Décidemment, le marché de l’automobile aura beaucoup changé depuis que je m’y intéresse. Lorsque je suis né, le type de véhicule le plus vendu était une grande Américaine à deux portes. Les voitures à quatre portes et les familiales (station wagon) étaient destinées aux petites familles et conduites par des «papas» tranquilles et très sérieux. Les coupés et cabriolets répondaient plus aux attentes des gens recherchant une sorte de côté «sportif» à leur bagnole. À cette époque, et jusqu’au début des années 2000, NASCAR n’acceptait que des voitures américaines à deux portes dans ses compétitions. Et jusqu’au milieu des années soixante, General Motors régnait sur le monde avec environ 50% des ventes de voitures privées.
Vers la fin des années quatre-vingt-dix et début deux mille, c’est la berline à quatre portes qui s’est mise à dominer le marché automobile et ce, tant en Amérique qu’en Europe et en Asie (ce dernier étant un nouveau marché mondial). On se souviendra alors que sur notre continent, l’ancienne «lutte» Chevrolet vs Ford avait cédé sa place à ce duel Ford Taurus vs Honda Accord puis Toyota Camry vs…les autres.

L’Arteon nous est arrivée en 2019 et dès son apparition, la plupart des journalistes et chroniqueurs l’ont encensée. Mais le public n’y a pas répondu. À peine plus de 450 acheteurs se sont présentés chez les concessionnaires canadiens de VW dès la première année alors qu’environ 280 ont répété cette approche l’année suivante. Pensant bien faire pour raviver l’intérêt envers la marque, le constructeur allemand a décidé de réviser la finition extérieure et intérieure de l’Arteon pour 2021. Mais la réponse ne fut guère plus encourageante. «That’s it», la faction canadienne de Volkswagen a décidé tout récemment de ne plus continuer l’aventure. La version 2021 de l’Arteon sera la dernière de cette belle marque allemande. Et j’aurai au moins eu l’opportunité de la conduire pendant une semaine complète. Avec un drôle de «feeling»…
L’Arteon de 2021 a beau ressembler de près à son modèle prédécesseur, elle demeure impressionnante. La dernière livrée d’Arteon se distingue d’abord par un avant redessiné avec une calandre différente incluant le sigle redessiné de la marque et des boucliers avant et arrière différents. Mais c’est surtout à l’intérieur que la plus imposante berline de VW aura subi d’importants changements.

En effet, le tableau de bord de cette spacieuse berline a été redessiné et il incorpore désormais des accessoires plus modernes d’infodivertissement. Le «nouveau» tableau de bord a perdu son horloge traditionnelle mais il acquiert un écran plus imposant au centre de la console supérieure. L’instrumentation a été «modernisée» alors qu’un nouveau centre d’information plus complet a été inséré entre les deux «cadrans» informatisée face au conducteur. Plus évident encore, le nouveau volant de la voiture affiche le nouveau sigle VW dont il a été question plus haut et toute une panoplie de commandes (certaines étant redondantes) avancées.

Le reste de l’intérieur a été remis à jour et sa finition est tout simplement bien exécutée. Toutefois, elle n’est pas aussi impressionnante que celle de certaines cousines comme l’Audi, par exemple. Qu’importe, à mes yeux, il m’a semblé tout simplement élégant. Les sièges avant (ajustables et chauffant ou ventilés) sont plus confortables que jamais alors que les places arrière sont généreuses (et chauffantes) et confortables.

La grande surprise demeure le très vaste coffre que l’on atteint par un grand hayon arrière avec ouverture automatique. Curieusement, le marché des États-Unis n’est pas très friand des voitures à hayon ce qui n’a pas aidé à la popularité de l’Arteon. Ajoutez à cela la possibilité d’abaisser le dossier des sièges d’arrière et l’on obtient alors une auto incroyablement spacieuse pour déplacer des objets encombrants. Malheureusement, notre nouveau marché lui préférera des VUS même si certains d’entre eux offrent moins d’espace de chargement!

Mécaniquement, il n’y a pas de changements entre la première et la deuxième (et dernière) version de l’Arteon R Line. Un seul moteur lui est disponible, un quatre cylindres turbocompressé de 2,0 litres qui fait 268 chevaux et 258 li-pi de couple combiné à une boîte automatique à huit rapports (manipulable manuellement) et la traction intégrale 4Motion (la seule version disponible au Canada). La voiture est chaussée d’usine de pneus Continental 245/35 R20. La suspension est équipée d’amortisseurs qui s’adaptent automatiquement au style de conduite du conducteur alors que la direction est aussi précise que l’on peut s’attendre d’un produit Volkswagen.
Sur la route
C’est la deuxième fois que je conduis une berline Arteon (et fort possiblement la dernière fois!). Toutefois, plus rien ne me surprend. L’Arteon n’est pas une sportive au sens propre du mot mais elle affiche un comportement routier des plus agréables et surtout des plus rassurants. Le quatre cylindres qui l’anime n’est pas de haute performance mais il permet au conducteur de passer du point mort à 100 km/h en moins de sept secondes, ce qui n’est pas à dédaigner pour une auto de ce gabarit (près de 4000 livres, quand même!). La boîte automatique réagit avec douceur mais précision. Et la suspension est ferme sans être rigide. Cependant, il ne faut penser que l’Arteon est une GTI ! Sur route sinueuse, elle se démarquera de la plupart de ses rivales mais elle ne rejoindra pas les prouesses de la GTI! Toutefois, est-ce cela ce qu’un conducteur d’Arteon recherchera? Je ne crois pas. L’auto est une grand-routière avec un comportement remarquable et une consommation raisonnable (quoique 9,9 l./100 km selon mes calculs à la pompe ou 9,6 au compteur du tableau de bord ne soient pas spectaculaires face à la concurrence…). C’est une véritable berline très confortable qui devrait se mesurer favorablement à plusieurs de ses concurrentes (dont sa cousine Audi A5 Sportsback).
Vu qu’il n’y a qu’un seul modèle d’Arteon au Canada, il n’y a qu’un seul prix, soit 52 995 $ plus les 1765 $ de frais de transport et préparation et, bien entendu, la fameuse taxe d’accise fédérale de 100 $ pour la climatisation. Il faut aussi leur ajouter les taxes de vente fédérales et provinciales!
Si vous me demandiez quelle berline je choisirais entre les Toyota Avalon, Audi A5, Nissan Maxima, Honda Accord ou Chrysler 300 et la VW Arteon, il y aurait de fortes chances que j’opte pour cette dernière, ne serait-ce que par le plaisir de conduite que la VW procure. Malheureusement…le marché n’en veut pas ainsi. Alors si c’est cette VW que vous voulez, dépêchez-vous de visiter votre concessionnaire VW. L’Arteon, aussi intéressante soit-elle, ne sera pas de retour au Canada en 2022!

Nissan ne nous promet pas le nouveau VUS Inifiniti QX60 avant l’automne prochain mais au moins, le constructeur d’origine japonaise en avait un exemplaire à nous montrer la semaine dernière à Montréal.
En effet, suite à sa présentation officielle, un exemplaire anticipé du plus important véhicule de la division de luxe de Nissan était exposé dans un restaurant du Vieux Montréal pour le bénéfice de quelques journalistes locaux dont l’auteur de ces lignes.
Sans être spectaculaire, la ligne du nouveau QX60 est une réussite évidente. Affichant des coups de crayon plus osés, ce QX60 devrait aider Infiniti à reprendre le dessus, la marque ayant subi une incroyable baisse des ventes de 35% autour du monde (selon Automotive News) suite à la pandémie. L’intérieur a aussi été revu adoptant une approche plus moderne avec un tableau de bord mieux conçu pour recevoir un système d’infodivertissement plus élaboré.
Le seul moteur disponible demeurera le V6 de 3,5 litres qui fait 295 chevaux. Il viendra combiné à une boîte automatique à neuf rapports et à la traction intégrale. Vous aurez compris que le QX60 sera l’interprétation Infiniti du Nissan Pathfinder (deux véhicules qui n’ont pas été commercialisés comme tel en tant que modèles 2021) alors que les deux VUS nous arriveront vers la fin de l’année.
Le prix annoncé lors du dévoilement est de 54 995 $ pour la version de base alors que la version luxueuse Autograph débutera à 67 995 $ avec une surcharge de 750 $ pour une peinture métallisée ou 1000 $ pour une peinture à deux teintes.
Je ne vous en dis pas plus, je veux me garder de la «substance» pour mon article suivant l’essai de ce véhicule plus tard dans l’année.

La Jeep Compass 2022
C’est au Salon de l’auto de Chicago que Stellantis a décidé de dévoiler la version américaine de son VUS compact Compass redessiné pour 2022. Un peu comme il l’avait fait il y a quelques années avec la génération précédente, le constructeur a repris le look de la populaire Grand Cherokee pour son populaire petit véhicule. Toutefois, cette fois-ci, c’est encore plus évident!
L’intérieur a également été revu avec un nouveau tableau de bord qui est technologiquement plus élaboré que dans le passé. Sous le capot, Jeep y a conservé le quatre cylindres de 177 chevaux et 172 li-pi de couple (un peu moins que le même moteur de 2021) mais avec une boîte automatique à neuf rapports et la traction intégrale (il existe une version de base avec traction avant mais avec une boîte auto à six rapports!).
Le prix de base de la Compass (T.A.) à venir à l’automne prochain sera de 28 695 $ alors que la version Limited (T. I.) la plus poussée débutera à 39 095 $.

2021 BMW 430i Convertible review: Ready for summer

So long as the 4 Series' nose isn't bedecked with chrome, it's actually not that bad. And trust me, it's even less obvious in person. Andrew Krok/Roadshow Sometimes, base models exist almost as filler, meant to whet appetites on the path to better-equipped (and, for the automaker, higher-margin) variants. But not the 2021 BMW 430i Convertible. Despite being the low rung on the ladder, this four-seat drop-top is a fully fleshed-out summer machine that's mighty rewarding on both road trips and unnecessarily quick blasts down twisty forest roads. A looker, up and downLet's just get this out of the way early so we can move on: Yes, it has a weird grille, and no, it's not everybody's cup of tea. This is my third tester with such a schnoz, and I've grown used to it. It's a lot more palatable in person than in pictures. Don't like it? Cool, there are other convertibles on sale. On we go.Nose aside, I think BMW did a great job shaping the 430i Convertible. The soft top looks pretty close to the coupe's fixed roof when it's up, so it's still a sharp little thing, even in the rain. Once it's nice out, hold down the button on the center console, let the automatic folding bits do their thing, and the result is quite the shapely silhouette. The $3,800 M Sport Package zhushes up the looks with different 18-inch alloy wheels, dark exterior trim and a more aggressive bumper, but there's still plenty to like without needing to shell out this added dough. The interior doesn't need much in the way of frippery, either. Sure, the red leather is a $1,450 option, and you get a different steering wheel with the M Sport Package, but it looks fabulous and is not at all necessary to feel like a million bucks. I'm a little bored with the dashboard design, which is pretty much the same across BMW's entire lineup, but it's still mighty functional and everything is laid out sensibly. The back seat is a little tight for full-size adults, but it'll work for trips around town, even with the top up. There's even a solid amount of junk storage in here, with sufficiently deep door pockets, but I still don't like how the wireless charger ($500) access requires you to remove whatever's in the cup holders.Flip open the trunk and you'll find enough storage for a couple weekender bags and backpacks, even with the top stowed. A thick black barrier makes sure you don't overfill the trunk and cause issues, and yes, a golf bag should still fit just fine back there. Solid driver in any conditionEverybody loves to heap praise on BMW's more powerful models, but there's plenty of spiciness hidden inside the 430i Convertible. The 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 under the hood produces 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque, sent to the rear wheels (AWD is available) via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The four-pot produces that twist nice and low in the rev range, making it quite the potent stoplight shuffler, and the engine sounds pretty good with the top down, to boot. But it's also content to chill and stay in a more efficient position for long slogs on the highway. Thanks to some well-thought-out vehicle modes, you really can have your cake in the 430i Convertible and eat it, too. In its default Comfort mode, the transmission errs on the efficient side, while the steering and suspension aim for softness, provided you pay for the right addons (the $3,800 M Sport Package and the $2,450 Dynamic Handling Package, respectively). With all those bits mixed together in my tester, the ride is compliant and comfortable across all manner of roads, making for some easy-breezy top-down fun.Rear passengers don't have it too bad, but since the front has more room and heaters for their necks, expect a little jealousy from the back row. Andrew Krok/Roadshow Throw the 430i Convertible's mode switch into Sport and the car feels surprisingly different. The powertrain perks up and the transmission keeps itself in the right gear at the right time, connecting tree-lined Michigan switchbacks with oodles of torque. Body roll damn near disappears entirely, and the steering firms up to a nearly comical heft. The result is something that feels just as fun as sprightlier BMW variants without the commensurate cash hemorrhage. Sure, you can glom on more power if you want to, but by no means should you feel a need to. The 430i is very much a blast in its own right. But it's also pretty damn efficient, with the RWD 430i being more than capable of meeting the EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.Let's talk convertible-specific stuff. The top itself is a breeze to operate, working at up to 31 mph in case I get caught in a flash drizzle, although having the top switch right next to the parking brake switch seems like a recipe for a no-look disaster. With the top up, sound isolation is pretty solid, and obviously it's just a cacophony of wind when the top is dropped at higher speeds. Taking the 430i Convertible on a brief trip from Detroit to Chicago and back, rolling up the windows keeps my hat on my head and the breeze mostly at bay. The $500 neck warmer upgrade is a must-have, as it keeps the parts of me warm that the seat and steering wheel heaters cannot.Tech aplenty, if you pay for itThe standard tech in the 2021 BMW 430i Convertible is pretty good, but odds are that you'll want to pay at least a bit more money for some of the upgraded stuff. Every 430i comes with an analog gauge cluster and an 8.8-inch touchscreen running BMW's iDrive infotainment software, but the $2,300 Premium Package upgrades that to a 12.3-inch gauge display and a 10.3-inch dash screen. iDrive is the same as usual, offering up plenty of information with density that's not overwhelming, but it does take some time to get used to swapping between various corners of the software. If you don't like using touchscreens, there's a dial on the center console. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are blissfully standard.There is a surprising amount of standard safety in the 430i Convertible, too. Every one that rolls off the dealership floor comes with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors. My tester's $700 Parking Assistance Package adds automatic parking assist, as well as a surround-view camera. The only notable omission is adaptive cruise control, which at the time of this writing is only available on M440i variants, skipping the 430i and 430i xDrive entirely. That's dumb. Really dumb.iDrive takes a little while to get used to, but once you have it down, it's easy to use with minimal distraction. Andrew Krok/Roadshow Down to brass tacksWhile I mentioned a number of options and packages through the course of my review, I wouldn't call any of them truly necessary. The 2021 BMW 430i Convertible's starting price of $54,095 (including $995 for destination) isn't too shabby, but going heavy on the options can send the window sticker north of my tester's already lofty $67,220 price tag. Throw in a couple good ones like the M Sport Package and the Premium Package and you can walk away with a damned solid and efficient sporty convertible for under $60,000.With updates pending for its two largest competitors, the Audi A5 Cabriolet and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet, the Bimmer is the freshest compact drop-top on the block at the moment. Throw in a great blend of driving dynamics and comfortable cruising, and you've got quite the compelling package just in time for summer.
