During the summer, General Motors made the surprising announcement of offering a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that the automaker calls the Tripower in its strong-selling Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups. Now, the company opens up about more of the four-pot mill’s specs in the 2019 Silverado so that we can see how the first four-cylinder, fullsize truck in recent memory stacks up.
The 2.7-liter turbo four-cylinder isn’t technically the base engine in the Silverado. It comes standard on the volume-selling LT trim, but the basic Work Truck, Custom, and Custom Trail Boss still come standard with the old 4.3-liter naturally aspirated V6.

The 2.7-liter turbo produces 310 horsepower (231 kilowatts) and 348 pound-feet (472 Newton-meters), and we are comparing it against the powerplants in the 2018 Ford F-150, 2018 Nissan Titan, 2019 Ram 1500, and 2018 Toyota Tundra. We include two Ford engines below because Chevy’s new mill sits roughly in between the Blue Oval’s offerings. The rest are the base powerplant for each model.

Given the relative lack of displacement, Chevy’s four-cylinder definitely stands up to the competition. In terms of horsepower, it ties with the 4.6-liter V8 in the Tundra to take third place. The four-cylinder also ranks third place in torque behind Ford’s optional 2.7-liter EcoBoost and the much larger, 5.6-liter V8 in the Nissan Titan.
So far, Chevrolet only provides estimated city fuel economy for the 2.7-liter, so let’s see how it compares.

The new four-cylinder is in at least a three-way tie to lead the class in fuel economy. According to the EPA, the flex-fuel version of the Ford V6 also gets 20 mpg city, which would make the results even closer. Chevy doesn’t have 2019 model year mileage info for the 4.3-liter V6, yet.
The Silverado swaggers into the pickup market:
A truck must be able to work, and with its latest announcement, we now know about the 2.7-liter turbo’s payload and towing capability in the Silverado. Keep in mind, these figures vary depending on a pickup’s configuration, including the drivetrain, cab style, and bed length. The specs below reflect the best possible numbers for a truck with each engine. Details for the existing 4.3-liter V6 in the new Silverado aren’t yet available.

Once again, the Silverado’s turbocharged four-cylinder looks pretty good, here. Its payload is in third place among these pickups behind the Ram’s V6 and Ford 2.7-liter EcoBoost – an optional engine on the truck. Towing appears a bit weaker at 7,200 pounds, which only ranks above the 4.6-liter V8 in the Tundra.
We don’t yet have info for all of the 2019 model year pickups, but the 2.7-liter turbo starts at $38,395 in the Silverado. It’ll be on sale in the fourth quarter of the year.

Standard on LT and RST trims, the 2.7L engine offers 14 percent more torque and 13 percent better city fuel economy and it is more than a full second quicker 0-60 mph than the 4.3L V-6 it replaces. The Silverado city fuel economy also exceeds the standard 3.3L V-6 engine offering in the Ford F-150 XLT (EPA-estimated 19 mpg city) and matches that of the Ram 1500 3.6L V-6 mild hybrid (EPA-estimated 20 mpg city).
The new Silverado also delivers the largest cargo volume of any full-size truck on the market, so customers don’t have to sacrifice space for efficiency. They’ll also enjoy Silverado’s full-size truck capability and durability. The new 2.7L Turbo engine delivers an SAE-certified 310 horsepower and 348 lb-ft of torque, exceeding Ford’s 3.3L V-6 and Ram’s 3.6L V-6 mild hybrid by 31 percent and 29 percent respectively. The Silverado 2.7L Turbo reaches its peak torque more quickly than Ford or Ram engines in the segment and delivers it from 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. Customers will feel that power as the truck can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds. Its max towing capacity is 7,200 pounds and there is a 2,280-pound max payload.*

Road Tests: 2018 Ford F-150

You’d think that after bringing an aluminum body to the full-size pickup ranks just 3 years ago, ford would be done with the F-150 for a while. But the light duty f-series didn’t become America’s long time number one selling vehicle by staying the same year after year. So, it’s no real surprise that ford has unleashed an updated F-150 for 2018.
To be fair, as far as updates go, the 2018 Ford F-150 is far from comprehensive; but Ford is out to give you many more choices when you go in to buy one. 
Having already brought a lot new to the full-size truck segment over the last few years, with a choice of EcoBoost engines and features such as trailer back-up assist…
…this year, Ford brings a new 3.3-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine to replace the 3.5-liter, as well as a new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, and an updated 5.0-liter V8; along with wider availability of their 10-speed automatic transmission, and making auto stop/start standard with all engines. 
But bigger than all of that is a first-time 3.0-liter V6 Power Stroke diesel option that will be arriving soon, with 250-horsepower and 440 lb.-ft. of torque. It will also achieve 30 mpgs on the highway, according to Ford; and will pull 11,400-lbs. of trailer. 
We just got back from sampling the new Power Stroke in Colorado. First impressions? It’s a quiet oil burner for sure, both outside the vehicle and inside. 
With tow mode engaged, it had no problems towing a 3-ton horse trailer. Uphill grades still require a downshift or two from the 10-speed automatic, but we were steadily increasing our speed as we were climbing. 
It felt even better around town without the trailer, instant torque is always a good thing as far as we’re concerned; and this little Power Stroke delivers plenty of it, in a very refined fashion. 
Regardless of powertrain, all ‘18s get an updated exterior with a new billet-look grille, revised front and rear bumpers, new tailgate, and upgraded lighting; as well as fresh trim and wheel options.  All keeping it arguably the toughest looking rig among the big-3. 
For testing here at home, our Lariat Sport SuperCrew was sporting the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, and it packs a serious performance punch. Horsepower stays the same as last year at 325, but torque takes a healthy leap from 375 lbs.-ft. to 400; with all of it delivered well below 3,000 RPM… 
…and delivering us to 60 in just 5.7-seconds. There’s explosive power off the line; so much, that we had much better success launching in four-wheel-drive to get traction. 
Shifts are quick and tidy, with power delivery staying consistent throughout the 14.3-seconds it took us to complete the ¼-mile at 99 miles-per-hour. Those times are just a few tenths off the last SVT Lighting we tested back in 2001. Such numbers were crazy for a pickup truck at that time, now they’re just commonplace.  
Handling has changed a lot in a little time as well. The clunky disconnected feel you expect in a pickup has been replaced with blazingly fast steering, confidence inspiring grip, and minimal body roll.  
Braking performance is excellent as well; just 108-feet is all it took to bring this heavyweight hauler to a stop from 60. 
Away from the track, the ride has gotten smoother, but not quite to Ram-level of plushness. Here, the F-150 still feels like a truck, just a very comfortable one. 
Capabilities continue to escalate in the ongoing battle for pickup supremacy. As of right now, the F-150 is tops in towing at 13,200-lbs., thought that’s with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine and 2-wheel-drive.
Changes inside for ’18 are relatively minor, just some new seat and trim materials for most trims including our Lariat.
Bigger updates for available safety systems, now including adaptive cruise control with full stop-and-go functionality and Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection. 
Government Fuel Economy Ratings for the new 2.7-liter EcoBoost are 19-City, 24-Highway, and 21-Combined. That’s only slightly worse than average for all vehicles, with an Energy Impact Score of 15.7-barrels of yearly oil use combined with 7.0-tons of CO2 emissions.
As for pricing, you can spend as little as $29,100 for a base Regular Cab XL, though most people will spend somewhere in the 40’s for their F-150. Our 4X4 SuperCrew Lariat Sport stickered for just over $50,000; and for the really big spenders, King Ranch and Platinum trims are higher still. 
While the Ford F-150 has maintained its place as the number one selling vehicle in the U.S. for 35 years, 2018 looks to be a year where they’ll face their toughest competition ever. All-new trucks from Chevrolet, GMC, and Ram are clearly designed with the express purpose of challenging Ford’s supremacy. Not to mention the increasing presence from import branded rigs Toyota Tundra and Nissan Titan. It will be an interesting sales year for sure; but ultimately, one that we think will continue to see the Ford F-150 riding high.

5 Reasons to Buy a Full-Size SUV Over a Large Crossover and 5 Reasons Not to
Many consumers nowadays overlook traditional, body-on-frame SUVs due to the rising popularity of crossovers. Their car-like driving characteristics and generous cargo capacity make crossovers more versatile, but are consumers missing out on some qualities that only a “real” SUV can offer? Here we’ll give you five reasons why a full-size SUV may be the better pick and five reasons to opt for a large three-row crossover instead. Five Reasons to Buy the Full-Size SUV
SUVs–They can tow
Would you rather tow your boat with a crossover or a Chevrolet Tahoe? Exactly. Crossovers have a hard time competing with full-size SUVs in this category. The Tahoe boasts a maximum towing capacity of 8,600 pounds with a trailering package in rear-drive form with a 5.3-liter V-8. The Traverse, on the other hand, can handle just 5,000 pounds when properly equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 and a trailering package.
SUVs–They’re higher
Many consumers will ditch sedans in favor of crossovers because they want to ride higher on the road. But SUVs provide an even more commanding position over one’s surroundings. A higher ground clearance might also make consumers more confident on less-than-even terrain. Since an increasing number of crossovers are adopting swoopy designs, some find that more boxy SUVs have better visibility, as well. Plus, the added height and bulk of an SUV might help it dodge the parentmobile stigma that comes with many crossovers.
SUV–They thrive off-road
While many large crossovers offer all-wheel drive, you can’t beat the off-road capabilities of an SUV with true four-wheel drive. The aforementioned extra ground clearance doesn’t hurt either. All-wheel-drive systems typically lack a low range feature that uses a lower gear ratio to maximize available torque. And although all-wheel-drive systems can offer locking center differentials that split torque evenly between the front and rear axles, part-time four-wheel-drive systems can offer front or rear lockers that rotate both wheels on an axle at the same speed, helping to ensure at least one wheel finds traction instead of both spinning aimlessly. Many modern traction control systems can simulate that effect using the brakes, but there’s nothing like having the real thing when you’re stuck on a difficult trail.
SUVs–They have long-wheelbase versions
Sometimes the standard size just isn’t enough. For those who really need to maximize interior space, a long-wheelbase SUV may be the only way to go. Instead of the Chevrolet Tahoe, buyers can opt for the bigger Suburban. The Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, and Cadillac Escalade also offer long-wheelbase versions.
SUVs–They’re more powerful
You will encounter three-row crossovers with puny four-cylinder engines, but you won’t find them in the mighty full-size SUV category. Instead, they have V-6 and V-8 engines that are typically quite powerful. Sometimes that makes them quicker than their three-row crossover counterparts. In our tests, an all-wheel-drive 2017 Nissan Pathfinder reached 60 mph in 7.4 seconds, but it only took the heavier, but V-8-powered, 2018 Armada Platinum 4WD 6.2 seconds to hit this mark. We also clocked three different 2014-2015 Toyota Highlanders at 7.1 seconds, behind the 2017 Sequoia’s time of 6.6 seconds. Of course, there’s a downside to being more powerful…
Five Reasons to Buy the Loaded, Three-Row Crossover
Crossovers–They get better fuel economy
We doubt this is a surprise, but crossovers easily win the fuel economy game. The Toyota Highlander provides a rather extreme example of this difference. The gas-powered version tops out at 21/27 mpg city/highway, while the hybrid version nets an even more impressive 29/27 mpg. But the Sequoia gets a miserable 13/17 mpg. Other large SUV EPA ratings include the 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe that’s rated at 16/22-23 mpg, and the 2018 Ford Expedition that’s rated at 17/22-24 mpg (the longer Expedition Max is a bit lower).
Crossovers–They’re more affordable
Three-row crossovers start at a much lower price point than full-size SUVs. For example, the Ford Explorer starts at just under $33,000 before incentives, but it’ll cost you at least $52,890 before incentives for the new 2018 Expedition. It’s true that three-row crossovers can creep well past $50,000 on the higher trim levels, but even if you plunk down this money, you’re getting tons of features and technologies as well as higher-quality materials.
Crossovers –They’re more maneuverable
No one buys a three-row crossover for its superb handling, but they’re generally easier to lug around than a full-size SUV. You’ll likely find it easier to maneuver a three-row crossover into a small parking space, thanks in part to the lower ride height compared to full-size SUVs. Often, the crossovers are shorter in length than their full-size SUV counterparts. That’s the case for vehicles like the Highlander and Pathfinder, although the Traverse is about the same length as the Tahoe.
Crossovers–They offer superior ride quality
Consider some of the vehicles that share platforms with full-size SUVs. The Tahoe rides on the same platform as the Silverado and the Sequoia shares its bones with the Tundra. Meanwhile, crossovers typically sit on car-based platforms, giving them an edge when it comes to ride quality. Plus, big wheels and off-road-tuned suspensions put full-size SUVs further behind the curve when it comes to on-road comfort.
Crossovers–They’re “transition” vehicles
Switching from a sedan to a crossover is much less of a leap than switching from a sedan to a full-size SUV. And that’s not just true of sedans, but it also applies to pretty much any other category of vehicle including wagons, hatchbacks, and minivans. Many will argue that crossovers provide the best of all worlds, combining an easy ride and car-like handling with a commanding ride height and plenty of storage and passenger space.

Pickups have long been the U.S. auto industry's hardest-fought sector, with stakes so high that no potential advantage is seen as too costly and no gain goes uncontested. But the competition will be even more heated in 2018 as Ford, General Motors and FCA US pursue new strategies for their truck lineups.
GM made a splash in Texas this month by showing off its redesigned Chevrolet Silverado, which it promised will be leaner and meaner when it debuts late next year. Ford will lob two shells into the segment in 2018: a light-duty diesel for its F-150 and the return of the midsize Ranger to challenge GM's Colorado/Canyon combination.
And FCA will throw the first full redesign of its Ram 1500 pickup since the 2009 model at its two crosstown competitors in January. Then, late in the year, it will introduce the first midsize Jeep pickup in a couple of decades.
"The pickup truck segment has reached into a hypercompetitive mode, and consumers are benefiting from more power, improved fuel economy and increased comfort," said Dave Sullivan, senior analyst at AutoPacific. "What's interesting is that all three pickups are really deviating from each other. They are all going their own way when it comes to materials, powertrains and drivetrains."
The full-size pickup segment has grown 5.5 percent through November, while the overall light-truck market — which includes crossovers and SUVs — is up 4.7 percent, according to the Automotive News Data Center. Those hot segments stick out in a U.S. market off 1.4 percent this year, mainly because of much weaker car demand.
But regardless of roiling segments, there is no doubt that pickups are the U.S. kings: The Ford F series has been the nation's top-selling vehicle for nearly four decades, with the Silverado now at No. 2, followed by the Ram pickup.
Sales of the F series have risen 10 percent through November, while Ram sales are up 3.2 percent. Silverado sales have slipped 0.5 percent from a year ago and the GMC Sierra has fallen 3.5 percent.
The Toyota Tundra has gained in the segment, with sales up 1.4 percent through November, but it remains far below the fourth-place Sierra.
Nissan Titan sales have more than doubled from a year ago, yet Nissan's full-size pickup volume remains a fraction of its domestic competitors.
One long-sought number remains out of reach for the pickup contenders: an EPA rating of 30 mpg in highway driving. Yet that milestone could be attained in 2018 with the latest pickups. Some analysts speculated Ford would achieve the feat with its change to aluminum. But the 2018 F-150 is rated at 26 mpg in highway driving with a 2.7-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine and 10-speed automatic transmission.
The current-generation 2018 Ram 1500 with a 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine gets up to 29 mpg with an aerodynamics package, while the Ram's 3.6-liter V-6 engine is rated at 25 mpg highway. Both Ram models come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 2018 Silverado is rated at 24 mpg highway with a 4.3-liter V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission.
Mixed materials
GM's slippage in the segment this year may have been motivation to lift the veil early on its redesigned Silverado this month, nearly a year ahead of its planned production. Chevrolet said it would use mixed materials to shed weight, boost fuel economy and enhance functionality of its twin pickups.
Chevrolet did not specify how much steel and aluminum will be used on the new truck, but it's expected to be a mix of both materials and other lightweight components.
GM said changes in engineering and materials will result in "a significant reduction in total vehicle weight" and "improved performance in many measures." Eventually, the company is expected to offer a pickup bed that uses carbon fiber.
Alan Batey, president of GM's North America operations, said the automaker's next-generation pickup will have "a stronger, roll-formed steel alloy for the bed and floor, contributing to a cargo box that is both lighter and even more functional than ever before."
Rangers, diesels
Since the F series was redesigned in 2014 and given an aluminum body, Ford has added features nearly every model year, including a 10-speed transmission, a Raptor performance variant and swankier trims.
Spring will mark the first time in the F-150's storied history that it is available with a diesel, though performance details have not been released.
Later in the year, Ford will begin building Ranger midsize pickups in the U.S. for the first time since 2011, competing with the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, Honda Ridgeline, Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon.
Overall, Ford expects to sell just shy of 900,000 F-series trucks in 2017, not far off its record of nearly 940,000 in 2004.
"Certainly, there will be activity," said Todd Eckert, Ford's truck marketing manager. "But at the same time ... we really feel like we have an outstanding lineup to be competitive like we have been. That's what leaders do, and we're very confident in our product going forward."
Eckert said Ford will try to stay disciplined on incentives as Ram and Chevy likely put more cash on the hood to help move old models off dealer lots.
"Affordability continues to be very important, but we continue to feel very strong about our product and it fitting the needs of our customers, and that's how we'll continue to go to market," Eckert said.
FCA will reveal the details of its redesigned Ram 1500 at the Detroit auto show and likely will begin producing it the same week. Spy photographers caught much of the Ram 1500's new styling after a strong breeze blew the cover off a preproduction model this fall, revealing many secrets.
Under the hood, the next-generation Ram will have upgraded engines, complete with a 48-volt mild-hybrid belt-start generator system to improve fuel economy, as well as improved suspension systems.
It's also expected to shed weight from current versions, have a larger crew cab and come with the latest version of FCA's Uconnect infotainment system to go with a reworked interior.
FCA will continue to produce its current-generation DS Ram 1500 for at least a year while production of the new DT ramps up at a retooled plant in Sterling Heights, Mich., in suburban Detroit. The move should enable Ram to produce record numbers of pickups, with the current version packing the lower end of the trim and price spectrum.
In the fourth quarter of 2018, about the time the next-generation Silverado and Sierra are hitting the market, FCA will start building the Scrambler, a Wrangler-based pickup. The Scrambler will feature a midsize pickup bed attached to a four-door cabin similar to the 2018 Wrangler Unlimited. It also will carry the Wrangler's off-road suspension system.
Largely because of the Jeep badge, FCA expects to be able to sell the Scrambler at a substantial premium compared with competitors in the medium pickup segment.

Speaking to Automotive News at the State Fair of Texas, Toyota group vice president of marketing Ed Laukes said the company has updates for its body-on-frame vehicles in the pipeline.
“We are working on [updates to our body-on-frame platforms] right now,” Laukes told AN. “To continue to be able to address that, we have to work on upgrades. Let’s face it, the competition is getting stronger and stronger. Things like the [Ford] Ranger coming back. We have to be able to address that. Now, the Tacoma was completely redone. But 4Runner, Sequoia, Tundra…those are being worked on as we speak.”
In addition to a redesigned exterior and interior, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma received a new 3.5-liter V-6 engine option, a new six-speed automatic transmission, and more high-strength steel in its frame to increase rigidity and lower weight. The Tundra received a major refresh for the 2014 model year and gets another minor one for 2018, but the updates are mostly cosmetic. The 4Runner received a refresh in 2013, but its chassis and engine date back to 2009. The Sequoia gets a refresh for 2018, but is essentially the same full-size SUV it was when it debuted for the 2008 model year.
Laukes also wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a hybrid pickup.
“There’s absolutely no reason we couldn’t have a hybrid truck,” he said. “All those options, we’re exploring. When you’re trying to raise [corporate average fuel economy] limits for the entire brand, there’s no option that isn’t on the table.”
He didn’t say which truck might get a hybrid variant, but did say the Tacoma would be getting powertrain upgrades in order to stay competitive.
“We’re going to continue to work on all the improvements that are going to be necessary to keep Tacoma at the top of the class. So powertrains are obviously a big piece of anyone’s equation as we work on CAFE standards.”

2019 Ram 1500 First Look: Welcome Wagons
Since its 2009 model-year launch, the current Ram has very gradually increased its share of the full-size truck market from 16 to 22 percent. Half-ton pickup buyers are fiercely loyal, and indeed no other manufacturer has seen fluctuations of more than a couple percent during that time, which suggests that Ram is growing by snagging first-time truck buyers. It makes sense that the truck with the most carlike ride might attract unbiased folks moving out of cars or crossovers, so for 2019 Ram is amping up the comfort, efficiency, and luxury of its 1500 models to keep those newcomers coming.
Headline upgrades include 48-volt mild hybridization, a claim to the longest and strongest chassis, and class-leading 0.357 Cd aerodynamics. Will this be enough to continue attracting new blood in the face of a recently refreshed 2018 Truck of the Year–winning Ford F-150, an anticipated all-new Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra duo expected in 2019, and a renewed Toyota Tundra arriving shortly thereafter?
Let’s start with what’s not new: the interior window switches, the pickup box floor stampings, and some fasteners. Although the gasoline powertrains mostly carry over, the Pentastar V-6 and Hemi V-8 engines both employ fancy new eTorque starter/generators that store deceleration energy in a 0.43-kW-hr battery pack. The energy is then fed back to the powertrain in such a way as to optimize fuel economy—like helping sustain a cruising speed without downshifting or reverting from four- to eight-cylinder mode. More than 40 shift maps allow the eight-speed transmission and the eTorque motors to cooperate to wring every possible mile from a gallon of gas. The V-6’s unit is water-cooled and contributes 12 hp and 90 lb-ft; the V-8’s is air-cooled and delivers 16 hp and 130 lb-ft. These motors start the engine in 0.55 second after an auto stop, and they’re used on initial starts except in cold conditions, when a conventional starter does the job.
Two more novel fuel-economy boosters: A heater/cooler for the rear differential oil in rear-drive trucks enables the use of lighter-weight lower-friction oil, and a pair of active mass dampers on the frame cancel vibration so the Hemi can lug a bit more in cylinder deactivation mode without anyone feeling it. The ultimate fuel-saver, an EcoDiesel V-6, arrives later in 2019 without eTorque mild hybridization (that same engine in the new Wrangler produces a Ford F-150 Power Stroke diesel-besting 260 hp and 442 lb-ft).
Let’s talk chassis: The entirely new, 98 percent high-strength-steel ladder frame features a taller, narrower boxed cross-section that improves bending strength. Octagonal-section front frame-rail extensions are mandrel-bent and welded into that shape from tailor-rolled sheet steel that varies from 3 to 2 mm thick going forward to ensure they crumple. These octo-rails splay outward to capture small-offset crash forces. Despite a 4-inch wheelbase stretch (to a claimed longest in class), the new frame dropped 100 pounds for a 17 percent weight savings. Max payload increases by 420 pounds to 2,300, and towing capacity increases from 10,650 to 12,700 pounds. (That beats Chevy, Nissan, and Toyota but falls short of Ford’s 3,270 and 13,200 ratings.)
Other chassis upgrades include a novel upper control arm made of reinforced nylon molded around a steel stamping. It doesn’t save weight, but it efficiently adds the strength needed to permit a 22-inch wheel option on 4×4 models. New frequency-response dampers from Hitachi—a Ram exclusive feature—greatly improve ride quality, especially on high-frequency chatter bumps. (Rebels still get off-road-optimized reservoir shocks.) New variable-rate rear coil springs help comfortably shoulder heavy loads without bottoming out.
Available off-road options include an electronic-locking rear differential and unique rear-axle-locating geometry to raise the coil-spring suspension’s ride height by an inch. This setup becomes standard on Rebel models, lowering the entry cost relative to the 2018 model with standard air ride. Upsizing the base wheel from 17 to 18 inches allows the front brakes to grow from 13.2 to 14.9 inches in diameter, which shaves a claimed 7 feet from the 60–0-mph stopping distance. (We’ve measured 122 to 138 feet.)
That claimed class-leading aero figure—a 9 percent improvement over the current generation—is due primarily to a new active front air dam that lowers 2.7 inch at speeds above 35 mph and rises again below 15 mph. It’s standard on all coil-sprung Rams except Rebels and those with the Off-Road package. Raising the sides of the bed by 1.3 inches and sculpting a vortex-generator into the center of the trailing edge of the roof to manage airflow over the truck helped considerably (and gave Ram the largest standard box capacity). The HFE fuel-economy-special model adds flatter, smoother wheels and air-damming running boards that span between the front and rear tires.
Another 100 pounds came out of the body, thanks to clever hydroforming of the front upper crash rails and tailgate surround structure and use of aluminum for the hood and tailgate (the latter saving 15 pounds). Speaking of the tailgate, it offers electric release, a tailgate-ajar warning, damped lowering from any height, and assist with lifting. Added content like this conspires to limit net weight reduction to about 130 pounds—not bad for a cab body that’s said to measure roughly 4 inches longer and a half inch wider and lower.
Ram is parting with a few storied design icons for 2019. Gone is the cross-hair grille, replaced by seven designs featuring a revised Ram wordmark in the center, most of which are offered in multiple finishes. The ram’s head logo, which dates to 1981, gets updated to a more angular look and now adorns the tailgate of all but the Rebel model, which retains the giant wordmark.
The low-fender/high-hood big-rig look is only hinted at now—the fender gets taller and narrower and the hood bulge widens. Oh, and those tacked-on fender flares that adorn over half of all Rams are tacked on more robustly to reduce car-wash warranty claims. And hallelujah! Ram has ditched the metal mast radio antenna most pickups still employ.
Six price classes plus HFE are now offered: Tradesman, Big Horn, Rebel, Laramie, Longhorn, and Limited. These are amply differentiated, thanks to three headlamp and taillamp designs, the aforementioned array of grilles, 15 wheel designs spanning 18-inch steel through 22-inch aluminum (all of which now attach with six bolts, up from five), and the choice of chrome, blackout, or body color for various trim pieces. Also new: Sport (body color trim) and Black appearance packages are available across nearly all of the lower price classes instead of occupying a single rung on the price ladder. Speaking of ladders, a motorized running board is now available.
New electrical architecture brings all the expected safety gear, including available adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind-spot detection with trailer sensing, and 360-degree camera view. Parallel and perpendicular parking assistance is offered, but trailer-backing assistance is not. Ram expects to achieve best-in-class safety ratings.
Interior space, comfort, and noise levels will all take a big step forward in 2019, we’re assured. On crew cab models, the aforementioned 4-inch stretch amounts to an extra inch in the front and rear doors plus 2 inches behind the rear door. (The eTorque battery and a subwoofer reside behind the rear seat.) The rear floor is now completely flat and features four tie-down rings and in-floor stowage bins that are enlarged to fit the receiver drop hitch. The seat bottom flips up as before to facilitate carrying large items indoors. Beneath it is a 1.4-cubic-foot storage area (twice as big as before) that can now accommodate rifles or fishing rods. On upper trim models, the rear cushion can slide forward 3.1 inches, reclining the backrest 8 degrees in the process. The entire center third of the seat back folds down as an armrest and cupholders, forming both a more comfy armrest and a better third-passenger backrest.
All of the price classes look classier, with even the cloth or vinyl-lined Tradesman variants getting some contrast stitching and a 3.5-inch color driver-information screen in the cluster. These bench-seat models get a three-point center front seat belt for 2019. Big Horn models add the option of two-tone interior trim. Rebels get red anodized trim and other red accents, seats with inserts patterned after its new Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tire tread, and a larger 7.0-inch info screen in the cluster. Laramie leather seats get suede bolster inserts, and Longhorn models add filigree accents in the leather and wood trim.
The Limited trim is what happens when a company has no Imperial sedan with which to separate rich folks from big money. The wood veneers have argent stripes laminated in, and there’s all sorts of fancy embroidery. Leather covers the dash, console sides, and seat backs, and the navy blue and “frost” two-tone leather treatment would suit Aston Martin’s first pickup truck. These trucks reportedly offer more real wood, leather, and metal trim than any other. And between acoustic-laminated glass and active noise cancelation on all models, Ram claims this will be the market’s quietest truck. So much the better to enjoy the top 900-watt 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
