I'm on Bunny Duty while kiddo's mom is away, and usually head over after I've had a few sips of coffee, feed/litter box bunny, and then run back home, where the rest of the morning pot awaits. So I'm not in the most astute frame of mind that early in the morning, especially with an insufficient amount of caffeine in me.

So this morning I head down to the truck, get in, and start her up, and do my little semi-rev to clear the carburetor and get her at idling speed, and when I did that, there was an awful, low, grinding growl, as if the crankshaft was breaking, or my immediate thought that somebody had stolen my catalytic converter. Every time I revved the motor, it followed in time. It was so low it was vibrating the carport spaces we park in (under the apartments).

I got out, walked around the truck, opened the hood, listened, and then I realized that somebody in the next little carport divider had started and was revving their newish Camaro, Camry or whatever it was...some 4 door plastic thing that looks like an angry japanese anime character. It had loud exhaust (sounded like headers and low-low glass-packs) on a new 4-door car it just doesn't compute, yaknow?

Anyway, he backed out and left, and I just sat in Li'l Truck, kinda laugh-crying in relief and just sheer terror at "oh, no, my engine" when she sits and purrrrrrs like a kitten once loud boy is gone. Just quietly made my way over and took care of Bunny Bidniss.

Hi, What new tablet did you got?

XP Pen 22R whatever thingy. It’s remarkably high quality considering it was a fraction of the price of the equivalent Wacom device. It also came with two tablet pens and a drawing glove which is wild to me.

No one should ever buy a Wacom device ever again lol

Comic redraws!

trying out my new tablet with some IDW comic panel redraws. (This entire arc broke me. i kinda knew it was coming, but still!)

Anyways! new tablet? holy shit. idk how it does it. I feel like i was trying to draw with my elbow for the past several years and only just got the pen in my hand. Or like, i was cutting vegetables with a super dull knife and someone handed me a sharp one. it feels so much better than my Gaomon i had! theres less variation with my lines and i don't have to undo every other line. (don't even get me started on the screen size.) anyways, i'm in love with it. (XP-Pen artist 22R pro if anyone is curious.)

gushing over my new tablet aside, i have a lot of stuff planned to draw now that i have it. so look forward to that.

So you can listen to Air Traffic Controllers talk to pilots on youtube which is where the idea for Emily being an ATC came from. But I always forget how exasperated some of these people sound when directing pilots and I can just imagine it being Emily, frustrated, trying to keep her composure as she's trying to direct Optimus with his jetpack, Blitzwing, a regular plane full of regular passengers, and Omega Supreme on where and what order to land in, just a whole bunch of:

"Blitzwing, you're behind Delta 8172, Optimus I need you to land on 22R, and Delta 8172 you're clear to begin descent, you're going to gate--"

"Where am I going?"

"Omega Supreme, I am getting you, just give me a minute."

"I'm low on fuel."

"Blitzwing I get that, I hear you, wait your turn. Delta 8172 you're going to gate A16. Optimus confirm your landing when you're on the ground."

"Just touched down."

"Great, thank you for being reasonable and patient."

"I'm being patient."

Please allow me to introduce you to one of my favorite Renaissance manuscripts, BnF Hébreu 586. It's a Yiddish Sefer minhagim, or book of religious customs, created in Italy in the early 16th century. The book describes the customs and traditions associated with various Jewish holidays. Although such Yiddish-language books were not uncommon in the medieval and Renaissance periods, this one is unique for its illustrations, which were clearly done by an amateur artist and cover 94 of the manuscript's 120 folios. While many 19th and 20th century scholars were dismissive of the artwork, which they described as ugly or crude, I think they give the manuscript a lot of its charm.

Art historian Diane Wolfthal notes that, while many of the illustrations depict the actions described in the text, this is not always the case. Sometimes, as with the card game pictured above, the illustrations are not directly related to the text. It seems that the scribe/illustrator chose to focus on the most joyous and vibrant aspects of Jewish ritual. As Wolfthal writes, the illustrations "envision Jewish customs from the scribe’s viewpoint and construct an idyllic vision of Jewish society."

A Hebrew list of names and important dates at the back of the book suggests that it was probably privately owned and passed down through generations of a family. The scribe/illustrator may have been a member of the family and produced it for personal use.

Above is a selection of a few of my favorite illustrations which have clearly legible captions. These read, from top to bottom:

fol. 4r: "דיא געבן סדר" ["They are giving a seder."]

fol. 8r: "דיא לײאן אין דער ספר תורה" ["They are reading the Torah."]

fol. 22r: "דיא מכן הבדלה" ["They are making havdalah."]

fol. 73r: "דער אישט אין דער סוכה" ["He is in the sukkah."]

There are so many more interesting illustrations in this book that I could not include, so I highly recommend flipping through it yourself!
