Peter’s car decides to break down on the interstate in the middle of Tennessee on the hottest recorded day of the year so far, because you know what? Why not. 

He’s on the way down to a convention in Texas as a representative for Stark Industries- on Tony’s behalf, of course. The car’s a borrowed 2004 Toyota Camry; it had been Ben’s before he’d died and neither May or Peter had been able to conjure up the courage to get rid of it. 

Of course now, on the side of the road in Middle of Nowhere, Tennessee, Peter wishes he’d compacted the stupid thing when its brakes had failed back in 2018. It isn’t the brakes this time (thank God), but the fuel.

The damn fuel.

Peter Parker, twenty-year-old MIT biotechnology graduate and pioneer in his field, had forgotten to fill the tank all the way at the last stop.

The sun beats down on the back of his neck as he steps out of the car and makes his way around the front to check under the hood (just in case). He can already feel sweat gathering in beads on his forehead, his face flushing what he knows must be fire-truck red from the heat. 

He didn’t even bother to bring sunscreen.

He’s going to die.

Okay, so maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration. It just feels like he’s going to die.

Peter slides back into his dead car, closes the door, and rests his forehead against the steering wheel with a heavy sigh. The temperature inside the Camry keeps rising- he can feel every little increase and knows that, once it gets to a certain point, the spider inside of him is going to kick it and he’ll probably pass out.

Awesome. Something to look forward to.

Peter waits in the car for what seems like hours. He doesn’t know what he’s waiting for- death? A God-given miracle? They feel like the same thing right now.

Wow, he really should’ve done drama club back in high school. He’d have been great.

So he waits, and it gets hotter and hotter until he’s forced to take off his flannel. Just as he’s getting ready to get out of the car and walk to the nearest gas station, which (according to Google Maps) is about six miles down the road, a pair of fingers rap against his window.

Drowsy from the sun, Peter traces the line of the fingers up to an elbow, a cuffed flannel shirt, a concerned pair of bright blue eyes, a head of curly hair. His judgment is impaired so, of course, he opens the window for a random stranger in the middle of nowhere and blinks as the sun’s rays filter through.

“You alright, man?” The stranger asks, voice tinged with a thick Southern accent. “Your car break down?”

“Yeah,” Peter breathes, staring into those bright eyes. “Forgot to fill up the tank.”

Hissing in sympathy, the stranger reaches into the car and opens Peter’s door from the inside before leaning down and helping him out. Peter tries to ignore the way his heart is pounding as he’s held close to solid shoulders and thanks God that his face is already red enough to hide what he knows is a rosy blush.

“You look overheated.”

“Prob’ly am. ‘M Peter. Parker.”

He heaves a quiet laugh, leading Peter toward a large black truck idling by the side of the road. “Harley Keener. C’mon.”

It’s a bad idea to let this man take him anywhere, but Peter’s in no state to fight at this point, so he doesn’t. Besides, his spider-sense is suspiciously quiet at the back of his neck. If something was wrong with Harley, he has no doubt that it would be going off.

Peter lets Harley help him into the shotgun seat of the truck and sighs blissfully as cool waves of air hit his face. “You’re a lifesaver, man,” he says, chuckling quietly to himself. “A pretty lifesaver.”

Fully-awake Peter would not have said that.

Peter is not fully awake.

But Harley just laughs and closes the driver’s side, shaking his head. “You’re not so bad yourself, damsel in distress.”

This time, Peter knows that his blush isn’t fully hidden by his overheated face. Harley notices, too, biting his lower lip as he pulls the truck off of the side of the road and starts off in the direction that Peter vaguely remembers the gas station being. 

He kind of hates feeling helpless like this, but on the other hand, he loves riding shotgun with Harley Keener.

The custody fight ended with their mother eventually taking her own life. She trained both twins differently: choosing to enhance Hyunah’s skills in edged weaponry and Hyoyeon’s in hand-to-hand combat. 

It wasn’t long before crime took over the cities of Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Incheon, and so on. Fighting erupts in Myanmar; junta to ‘consider’ ASEAN plan (Reuters) Karen insurgents attacked a Myanmar army outpost near the Thai border on Tuesday in some of the most intense clashes since a military coup nearly three months ago threw the country into crisis. The Karen National Union (KNU), Myanmar’s oldest rebel force, said it had captured the army camp on the west bank of the Salween river, which forms the border with Thailand. The Myanmar military later hit back against the insurgents with air strikes, the KNU and Thai authorities said. The fighting took place as the junta, in a setback for diplomatic efforts by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), said it would “positively” consider the bloc’s suggestions to end the turmoil in Myanmar but only when stability was restored.

Shipping Containers Plunge Overboard as Supply Race Raises Risks (Bloomberg) Containers piled high on giant vessels carrying everything from car tires to smartphones are toppling over at an alarming rate, sending millions of dollars of cargo sinking to the bottom of the ocean as pressure to speed deliveries raises the risk of safety errors. The shipping industry is seeing the biggest spike in lost containers in seven years. More than 3,000 boxes dropped into the sea last year, and more than 1,000 have fallen overboard so far in 2021. The accidents are disrupting supply chains for hundreds of U.S. retailers and manufacturers such as Amazon and Tesla. There are a host of reasons for the sudden rise in accidents. Weather is getting more unpredictable, while ships are growing bigger, allowing for containers to be stacked higher than ever before. But greatly exacerbating the situation is a surge in e-commerce after consumer demand exploded during the pandemic, increasing the urgency for shipping lines to deliver products as quickly as possible.

Ungrounding (Skift) Last year saw the mass grounding of commercial aircraft as airlines grappled with an utter collapse in demand for their services, and in the United States, those mothballed planes are getting ready to re-enter service. At American Airline’s Tulsa maintenance base, idled jets are getting revamped ahead of a summer when most of the carrier’s 1,400 jet fleet will re-enter the skies. Reactivating a single 737 takes 1,000 person-hours and costs about $39,340 in labor alone. That is, comparatively, cheap, at least stacked against the $10 million impairment charge taken for each of the 150 aircraft it retired last year.

A 52-year-old man died in a multivehicle crash that triggered an hourslong shutdown of the southbound 605 Freeway in Norwalk early Tuesday, officials said.

The collision, which also left another person seriously hurt, happened at around 3 a.m. on the No. 5 southbound lane south of Alondra Boulevard, according to California Highway Patrol.

A construction zone in the area caused a slowdown, CHP said. When the driver of a 2010 Kia Soul approached stopped traffic, he failed to decelerate and slammed into the back of a 1995 Toyota Camry, according to investigators.

That impact caused the Toyota to hit the 2018 Freightliner truck in front of it, CHP said.

The driver of the Kia, who apparently was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash, died at the scene, authorities said. CHP described him as a 52-year-old Cerritos man. His name is being withheld until next of kin could be notified.

The Toyota driver, 68-year-old Manuel Guerrero of La Puente, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, CHP said.

The driver of the big rig, identified as 57-year-old Ki Ho Baek of La Puente, did not sustain any injuries.

Authorities closed the right three lanes of the freeway for about 4 1/2 hours to investigate the incident and clean up the scene, according to CHP.

Video from the site showed a heavily damaged red sedan disabled across two lanes, facing the side of the big rig.

The busy freeway fully reopened at around 7:30 a.m.

Investigators do not suspect that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

2020 Honda Accord: What to Expect From the Class-Leading Midsize Sedan

Fun fact: The compelling Honda Accord came close to becoming the 2018 MotorTrend Car of the Year. The three-time comparison-winning Alfa Romeo Giulia was our deserving winner, but the Accord and Kia Stinger also earned first-place votes from judges. With the 2020 Honda Accord’s arrival right around the corner, we started to wonder how the midsize sedan will fight back against a Toyota Camry that now offers Apple CarPlay as well as a newly redesigned Hyundai Sonata that looks especially promising. Although Honda wouldn’t comment for this story, here’s how we’d like Honda to update the already solid Accord and, toward the bottom, what we think Honda will actually change for the 2020 model year.

Tone Down the Belt-Buckle Badge

If I bought an Accord, the first dealer-installed accessory I’d consider is a more subdued black chrome grille instead of the regular overchromed design. When we compared a base-engine Accord and Camry, we found neither front end stylish, and described the former as having a “brash, massive belt-buckle Honda badge [leaving] no question of its provenance.”

Looking even deeper into the crystal ball, we expect minor visual updates for the 2021 Honda Accord, along with a few other changes as part of a mid-cycle refresh.

The 2018 Accord knocked out the 2018 Camry in two comparison tests, but we still noticed more road and tire noise with the Honda than we would have liked, despite the current-gen model’s many quieting efforts including acoustic spray foam in the pillars and noise-absorbing carpet. Even though the Accord is already a refined package overall, we’d love to see Honda redouble its efforts to make the Accord quieter, but only if the required R&D won’t balloon the price.

Hold Me Tighter

Have you seen the Accord Sport? Like other midsize sedans with 19-inch wheels, it looks way flashier than some would expect from a sensible midsize sedan. And although we appreciate the Sport’s affordable curb appeal, two available engines, and even an optional manual transmission, thicker side bolstering on the seats would be a nice touch.

Get Smart

It’s tempting to ask automakers to include more features on lower trims, but as they say, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. Nevertheless, we bet 2020 Accord Sport buyers would appreciate having what Honda calls “Smart Entry,” or hands-free keyless access (unlock the doors as you enter and lock the doors as you leave without having to take the key out of your pocket).

Are you ready for a 2020 Accord Convertible?

No, neither are we—just checking to see if you’re still paying attention.

What Honda Will Probably Do for the 2020 Model Year

The truth is that the 2020 Honda Accord will probably look and feel quite a lot like the 2019 model. The Accord Sport trim might actually get hands-free keyless access, as we suggest above. Higher up the price scale, the 2020 Accord EX may get a four-way power front passenger’s seat (currently standard on the EX-L and Touring), and a new exterior color option or two is always a possibility.

WHAT ABOUT US?

If your midsize sedan search includes the Honda Accord, you’re doing it right. But starting and stopping the search there shortchanges an entire segment full of possibilities:

Toyota Camry: A loaded Toyota Camry XSE V-6 doesn’t drive better than a loaded Honda Accord 2.0T Touring, but feature-loving extroverts should appreciate the Camry’s available red leather seats, surround-view camera system, and dual-panel sunroof, all options the Accord doesn’t offer at any price.

Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima: Then there’s the 2019 Hyundai Sonata and 2019 Kia Optima, two middle-of-the-road performers that can satisfy those looking for a good deal before the completely redesigned versions of both arrive soon.

Mazda6 and Volkswagen Passat: The Mazda6 will speak to those who love surprisingly sexy and entertaining four-doors, and the spacious Passat gets redesigned sheetmetal for 2020.

Nissan Altima: Aside from being one of the only four-doors to be available in orange, the new Altima has a clean interior and does its best work as a base model. There, the midsizer offers a smart package of standard equipment that competes well with base Accords and Camrys, for buyers who value features as much as how a car performs.

Subaru Legacy: That leaves the Subaru Legacy, which offers standard all-wheel drive and an enormous Tesla/Volvo-like screen in its dash for 2020.
