Recap Notes: MAGP 8 "Running on Empty"
Tumblr media
Spoiler Warning: this is a purely selfish exercise in remembering what the hell happened last season (from someone caught up thru MAGP31, 2/27/2025 & all of The Magnus Archives). No promises I'll keep up with it. Summary: [on first looking up Forton Service Station] Mother-effers that's the most panopticon-looking structure I've ever seen.
Casement: CAT2RC3338-03022016-12022024
So I've a hunch this ep's doing the heavy lifting in teasing the metaplot via metaphor. Either that or I need to take a step back and hydrate. Walk my plants. Water my dog, that sort of thing. But for now? Hold on, it's gonna be a bumpy one. I think the best way to approach this episode is to follow along with the case. I really do apologise for the clunkiness, but if you've read any of my other posts you know we're flying by the seat of our pants, and none of this should be taken too seriously. So! The visual similarities are undeniable. The tower at Lancaster (Forton) Services might not be circled by prison cells, but it is the spitting image of a panopticonic guard tower with its 360 degree views. Reminiscent, of course, of the tower. The Panopticon and the Institute merged. The place where the tether was cut. As stand-ins go, it's about as subtle as the school of architecture Forton station's an example of (i.e. not at all).
It also means it's not too far of a stretch to take this essay on liminal spaces and extrapolate to learn what happened after MAG 200's "Last Words" played out.
“Liminal’ spaces, derived from the Latin ‘limen,’ meaning ‘threshold,’ are transitional spaces normally inhabited for short periods. They have been shown to have marked effects upon the psychology of those exposed to them, and long-term exposure has been found to elicit anxiety responses (Augé, M. 1995), (Bachelard, G. 1994) and feelings of the uncanny (Trigg, D. 2012).” Now. Threshold's a fun word here, because it harkens back to MAG 146. One of those great, classic TMA titles with multiple meanings, but the one I want to focus on is 146's clear allusion to the scar in reality at Hill Top as a threshold by virtue of the post statement. With what went down at the dethroning of the Watcher's special little boy, I think we have every reason to believe the site of The Magnus Institute, London is now a similar scar bleeding into Sam and Alice's world. It'd go a ways towards explaining Needles' cryptic "the land is definitely marked, now" along with Leonardo Kenning's recommendation that the building site of the Millennium Dome is unsuitable for The TMP Institute's purposes because of a "psychical poison" in the soil. JMart broke reality so good a new threshold was born. According to Joseph Peterson, the result of this type of brutal liminal space is an "architectural hunger" which I think tracks well onto the noticeably almost-manic underpinning of ravenousness the fears have this season. The way people falling from one world to the other are emaciated and starving. The land itself is hungering for something, because the wound isn't sealed. It's in transition, and resents it. At this point, you'd have every right to say: 'but hold on, that phenomenon is not exclusive to TMP's London" to which I'd say: Yes. [moving unto the Weird, capitalization intentional] The Restaurant. Either the restaurant at the top of Forton services (where Peterson finds himself after ascending an out-of-service elevator) is an isolated spook to enhance the flavour of the ep, or we're still in metaphor land. Considering the panoramic floor is chock full of diners with "oddly repeating elements to them" and this is the season of doppelgängers, I'd bet it's the latter. And while cannibalism's a nice jump scare for the end of a casement, what really made my blood run cold was the observation that outside the restaurant, past this space of brutal liminalism: "There was nothing. Nothing above, nothing below, nothing at all. Nothing, save the tower and the restaurant."
What if the tower is a guard tower? The restaurant, the feeding grounds for all that Jon and Martin sent through is Sam and Alice and Gwen and Colin and Lena's world (concentrated, around the epicentre, but not exclusive to it). An unstable prison made in a last, desperate attempt to keep the fears it was pulling from one world contained. There's nothing but the tower (TMA verse) the restaurant (TMP verse) and the void. Would leave us a cheery prediction for the end of the show:
“And so when faced with the prospect of being eaten alive, or leaping out one of those windows into pure oblivion… it was no choice at all." "I jumped.” But it's just a thought.
... ... GERRY! Fork, in all that, I nearly forget this is the episode we get Gerry. Don't care a lick for anyone who says it was fan service, it's worth it to see him "SO DEEPLY, PLAINLY HAPPY". Thank you, transcripts for that gem. I will cherish it. Nothing much else to say about the post casement. I would love Camden Epiphany to come back and be relevant, but I also held out hope "Grant us the sight that we may not know, grant us the scent that we may not catch, grant us the sound that we may not call" would lead to some great pay off down the line. Crafted an entire 'this is how we combat the Dread Powers' theory around it that (predictably) turned out to be wrong, so keep that in mind with everything above. I like throwing angst-filled mud at the wall to see what sticks.

How to Write a Supp Essay for Harvard
According to Harvard admissions (via the website)
Harvard looks for students who embrace growth, have potential and impeccable character. Are you willing to stretch academic and personal potential? Are you innovative (self-starter) and willing to explore many things?  What do you care deeply about? Can you show that you have learned something from your pursuit and that you have taken full advantage of opportunities for involvement and  leadership? Are you open to new ideas and people? How can you show your maturity, sense of humor, energy, concern for others, grace under pressure? Can you handle academic rigors and freedom of college life?
The types of students admitted consisted of: people who write with engaging language, effective flow, and a well-rounded personal story.  They SHOW, instead of TELL to create visualization. They utilize clear transitions to create a clear timeline of events. The stories are well-developed, and they come full circle. The stories include  a forceful and compelling message; all ideas connect to reflective learning. But emphasize positivity of character. Often, the personal qualities of the candidate are not directly stated, but are revealed through the story. They showed a strong dedication to amplifying diverse voices and stories.
Supplemental Essay Example:
Prompt: Harvard has long recognized the importance of enrolling a diverse student body. How will the life experiences that shape who you are today enable you to contribute to Harvard? (200)
Every Tuesday, I sit around a Harkness table with the section editors and pose the same question: “How can we write about Hotchkiss from a unique angle?”
Serving as editor-in-chief of my school’s newspaper has given me the invaluable trait of being attentive to often overlooked details in the world around me. After reporting on the exemplary response of our golf team’s coach when we got into a car accident and interacting with the dining hall staff for a photojournalism project, I understand the true value of my position: to recognize and highlight the often silent contributions of the other souls in my community. Since then, I’ve established a permanent column, “Staff of the Issue,” to celebrate the behind-the-scenes work of non-student-facing faculty. The magical feeling I get upon seeing words of gratitude printed on 600 newspaper copies distributed across campus has become a defining feature of my high school experience.

How to write an essay (especially when you struggle with writing essays)
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A graphic titled “BASIC ESSAY STRUCTURE”. There are 3 sections. The first section is regarding the introduction, labelled “Agonize for an hour”. The second section is regarding the body, labelled “oh hell yes i can do this no problem i got stuff to say i’m on a roll”. The third section is regarding the conclusion, labelled “I am going to walk into the sea”. /End Image Description]
I saw this post about essay writing with this as the structure and I just. Screamed a bit. The outline above (imo) makes a very boring essay that is UNNECESSARILY DIFFICULT to write. I was gonna just add onto the post, but I thought I’d make my own because I have a LOT to say.
So, to start off, I have spent far too long making this handy-dandy graphic with an essay structure that I find to be a lot more helpful.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: A graphic titled “ESSAY OUTLINE”. There are 7 sections. They include the outline for the Introduction, Body, and Conclusion, along with tips for all three, and then a section for General Tips. /End Image Description]
There’s some pretty lengthy explanations under the cut, and I spent way too long on this. However, I’m passionate about writing and hate seeing how much people struggle to write simply because they haven’t been given the right tools.
Without further ado, here we go!
Introduction (1 paragraph)
Opening Statement: This is your intro/hook. With an effective opening sentence, you want to introduce the main topic of the paper, and make it interesting for the reader to draw them in. The introductory sentence should be somewhat objective; your thesis will be your arguing point, but we need to know the general topic without the bias. As for the hook part—your prof/TA/teacher/whoever is grading your paper has read the same paper 600 times. Your paper probably won’t be entirely unique, BUT you can still make it stand out. This is where the “hook” comes in. An easy way to do this is to simply start with a verb. Reading papers that all start with “the” or “a” can get really repetitive and boring, so an action word can be a good way to grab the reader’s attention. You don’t want your opening statement to be too long; a sentence or two should be your goal.
Allude to Thesis: Right after the opening statement, use a sentence to briefly allude to your thesis (the stance you’ll be taking on the topic). This way, you can state your argument points without having to worry about wording your thesis correctly right away, or risk your thesis getting lost within the introduction. This is kinda a segue to your points rather than its own official “section”, so keep it brief.
Outline Supporting Points: These are the points that help support your argument. Avoid using a list form for this by using things like semi-colons or commas; each supporting point should have its own sentence. Saying that, definitely use transition words to help the sentences flow together so it doesn’t just seem like a laundry list. Don’t limit yourself to three points unless that’s explicitly part of the assignment. At least two is good if you can expand on them enough to do the paper, but don’t be afraid to use four or five if you’re still able to stay within the limits and expand on them enough to be individual points. However, sometimes too many points can make it hard to expand, so see if you can group some together if you have too many.
Thesis: Your thesis should be a statement, subjective, demonstrable, and specific. It therefore should not be a question, objective, hypothetical, or vague. This is because your thesis is a definitive stance on a specific issue or topic that you can prove with evidence. As for placement, I always put my thesis at the very end of the introduction. I would say it’s up to personal preference whether to put it at the beginning or the end, but please never put it in the middle. When it’s in the middle, it’s very likely that it won’t stand out as a thesis, and then you’d have to come up with both an opening and closing statement, which is hard. I like putting it at the end because I find that if I do it at the beginning, it can be REALLY hard to balance having a clear thesis while also introducing your paper and making it interesting. Plus, if it’s at the end of your first paragraph, it still stands out, you don’t have to do a concluding statement, you don’t have to balance any other aspect of writing (like an intro or hook) with it, AND it creates the perfect transition to your supporting points. Limit your thesis statement to one or two sentences—you want it to stand out to the reader as the thesis, and you don’t want to muddle the message by being too detailed. You’ll have the rest of the paper to expand.
Body (2-10+ paragraphs)
Introduce Evidence: For each piece of supporting evidence (your main points), make sure you introduce them clearly before actually explaining everything about them. Don’t be afraid to word it in an interesting way (although remember, you still want your message to be clear!). I also want to give you an incredibly important tip: the amount of supporting points you have DOES NOT have to correspond with the amount of body paragraphs you have. They drill the five-paragraph essay outline into you for years, and it’s BORING—for you and whoever’s grading your paper. It’s also bad writing, because then you get unnaturally long paragraphs that take up a page and a half. So, unless your assignment rubric says otherwise, don’t be afraid to get creative with the paragraph amount. Always start a new paragraph when introducing a new main point, but definitely consider splitting the main point into two or three paragraphs if needed. Disclaimer: sometimes if you have to split a point into multiple paragraphs, that means you might want to consider splitting the main point into multiple main points. On the other hand, sometimes combining two main points into one can help make a paragraph more substantial.
Expand: For each point, expand. Explain any extra details. Relate the explanations back to your main point so you can stay on target and not go on tangents that take up half the page.
Connect to Thesis: After you expand each point, as a concluding statement, relate the main point back to the thesis (the whole point of the paper!). Anyone can list evidence—show that you understand why this evidence is connected and how it proves your stance. If you can’t connect the point to your thesis, it’s probably not relevant or you need to do more research. By making the connection between the evidence and your thesis, 1. This is how you get bonus marks, and 2. It makes for an excellent concluding statement/transition to the next main point.
Repeat: For each main point, follow the structure of introduce-expand-connect.
Conclusion (1 paragraph)
Restate Thesis/Main Points: Rather than coming up with another introductory statement, restate your thesis and the main points that helped to prove your thesis. Please try to reword it so it’s not repetitive, and it’s best to keep the restating brief. You’ve already established all of this in your paper, so you don’t need too much detail. A sentence or two is fine. Another tip is to avoid basic concluding words. Sometimes it’s unavoidable, but definitely avoid the ones that involve the word “conclude” or its derivatives (e.g. “in conclusion”; to conclude”, etc.). Keep this part to one or two sentences to avoid the dreaded repetition.
Explain Relevance/Make Connections: Here is something I NEVER see in the common essay templates, and honestly, I feel like it’s one of the most important things with essay writing. It’s the difference between just another essay in a pile of 200, and one that stands out as exemplary. SO. We know your thesis. We know your evidence. You’ve even briefly restated it in case we forgot. Now, WHY is your thesis (and by extension, the paper you just spent a few hours on) actually important? Why is it relevant? Who cares? You don’t want to give too much “new” information, but you really should be able to find some connection as to why your paper matters. Because if you don’t see the point in it, how are you gonna convince the reader that your paper is worth reading? Essays are about arguments, yes, and convincing people that You’re Correct and You Know Things, but you need to be able to connect with other things to see the true relevance. Make connections, folks!
Concluding Statement: Truly the bane of anyone’s existence. A good tip is to look at it as your Mic Drop moment—your time to wrap it up, drop the mic, and walk offstage. Tie your thesis, evidence, and connections together into a sentence or two with a little pizzazz and sense of finality, leaving no room to argue.
General Tips
Know your audience: This can sometimes help with finding the balance between over- and under-explaining things. With essays, the person grading (the audience) is probably a bit above your current level, unless it’s being marked by another student or something. So write at your level—or the average level of your class/group. For example, if you’re in a second-year university biology class, you probably don’t need to explain what photosynthesis means. But if your essay is on a little known technique to measure chlorophyll levels in plants, you might need to explain some things that you already know, but others might not. Remember, your goal is neither to dumb yourself down nor put yourself on an academic pedestal—your goal is to communicate a message in an effective way that can be understood by the appropriate audience.
Pick a relevant topic: Sometimes this doesn’t apply, as you have limited choices. But, whenever possible, choose a topic that you actually know something about and/or are willing to write about. Sometimes even asking your teacher/prof if you can choose your own topic is worth it. The main point: picking something you find interesting makes you more willing to put in the work to write a good essay. Pick you favourite topic out of the options (or, at a minimum, the one yo hate the least).
Experiment with the writing process: Some people swear it’s easier to write the conclusion first, while others absolutely have to write the essay in chronological order. Some people need to finish what they start, some people need to flit around and add things as they think of them. Ultimately, the order you write things is very much a personal preference, and something worth experimenting with if you’re struggling!
Cater to your writing needs: Writers will tell you that they need to set up a space to write. Some people like writing on their bed or in a cafe. Some people need absolute quiet while others can’t focus without background noise. Some people need frequent breaks for the best results, others need to sit through until they’re done. The time of day can affect your writing—writing in the morning might be really difficult if you’re most alert at midnight. Lastly, experiment with different media. Maybe writing on a laptop just doesn’t work for you, and pen and paper is the way to go. Typewriters are fun. Microsoft Word might work better for you than Google Docs. Find out what works for you and gets you into a writing headspace.
Repetition and word choice: To avoid sounding like a broken record, make sure you use a different first (and even last) word for each paragraph. I always notice when an essay writer only starts paragraphs with the word “the”. Another helpful way to vary your word choice at the beginning of paragraphs is to use different types of word, preferably words that aren’t articles (a, an, or the). Using a noun, verb, or transition word can keep things interesting and help your writing flow.
Write with an active voice: Writing with an active, positive, and resolute voice fortifies your writing. An active voice is when the subject is the focus rather than the object, whereas a passive voice is the opposite. Example: “Sally ate a grape” is active because Sally (subject) ate a grape (object). “A grape was eaten by Sally” is passive because the grape (object) was eaten by Sally (subject). Essentially, if the sentence includes (or could include) “by [Subject]”, it’s passive. Even if you wrote “A grape was eaten,” that’s still passive. An active voice includes the subject doing the action, whereas a passive voice includes the object having something done to it. It’s a wishy-washy way of writing, though it’s sometimes inevitable in formal writing because you can’t use subjective pronouns. As for a positive voice, it doesn’t mean your essay has to be happy or perky—it means your writing, when possible, should focus on the positive part (what did happen or was added) rather than the negative part (what didn’t happen or was taken away). Example: “Sally didn’t eat an apple” is negative, because it just says what Sally didn’t do. “Sally ate a grape” is positive because it said what she did do. Lastly, use a resolute voice. Be concise and to the point without muddling the message with unnecessary words. Example: “Sally just a grape” is tentative. “Sally ate a grape” is resolute. Word like “just”, “maybe”, “really”, “perhaps”, “necessarily” are not resolute and can weaken your argument. Definitely take this advice for your thesis.
Communicate clearly: Using long or complicated words can improve your writing—but if they’re overused or used unnecessarily, it can actually weaken your argument because no one understands what you’re trying to say under all that academic jargon. If you can’t explain your argument in an understandable way, you probably don’t have a good grasp of your argument. This isn’t to discredit people who have a hard time articulating while writing or people who need to use complicated words—but the whole point of a paper is to communicate a message in an effective way. If you’re too caught up in using big words, it’s very easy to lose the actual focus of the paper.
Fortify your opening/closing statements: If the person grading your paper has a lot of other papers to go through, they’re not gonna read every word you write. Focus on strengthening your first and last sentences of each paragraph to perhaps improve your mark with the graders who skim.
Proofread: PLEASE read through and edit your work. You don’t have to completely rewrite your paper (who has the time???), but definitely proofread it when you’re done. If possible (I know it isn’t always, but it really helps), give yourself as much time as possible, then do another read through. Even waiting an hour or two and then going through it again can help you catch some last-minute mistakes. When you’ve been staring at the same paper for three hours, you kinda just ignore the mistakes because they’re burned into your brain. Going back can help you catch them and fix them before handing it in. Double check the assignment requirements, including formatting, sources, grammar, etc.
Kudos to you if you made it to the end! This took me 4 hours? 5? I hope it helps some of you in school. Essays can be a really fun thing to write if you’re passionate about the topic, and they shouldn’t be nearly as hard as school makes them. Even if you didn’t read this whole thing, I hope my graphic can be helpful! The original essay structure from the other post made me mad because no wonder some of you guys struggle! When you don’t have the tools, it makes life difficult.
Here’s a pic of my cat and dog for making it this far!

Let’s have a glance at the Chevening Leadership and Influence Question. Leadership & Influence Question Chevening is looking for individuals that will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer. (Minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words) The first sentence states what kind of people Chevening is looking to sponsor, namely; Future Leaders/Influencers in their home countries. The second part asks the applicant to demonstrate that he (clearly) meets this requirement. Having selected your examples, kindly choose a maximum of 3 but 1 or 2 are just fine as long as you clearly bring out your vast array of leadership qualities, skills, and attributes. We will now look at answering the above question using the STAR approach. For purposes of the Chevening essay, I enjoin you to add L (Lessons Learnt) as well. Thus, for all your Leadership and Networking essays, we shall use the STARL approach. It saves time, words and helps you answer the question satisfactorily. A final reminder here that Chevening is looking for future potential leaders/influencer and this has nothing to do with your previous position. S- Situation. This is straightforward. The situation is an event, project, or challenged encountered. Use the who, what, where, when and how. Example: In 2015, I joined X Company as a Team Lead, Marketing. Although the company was making profits, these were marginal and there was a high staff attrition rate because the company could not remunerate its employees according to prevailing market rates. T-Task: Here, briefly highlight your responsibilities and assignments for the situation above. In other words, what did you do or what did you need/want to do to change the results for better? Be specific and concise. This is a good opportunity for you to highlight the challenges faced as well. Overcoming challenges is one of the greatest hallmarks of a leader. It is an area where you can ace your essay. Example:After a brief sales check, I quickly realised profits could be doubled. After sharing this information with the manager, I was assigned to draft a new marketing strategy to boost the company’s sales. However, some old staff were not welcoming of the idea and refused to cooperate in the drafting of the new roadmap. A-Action: These are steps or procedures that you undertook to remedy the problem or situation. Here, clearly describe what you did. How did you go about the task that needed to be accomplished? The focus is on what you did as an individual, not as a team or group. Highlight leadership qualities or traits that Chevening is looking for (initiative, teamwork, organisational skills, leadership, temerity etc). Describe how you overcame any challenges faced in your quest to win achieve your task. Example:To win them over,I organised small group meetings where I allowed everyone to express their fears or reservations about the intended changes. I then sold my vision to them, sharing my successful stints at my previous job. I also encouraged them to assign specific duties to each and every member and recognised the contribution of each one of them. They felt valued and before long, everyone embraced my idea. I then set about finding the prevailing consumer needs, aspirations and perceptions. I designed customer exit interviews and organised focused group discussions to determine their views about the products we were selling them. After compiling a list of customer needs, I persuaded the manager to let me conduct a promotion drive to boost our sales, which he willingly obliged. R-Result: Tell them the outcome of the situation and your specific contribution to the said outcome. What did you accomplish? Let your results be realistic, achievable, and believable. Let the reader not question your achievements. Example: Within 6 months, the company’s sales had more than tripled, way above our expectations. The profits improved by 300% in just over a year and this resulted in the company raising the salary of all employees by 15%. I won the “Employee of the Year” award in only my first year at the organisation. A few years later, I was promoted to the Regional Supervisor, overseeing over 100 employees. L-Lessons Learnt: This is an addendum to the Result part above. What did you glean from the above scenario? Can you use similar approaches in comparable future situations/problems/challenges/contexts?Example:This experience showed me that understanding the organisation’s internal and external customer needs can boost the sales of a company. In summary, one of your leadership essays could look like the one below. Disclaimer: This is just an example for learning purposes. It is my own imagination and I am not a sales person. In 2015, I joined X Company as a Team Lead, Marketing. Although the company was making profits, these were marginal and there was a high staff attrition rate because the company could not remunerate its employees according to prevailing market rates. After a brief sales check, I quickly realised profits could be doubled. After sharing this information with the manager, I was assigned to draft a new marketing strategy to boost the company’s sales. However, some old staff were not welcoming of the idea and refused to cooperate in the drafting of the new roadmap. To win them over, I organised small group meetings where I allowed everyone to express their fears or reservations about the intended changes. Within 6 months, the company’s sales had more than tripled, way above our expectations. The profits improved by 300% in just over a year and this resulted in the company raising the salary of all employees by 15%. I won the “Employee of the Year” award in only my first year at the organisation. A few years later, I was promoted to the Regional Supervisor, overseeing over 100 employees. This experience showed me that understanding the organisation’s internal and external customer needs can boost the sales of a company. In my opinion, using the SAR/CAR/PAR approach seems easier as the task is often embedded in the situation part of the technique and unless you are familiar with this technique, you can skip T. Also, this is not cast in stone that you have to follow the above format to the dot. For example, you can do away with large sections of the above imaginary example to beat the word count. They understand you can not write everything in just 500 words but there is the bare minimum they still expect of you. Tailor your essays to your needs. Try as much as possible to use statistics as well as leadership traits. A brief Introduction: We advise you to always start with an introduction to your leadership essay. You can use the following tips: Give an overview of what leadership means to you and provide a generic encounter or experience before going on to provide focused examples. E.g. I was born and raised in a typical rural African village. At age 6, I was crafted into tending to and fending for our animals. Therefore, I developed organisational, resilience and other leadership skills which have been honed over the years. Start with a personal definition (personalised definition of what leadership is) e.g. For me, leadership is about service – being able to, in one’s own small way, restore a smile where one is lost. All my life, I have lived by this intrinsic standard. I started volunteering while in secondary school, campaigning against teen pregnancies, child marriage, gender inequality and HIV/AIDS. An introduction that mirrors the question E.g. “I have been influential in my community and my leadership skills are evident in the following examples. Having worked as a….” Introducing yourself and roles g.”I am a Doctor of Medicine, with 5 years’ experience and one of the youngest leaders at district healthcare level in my country as District Medical Officer and Chair of the District Health Management Team. I supervise over 200 staff as well as one hospital and seventeen health centres covering a population of seventy-five thousand, in primary healthcare provision, promoting healthy rural households. Note that this is not an introduction per se and the writer can ably build on this role using the STAR/TRUE approach to write a compelling leadership example. In other words, intros aren’t a must, they are dispensable. They’re therefore at the discretion of the writer. A Concise Conclusion to your Essay: After you have written your essays, it is only fitting and proper that you conclude. Briefly show cause why you want to be a Chevening Scholar, highlight how the scholarship will help you realise your and the Scholarship’s vision of being a leader/influencer in your home country. Chevening has some leadership conferences and seminars that can fast track your goals of being a global leader. Mention these if you have space. E.g. The Chevening Scholarship will further enhance my leadership skills and prepare me for senior managerial positions upon returning home – fighting for quality sexual and reproductive services for women as I look forward to transitioning into a global leader. Reducing your Word Count As you should have noticed from the imaginary example above, I wrote just over 300 words. If you wrote that example as it is, you would probably use only one example in your essay. Writing one example is not a problem in itself if you can bring out your plethora of qualities clearly and leave no stone unturned. During interviews, I was asked only one example for each of the leadership and networking essays. Chevening is about quality not quantity. However, quality without significant quantity is no quality. Just imagine someone gives you yummy morsel of bread to stimulate your taste buds and says that is all. It is why I encourage you to best use 2-3 examples. This shows the scholarship team that you are all-round person by diversifying your leadership examples. It is not always a must. After all, the instructions instruct you to use your own examples to convince them that you have leadership potential in you. Thus, the above example can be abridged by eliminating lots of unnecessary words and/or using synonyms. In fact, I would eliminate most words in that example till the word count is around or less than 200. This requires a special skill which you gain by repeated practice. I have put forth a few tips to help you scale down your words; Use active verbs. These save you words and at the same time convey the message distinctly. Avoid adverbs: these are generally unnecessary and take up a lot of your word count yet serve no purposes. In your scholarship essays, every word counts. They are not looking at your prolific writing skills. Have you answered the questions correctly? Words such as actually, really, basically etc at times dilute your essays. So instead of saying “I am actually very late”, use “I am late”. You don’t need to quantify how late you are. Also use superlatives in place of “very” in need be e.g. instead of “very good”, say :excellent” Use synonyms. This helps to avoid the monotonous and often boring use of the same word throughout the essay. Also, replace phrases with single words e.g. “At the same time” can be written as “Simultaneously”. Minimise use of articles (“a”, “the” and “an”): Where possible do way with these. Use grammatically correct compound words: These words may have a hyphen, often combining two nouns e.g.time-consuming is one word while consuming time is two words. However, avoid the trap of forcing nonexistent (instead of: it is not existent) words. They will unpack all your essays according to Standard English grammar and if you are above the set limit, your essays won’t be read and you will have no one to blame. Avoid redundancies/pleonasms: These are words that can be done away with e.g. “the added” advantage yet advantage would stand on its own. Other examples include end result, joined together. Proofread and proofread your essays: You will be surprised to see that many words are unnecessary. After the first draft, take a few days off to engage yourself in totally unrelated activities. Come back to the essay refreshed. Strike off all that is nonessential. Whilst you are grappling with reducing word count, please be advised to use formal English. Avoid contractions to beat the word count e.g. “I’m, I’d” etc. These will be unpacked to “I am I would /I had” etc and you will exceed the word count. In subsequent articles, more tips on minimising word count and the dos and don’ts of scholarship essays will be shared. *Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the authors and do not reflect those of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), its partner organisations or any scholarship awarding body. Refer to any other books, films, images, etc that influenced your writing process.
Discuss how film would be like?
Discuss animation style, aesthetics, material, color palette, lighting, soundtrack.
Think about intended audience for film.
The tone and style of the reflective essay should follow the appropriate academic tone with citations and bibliography. The reflective essay can also use first person as it is meant to be discussing and analysing our own experiences.
The Last Night - Strictures of Victorian Society
Utterson is annoyed at the servants who are “huddled together like a flock of sheep.”
Upkeep of the Victorian calm and self-contained attitude.
The housemaid breaks into “hysterical whimpering.” -> Mass Hysteria
“A rather wild tale.”
Utterson stands for the audience as he expresses the same doubt/questions the readers ask.
“This drug is wanted bitter bad, sir.”
Depiction of drug addictions.
Victorians can buy over-the-counter heroin; frequented to opium dens and even babies who were born drug-addicts.
Stevenson himself is also a drug addict who was reliant on hallucinogens.
Poole seeing the masked man who was much smaller than his ‘master.’
Referral as a symbol of something hidden/concealed (like door).
Description is evocative and deepens the mystery.
Upon breaking the door, there was no big reveal; no dramatic scene.
Instead, they found a mirror with their own reflection reflected instead, showing the “evil” duality of themselves.
The scene also utilises the uncanny -> we expect the extraordinary, but is actually overwhelmingly ordinary in the scene, even though things are not ‘quite right.’
There is a duality/juxtaposition in the description of the scene: The twitching corpse and a defaced book as opposed to the boiling kettle.
Prompts the idea of “To what extent did Utterson cause the death of Hyde/Jekyll.”
The final two chapters were written in first person narrative:
Dr Lanyon revealing the core of the mystery.
Jekyll telling the chronological story that happened over the course of the novella through his perspective.
First Letter (Lanyon):
Lanyon receives a strange message, begging to carry out a series of specific and peculiar requests.
Jekyll/Hyde begs Lanyon for help.
He goes to fetch a drawer containing powders and a test tube from his lab and goes to wait for the mystery man.
Hyde’s too desperate for the drugs, and gives him the option to leave to watch him ingest it.
Dr Lanyon is bound to secrecy - bound by the Hippocratic oath.
He is unable to reveal what he knows.
Even in a vulnerable state, Hyde presents himself as more superior  than Lanyon.
The format of an ‘objective’ third person narrative + ‘subjective’ first person accounts was a trope of Victorian fiction, but was also similar to the medical literature of that period. Anne Stiles (2006) observes that the book’s structure reflects the medical case studies of that period, but also subverts them. Jekyll’s character is both the physician and patient in the story.
Jekyll’s observation states that “man is not truly one, but truly two.” This reflects a Victorian theory that ‘each brain hemisphere might house a separate personality or a separate soul.’ It can be imagined that when a Victorian reads this, they may become afraid of their inner “Hyde” taking over.
An example of this could be the case study of an injured French soldier called Sergeant F which was discussed in the medical Cornhill magazine.  According to Stiles in her book Popular Fiction and Brain Science in the Late Nineteenth Century on page 43, Sergeant F developed “two distinct personalities upon a gunshot injury in the left brain hemisphere.” His first state is known as intelligent and kindly, while his second state displayed “animalistic and automatic qualities along with impaired sensory impressions.” He is also resilient to pain in this second state.
Even though Sergeant F was male and his condition was caused by an external factor (gunshot), the ‘multiplex personality’ was almost overwhelmingly a female condition. Felida X was an example of a female patient that was also discussed in the Cornhill magazine. Felida’s condition was natural occurring, exhibited hysteria and has another ‘peculiar secondary state of mind.’ She felt pain when transitioning between the two states. While she felt better in this second state, it had “unfortunate moral consequences,” such as when she got herself pregnant with a man whom she had no romantic interest in the first mind state. Her subconscious base instincts made her chase after the man and impregnated herself due to it.
Applying to Jekyll and Hyde, we can see that Hyde was wrestling against the approaches of hysteria. Hysteria is a centuries old illness that no one really understood at the time. It was usually diagnosed when no other cause could be found for its exaggerated symptoms. Examples include:
Salem Witch Trials
Occurred in 1692, over 200 people were accused of practicing witchcraft.
20 people were hung upon accusations from mass hysteria.
Neighbours and friends turn against one another.
Started because a group of girls exhibited convulsions and weird spastic behaviour -> epilepsy.
Most of them were girls and women.
Tumblr media
Anneliese Michel
A German woman who was supposedly ‘possessed’ by a demon after a complicated series of illnesses early in her life.
Suffered a seizure and diagnosed with psychosis of temporal lobe epilepsy.
Took a lot of medication, but her condition worsened (as well as her mental health.)
Began to hear voices and became intolerant to sacred Christian sacred places and objects.
Tumblr media
Stiles (2006) theorised that the small, puny, right-brained Hyde has something of the Victorian femininity about him; emotionally unstable, physically chaotic and somehow ‘lesser’ than his male counterparts. In the novella, Poole describes Hyde as “weeping like a woman.”
The nocturnal setting, theme of monstrosity and embedded narratives (i.e fragments, manuscripts and letters.
Key Features of the Gothic
Wild landscapes vs imprisonment
Hyde was constantly ‘imprisoned’ by the duality in Jekyll’s personality.
Other characters were also imprisoned by the Victorian society’s rules.
The re-emergence of the past within the present (often represented by ghosts - the thing you thought was dead.)
Exploring the limits of what it is to be human.
Internal desires or forces outside our control.
Perverse, weird and dangerous kinds of sexuality - incest, abduction, violence.
The vulnerable of women in 19th century - the ‘triumph’ of young women over seemingly impossible force.
The Uncanny
Figures that are not quite ‘human’ (dolls, was works, automata)
May feature ‘evil’ doubles.
“Somebody who seems unfamiliar and strange in fact has an identity you already know.”
No one in the novella could really describe what Hyde looked like; an uncanny physical description.
We can harness the power of the uncanny to enhance the story in our writing.
Less is More
Planting the seeds and letting the readers’ imagination flow.
Stay Close
Use all senses when writing, stay close to the protagonist and allow the audience to feel their fear.
Make it personal
Use your own fears/phobias to make the scene more realistic.
Give the reader time to feel the fear
Place hints that something disturbing is going to happen.
Create a mood of tension/horror before it actually happens.
Provide something uncanny that is both familiar and unfamiliar.
Allow the sense of underlying unease to intensify over time.
E.g A radio turns on by itself, a child toy changes position.
The Birth of Urban Gothic Horror
Jekyll and Hyde is usually considered as the first ‘urban gothic’ novel. Gothic revivalists of the 19th century believe the threat is no longer an external force, but rather an evil that is curled inside the very heart of the respectable middle class person. This scared the readers at the time even more, as to some extent, the evil was inescapable. The progressive society with the advancement of the Industrial Revolution caused the dark progress of social and psychological effects. Moral decay was an obsession of the Victorians. By identifying and analysing that fear, they seek to control and contain it.
How to Write Dialogue
Unnatural is natural
Not real speech, but a representation of it.
Aim to capture the flavour of speech (without the boring stale bits)
“Natural speech is full of hesitation, repetitions, omissions... when we’re listening to it in real life, our brains filter this out and extract the essential parts (Pierre, 2011).
The S.A.D method
Dialogue is a function of character. Know the character well so their dialogue flows easily.
Status - Who was the upper hand?
Agenda: What is the purpose of the conversation? What do they hope to gain from it.
Desire: What do they want? (What is their ultimate goal/super objective.)
Inhabit their physical space
Listen to how differently different people talk.
Our physical bodies affect our voice. Spend time imagining yourself as the character.
E.g. Timid & trembling? Broad & bold?
Silence is gold
What people don’t say is just as important as what they do.
What are they avoiding to talk about?
Actions speak louder than words.
Explanation kills drama
Characters should talk to each other, not the audience.
“Good dialogue is a manifestation of behaviour, not an explanation” (Yorke, 2013, p150).
Dialogue is not just a Q & A
Good dialogue is surprising and unpredictable.
Promises excitement, but keeps us waiting for it.
Drip-feeds information but withholds answers.
Be ruthless
Dialogue should either move the story forward or reveal something about the character.
If it does not, take that out!
Always read the dialogue aloud.
Make sure the dialogue can actually be spoken/performed realistically.

The Cappella Palatina as a Result of Multicultural Norman Sicily
The Cappella Palatina, located in Palermo, Sicily, Italy, was built under the rule of Roger II in approximately 1130 CE (Lecture 9). The Cappella Palatina (also known as the Palatine Chapel) was built in a multicultural world that existed in Sicily in the 12th century. Many populations had occupied Sicily over time including, but not limited to, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans (specifically from the Holy Roman Empire). Unlike much of the Holy Roman Empire, Sicily remained as it was once it was taken by the Normans. Due to Count Roger I and King Roger II of Sicily being pragmatists, the type of melding of cultures that occurred in Sicily in this time was made possible; which, is visually exemplified by the creation of the Cappella Palatina. The Cappella Palatina is a result of multicultural Norman Sicily and its multiple artistic influences being melded into one.
The ceiling of the Cappella Palatina consists of painted Arab muqarnas over the nave as well as richly patterned floors in the nave, side isles, and transept, and richly carved columns which reflect the Arab influence in Sicily. The muqarnas are made up of layers of stars which are “...the result of overlaying two squares rotated at 45 degrees…”(Fabrizio Agnello 414). The stars are inlaid in octagons with rhomboidal shapes between them (Agnello 414). This layering of stars is common in Arab art and architecture. In addition the architecture as a whole consists of multiple octagonal forms built out of five different tiers. Once again having the repetition of inorganic shapes to create pattern which defines Arab art and architecture. In addition to the ceiling above the nave, the floor of the chapel has many different sections of repetitive geometric shapes making up a larger patterned section which again defines Arab art and architecture. Lastly, the columns include richly carved chevrons which disregards the traditional anatomy of a column of the corinthian order (Greco-Roman influence).
Alongside the Arab influences, a Byzantine influence is extremely present. While the Cappella Palatina has a “ Western basilican nave with a domed sanctuary… [which is a part of a] ...Byzantine centralized church [but] modified… in order to bring harmony with the nave” (Ernst Kitzinger 270). This a prime example of how two architectural pieces derived from two different cultures was melded into one to create the Cappella Palatina. The chapel is essentially covered in Byzantine inspired mosaics. Traditional Byzantine mosaics include a colossal image of Christ Pantocrator lavishly decorated with gold, jewels, and richly colored stones. Focusing on the Christ Pantocrator, he makes the sign of blessing with his right hand while holding the word with the other. He has a traditional golden halo as well as the greek letters IC and XC (for “Jesus Christ”) surrounding him. The lavish mosaics include many portraits of saints, prophets, and angels.
Norman influence is also present within the chapel. While the columns are richly carved with chevron patterns, the capitals are that of the Corinthian Order. Returning to the architectural layout of the chapel, the chapel is elongated “with its centralized eastern part and its basilican western section with a wooden roof” is a prime example of Roger II’s interest in the outside world and keeping both the original influences of the city but also bring in new ones (Norman influence)(Slobodan Ćurčić).
King Roger II of Sicily (r. 1105-1154) was the son of the Norman count Count Roger I (r. 1071-1101) who helped pave the way to a multicultural Sicily. Roger I, despite at home ruling with an iron fist, realized that in the mediterranean that doesn’t work and in direct result, mainly because he was a pragmatist, kept in place much of the already in place system (Lecture 9). Once Roger II took power and had himself named king, he continued this style of governing except to a higher degree. Roger II spoke Arabic, kept Muslim eunuchs, and sought to appease all who lived there, to keep control of course (Lecture 9). Without Roger II being a pragmatist things like the Cappella Palatina would not have been possible.
Returning to the Cappella Palatina, whose style of architecture can be classified by “the term often used in… literature to describe the phenomenon is hybrid…” (Lecture 9). Roger II’s understanding of how to retain power in Palermo is how things like the Cappella Palatina are possible. The chapel is a symbol of his pragmatism and understanding of how to rule in Sicily.
While, for the most part, Fabrizio Agnello, Slobodan Ćurčić, Ernst Kitzinger, and William Tronzo all focus on different portions of the chapel, at one point or another they address the other influences that exist within the chapel. Only Tronzo looks at the chapel as a whole instead of looking at the individual features of the chapel. Tronzo’s book stems from a trip to Sicily with Kitzinger to study the Byzantine mosaics but turned into more than just that (William Tronzo xix). Kitzinger seems to be the most well rounded on the subjects, based on his article, "The Mosaics of the Cappella Palatina in Palermo: An Essay on the Choice and Arrangement of Subjects" and the fact that all of the other authors both cite and discuss his previous works. Following Kitzinger’s works seems to be what the authors had done and which is emulated in this essay due to the choice of articles and books. Through Kitzinger's works each author dove into a different section of the chapel to examine: Agnello focusing on the painted ceiling of the nave and the richly carved Arab muqarnas, Ćurčić looking, more broadly, at the Arab and Norman influences of the chapel, Kitzinger, in this specific essay, looking at the mosaics of the chapel, and Tronzo with an expanded view of the chapel and its relation to the Normans and Roger II.
Looking at the arguments of the scholars and at the chapel itself, truly exemplifies the mysterious, hybrid artistic culture, but really culture itself that existed in Sicily. Despite looking into many different scholarly works Ernst Kitzinger appeared in them all which lead to the observation of Kitzinger being an expert on not only the Cappella Palatina but on multicultural Sicily in the time of the Norman rule. Understanding this helped to connect thought lines between each scholar either back to something written by Kitzinger or two each other through Kitzinger. The pragmatism that was brought into the ruling party of Sicily by the Normans provided this stage, for a lack of better words, to create grandiose, jewel and gold covered works of art, like the Cappella Palatina, the cathedral at Cefalù, and Monterey. Pragmatism allowed for the melding of cultures into these grandiose displays which exemplified Roger II’s (and later on William I “the Bad” (1054-1166) and William II “the Good” (1166-1189)) power, wealth, and ability to control a diverse population (Lecture 9). Once again returning to the arguments of the scholars, despite the melding in certain portions of the chapel, there are still rough transitions where cultural styles do not quite flow together well. Similarly Roger II’s rule has slight errors, for a lack of better words, where things do not quite match up; for example the coins (tarì) which Roger II put into place which, not all but many, have fake arabic on them to emulate the original coins. In addition they have, on one side, the fake arabic and on the other the the Latin cross and in arabic “the Magnificent,” which Western and “God’s Exalted One” which is Islamic traditionally (Lecture 9). While this essay focuses on the Cappella Palatina primarily, essentially “zooming out” is essential to understand Roger II’s role in cultivating a culture that would produce such hybrid art and architecture.

Linking Words And Their Use In Academic Writing
Tumblr media
Linking words are those words that make connection between sentences and phrases. These words are known as transition words or connecting words. Your writing will become more formal with the proper use of linking words. It helps the reader to understand the sentence easily and to find the connection of the particular sentence with the previous sentence. While writing an academic paper or essay assignment creates a better look at writing. Students should learn the skills of writing by using linking words.
There are different types of linking words in the English language that are used for providing results, giving examples, comparing things, and so on. It plays a crucial role in academic writing. Without proper knowledge of linking words, you get fail to write a perfect assignment, so you should learn the use of linking words in different types of sentences.
Types of Linking Words
There are different kinds of linking words used in English literature and writing. Linking words are categorized in various terms which are utilized to provide different types of situations such as opposition, addition, contrast, comparison, cause and effect, and many others.
For opposite sentences, the lining words use despites, however, in contrast, etc. For adding other information using linking words are as additionally, including, summing up, etc. Similarly, for showing other situations or moods there different linking words are used in sentences.

The Pending Collapse of The ‘Rules-based International Order’ is An Existential Threat to The United States
— March 30, 2021 | RT
Tumblr media

For decades, America styled itself the ‘indispensable nation’ that led the world & it’s now seeking to sustain that role by emphasizing a new Cold War-style battle against ‘authoritarianism’. But it's a dangerous fantasy.
It seems a week cannot go by without US Secretary of State Antony Blinken bringing up the specter of the ‘rules-based international order’ as an excuse for meddling in the affairs of another state or region.
The most recent crisis revolves around allegations that China has dispatched a fleet of more than 200 ships, part of a so-called ‘maritime militia’, into waters of the South China Sea claimed by the Philippines. China says that these vessels are simply fishing boats seeking shelter from a storm. The Philippines has responded by dispatching military ships and aircraft to investigate. Enter Antony Blinken, stage right:
“The United States stands with our ally, the Philippines, in the face of the PRC's maritime militia amassing at WhitsunReef,” Blinken tweeted. “We will always stand by our allies and stand up for the rules-based international order.”
Blinken’s message came a mere 18 hours after he tweeted about his meeting in Brussels with NATO. “Our alliances were created to defend shared values,” he wrote. “Renewing our commitment requires reaffirming those values and the foundation of international relations we vow to protect: a free and open rules-based order.”
Our Rules, Our Order
What this actually means, of course, is that the order is rules-based so long as it is the nation called America that sets these rules and is accepted as the world’s undisputed leader.
Blinken’s fervent embrace of the ‘rules-based international order’ puts action behind the words set forth in the recently published ‘Interim National Security Strategy Guidance’, a White House document which outlines President Joe Biden’s vision “for how America will engage with the world.”
While the specific term ‘rules-based international order’ does not appear in the body of the document, the precepts it represents are spelled out in considerable detail, and conform with the five pillars of the “liberal international order” as set forth by the noted international relations scholars, Daniel Duedney and G. John Ikenberry, in their ground-breaking essay, ‘The nature and sources of liberal international order’, published by the Review of International Studies in 1999.
The origins of this “liberal international order” can be traced back to the end of the Second World War and the onset of a Cold War between Western liberal democracies, helmed by the United States, and the communist bloc nations, led by the Soviet Union and the People's Republic of China. The purpose of this order was simple – to maintain a balance of power between the US-led liberal democracies and their communist adversaries, and to maintain and sustain US hegemony over its liberal democratic allies. This was accomplished through five basic policy ‘pillars’: Security co-binding; the embrace of US hegemony; self-limitation on the part of US allies; the politicization of global economic institutions for the gain of liberal democracies; and Western “civil identity.”
All five are emphasized in Biden’s interim guidance, in which the president openly advocates for “a stable and open international system.” It notes that “the alliances, institutions, agreements, and norms underwriting the international order the United States helped to establish are being tested.”
The Faltering Empire’s Flaws and Inequities
Biden also observed that the restoration of this international order “rests on a core strategic proposition: The United States must renew its enduring advantages so that we can meet today’s challenges from a position of strength. We will build back better our economic foundations; reclaim our place in international institutions; lift up our values at home and speak out to defend them around the world; modernize our military capabilities, while leading first with diplomacy; and revitalize America’s unmatched network of alliances and partnerships.”
All five of Duedney’s and Ikenberry’s policy ‘pillars’ can be found embedded in these – and other – statements contained in the guidance.
There is a defensive tone to Biden’s guidance, which notes that “rapid change and mounting crisis” have exposed “flaws and inequities” in the US-dominated international system which “have caused many around the world – including many Americans – to question its continued relevance.”
Here Biden runs into the fundamental problem of trying to justify and sustain a model of economic-based global hegemony which was founded at a time when the existence of a Western liberal democratic “order” could be justified as a counter to the Soviet-led communist bloc. The Cold War ended in 1990. The ‘international rules-based order’ that was created at the behest of the US to prevail in this conflict continued, however. It seems that the US wasn’t simply satisfied with preventing the spread of communism; its raison d’être instead transitioned from being the leader of an alliance of liberal democracies, to being the global hegemon, using the very system devised to confront communism to instead install and sustain the US as the undisputed dominant power in the world.
This trend began in the immediate aftermath of the end of the Cold War, where the US had the opportunity to pass the baton of global leadership to the United Nations, an act that would have given legitimacy to the notion of an ‘international order’.
This, however, proved a bridge too far for the neo-liberal tendencies of the administration of President Bill Clinton, who continued the Cold War-era practice of using the UN as a vehicle to promote US policy prerogatives at the expense of the international ‘order’. Clinton’s Secretary of State Madeleine Albright helped coin the term “indispensable nation” when defining America’s post-Cold War role in the world (it is notable that Blinken recently praised Albright in a tweet, noting that “her tenacity & effectiveness left the US stronger & more respected globally,” and adding “she’s a role model for me & so many of our diplomats.”)
The arrogance and hubris contained in any notion of a single nation being “indispensable” to the global order is mind-boggling and is reflective of a disconnect with both reality and history on the part of those embracing it.
The Myth of Indispensability
The unsustainability of the premise of American ‘indispensability’ was demonstrated by both the events of September 11, 2001, and the inability of the US to deal with its aftermath. Had the US embraced and acted on President George H. W. Bush’s notion of a “new world order” in the aftermath of the Cold War, it would have found itself as a vital world leader working in concert with a global community of nations to confront the scourge of Islamic fundamentalist-based terrorism. But this was not to be.
Instead, the ‘indispensable nation’ was exposed as a fraud, with many in the world recognizing the US not as a power worthy of emulation, but rather as the source of global angst. This rejection of America’s self-anointed role as global savior extended to many Americans too, who were tired of the costs associated with serving as the world’s police force.
Indeed, this exhaustion with global intervention, and the costs accrued, helped create the foundation of electoral support for Donald Trump’s rejection of the “rules-based international order” in favor of a more distinct “America first” approach to global governance. What gave Trump’s policy so much “punch” was the fact that not only did many American citizens reject the “rules-based international order,” but so did much of the rest of the world.
Repairing the damage done by four years of Trump has become the number one priority of the Biden administration. To do this, both Biden and Blinken recognize that they simply cannot return to the policy formulations that existed before Trump took office; that ship has sailed, and trying to sell the American people and the rest of the world on what many viewed as a failed policy construct (i.e., unilateral, uncontested American hegemony) was seen as an impossible task.
Instead, the Biden administration is seeking to reinvent the original premise of the ‘rules-based international order’ by substituting Russian and Chinese ‘authoritarianism’ in place of Soviet-led communism as a threat which liberal democracies around the world willingly and enthusiastically rally around the US to confront.
“Authoritarianism is on the global march,” Biden’s guidance observed, “and we must join with like minded allies and partners to revitalize democracy the world over. We will work alongside fellow democracies across the globe to deter and defend against aggression from hostile adversaries. We will stand with our allies and partners to combat new threats aimed at our democracies” and which “undermine the rules and values at the heart of an open and stable international system.”
Biden concluded his essay in dramatic fashion. “This moment is an inflection point,” he noted. “We are in the midst of a fundamental debate about the future direction of our world. No nation is better positioned to navigate this future than America. Doing so requires us to embrace and reclaim our enduring advantages, and to approach the world from a position of confidence and strength. If we do this, working with our democratic partners, we will meet every challenge and outpace every challenger. Together, we can and will build back better.”
No Longer The World’s Undisputed No.1
While postulated as a statement of American strength, Biden’s concluding remarks actually project not only the inherent insecurity of the US today, but also its root causes. The fact that the US needs to “reclaim our enduring advantages” implies that we lost them, and illustrates that these so-called advantages are not nearly as enduring as Biden would like to think. “Building back better” is an admission of weakness, a recognition that the notion of an ‘indispensable nation’ is an artificial construct; most nations no longer accept America as the world leader.
The reality is that the US is one of the most powerful nations in the world. That position, however, is no longer uncontested; China has emerged as the equal of the US in many metrics used to measure global power and influence, and superior in some. Moreover, China operates effectively in a multi-polar global reality, recognizing that the era of the American singularity is over. Russia, India, Brazil, and the European collective all represent polar realities whose existence and influence exists independent of the US.
The US, however, cannot function in such a world. While there is a growing recognition among American politicians that the post-Cold War notion of the US being the sole-remaining superpower has run its course, the only alternative these politicians can offer is the attempt to return to a bi-polar world which has the US at the head of its liberal democratic ‘partners’, facing off against the forces of ‘authoritarianism’. This vision, however, is unrealistic, if for no other reason that the world no longer views Western liberal democracy as ‘good’, and authoritarianism as ‘evil’.
This reality is evident to much of the rest of the world. Why, then, would US policy makers embrace a formulation doomed to fail? The answer is simple – the US, as it exists today, needs the ‘rules-based international order’ to remain relevant. Relevant, as used here, means globally dominant.
US politicians who operate on the national level cannot get elected on platforms that reject the ‘indispensable’ role of the country, even if many Americans and most of the world have. US economic dominance is in large part sustained by the very systems that underpin the ‘rules-based international order’ – the World Trade Organization and the World Bank. US geopolitical relevance is sustained by Cold War-era military alliances.
An Unviable, Unsustainable Future
An American retreat from being the ‘indispensable’ power, and a corresponding embrace of a leadership role based upon a more collegial notion of shared authorities, would not mean the physical demise of the US – the nation would continue to exist as a sovereign entity. But it would mean an end to the psychological reality of America as we know it today – a quasi-imperial power whose relevance is founded on compelled global hegemony. This model is no longer viable. The fact that the Biden administration has chosen to define its administration through an ardent embrace of this failed system is proof positive that the survival of post-Cold War American is existentially connected to its ability to function as the world’s ‘indispensable nation’.
American exceptionalism is a narcotic that fuels the country’s domestic politics more than global geo-political reality. The ‘rules-based international order’ that underpins this fantasy is unsustainable in the modern era and makes the collapse of the “exceptional” United States inevitable.
Watching the Biden administration throw its weight behind a US-dominated ‘rules-based international order’ is like watching the Titanic set sail; it is big, bold, and beautiful, and its fate pre-ordained.
