I arrived at parenthood with a lot of reluctance- only because I wasn't sure I would do justice in that role. If I had read both these memoirs before the doubts became a certainty, I would have worried far less. Walls has written about her (& her siblings') childhood though rich in experiences but lacking in care, about brilliant parents who were more inclined to spin stories, drink and live with their heads above the clouds than provide the basics- food, clothing, shelter- to their kids. It was infuriating to see the Walls' kids have popcorn for dinner (sometimes the only meal they would get in the day if they did.) Or pee in a bucket because they couldn't afford a home with a washroom. And yet, these kids managed to make something of themselves. They got themselves an education and broke out of the circle of poverty. By the time Walls was living it up at her ranch, her parents had called it quits on their nomadic life and were living out of dumpsters in New York. What endeared the writer to me was that she tried convincing her parents to live with her at various points, but they refused. Eventually, when she built a cabin on her ranch, where they were more comfortable living how they wanted to. 'The Glass Castle' is an important memoir, though it lacks the seemingly effortless bonhomie of 'The Liars Club'. They both are sad, appalling, sometimes even unbelievable. Both are also proof of how resilient the human spirit is. I liked 'The Liar's Club' better, which isn't to say that this memoir is any less. It's just that if you have read one, the other seems paler. 'The Glass Castle' speaks of a damn tough life with a slight shrug of shoulders and an apologetic peep of the dirt under the carpet. 'The Liar's Club' is a celebration of that life, with a smoking gun, a wink, and a shot of tequila to accompany it. #theglasscastle #jeanettewalls #memoirs #recommededreading (at Delhi, India) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ce5uXywrbuh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Glass Castle Book Review
Tumblr media
The first time I read the Glass Castle was in 2017. The book has published for more than 15 years yet I find its content still both prevalent and pertinent to our society nowadays.
I’ve come to love all of the Walls kids from Jeannette, Lori, Brian, to Maureen (even though she wasn’t described in detailed) due to their resilient, sanguine, and incredibly strong personality towards any obstacles in life while dealing with two dysfunctional parents. However, I couldn’t flatly repudiate the assertion of the parents that have made them become incredible grown-ups like they’re now. Each of them love their parents, no doubt. But they never let themselves mesmerize in their love and blindly accept the scarcity of love from both of their parents. They love them but they’re self-aware. They know all of their mom’s and dad’s vows are fragile just like the promise of building a glass castle for them.
The glass castle could appear glamorous and adorned on the outside yet in the side it’s nothing but a hollow void of love and transparently shown by the glass. It’s similar to the case of Rex Wall because he never becomes pragmatic even though he has enough capabilities to take care of his family. He couldn’t stay committed to his jobs, quit his drinking habits. Same with Rose Marry, she loves Rex Wall enough to live in that pseudo optimistic dream with him and his nomadic life style. She loves him enough to embrace his weakness, to become his partner, and most importantly to never leave him alone. Yet it’s also the tragedy of the family. Because Rose Marry could condone any Rex’s neglect towards the family; she also has lied to herself manifold times that this is life that they have designed for their kids so they could grow to become stronger, more independent like those Joshua trees she always painted.
Her kids are not illusory like her. They indeed grow stronger based on their parents’s neglect and yearn to escape from poverty. Consciousness. What they have is consciousness. They realize that this peripatetic life style is not what they aspire to live. Each of the Wall kids also made their own goal, their own version of the Glass Castle: New York City. The hustling and glamorous city that never ceases lighting. They also wish that one day they could arrive to that promising land and fulfill the Glass Castle like their dads, but the only difference is that they did achieve their dreams, their dads didn’t.
The goal was accomplished by the unanimous bond from the elder sibling to the younger sibling. Lori was the first one to leave, then Brian, then Jeannette and finally Maureen.
The beauty in struggle. This is indeed the beauty in struggle that I wish Rex and Rose Marry could see instead of chasing behind their delusional ideals.
I love the book for its incomplete (in my opinion) ending. I still think it’s a happy and bright ending but that doesn’t mean it has to perfect from the beginning until the end. A little bit of incomplete is what makes the story even more memorable and indelible in the mind of readers
