So I just finished watching the 2022 adaptation of Persuasion and like
It's a good film. It was fun and enjoyable.
It was also a TERRIBLE adaptation.
It would have worked so much better if they'd just used original characters. 'Inspired by Jane Austen' stories exist in the hundreds if not thousands. It wouldn't have been a reach to say "oh hey we took inspo from Persuasion for this new thing" and no one would have batted an eyelash and the film probably would have done better. Because it feels like an original story. It has the bare bones of Persuasion, yes. Also the character names. But so many of the characters feel so divorced from their novel counterparts that I kept forgetting that this was supposed to be Persuasion until someone got addressed by name again. Half of the motivations feel different, some of the changes to the storyline are baffling if you're making it an adaptation rather than just loosely inspiring it and the kitschy "talking to the camera thing" would have worked so much better if it had been literally any character other than Anne, like, say an original character. Also, the anachronisms would have been much more accepted in any film that was not an attempt at a Jane Austen Adaptation (see: the Bridgerton series as just one example)
If this film had been an original film that was only inspired by the plot of Persuasion it would have been well-loved. As an adaptation, I was cringing in minutes.

Half hour into the 1995 Persuasion now, and I can already see why everyone is saying that this is the superior adaptation - what’s odd though is that the 2007 version seems to have copied a number of minor alterations to the book’s plot from this earlier adaptation (the timing and staging of the young Musgrove boy’s fall and injury, for example*) rather than either keeping closer to the text or doing their own thing. Not sure how I feel about that, but as both versions are BBC productions I suppose they had the right to copy whatever they wanted.
*in the book, the boy falls from a tree in the afternoon of the day before Captain Wentworth is to dine with the Musgroves for the first time. Only Anne and Mary are home, and Mary is so upset that Anne must do all the work of sending for the apothecary, sending another servant to find Charles Musgrove and bring him home, keeping the toddler away from the injured child, comforting Mary as best she can, tending to the injured child and trying to keep him still and out of pain, and sending a message to the grandparents to let them know what’s happening. The whole family stays home with him the first night, anxious to find out if there will be any permanent spine injury, but by the following day it’s clear that only his collarbones is broken. Relieved, Charles wants to go to dinner that night but presumes Mary will want to stay with their child. Mary tries to get him to stay home with her until Anne suggests that Mary go too while she (Anne) looks after the boy, which makes Mary happy.
In both adaptations, the accident happens in the evening on the same day Wentworth is to dine. The scene starts with Anne dressing for dinner and taking extra care over her appearance as she knows Wentworth will be there, when a commotion draws Anne to the window. She sees her nephew being carried towards the house while someone shouts for help (though in the 1995 version the child is being carried by his father while Mary, walking next to them, calls desperately for Anne, while in the 2007 version the boy is in his grandfather’s arms and old Mr. Musgrove is shouting for Charles. The composition and camera angles in this shot are very similar in both versions.) We then cut to Anne tending the child while Charles and Mary argue about whether to go to dinner anyway and Anne solves it by offering to stay. Which shortens the timeline, but also presents both parents as being completely willing to abandon their child the very night of (indeed, within an hour of) the accident when they don’t yet know whether he will be paralyzed or not, instead of the next day when they’ve determined that he will recover without permanent consequences.
ETA: Also means that the accident happens after sunset, implying that the boy was climbing trees *in the dark* instead of during the day as in the book

Pirates of the Caribbean essay – representation, genre
For this essay I will be analysing the Disney franchise Pirates of the Caribbean with how the representation of women is portrayed in a modern/ more openminded world and how the genre of pirates re-in surged due to these films. The Pirates of the Caribbean first originated as a ride of the same name in Disneyland in 1967 with inspirations from the 1952 film The Crimson Pirate. This ride later became inspiration for a film that becomes a box office success Pirates of the Caribbean the Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) which has spanned 4 more very successful films and a multitude of games.  Representation is the depiction of a thing, person or idea and can be from any source like written, spoken or performed. This can be used to create a realistic depiction or can be adapted to create more of an abstract or perverse depiction. Genre is a style or category of art, music or literature that involves a particular set of characteristics.
Tumblr media
(Pirates of the Caribbean Poster, Disney)
The representation of women within the world of Pirates of the Caribbean is complicated as the films are aimed to appeal to everyone and carry on the progressive ways but to also reinforce the integrity and social contexts of the era and world of pirates. The ride although loved by many has had lots of adjustments made to it by toning it down and reducing the extreme inappropriateness/ sexualization towards women. The era of piracy was a very misogynistic time where women were not valued much at all with many being represented in media and films of pirates as working in brothels along with other representations of women such as them bringing bad luck on a ship and accusations of witchcraft. In the first 3 films most, women were either servants or harlots, so the focus and representation for women is one of the main characters, Elizabeth Swann the governor’s daughter a very strong and emotional women. These films also include the character Tia Dalma (Calypso) the goddess of the sea who is also represented as a strong and emotional character with both being very much in love.
The small number of female characters in the films has them be regularly objectified and made out to be inferior to the men but all the films have both sides of it with the men being sexist and misogynistic to the women being flirty and manipulative to get what they want.
Elizabeth Swann is very much a strong independent woman who goes against her ‘duty’ of being a high-class lady and lives a dangerous fun life which she has wanted by being very interested and knowledgeable of pirates. Although she is very independent and capable her character is also very much infatuated with Will Turner and is a big part of her motivations and journey. In Pirates of the Caribbean At Worlds End (2007) Elizabeth ends up becoming the king of the brethren, which is the highest title for all the pirates, and this really represents the character of Elizabeth as she has a very strong leadership role and handles pressure with ease but the journey on getting to that point was very much a male dominated one.
Tumblr media
(Keira Knightley, At Worlds End)
Calypso is a very mysterious character in the films who is very strong and independent living alone, but her characters story is very much another way of making man seem superior as she was the almighty goddess of the sea when she fell in love and was betrayed by the one, she loves, and man captured her and bound her with little to no power.
The film Pirates of the Caribbean On Stranger Tides (2011) which is heavily inspired by a novel of the same name by Tim Powers in 1987 has a leading role of Angelica the daughter of Blackbeard who is a very skilled pirate with great sword fighting skills and a master of disguise and deception. As every female role in Pirates of the Caribbean she is fuelled by love and it is a big part of her as a character, she is sown as being tough but also caring she not only had a previously had a relationship with Captain Jack Sparrow but is hellbent on finding the fountain of use and is trying to save/redeem her father’s soul.
Lastly, the newest Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales (2017) has a leading female role which is different from all the other films and instead of being a fearsome fighter/pirate it is Carina Smyth the abandoned daughter of Captain Barbossa and is very smart being an astronomer and horologist. This leading female role is the one who is sexualized the most out of all the films and is directly objectified and made to seem inferior to men, this is done by making lots of remarks laughing at her and not taking her seriously because she is a woman. There is lots of crude jokes and sexism throughout the film and this approach really made the audience dislike the film with lots of negative reviews and most of them about the sexism in the film.
Tumblr media
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hgeu5rhoxxY
(Dead Men Tell No Tales trailer, YouTube)
The Pirates of the Caribbean reignited the pirate genre as the last pirate film that was released was not successful called Cutthroat Island (1995). The pirate genre before was very much made to appeal towards men but Pirates of the Caribbean appeals to all genders with a one of the main characters being a female as well. The Curse of The Black Pearl was a very good combination of different genres to make the masterpiece that it is with the action, romance, adventure, comedy, and fantasy it could be argued that it can also be supernatural ass it deals with curses and the undead whilst making scenes scary but with all that they mix it forms the perfect concoction for an amazing movie. Another genre which Pirates of The Caribbean fits perfectly into is Swashbuckler. A Swashbuckler film is a subgenre of action which primarily includes sword fighting and adventurous heroic characters, the main characteristic of a Swashbuckler is to be well trained with a sword and to have a very straight code of honour. This element is not entirely applicable to Pirates of The Caribbean or Captain Jack Sparrow as they go by the “pirate code” which the characters go against all the time and sometimes only care about themselves.
Tumblr media
(Johnny Depp, At Worlds End)
The reason I chose to have the case study be Pirates of the Caribbean was because I loved the films when I was growing up due to the amazing characters, the adventures, the spectacular battle/ action scenes and the lore with the mythical creatures. I had lots of figures, toys and games which I would play with constantly and even the outfit of Captain Jack Sparrow as he seemed cool when I was young because he did whatever he wanted without a care, everything always worked out and he was a very witty comical guy. As I grew up and watched the movies again, I could appreciate the complex emotional side of the storytelling and the action scenes still look spectacular. Though Analysing Pirates of the Caribbean and the representation of women within it I was shocked to discover how bad it was with the ride and the films but what shocked me the most was how it seemed to go in a step backwards with Dead Men Tell No Tales with lots of sexism directly pushed out for ‘comedy’. This has made me really think about how far women have come and the change in way they are perceived and represented in tv and film but there are still films being made which are not socially acceptable now how they were and that it is not right.
In conclusion The Pirates of The Caribbean (excluding Dead Men Tell No Tales) has done a good job on maintaining the integrity of the pirate genre and era whilst also representing the main women as strong independent women for the modernisation of the older genre to appeal to current audiences. This being said there is still a large amount of sexism in the films but the representation of the women are that of positives not showing any generic old stereotypes of what women should do.

About Mazda 3 keylock structure
Created in 1920,  Mazda is Ford Motor Company subsidiary that produce average cars marketed to China, the Middle East, Mexico and North America. Since 1998 selection of  Mazda vehicles are adopting PAT as a primitive antitheft and electronic key-lock system. The passive anti theft keys that can be duplicated by a trivial dash-board procedure or by diagnostic appliances if one or more of the keys misplaced. In 2007  Mazda elect the Advanced Keyless Entry & Start System with remotes, key-less entry and push-button start to accomplish frequent jobs  as pressing a pushbutton to seal or pop the doors and moreover keyless device or push to start ignition.
Ignition switch repair
When the car does not start, there might be a whole lot of complications which could be the source. Since the fuel supply instrumentation and car power supply are plugged to the ignition switch, the issue can be wearisome to inspect by a non-experience hands, but following are a few frequent complications, which driver may have to endure with.
</p> <h5>ignition key is stiffly turning</h5> <p> When the ignition key wont turn, it could be for a couple of reasons: Typically this happens when the steering  sized by the ignition switch with the car front wheels turned aside (usually happens when you park up a hill) or when one of the front wheels is pushed against something (e.g. pavement rock). In this case, try shifting the sized steering wheel to the sides left and right at the same time as gently jiggling the ignition gripping the key - this may help to release the steering column.
</p> <h5>Empty car battery</h5> <p> Another frequent reason why your ignition cylinder may not work is a problem with the car battery. An empty car battery might be due to alternator failure or electronic wiring. When the dash board lights will not turn on when you turn the key in the ignition, presumably you need to call a car mechanic shop.
The ignition lock is remarkably critical component of any car and containing quite a few tiny units that can be wearisome to inspect by a non-experience hands, so the only thing an owner can do bumping into ignition switch or key complications is to double-check you’re in fact trying to turn on your own car and ask a motor vehicle lockman to come out to your premise to reprogram, repair  replace the ignition or key which will priced as about $145–$349.
Transponder key make
As a result of the increasing rates of car theft back 2 decades ago, majority of auto manufacturers since nearby 1995 implement electric locks and key using chipped key, PATS or vehicle anti theft keys.
Although chipped key is very handy, copying is no longer a quick, very competitive price drive to the provincial hardware store or dealer. Events such as stolrn transponder chip key, misplacing your smartkey at the beach or dead key fob battery, the key has to be properly compiled to the engine control module and some vehicles dispenses outline for on board key copy and will cost nearby 180-600$ conforming to maker, model and year.
Mazda 3 smart key
Smartkeys are a superior in car user convenience and comfort, you are able to unlock and lock your doors besides running the car – without even inserting the key. You merely need to carry it on yourself, either in your handbag or purse.
As soon as the car user walk by their motor vehicle, they’re recognized by a matched RF transponder located inside the keyless entry. The doors unlock and open when the car user pulls the handle. The car bursts with the touch of a button on the dashboard. The button is taking the place of the mechanical key by closing the circuit on the car fuel pump.
Locking the car doors when leaving is just as effortless. The car user only clicks a toggles on the door lock handle – some smartkeys even automatically locks as soon as the car user walks out of range.
Copy vs lost car keys
Car keys nowadays cost much more then $1.50 mechanical keys at a nearest walmart or home depot store. Present-day Mazda 3 keys evolve into computerized  laser cut, flip key, keyless entry and fobic-key incorporating chipped keys that should be programmatically synced with computer equipment to the motor vehicle immobilizer. If the vehicle computer unit doesn't identify a compatible key, the fuel pump will block and the car will not crank. This infrastructure serves as a security measurement safeguarding the car will forget a stolen or misplaced key.
While dash-board platform is applicable on several earliest vehicles to smoothly duplicate keys, in most cases to get another key copied, the transponder in the key need to be programmatically synced by a specific programming machine carried by the dealership or a locksmith which normally cost relatively $50-$125 on top of the cost of the blank-key.
A lost or stolen key to a motor vehicle is entirely different occasion, because the vehicle computer need to be re-synced to accept the new key and refuse the lost key which actually means that you’ll have call a mobile vehicle lock man or tow your vehicle to the dealer-ship.
Utilizing this practice serves as a security measurement safeguarding the car will forget the stolen or misplaced key, yet lost key made, interface applicable solely to a licensed locksmith or the Mazda 3 dealer-ship and accordingly will priced as around $175–$250.

Golden State Killer suspect to plead guilty - Los Angeles Times
In a moment his victims have long awaited, a 74-year-old former police officer who terrorized California as the Golden State Killer began pleading guilty to a long list of charges Monday in a university ballroom turned courtroom.
Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., clad in orange jail clothing and wearing a clear protective face shield, sat onstage at Cal State Sacramento, with cameras projecting his face onto the ballroom wall so all could see — bringing the Golden State Killer case to a close with more spectacle than court decorum.
DeAngelo scarcely spoke during the early part of the hearing, only answering questions from Superior Court Judge Michael Bowman in a shaky “yes” or “no.”
The plea hearing was scripted, allowing no room for ad-libbed confessions. DeAngelo is expected to admit guilt to 13 murders, 13 charges of kidnapping for purposes of robbery — the only crimes he is charged with — as well as some 62 other crimes of rape and abduction for which the statutes of limitations long ago expired.
The crime series ran from at least 1973 to 1986 and involved attacks on some 106 children, men and women. Fifty women were raped. Thirteen people were killed.
Sacramento County Assistant Chief Deputy Dist. Atty. Thien Ho called the crimes “simply staggering” in scope.
“His monikers reflect the sweeping geographical impact of his crime,” Ho said, adding, “each time, he escaped — slipping away silently into the night, leaving communities terrified for years.”
Detectives did not have a final named suspect until 2018, when they used crime-scene DNA and genealogy services to identify the killer’s cousin and then, finally, DeAngelo.
Sitting in a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department interview room hours after his arrest, Ho said DeAngelo spoke to himself, saying: “I did all those things. I’ve destroyed all their lives. So now, I’ve got to pay the price.”
Prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty — the main request made by DeAngelo’s public defenders. In return for his guilty plea, DeAngelo will be sentenced to prison for the rest of his life.
The public will also be spared years of criminal proceedings, which prosecutors estimated could have cost more than $20 million. There will be no need for testimony by scores of rape victims, family members of those murdered and DeAngelo’s three daughters and ex-wife.
District attorneys from the eight counties prosecuting DeAngelo took the stage Monday to read into the record descriptions of the crimes.
As details about the murders of two other victims — Greg Sanchez and Cheri Domingo — were read aloud, Cheri’s daughter, Debbie Domingo, stood to face DeAngelo.
Jennifer Carole also stood, hands gripped behind her back, as the 1980 bedroom murders of her father and stepmother, Lyman and Charlene Smith, were described. She took off her mask so she could be seen, but did not make eye contact with DeAngelo.
Afterward, retired Sacramento County sheriff’s Det. Carol Daly stepped up to give Carole a hug.
DeAngelo’s whispery voice and wheelchair did not evoke any sympathy from Carole.
“Rest assured, it’s still an act,” she said, echoing the opening statement by prosecutors who said DeAngelo briefly feigned insanity when arrested for shoplifting in 1979 and suggested his statements of an alter ego when he was arrested in 2018 were conjured.
Six family members of Janelle Cruz, DeAngelo’s last known victim, stood together to confront him as he pleaded guilty to murder and admitted raping the 18-year-old.
Cruz was bludgeoned to death in 1986 with what detectives believe was a pipe wrench that had been stolen from the family’s backyard days earlier.
DeAngelo appeared to look down, not returning their gaze.
He again looked down as four relatives of Brian and Katie Maggiore, chased down and shot while taking an evening stroll in Rancho Cordova, stood just feet away from the raised stage where DeAngelo and his lawyers sat.
“How do you plead to that sir?” the judge asked. DeAngelo turned to his lawyer for a prompt, paused briefly before answering, “Guilty.”
All the women who were raped were referred to as “Jane Doe,” a decision that was criticized before the hearing by some who seek to be shed of decades of social stigma over their attacks.
“I don’t want that,” said Kris Pedretti, who was 15 when she became the 10th victim of a serial predator operating in the suburbs of Sacramento and known then as the East Area Rapist. “I want to be seen as a real person that he did this to and not as some Jane Doe.”
The Sacramento County district attorney’s office told Pedretti the decision had been made for her, she said, but conceded her request to be allowed to stand during the hearing when her 1976 attack is mentioned.
“We don’t have anything to be ashamed of, so we can stand up and he can take a look at us,” Pedretti said. “We’re not afraid of him. I think that’s more powerful than us staying seated and being a Jane Doe. Because, if he looks out, he doesn’t know who is who. He will today.”
While details about how DeAngelo had raped her were being read, Jane Carson-Sandler walked up to the edge of the stage to face DeAngelo squarely. He did not look at her.
Other victims silently cried, dabbing their eyes with tissue they had brought with them.
Because of COVID-19 spacing requirements, the proceeding was moved to the ballroom at Cal State Sacramento, the school from which DeAngelo received a criminal justice degree in 1972. The audience was composed almost entirely of victims and their families, with spaces awarded by lottery for 27 members of the media.
Unlike the mock court proceedings held in Sacramento school gymnasiums, the ballroom was not laid out to resemble a courtroom.
The judge, defendant and lawyers faced an audience of nearly 200 and banks of television cameras. Large projection screens displayed the faces of those at the podium, much like at a political rally. The hearing was livestreamed by Sacramento County Superior Court, a national true-crime entertainment network and multiple news programs.
“All that’s missing are the lions,” said one anonymous court official.
There was one notable empty chair in the ballroom — that of Phyllis Henneman, the first-recognized victim of the East Area Rapist. Henneman, who has been battling cancer for the past year, was admitted to the hospital over the weekend.
Nearly 40 victims and family members rose and stood silently to face DeAngelo when it came time to read the charges for the 1976 rape of Henneman.
Judicial experts said there is little the courts can do to stop such hoopla from forcing a balancing act between 1st Amendment rights to public access and 6th Amendment rights to a fair trial.
“It’s the reality of today’s world,” said U.S. District Senior Judge Reggie B. Walton, who presided over the 2007 perjury trial of former White House aide I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, covered by news outlets across the world, and who most recently ruled on U.S. Department of Justice censorship of the highly politicized Robert S. Mueller III report.
“That’s just something that courts have to adapt to and put in place — processes that make the proceedings accessible to all of those who are concerned but at the same time, not letting that accessibility impact on the obligation to be fair to both sides,” Walton said.
“It’s a challenge, but I don’t think it’s impossible.”
Trials such as this fed a public appetite for drama long before there was reality television programming.
“We watched O.J., both the Bronco chase and the trial, like it was on HBO,” said Benjamin Holden, a lawyer-turned-reporter who covered the 1995 Los Angeles double murder trial of former football star O.J. Simpson and now teaches media law at the Illinois College of Media. “Not only are we to be burdened with this affliction of entertainment rearing its ugly head in the courtroom, we probably always have.”
From beginning to end, the crimes involving DeAngelo played out in the public eye.
The East Area Rapist drew so much media attention that he caused a public panic, prompting citizen patrols, bounties and a run on sales of guns, door locks and guard dogs. Midway through the series of rapes, detectives believe, the attacker began to feed off that public hysteria, and he began to instruct victims to pass on death threats to the police and future victims.
DeAngelo was fired from his Auburn, Calif., police job in 1979 after he was caught shoplifting. The murders that ensued as he and his wife moved to Southern California — again involving bedroom attacks and rapes — at first went unconnected. The unknown assailant was given new local nicknames: the Diamond-Knot Killer and the Night Stalker, later changed to Original Night Stalker after another serial killer took that sobriquet.
Advances in forensic DNA changed the case dramatically. In 2001, detectives were able to link the attacks up and down the state.
Homicide experts said serial killers themselves often have no insight into their crimes, and often blame them on external forces.
“At their core, serial killers are manipulative, egocentric, disingenuous, dysfunctional, unreliable and mean-spirited,” said Enzo Yaksic, founder of the Atypical Homicide Research Group, a national network of law enforcement, forensic psychiatrists and others who study serial killers. “It is their own personalities that lead others to ostracize them, which in turn urges the serial killer to adopt a negative worldview. Serial killers grow accustomed to being on the fringe of society and come to enjoy the duality of their lives.”
The crime spree became media fodder again as a television series, then was picked up by a Los Angeles writer, Michelle McNamara, who re-branded the perpetrator as the Golden State Killer and marketed a book on her attempts to chronicle, and perhaps solve, the crimes.
A 2016 decision by unnamed investigators at the Orange County Sheriff’s Department to break the chain of custody and allow McNamara to take home 37 boxes of case files and two bins of evidence has now become fodder for legal challenges against the law enforcement agency. The defense lawyer for a man serving life in prison for another DNA-solved rape and murder cited the evidence breach to support his own allegations of laxity and misconduct within the county crime lab.
The defense lawyer said McNamara’s research assistant told him the case files were returned to Orange County after McNamara’s sudden death in April 2016, before the release of her book, which has been turned into an HBO series. The first episode aired Sunday, and the series is to conclude just before DeAngelo’s sentencing in August.
Victims have been told to prepare impact statements to be read aloud during proceedings expected to last a week before DeAngelo’s sentence is declared.

In the kaiju circles I usually run in, we tend to refer to the period between (and including) 2007 and 2012 as the “wilderness years”, i.e., a time when the output of new, original kaiju media reached a significant low. That’s not to say there wasn’t anything new – independent films like Deep Sea Monster Raiga and Geharha, the Dark and Long-Haired Monster gained attention in 2009, while the omnipresent Ultraman franchise quietly but steadily beat on against the popular current. Perhaps the perceived lack of output is not the reason we refer to these years the “wilderness” – there was almost at least one new production for each of the aforementioned years. Rather, the wildly varying quality of this period’s output is a more likely explanation. An even bigger contributing factor may be the lack of a big name franchise to anchor this period, with Godzilla having gone on self-imposed retirement in 2004, and a new Gamera franchise failing to take off after 2006’s Gamera the Brave.
In the 1960s, the presence of Toho and Daiei’s mega-franchises allowed competing studios to throw their hats into the kaiju ring – Nikkatsu offered up Gappa, the Triphibian Monster (1967), Toei introduced us to The Magic Serpent (1966), and crashing down to Earth came The X From Outer Space (1967), from Shochiku. With Godzilla and Gamera raking in mega-bucks at the box office, these alternative offerings were able to bask in reflected glory. However, between 2007 and 2012 no such big franchises existed, and while Ultraman persisted, his popularity and box office draw was the lowest it had been since the franchise was resurrected with Ultraman Tiga (1996). During Godzilla’s Millennium series (1999 to 2004), Japanese filmgoers became fatigued with the varying quality of each successive production, and eventually grew tired of giant monster action on the big screen. Gamera’s attempted resurrection in 2006 never stood a chance – the climate simply rendered it moot.
The “wilderness years” nonetheless represent something relatively unique in the history of the kaiju genre: a surprisingly high number of kaiju comedies were produced in this time. Much like the spaghetti-western in the ‘70s, perhaps kaiju filmmakers sought to keep the genre alive by introducing over-the-top comedic elements to the traditional genre structures in the search for something fresh and new. The first of the big kaiju comedies was Hitoshi Matsumoto’s Big Man Japan, released in 2007. Something of an absurdist deconstruction of the “giant hero” genre, the film features Matsumoto himself as a deadbeat loser with no friends, strained relationships with his few family members, and a lifestyle just above the poverty line – and who can transform into a giant to combat kaiju attacks. In a highly surrealistic ending – even by this film’s standards – Big Man Japan even manages to make a statement about Japan’s uneasy relationship with its superpowered ally, the United States. Acting as something not unlike a kaiju play on This is Spinal Tap!, Big Man Japan is perhaps not the most accessible kaiju comedy for Western viewers, but is certainly at least something entirely new for the genre during a time when it desperately needed exactly that.  However, for every This is Spinal Tap!, there’s sure to be a Superhero Movie, or Epic Movie, or…
Minoru Kawasaki’s Monster X Strikes Back! Attack the G-8 Summit – a satirically flaccid attempt to parody the leaders of the free world – could not have come at a worse time. Resurrecting the monster Guilala from The X From Outer Space after an absence of 41 years on the screen, the film makes two tardy fundamental errors: coming along after Godzilla and Gamera were both discharged from active duty, and reviving a one-shot monster that hadn’t been seen on the big screen (in any non-stock footage cameo capacity) for four decades – even then, that was during what was practically the complete opposite of the wilderness years: the “Kaiju Boom” of the 1960s. 2008 also saw the release of Great Decisive Battle! Superior Ultraman 8 Brothers, the 20th theatrically released Ultraman movie. Featuring return appearances from characters that spanned 40 years of the franchise, the film is a very fine one, but ultimately falls into the pitfall that so many Ultraman features do: overdependence on the audience’s familiarity with the franchise’s rich history. This problem is especially highlighted by the fact that the film largely takes place in an alternate universe with equally alternate versions of otherwise familiar characters.
2009 was somewhat kinder to the kaiju genre, with a generally more favourable slew of features seeing release. Shinpei Hayashiya, responsible for the legendary fan-film Gamera 4: Truth (2003), released the second film in his Reigo/Raiga series, Deep Sea Monster Raiga. A sequel to 2005’s Reigo: The Deep Sea Monster vs. the Battleship Yamato, the film – to put it lightly – is an uneven one, and suffers from a wildly irregular tone and some flat attempts at humour. Nonetheless, Hayashiya’s adoration of the genre shines through enough to make the film at least an enjoyable one. An even more affectionate tribute to the genre shines through in the 20-minute short Geharha: The Dark and Long-Haired Monster. Featuring direct homages to the likes of Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965) and The Mysterians (1957), Geharha benefits from a brisk running time and breakneck humour, all the while being careful not to mock the genre itself, but just affectionately have fun with it. Director Kiyotaka Taguchi would – very deservedly - go on to anchor the Ultra series’ return to glory, working on the television productions Ultraman Ginga (2013), Ultraman X (2015), Ultraman Orb (2016), and their movie counterparts.
The same cannot be said for Tomoo Haraguchi’s Death Kappa (2010). Produced with noble intentions – to film a new, original kaiju film created entirely through the use of traditional tokusatsu effects techniques – Death Kappa is nothing short of a trainwreck of a movie. Much of the humour is detrimentally absurd, and some jokes commit the cardinal sin of actually making fun of the genre and techniques it claims to be paying homage to. Haraguchi’s intentions were certainly commendable, but the finished product ranks among the very worst of the kaiju genre and – somewhat dishearteningly – is a film that betrays its own modus operandi. Haraguchi’s efforts (or lack thereof) are doubly disappointing considering he previously worked on the outstanding special effects of Gamera: Guardian of the Universe (1995), and Gamera 2: Advent of Legion (1996). Aside from cameos from future Shin Godzilla directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, Death Kappa is ultimately a film best left forgotten about, and most likely will be.
The “wilderness years” saw the release of two further Ultraman films: 2009’s Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legends! The Movie, and its direct sequel Ultraman Zero: The Revenge of Belial in 2010. Both films are among the very best of the theatrical Ultra series, and thrust the franchise’s visuals lightyears forward by heavily combining traditional tokusatsu effects with substantial helpings of green-screen and CGI. While gratuitous green-screen photography can look ugly when used in excess, the vast space opera-esque lsndscapes richly brought to life in these two Ultra-films are a testament to Tsuburaya Productions’ willingness to try new things to ensure their most iconic franchise remains relevant, fresh, and most importantly, fun, without ever betraying or abandoning the core dynamics and conceits of the franchise.
Among these uneven times, however, emerges a diamond in the rough: 2009’s Demeking, the Sea Monster, a theatrical adaptation of a popular 1991 manga by Takashi Imashiro. Despite what could be argued a misleading title, Kotaro Terauchi’s film is a quietly beautiful meditation on the importance and inevitability of accepting the responsibilities that come with growing up. The sea (in actuality, space) monster of the title only appears in a magnificently shot dream sequence – something the film has received frustratingly undeserved scorn for from the wider Western kaiju community – and this is absolutely to the film’s benefit. Demeking becomes a coming-of-age subversion of the genre itself: a kaiju movie without a kaiju, or at least the literal physical appearance of one within the film’s internal world. While certainly not for the average viewer who is simply looking to enjoy a traditional kaiju romp, Demeking is a woefully underrepresented movie that stands out as the crowning jewel of a difficult period in the genre’s history.
It’s worth mentioning that these “wilderness years” also saw Heisei Godzilla special effects director Koichi Kawakita release his short film The God of Clay, while in 2009 the independent feature Daikaiju Eiga “G” saw release. All was not quiet on the Western front with the highly-secretive release of Cloverfield, while on Japanese television, Tsuburaya Productions released Ultraseven X, two seasons of Ultra Galaxy: Mega Monster Battle, and the compilation clip-show Ultraman Retsuden. 2010’s Daimajin Kanon reintroduced Daiei’s stone idol in a serialised television format, with mixed degrees of success.
The wilderness ended in 2013, which saw the seeds of the current kaiju renaissance being planted. Guillermo Del Toro’s mechs-against-monsters epic Pacific Rim paved the way for Legendary’s MonsterVerse, the Ultra franchise returned to television and begun its current successful streak with Ultraman Ginga and Neo Ultra Q, with each subsequent series proving more successful than the last. Minoru Kawasaki also released his second kaiju feature, Earth Defence Widow – but the least said about that, the better. As previously posited, these “wilderness years” can be defined not by their lack of kaiju productions, but perhaps instead by the absence of a steady ongoing franchise to anchor the period, and the inconsistent quality of the content these years did produce. However, regardless of the value of the period as a whole, the ragtag group of productions that formed the “wilderness years” kept the flame of the kaiju genre burning long enough for it to be rekindled with the widespread genre resurgence enjoyed today.

Emma - 2009 because Romola Garai is a comic genius and also fuck Gwenyth Paltrow and also Mark Strong I’m sorry but whoever gave you those sideburns needs to go sit in the corner and think about what they’ve done. Which is a pity because the earlier Emma adaptations have my preferred Harriet Smiths in Samantha Morton and Toni Collette. Special mention to Clueless.
Northanger Abbey - special mention to the power-chord guitar shitshow from the 1980s but beyond the craic it’s unwatchable on repeat viewings, so 2007.Mansfield Park - 1999, Patricia Rozema did great work with tetchy source material and made a great film THAT BOOK IS UNFILMABLE JUST SAYIN anyway I’ll defend her artistic choices to anyone who cares to meet me in the parking lot in hand-to-hand combat. Hearteyes for Frances O’Connor.
Persuasion - 1995, best of all adaptations, would lie down in the middle of the road for this understated, sweaty bit of glory.
Pride & Prejudice - I know this one is one of the most divisive and contentious bits of Discourse ever to exist among nerds as there are just MORE to pick from and it’s the novel most people are familiar with. SO I will just say that I have Strong Opinions on all of them but for BEST it’s kind of picking from among adaptations which have all disappointed me in some way so I’ll say if you were to COMBINE the better elements of both the 1995 miniseries for timing and thoroughness with the 2005 feature film for artistry and visuals (and don’t come at me handwaving #aesthetic as though it’s not important, because that’s what cinema IS, and lighting/framing/visual cues are SO SO SO important when telling a story through film!) then you’d probably have something I’d feel comfortable calling The Best. On their own, neither truly satisfies me.Know what? Fuck it, Bridget Jones’s Diary is my favourite adaptation of P&P. Bride & Prejudice is also very good. I saw it three times in theatres, including once by myself, and have no regrets whatsoever.

Which chick movie do you think the Eldarya guys would (really, really, in a embarrassing way) love?
This was a fun request. ^u^
It’s just a shame that Idon’t know that many chick-flicks, so I included a few male-POV romances toround this out. I tried my best. :(
So, assuming that the guyswere spirited away to the 20th - 21st century humanrealm, and grew up here watching our movies…
Nevra
Are you kidding? He knows all the chick-flicks! Growing up with akid sister, he used to watch at least one romance a week. (Frankly, this started out as a way to keep her out oftrouble on weekends, but it morphed into a routine once she entered her tweens. Now, they still meet up for movie marathons every few weeks. It’s theirguilty pleasure.)
He is definitely not ashamedof watching chick movies. Their stories generally have more character and heartthan, say, testosterone-pumped action flicks that all guys are ‘supposed’ towatch. Not to mention that women’s movies have a much higher proportion of eye candy because of the female lead’sscreen time…
But the biggest real life benefit?Knowing and liking chick-flicks is a boonwhen a guy is picking up a date. You all wonder why Nevra is so popular withwomen? Blame his sister for training him up on their entertainment.
What he enjoys:
Powerful and ambitious, but flawed heroes with initially zero chance of ‘getting the girl’… and gettheir hearts stomped on at least once. Their common Achilles heel:loneliness.
Plucky, but innocentheroines who unknowingly hold the power to twist their man’s heart. And ifthey’re smoking-hot on the screen, he’s got another good reason to watch themovie.
Power-games, schemes, and corporate backstabbing shenanigans, where there is no clear dividebetween wrong and right.
Snappy dialogue witha cynical touch
(Crazily) balancing life’s priorities: first sacrificing love on the altar for ambition, power, reputation, etc. And then sacrificing more to get it back.
Redemption andforgiveness for the lead(s).
Personaltransformation in order to get ahead in life, and then again to win or save arelationship. (i.e. rags-to-riches Cinderella themes)
High-budget movieswith A-list actors; he likes qualityentertainment, thank you. He’ll also watch anything with Harrison Ford init.
Favorite ‘chick’ movies:
Sabrina (the1995 remake): This movie embodies everything Nevra loves in a romantic-comedy.He loves the story, the dialogue, and all the actors. But he reallyfeels for the hero Linus (quote from the movie: ‘the world’s only living heartdonor’), who starts off seducing the heroine to save his family’s businessinterests and his brother’s engagement, only to fall in love with her. Then gets the door slammed in his face once the love-of-his-life learns hisreasons and leaves the country. …What? He swears that has never happened to him before.
The Devil Wears Prada (2006): This is more of a laugh-fest for Nevrathan a romance. Keeping your head above water using your wits in NYC, whilescurrying around for an ultra-glamorous, fire-breathing boss with personalissues? Andy isn’t the typical heroine he likes to follow, but he sure wisheshe has an employee like her. But he is nota fire-breathing boss! What are you implying?
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast(1991): You read that correctly. Whether animated, live-action, or on Broadway, this classic holds a firm place in Nevra’s heart. This is also the one moviehe’s embarrassed to love. He was skeptical first at watching aG-rated movie—Karenn had dragged him to see it when she was a kid–, but he wasthe one who teared up when the Beast released Belle, thus doominghimself to life as a pariah and monster. (His mental dialogue during thatscene: “Of course he had to let her go! He loved her!”. His mental dialoguelater when the lynch mob arrived: “You bastards! Leave him alone! Hasn’t hesuffered enough?!”) Nevra still gets a reaction when Karenn starts humming theBeast’s solo– ‘If I Can’t Love Her’– from the musical.
Ezarel
Chick-flicks?Ugh! Spare him the torture! There must be other types of brainlessentertainment you can subject him to.
Ezarel won’t be caught deadwatching a romantic-comedy. Not unless it’s a very quirky, nontraditional, indie movie that’s more bittersweet than sentimental, makes fun of its owncharacters, and isn’t exclusively told from the female POV. That way, he’ll sayhe’s watching a screwball comedy instead. (So it has a little romance in it. What movie doesn’t, these days?)
What he enjoys:
A cast ofcompletely-flawed, borderline obnoxious characters, who rarely get what theydeserve (good or bad).
An underdog leadingman (or woman), who’s the only smart one in the movie and frequently a lonelyoutcast. (He will not tolerate anair-headed protagonist.)
Fast-paced trollingdialogue, non-stop sarcastic humor, and screwball jokes. Pranks are a bonus.
Realisticrelationships (i.e. with all the ugly baggage, awkwardness, and confusion thathappen in real life).
The constant struggleto overcome distance, misunderstanding, and social obstacles. (i.e. the ideathat people are completely unreliable, and that romance never makes sense.)
Unrequited love andbittersweet endings.
Breaking movietraditions and the fourth wall. If a movie is serious from start-to-finish, andasks him to suspend disbelief for 90+ minutes, then Ez practically fallsasleep.
Cult classics. A-Listblockbusters are pretentious, and plain boring.Give him weird animations, weirder stories, and bizarre camera angles anyday.
Favorite Romantic Comedies:
Annie Hall(1977): Ezarel adores Woody Allen, and this movie is seen as ‘The Romance’ inhis collection. He can watch this film over and again just to catch allthe references and in-jokes. He also turns to this movie for general lessons onhow to cope with relationships. And you all wonder why he’s so salty.
What If (2013):One of the few modern romances with a happy ending that still has Ezarellaughing out of his seat. He knows the friend-zone very well, and how it’seasier (and more dignified) to stay there rather than to try to climb out. He certainly does not hope that what happens to Wallacehappens to him one day. He’ll gladly live life without falling for a friend andgetting punched down the stairs.
Amelie (2001):He always turns beet-red when someone catches him watching this classic.Because he only watches it for the pranks and the deadpan narration, he swears! All right, so he feels a bit sorry for the quirky outcasts Amelie and Nino too,and he sort of likes the convoluted, pinball-machine way they finally find eachother. It doesn’t mean he enjoys thatlast, sugary scene of them laughing together like idiots on a bike. Tch. You never saw him watch this movie.
Valkyon
He’s quite neutral on romanticcomedies. To him, it’s just another movie genre that doesn’t fall on his listof favorites. Why spend 90+ minutes on a handful of little arguments that can technicallybe resolved in just 15 minutes? He doesn’t get it.
So the only romantic elementthat he can enjoy is if it’s tangled into a greater conflict that heunderstands. Like war, penance, and exile. That’s when it really hits home for him. (This also means that Valkyon is actually the weakest of the three guys for stories about‘true love’, so long as they’re packaged as epic sagas.)
What he enjoys:
True heroes/heroines,who weather the curve-balls life throws at them without complaining, and try to hold onto their honor despite trying times.
Turbulent, large-scaleconflicts, but where there is still a clear divide between what’s wrong andright on the individual scale. (i.e. war dramas)
Crossing cultures andborders, and adapting to difficult new circumstances.
‘Pure love’ that is more seen and implied than spoken and argued about. And which enduresboth time and distance, despite great forces tearing the couple apart.
Dramatic reunions.
Tragic endings.
Sweeping landscape shots and vistas. (Really, it’s the best way to immerse the audience in the story.)
Historical accuracy. The story may be fictional, but it shouldn’t completely abandon reality; otherwise it’s pure fantasy orpropaganda. In the end, the most powerful stories come from real life.
Favorite (romantic) movies:
‘Atonement’ (2007):His favorite romance of all time, hands down. It’s also the most tragic film hehas ever seen. Don’t bother taking him to see the next installment in ‘FiftyShades’; this movie has inoculated Valkyon against all cheery/sexy romanticfilms. Most other romances are just so… pettycompared to what happened between Cecilia and Robbie. Other screen-writers shouldstart putting in more themes of loss in their plots.
‘Zero Motivation’(2014): The only real ‘chick flick’that Valkyon actually likes, because it’s such a spot-on portrayal of the screwylife of military recruits (like the ones he commands). The first time he sawit, he smiled knowingly to himself throughout the whole movie. Because he haspersonally seen all the pranks, the sassing to superior officers, and thebarracks feuds that erupt from boredom, stress, a general refusal to getalong, and well, exactly zero motivation. It’s even funnier to see it up on thesilver screen.
‘The Last Samurai’(2003): This movie used to be number one on Valkyon’s list… until someone broke it tohim that real samurai are a lot less romantic and used guns by the time theywere disbanded. That’s why he’s embarrassed to admit that he still loves thisfilm. In fact, the ‘armoring’ scene between Capt. Algren and the samurai’swidow he fell for, prior to the suicidal battle, had him squeezing his date’shand very hard in the dark of the movie theater (result: they yelped loudenough to disturb the whole row). Even now, Valkyon firmly believes that thescreenwriter meant for the captain toremain in Japan and find her again after the war.
Edit: Whoops. Did you just say chick movie? As in, one? Looks like I went overboard again. >_> Nuts.

University Facts In The World wide Info Financial system
http://topicsofnote.com/?p=6416&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr
Results in for problem in college instruction ...
According to a report entitled "Economic Effect Of The Achievement Gap In America's Educational institutions" by the consulting agency of McKinsey & Co., attainment degrees are declining in the United States although at the exact time bettering in other nations.
For example:
In 1995, the United States was tied for initial in faculty and college graduation charges - but by 2006, the state experienced dropped to 14th
Forty several years back, the United States experienced just one of the best stages of higher college attainment - but in 2006, it rated 18th out of 24 industrialized nations in high college graduation
In 1970, the United States experienced 30% of the globe's college or university graduates - but nowadays, it has less than 15%
In accordance to McKinsey & Co., Finland and Korea rated numbers 1 and 2 in PISA arithmetic assessments, and quantities 2 and 1 in PISA science exams in 2006, whilst the United States ranked numbers 25 and 24. The United States ranked range 18 in PISA looking at tests, and variety 29 in PISA trouble solving checks in 2003.
PISA is the Program For Global University student Assessment arranged by the Corporation For Economic Co-operation and Enhancement for 15 year olds all over the environment.
In accordance to the United Nations Education and learning Index, which is calculated by the adult literacy charge and the gross enrollment ratio, the United States rated amount 20 in 2007, with Australia, Denmark, Finland, and New Zealand jointly rated quantity 1.
In accordance to a report entitled "Measuring Innovation: A New Perspective" by the Group For Financial Co-operation and Advancement, the United States:
Rated quantity 3 in the share of patents submitted by firms beneath five several years outdated - with Norway ranked range 1 and Denmark ranked variety 2
Ranked range 11 in venture capital financial commitment as a proportion of GDP in 2008 - with Finland ranked variety 1 and Sweden rated number 2
Apparently more than enough, the final results are not dissimilar to Transparency Global's Corruption Perceptions Index. The nations around the world with the minimum perceived corruption consist of:
Denmark (rated 1)
New Zealand (ranked 2)
Finland (rated 4)
Sweden (rated 4)
Australia (ranked 8)
Norway (ranked 10)
United States (ranked 22)
Is the connection involving education and corruption connected to what values are taught in faculties or mainly because funds for education is diverted elsewhere, or each?
Results in for worry in the romantic relationship between instruction, entrepreneurship, the economy and work ...
Schooling, innovation, and entrepreneurship are vital drivers of the financial system, which in switch generates work options. Closing the achievement gap concerning the United States and leading accomplishing nations around the world (Finland and Korea) could include amongst $ 1.3 and $ 2.3 trillion to the United States' gross domestic product in accordance to McKinsey. In 2010, the United States' spending plan deficit is $ 1.3 trillion.
Some educators are worried that the United States' training system:
Destroys creativity and divergent thinking
Fails to teach little ones "how to study how to study"
Relies far too intensely on various selection testing as opposed to other approaches of assessment
Fails to promote teamwork - a crucial component for results in arts, sporting activities, and employment
Addresses the requires of the industrial age as it was eighty yrs ago or so, not the facts age as it is and will be in the upcoming
Is far more involved about building college professors than contributors to the foreseeable future financial system in the details age
The structure of the overall economy is modifying quickly by disintermediation induced by strengthening information, telecommunications, and transportation systems, which in flip lead to globalization:
Middle administration white collar work opportunities are getting eliminated due to the fact data technologies improves communication flows and general performance reporting from shop floors and entrance traces to executive management
Engineering white collar and shop floor blue collar positions are remaining eliminated due to the fact personal computer aided structure and manufacturing and process command systems demand fewer human intervention
Clerical white collar work opportunities are remaining eradicated since details technology is automating administrative and operational procedures
Blue collar positions are staying eradicated because producing can very easily be delivered offshore to lower expense producers that settle for types electronically, and then deliver items via innovative container transport ports and vessels
Improved offer and demand from customers chains on a worldwide foundation in between suppliers and close-shoppers have minimized the need to have for vertically integrated enterprises, doing away with work opportunities that will by no means be replaced. As globalization carries on, enterprises will continue on to consolidate to receive added benefits from overall economy of scale, thus producing additional position elimination.
Job generation is a outcome of entrepreneurship in emerging and expansion enterprises, and intrapreneurship in expansion and experienced enterprises. Without having entrepreneurship, jobs in new places of the economy will not be designed Without intrapreneurship, enterprises will slash charges and expenditures in buy to continue to be worthwhile, which usually means decline of work - not job development in present areas.
The consequence is that the workforce has to be reeducated to come to be information workers in a global information and facts-centered economy, and that all individuals have to be additional adept at marketing them selves in an environment of career uncertainty. Having said that, teamwork will be important as technology permits collaboration across functional units in enterprises, and amongst them across the world.
Youthful people today getting into the function place now have to be organized for lifelong studying simply because technological innovation will erode both of those present and long term work, specifically as robotics technologies turn into mainstream. They have to be ready to be self-adequate in the long term financial system since occupation and social safety as their mothers and fathers and grandparents realized it are less possible to exist.
Innovation has to be fostered to generate entrepreneurship to produce foreseeable future work. Fostering innovation suggests encouraging creativeness 1st in college units.
Mobile technology that can supply multimedia written content ubiquitously is quick becoming introduced into the marketplace, and is being assimilated by young individuals.
On line instruction and mastering techniques are getting launched into both of those public and private faculties, mainly delivered by way of desktop and laptop computers, both of those in college and at residence. Cell equipment are getting a auto for accessing on the web curricula, and now some schools are allowing their use in the classroom.
These types of technology can eliminate the want for textbooks, enable the college student to move forward at their have pace, keep track of development...at every single action in finding out the curriculum content material, and empower the teacher to tutor every single pupil independently. It can also hire interactive problem solving methods to stimulate significant pondering.
One instance of an on the internet discovering system is the Digital Classroom Suite from Schooling 2020, which is a world-wide-web-based, instructor-led instructional technique.
In accordance to a "meta-investigation" produced by the US Section of Training in 2009, online learning has definite rewards above face-to-deal with instruction. The review uncovered that learners who took section or all of their instruction on the internet carried out much better, on ordinary, than those people getting the very same program via deal with-to-facial area instruction only. In addition, individuals who took "blended" courses - those that combine features of each on line finding out and experience-to-deal with instruction appeared to do the most effective of all.
While this know-how can provide educational content for middle and superior university, college, and university curricula, according to 1 24 12 months previous tutor, "The kids get it. It's the mothers and fathers and academics that are frightened of it!"
Is addressing the achievement hole adequate?
Innovation is about producing new strategies creativeness is about bringing them into currently being - both of those things to do stem from vivid creativity. Without the need of innovation, it is not probable to locate new activities or greater approaches of doing current types Without having creativity, it is tough to adapt to new conditions.
Entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial actions are capabilities of attitude and motion: the frame of mind to transform impressive strategies into worth the action initiated from a willingness to acquire danger to realize the price.
Often it is vital to be erroneous in purchase to be right - achievement will come from classes learned from failure. Thomas Edison the moment declared that he experienced not unsuccessful when attempting to establish the light-weight bulb - he experienced just found 10,000 methods that would not do the job.
Will passing exams be ample preparing for the uncertainty of everyday living in the foreseeable future? Some educators believe that to encourage creativity and innovation, it is necessary for young children to develop dilemma fixing and important pondering expertise early in existence.
In accordance to DN Perkins, at the Harvard Graduate College of Education, the primary targets of schooling strive for retention, comprehension, and energetic use of awareness and expertise, but in actuality are really hard to obtain.
According to John M. Carroll in his guide "The Nürnberg Funnel," the traditional strategy of education is training or "instructionalism," where a instructor found in a regular classroom informs students about a distinct area (subject location). He suggests that discovering is the act of constructing understanding from info in the globe about the college student based on a discovering paradigm by Seymour Papert. Papert calls this paradigm "constructionism" in his challenge entitled "Constructionism: A New Possibility For Elementary Science Education and learning" and his guide entitled "Mindstorms: Little ones, Personal computers, and Powerful Ideas." Constructionists imagine that the knowledge is derived from mental exercise, whilst instructionalists view that the thoughts procedures and mirrors the planet. Papert's do the job is affected by thoughts from Jean Piaget, the father of constructivism , who argued that people crank out information and this means from an conversation between their encounters and their thoughts.
According to Edith Ackermann, constructivism gives a window as to what children are fascinated in and are equipped to reach, whilst constructionism focuses on studying to master, and creating points in learning.
Producing items is about designs of the real environment, which is what mathematical physics is all about.
Seymour Papert, Nicholas Negroponte, and Alan Kay released the One Notebook For each Boy or girl initiative to place constructionist finding out into exercise in the acquiring environment.
The Sugar "desktop surroundings," which is delivered with the Fedora operating program for XO personal computers used in the A person Notebook For each Baby initiative, and available for use on other platforms which includes Mac OS / X and Home windows, has been intended with the aim of remaining applied by children for discovering. This surroundings permits programs (regarded as pursuits) to be run that really encourage constructionist discovering. Sugar encourages trouble-fixing, collaborative finding out, and essential considering in little ones aged 6 by 12. Just one of the effects is that kids are discovering to method as early as 8 decades outdated.
Edubuntu is a free instruction-oriented operating method available to youngsters aged 6 through 18. It is created to enable educators with constrained technical awareness to established up an on line primary atmosphere with ease.
The Intel Laptop or computer Clubhouse Community is an international community of 100 clubhouses found in 20 nations supplies an out-of-university discovering natural environment for skills enhancement. Yasmin Kafai, Kylie Peppler, and Robbin Chapman explain the strategy in their ebook "The Personal computer Clubhouse: Constructionism and Creativity in Youth Communities." This initiative is aimed at delivering young persons with "realistic 21st century competencies."
Both equally instructionalism and constructionism approaches are needed to educate the curriculum approved nationally and create issue fixing and significant wondering skills vital for encouraging creativeness.
However, according to Theodore Levitt, creative imagination is contemplating up new points, innovation is performing new matters.
Creativeness is about thoughts, but innovation is about suggestions and productivity - the entrepreneur has to transform way of thinking (progressive thoughts) into action to accomplish price (innovation). The calls for on the faculty process are significant in terms of hoping to close the achievement gap and put together students with the expertise and expertise required for the entrepreneurial, progressive, and technological entire world of the information age.
Critical thoughts:
What variations ought to be manufactured to the curriculum? For instance, really should disciplines this sort of as computer programming, company administration, and individual finance be aspect of the baseline or discretionary?
What can be done to increase dilemma solving and vital considering techniques?
What modifications should be manufactured in educating methods? To what extent ought to online training solutions increase, coexist, or swap regular classroom solutions, and if so - how?
Really should the job of district leadership, directors, lecturers, moms and dads, and pupils change, and if so how?
Really should partnerships be set up in between educational facilities and corporations, so that learners have a far better appreciation of the traits of the rising place of work?
What can be carried out to be certain that equal option is supplied to all students such that they can make conclusions in their future professions and private life that are sustainable environmentally, economically, and socially?
Regardless of what the schooling method presents, it is vital that every personal just take cost of their very own careers, and recognize their competencies.

Mechanical megalomania (part 2 of 3)
Last we noted that, systemic developmental principles require robust and resilient solution frameworks having greater transparency, governance, equality and empathy, built-in1. In other words, a more aggressive Panarchy - which is a form of governance that encompass all others3 - universal or global governance4. It is suited for governance of trans-disciplinary, networked cultures, with intersecting concepts of ecology, technology and politics being accommodated. It draws from information theory, network theory, economics, sociology and complex systems5. Systems theory in turn, is an interdisciplinary field of science that studies the patterns or nature of complex systems of the physical world1. Researchers from this domain use the term as an antithesis to the word hierarchy6, suggesting it to be a superior framework based upon nature's rules6. This too is therefore seen as cross-disciplinary since it cuts across many types of systems and specialist areas1.The rural-urban migration challenge uses the notion of urban resilience, suggesting Cities in themselves are complex adaptive systems, containing many sub-systems like production systems, energy systems, road systems, suburbs, people, trees, etc. These sub-systems function together to give each City its unique features, which include resilience. Resilience thinking adopts an integrated systemic view of humans and ecosystems7. It has been used to describe the period it takes for a system to return to equilibrium, after being disturbed9. Integrating socio-ecological system needs have yielded four principles to build adaptive capacities8:
·      Accept change and uncertainty as inherent to life;
·      Embrace diversity or Variety for regenerative functions;
·      Combine different types of knowledge for enhanced learning;
·      Promote social-ecological sustainability;
Today’s pervasiveness and scale of connectivity create greater complex dynamics across domains7, which in turn influences counter-intuitive outcomes. The inability to observe these systemics, are directly related to our linearity in thought and practice that produce rigid, blind institutions, unable to halt skewed developmental outcomes1 whilst increasing vulnerabilities of our global socio-ecological system9. It is clear that our limitations regarding predictability are ill-understood and even ignored1. It may be linked to advances and widespread availability of information, giving false comfort in our actual scientific capacities to deal with unpredictability and change, thus making people more vulnerable to it1, 14. This can be seen in the current abuse of AI whereby unsuspecting consumers are rallied and marshalled into something they don’t truly understand. In truth we have been warned for centuries12-14, about fads and consumption that disallow genuine efforts of sustainable living7, 8. These fads feed our excessive leisure lifestyles at the expense of the ecosystem we rely upon for our very survival7,8. Only a mechanically driven, linear disposed minds can produce such great negative effects, and continue on its destructive trajectory – i.e. a mechanical megalomaniac?
