"But Palestinians elected Hamas!"

False. Let's take an analytical look at the reality of the situation and the statistics behind the most recent Palestinian election.

First of all, the most recent parliamentary (and legislative) election in Palestine took place in January of 2006, just over 18 years ago.

At that time, the estimated population of Palestine was about 3,761,904 (reported as of July 2005). Interestingly enough, at this time, just over half of the population of Palestine (52.3%) was under the age of 18. Those numbers alone suggest that Palestinians as a whole could not have voted for Hamas, since the majority of the population was underage.

But of course, there's even more to this story. Of the population that was eligible to vote, only 1,341,671 were registered to vote and only 1,042,424 votes were cast. Of the cast votes, only 990,873 were labeled as "valid" votes. That comes out to approximately 26.3% of the population of Palestine in 2006 having cast valid votes.

However, the plot thickens even further. In 2006, Hamas was under a party called "Change and Reform", which won the election by a slim margin with a majority of 440,409 votes compared to the runner up with 410,554 votes. Doing the math, this means that in the most recent election in 2006, Hamas, under the Change and Reform party, won the election with a vote from approximately 11.7% of the total population of Palestine.

And if those numbers aren't already enough, let's compare that to the current population, seeing as the 2006 election was so long ago. Making the bold assumption that every single person who voted for Hamas in 2006 is still alive, and compared to the current Palestinian population of about 5.4 million people, that comes out to be approximately 8% of the current population having voted for Hamas.

Yes, you heard me right,

Only 8% of the current population of Palestine voted for Hamas

Now I know I hardly have any followers and the chances of this post getting any attention are slim to none, but these numbers are so important. When we talk about Hamas, October 7th, and the ongoing, centuries old Israeli-Palestinian conflict, we have to consider the analytical data behind all this. Those of us supporting Palestine have never said we're in support of Hamas, in fact many of us understand the detrimental impacts Hamas has had on the Palestinian political system.

All we're asking is for you to have even an ounce of compassion and understanding for the fact that tens of thousands of innocent civilians are being killed at the hands of the Israeli military. This is a genocide. Israel is an apartheid state. There's no debating that.

Before I see another messed up “I hope he suffered” type statement, allow me to clarify a few things about Paul Rubens.   First, when Paul Rubens was initially arrested he was masturbating in an adult movie theatre.   It’s just the fact that he was famous for hosting a popular childrens’  show that got unwanted attention.  The second big arrested for Paul Rubens had to do with some magazines he inherited from his father.  According to the police and Paul Rubens, himself, the magazines were antique but they did feature underage nude models.   And there are no tolerance laws for that so he had to register as a sex offender for about five years. Reflection on Renée Neblett Talk

Reflections on “Building Kokrobritey” 

Renée Neblett’s talk on her work and mission with the Kokrobritey Institute was deeply moving. As someone who is passionate about sustainability and its connection with the arts, I knew I had to take advantage of the opportunity to learn about eco-conscious art and design initiatives. I am a current fashion design student at MassArt, entering my final year. My approach to my studies has been hyper-focused on sustainable alternatives to the negative global impact of the fashion industry. I know that Ghana has been overwhelmingly impacted by imported second hand garments and textile waste, so I was curious to learn what the Kokrobitey Institute is doing to alleviate this issue. 

The talk was eye-opening. Ms. Neblett has built an innovative educational program that trains community members, amplifies their creativity, lifts up local traditions, cherishes ancestral knowledge, and prepares the next generation of Ghanaian creators and changemakers. Kokrobitey takes trash out of the streets and landfills and transforms it into furniture, clothing, jewelry, home decor, and more. Advertisement banners become satchels and pouches, glass bottles become earrings and construction supplements, denim jeans become tapestries and furniture upholstery, and much more. With a sewing studio, a glass kiln, a woodworking shop, a medicinal and nutritional garden, all in a self-constructed building, Kokrobitey is an innovative example of holistic environmental sustainability, such that we should all strive to achieve within our own communities. 

I was deeply inspired by this talk and the discussion afterwards. I look forward to learning much more about the Kokrobritey Institute and how I may someday be able to transform my vision for a cleaner, more just fashion industry into a broader positive movement to protect the environment and the culture that kept us near it.

The flight from PT to France is <2.5 hours so she easily could have flown in for a day. Netflix may not have been concerned with them meeting as far as Covid protocols are concerned // The problem with this though is that she was in Spain filming WN she was not in Portugal. And covid restrictions were very very tight on set. There is no way Netflix nor the directors or producers would risk covid getting on set and shutting down filming for both projects just for a fake relationship to be started. That is just too far fetched! First off that would cost them millions for delays. And secondly Netflix could’ve been sued for that if they allowed it and set people got sick and died. They did not meet that way.

I think even if she was not in Spain filming, she might have not been allowed to visit anywhere else because of the strict covid protocols. She herself might have fallen ill and could have been a cause of delaying production.

Kitchen Materials and Fit Out

$1,900 - $2,300 per square meter (ReignInDesign, 2021). If one of the Workshop buildings is transformed it would be approximately 25 square meters for the kitchen to be done. This would amount to a cost of anywhere from $47,500 to $57,500.

Fabrication (Electrical and Plumbing)

Electrician- $75-$110 per hour (In Brisbane) (Kulkarni, 2023).

Working an average of 9 hours a day (HiPages, 2023), for 4 days a week for 2 weeks this would cost $6696 for entire job on the high end.

Plumber- $100 - $150 per hour (in Australia) (Garwood, 2023).

The plumber would be needed less, maybe 2 days for 9 hours a day. This would mean the approximate cost would be $3600 for the entire job.

The kitchen can take anywhere from 2 - 4 weeks (Tuddenham, 2023)

Ongoing Costs

Staff (Instructors/Chefs)- According to a job listing for a 'Cooking School Instructor' Position at 'New Farm Confectionary', which is also in Brisbane, the cost for a cooking instructor is $29 to $44 an hour "depending on qualifications and experience" ( New Farm Confectionary, 2023). This cost would be covered by the fees charged to the people taking the classes.

Upkeep- The upkeep of the kitchen would be checking its condition once a week and providing cleaning products for patrons. This is feasible as it is both a social and commercial enterprise and this cost would be covered by the the weekly membership fees and cooking class payments.

Income

The intention of this creative concept is that it acts as both a social and commercial enterprise that brings in consistent revenue from the weekly fees as a community kitchen and the one off payments from people taking the cooking classes/paint and sips.

Community Kitchen - $5 a week per person

Cooking Classes - Based on the prices of other cooking classes in Brisbane on the ClassBento website the cooking classes will range from $100 - $150 per person.

Paint and Sips - $30 - $60 per person (ClassBento, 2023)
