some gusto to play rugby. Not for the faint hearted.  I can hear you questioning now, why if I run 20-25K a week and play rugby am I still decidedly chunky.  Some 14 years later, nothing has really changed, other than a brief foray with the Cambridge plan where I actually managed to get down to the Holy Grail of a size 10 and actually better still remain there until I fell pregnant. That was the very last time I've been anything less than a tight size 14!
I've done clean eating, paleo, plant based diets, Cambridge, Slimming World and Weight Watchers and nothing.....probably because at the weekend I have a tendency to have a few glasses of this or that and then slide straight of the rails. Now I'm a rather chunky tight fitting size 16 and enough is enough.  I have decided to try one of these (put my faith into) a fresh meal delivery service, delivered daily, 3 meals, 2 snacks, all below 1500 calories and absolutely no cooking - I have chosen 'Love Yourself'.
I just need to avoid prosecco, wine, beer, gin oh I love gin .... and so on, gasp, sigh. Wish me luck.
