31 Days Idol Challenge - Oliver Riedel

Day 19 - Showing Back

Since Oliver still plays concerts "oberkörper frei", it is not that difficult to find photos of his back. Oliver has a lean and muscular body, and even though he is now in his 50s, he is in great shape.

While he painted his body dark for the entire 2023 Europe Stadium Tour, if anything, darker complexions can make muscles pop in bright light. My pick for this challenge is a photo from Budapest by Matthias Matthies. The contrast colours in the photo make it really stunning.

Bonus material: 1) Another photo from 2023 Europe Stadium Tour, this time from Brussels taken by Jens Koch. I love when Oliver and Richard find together on stage, and this photo from Mein Teil is such a great example of that. 2-3) Screenshots from the Making of Rosenrot. The band members didn't want to use make-up for the flagellation, instead they drank vodka and went out in the cold and whipped themselves. 4) I love the atmosphere in this photo by Frédéric Batier, from Völkerball, where Oliver takes a moment for himself in Budapest 2005. 5) Oliver getting his in-ears taped to his back, by Jens Koch 2019. 6) Screenshot from one of Jens Koch's videos 2023. 7) Silly little promo video for the Mein Land music video, where we see Oliver and the girls. It does show his back though. 8) Oliver during the shooting of the Mein Land music video, from the photo book by Frédéric Batier. 9) I guess these last two photos are what people expected. First out, Andreas Mühe's photo of Oliver, naked, in Winnipeg 2012... 10) ...and finally, Missy Funnybunny's photo of Oliver, taken in Paris 2012. This is probably the most well-known photo of Oliver's back, and deservedly so. It is really good.

But there is more. If Till was able to get down on his knees on stage to play puppy, there is notably a deeper meaning regarding the final salute. It's Till's initiative that the guys kneel down in front of us, the audience at the end of each show. And while all the guys do it, some of them don't appreciate it. Flake says about this : "I always scold Till when he is too kind. (Laughs) I don’t want to play in a band that begs for applause either. I find that disgusting, I have to break it. I also think the bowing at the end is stupid. These fans clap when they want to, so I don’t have to take an extra bow." (MetalHammer). I absolutely disagree with Flake on this because for me if Till gets down on his knees it's to show how grateful he is to us, that's his way of expressing what he feels without saying a word : he loves us.

Day 6 — Favourite instrument

Well, that's not really a question for Till, since his only instrument is his beautiful voice. However, and despite the fact that Till says he can do nothing but write and sing, he actually knows how to play a lot of instruments : drums, guitar, bass, piano, harmonica...

Currently my favorite song is Meine Tränen from Rammstein's latest album. I love listening to it so much, Till's voice and interpretation are truly splendid !

But my favourite instrument playing by Till is piano, particularly this moment (Sonoma studios, California, 2008) :

Day 11 — Doing sports

Till has always been involved in sport, of course swimming from the age of 11 at Empor Rostock Sport Club. He even took part in the European Junior Swimming Championships in Florence in 1978. But even after his swimming career, he continued to play sport, albeit less seriously and with less discipline. Here are just a few of the sports Till practised :

About swimming, Paul says about Till : "Till however had bought himself a wet suit and still swam there: I don’t know he could do it. All winter, in the Baltic Sea going back and forth in the dark. We saw this rubber suited figure constantly swimming. The jelly-fish gathered at the shore, you couldn’t go in there because of them, but he happily swam through them doing his morning exercises. It was disgusting!" - MTV Masters (2001)
