2021 BMW 430i Convertible review: Ready for summer

So long as the 4 Series' nose isn't bedecked with chrome, it's actually not that bad. And trust me, it's even less obvious in person. Andrew Krok/Roadshow Sometimes, base models exist almost as filler, meant to whet appetites on the path to better-equipped (and, for the automaker, higher-margin) variants. But not the 2021 BMW 430i Convertible. Despite being the low rung on the ladder, this four-seat drop-top is a fully fleshed-out summer machine that's mighty rewarding on both road trips and unnecessarily quick blasts down twisty forest roads. A looker, up and downLet's just get this out of the way early so we can move on: Yes, it has a weird grille, and no, it's not everybody's cup of tea. This is my third tester with such a schnoz, and I've grown used to it. It's a lot more palatable in person than in pictures. Don't like it? Cool, there are other convertibles on sale. On we go.Nose aside, I think BMW did a great job shaping the 430i Convertible. The soft top looks pretty close to the coupe's fixed roof when it's up, so it's still a sharp little thing, even in the rain. Once it's nice out, hold down the button on the center console, let the automatic folding bits do their thing, and the result is quite the shapely silhouette. The $3,800 M Sport Package zhushes up the looks with different 18-inch alloy wheels, dark exterior trim and a more aggressive bumper, but there's still plenty to like without needing to shell out this added dough. The interior doesn't need much in the way of frippery, either. Sure, the red leather is a $1,450 option, and you get a different steering wheel with the M Sport Package, but it looks fabulous and is not at all necessary to feel like a million bucks. I'm a little bored with the dashboard design, which is pretty much the same across BMW's entire lineup, but it's still mighty functional and everything is laid out sensibly. The back seat is a little tight for full-size adults, but it'll work for trips around town, even with the top up. There's even a solid amount of junk storage in here, with sufficiently deep door pockets, but I still don't like how the wireless charger ($500) access requires you to remove whatever's in the cup holders.Flip open the trunk and you'll find enough storage for a couple weekender bags and backpacks, even with the top stowed. A thick black barrier makes sure you don't overfill the trunk and cause issues, and yes, a golf bag should still fit just fine back there. Solid driver in any conditionEverybody loves to heap praise on BMW's more powerful models, but there's plenty of spiciness hidden inside the 430i Convertible. The 2.0-liter turbocharged I4 under the hood produces 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque, sent to the rear wheels (AWD is available) via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The four-pot produces that twist nice and low in the rev range, making it quite the potent stoplight shuffler, and the engine sounds pretty good with the top down, to boot. But it's also content to chill and stay in a more efficient position for long slogs on the highway. Thanks to some well-thought-out vehicle modes, you really can have your cake in the 430i Convertible and eat it, too. In its default Comfort mode, the transmission errs on the efficient side, while the steering and suspension aim for softness, provided you pay for the right addons (the $3,800 M Sport Package and the $2,450 Dynamic Handling Package, respectively). With all those bits mixed together in my tester, the ride is compliant and comfortable across all manner of roads, making for some easy-breezy top-down fun.Rear passengers don't have it too bad, but since the front has more room and heaters for their necks, expect a little jealousy from the back row. Andrew Krok/Roadshow Throw the 430i Convertible's mode switch into Sport and the car feels surprisingly different. The powertrain perks up and the transmission keeps itself in the right gear at the right time, connecting tree-lined Michigan switchbacks with oodles of torque. Body roll damn near disappears entirely, and the steering firms up to a nearly comical heft. The result is something that feels just as fun as sprightlier BMW variants without the commensurate cash hemorrhage. Sure, you can glom on more power if you want to, but by no means should you feel a need to. The 430i is very much a blast in its own right. But it's also pretty damn efficient, with the RWD 430i being more than capable of meeting the EPA-estimated fuel economy of 24 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.Let's talk convertible-specific stuff. The top itself is a breeze to operate, working at up to 31 mph in case I get caught in a flash drizzle, although having the top switch right next to the parking brake switch seems like a recipe for a no-look disaster. With the top up, sound isolation is pretty solid, and obviously it's just a cacophony of wind when the top is dropped at higher speeds. Taking the 430i Convertible on a brief trip from Detroit to Chicago and back, rolling up the windows keeps my hat on my head and the breeze mostly at bay. The $500 neck warmer upgrade is a must-have, as it keeps the parts of me warm that the seat and steering wheel heaters cannot.Tech aplenty, if you pay for itThe standard tech in the 2021 BMW 430i Convertible is pretty good, but odds are that you'll want to pay at least a bit more money for some of the upgraded stuff. Every 430i comes with an analog gauge cluster and an 8.8-inch touchscreen running BMW's iDrive infotainment software, but the $2,300 Premium Package upgrades that to a 12.3-inch gauge display and a 10.3-inch dash screen. iDrive is the same as usual, offering up plenty of information with density that's not overwhelming, but it does take some time to get used to swapping between various corners of the software. If you don't like using touchscreens, there's a dial on the center console. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are blissfully standard.There is a surprising amount of standard safety in the 430i Convertible, too. Every one that rolls off the dealership floor comes with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors. My tester's $700 Parking Assistance Package adds automatic parking assist, as well as a surround-view camera. The only notable omission is adaptive cruise control, which at the time of this writing is only available on M440i variants, skipping the 430i and 430i xDrive entirely. That's dumb. Really dumb.iDrive takes a little while to get used to, but once you have it down, it's easy to use with minimal distraction. The 2021 BMW 430i Convertible's starting price of $54,095 (including $995 for destination) isn't too shabby, but going heavy on the options can send the window sticker north of my tester's already lofty $67,220 price tag. Throw in a couple good ones like the M Sport Package and the Premium Package and you can walk away with a damned solid and efficient sporty convertible for under $60,000.With updates pending for its two largest competitors, the Audi A5 Cabriolet and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet, the Bimmer is the freshest compact drop-top on the block at the moment. What's New for 2021? Everything. The 4-series finally catches up to the 3-series for 2021 with a clean-sheet redesign and bolder exterior styling. The 2021 4-series is scheduled to go on sale in October. Pricing and Which One to Buy 430i coupe: $46,595 430i convertible: $55,000 (est) M440i coupe: $59,495 M440i convertible: $65,000 (est) We haven't driven the new 4-series yet, but in our experience with the four-door 3-series models, the turbocharged inline-six in the M440i model will be the enthusiast's choice, but the nearly $13,000 price premium may turn off some buyers. That bump in price comes with a load of additional equipment though, in case you need more reason to justify the cost. The M440i comes standard with all-wheel drive, for one thing, and it's also outfitted with unique M Sport 18-inch wheels with run-flat tires, the M Sport suspension and rear differential, a rear spoiler, a faux-leather wrapped dashboard, and more. A convertible model is undoubtedly on its way, but for now BMW has only released pricing and feature content information for the hardtop coupe. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The same two overachieving engines offered in the 3-series will be available in the 4-series. Models designated 430i will be powered by a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. An all-wheel drive example of the 330i sedan managed a brisk 5.2-second zero-to-60-mph time at our test track; we expect similarly peppy performance from the 430i. The M440i is powered by a silky-smooth turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that gains an assist from a 48-volt hybrid system to make 382-hp—good for a 3.8-second zero-to-60-mph time in the M340i. Our short drive of prototype 4-series models in Munich revealed a very sporty driving experience, courtesy of retuned suspension, a more-aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track, and a lower center of gravity. We're looking forward to track-testing the 4-series after it's officially unveiled to see how it stacks up against its main rivals, the Audi A5 and S5, the Mercedes C-class coupe, and the Infiniti Q60. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The EPA hasn't released fuel economy estimates for the 2021 4-series lineup yet, but it should offer similar ratings as the 3-series. We expect highway fuel economy somewhere in the mid-30-mpg range for the 430i and high 20s for the six-cylinder M440i. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo Shoppers may not notice much difference between the cabins of the 4-series and the 3-series unless they're in the back seat. The dashboard layout, interior materials, and primary controls look to be identical to the four-door 3-series', although we noticed that the lower roofline in the 4-series gives it a less spacious feel. Trunk space is less generous here than in the 3-series, especially in the convertible model, which will likely give up some of its cargo room to provide stowage space for its power-folding fabric roof. Infotainment and Connectivity The 2021 4-series comes with the same standard 8.8-inch and optional 10.3-inch infotainment screens as the 3-series sedan. Both displays run the latest version of BMW's iDrive 7 infotainment software, which pairs an intuitive interface with a console-mounted clickwheel controller for easy use while driving; those who prefer to interact with the display directly can do since both are touchscreens. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and in-dash navigation will all be standard while a 12.3-inch digital gauge display, onboard Wi-Fi, and a wireless smartphone charging pad will all be optional extras. Safety and Driver-Assistance Features It being brand new, the 2021 4-series hasn't been crash tested by either the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). BMW offers a host of driver-assistance features to as standard with more advanced features available as options. Key safety features include: Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist Available adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode Warranty and Maintenance Coverage Compared to rivals such as the Cadillac CT5 or the Genesis G70 the BMW 4-series' standard warranty offerings are fairly basic. BMW makes up for that with a three-year complimentary maintenance plan, whereas the Caddy only offers but one free visit. 2021 BMW 4 Series revealed with mild-hybrid power and, uh, that face

Yes, that face. BMW From its turbocharged powertrains to its robust cabin tech to its advanced driver-assistance systems, there are a lot of reasons to like the 2021 4 Series, which BMW officially revealed Tuesday. But the one thing everyone's going to get hung up on is the styling -- specifically, that enormous grille.

Follow your nose

Yes, the 2021 BMW 4 Series has the enlarged kidneys first seen on the Concept 4 showcar from the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, as well as the all-electric i4. It's definitely... a look. And it's one we don't like, at least in photos. BMW says the grille "is framed by surfaces with a three-dimensional mesh structure," so there's at least some interesting detail, though it kind of loses any luster it might've had by bolting the European front plate in the middle. (It's going to look awful in US press fleet spec, with a bright yellow New Jersey plate smack dab in the middle.)The 2021 4 Series will be offered in 430i, 430i xDrive and M440i xDrive models, the latter of which gets darker exterior trim and larger side air intakes on the front fascia. LED headlights are standard across all models, and the shape just doesn't work with those giant buck teeth in the middle. Compared to an equivalent 3 Series sedan, the new 4 Series is 2.2 inches longer, 1 inch wider and 2.2 inches lower. But it rides on the same 112.2-inch wheelbase. See how it stacks up to its rivals in our spec comparison.Luckily, the rest of the 4 Series looks pretty darn good, with a tapering roofline similar to that of the larger 8 Series coupe. All 4 Series coupes come standard with 18-inch wheels, though a variety of 19-inch options are available, as are M Sport brakes with either blue or red calipers, an aero kit and a rear lip spoiler. The LED taillights have an interesting light signature not unlike that of the recently revealed 2021 Acura TLX, and honestly, we think the new 4 Series looks best from the rear three-quarter view.

The cabin is largely the same as what you'll find in the 3 Series sedan -- the 4 Series' four-door sibling -- with leather surfaces available in a range of colors, flush-mounted controls on the center console and several different wood and metal inlay options. Being a two-door coupe, the rear seats aren't super spacious, but they can at least be folded flat to accommodate longer items from the 12-cubic-foot trunk.The 4 Series comes standard with analog gauges and a 5.1-inch color display in the instrument cluster, as well as an 8.8-inch center touchscreen for the iDrive 7 infotainment suite. Opt for the Live Cockpit Professional package and you upgrade to a 12.3-inch fully digital gauge display, like the one offered in BMW's other models, as well as a 10.2-inch central multimedia screen. Standard equipment includes lane-departure warning, frontal collision warning, pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high-beam headlights and speed limit information. You can add the company's Driving Assistance Professional Package, which gets you full-speed adaptive cruise control as well as Extended Traffic Jam Assist, a Level 2 driver-assistance feature that adds lane-keeping assistance to make highway commutes easier.A particularly cool tech upgrade is the optional Parking Assistance Package, which not only includes a 3D surround camera, but has a back-up assistant that actually memorizes the last 150 feet of your journey at speeds below 20 mph, and can automatically trace the same path in reverse. For the 4 Series, this package adds BMW's new drive recorder, which can automatically capture 20 seconds of video around the moment of an impact and save it to the car's hard drive. Your insurance claims adjuster will love it.

The 2021 4 Series will go on sale globally in October, and it'll be priced from $46,595 in the US, including $995 for destination. The 430i xDrive will come in at $48,595 and the M440i xDrive will cost $59,495. This represents a $650 increase over the 2020 430i and 430i xDrive coupes, while the 2021 M440i is a full $5,150 more expensive than the 2020 440i. Which Cars and Trucks Have SiriusXM with 360L?

The new platform is available on 2020 and 2021 model-year vehicles from the following manufacturers:

Audi is offering SiriusXM with 360L as standard equipment on the 2021 A6, A7, A8, Q7, and Q8. It will also be available on the 2021 A4, A5, Q3, Q5, and Allroad vehicles. Other Audis will receive the audio platform in future model years.

Most vehicles in the 2021 BMW lineup will feature SiriusXM with 360L. This includes the 2 Series Gran Coupe, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 8 Series, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, and Z4.

In the Buick lineup, look for the new feature on the Enclave and Encore from 2020. Cadillac rolled out SiriusXM with 360L on the 2020 XT4, XT5, and XT6. Chevrolet vehicles with the technology include the 2020 Blazer, Camaro, Silverado, Silverado HD, and Traverse. For GMC, eligible models include the 2020 Acadia, Sierra, and Sierra HD.

Ford announced that the 2021 F-150 will feature SiriusXM with 360L. Eventually, all Ford models with the next-generation Sync 4 infotainment system will receive the new tech.

Not to be outdone by Chevrolet, Ford, and GMC, Ram offers the feature on its light and heavy-duty pickup trucks.

Nissan and Infiniti said they will start offering SiriusXM with 360L. Timing remains unclear at this point, and it’s unknown exactly which vehicles will get the new tech.

Finally, Volkswagen has greenlit 360L for most of its 2021 lineup. Eligible models include the Arteon, Atlas Cross Sport, Golf GTI, Jetta, Jetta GLI, and Tiguan. The Atlas will add the feature midway through its 2021 model year.

How much is SiriusXM per month?

Automakers are currently offering free trials to SiriusXM All Access with the vehicle purchase, as they’ve long offered for SiriusXM’s satellite radio services. Some of these trials last for three months, and some are for a full year. If the customer decides to continue service after the trial period, current rates will apply. Right now, All Access is priced at $21.99 per month, or $263.88 per year. The more limited Select package costs $16.99 per month, or $203.88 per year—pricier than most internet- and app-based streaming services, such as Spotify and Pandora, though not by much.

Audi plots A3 liftback coupé to take on Mercedes CLA

The word from Audi’s Ingolstadt headquarters in Germany suggests that the new A3 model has been drafted into the line-up as a possible replacement for the TT, sales of which have plummeted in recent years as buyers have abandoned compact two-door models in search of more versatile offerings. However, this is denied by highly placed Audi sources in Ingolstadt, who suggest the future of the TT coupé and roadster remains open for the time being.

Further details about the new A3 model are scarce at this early stage, but insiders have told Autocar that the A3 liftback measures more than 4400mm in length. By comparison, the existing A5 Sportback is 4730mm long.

More affordable versions of the new Audi are set to run either a 1.4-litre petrol or 2.0-litre diesel engine in combination with a 48V electric system to provide them with mild-hybrid properties.

However, Autocar has been told that plans have already been drawn up for a more powerful 2.0-litre model in the form of the S3 liftback. Set to rival the Mercedes-AMG CLA35, the four-wheel-drive S3 liftback is expected to offer more than 300bhp.

The most powerful of Audi’s new five-door models will be an exciting RS3 liftback that’s planned for launch in 2021. Fitted with a revised version of the 2.5-litre five-cylinder petrol engine that powers existing RS3 models, with a particulate filter among the other changes, it will go up against the new Mercedes-AMG CLA45 wielding more than 400bhp.

In a move that’s intended to link the new liftback with the iconic short-wheelbase Sport Quattro launched in 1983, the RS3 liftback is claimed to receive a number of traditional styling touches, including air vents within the leading edge of the bonnet, flared wheel arches and a pronounced spoiler within the trailing edge of an angled liftback-style tailgate.

Together with the range-topping S3 and RS3 models, Audi is also planning to provide its upcoming liftback with a newly configured plug-in petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain, which will offer an electric-only range of up to 31 miles, as part of an extended range of new electrified A3 E-tron models.

Word on the Ingolstadt rumour mill also suggests that a pure-electric version of the new five-door liftback, based on the Volkswagen Group’s new MEB electric vehicle platform, could also appear as a future Audi rival to the Tesla Model 3.
