Books I’ve Read:

My review....I bought this small hardcover totally on the strength of its lovely cover. The author is from Perth, Western Australia and it proved a surprising read. Not always a happy tale because life isn't always happy, but I enjoyed looking through a window into Carolyn's life. This diary, each entry is dated, reads more like a journal as there's more to it than just daily jottings. The author openly shares her thoughts and reservations. She talks of her success and failure in trying to raise a garden in Western Australian, and reveals a tangle of daily emotions as they tumble around in her head like clothes in a dryer. I slowly realised that something was wrong with her son, something not quite right. This story is a quiet one, very honest and all about her life, a much loved garden and her family. I was totally absorbed - 4 stars

Love and Kisses from My Padded Cell my rating: 3.5/5 stars

My review:

This book tells the story of 10 interviewed men and women who have lived with addiction. I was surprised at how many forms of addiction are recognized as such, and this book opened my eyes to struggles I had not previously perceived as 'severe' enough to be named addiction, or debilitating enough to be called traumatic. The author manages to relay certain horrors very pragmatically and realistically, lending these stories a very sobering air.  Despite the gravity of the subject matter, this book reads very easily and is both informative and compelling.

My Review....This book kept popping up in magazine book reviews, everyone having great things to say about it, so I went with it and got myself a copy. I must admit, though I knew nothing of Anh Do before I began reading, he's one very likeable guy. I marvelled at the luck his family had in surviving their perilous boat trip from Vietnam, I enjoyed reading how they quickly turned their lives around by hard work and positive attitudes, suffering many knock backs but thankfully not much in the way of overt racism. Large families all have their problems but with buckets of optimism this family made a new home, found new friends and made it a rule, to always help others less fortunate than themselves. The writing style is friendly and flows from one thought to the next easily, like any good conversation - 4 stars
