heard utopia, bjork she’s talked about this record being a continuation or flipside of vulnicura, and it shows. the albums share a sonic world, made of rumbling, pulverizing bass and an airy high end accented with orchestral flourishes, as well as a taste for sprawling song structures. but while vulnicura is about being wounded, its compact tracklist and direct lyricism speaking closely to that experience, utopia is about healing, which requires community, thought, and work. it therefore has a broader scope, both in length (it’s 72 minutes, her longest album yet) and in the conceptual ground it covers, with discussions of patriarchy (’body memory,’ ‘tabula rasa’) and the broader state of the world. her personal tragedy and healing become a microcosm for larger dissections of what ails civilization (’losss’) and how to recover (’future forever’). this - plus her choice to mix her voice low, like whispers placed against the strong bass and melodic flute motifs (’arisen my senses,’ ‘saint’) - makes it feel more remote despite its resplendent sound, like walking through themed rooms or beneath monumental sculptures. i like this quality. it feels like an album constructed with purpose. arcadia, ramona lisa i love chairlift, obviously, and caroline polachek’s budding solo career is one of the musical developments i’m most anticipating over the next couple of years. but it won’t be her first solo outing - that’s this album, released as ramona lisa in 2015. the record has an interesting tension between outward, poppy writing and ambient, electronic production that goes more internal and experimental than chairlift did (’backwards and upwards’). these two impulses are split apart and put back together - some tracks are fully ambient (’hissing pipes at dawn’) while some are fully-realized pop songs (’dominic’). these two poles are tied together by threads of analog synthesizer, found sound, and polachek’s winning vocal presence, here dialed back from her dramatic turns in her main band and put beneath a sheen of light distortion. it’s a low-stakes project, but it’s very charming. ccfx ep, ccfx i like the darkness of this ep - it feels vaguely cyberpunky with all the echoing drums and buzzing synth pads. i’m not sure about the songcraft, which is a little vaporous; a little focus and shorter, punchier song structures would be nice with this textural approach. the second half of the ep bears this out, as the songs get shorter and more memorable (’ode,’ ‘2tru’). perfect velvet, red velvet this is the most fully realized project i’ve heard from red velvet. their concept (half red - i.e. bubblegum pop - and half velvet, meaning smooth r&b) has meant that their music suffers from an identity crisis; in the past, they’ve produced incredible individual songs without pulling together their influences into a coherent album. perfect velvet, however, makes it work - the production leans toward 80s bubblegum but the melodic approach is all r&b (’look’), so the balance is just right.
