WHAT is This in 2 Néfi 5:21? broooo 💀💀💀💀💀
I've delayed answering this ask for a little bit because I wanted to be thoughtful with it, even though your ask itself honestly says most of my opinion 🤣 It is an insane verse!! Shock and cringe are absolutely the correct response to it!!
Church scholars have discussed this verse and the surrounding sections at LENGTH. Apologists have tried to downplay or deny how obviously racist it is; some people I've talked with will instead distance it from the Church's current viewpoints. When I was in high school, my seminary teachers emphasized that the "cursing because of their iniquity" and the "skin of blackness" were separate occurrences: the Lamanites were cursed by being cut off from God's presence, and then, as a separate thing from a curse, they were marked in a way that would make the Nephites avoid them. God isn't a racist, but Nephite society might have been racist. When i was in college at BYU, my Book of Mormon professors talked about the possibility that Nephi himself held racist views, and/or that Joseph Smith Jr. did, and those opinions affected the way they wrote. Again, the point they held was that God is not racist and that black skin is not a curse--but that God's prophets, being imperfect mortal humans, might have thought so.
My wife, who is proudly American Indian and a staunch member of the Church (and has the most beautiful skin of brownness in the world), has a different opinion of this verse: she interprets the talk of white and black skin to be less about literal skin color and more about health and wellbeing. "Fair and delightsome" can refer to a skin that is bright, well-hydrated, vitalized, and soft. On the other hand, when someone is dirty, malnourished, and unhappy, their skin can get grey and sallow. This interpretation recognizes that people all descended from the same bloodline will probably all have the same general amount of melanin, and God is not going to magically change that based on how good or bad they are. The visual difference between the Nephites and the Lamanites would instead be a natural consequence of their different lifestyles and values.
Unfortunately, the idea that Good Nephites Are White and Bad Lamanites Are Black was so disgustingly pervasive throughout the Church that it saturates almost all the spiritual art we grew up with. Book of Mormon heroes were consistently portrayed as pale Europeans by cartoons, comics, novels, and iconic paintings, not just in their skin tone but in their features and even their clothing. In those same media, Lamanites--the villains and the outsiders--were dark-complexioned Mesoamericans wearing loincloths and feathers. Shock and cringe are the correct response to this!!!
Here at Book of Mormon Memes, we recognize that neither the Nephites nor the Lamanites fit into our modern definitions of White or Black. Lehi's family came from the Middle East, and later populations in the Book of Mormon lived in Central America and integrated with the indigenous people there. Realistically, they should look like people from Palestine and Lebanon and Mexico and Guatemala. They should not look like this pasty travesty that somehow became a cornerstone of our religious culture holy crap

If you remember them, would you feel like recommending some of the video essays you mentioned in the “resources for Paranormality” ask? I’m deeply obsessed with supernatural stuff rn and I’d love to watch them
unfortunately I wasnt able to track down so many. I know my most recent chapter for the Jorogumo was inspired by Nephis' video "The Most Dangerous Fantasy Creatures of All Time" but it was more of a entertainment/scary reading than an essay. but i think theres a 2nd part i havent seen yet so.
and unfortunately a lot of the time what i meant was that i'd be watching an unrelated video essay, and a creature/concept might have been brought up in conjuction to it. So tracking down exactly where they appear was... impossible. (I tried)
Not video essays, but the "Lore" podcast has been in my top 3 podcasts for years if you like true (or as verified as they can be) stories about absolutely incomprehensible or terribly dark things.
I honestly want to just sit here and list every video essay ive ever watched regardless of content but alas ill try and keep it relevant and leave it there.

I don't usually share from my personal scripture study, as it is often very personal and sacred to me, but something about this page has compelled me to do so. Someone needs this. Perhaps many do.
Chapter 28 of the 2nd Book of Nephi in the Book of Mormon highlights 3 of the Adversary's main tools, which can clearly be seen in the world today. The tools are as follows:
1. Rage (anger against truth, taking offense)
2. False Security (all is well, there's no need to assist God in His work)
3. Flattery (no consequences exist, do whatever makes you feel validated)
The Devil has indeed planted rage, false security, and flattery in my own heart throughout my life. I have attempted to resist, many times successfully, but I have fallen victim to each of these more times that I can count. I will also face many more instances of each of these in the future, and I'm sure sometimes I will fail.
I share this as a warning. I have lived the consequences of both good and evil in the choices that I make. PLEASE be aware of Satan's tools, because perhaps that will help you arm yourself against them!
Lucifer is real. He exists in misery, and his one goal is to carefully draw as many of God's children as possible away from our divine potential. God allows this, because it lets you and me make our own choices every day. We are free to choose.
Hope is also real. The last verse of Chapter 28 (not pictured here), verse 32, says "...nevertheless, I will be merciful unto them, saith the Lord God, if they will repent and come unto me..."
It's not too late. But you must act NOW. Time is short. Jesus Christ will return to the earth in power and great glory. I pray you and I will be ready.

So after Nephi quotes a huge section of the Book of Isaiah, the 2nd Book of Nephi gets SUSPICIOUSLY better written than the Book of Mormon has been up to this point.
...Almost like Joseph Smith never actually read any of the Bible until he quoted a big section of it, then went "Huh. So THIS is what it sounds like."
Speaking of "Bible":
3 And because my words shall hiss forth—many of the Gentiles shall say: A Bible! A Bible! We have got a Bible, and there cannot be any more Bible. 4 But thus saith the Lord God: O fools, they shall have a Bible; and it shall proceed forth from the Jews, mine ancient covenant people. And what thank they the Jews for the Bible which they receive from them? Yea, what do the Gentiles mean? Do they remember the travails, and the labors, and the pains of the Jews, and their diligence unto me, in bringing forth salvation unto the Gentiles? 5 O ye Gentiles, have ye remembered the Jews, mine ancient covenant people? Nay; but ye have cursed them, and have hated them, and have not sought to recover them. But behold, I will return all these things upon your own heads; for I the Lord have not forgotten my people. 6 Thou fool, that shall say: A Bible, we have got a Bible, and we need no more Bible. Have ye obtained a Bible save it were by the Jews?
I like how God describes himself as "hissing," randomly. That's a thing.
Also note that this is supposedly a prophesy given to a guy in 600 BC, when no one had anything anyone called "a Bible," except the book of plates Nephi has, and Joseph Smith made that up.
This passage is specifically Joseph Smith having God tell Nephi that people in the 1830s are going to make fun of his stupid Bible fantasy book, because they are RACIST...against Jews...and by Jews, I mean white people who are Mormons, who are the REAL Jews.
Because God hates the actual Jews preemptively in 600 BC for not becoming Christians, 600 years later. And also there are the Jews Nephi is a part of who went to North America and became Native Americans, but they made Him mad later and He cursed them with being dark-skinned, so they don't count as Jews anymore, either.
Also this version of God has already said He prefers Gentiles now, i.e., non-Jews. I.e., white people. But only if they are Mormons, which is based on a Jewish Native American book He gave to a white guy, and that made the Mormons the new Jews.
I think...?
13 And it shall come to pass that the Jews shall have the words of the Nephites, and the Nephites shall have the words of the Jews; and the Nephites and the Jews shall have the words of the lost tribes of Israel; and the lost tribes of Israel shall have the words of the Nephites and the Jews.

2 Nephi 33:3-Nephi cries in his sleep, making the pillow (?) wet. Thats só cute. And in This book he is old, right? Só its like an granpa crying of worry for his grandchildren. Anyways, i'm happy to finally begin jacob's book. I found his speach on 2 Nephi to be incredibly boring. Pls Jacob be less boring in your book pls
Also, two new missionaries appeared in the chapel. You guys need to start to give umbrellas for them. They are só red, i felt bad for them. And they are also from utah. Is This the capital of missionaries?
Utah is absolutely the capital of missionaries. Salt Lake City was founded by early Mormons expelled from the Northeast/Midwest USA, and a lot of us never left! Or just keep coming back! The Church Hedquarters is here too, and a lot of other important foundational locations.
As for Jacob's book...I really enjoy the story at the end of it! And the famous longest chapter ever has some really great imagery and symbolism! Whether or not it's less boring than his speech from before I will leave to your opinion 😂

February 2nd is...
Girls And Women In Sports Day -  Athletics play an important role in girls’ lives. Besides helping to establish a routine for a healthy, active lifestyle, sports build confidence, leadership skills, and the ability to work with a team.
Groundhog Day -  Traditionally the groundhog awakens from his nap for a nice welcomed break during the winter to see if he can see his shadow. Many believe if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If this is so, he retreats into his den and goes back to sleep. However, if he does not see his shadow, the groundhog remains outside to play, and people celebrate, believing spring is just around the corner.
Heavenly Hash Day -  When it comes to defining Heavenly Hash, the only ingredient that seems for certain is a variety of marshmallows, marshmallow creme or whip. Other ingredients vary, though. Some recipes create delicious cakes with chocolate and marshmallow. And yet, others lean more toward a fruit salad with whipped cream and a variety of nuts or chocolate bars added. Nearly every brand of ice cream has its version of Heavenly Hash with nuts and chocolate included, too.
Tater Tot Day -  Two brothers, Nephi and Golden Grigg, along with their brother-in-law started dabbling in frozen food when they rented a plant on the Oregon and Idaho borders in 1934. They focused on making French fries, but the waste fed to cattle seemed excessive. Was there a way to reduce the excess? Maybe, but instead, they chose to create a product from the excess. Not only did the scrapped and shredded bits form into tasty bites when blanched and fried, but they also fit into their product line, too. They froze well, could be baked, and were delicious! By 1952, they purchased the plant, forming the Oregon Frozen Foods Company that would later become Ore-Ida.
World Play Your Ukulele Day - The ukulele is a member of the guitar family of instruments. While the guitar has six strings, the ukulele only has four. Ukuleles are much smaller than guitars. This is why people with smaller hands choose the ukulele over the guitar. Because of its smaller size, the ukulele is also a good instrument for kids. The four notes on the ukulele are G, C, E, and A. The word ukulele is a Hawaiian word that means “jumping flea.” It became known as that because when skillfully played, it looks like the fingers are jumping around on the strings like a flea. Even though it has a Hawaiian name, the instrument was actually brought to the island by Portuguese immigrants. *BTW if you have not heard Israel Kamakawiwo’ole on his uke singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, you must
World Read Aloud Day -  It’s never too early for parents to start reading to their children. When parents read aloud to their kids, it helps foster language development and social-emotional learning. Additionally, reading aloud promotes happiness in children. When parents read to their children, it creates a spark in children to become joyful readers themselves. Also, both children and parents enjoy the special bond that gets created when parents read to their children.
World Wetlands Day -  Wetlands are a distinct ecosystem that is flooded by water, either permanently or seasonally. Examples of wetlands include swamps, lagoons, coral reefs, and saltmarshes. The vegetation of aquatic plants make wetlands different from other landforms or water bodies. Wetlands also support both aquatic and land animals. With the exception of Antarctica, wetlands exist on every continent. Sadly, wetlands throughout the world are disappearing. In fact, wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests. Between the years 1970 and 2015, about 35% of the world’s wetlands were lost. Wetlands disappear for many reasons. These include climate change, urbanization, and population increases. Pollution, unsustainable use, and invasive species also threaten the existence of wetlands.

I haven't had a chance to write down how I'm feeling lately. Since it's January 2nd I just wanted to write down how the first day of a new year went.
It was an okay day. I had Sunday off like I normally do. I woke up around nine and got to sleep in. The bed we have is a piece of dogshit and my back has been fucked for a while.
We had the older kids for a week and it was the last day we had with them. They mostly stayed in their room we have set up for them. My stepdaughter on her phone/tablet and my stepson on his tablet.
It was snowing all day. The baby was pretty okay for the most part. Doing toddler things like getting into everything and asking me to watch Paw Patrol for the 72nd time which is normal for her.
Later that afternoon I put her down for a nap and I got to relax with the older kids and my husband. She woke up around 4:30 or so and about 5:15 I had the bright idea to shovel the driveway to help my husband since he did the porch in the back yard earlier that day.
I figured since I'm out here let me get the kids ready to play in the snow. The baby lasted ten minutes maybe as she kept putting her hands directly in the snow and cried and said ouch (I need to buy her some damn gloves)
My stepson made a snow Angel, we had a snowball fight with the older two kids. After ten minutes I took her back in to warm up with her dad who stayed in because it was too cold.
My step daughter went in and after five minutes I had my step son play in the back yard with the snow. My husband finished up dinner.
Later that night, we watched Star Wars. The two older ones could give a flying fuck about the movie. My stepson I guess is on the spectrum so I had to get on top of him on certain things. The baby was in and out of watching the movie and would rather watch Cocomelon.
I fell asleep twenty minutes before it ended. Around 10 the kids went to bed and so did the baby. Husband fell asleep on me which was fantastic because I never see him or get to spend time with him since I've been working a lot of overtime.
Not a bad first of the year.
January 2nd
I woke up at 830 because my back has been fucking killing me since I shoveled the snow last night. I picked their bags, made breakfast and of course yelled at my stepson because he can't pay attention to anything more than five seconds at a time.
Around 11 am we left. Husband is driving and we've seen several cars spin out because of the snow, multiple car wrecks and Utah drivers who can't drive worth dick.
This trip usually takes three hours to drop the kids off and it's taken an hour more due to heavy traffic, having to rebuckle this toddler and readjust myself over and over to get comfortable.
I'll write more when I have something else to update with besides get off my lawn, my back hurts etc 😂
EDIT
2:30 p.m 1/2/23
Dropped off the kids with their mom. Due to weather and snow for us she beat us by ten minutes when we are normally early. I changed the baby in the bathroom. I came back out and had the older two hug their sister.
I strapped her in and husband said we'll stop in an hour and I said well let me pee. I went back inside to pee and while in the bathroom my stepson hugged me and I cried. I owed went back out with the kids and their mom. My daughter hugged me and I hugged her right and cried again.
I tried so hard to hold it together but the connection I feel with her has always been there since day one. I made sure the baby was strapped in tightly since she Houdini'd herself out of the damn car seat during the way there.
I forgot the tablet and husband said I was gonna say to hop back with her. I almost dove back there since she was complaining already. She had my phone the whole way.
Between where we live and Nephi it got really scary. We made it home at 6 pm and left at 11 am. What a long stressful drive. It's eight and a hot shower is calling my name.
Happy New Years for what it's worth

That time Joseph Smith was writing the 2nd Book of Nephi and just went, "I'm going to copypaste a bunch of the Book of Isaiah in here to pad this out."
It is such a stark difference. Like the Bible, even in translation, is so very much better wrtten than fakey bullshit pretend Bible-talk.
Nothing makes you appreciate the Old Testament more as a literary work than having it sandwiched between this "and it came to pass" garbage.
This is like if Neil Breen stopped pretending to pet a stock footage tiger, looked at the screen, said "You know what I like? The movie Casablanca." Then just spliced in like 15 minutes of that movie, before going back to pretending to fly over a picture of a warehouse.
...This is a bad example though because that would be AMAZING.

Sorry for not posting anything this past week! I’ve just moved house and our internet was out until today. A little update though! I got my A level results a few days ago, and I’m happy to say I passed all three subjects with a C grade. I know it’s nothing incredible but those exams were the hardest things I've ever done, especially the English lit ones. I was certain Id fail everything with a D or E so I’m so thankful the Lord helped me pass. Other than that I just booked my New York city trip, and I will be attending my first lds church service on the 29th of October in Manhattan. Very exciting!
#I just moved so my local ward is a little closer but its still an hour and a bit away#which is why I can't attend for the time being#I'm very excited!#only issue is I haven't been able to read my Scripture because we've been moving allweek#and bc out internet was down I couldn't do my lessons with Faith#I read my bom all the way down to London and back on the train#I got a lot of weird looks from the business men#but it was ok because I got to read for a couple of hours at a time which really helped me understand everything#normally I read 4 or 5 chapters but I read almost all of 2nd nephi in one go#which was great#and it was scary to pray in front of all those strangers#I hope that gets easier soon#I would really love to attend church as soon as I can its just working out how ill get there#its a 20 minute bus journey and a 40 minute + walk#and I don't know if I've said but my mum is very anti mormon so id have to make up a reason as to why I'm going out so early#im not saying I won't but for the time being I can't#when I get back from New York it'll be another story#I dont think I could bear not going after the first time#its pretty annoying because theres a church of England church less than a minutes walk from my house#which I used to attend#but I can't really go there now#I probably will around Christmas but apart from that I think id feel a bit weird#also the vicar there isn't very nice I remember him from my childhood#maybe in a few years if we get a new vicar#our old one was lovely but he was very old and passed when I was in primary school#also my nan told me I shouldn't wear a cross even if its tiny because people are getting targeted for wearing them?#is that true?#I know christians have historically been persecuted but I haven't heard of anything recently#post#update

How to Give a Good Talk in Church
Part 1: general rules for speaking:
First and foremost, be as genuine as possible. Be yourself! Speak like you normally would in a conversation. People want to listen to someone who speaks with personality. Don’t worry about saying “um”, don’t apologize for being bad at speaking. You’re not preaching; you don’t have to prepare a sermon. You were called on to speak because you have a unique personality and outlook. Share it!
Similar to the first one, avoid “general conference speak.” You are not an apostle. No one expects you to be. It’s annoying if you try to be one. Avoid phrases like, “dearest brothers and sisters,” “dearly beloved brethren,” “don’t listen to me, listen to the spirit,” “I promise you that God loves each and every one of you.” All it does is make you sound pretentious.
Don’t start by telling how the bishop asked you to speak or how much you hate speaking in church. It has nothing to do with your topic, it’s overdone, and do you really think people are going to listen to you if the first thing you tell them is that you don’t want to be speaking?
For the love of all that is holy, spit out your gum. Do not be chewing anything while you are inches from a microphone.
Study for your talk. It helps a lot. You’re more confident and can actually bear your testimony on it because you’ve put in the work to build it. A useful tool is searching general conference talks for your topic and then going from there.
Part 2: structure your talk like an essay.
Start with an introduction. Optional: A few sentences about who you are with something fun to remember you by. Unless you are assigned to speak about your whole life story and how you met your wife and all the different places you’ve lived and what they were like—Don’t.
“I’m Anna. I’m from Wyoming, I’ve been in this ward for almost year, and I’m currently studying English in college. A fun fact about me is that I love tacos and have a killer tacos al pastor recipe that I’m willing to share.”
Introduce the topic. You can keep it simple. Like,
“I was assigned to speak about the Holy Ghost. I wanted to narrow that down to how the Holy Ghost gives us strength in difficult moments.”
Or, you could start off with a personal experience or paraphrasing a scripture story. If you go that route, make sure you relate back to it later in the talk.
Have a thesis or ask an open ended question.
Example thesis: sometimes we’re so focused on the Holy Ghost as a comforter that we forget he’s a member of the Godhead and can empower us. Looking at the examples of Nephi with Laban, Timothy, and Nephi and Lehi in prison, we can take notes on how the Holy Ghost can give us strength.
Example question: so, how does the Holy Ghost give us strength in difficult moments?
The body of your talk: narrow it down! It’s better to give 2 or 3 good, complete examples or scriptures than to try to quote every scripture related to your topic. In my example, I would go on to explain the 3 stories I brought up.
Include scriptures and quotes, but give a reason and explanation for each one. If it’s long, paraphrase. Introduce a quote by first introducing the subject it teaches about. After the quote, explain how it ties into the theme of your talk.
Example: ‘When Timothy was disheartened, the apostle Paul wrote him a letter, which is now 2nd Timothy in the New Testament. He tells Timothy: “Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Now, what gift do we receive by the laying on of hands? The Gift of the Holy Ghost! Paul’s telling Timothy, “hey, don’t be afraid! Remember that the Lord is always with you because you received the gift of the Holy Ghost!” From this scripture, we also learn that the Holy Ghost is a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. The Holy Ghost.....’
The last li’l bit: your testimony and how you can apply it to your life. A testimony doesn’t have to be, “I’d like to bear my testimony that I know this church is true...” It can be as simple as:
“I’d never thought about the Holy Ghost this way before, but as a i studied for this talk, I learned how much the Lord really loves us and wants us to succeed. Look at all the tools we have! In my life, I’m going to apply to apply this by......” relate it back to something earlier in the talk: “like Paul told Timothy, we all have the potential to have a spirit of power and love.
