Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure (1984)
Tumblr media
I have some affection for the Ewoks but I don’t loooooove them, not enough to crave a film centered entirely around the furry savages. I suspect most people feel the way I do and doubt most people even know Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure exists. It’s not a hidden gem. For the most part, this barely feels like a Star Wars movie. In fact, it does not feel like a “Star Wars” movie at all. It’s a generic magical adventure featuring "Star Wars"-like characters. I can’t recommend the movie on its successes, but I can recommend it on its faults as something “so bad it’s good”.
Set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (although you couldn’t tell because there are no Stormtroopers or recognizable faces in the film), it stars Eric Walker as Mace Towani and Aubree Miller as his sister Cindel. When their parents disappear, they befriend the primitive inhabitants of Endor's moon: the Ewoks. To find the missing parents, the children and several Ewoks embark on a mystical quest.
The bulk of this movie isn’t that interesting. Mace doesn’t trust the Ewoks but Cindel does until then they finally bonding and become friends. Once that's settled, everyone can figure out how to communicate and then FINALLY start the quest. Even the adventure in question with the children, the Ewoks and their mounts (creatures that look suspiciously like Earth Ponies) isn’t that interesting. Before they can find the lair of the creature who parent-napped the adults two more Ewoks need to be recruited, and then they must all figure out what the magical artifacts they've been given do. Meanwhile, there's nothing to latch onto. All of the Ewoks speak their strange native language while a narrator tells you what’s going on. The actress playing Cindell is so young she can’t act, and her role is reduced to as little talking as possible.
The only people who would enjoy Caravan of Courage are the youngest, most undiscriminating audience members. The characters are one-dimensional, the plot is spoon-fed to you, and the peril is non-existent. Remember all the aliens and droids from Star Wars who stood out, who were memorable despite their lack of dialogue? You understood what they are saying because of the situation or from the other characters' reactions. It also makes the mistake of believing children can only relate to child characters. With such thin material, it would be a nigh-impossible ordeal for adults to make it work. Child actors? You might as well ask them to levitate their X-Wing out of a swamp.
I’ll give this movie a “recommendation” as something you can watch and make fun of for the last half hour. The special effects vary wildly, characters make incredibly stupid, borderline unbelievable decisions, people and objects change size from shot to shot. Throughout, there are plenty of moments to make fun of, courtesy of the bad acting or the fact that some of these Ewoks look more creepy than adorable, but the end is where you get all of the “so bad it’s good” money shots.
I hesitate to recommend Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure to even the tiniest Star Wars fans. It has some good special effects throughout, I’ll give it that and some of the comedy is pretty funny too. Ultimately, this is a novelty item, something for obsessive Star Wars fans to watch because they’ve seen all of the other material too many times. Or perhaps you want some laughs at your friends' expense as they get ready for the May 4th celebrations. (On DVD, December 18, 2015)

Overdrawn at the Memory Bank (1984)
Tumblr media
Overdrawn at the Memory Bank fades from your memory as soon as the credits roll. That actually sort of works in its favor. Not remembering this poorly assembled sci-fi jumble desperately attempting to have some form of style is a relief
In a dystopian future, Aram Final (Raúl Juliá) is a programmer working for mega-corporation Novicorp. When he is caught watching 'Casablanca' at his station (films are forbidden), he is sentenced to a rehabilitative vacation. While his mind is placed inside the body of a baboon, his body is misplaced. As Fingal’s errant mind creates havoc and becomes an ever-greater threat to Novicorp's computer system, computech Apollonia James (Linda Griffiths) is the only one who can prevent the greedy corporation from eliminating Aram.
Though the premise may be confusing, it's not all that complicated on paper. In the future, you’re expected to be a personality-free, dull robot that doesn’t ask questions. If you do, your mind is extracted from your body and placed inside an animal's. You run around a bit then return to your regular, boring life feeling fresh. One day, the process goes wrong and people freak out. You'd never be able to understand any of it out while Overdrawn at the Memory Bank is playing. The film is needlessly bogged down with so much sci-fi jargon and technobabble you can’t make heads or tails of anything. Not helping is the nonsense plot. If Novicorp is powerful enough to control economics and the weather, who are its investors? How can its stock plummet when, in one location, for a couple of hours, a body is misplaced?
Even more puzzling are the characters. When Apollonia helps Aram by creating him a virtual environment, Novicorp's Chairman (played by Donald C, Moore) suddenly decides he must personally enter the virtual reality and assassinate Aram. Won’t the stocks fall even faster when people realize the business is run by a murderer?
The film is appallingly cheap. Aram's vacation? It’s a trip through stock footage, and director Douglas Williams can’t even do that right. Who looked at the two shots of a baboon, one taken during the day, one during the night, and said “These belong one right after the other."? It’d be funny if it weren't so dull.
I’ll give the picture credit for a couple of things, it is funny towards the end. Back in 1983, these special effects might've been impressive. Maybe. Today? they're embarrassing. It makes me wonder. Was Overdrawn at the Memory Bank sold on the "spectacle"? Did audiences look at the ridiculous attempts to create a cyberspace and call it a feast for the eyes, or was it ugly even then?
I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to mention Casablanca. This film loves Casablanca. Every couple of scenes it recreates the sets, characters (though with different actors) or makes references/allusions to the Humphrey Bogart/Ingrid Bergman/Paul Henreid classic. Don’t remind me of another, better movie I’d rather be watching. Just wrap it up and let me get to something more interesting already!
The further Overdrawn at the Memory Bank goes on, the looser its grip on the audience becomes. You’ll be watching in a zombie-like state, waiting for something to jerk you out of your stupor. That much-needed awakening only comes when the film starts vomiting bad CGI effects all over itself. Its nonsensical story drains you like a vampire. I came close to giving it lower than the 1 star I'm settling only, only because of how hard I laughed so hard at the cyberspace stuff that comes during the climax. The best thing about this pile of shorted circuits is that it has the grace NOT to truly spoil anything from Casablanca. (On VHS, October 28, 2016)

Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo (1984)
Tumblr media
Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo is more than the greatest sequel title of all time. It’s a constant stream of pure entertainment. I don’t think I can call it a good movie, but it’s right on the edge and whichever way you categorize it, you’ll have a blast.
Set some time after the first, Kelly (Lucinda Dickey) now has a promising dance career. As she contemplates moving to France for a big show, she learns some grave news from her friends Ozone (Adolfo ‘Shabba Doo’ Quiñones) and Turbo (Michael ‘Boogaloo Shrimp’ Chambers). An evil business conglomerate wants to tear down their community center and replace it with a shopping mall. It’s up to the kids to raise the money needed to save the center!
I can't call Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo a good movie because of the storyline. It's as predictable as the hands on a clock and needlessly padded. Someone will donate a big chunk of money towards the project and it’ll seem like a turning point. Then, another, unrelated character will donate another huge sum of money only minutes later, making you forget about that first “win”. I know in real life every penny would count, but from a storytelling point of view, why have two people who donate say… $50 when one character could donate $100 and save us some time? On top of being poorly written and clichéd, the premise is contrived. You can’t help feel as though you were cheated out of a better film, particularly when you consider the way the previous one ended.
Where this film gains back an ocean’s worth of points is in its energy, enthusiasm, dance routines, and comedy. Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo clearly doesn’t take itself seriously, which makes you wonder if the flaws were intentional. Remember that spontaneous bar brawl in the first film? That off-the-wall moment that came so suddenly it had you laughing long and hard? That’s nothing compared to what Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo has in store for you. It's like the head of The Cannon Group, director Sam Firstenberg, and everyone involved in the dance choreography came up with some cool scenes and locked the writer in a closet until they could fit it in the plot somehow. Like Roger Rabbit said, you can get away with anything, even if it makes no sense if it’s funny. That’s one thing you have to give Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo credit it for, it certainly knows how to pull some laughs out of you.
What's not ambiguously good or bad are the inspired dance sequences. There are two big, jaw-droppingly nutty ones during the film (I wish the last number was as good as these). That talent combined with the picture's earnestness compels you to have a good time.
I was pleasantly surprised with Breakin’. I only watched it so I could get to the sequel, a film with a title so crazy and awesome, you’ve got to say the whole thing every time. In my book, it’s a legitimately good film, mostly because of the high energy, enthusiasm, and dance routines. That’s what brings me to also recommend the sequel. Just keep in mind the story you're about to sit through won't be good. By the time the credits are over, you’ll be wobbling your legs and contemplating whether or not you could do that backspin thing if you take it slow. This film's electricity is infectious. Purple Rain (1984)
Tumblr media
When I hear about a musician making their film debut, I get worried. Being able to perform in front of a crowd does not make you an actor. Some singers know this and pick a role even someone with no experience could do in their sleep. Battleship is a good example. Rihanna isn’t bad in the movie, but you would hardly even remember she’s in it. Then you have the other spectrum, like Michael Jackson in Moonwalker and the audience is subjected to a glorified demo reel. Once in a while, you get lucky and find that perfect middle like you do in Purple Rain.
Prince plays our unnamed protagonist others refer to as “The Kid”; the talented frontman of his band, The Revolution. He’s a temperamental, selfish, and irresponsible musician who frequently lets his teammates down. When Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero) walks into the First Avenue club and hears The Revolution playing, she dreams of becoming a musician herself. Her ambitions become a tool for The Kid’s rivals to use against him.
The plot doesn’t sound like it should work at all, but it does. There are two intersecting stories at once. First, we have the Kid, who needs to experience something revolutionary. Otherwise, he’ll end up alone and bitter, someone whose talent is ultimately squandered because he’s pushed his bandmates away. Then we have Apollonia who wants the same kind of success he has, even if it means compromising herself. The movie doesn’t try to be a big grandiose story about making millions of dollars and selling that hit record. It’s personal, the struggles are believable. You're following two people who have the potential to be big but aren’t there yet.
Director Albert Magnoli (who co-wrote with William Blinn) plays to their actors' strengths and keeps the emphasis on the emotions. The movie is about a musician and many good songs are featured, with the titular Purple Rain being the undeniable best. Although Prince's name isn't linked to the writing, you get a feeling he had input on his character or the direction of the story. The way he reacts to his abusive mother (Olga Karlatos) and father (Clarence Williams III) feels a bit too authentic, and his role as an arrogant, misguided up-and-coming musician resonates with self-reflection. At a glance, this looks like a vanity project but Prince has not cast himself as a shining hero. There's dimension to this role. Not all of the performances are great and the plot may be a bit thin but if you judge this musical on its music, it's hard to get upset by what seem like trivial matters when you've just heard the dulcet tones of Let's Go Crazy or When Doves Cry.
I'm not sure why you'd be on the lookout for films featuring musicians playing parts but Purple Rain is among the best Hollywood has to offer. The soundtrack is terrific and the story's pretty good too. (On DVD, August 7, 2015)

Conan the Destroyer (1984)
Tumblr media
Though Conan the Barbarian has presence and memorable moments, I wouldn't call it "a great film". It's the end-all-be-all of sword and sorcery stories compared to the sequel, however. Conan the Destroyer has none of the charms of its predecessor. This new adventure feels like a D&D campaign with Arnold Schwarzenegger thrown in the middle.
Set some time after the first story, Conan and his companion, a thief named Malak (Tracey Walter), are forcefully summoned by Queen Taramis (Sarah Douglas) to the city of Shadizar. The Queen will bring Conan's beloved Valeria back to life. In exchange, he must help the Queen’s niece, Princess Jehnna (Olivia d’Abo) as she retrieves a mystical key that will help bring the dreaming god Dagoth to their world.
The toning down of the violence, gore, and nudity is immediately noticeable. Conan the Barbarian isn’t just an “R” picture; it’s a heavy “R”. To go from crucifixions, topless women and buckets of gore to a “PG” rating, just to get more potential butts in the seats is a betrayal. What separates Schwarzenegger's brutal barbarian from the kinder, gentler imitators like He-Man or the Beastmaster are scenes where he decapitates his archenemy and throws his head down a flight of stairs for all to see. Without this, there's no reason to show up.
Instead of the badassness, we get a big pile of useless characters and a whole lotta unfunny humor. Conan assembles a team of allies you don't care about: the Wizard (Mako as Akiro), the Amazon (Grace Jones as Zula), and a paladin (Wilt Chamberlain as Bombaata). See what I mean about this feeling like a plot from Dungeons & Dragons? Along with the princess, the titular barbarian, and his buddy the thief there are simply too many characters. If at least they were integral to the plot. Thief Malak is a coward through-and-through that doesn’t even have any useful lock-picking skills or character development. The same applies to Zula. While I like the idea of a badass female warrior to add to the group, all she does is fight in a style that’s different from Conan’s.
This more kid-friendly picture attempts to make you laugh and never succeeds. Comic relief Malak (picking on him again) is essentially the dollar-bin version of Gerry Lopez's character from the first movie. Your dislike for him increases as you realize he's only there to repeat the same joke over and over. He’s a coward. I get it!
The picture picks up towards the end. There's a sequence with a big monster that's pretty cool. For the most part, it fails to grab your attention. The story is not engaging and with the performances being only slightly better than last time (at least Schwarzenegger is more convincing here), it desperately needed dynamic action scenes to make up for the lack of everything else. When you’ve got an ineffective wizard for an opponent and a lot of scenes where characters stick around frozen while the plot moves around them, I throw my hands in the air and give up.
Conan the Destroyer can’t even get Arnold punching a camel in the face right. It's a mix of disappointment and embarrassment that isn't even worthy of hatred. (On DVD, July 5, 2015)

Against All Odds (1984)
Tumblr media
When I saw Against All Odds, I don’t know if I was tired or it was the film's pacing but I found it dull. While dismissing it, quotes on the DVD cover caught my eye. They got me wondering if I had truly given it a fair chance. I went back, reviewed some key scenes, and came out feeling much more positive towards it. My rating of 3/5 is an average grade between the two times I saw it. I hope to review it a second time once my memory has faded to allow another "fresh" opinion.
This romantic thriller centers around Terry (Jeff Bridges), an aging football player. He's been booted off the team, is no longer in his prime, and needs money. His old friend Jake (James Woods) offers him a job: travel to Mexico and find his girlfriend, Jessie (Rachel Ward). When Terry and Jessie fall for each other, it leads them to a trail of blackmail, betrayal, and corruption.
What brought me back to this remake of 1947's Out of the Past are the performances and characters. Terry is not a clean-cut good guy but neither is he a villain. You have to pay attention to his actions and Jeff Bridges' delivery to properly gauge how you feel about him. As for his on-screen partner, there were a few moments where I wasn’t sure what was going on with Rachel Ward’s accent, but she’s quite good too. Together, they intrigue you. There's no way this is going to be a simple romance. Once the thriller elements kick in, it gets even better. We have all of these different people pitted against each other for different reasons. Alliances are forged with one hand while the other reaches for a knife. Meanwhile, you latch onto this couple who are forced to make difficult choices. You won't see where that's headed, which makes the ending all the better. The DVD cover might have Bridges and Woods embracing on a beautiful sandy beach, but that's not what this movie is like. These are complicated characters and they make choices that are not necessarily the ones you want them to go with. They are not drawn through certain motions because of the script; they make flawed, human decisions. It makes the story feel genuine.
As I listing the things I enjoyed about the film, I struggle to determine why that first viewing didn’t have me gripped. It must have been an off day. I still think the beginning of the film could've picked up the pace and have the nagging feeling I won't be the only one who wonders if they shouldn't just go with the original instead of this remake. If at first Against All Odds doesn’t grab you, stick with it. With the strong conclusion, complex emotions, and a great script, it’s checking out worth at least twice if it didn't click with you the first time. (On DVD, July 16, 2015)

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)
Tumblr media
Whenever anyone talks about Star Trek 3: The Search for Spock, it's only to complain. As a follow-up to The Wrath of Khan - one of the best films about revenge ever - it is indeed a letdown. It also does have merit as another chapter in the series.
Previously, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) was forced to learn a difficult lesson. Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you can’t come up on top. When the diabolical Khan threatened to weaponize an environment-generating device called Genesis, Spock (Leonard Nimoy, who directs this time) gave up his life to save the ship. Now, Kirk prepares to return Spock’s body to his homeworld of Vulcan to be laid to rest. Meanwhile, Klingon commander Kruge (Christopher Lloyd) seeks to use Genesis for his own nefarious ends.
As a “Star Trek Movie”, this works well. Instead of fistfights, the focus is on diplomatic talks. The wacky technology is there so the characters can lear to use it responsibly. It has that episodic feel of “another day, another far-out adventure” and the tone is light. From the beginning, you know Spock's body will be found. The way it's shot, the special effects, the action scenes feel like they're right out of the show.
It's like the television series in negative ways as well. The performances aren't strong. It feels that much worse considering Leonard Nimoy - a much better performer than Shatner - is absent. Similarly, the action isn’t particularly well-choreographed or compelling. A tussle between Kirk and our villain makes it clear both actors were too old for that kind of business.
Overall, it leans more towards the good than the bad. So why does everyone insist that Star Trek movies are only worth watching if the numbers are even? I have a theory. It’s impossible not to compare The Search for Spock with The Wrath of Khan. It's fair but the two are very different. Khan is a true movie. We have a great villain, there’s ample character development, rich emotions, and a gut-punch of an ending. The story works even if you only have the vaguest knowledge of Star Trek. The same does not apply to Search for Spock. If The Wrath of Khan was... the 7th film in the series and this one the 8th, or 9th, it would've been better received. After a big, dark adventure that left audiences shaken, this one would've been a warm hug telling everyone that things will be ok. With seven more films following this one, it feels safe and not only because it does everything it can to restore the status quo.
The Search for Spock has been unjustly dismissed. It delivers what you would want from a franchise that contained monsters of the week, crazy sci-fi premises, and an optimistic view of the future. While you may cringe at the sub-par acting, the picture gets back on its feet once you dig into the strong and touching story of friendship. You may feel disconnected from it at first, fondly remembering its superior predecessor, but once you dig in, the story charms you. (On DVD, June 12, 2015)

Falling in Love (1984)
Tumblr media
Falling in Love is one of those romantic dramas that makes you want to question the people involved in it. There is something to say about finding the love of your life at the wrong time but the way this movie plays out is cringe-inducing.
Robert De Niro plays Frank Raftis, an architectural engineer who is married with two kids. Merryl Streep plays Molly Gilmore, a freelance artist who is married to a doctor. When they meet in a book store on Christmas Eve and then keep finding each other on the subway. Despite neither being able to move forward with the romance, they just can’t stay apart.
I wish the DVD that somehow found its way into my hands had included some amount of special features (instead of nothing) because I have no idea how anyone would sell this movie. Am I supposed to cheer for Frank as he contemplates abandoning his two children and his loving wife to get together with a woman he randomly bumped into? In any other movie, he'd be the villain the way he’s asking his friends how they went about with their affairs. The Same goes for Molly. She doesn’t have any children, not even a dog but her husband isn’t a jerk or anything. Everyone knows doctors work long hours saving lives. Did he surprise her career upon her?
You have a hard time accepting the concept so what's the draw? It certainly isn’t the chemistry between the leads. I didn’t feel any. There’s not even a steamy and cheesily shot love scene that would have appealed to the lizard component of my brain and had me appreciate the film on a sleazy level.
Often, I criticize films for having broadly-written characters. This movie could've used some. For the most part, everyone is realistic. The plot is a little contrived at times, with the two constantly bumping each other (and the beginning of the film seeming to imply that they should have met long ago but haven’t) but the people act like people do. We don’t have angry spouses that clearly resent each other, on one is abusive, we never learn Frank got married young because he got his girlfriend pregnant or anything like that. There’s not even some kind of animal desire where Frank and Molly are just lusting after each other and everything else becomes a blur.
I've got no complaints about the performances. The dialogue is fine. It's just difficult to accept what it's selling. Falling In Love - imaginative title by the way - is very much an “oh I want to be with you, but I can’t” kind of movie... and your inability to relate to its sentiments will make it feels like it lasts for an eternity.
