as for more to tell uhhh its been a bit since i worked on her but i have few takes on her (cause im very indecisive and also i like aus) some include her moving next door to the matsunos and it turning into something akin to "the cutie next door" episode, others include her summoning a demon (akuma osomatsu) because she feels like her life is going nowhere

but the main story i came up with for her was her finding osomatsu passed out on the sidewalk after a heavy night of drinking, and her being too good of a person for her own good taking him back to her place and letting him crash on the couch with pain meds and water next to him on the coffee table. after this osomatsu CONVENIENTLY (purposely) keeps getting black out drunk and passing out at that specific area only to wind up on her couch every time until they eventually grow closer and start hanging out when hes not dealing with a hangover

its a hot mess of a story and thats what i was aiming for lol

First impression:

This is a hard one bc my first impression was from 2009, but I thiiiiiink beyond the initial "WOW ITS INVADER ZIM" hype my impression must have been something like thinking Raz is cool and funny? One of the earliest drawings I can remember doodling of him were Raz surrounded by the hand of galochio and Raz reading his camp pamphlet while sittin on a lev ball so I can assume my fascination with him did start at "he's got some interesting issues going on" even if I wasn't particularly good at expressing these thoughts or thinking too hard about him at the time.

Impression now:

What a fun, stellar kid character. He's funny, he's a little stinker, he's dedicated to what he believes in, he makes mistakes, he both acts wise beyond his years and just like a 10 year old. He's a wonderful protagonist and I think he's truly the heart of what makes the game shine, he has a heart and humor he brings into the levels that I think the games would be lacking without.

Favorite moment:

There's soooo many great moments with Raz... hard to pick a favorite! But I think a moment where Raz, the boy, shines is when he's first meeting the mote of light. Here he is standing in front of the remnants of this person that to him is some random nobody from Otto's brain bin, and his first instinct is to talk gently, and follow him around, and figure out a way he could help. He isn't even actively trying to in that moment, but he exemplifies the qualities of a true psychonaut (in Hollis' terms) there quite wonderfully.

Plus that moment really lets the character animation shine because all there is to work with is Raz, a Light Source, and a big Empty Black Box. His character animation is absolutely spectacular.

Idea for a story:

I think Raz bonding with his family could make for some sweet post-game story material!

Unpopular opinion:

I don't think Raz would ever unlock a maligula type fight or flight complex unless some INCREDIBLY non-canonical shit happened to him. Raz has insane mental defenses, which I'm sure will only get better with age, while Lucy's major weakness was that she had the mental defenses of a wet tissue due to her time opening her mind with her friends. It also just feels like it in some way misses the point of what an utter, huge and personally specific tragedy Maligula is for Lucy. Maligula is a part of her, not just anybody.

Favorite relationship:

Raz and his Father's bond has always gotten me to go 🥺 I've thought about the ending to the first game a lot and what it meant for a game to take Raz's dad and say "he's not evil, he's just a parent who's made some mistakes that Raz is justified in being mad about but they're still mistakes that can be rectified with time"

Augustus' dialogue with Raz in the second game is also all incredibly sincere and cute, "we psychics understand each other, right?" hits me good

Favorite headcanon:

His goggles help block out bright lights and his helmet blocks out sound because he's got sensory issues

What have to be your favorite levels in the second game? How do you feel about the new characters? Any favorites in particular? (Also I know exactly how you feel, I LOVE this game too much so now I'm watching more playthroughs from streamers this time to see how they feel about the game :D)

Those are hard questions, actually! I like all the different levels for different reasons. They’re all so creative and unique; I don’t think I can pick just one. But some highlights that are coming to me now (cut bc spoilers, even though it’s tagged): 

I did really love Cassie’s level, especially the flashback section in the docks. It just has such a cool look and sound, even within the context of the level itself. And Bob’s Bottles is so sweet and sad, and I think it does an especially lovely, subtle job of expressing what he’s going through.

Ford’s levels are all super dark in a way that I feel like no other levels in either game match, which makes them very memorable. (Plus major props to the programmers on those bowling balls in Strike City, because that mechanic could have been ultra frustrating but instead it was really responsive and fun.) 

And Fatherland Follies it just *chef’s kiss* perfection. Totally unexpected and yet brings everything together in a way that makes it a super satisfying twist. THE best take on a villain monologue I’ve seen, maybe ever. Also it’s hilarious. It’s such a delight partially because the whole story leading up to it is getting increasingly bleak and frightening and confusing and you don’t know where it’s going to go- and then you get Fatherland Follies, and it’s like coming back home to everything Psychonauts was always meant to be. A++

Oh, and the real world areas are all amazing! Way more of it than I expected and just beautiful. The Questionable Area is just so good. 

As for characters, I think I enjoyed every new character! They all brought something to the table that made the game richer in some way. (None of them grabbed my heart and latched on like a koala the way Sasha and Milla did, but that’s fairly rare for me, anyway.) That being said, how can you not love Sam? And I really like the direction Tim went with Hollis. Psychonauts has always been great about giving you characters that you might expect to be one way, based on the surface things you know about them, and then giving them depth in unexpected places. And he’s not new, but...Raz is just the most precious boy. All I want for him is to have the happiest and best life.
