A Documented List of All of Ayrton Senna's and Gerhard Berger's Pranks on Each Other
Tumblr media
Source: this Reddit post (thank you deleted Reddit user, you're a real one)
For those who don't know, from 1990 to 1992, Berger and Senna were teammates, they also pranked each other constantly, pranks that were approved by Ron Dennis himself, here's a list of all the pranks and goofs they played on each other
The Briefcase Incident: During the Italian GP weekend, Senna and Berger were riding a helicopter over Monza, during the flight, Senna was showing off his new tailor made carbon fiber composite briefcase, Senna argued that because of it being carbon fiber, it would be impossible to destroy, Berger tested Senna's hypothesis by throwing the briefcase off the helicopter, the briefcase reportedly fell somewhere on the track and was retrieved
The Hose Incident: several days before the race, at a dinner that Senna and Berger attended, many people were getting thrown into the pool as a joke, Berger escaped and Senna ran away to his room, Berger chased him down, Senna threw a glass of water at him in self defense, now the game was on, Berger and the guests concocted an extension to a hose and slid it under his bedroom door at 3 in the morning, Senna jumped through the window to escape, according to Berger "it looked as if a bomb exploded in his room"
The Frog Incident: During their stay at Australia, Berger filled Senna's hotel room with 12 frogs, according to Berger, they were more like toads, Senna stormed to confront Berger, he said "i've spent an hour catching 12 frogs in my room" Berger replied "did you find the snake?", Senna responded by buying an extremely strong smelling French cheese, stuck into Berger's AC unit, and cranked it up
The Shaving Cream Incident: On the night of an important dinner with Honda Executives, Senna decided to fill Berger's shoes with shaving cream, forcing him to attend this important dinner with a tuxedo and running shoes, Berger tried to take revenge by mixing 4 sleeping pills into some orange juice the day of the Japanese GP, but the suspicious drink was denied, Note: some reports say that the drink was offered to Senna, others state it was offered to Maurício Gugelmin, a fellow Brazilian who was in on the original prank and was driving for Layton house at the time
The Passport Incident: possibly one of the funniest pranks, during a trip to Argentina, Senna's passport was checked, only to find his photo had been replaced with, according to Ron Dennis " an equivalent-sized piece of male genitalia" i.e a picture of cock and balls, this might seem hilarious to you, but airport security didn't find it funny, and Senna was detained for 24 hours, as revenge, Senna superglued all of Berger's credit cards together
Honorable mentions: The Pembrey Circuit Incident: During a test at Pembrey Circuit in Wales, a very small track with a confusing layout, Mclaren engineers purposely gave Senna wrong instructions on the correct layout of the track, after 3 laps, Senna storms back to his mechanics, yells "you funny fuckers" then did a 180 spin and drove 3 laps on the right layout
The Lancia Incident: during the first day of testing for the 1995 Season, now at Ferrari, Berger and Jean Alesi stole Jean Todt's Lancia Delta, and while riding around in it, Berger decided it would be funny to rip the handbrake, they crashed and flipped Jean Todt's car, Alesi had to be taken to the hospital, when Jean Todt asked Berger what happened to his car, Berger replied that he and Alesi had "put some slight curb marks on the roof"

After pushing entire family into crime, UP gangster Atiq Ahmed suffers blow with son's death
Atiq’s first interface with the police goes back to 1984 when he was booked for attempting a murder in Prayagraj
Tumblr media
LUCKNOW: Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad, awarded a life term in the Umesh Pal abduction case on March 28, got the biggest blow of his life when his third son, Asad, was killed in a police encounter on Thursday. It is the first personal loss he has suffered in his criminal history spanning four decades.
Police authorities said the murder of Umesh Pal hardly gave any tangible gain to Atiq and his gang. It was only a bid by his henchmen to re-establish fear among the people of Prayagraj. However, the move backfired big time. While Asad, 19, has now been killed, Atiq’s wife Shaista Parveen is still absconding. The third of the couple’s five sons, Asad was a first-year student at a law college.
The couple’s two elder sons -- Ali and Umar -- are jailed in other cases, while two minor ones are housed by the authorities in a shelter home.
Atiq’s first interface with the police goes back to 1984 when he was booked for attempting a murder in Prayagraj.
Five years later, he took the electoral plunge winning his first election as an MLA from Allahabad West, as an Independent in 1989. He retained his seat in the next two Assembly elections as well, also as an Independent.
In 1995, Atiq joined the Samajwadi Party (SP) and came to notice when the guesthouse where the then BSP general secretary Mayawati was staying with her party MLAs was attacked. MLAs and workers of the SP allegedly surrounded the guest-house and went on a rampage, angry over the BSP having broken ties with them.
In 1996, Atiq won from Allahabad West for the fourth time, as an SP candidate. Three years later, he joined Apna Dal, and in 2002, again won the seat. In 2004, he contested from Phulpur Lok Sabha seat on an SP ticket and got elected.
In 2004, in the bypoll held for the Allahabad West seat, after Atiq had moved to the Lok Sabha, BSP candidate Raju Pal defeated his brother Ashraf, fighting on an SP ticket. In January 2005, Raju Pal was gunned down, along with two of his associates, and Atiq was named as an accused along with Ashraf and others. While Atiq now has over 100 cases lodged against him, his brother Ashraf has 52 cases against him and is currently lodged in a Bareilly jail.
With the SP in power in the state at the time, on the Supreme Court’s orders, the case was transferred to the CBI. It filed a chargesheet in 2019 against 10 people.
Subsequently, Atiq got booked for a 2018 incident involving the alleged abduction of a businessman Mohit Jaiswal, who was taken to Deoria district jail, where Atiq was lodged at the time. Jaiswal claimed he was forced to sign documents for property worth Rs 48 crore in favour of his associates.
In the course of his journey into the world of crime and establishing himself as the head of a crime syndicate registered in police records as IS 227, Atiq pushed his entire family into it. His eldest son Mohammad Umar, who is currently lodged in a Lucknow district jail, is a co-accused in the Jaiswal case. His second son, Mohammad Ali Ahmad, is currently in Naini jail for alleged involvement in a case of assault on a property dealer in December 2021.
Apart from the Umesh Pal killing, his wife Shaista Parveen has had at least three other cases registered against her since 2019 under forgery and illegal arms at the Colonelganj police station in Prayagraj. The cases are pending in court, said a police officer.
While on the run, Shaista Parveen moved a local court in Prayagraj saying that the police had “illegally” taken away two of her minor sons – apart from the three named in police cases or in jail – on the evening of February 24 and that she had no information about them. The police later told a local court that the boys had been found in Prayagraj and were admitted to a child protection home.

9.9.2. Apology statements of Japanese Prime Ministers
Question 9: Korea's situation after Japan's withdrawal › 9. Apology statements made by Japan to South Korea › 2. Apology statements of Japanese Prime Ministers
Click here for table of contents
9.9.2. Apology statements of Japanese Prime Ministers
1.  On September 7, 1984, Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone said to President Chun Doo Hwan in a welcoming banquet hosted by the Prime Minister,
[ There was a period in this century when Japan brought about great suffering upon your country and its people. I would like to state here that the government and people of Japan feel deep regret for this error.]
2.  On May 25, 1990, Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu said to President Roh Tae Woo and the first lady in a welcoming banquet hosted by the prime minister,
[ I would like to take the opportunity here to humbly reflect upon how the people of the Korean Peninsula went through unbearable pain and sorrow as a result of our country’s actions during a certain period in the past and to express that we are sorry.]
3.  On January 16, 1992, Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa said in a banquet hosted by President Roh Tae Woo and the first lady,
[ We, the Japanese people, first and foremost, have to bear in our mind the fact that your people experienced unbearable suffering and sorrow during a certain period in the past because of our nation’s act, and to never forget the feeling of remorse. I, as a prime minister, would like to once again express our heartfelt remorse and apology to the people of your nation.]
4.  On January 17, 1992, Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa said at a policy speech (Japan-South Korea relationship in Asia and in the world) on a visit to South Korea,
[ What we should not forget about the relationship between our nation and your nation is the fact that there was a certain period in our thousands of years of exchange when we were the victimizer and you were the victim. I would like to once again express our heartfelt remorse and apology for the unbearable suffering and sorrow that you experienced during this period because of our nation’s act. Recently, the issue of the so-called ‘wartime comfort women’ is being brought up. I think that incidents like this are seriously heartbreaking, and I am truly sorry.]
5.  On August 23, 1993, Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa said in a policy speech to the House of Representatives,
[ We would like to take this opportunity to clearly express our remorse for the past and a new determination to the world. Firstly, at this occasion, we would like to express our deep remorse and apology for the fact that the invasion and colonial rule by our nation in the past brought about great suffering and sorrow upon many people. We would also like to show our determination through further contribution to world peace.]
6.  On September 24, 1993, Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa said at the 128th National Diet Session,
[ I used the expression war of aggression and act of aggression to express honestly my recognition that the act of our nation in the past brought about unbearable suffering and sorrow upon many people, and to express once again deep remorse and apology.]
7.  On August 31, 1994, Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama said in a speech on “Peace, Friendship, and Exchange Initiative”,
[ Japan’s action in a certain period of the past not only claimed numerous victims here in Japan but also left the peoples of neighboring Asia and elsewhere with scars that are painful even today. I am thus taking this opportunity to state my belief that Japan, based on my profound remorse for these acts of aggression, the colonial rule, and the like, caused such unbearable suffering and sorrow for so many people, and that Japan’s future path should be one of making every effort to build world peace in line with my no-war commitment. It is imperative for us Japanese to look squarely to our history with the peoples of neighboring Asia and elsewhere. Only with the solid basis of mutual understanding and confidence that can be built through overcoming the pain on both sides, can we and the peoples of neighboring countries make clear the future of Asia-Pacific together… On the issue of wartime ‘comfort Women’ which seriously stained the honor and dignity of many women, I would like to take this opportunity once again to express my profound and sincere remorse and apology. With regard to this issue as well, I believe that one way of demonstrating such feelings of apology and remorse is to work to further promote mutual understanding with the countries and areas concerned as well as to face squarely the past and ensure that it is rightly conveyed to future generations. This initiative has been drawn up consistent with such belief.]
8.  On June 9, 1995, the House of Representatives, National Diet of Japan, passed a resolution stating:
[ On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, this House offers its sincere condolences to those who fell in action and victims of wars and similar actions all over the world. Solemnly reflecting upon the many instances of colonial rule and acts of aggression in the modern history of the world and recognizing that Japan carried out those acts in the past, which includes inflicting pain and suffering upon the peoples of other countries, especially in Asia, the Members of this House express a sense of deep remorse.]
(So-called Resolution to renew the determination for peace on the basis of lessons learned from history)
9.  In July 1995, Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama said in a statement, [The problem of the so-called wartime comfort women is one such scar, which, with the involvement of the Japanese military forces of the time, seriously stained the honor and dignity of many women. This is entirely inexcusable. I offer my profound apology to all those who, as wartime comfort women, suffered emotional and physical wounds that can never be closed.]
10.  On August 15, 1995, Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama said on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the war’s end,
[ During a certain period in the not-too-distant past, Japan followed a mistaken national policy and dragged its own people into fateful crisis by following a path toward war, and through its colonial rule and aggression, caused tremendous damage and suffering to the people of many countries, particularly those of Asian nations. In the hope that no such mistake will be made in the future, I regard, in the spirit of humanity, these irrefutable facts of history, and express here once again my feelings of deep remorse and state my heartfelt apology.]
11.  On June 23, 1996, Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto said in a joint press conference with President Kim Young Sam in the first visit by a Japanese prime minister to South Korea that
[ Issues such as forced Japanization of Korean people’s names were not taught in our school but “it is beyond imagination how this injured the hearts of Korean people”… Also, as for the issue of comfort women, “Nothing injured the honor and dignity of women more than this and I would like to extend words of deep remorse and heartfelt apology”.]
12.  On August 28, 1997, Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto said in a speech made in Yomiuri International Economic Society,
[ I believe that Japan has learned its lessons from history and that the people of Japan widely share the view that we must learn from the past for the future, without forgetting what is behind us. The year before last, former Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama issued these words: “…through its colonial rule and aggression, [Japan] caused tremendous damage and suffering to the people of many countries, particularly those of Asian nations…I regard, in the spirit of humanity, these irrefutable facts of history, and express here once again my feelings of deep remorse and state my heartfelt apology.” I am of the same mind as the former Prime Minister…I myself was one of the ministers who was involved in drafting this statement.]
13.  On October 8, 1998, Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi apologized to President Kim Dae-jung who was visiting Japan as a state guest.
[ Looking back on the relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea during this century, Prime Minister Obuchi regarded in the spirit of humility the fact of history that Japan caused, during a certain period in the past, tremendous damage and suffering to the people of the Republic of Korea through its colonial rule, and expressed his deep remorse and heartfelt apology for this fact. President Kim accepted with sincerity this statement of Prime Minister Obuchi’s recognition of history and expressed his appreciation for it. He also expressed his view that the present calls upon both countries to overcome their unfortunate history and to build a future-oriented relationship based on reconciliation as well as good-neighborly and friendly cooperation. As a result of the meeting, the two leaders declared their common determination to raise, to a higher dimension, the close, friendly, and cooperative relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea which have been built since the normalization of their relations in 1965 so as to build a new Japan-Republic of Korea partnership towards the twenty-first century.]
(Japan-South Korea Joint Declaration: A New Japan-South Korea Partnership towards the Twenty-first Century)
14.  A letter from Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi to former comfort women
[ On the occasion that the Asian Women’s Fund, in cooperation with the Government and the people of Japan, offers atonement from the Japanese people to the former wartime comfort women, I wish to express my feelings as well. The issue of comfort women, with the involvement of Japanese military authorities at that time, was a grave affront to the honor and dignity of large numbers of women. As Prime Minister of Japan, I thus extend anew my most sincere apologies and remorse to all the women who underwent immeasurable and painful experiences and suffered incurable physical and psychological wounds as comfort women. We must not evade the weight of the past, nor should we evade our responsibilities for the future. I believe that our country, painfully aware of its moral responsibilities, with feelings of apology and remorse, should face up squarely to its past history and accurately convey it to future generations. Furthermore, Japan also should take an active part in dealing with violence and other forms of injustice to the honor and dignity of women.
Finally, I pray from the bottom of my heart that each of you will find peace for the rest of your lives.
Respectfully yours,
Junichiro Koizumi, Prime Minister of Japan
The year 2001]
15.  On August 15, 2005, Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said,
[ In the past, Japan, through its colonial rule and aggression, caused tremendous damage and suffering to the people of many countries, particularly to those of Asian nations. Sincerely facing these facts of history, I once again express my feelings of deep remorse and heartfelt apology, and also express the feelings of mourning for all victims, both at home and abroad, in the war… Japan’s post war history has indeed been six decades of manifesting its remorse on the war through actions…I believe it is necessary to work hand in hand with other Asian countries, especially with China and the Republic of Korea, which are Japan’s neighboring countries separated only by a strip of water, to maintain peace and pursue the development of the region. Through squarely facing the past and rightly recognizing the history, I intend to build a future-oriented cooperative relationship based on mutual understanding and trust with Asian countries.]
16.  On August 10, 2010, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said,
[ “I would like to face history with sincerity. I would like to have the courage to squarely confront the facts of history and the humility to accept them, as well as to be honest to reflect upon the errors of our own. Those who render pain tend to forget it while those who suffered cannot forget it easily. To the tremendous damage and sufferings that this colonial rule caused, I express here once again my feelings of deep remorse and my heartfelt apology”.]

Hell is For Children: Animorphs as Children’s Lit
[Guest post from Cates!]
So a couple of months ago Bug asked me to write a post about why Animorphs is Middle Grade/Children’s Fiction, not Young Adult. Since she asked, I’ve read several wonderful posts from other people questioning or explaining what the difference is between Middle Grade and Young Adult, where Animorphs fits, and why it matters. Here’s my two cents as a children’s literature scholar.
To start, Animorphs’ 20,000-30,000 word count per book is a big hint it’s not YA fiction. Obviously, a book with a low word count is not automatically a children’s book, and a book with a high word count is not automatically a book for adults. But if Animorphs was aimed at teens, Applegate would likely have been expected to make the books longer. While there are a lot of great YA novels that are as short as or shorter than your average Animorphs book (check out BookRiot’s list of 100 YA novels under 250 pages,) most YA series, and especially fantasy or scifi YA series, are expected to top 100,000 words. (The three books in the Diviners series by Libba Bray have a total wordcount of 520,000 words; Laini Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy tops 400,000 words, for example.)
Animorphs’ word count isn’t enough on its own to exclude the series from YA classification, but Animorphs’ short word count also fits the trend of children’s—not YA—series fiction in the 1990s. In order to understand this trend, and why it produced books specifically for children, not teens, we need to jump back in time to WWII. Because so many American men were drafted into the military, women took over jobs that had been almost exclusively done by men, like mechanics, sales, electricians, etc. When WWII ended, thousands of men returned home, but women didn’t leave the workforce. Realizing they had an excess of young men and not enough jobs, the US government created the GI Bill, allowing soldiers to attend college for free or at a steeply reduced cost, thus stemming the influx of workers and giving the economy and industry room to grow.
At the same time, families were having children (and those children were surviving) at an unprecedented rate. Thanks to the GI Bill, college was no longer something reserved for wealthy white men, but something available to the middle and even lower class. A college education offered social and economic mobility, and the Baby Boomers, children of the GI Bill recipients, became the first generation to grow up with the idea that college was something that could and should be pursued by all.
Then, the Baby Boomers began having children in the late 1970s through early 1990s, meaning a large chunk of those children (including Bug and I) were in elementary school in mid 1990s to early 2000s. Thanks to their parents, a higher percentage of American adults than ever before had attended college. Thanks to advancements in women’s medicine, psychology, sociology, and education, among other fields, people understood as never before the importance of instilling a love of reading in children at a young age. The huge middle class was willing to invest lots of time and money in their children’s educations, because at this point not having a college education was seen as a barrier to success.
I’m sure you can see where this is going. (Kidding).
Children’s publishing exploded in the 1990s because children—or, more accurately, their parents—were seen as a huge, untapped market. Previously, children’s publishing didn’t receive as much money or attention because, the logic went, children did not have money and therefore couldn’t buy books. But then the publishing industry realized that there were literally millions of parents willing to spend money on their children’s education, and publishers like Scholastic, Dutton, Dial, Penguin, Random House, and others rushed to take advantage of this new customer demographic.
Tumblr media
Of the ten books featured on this Scholastic bookfair poster from 2000, seven are series fiction.
Serialized fiction—ie, stories that took place over the course of several books about the same characters and/or in the same setting—was the perfect way for publishing houses to capitalize on this new market. And hoo boy was it successful. From 1993 to 1995, Goosebumps books were being sold at a rate of approximately 4 million books a month. That means roughly 130,000 books were sold every day.
Here’s a few names to bring you back: Bailey School Kids, The Magic Treehouse, Babysitter’s Club, Junie B. Jones, Encyclopedia Brown, Cam Jansen, Horrible Harry, Secrets of Droon, The Magic Attic Club, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Bunnicula, The Boxcar Children, The American Girls, Amelia’s Notebook, Dear America, Wayside School, Choose Your Own Adventure…we could keep going for days. All of those series have two things in common: one, they were either published between 1985 and 2005 and/or experienced a huge resurgence in the 90s, and two, they’re all middle grade novels. Some are aimed at younger children, like Junie B. Jones and The Magic Treehouse, and some are aimed at older children, like the Dear America series and A Series of Unfortunate Events.
The point is, Animorphs is so clearly a product of its time (and not just because of the Hansen Brothers references,) it slots perfectly into the trend of series fiction for children. If you want to claim Animorphs is YA, you also need to claim all of the series I just listed above.
Now, let’s talk about the main argument I see in favor Animorphs being YA: the dark content.
This is my personal wheelhouse. I’m planning on someday doing my PhD dissertation on trauma, violence, war, and trauma recovery in Middle Grade—not YA—fiction. I always find it funny when people use descriptors like cute, sweet, innocent, silly, light, and simple to describe children’s books. While there are certainly plenty of children’s books that are one or more of those things, there are also dozens that are the polar opposite—dark, complex, serious, violent, and deep. I once read a review of The Golden Compass which said “it’s not like other children’s books with a clear cut good guy and bad guy and a simple message.” I don’t know how many children’s books the author of the article had read, but I’m guessing not a lot. Let’s just do a blunt reality check with a few of my favorites—including some picture books which are typically for an even younger audience than Middle Grade. Spoilers for all of the books I’m about to mention.
Baseball Saved Us by Ken Mochizuki This book follows a little boy who is sent to a Japanese interment camp during WWII. He and his family deal with abuse, starvation, and sickness. Suggested reading age*? Kindergarten and up.
*(For this and all subsequent books I used reviews from Kirkus, the Horn Book, and School Library Journal to determine suggested reading age.)
Tumblr media
Check out this picture of Shorty playing baseball while an armed soldier watches him from a guard tower. Isn’t it cute, sweet, and innocent?
Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco Pink and Say are 15-year-old boys serving as Union Soldiers during the Civil War. Confederate Soldiers kill Pink’s mother, Pink and Say become POWs, and Pink is hanged because he is African American. Suggested reading age? First grade and up.
Fox by Margaret Wild This book starts grim and just gets grimmer. Dog and Magpie have been burned in a wildfire. Dog loses an eye, Magpie a wing. Magpie rides on Dog’s head—she is his eyes, he is her wings. Fox comes and convinces Magpie to leave Dog and come with him. There are definite sexual undertones. The book ends with the possibility that Dog and Magpie will be reunited, but no certainty. Suggested reading age? Six and up.
Tumblr media
[The text says “He stops, scarcely panting./ There is silence between them/ Neither moves, neither speaks./ Then Fox shakes Magpie off his back/ as he would a flea,/ and pads away./ He turns and looks at Magpie, and he says,/ ‘Now you and Dog will know what it is like/ to be truly alone.’/ Then he is gone./ In the stillness, Magpie hears a faraway scream./ She cannot tell if it is a scream of triumph/ or despair.”]
Tell me this isn’t a total punch in the gut.
The Rabbits by Shaun Tan The introduction of rabbits to Australia is used as an allegory for European colonization and the casual destruction of the Aboriginals’ lives and cultures. Suggested reading age? Six and up.
The Scarlet Stockings Spy by Trinka Hakes Noble A girl spies on the British during the Revolutionary War while her brother fights. He’s killed and there’s actually a description of her finding the “bloodstained hole” in his coat where the bullet struck him. How cute and silly! Suggested reading age? Second grade and up.
Meet Addy: An American Girl by Connie Rose Porter I think this works as a nice comparison to Animorphs because it’s another long-running, popular series aimed at kids just starting to read chapter books. Among other incidents, there’s a graphic description of Addy watching her brother get whipped by an overseer and a passage where another overseer forces Addy to eat worms. I actually give American Girls a lot of points for not shying away from the uglier parts of history. They don’t always get it right (*cough* Kaya *cough*) but those books are more complex than I think most people realize. Suggested reading age? Second grade and up.
My Teacher Flunked the Planet by Bruce Coville From the sight of a child starving to death to homeless children freezing in the streets, Coville certainly doesn’t avoid the darker side of human nature. Pretty sure most adults only noticed the funny green alien on the cover. Suggested reading age? Fourth grade and up.
“That was the day we crept, invisible, into a prison where men and women were being tortured for disagreeing with their government. What had already been done to those people was so ugly I cannot bring myself to describe it, even though the memory of it remains like a scar burned into my brain with a hot iron.
“Even worse was the moment when it was about to start again. When I saw what the uniformed man was going to do to the woman strapped to the table, I pressed myself against the wall and closed my eyes. But even with my hands clamped over my ears I couldn’t shut out her scream.”
Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai The Vietnam War, migrants drowning in the ocean, refugee camps, racism…this book is a bit like Animorphs in that it’s got a surprisingly dry sense of humor even as awful events take place. Suggested reading age? Fourth grade and up.
The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Patterson A pretty harsh look at the realities of America’s foster care system as told by a girl who could give Rachel Berenson a run for her money. It’s not afraid to show that parents aren’t automatically good people. Suggested reading age? Third grade and up.
Stepping on the Cracks and Wait Til Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn If WWII, bullying, dead siblings, draft dodging, and parental abuse are too light and fluffy for you, you can always read about a child consumed with survivor’s guilt because she started the fire that killed her mother. Suggested reading age? Fifth grade and up.
“‘How do you think Jimmy would feel if he knew his own sister was helping a deserter while he lay dying in Belgium?’
‘It wasn’t like that!’ I said, stung by the unfairness of her question. ‘Stuart was sick, he needed me! I wish Jimmy had been down there in the woods, too! Then he’d be alive, not dead!’
Mother slapped me then, hard as she could, right in the face. ‘Never say anything like that again!’ she cried. ‘Never!’”
I could go on (and on and on and on) about trauma narratives for children, but suffice to say while I think Animorphs is probably the most brilliant one I’ve ever read, it’s far from the only one. Kids’ books can be dark, which is good, because if we only tell stories about white, able-bodied children living in big houses with two loving parents then we’re excluding the majority of real children’s lived experiences from our narratives.
There’s one more point I’d like to address: without sounding overly accusatory, I think a lot of the compulsion to consider Animorphs YA instead of children’s fiction is born of the adult bias against children. I’ve mentioned this before on the podcast, but Children’s Literature scholar Maria Nikolajeva created the term aetonormativity to describe society’s tendency to value the adult over the child. Like I discussed above, we have this idea that children’s books are somehow sweet and innocent, while YA fiction is darker and grittier because it addresses so-called ‘adult’ topics like sex, drugs, suicide, violence, and death.
As I hope I’ve established above, just because a book addresses these topics that doesn’t automatically mean it’s for teens. Books about heavy subjects can, are, and should be written for children. I think most of us are fans of Animorphs because it’s a series that sticks with us long after we close the neon-cloud covers. It’s a series that strongly disputes the notion of a clear right and wrong, and doesn’t shy away from the atrocities of war. And it was written for children. It was sold to children. It was read by children.
Some of us adults are just cool enough to read children’s books that treat child readers with the respect they deserve.

I’m With You (5/?)
Summary:
Having a crush was nothing to be ashamed of...lying to the family and friends of said crush about being the guy’s boyfriend, that was a whole other problem. When Buck saves the life of Andrew Diaz and accidentally makes a nurse think that he’s Andrew’s boyfriend, Buck soon finds himself lying to Andrew’s firefighter friends/coworkers as well as Andrew’s family including Andrew’s very suspicious and attractive brother, Eddie.
Based on the 1995 movie While You Were Sleeping.

When he arrived at the hospital with Christopher, Eddie found Buck getting ready to leave. Christopher stopped just in front of Buck, looking up at him.
“Hi, Buck,” he’d said.
“Oh, hey, kiddo,” Buck said with a grin and then looked away from Christopher and met Eddie’s eyes. “Hey, man.”
Christopher looked towards the bed, then, and froze and looked back at Eddie with a question in his eyes. Christopher knew that his uncle was in a coma, but it was hard to get a kid to understand exactly what was going on even one as smart as Christopher.
“Daddy,” he said.
“Remember we talked about this, Chris,” Eddie said gently. “Your uncle got hurt and now he’s going to be sleeping for a little while.”
“It’s so he can rest up and get better,” Buck added in. “His body is repairing itself and then when he wakes up, he’ll feel a lot better.”
“Oh,” Christopher said. “So, he can’t see my card?”
Buck chuckled. “Not right now but when he wakes up I’m sure he’ll be glad to see that you brought it over. We can put it right here on the table so it’s one of the first things he sees. How about that?”
Christopher nodded eagerly and Buck moved the chair and himself out of the way so that Christopher could prop up the card on the bedside table. Afterwards, his son turned to Andrew and lightly he touched Andrew’s hand before he drew back.
“Well, I was heading out,” Buck said. “I’m glad he won’t be alone.”
Eddie nodded.
Buck ruffled Christopher’s hair on his way out and then he was gone. Christopher got bored after a while and asked if he could color. Coloring was Christopher’s favorite pastime so it was easy to just set him up somewhere so he could color while Eddie sat with Andrew. People often said that it was good to talk to coma patients and with Christopher distracted, Eddie just started talking.
He told Andrew about what he’d missed at work on the day of the accident and then rambled on about how their parents were coming to LA the next day.
“It’s really annoying. And they’re insisting on staying with me even though your house is empty and they could have the run of the place. Mom says it would be weird because you’re not there. Not to mention they don’t know about Legolas. Or Buck. None of us knew about that.” Eddie paused there to look at his brother. “You know, I don’t get it.”
Andrew couldn’t answer no matter how much Eddie wanted him to so he could explain himself and explain Buck.
“I just don’t understand, Andrew. Have you been lying this entire time or did you not know how to tell us? Did you think we would judge? And the dog. You don’t like dogs. Growing up...it always felt like you got your way. You got everything you wanted and Buck is—” Eddie sighed and didn’t finish the thought because if he said it outloud it would be admitting it. It was better to say nothing at all.
Eddie pulled out his phone for a while, glancing at his texts and catching up with all the memes Chim had decided to send him for no apparent reason. He saw a text from Pepa about his parents and ignored it for later.
Eddie was looking forward to seeing his mom and dad. He didn’t see enough of them, it was just that things were always a little hard when they were around. Even though he had Andrew and Pepa and Abuela around, his parents always worried about how Eddie was doing as a single father. They wanted him back in Texas. He heard about it every time that they came to visit. Maybe this time they would be more preoccupied with Andrew to bother though. Or they would realize that Eddie was doing just fine with Christopher.
Christopher poked his arm after a while to show him what he’d been coloring. It was a picture of a blob that was supposed to be Andrew, on a bed.
“Looks good, kid,” Eddie said.
One of the nurses came in then. She smiled at him and Eddie.
“Hello,” she said, “just coming in to check on him.”
Eddie watched her. She didn’t do much but she wrote some things down on his chart and then with a smile and wave she was gone again.
Eddie pulled Christopher up on his lap after a while. Christopher leaned against him and Eddie just loved his kid so much. He was hit with that all the time, the encompassing love that he felt for his child. It was like nothing else that Eddie had ever felt. One time he’d tried to explain what that was like to Andrew who didn’t really get it or want to understand why Eddie felt the way he did especially with how Christopher had come to be. Eddie could hardly imagine what Andrew might have done in his place.
When Christopher started to squirm, Eddie let him down again. There was no point in sticking around. He knew Christopher would get bored soon and talking to Andrew was frustrating because ot was like talking to no one at all. Not to mention that he had to get his house clean and fix up the guest room for his parents because if it was one thing that his mom liked to do was criticize and he didn’t want to give her any reason to complain.
Eddie was going to be one picking them up right after dropping Christopher off at school and considering he had to go into work mid-day, Eddie knew he was looking forward to a long day.
—-
Buck went by Coffee Time after the hospital in part because he wanted coffee but also because he wanted to talk to someone and he had two options. Ali and Chimney. And since Chimney was mostly a stranger, Buck figured Ali was his best bet.
Ali was already getting ready to leave when he arrived, but she waited for him to order and get his coffee before she linked their arms together.
“So, you didn’t tell them,” she said and Buck just sighed.
“I couldn’t do it,” Buck admitted. “I’m just that much of a coward.”
Ali laughed and nudged him as they stepped outside. It was a nice day, not too hot but warm enough that it was nice to take a stroll out. Buck couldn’t help but remember earlier that morning when he’d been walking Legolas with Eddie.
“I wouldn’t say that,” Ali said. “So tell me how that dinner went?”
“It was nice. They’re loud and friendly and sometimes they bicker and yet they all care about each other,” Buck said. “And, Ali, he has a brother.”
Ali chuckled softly and under her breath. “And is the brother attractive?”
“The brother is very attractive. And he has a son who is just adorable. He’s — Eddie has been suspicious of me. He pretty much told me he didn’t expect his brother to be with someone like me which—”
“Which is rude,” Ali said, looking at Buck with her eyes wide.
Buck laughed and shook his head. “No. I mean, he’s right. Andrew is unfortunately very very straight and everyone knows it so the fact that they’re all willing to believe all of this is—” Buck trailed off and he felt Ali touch his arm. “They’re just so wonderful. And I’m lying to them and I don’t know when Andrew will wake up but he will and then I don’t know—”
They stopped when they came to a bench. They weren’t too far from where the incident had happened and Buck almost couldn’t believe that barely any time at all had passed since that day.
“Buck, I really don’t know how to help you here,” Ali said.
Buck laughed and it was maybe a cry for help too. “I don’t know what the hell I’m doing. This is a house of cards and it’s going to collapse and I’ll be the casualty.”
They were silent for a while and Buck sipped at his coffee. A nice wind hit them and Ali sighed. It was the same sigh that she’d given him back at Christmas when he’d dragged her into a Hallmark to pick up a card for Maddie. Buck had no idea if the address he had was even hers anymore, but he’d sent the card anyway even while Ali judged him for bothering. Buck just wanted to be sure that she knew he was still there for whenever she decided it was time to return his call or his Christmas card.
“So, about this hot brother,” Ali said eventually.
Buck turned to face her entirely. “Ali, he is gorgeous. The genes, Ali. His kid doesn’t look anything like him, though. And he told me today that the mom isn’t in the picture. Didn’t elaborate or anything but he’s probably straight too. Can’t win on all accounts.”
Ali burst into laughter then. “Buck, only you could end up in a problem such as this one.”
“I know.”
Buck went to the gym after he and Ali parted ways. He usually went straight to the gym after he got off work and then he skipped working out altogether on his days off but with everything that happened with Andrew, Buck hadn’t stepped foot inside his gym in a few days and he was aching for a workout.
It was easy to lose himself to lifting weights and to the routine of stretching his muscles and making use of them. By the time that he was done and covered in sweat, his mind felt a bit clearer. He still wasn’t any closer to solving his problems, but he wasn’t expecting to find an easy solution. He was also pretty sure that no matter what he did things wouldn’t end at all well.
On his way out to his car, he checked his phone. Pepa had texted checking in with him. There were also a few texts from Chimney.
Hey, liar.
Just wanted to let you know I won’t out you to them.
And Eddie doesn’t seem all that suspicious anymore.
So that’s good.
What did you tell him?
Good luck, liar.
Buck couldn’t help but smile at the texts. He just hoped that after it was all over he might get to keep Chimney as a friend.
Thanks. I appreciate it.
I really...I couldn’t tell them.
It was too hard.
I think finding me in Andrew’s house with his dog helped me out in respect to Eddie.
Instead of going straight to his apartment, Buck made the trip over to Andrew’s instead. He figured that even if Legolas could get himself out onto the yard, that it wasn’t fair to leave the dog with no food until he got out of work the next day and stopped by. Buck couldn’t be sure when Eddie was planning on bringing Christopher to meet Legolas, so the least that Buck could do was leave the dog some food out and take him on another walk.
Legolas actually appeared at the door when he opened it this time and Buck bent down to pet him, leaving the door ajar. Buck hadn’t been petting him long when he heard a knock on the door and looked up.
It was a guy that looked sort of familiar to Buck but he couldn’t place where he could have met or seen him before.
“Hello,” Buck said.
“Hi,” the guy said, frowning at him. “Uh, who are you?”
“I’m — I’m Buck,” Buck said. “Andrew’s boyfriend.”
The guy stared at him for a long time. “Andrew’s boyfriend,” he repeated and then laughed. “What? No, that’s not possible.” He was still laughing.
“Who are you?” Buck asked.
“I’m Andrew’s best friend,” the guy said. “Josh. So I would have heard about this little development. Although, you are in his house. Where is Andrew anyway?”
Buck ran a hand down Legolas’ back. Josh was looking at Legolas with some confusion and then back at Buck.
“He’s in the hospital,” Buck said at last. “It’s why I’m here looking after his dog.”
Josh gasped and covered his mouth with his hand but in the next moment he was looking at Legolas again.
“Andrew doesn’t have a dog,” Josh said, then.
“Look, dude, I don’t know what to tell you but he does have a dog. His name is Legolas and I’m taking him on a walk. Andrew’s in a coma and they said he’ll be fine and wake up soon but that’s the state of things. So not entirely good.”
“And you’re his boyfriend,” Josh said and he whistled. “Well if he’s going for men now, at least he’s got good taste.” He looked Buck up and down twice.
“Yes, I’m his boyfriend,” Buck said and he tried not to be flattered by the way that Josh was so obviously checking him out. “And...I should go feed and take Legolas out.”
Instead of leaving, Josh stepped inside and closed the door behind him and Buck really had no idea what to do with this guy so he ignored him and walked to the kitchen and he heard Josh follow. Somehow, this felt worse than the whole thing with Eddie earlier.
Buck busied himself pouring out dog food into Legolas’ plate and Legolas waited until Buck was done to start eating. When Buck was done, he finally looked at Josh who had made himself comfortable by jumping up on the counter.
“Okay, so…” Buck said.
Josh regarded him for a moment. “I just...I want to get this all straight,” he said and then laughed. “No, sorry. I guess it’s not straight, is it?” He laughed again but sobered up quickly enough.
“Andrew was in an accident. He hit his head and he’s in the hospital. Has been for a few days now,” Buck said.
Josh nodded thoughtfully. “Okay...so, I get that. I’m just not understanding where you come in. Or, well, that dog.”
Explanations — lies, really, popped into his head. He could keep it all going and tell him what he’d told everyone else except that it was exhausting. Lying was the most exhausting thing in the world and Josh was already seeing through the whole thing. It didn’t seem worth it to lie to Josh, so instead of telling him once more that he was Andrew’s boyfriend he let out a sigh and he braced himself. This was the first step. If he could tell Josh then maybe he would figure out how to tell everyone else.
“Fine, so I’m not his boyfriend.”
“Aha!” Josh cried and he jumped off the counter. “I knew it. I have excellent gaydar and Andrew, I am sorry to say, is at most a one on the kinsey scale. And he doesn’t like dogs, so where did he come from?” Josh’s eyes were widened for effect and he glanced at Legolas and then back at Buck and raised an eyebrow.
“I have no idea where the dog came from,” Buck admitted and it felt good to say it to someone. “I just know that he had a dog collar on him when he hit his head and that the hospital gave me all his stuff. So I came here because I figured there was a dog and there was. His brother was surprised about Legolas too.”
Josh burst out into laughter that didn’t stop for a long moment. Buck was almost regretting telling him.
“So you got yourself into quite the pickle, then,” Josh said at last. “What are you going to do?”
“Let it blow up in my face,” Buck said and groaned. “He’ll wake up any day now and I’m going to be this giant joke to them that they laugh about. Pathetic Buck who lied about having a boyfriend and then kept the lie going while their family member was in a freaking coma.”
Josh reached over to pat Buck’s arm. “Listen, this is not as bad as it seems. The single life...it’s a struggle. Andrew isn’t a bad guy.”
“I’ve been lying about being his boyfriend,” Buck said. “Even the nicest most understanding person would be upset about that.”
He and Josh hung out for a while longer. Josh had even gone into Andrew’s fridge and brought out a couple of beers and they went outside because it was a nice night out and because Legolas wanted to go outside.
“So, what made you do it exactly?” Josh asked eventually.
“His grandmother,” Buck said. “I was talking out loud like an idiot and this nurse just assumed I was his boyfriend. And I wanted to check on him because the whole thing happened really fast and I sorta knew him and I was—”
“You were worried,” Josh said with a shoulder shrug.
Despite how weird things were that night, Josh was turning out to be a pretty cool and nice guy and Buck liked him. It was strange how he was suddenly finding people to talk to and that Josh had stuck around even after hearing about the mess that Buck had turned his life into.
“I was worried,” Buck admitted. “I, um, I pulled him out of the way of traffic and just all of it...I wanted to be sure he would be okay. And then Athena showed up and I thought she was there to question me.”
“Athena is—”
“Sergeant Grant,” Buck said.
Josh nodded and he took a sip of his beer, motioning for Buck to go on.
“Before I knew it his coworkers were there and then his aunt and his grandmother and I wanted to say something but his grandma didn’t look like she would be able to just handle it and she seemed so happy to hear I was Andrew’s boyfriend so it all just spiralled from there.”
Josh whistled. Legolas came running at them and Buck laughed when Josh was almost knocked on his back but then he grabbed Legolas by the collar and pulled him back.
“And here you are in your fake boyfriend’s house with his best friend,” Josh said.
Buck let go of Legolas and then turned to look at Josh directly. “Wait,” he said, “since you’re his best friend, tell me about him. Things I should know so I don’t—”
“Put your foot in it,” Josh finished for him.
“Sure,” Buck said.
Legolas brought him the leash so Buck stood up. “Come on, time to take this guy on a walk. Isn’t that right, Legolas?”
Legolas barked.
Josh followed him out of the yard and it was so reminiscent of his time with Eddie but it was different too. Josh talked about Andrew, mostly things that Buck had already observed about the guy and then when they paused so that Legolas could do this business Josh chuckled.
“Oh, and Andrew only has one ball sac,” Josh said.
Buck didn’t know what to say for a long while. “How — how do you know that?”
Josh just shrugged. “You really don’t want to know.”
Buck’s phone rang right at that moment saving Buck from asking how Josh had that information in the first place. It was an unknown number but he picked it up anyway.
“Hello?” Buck asked.
“Hey, Buck. It’s Hen. Just wanted to check up on you and see how you’re doing.”
Buck was a bit floored. “Uh, I’m good. How are you?”
Hen chuckled. “Chim gave me your number. I just — I figure you’re having a hard time right now with Andrew in the hospital and all and Eddie said earlier that you’re pretty on your own. So I wanted to be sure you’d be okay.”
Buck couldn’t remember the last time that someone had cared enough to check on him.
“I — I’m okay.”
“Good. Good,” Hen said. “Well, you have my number now so just call me if you need anything. Even if just to talk, alright?”
“I...yes, thank you,” Buck said and he was hit with the guilt again. They were just too good and too welcoming and he was a horrible person. “Andrew has really good friends.”
“We’re family,” Hen said. “That’s partly the job...but it’s been easy to care about these Diaz boys.”
Buck smiled to himself. Josh next to him raised his eyebrow.
“Yeah,” Buck said.
“Anyway, I’ll let you go, but I hope to see you soon, Buck.”
“You too,” Buck said.
And he wanted to scream. He wanted to let himself be upset by how stupid he’d been pushing into this family — these people that were just so nice and welcoming and that didn’t deserve what would happen when the lie came out. It was going to hurt them — genuinely nice people like they seemed to be, they would be hurt by it all. There was just no way around that.

Notes: So yes, Josh has made it onto the fic and he knows. I really wanted someone outside of the 118 to know and maybe even have a different perspective on Andrew.
Let me know what you all thought. :)

Missy Elliott
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Melissa Arnette (Missy) Elliott (born July 1, 1971), often known professionally as Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, is an American rapper, dancer, and record producer. Elliott embarked on her music career with all-female R&B group Sista in the early 1990s and later became a member of the Swing Mob collective along with childhood friend and longtime collaborator Timbaland, with whom she worked on projects for Aaliyah, 702, Total, and SWV. Following several collaborations and guest appearances, she launched her solo career in 1997 with her debut album Supa Dupa Fly, which spawned the hit singles "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" and "Sock It 2 Me". The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200, the highest-charting debut for a female rapper at the time.
Elliott's following album Da Real World (1999), produced the singles "She's a Bitch", "All n My Grill", and top five hit "Hot Boyz" The remix broke the record for most weeks at number-one on the US R&B chart on the issue dated January 15, 2000; as well as spending 18 weeks at number one on the Hot Rap Singles from December 4, 1999 to March 25, 2000, which is still the longest reign at number one to date on that chart. With the release of Miss E... So Addictive (2001), Under Construction (2002), and This Is Not a Test! (2003) Elliott established an international career that yielded hits including "Get Ur Freak On", "One Minute Man", "4 My People", "Gossip Folks", and "Work It". The latter won her a Grammy Award for Best Female Rap Solo Performance; Elliott went on to win four Grammy Awards and sell over 30 million records in the United States. Elliott is not only a trailblazer, but a record-holder, reigning as the best-selling female rap album artist in Nielsen Music history
Early life
Melissa Arnette Elliott was born on July 1, 1971, in Portsmouth, Virginia. She is the only child of mother Patricia Elliott, a power-company dispatcher, and father Ronnie, a U.S. Marine no longer on active duty working as a Shipyard welder. Elliott grew up in an active church choir family, and singing was a normal part of her youth. At the age of four in 1975, she wanted to be a performer, and, as biographer Veronica A. Davis writes, she "would sing and perform for her family". In later years, she feared no one would take her seriously, because she was always the class clown. While her father was an active Marine, the family lived in Jacksonville, North Carolina, in a manufactured home community. Elliott blossomed during this part of her life. She enjoyed school for the friendships she formed though she had little interest in school work. She would later get well above average marks on intelligence tests, and she was advanced two years ahead of her former class. Her move in grades caused isolation, and she purposely failed, eventually returning to her previous class. When her father returned from the Marines, they moved back to Virginia, where they lived in extreme poverty.
Life in Virginia saw many hardships. Elliott tells of domestic abuse by her father. She refused to stay over at friends' homes out of fear that, on her return home, she would find her mother dead. When Elliott was eight, she was molested by a cousin. In one violent incident, Ronnie Elliott dislocated his wife's shoulders and, during another, Elliott herself was threatened with a gun. At fourteen, Elliott's mother decided to end the situation; she fled with her daughter under the guise of taking a joyride on a local bus. In reality, the pair had found refuge at a family member's home where their possessions were stored in a loaded U-Haul truck. Elliott tells that she feared her father would kill them both for leaving.
She later stated, "When we left, my mother realized how strong she was on her own, and it made me strong. It took her leaving to realize."
Elliott graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 1990.
Career
1989–95: Sista and career beginnings
In the early 1990s Elliott formed an all female R&B group, called Fayze (later renamed Sista), with friends La'Shawn Shellman, Chonita Coleman, and Radiah Scott. She recruited her neighborhood friend Timothy Mosley (Timbaland) as the group's producer and began making demo tracks, among them included the promo "First Move". In 1991, Fayze caught the attention of Jodeci member and producer DeVante Swing by performing Jodeci songs a cappella for him backstage after one of his group's concerts. In short order, Fayze moved to New York City and signed to Elektra Records through DeVante's Swing Mob imprint, also renaming the group Sista. Sista debut song was titled "Brand New" released in 1993 Elliott took Mosley—whom DeVante re-christened Timbaland—and their friend Melvin "Magoo" Barcliff along with her.
All 20-plus members of the Swing Mob—among them future stars such as Ginuwine, Playa, and Tweet—lived in a single two-story house in New York and were often at work on material both for Jodeci and their own projects. While Elliott wrote and rapped on Raven-Symoné's 1993 debut single, "That's What Little Girls Are Made Of", she also contributed, credited and uncredited, to the Jodeci albums Diary of a Mad Band (1993) and The Show, the After Party, the Hotel (1995). Timbaland and DeVante jointly produced a Sista album, entitled 4 All the Sistas Around da World (1994). Elliott met R&B artist Mary J. Blige while Blige was in sessions for her second album My Life. Though videos were released for the original and remix versions of the single "Brand New", the album was shelved and never released. One of the group's tracks, "It's Alright" featuring Craig Mack, did however make the cut on the soundtrack of the 1995 motion picture Dangerous Minds. But by the end of 1995, Swing Mob had folded and many of its members dispersed; Elliott, Timbaland, Magoo, Ginuwine, and Playa remained together and collaborated on each other's records for the rest of the decade as the musical collective The Superfriends.
1996–98: Supa Dupa Fly
After leaving Swing Mob, Elliott and Timbaland worked together as a songwriting/production team, crafting tracks for acts including SWV and 702, but the most notable of them was Aaliyah. The pair wrote and produced nine tracks for Aaliyah's second album, One in a Million (1996), among them the hit singles "If Your Girl Only Knew", "One in a Million", "Hot Like Fire", and "4 Page Letter". Elliott contributed background vocals and/or guest raps to nearly all of the tracks on which she and Timbaland worked. One in a Million went double platinum and made stars out of the production duo. Elliott and Timbaland continued to work together for other artists, later creating hits for artists such as Total ("What About Us?", 1997), Nicole Wray ("Make It Hot", 1998), and Destiny's Child ("Get on the Bus", 1998), as well as one final hit for Aaliyah, "I Care 4 U" before her death in 2001. Elliott began her career as a featured vocalist rapping on Sean "Puffy" Combs's Bad Boy remixes to Gina Thompson's "The Things That You Do", (which had a video featuring cameo appearances by Notorious B.I.G and Puff Daddy), MC Lyte's 1996 hit single "Cold Rock a Party" (backup vocals by Gina Thompson), and New Edition's 1996 single "You Don't Have to Worry". Combs had hoped to sign Elliott to his Bad Boy record label. In addition Elliott written the bulk of Total's second and final album Kima, Keisha, and Pam and Nicole Wray's debut Make It Hot (both released in 1998).
Also, that year Elliott appeared on the Men of Vizion's remix of "Do Thangz" which was produced by Rodney Jerkins (coincidentally the producer of the original version of "The Things That You Do"). She instead signed a deal with East West Records, a division of Elektra Entertainment Group at that time, in 1996 to create her own imprint, The Goldmind Inc., for which she would record as a solo artist. Timbaland was again recruited as her production partner, a role he would hold on most of Elliott's solo releases. Missy also appeared in LSG's song "All the Time" with Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill, Faith Evans, and Coko in 1997 on Levert Sweat Gill classic album. The same year, she rapped in "Keys To My House" with old friends group LeVert. In the center of a busy period making guest appearances and writing for other artists, Elliott's debut album, Supa Dupa Fly, was released in mid-1997; the success of its lead single "The Rain" led the album to be certified platinum.
The success was also a result of the music videos of her single releases which had been directed by Harold "Hype" Williams, who created many groundbreaking hip hop, or arguably more specifically Afrofuturistic, videos at the time. The album was also nominated for Best Rap Album at the 1998 Grammy Awards, but lost to Puff Daddy's No Way Out. The year also saw Elliott perform live at the MTV Video Music Awards show on a remix to Lil' Kim's "Ladies Night" with fellow rappers Da Brat, Angie Martinez and TLC-rapper Left Eye. In 1998, Elliott continued her successful career in the background as a producer and writer on Total's single "Trippin'", as well as working with several others in the hip-hop and R&B communities. Elliott co-wrote and co-produced two tracks on Whitney Houston's 1998 album My Love Is Your Love, providing vocal cameos for "In My Business" and "Oh Yes". The same year, Elliott also produced and made a guest appearance on Spice Girl Melanie Brown's debut solo single, "I Want You Back", which topped the UK Singles Chart.
1999–2001: Da Real World and Miss E… So Addictive
Although a much darker album than her debut, Elliott's second album was just as successful as the first, selling 1.5 million copies and 3 million copies worldwide. She remarked, "I can't even explain the pressure. The last album took me a week to record. This one took almost two months…I couldn't rush it the second time because people expect more." Da Real World (1999) included the singles "All n My Grill", a collaboration with Nicole Wray and Big Boi (from OutKast), a remix to "Hot Boyz" and "She's a Bitch". Also in 1999, Elliott was featured, alongside Da Brat, on the official remix to a Mariah Carey single "Heartbreaker".
Missy Elliott next released Miss E... So Addictive in 2001. The album spawned the massive pop and urban hits "One Minute Man", featuring Ludacris and Trina, and "Get Ur Freak On", as well as the international club hit "4 My People" and the less commercially successful single "Take Away". The double music video for "Take Away/4 My People" was released in the fall of 2001, shortly after the 9-11 terrorist attacks and the death of Elliott's friend Aaliyah in August. The "Take Away" video contained images of and words about Aaliyah, and the slow ballad acted as a tribute to her memory. The remainder of the video was the more upbeat "4 My People", contained scenes of people dancing happily in front of American flags and Elliott dressed in red, white and blue. Though "Take Away" was not a success on radio, "4 My People" went on to become an American and European club hit due to a popular remix by house music duo Basement Jaxx in 2002.
Tweet's appearance on Elliott's "Take Away" as well as her cameo at Elliott's house on MTV Cribs helped to create a buzz about the new R&B singer. Tweet's own debut single, "Oops (Oh My)", was co-written by Elliott and released through Goldmind in February 2002. The single was a top ten hit, thanks partially to Elliott's songwriting and guest rap, and to Timbaland's unusual production on the track. Elliott co-produced the Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mýa and Pink cover of "Lady Marmalade" for the album Moulin Rouge! Music from Baz Luhrmann's Film, which went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2001.
2002–04: Under Construction and This Is Not a Test!
For her next outing, Elliott and Timbaland focused on an old school sound, utilizing many old school rap and funk samples, such as Run–D.M.C.'s "Peter Piper" and Frankie Smith's "Double Dutch Bus." Elliott's fourth album, 2002's Under Construction (see 2002 in music) is known as the best selling female rap album with 2.1 million copies sold in the United States. In 2002, Elliott won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance for "Get Ur Freak On". In 2003, Under Construction received Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album and Album of the Year. The New York Times designated Under Construction "this year's best hip-hop album." Elliott released two singles off of Under Construction. The lead single, "Work It" reached #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and won the "Video of the Year" award at MTV's Video Music Awards. The second single, "Gossip Folks" featuring Ludacris, became a Top 10 hit on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, was one of the most-played music videos on MTV, MTV2, MTV Jams, and BET in 2003 and was embraced by the dance community, as well as the mainstream, due to a Fatboy Slim remix. A third single was never released, though a video was shot for "Back In The Day" featuring Jay-Z and Elliott was set to release the sexual-themed, "P***ycat", as the album's final single with a remixed version featuring Janet Jackson. Although not released as single and with no video, "Pussycat" peaked at number 77 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In between albums, Elliott produced the "American Dream Remix" (featuring Tweet's additional vocals) of Madonna's single "American Life," was featured rapper on Timbaland & Magoo's return single, "Cop That Shit", and produced "Fighting Temptation" (featuring herself, Beyoncé, Free and MC Lyte) for the soundtrack to the Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Beyoncé Knowles movie of the same name. The track reached #1 in Japan but failed to chart in the U.S. Hot 100. Elliott was also featured on Wyclef Jean's "Party to Damascus" and Ghostface Killah's "Tush" singles, the latter of which became a minor 2004 dance hit, and had a pivotal role in the film Honey. Gap approached Elliott later in the year to co-star in a commercial with Madonna, which received much media attention. Elliott furthered her relationship with Madonna by performing the controversial 2003 MTV Video Music Awards show opening alongside Madonna, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.
A year after Elliott's most successful album to date was released, Elliott felt pressured by her label to release another album, hoping to capitalize on her recent success. Elliott's singles, "Pass That Dutch" and "I'm Really Hot", from her fifth album, This Is Not a Test! (released November 2003), both rose the urban charts. However, both were not as successful at pop radio in comparison to many of her previous efforts. This Is Not A Test sold 690,000 copies in the United States and has been certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Elliott has since stated "This Is Not A Test! came out extremely too quickly for me. I didn't want it to come out when it did." In 2004, Elliott was featured on Ciara's hit single "1, 2 Step", with her verse interpolating Teena Marie's single, "Square Biz". Elliott premiered her own reality show on the UPN Network, The Road to Stardom with Missy Elliott in 2005, though it was not renewed for a second season.
2005–06: The Cookbook and Respect M.E.
Elliott wanted to "give people the unexpected" by utilizing producers other than Timbaland and a "more to the center" sound not as far left as her other music. Her sixth solo album, The Cookbook was released in July 2005, debuted at number two on the U.S. charts and was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), selling 645,000 copies in the United States. Elliott's work during The Cookbook era was heavily recognized. Elliott received 5 Grammy nominations in 2005, including one for Best Rap Album for The Cookbook. The album's first single, "Lose Control," won a Grammy for Best Short Form Video and was nominated for Best Rap Song. "Lose Control" also garnered Elliott six 2005 MTV VMA award nominations (winning Best Dance Video and Best Hip-Hop Video). Elliott won Best Female Hip Hop Artist at the 2005 American Music Awards, and was nominated for Best International Female Artist at the 2006 BRIT Awards.
"Lose Control" featuring Ciara and Fatman Scoop, became a Top 5 hit in the early summer (peaking at number three on the Billboard Hot 100). The second single, Teary Eyed, did not chart, although the video charted on MTV's TRL for a few weeks, and BET's 106 & Park for a few days. The third single, "We Run This", was released with heavy airplay on VH1, MTV, and BET. It served as the lead single for the soundtrack to the gymnastics-themed film Stick It. The song was also nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Rap Solo Performance category in 2006. Respect M.E., Elliott's first greatest hits album, was released outside the United States and Canada on September 4, 2006, only in South Africa, Australia, Europe, Japan, and Brazil. The collection became her second top ten album in the UK and her highest charting album to date, peaking at number seven there.
2007–14: Production work
Elliott was an honoree of the 2007 VH1 Hip Hop Honors. In honor of her career, many artists performed some of her biggest hits. Timbaland and Tweet performed "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", Eve and Keyshia Cole performed "Hot Boyz" and "Work It", Fatman Scoop and Ciara performed "Lose Control", and Nelly Furtado performed "Get Ur Freak On (The Remix)." Since 2007, Elliott's seventh studio album has had several different forms with extensive delays. In 2007, she worked with Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, Danja, T-Pain and DJ Toomp and planned to release an album at the beginning of 2008. In January 2008, "Ching-a-Ling" was released as the lead single for the Step Up 2: The Streets soundtrack, which also featured "Shake Your Pom Pom" produced by Timbaland. While Elliott did also release the song "Best, Best" in 2008, she renamed the album from FANomenal to its current tentative title to Block Party in 2008. She later decided against Block Party and four years later, in 2012, Elliott released two Timbaland-produced singles ("9th Inning" and "Triple Threat") exclusively to iTunes. Though the songs managed to chart on Billboard Hot Digital Songs, in an interview with Yahoo's The Yo Show, Missy talked about her hiatus from making records: "Your brain needs time to refresh! Things happen in your life where you can then write something else instead of the same three topics. Like, how many times we gonna talk about the club? I gotta feel like what I'm giving the fans is 100 percent and that it's game-changing. I don't just throw out microwave records."
In between the recording of her seventh album, Missy Elliott found success behind the scenes. Elliott's writing and production helped her reach #1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs with Keyshia Cole's "Let It Go" (2007), Jazmine Sullivan's "Need U Bad" (2008), and Monica's "Everything to Me" (2010). Since 2008, songs written and/or produced by Elliott for Fantasia ("Free Yourself"), Jennifer Hudson ("I'm His Only Woman"), Monica ("Everything to Me"), Keyshia Cole ("Let It Go"), and Jazmine Sullivan ("Need U Bad" and "Holding You Down (Goin' in Circles)") have all received Grammy nominations. Both Fantasia's "Free Yourself" (2005) and Sullivan's "Holding You Down (Goin' In Circles)" reached #3 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. In the summer of 2010, Elliott embarked on a two part tour with stops in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, while she also performed at VH1's "Hip Hop Honors: The Dirty South" in a tribute to Timbaland, performing "Get Ur Freak On" and "Work It". In 2008 she made an appearance in "Whatcha Think About That" by The Pussycat Dolls, and performed live in different places with them. In 2011 and 2012, Elliott made guest appearances on "All Night Long" by Demi Lovato, "Nobody's Perfect" by J. Cole, the remix of "Why Stop Now" by Busta Rhymes with Chris Brown and Lil Wayne, and a remix of Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" that helped catapult "T.G.I.F." to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. She also produced Monica's singles "Anything (To Find You)" and "Until It's Gone".
Throughout 2013, Missy Elliott was featured on Eve's album cut "Wanna Be," as well as international artists' singles, Little Mix's "How Ya Doin'?" and "NiLiria" with K-pop musician G-Dragon, which was named by Complex magazine as one of the "50 Best Songs of 2013". Elliott also contributed to her protégée Sharaya J's two releases, "Banji" and "Smash Up The Place/Snatch Yo Wigs". In December 2013, Elliott received a Grammy nomination with Fantasia and Kelly Rowland for their song "Without Me". As early as July 2013, Missy Elliott and Timbaland held recording sessions for Kat Dahlia's debut, My Garden (2015). In August 2013, R&B singer Faith Evans revealed that Missy Elliott would be featured on her sixth studio album, tentatively titled Incomparable. In March 2014, Evans revealed one of the tracks was named "I Deserve It", featuring Missy and her protégée Sharaya J, in which Evans cited it as a "banger" and "feel good" record. Evans also revealed that in total Elliott contributed three tracks to her album. On July 7, 2014, fellow R&B singer Monica confirmed that Elliott would be a feature on her upcoming eighth studio album. On July 29, 2014, a snippet of a Missy Elliott–produced song, nicknamed "I Love Him", premiered on Monica's official Instagram account.
2015–present: Upcoming seventh studio album
In 2015, Missy Elliott performed at the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show with Katy Perry. Elliott performed a medley of "Get Ur Freak On", "Work It", and "Lose Control". The performance was well-received, and boosted digital sales of Elliott's work that week, with a twenty-five-fold increase in album sales (to 2,000 units) and a ten-fold increase in sales of the three songs she performed (to 71,000 units) compared to the week before. It also became the most watched Super Bowl halftime show in NFL history, receiving 118.5 million viewers in the United States. On February 3, 2015, it was confirmed that Elliott would be a feature on the upcoming remix to Diplo and Skrillex's "Take Ü There". On February 11, Elliott stated that she was still in the process of recording her seventh studio album, Block Party, with Timbaland. On April 2, 2015, Pharrell Williams confirmed that he was working on Elliott's album during an episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. On November 12, 2015, "WTF (Where They From)" and its music video were simultaneously released to digital outlets. By November 19, the song and its video had been streamed 6.1 million times in the US alone, with an additional count of 16 million views per YouTube viewing.
On February 7, 2016, the day of the fiftieth Super Bowl, Missy Elliott released a promotional single, "Pep Rally". Later that month, Elliott reunited with former protégée Tweet and frequent collaborator Timbaland on the cut "Somebody Else Will" taken from the former's third studio album, Charlene. By March 15, 2016, First Lady Michelle Obama proclaimed that she had assembled a collaborative track featuring vocals from Missy Elliott, Kelly Clarkson, Janelle Monáe and Zendaya, alongside production credit from pop songwriter Diane Warren and Elliott, titled "This Is for My Girls". The iTunes-exclusive record will be used to both coincide with Ms. Obama's SXSW speech and to promote her third-world educational initiative "Let Girls Learn".
Following a surprise appearance with TLC on the 2016 televised special Taraji's White Hot Holidays, Elliott announced plans to release a documentary chronicling her impact on the production scene in both audio and video. The midnight of January 27, 2017, saw the full-length release to a new Elliott single titled "I'm Better", featuring production and vocal assistance from recurring sideman Lamb and shared directing credit by Elliott and longtime colleague Dave Meyers.
Personal life
Elliott has said that she wants to start a family, but she is afraid of giving birth. She stated, "I don't know if I can take that kind of pain [of labor]. Maybe in the year 2020 you could just pop a baby out and it'd be fine. But right now I'd rather just adopt." Elliott and her father occasionally talk, but the singer says she has not forgiven him.
In June 2011, Elliott told People magazine that her absence from the music industry was due to a hyperthyroidism disorder known as Graves' disease. She was diagnosed after she nearly crashed a car from having severe leg spasms. She experienced severe symptoms from the condition, and she could not even hold a pen up to write songs. After treatment, her symptoms stabilized, and she has announced that she would like to get back to her career.
Other ventures
Biographical film
In 2005, it was announced that there are plans to make a biographical film about the life story of Elliott and is to be shown in theaters. Producers include Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, and the film is being written and directed by Diane Houston. In mid-June 2007, Elliott said she was still working on the script with Diane Houston in order "to come up with the right stuff 'cause I don't want it to be watered down. I want it to be raw and uncut the way my life was" Initially, it seemed Timbaland wouldn't be a part of the movie. When Missy asked him, he refused, citing he felt it dramatized his character; "the movie is about her life, her story, that goes deeper than putting me into the movie". However, Timbaland has since stated that he would reconsider if she could get others, including Ginuwine and Magoo to sign on.
Philanthropy
In 2002, Elliott wrote a letter on behalf of PETA to the mayor of her hometown Portsmouth, Virginia, asking that all shelter animals be neutered/spayed before being adopted. For the reality TV show The Road to Stardom, there was a contest for viewers to create a public service ad for the Break the Cycle fund.
In 2004, she joined forces with MAC Cosmetics to promote their "Viva Glam" campaign. In addition to the ad campaign, Elliott promoted the MAC Viva Glam V lipstick from which 100% of the sale goes to the MAC AIDS Fund.
In 2007, Elliott appeared on an ABC's Extreme Makeover and awarded four scholarships for a weight loss program to four underprivileged teens.

We have a new citizen in Mount Phoenix:
Han Duri, who is known by no other name;                                     a 25 year old son of Hermes.                                                 He is a postman.
FC NAME/GROUP: Park Chanyeol / EXO CHARACTER NAME: Han Duri AGE/DATE OF BIRTH: 25, 01/03/1995 PLACE OF BIRTH: Gangneung, South Korea OCCUPATION: Postman HEIGHT: 6'2 WEIGHT: 154lbs DEFINING FEATURES: Angel wing tattoos on the outside of each ankle
PERSONALITY: Duri isn’t the greatest postman. He isn’t the greatest with directions, with checking every mailbox along the route, or even with remembering which letters are legal to mail or not. You might decide that his height and thin frame contribute to the airiness within his head. He’s often forgetful with dates and holidays because for him they don’t matter. Time moves too quickly and infinitely for him to stop and celebrate made up events. Duri is generally a silent individual and can be occasionally inclined to pretend that he didn’t hear you calling out to him to avoid a conversation. This can either help his route move more fluidly or incite an incident wherein someone will aggressively try to attain his attention. It depends on the person. However, Duri is not inclined to fight with anyone. He carries too much important weight on his shoulders to be carelessly slinging it at minor inconveniences. He’s often tired, often hungry, and often off in his own mind. All of this isn’t to say that he wouldn’t make for a wonderful friend or that he avoids making any kind of social connections. He just moves in his own timeframe and finds it hard to slow down enough for those who would seek to hold onto him.
HISTORY: Duri’s childhood was as forgettable to him as birthdays were. He was raised by what he’d assumed were his grandparents in Gangneung, South Korea. Even still, there was never any feeling of attachment between them or a familial bond which is created instantly upon birth. In place of being loved, he was made to be self-sufficient. As soon as Duri could feed himself, they set him a plate at the table and left the responsibility of filling it up to him. As soon as he could open the plastic casing on a bandage, he was to care for his own wounds. There wasn’t much conversation in their modest hovel, either. No hello’s or how-was-your-day’s. Duri was simply a guest and sometimes simply a ghost. He once asked about where his parents had gone, why they didn’t hold onto him, and was only told flatly that Gods like Hermes wanted little to do with offspring as airy as he was. Duri made a point never to ask again.
An education wasn’t expected of him. He would attend school out of curiosity rather than necessity and was often talked about in secret because of his awkwardness with other students and because of his handed-down clothing. His grandmother at least made the effort of tailoring down their old clothing to fit the quickly growing boy. So there stood young Duri, his grandpa’s sweater still loosely hanging off of him, jeans held in place by a rope belt, shoes left untied, and glasses constantly falling down. He couldn’t see clearly out of them, anyway. They’d been grandpa’s, too. He wasn’t very good at making friends, at answering quizzes, or at remembering to complete the assigned homework. Luckily for him, there had been a concerned secretary that began taking to his side at lunch and who had suggested Duri help her sort the office’s mail whenever he felt he needed an escape from life’s heavy burdens. (Probably of her own accord and not his fervent praying she’d believe he could help.) He wasn’t sure what a heavy burden was but if it kept him from communicating with other people, he thought he should take advantage of it. He sorted mail in that front office long after the secretary had departed, from first grade all the way until his graduation as a senior. He couldn’t do basic math but he could match the signature of every staff member in the school to sign off on incoming packages and that in itself was a good deal of power.
At some point during his senior year, his grandparents had stopped appearing to him. Probably to anyone, he imagined. There were no goodbyes or packing up of important items. He simply began coming home to an empty house and couldn’t recall if they’d mentioned their departure or not. It seemed fitting. He wouldn’t be hard pressed to locate them or to investigate what happened to them should it have been something awful. They were self-sufficient, too. (If they had been real people or spirits, he wouldn’t question.) Following his graduation, he was left standing still. His career aspects were bleak because he’d never been able to focus enough in his classes that he’d have skills to utilize. There wasn’t anyone to claim him, anymore. No one to pass by at home. He had the height for athletics but not the interest. He had the ingrained ability to burrow into the background unheard and unseen but no desire to use the skill for robbing others of their treasures. He disliked adapting and did not believe that one should have to sacrifice their natural beings in order to accept change. Duri never held it against his father for 'forgetting about’ him. He’d have forgotten an insignificant child, too, if they failed so plainly to live up to their parents hopes of greatness. Still, he was curious about the other side of existence. Maybe, if he could get across the fabled bridge, they’d need someone with his skills. He could succeed his father in his own way, through delivering the God’s letters. He could learn more powerful signatures, be responsible for more serious packages, and ghost his way under the radar deep into the innerworkings of the mythical postal service. If he wanted to, anyway. It might be fulfilling enough to simply be a messenger in such an important place. Why bother living up to an inheritance he was never encouraged to grow into? He would start small. If he got across the bridge, that is.
PANTHEON: Greek. CHILD OF: Hermes. POWERS: Ability to copy signatures and hand writing perfectly and to induce small beliefs in others. (ie. that they can’t see him, that they’re afraid of something, that they’re forgetting the kettle is on at home.) STRENGTHS: Blending in, organizational skills in the mailroom, and emotional unattachment to others. WEAKNESSES: Curiosity, forgetfulness, and emotional unattachment to others. (I wrote that one twice for effect!)

Mayawati expels 7 MLAs, vows to take revenge on Akhilesh
Tumblr media
Bahujan Samaj Party President Mayawati on Thursday expelled seven MLAs and blamed the Samajwadi Party (SP) for being anti-Dalit. She said withdrawing the case related to the state guest house incident of 1995 was a ‘mistake’ on her part.
In a press statement, Mayawati said she had entered into an alliance with the SP in 2019, setting aside the acrimony of the June 2, 1995 incident.
“Akhilesh kept telling Satish Chandra Mishra to withdraw the guest house case which I did. The BSP fully supported the SP candidates in the Lok Sabha elections, but we did not get their votes,” she said.
She further said that the seven legislators who had betrayed the party were being expelled from the party. The expelled legislators are Aslam Chaudhary, Aslam Raini, Muztaba Siddiqui, Hakam Lal Bind, Govind Jatav, Sushma Jatav and Vandana Singh.
She said that as soon as these MLAs violate the anti-defection laws, disqualification petitions would be moved against them.

25 Years Ago Thriller THE CRUSH Started a New Obsession
The teen stalker/obsession flick The Crush is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The Fatal Attraction-esque psychological thriller was originally released in theaters on April 2, 1993 and became a hit that undoubtedly influenced the future of a sub-genre. The film stars a pre-Clueless Alicia Silverstone in her feature film debut. Silverstone plays Adrian Forrester, a 14 year old girl who develops a dangerous and deadly crush on Nick Eliot, the man who is renting her parents’ guest house. After Nick refuses her advances, Adrian attempts to ruin his life.
The Crush was written and directed by Alan Shapiro for Morgan Creek and Warner Bros. The cast is chock full of recognizable faces from the horror genre. Most fans will recognize Amber Benson (Cheyenne) from her role of Tara on TV’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Jennifer Rubin (Amy Maddick) has starred in several horror flicks including A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987), Bad Dreams (1988), and Screamers (1995). Cary Elwes (Nick Eliot) is most notable to horror fans as Dr. Lawrence Gordon from the Saw franchise. Not long after The Crush, Alicia Silverstone (Adrian Forrester) went on to find super stardom with her breakout lead role as Cher in 1995’s Clueless, but she has also starred in plenty of genre-friendly fare over the years. For example, during the 1990s Silverstone starred in Hideaway (1995), True Crime (1995), The Babysitter (1995), and, more recently, Vamps (2012) and The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017).
Currently, The Crush has a 26% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but the low score from critics hasn’t deterred the film from gaining a strong following over the years. Produced on a budget of $6 million, The Crush more than doubled its budget dollars in earnings to the tune of over $13 million at the box office. Alan Shapiro, has said that his film is inspired by a real-life incident. In a bit of controversy surrounding the film, it is interesting to note that there was a lawsuit concerning the use of the name of Alicia Silverstone’s character, Darian Forrester.
Aside from jump-starting its primary star’s acting career, The Crush also influenced the future of teen cinema. Prior to the release of The Crush, the stalking and obsession sub-genre of thrillers was mostly contained to stories dealing with adult characters; Fatal Attraction, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,  Single White Female, etc. But Before you get all “Poison Ivy was released before The Crush,” just hear me out. The similarly themed Poison Ivy starring Drew Barrymore was dumped into a small number of theaters in 1992 and was a financial failure for New Line Cinema. After the seemingly ill fated release of Poison Ivy (whih did go on to become a hit via VHS and cable TV), it appeared that the general movie going public wasn’t quite ready for a new genre of teen thrillers. All of that changed after the wide release and ultimate box office success of The Crush.
The Crush has had a lasting impression these last 25 years, and it’s fingerprints can be seen in stalker/obsession movies, even now. Since it’s release in 1993 we have seen no shortage of teen thrillers including  Fear (1996),  Swimfan (2002) and The Boy Next Door. Are you a fan? What is your favorite teen stalker/obsession flick? The Ultimate Guide to Naju: 50 Places to Visit in Naju in South Jeolla
Tumblr media
Where's Naju?
Naju (나주시) is a small populated "city" in South Jeolla Province, South Korea. The capital of South Jeolla was located at Naju until it was moved to Gwangju in 1895. The name Jeolla (전라) actually originates from the first character of Jeonju (전주) and the first character of Naju (나주).
Despite being a relatively small, remote city, Naju offers quite a bit to the dedicated tourist or to the expat who happens to find Naju home.
Cool history: In 1986, the governmental name changed into modified from Geumseong to Naju. In 1995, Naju city became extended to include Naju county.
What's Naju famous for?
If you watch k-dramas or visit Seoul in South Korea, you may see "나주 곰탕" Naju gom-tang soup restaurants or hear about the delicious "나주 배" Naju pears.

Naju is a city with history and modern culture.
"Its beauty comes from the harmony of history and modern culture within. The spiritual healing offered by Naju comes from this harmony."
Naju has plenty of rice fields and pear farms on the outskirts of the new "Naju Innocity Bitgaram" which is located in the eastern section of the Naju province. As of 2018, there are 12 Korea public service companies and business workers in Bitgaram, the Naju Innocity.
Here are 50 activities, cultural museums, delicious restaurants, cool cafes, and other places you should visit in Naju, South Korea.

Naju Travel (나주 여행)
There are mostly four sections of Naju: north, south, east, west.
1 - Naju Innocity / Bitgaram (빛가람동)
Naju has a new inno-city called Bitgaram (빛가람동) which became an Innovative City and the outlet ceremony for metropolis construction started on November 8, 2007. Former President Roh participated within the beginning activities. As the town received the name of "Innovative City", several Korean public companies of work transferred from Seoul, to the Naju area. Naju's creation changed into 4th began after Jeju, Gimcheon, and Jinju. Upon entering Bitgaram city, you'll immediately see some tall buildings of the companies: KEPCO, Knowledge Information Service Center, Korea Information Security Agency, Radio Research Laboratory, Korea Radio Station Management Agency, Program Deliberation & Mediation Committee.
2 - Lake Park (빛가람 호수공원)
A quite large park with both bicycle and walk paths all around the Innocity lake. Water fountain and light show starts at 8 p.m. on weekdays. And live busking music performances are scheduled on Wednesday evenings. Sometimes you’ll find other planned events, sponsored by KEPCO, KDN, Korea Council of Arts, or other companies, for families or couples to enjoy in Lake Park.
Also a bridge connects for walkers to hike up to the Bitgaram landmark observatory, or have picnics under the trees.
Address:  Jeollanam-do, Naju-si, 호수 로 77
3 - Bitgaram Observatory
The Bitgaram Observatory looks like an alien ship! The facilities for the observatory include an exhibition hall, restaurant, Hole Cafe, gallery and parking lots. You can ride the Monorail for 1,000won to the top of the observatory for a view of the Bitgaram city.

4 - Business Hotels
Some of these business hotels have excellent gyms or delicious restaurants! Or behind them, is the main Bitgaram road with a Daiso, Burger King, Hyundai and Kia car dealership, Dunkin' Donuts, Paris Baguette, Tous Les Jours, Lotteria, Gongcha, Twosome Place, Tom n Toms, etc.
5 - Restaurants Street on Sangya 2-gil, Naju-si
This is a great area with a lot of restaurants.
6 - Starbucks or Drop Top cafes on Sangya 2-gil, Naju-si
7 - Go naked in jjimjilbang spa.
There’s a Eco Sejong for a family spa, across from the Starbucks, or a few jjimjibang spas for women-only or for business workers.
8 - VR Rooms
9 - Father's Bagel for a good New-York-style bagel
10 - Arcade/Singing Rooms
11 - PC Rooms
12 - KEPCO botanical garden and lotus flower reservoir pond
Go see the tallest building in Bitgaram and Naju. Even from the two bridges and rural parts of Naju, you can see the KEPCO building.
13 - CGV movie cinema building
There’s a CGV movie theater, arcade room, bows and arrows, lots of Vietnamese restaurants, a dog cafe, Pizza Etang, New York Bread, boutiques, and other places you should visit.

19 - Golf Course on Lake Park
20 - Library
21 - Innocity bus terminal
22 - Bowling Alley
23 - Cute coffee shops in Innocity:

Things to do in Naju, old Naju and history.
Metasequoia-Tree Road (나주 산림자원연구소)
Many visitors and Koreans know about the famous Nami Island Metasequoia Tree Lane; however, there’s actually a similar one here in Naju!! It’s a botanical garden and research institute, so you can see a wide variety of trees, flowers, and other plants. There’s also some benches and large grass area for picnics!

Naju Station
Naju Station on the Honam Line is a busy station, servicing 29 KTX and 18 SRT trains every day. The line between Naju and Mokpo Stations is also being expanded to include Muan International Airport from October 31. While the current Naju Station is quite nice, the old Naju Station is worth a visit due to its historical importance; the former station was the starting point for the Gwangju Student Independence Movement.

Learn the Significance of Old Naju Station - It’s now the Gwangju Student Movement Memorial Hall
At Old Naju Station, you can learn more about the Korean students of Gwangju and Jeonnam resisted the oppression of the Japanese imperialists. It sparked with the incident of the Korean girl being harassed at Naju Station on October 30, 1929 and an anti-Japanese protest was staged on November 3. However, this small movement spread into a nation-wide Anti-Japanese and is also significant to Gwangju’s history too.

Understand History of the Statue of Peace Woman Statue (평화의 소녀상)
The Statue of Peace, also often called Sonyeosang in Korean pronunciation, is a symbol of the victims of sexual slavery, known as comfort women, by the Korean military during Vietnam War and the Japanese imperial military during World War II.
Address: 20 Jukrim-gil, Geumnam-dong, Naju-si, Jeollanam-do
Visit Naju’s best palace site, Geumseonggwan Hall (금성관)
The top attractions of Naju are Geumseonggwan Hall, a guesthouse operated by the Naju Government Office for visiting officials during the Goryeo and Joseon periods, and Geumhakheon House, a reconstruction of the private residence of the Naju Moksa (highest government official in the region).
I recommend starting at Geumseonggwan Hall for a history tour and then enjoying the peaceful five-minute walk to Geumhakheon House. You’ll be able to find the residence when you spot a grand hackberry tree towering over all the other trees. There are also many cherry blossom trees in the area, making it a popular attraction in spring. Unlike Geumseonggwan Hall, guests can actually spend the night at Geumhakheon House. Book a night here to feel like a traveling dignitary from the Joseon dynasty!
Address: 109-5 Gwawon-dong, Naju-si, Jeollanam-do 전라남도 나주 금성관길 8 (우) 58257 Recommended food: Naju gomtang
Eat Gomtang Soup on Gomtang Street (near Geumseonggwan Hall)
Naju is also famous for gomtang (beef bone soup). What makes Naju’s version of gomtang so special is their use of plate and shank cuts of beef for the flavoring of the broth instead of the standard beef bones used in other regions. It has also remained true to its original recipe throughout the years, drawing people back again and again. The area around Geumseonggwan Hall and Geumhakheon House is filled with gomtang restaurants, making it an easy choice when visiting!
Address: Area of Geumgye-dong, Naju-si, Jeollanam-do (전라남도 나주시 금계동)
Then eat gomtang soup at the famous restaurants and/or visit this cafe.
Among them is the ginkgo tree grown on the grounds of the Naju hyanggyo, a Confucian academy. It’s said to have been planted by King Taejo himself.  나주 학생독립운동 기념관Address:  전라남도 나주 죽림길 26 (우) 58260 Yeongsan area: East of the city center is the Yeongsan River (영산강) which flows southward through the city, then west out towards Mokpo.
Ride a traditional Korean boat, a Dotpae (돛배), on the Yeongsan River.
To do this, you need to go out to the Yeongsan-Po District. The boat is located across the street from Skate Street. You get a ticket - free for Naju residents and maybe 3,000won for non-residents - and you get to go on a 10 minute boat ride a good ways up the Yeongsan River. The boat ride offers exceptional views of the Naju countryside, and occasionally, they have musicians on the boat who play traditional "river boat" music. It can be quite a nice time.
Also quickly visit the Yeongsangpo Museum for free admission.
Yeongsanpo Skate Festival (영산포 홍어축제)
Some history myths: The myth says that Arangsa and Abisa fell in love with each other in the vicinity of the Yeongsangang River during Korea’s Three Kingdoms Period (57 B.C.-A.D. 668). In jealousy, young villagers threw Abisa into the river, but she was brought to life in the form of a giant snake. Alas, then both of them fell into the river near the Angam Rock (pictured). This area is known for its rapid currents which have overturned numerous riverboats.

Naju Image Theme Park (영상테마파크)
This is one of Korea's most interesting and underrated tourist attractions. The name is horribly misleading as are many of Korea's "theme parks.”. This place is actually a movie/TV drama set built as an elaborate Joseon-era castle with rooms you can walk in, traditional clothes you can try on, musical instruments you can play, vendors with traditional cheledon pottery you can buy, etc. -- all of which culminates in a spectacular view of the Naju countryside from atop the castle walls. It's a good 20 minutes outside the city. Tickets cost 5,000w, and if you are a Naju resident, you can get a discount (this applies to foreigners, too, so long as your ARC lists Naju as your official address). Check out their official site for more information: http://english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/ATR/SI_EN_3_1_1_1.jsp?cid=495604
This is the Naju Image Theme Park, where the soap operas "Jumong" and "Kingdom of the Winds" were filmed. Located in the southwestern parts of the country, the city of Naju was occupied by the Baekje Kingdom during Korea's Three Kingdoms Period (57 B.C.-A.D. 668). First-time visitors to the theme park can reflect on the nation's history and may have questions about the Goguryeo-style architecture.
The Naju Image Theme Park is one of the most sought-after locations to film historic soap operas, especially those set in Goguryeo (37 B.C.-A.D. 668) and Baekje (18 B.C.-A.D. 660) times. The park is surrounded by some 95 buildings.

As such, Naju is home to the Natural Dyeing Culture Center. You can easily lose track of time exploring the exhibit hall, materials room, shop, and experience hall here. The experience hall in particular offers many opportunities to make your very own souvenir, ranging from naturally dyed scarves and items of clothing to coloring and woodcraft kits.

Abandoned Bowling Alley
Nearby Dongshin University, there is a large bowling alley which has been abandoned since the 1990s. Koreans don't seem to have the same fascination with abandoned buildings as Westerners do, so there aren't any drug addicts or vagrants hiding in the place. It's definitely worth a visit. If you feel so inclined, you can go bowling with ghosts and ghouls; there are plenty of bowling balls, pins, and even bowling shoes available. After you've finished your game, you can head downstairs and sing to your heart's desire at the abandoned norae-bang. If you don't believe in the netherworld, however, you can pilfer through boxes of unused shot glasses and mugs. To get there from Hoban Apartments: walk towards the university, turn right at the street that's in front of the university. Walk about 25 yards, then, you'll see paths that lead you towards the bowling alley on your right.
#1 of 5 Things To Do in Naju-si
Relax at Jungheung Gold Spa & Resort (중흥 골드스파 & 리조트)
A bit further out, there's Naju's water park. According to other websites, it costs about 37,000w to enter the park and additional money to ride the rides and eat. To learn more about this place, check out the following website: Band Adventures

Bike the Yeongsan River.
One of the best things about Naju and much of Korea is the access to the kilometers and kilometers of bike trails. Theoretically, you can bike all the way around the country from any one of the trails. In Naju, the trails are breathtaking in their beauty, personified by majestic farm lands, cattle yards, and truly sublime views of the River. Every 5 kilometers or so, there is a rest station; some offer maps. If you manage to bike through this area, it's recommended that you try to pass by Neureoji Observatory (느러지전망대), which is a lookout tower, where you can stare out across an oxbow in the River. You can read more about that here: Namu Wiki
Address:
Hike Geum-seong Mountain (금성산).
It's not a particularly tall mountain, but it does offer some stunning views and as with most mountains in Korea, quaint, enlightening Buddhist Temples nestled here and there. What makes this mountain interesting is its history: With its several jutting peaks, three in total, it has the look of a dragon's back, and so, dating back to Korea's shamanistic days, Geum-seong Mountain has been worshiped as a holy place. Also, during the Korean war, a group of North Korean soldiers got stranded up there after MacArthur's famous attack on Incheon; those soldiers set up landmines around the mountain and held out until the bitter end. There's a South Korean military base up there now, making the highest peak inaccessible. However, there is a water park located over the first ridge of the mountain; it's only open in the summer and may look out-of-business, because they drain the pools every day (strange), but it's definitely worth a visit.

Check out the Naju Culture Center
Located between the Daebang area and City Hall, the Culture Center offers several surprisingly good theater and dance performances, and it also serves as a movie theater on occasion while the new movie theater in Innovation City is being build. The 160 and 196 buses go by here. Check out there website here: http://najuart.naju.go.kr/

Gatbawi Rock and the coastal walkway to reach it are a must when visiting Mokpo. Gatbawi Rock, Natural Monument No. 500, is said to look like two men wearing gat (traditional Korean hat). In the past, people had to ride a boat if they wanted to see the rocks. However, with the installation of a coastal footpath, visitors can easily walk to the rocks over the sea, enjoying the breeze on their way.
