advice for someone from another country visiting new york for the first time for like 2weeks?

ahh honored that you would ask my advice!

General/boring advice: be prepared for Weather (carry a sweatshirt and an umbrella bc the ones they sell on the street are shit, carry a handfan bc the trains aren't always air conditioned), avoid the G and L trains wherever possible, and the 1 train on the weekends, be alert but don't be afraid, pay attention to subway announcements and read the subway maps carefully (ppl will know you're a tourist if you're glued to the map inside the train car but who cares), avoid times square if you can help it, walk fast if you're in midtown everyone will be grateful, dont smile at strangers except old ladies and babies, thank your bus driver. Follow @got2gonyc on insta bc they have a map of public bathrooms that is VITAL (my personal favorite public bathroom in nyc is inside the shops at columbus circle.)

NOW for fun stuff/ Grand List of Recommendations. im going to split this into sections and go into WAY too much depth. im also assuming you're staying in manhattan but going to provide recs throughout the boroughs

Culture

if you have some money to burn, definitely see some theatre. If you like musicals, Kimberly Akimbo has $40 rush tickets (meaning if you show up at the box office right when it opens you can get cheap seats), Parade has $45 rush (if you're going to the city before it closes).

see a film at the Metrograph or Film Forum (metrograph has uncomfy seats tbh but always shows great stuff.) The Angelika is also fine, and Alamo Drafthouse is not NY-specific but it's cool.

go to The Strand! not on a weekend bc it's far too crowded but there are just so. many. books. or go to a community bookstore like Word Up in Washington Heights or Bluestockings downtown (lots of queer and political books)

You gotta do a museum or two. The Museum of the Moving Image in Queens is all about film and if you love movies, it is beyond delightful. You can spend a whole day at the Met just wandering, but if you like an agenda, I really recommend going to the Dutch painting collection in Gallery 964 and checking out my favorite painting I've ever seen up close, as well as the sculpture garden in the American Wing, the Asian Wing, the Islamic Wing, and the Egyptian exhibit (you have to walk through it to get to a bunch of other things anyway). There are some van Goghs there, too, and the costuming exhibit and and and-- ok i'll stop here. The American Museum of Natural History has the ability to make you feel like a kid again if you were into science as a child.

Lots of museums, including El Museo del Barrio, Bronx Museum of Art, and the Museum of Jewish Heritage have days where admission is free. Lot of the galleries in Chelsea are also free every day (including the Gagosian Galleries on West 24th and the Chase Contemporary)

Visit a library! The big one in midtown or a smaller one (Morningside Heights Library by the Columbia campus is nice, I like the Mosholu one in the Bronx as well)

Food

you cannot leave NY without having a good NY bagel. Downtown: Bagel Bob's. Uptown: Pick-A-Bagel. Bronx: Riverdale Bagels (you need a bus to get to this one, or a long walk, but worth it.) Downtown, midtown, and Brooklyn: Russ and Daughter's. any old dollar pizza place is probably great, but if you want to be fancy, go to Luzzo's on the upper east side.

if you eat fish, Astoria Seafood is a MUST. fresh, delicious, no frills, BYOB. easy to get lost on the way there if you don't know Queens, so be careful.

Queens in general is a great place to eat. Most diverse urban community in the world! Mama's Empanadas (right by the Museum of the Moving Image, on Steinway Street) is a strong recommendation there, as well. Hot pot, bubble tea, Greek food, and momos are, as a general rule, very good in Queens.

if you want relatively affordable sushi and sake, Marumi is my go-to in Manhattan.

if you want a bougie brunch or dinner, go to Lido in Harlem. Any Jamaican place in Harlem or buffet-style southern food is likely to be good if you want to be adventurous and just pick one. Pies n Thighs in Brooklyn is also good southern-inspired food if you eat meat.

Tasty Handpulled Noodles in Chinatown (there's one on Doyers and one on 9th ave) is some of the best Chinese food. Chinatown Ice Cream Factory is upsettingly expensive but very delicious.

If you like to cook, go to Kalustyan's in Little India and get yourself some spices. They have more kinds of pepper there than you've ever seen in your life.

there is a sandwich shop in the Bronx i will ONLY tell you about via dm bc i won't have my secret faves revealed in a public forum.

Green Spaces/Nature

Wave Hill up in Riverdale is beyond beautiful, and free on Thursdays. A bit of a trek from any trains, buses involved etc, but worth it!!

If you're going with friends or peers, a picnic in Central Park (North Meadow by the 103rd st/CPW entrance is a good spot, also Sheep Meadow or the Great Lawn) or just a walk through the park can be amazing. A little touristy, but who's counting.

The Coney Island Aquarium (whether or not you also go to the amusement park) is really nice. Very far from Manhattan, but easy to find (lots of crowds lots of signs)

I don't know Prospect Park in Brooklyn super well, other than the area right by Ample Hills Creamery-- great ice cream, by the way-- but it's pretty and really huge. On that note, also try The Social in Brooklyn for ice cream and DEFINITELY eat an icee from a cart. Churros from a cart in the subway in particular also always hit.

It is tenuous to call this nature but the Union Square Farmer's Market pops up every Saturday and you can buy really good produce/honey/flowers/booze (also, incidentally, right by a good ice cream place, Van Leeuwen's) ((also incidentally, I'm at the market pretty much every Saturday. idk if meeting a tumblr friend is on your want list but yeah.))

It is hard getting back on track studying after taking a 2week long break.

Last month around this time I was studying 12plus hours a day with ease and now I can barely study for 2 hours😆 As much as I love studying without any exam stress looks like I have used up all my brain cells for NEETPG🤣

Also got to experiment a bit with Adobe premiere pro! After all, what better time to fine-tune my skills until I join my residency 💕

I'm back (dubiously. I can't make or keep promises online to save my life lmao) from my 2week ??hiatus?? thing. Here's the jist;

2ish weeks ago, I got a job. Without going into tmi, I had to leave said job. No one did anything wrong (well. Maybe not the employees. but the employers might have some proverbial blood on their hands.) but either way, the circumstances leading up to my leave were overwhelming to me, so i feel. horrible.

Now I'm back, ready to keep on what I was doing before I got a job.

I don't need comfort, there's no cause for worry, everything is okay despite the circumstances and how I'm feeling, and we Should survive okay on one paycheck. Of course I always sound the alarm when that changes 😅 and thank you guys for reading, btw.

The silver lining is that, going out to a job, even if it's brief, always gives me a kind of new perspective on life, and it usually ends up benefitting my tangible, positive influence on the physical world that surrounds me. And my art too!

Daddy Damian!

Ok first Damian would love to be a dad. Even before he meets Irey some part of him wants to be a dad. These headcannons center around how I think he’d be a dad to my OC Asha

-Damian loves giving her a bath. Asha really hates baths (Linda says Irey and Jai were the same way). Damian’s perfected the art of bathtime so she doesn’t cry.

-Damian spends a lot of his free time reading to her. His brothers have walked into the library before to find their little brother reading Shakespeare to his newborn daughter more than once.

-Irey did film Asha’s birth, mostly so Irey could go back one day and remember it. Damian, who was still dead, wants to watch it. He holds Irey while he watches her bring their beautiful girl into the world. Afterwards he tells her she’s one of the strongest women he’s ever met.

-He loves holding his baby flower.

-Once, Irey and Asha visited a training session he was teaching. Asha, around 1.5 years old, wanted to spar with her baba. Damian let her “beat him up”

Damian lies dramatically on the floor, arms splayed out. Asha tilts her head, shuffling over, “baba? Baba?”

“I’m dead I’m gone. Go one without me.”

-He makes sure Irey takes time for herself. I’m of the stance that dads don’t babysit their own kids, they raise them just like the moms do. So Damian makes sure Irey has time to go for a run or just take a little time for herself.

-he hates that he didn’t get to be there in the room when Asha was born, or see Irey when she was pregnant.

-Irey and Damian have a standing date night every Friday for them to go out. Asha stays with her aunties and uncles.

-Damian actually cries when her first word is baba.

-While he can be firm and stern, he tries not to yell at Asha

-He will never, ever raise a hand to her or her mother. That’s not romanticizing normal behavior. Damian grew up in a place where being hit was a very real part of his life. He doesn’t want his daughter to go through that.

-Asha meet Titus when she’s about a week-2weeks old. Damian held her while the big dog sniffed her and licked her little toes.

-Titus ends up mating with another dog. Damian and Irey decide to keep one of the puppies for Asha. They name her Jamila.

-Asha and Irey are the parts of his life he knows he doesn’t deserve and works so hard to keep safe.

-Damian likes to dance with Asha and Irey around the living room.

-He’s had tea parties with her before. His brothers were later roped into one by their very demanding niece.

-Damian usually puts her hair in pigtails, making Irey laughs

-When Damian and Irey get married, Irey has her father daughter dance with Wally. She looks over and Damian is swaying with Asha in the corner.

Future

In one week I will have graduated from University with a Bachelor’s in Wildlife Ecology and Management. The future weighs heavy upon my mind as I try to look forward. I’d like to utilize my degree but feel like I need to volunteer and build more work history. So in the meantime I have decided to stay in my hometown for a little while longer, build some equity and help my partner get a technical degree.

Another conclusion I have come to is that I desperately want to be a content creator. I’ve put off my creative efforts in lieu of school and because of subpar mental health. I’m frustrated with my current skill and capabilities in these things I do recreationally and I want to change that.

Below the break I’m gonna list my goals, and how exactly I want to achieve them.

Anime Banzai I thought long and hard about applying for 2018 but decided it would be best to wait another year since I haven’t done much artwork for sometime now. I want to improve my anatomy and practice painting backgrounds in particular. I also want to offer more handicraft kind of things: mug cozies, jewelery And to work on providing more print size variety by getting things printed in smaller batches that aren’t so financially draining.

Art Classes Tentatively planning on visiting my Aunt this summer and doing something with her. My partner and I were also talking about taking a ceramic class. That would probably be this fall. I am also interested in taking a digital photography class and I’d love to take some traditional painting classes within the year too.

Writing I have a few stories/character I need to just push myself to write and edit later. My goal is in one year to have the first draft of a story totally done from start to end without getting hung up in editing. I also really want to try DMing so I need to make a few one shot campaigns and then work towards fleshing out the long campaign idea I have. I would like to have DMed at least one if not two one-shots.

Podcasting Depending on how DMing goes I’d like to edit that and post it as a podcast. The other podcast I would like to do would be specifically about snakes. My goal is to find someone willing to co-host and go through individual species and talk about them with me.

Streaming I want to set up a regular stream schedule to help build viewership and consistency. Right now I am trying to improve my Overwatch gameplay so that I’m fun and interesting to watch. Beyond that though I’d like to stream other things. I’d like to set aside a day for art streaming, and for playing other games besides Overwatch.

Post-Graduation I want to look for short fieldwork opportunities (1-2weeks) or other work in town to start padding my resume with. I also want to look more seriously into grad school.

Creating Ritual and Modern Mythologies are part of what the //2weeks process is about for my artistic practice. Alongside the artistic practice, I am developing other rituals and practices, and often the daily drawings are a reflection of these practices. These practices include moving my body, strengthening my core, a prayer to the universe and a mantra for courage, strength, grace, and persistence. Many of the images reflect my ideation of prayer as an atheist during this time of silence and spiritual vacation. The title of the residency is a nod to the My Favorite Murder podcast and their readings of the things that listeners write in about — things that have made them happy, their achievements, their hopes, their picking themselves up after immense difficulties, and their dreams coming true by their own hard work and self love. Daily practice is the key to many of the joys in life, and achievements, and that is why every day there needs to be a fucking hooray. I haven’t drawn in years beyond a doodle, and this is my reintroduction to the practice of imagining, observing, creativity, and drawing, in order to tap back into a part of myself that has been hiding deep within me. Every drawing is without judgement, and without the necessity of producing what I have been taught art should be, and the intention is only to express myself, and to make lines with my hands and body every day that create a center through which to express meaning.
