I'm on the road today (from my hometown to my city). All the way from my hometown area up till Katowice it was snowing, the weather is cold and gloomy. Now on a highway there is still some snow on the ground. I don't think I've ever driven in such a magical and beautiful atmosphere.

zack is dared he cant run a circle around midgar in one day how does it go
*Sephiroth strolls past Angeal's office and sees him in there, kicked back, magazine in hand, lemonade sweating on the desk, not a single damn being given*
Sephiroth: You're disturbingly relaxed. I kind of envy it.
Angeal: Mm. That's 'cause I dared Zack to run the perimeter of Midgar. Kid took the bait, and that bought me eight hours of peace. I've already filed reports, waxed poetic in my journal, and exfoliated.
*Enter Zack, bursting into the office. He's soaked with sweat, wearing an "I <3 Midgar" tourist tee, neon water bottle clipped to his belt, running shoes still squeaking*
Zack: WHOOO! Man, what a run! That was killer cardio!
Angeal: HUH?! You can't possibly be back already! I sent you out twenty minutes ago!
Zack: Oh, so you don't think I'm fast and strong enough to circle the entire city in under half an hour? Sephiroth! Back me up with science!
Sephiroth: Based on Midgar's outer perimeter—approximately 110 kilometers, you would've needed to run at roughly 340 km/h. That’s faster than a standard bullet train and incredibly impressive for your species.
Zack: Ha!
Angeal: You're a fraud! Sephiroth, back me up with science!
Sephiroth: Statistically speaking, Zack's calorie burn would exceed 12,000 in twenty minutes. his body would have cannibalized his organs by Sector 5. He'd be finishing the run with his spleen in his pocket. He'd liquefy his own kneecaps and turn his organs into a smoothie by Sector 4. So no. Scientifically, you did not run the entire perimeter of Midgar in twenty minutes.
Angeal: HA!
Zack: No no no, I did it, okay?! I even high-fived a guy selling grilled squid in Sector 8, petted the stray chocobo that lives near Wall Market, and got harassed by a sentient vending machine outside the scrapyard! You can't fake those! Sephiroth, back me up with science!
Sephiroth: Hm. Considering the variable layout of Midgar's sectors, average elevation shifts, and crowd congestion—plus your stride length and resting heart rate—I'd estimate a lap around the perimeter would take a seasoned SOLDIER, at peak conditioning, no less than three and a half hours with zero breaks.
Zack: I had an energy drink before the run.
Sephiroth: Yeah it'd take Zack 20 minutes.
Zack: :)
Angeal: No, this is impossible! You're not backing him up with science, you're just throwing equations around like glitter and hoping we're too dumb to question it. What, did Hojo build you without a sarcasm detector? No wonder you think Zack's superhuman. What does science say about that, huh??
Sephiroth: Science says you're a cunt.

Ok so remember this map?
Tumblr media
A complete map of Jorvik, with a semi-accurate scale to measure any distance on the island. I’m really proud of it! There is, however, one glaring problem with this map.
Tumblr media
WHY IS JORVIK CITY SO SMALL????
I’m sorry but Jorviks capital should not be smaller than middle-of-nowhere ranger town Dundull. The generally accepted minimum population requirements for a city are 50 000 residents. Following the canon map, Jorvik city would need to fit at least 50 000 people in what looks like 2,25 square miles. That would mean Jorvik city houses 22 222 people per square mile, making it the 24th most densely populated city in the WORLD.
Possible? Sure. Likely? Considering the clear inspiration from the way less dense Stockholm, the lack of giant apartment complexes or slum neigbourhoods, which would imply that people live closely together, I’m gonna have to say no.
So how big should Jorvik city be, if the map size is inaccurate? Kind of hard to tell since we can’t see places like Governors Fall or Aideens Plaza on the map.
But there is one place we CAN see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And if we can use this map, we can measure how long it takes to cross it.
Tumblr media
I am very normal about the horse game.
From the barracks to the pier, it takes 38 seconds to cross the map. On a similarly flat surface on Jorvik, we can measure how long Pier 13 actually is, giving us this comparison.
Tumblr media
Now, I’m going to show two theories on how big Jorvik City is based on these measurements.
The first one is the most canon-compliant, but also the most ridiculous. By comparing pier 13 to the area outside jorvik stables, we know that pier 13 is ~1 km long. Yes, this is an absolutely massive pier don’t worry about it. Looking at the jorvik city map, we can see that this smaller pier is meant to be to represent Pier 13, and we can do the math from there. Jorvik gets an area of 340 square km, and if we use Stockholms population density as a guide, Jorvik City has about 1,8 million citizens. Cool! One problem though.
Tumblr media
You can’t fit it on the map. A city this big would take up almost one fourth of Jorvik, and you’d need to redraw the entire map to make it fit.
So my other option shifts the canon a bit to make the maps fit together. If we go against canon and assume that Pier 13 is actually the larger pier, that downsizes Jorvik City to ~47,5 square kilometres, with a population of around 250 000. This makes Jorvik more comparable to a more densely populated Reykjavik; smaller in area but with double the amount of people. And while it still messes with the coastline a bit, it at least fits into Central Bay.
Tumblr media
Personally I think both theories work, but for consistency’s sake, I’m leaning more towards the second theory.

Congratulation...Captain?
Chapter 9
Palm trees, turquoise beaches and pure joie de vivre. Twice as beautiful at sunrise. When you arrive at Puerto Rico's only international airport, you both take your luggage and leave the airport's main gate together.
"oh-my-god" is the first thing that comes to mind and bursts out of you. "wow this is amazing, palm trees everywhere and the temperature is fantastic!" you say and Andy can't help but look at you happily. "ok then? where is the journey taking you? haha i mean i can't run away anymore, i'm your prisoner on the island now" you look guilty, and andy laughs.
"we're taking a rental car, first we're heading towards Fajardo. We'll explore the whole island!" Andy waves a car key provocatively and your gaze falls right behind you.
A white GTA Spano is waiting just a few meters away from the two of you. "eeehm....Andy!?"
"yes...?" Andy opens the side of the door for you. "t...that's a monster!" You look at her with wide eyes.
"don't worry, the only one who bites here is me." she grins cheekily and you blink stupidly, only to enter in complete disbelief. "a...all right, andy I haven't put any money aside for my funeral yet" you look at her nervously as she gets in but all andy does is put on her sunglasses, which only makes the situation hotter, and she starts the engine.
"ok ok so how..... long does this baby need to get to 100...?" Andy plays with the engine sound.
"less than three seconds..."
You immediately start sweating and reflexively hold on to something. "don't worry, it's not the first time I've driven a baby like this" you were just about to say something when Andy drives off. "Did I already say that I love you? i...if I die then you've heard it now" Andy just laughs and accelerates a little more. "Tell me, how fast can he actually drive?" You've only just calmed down a bit when Andy puts the car into the next gear.
"let's just find out"
Before you can say anything, it pushes you back into your seat. The road is clear and Andy continues to accelerate while the car purrs dutifully.
"I know the island inside out" Andy drives a good 190 km/h and hesitates for a moment.
"Andy?" you look at her nervously and look straight ahead to see that the road is straight as a die.
"Andy...no...n-" She presses the gas pedal and the car accelerates to almost 340 km/h in a few seconds. "Andy I swear if I die I'll kill you!" Just a little later, she slows down as the road becomes more winding. You both stop at a traffic light, both look at the road and laugh at the same moment. "That was awesome!" Andy gives you a cheeky look and finally drives on. When you arrive, you park in a large front garden with a mosaic stone path. You can't miss the huge villa, which has a huge garden with a maze and pool. "Let's put our stuff away first, then we can go for something to eat." Andy opens the double door and you enter a huge, beautiful hallway with a chandelier.
"oh my god Andy...but...how can you pay for this?"
"let's put it this way. I have a few people i know here" Andy smirks, comes over to you and kisses you passionately. You stow your luggage in the bedroom and go out onto the balcony to enjoy the pool and the different fauna.
You go back into the room and see Andy on her cell phone. "hey...judging by your face, it must have something to do with the 19. Get rid of it! We want to switch off" You go to her, hug her and kiss her neck very gently, eliciting a soft moan from her. "ok ok..stop!" Andy takes you by the shoulders and looks you in the eye.
"Eat! It's almost lunchtime and we haven't eaten since we arrived." You nod. "Do you have any idea where we can go for lunch?"
"So while we're here we should try some specialties. I know a lot of them, my mom also always cooked them." Your eyes are shining. "I'll definitely come back to Seattle with a hundred pounds more" you laugh and finally sit down in the Spano again. "There's a great Puerto Rican chef nearby. He makes one of my favorite dishes!"
When you arrive, sit down outside in one of the more secluded alleyways with a view down towards the beach.
"What would you recommend?" you look at her excitedly. "Mofongo and sorullos for dessert"
"I have no idea what that is, but I have to try it!"
"And two pina coladas to drink" Andy calls the waitress.
You order, enjoy the view and when the food finally arrives you look at Andy in disbelief after the first bite. "wow, that's awesome!"
"Are you tired?" Andy and you walk down to the beach after eating. "hm...maybe a little, but we can still do something else." You take her by the hand and smile shyly. "let's go to the beach" Andy smiles in love and the two of you walk along the beach together. "Is it weird for you to walk with me by the hand?" you don't look at her and Andy smiles slightly. "Never, it's... unusual but it doesn't bother me in any way." You breathe a sigh of relief, which doesn't go unnoticed by Andy, who suddenly pushes you against the wall of the house. "I kiss you in public too and it..." she comes so close to you that you can feel her breath on your lips while her eyes keep switching between your eyes and your lips. "...I don't care what others think...no matter how new it is for me. I love you and you are incredibly important to me..." You gasp at her words and can't help but kiss her lovingly. She clasps your hands tightly, lets go of one and continues walking with you on one hand towards the beach.
Once you arrive at the beach, you take off your shoes and enjoy the warm afternoon sunshine. "I used to come here a lot with my father, visit friends and just relax. But he was always thinking about 19, it was always on his mind. It was hard for him to relax.... just like it's hard for me now...19 is my home. I grew up there, I know everything about this station. I've seen people grow up with that station and now they're veterans at their jobs. That's where I want to be. Unbelievable that it almost burned down." Andy stops and looks into the emptiness of the ocean. "hey...it happened, but everything will be rebuilt. you'll stay captain and things will go back to normal." you give her a kiss on the cheek.
"If the department doesn't blame me for what happened. It's been my job to keep a cool head..."
"Yes, but these were events that you could never influence. We will deal with them if necessary" Andy was just about to say something when you both heard a terrible scream. A woman is running with a lifeless child in her arms and keeps calling for help.
"Oh god Andy!" You both don't hesitate and immediately run to the woman and Andy picks up the child, puts it on the floor and feels for a pulse.
"Señora, ¿qué ha pasado?" (Lady what happened?) Andy says tense.
"Se ha metido una piedra en la boca, quería sacársela pero ya se la ha tragado, ¡oh dios por favor ayúdale!". (He put a stone in his mouth, I wanted to get it out but he's already swallowed it, oh god please help him!)
"¡Todavía tengo un ligero pulso!" (Still got a slight pulse!) Andy picks up the boy, uses the Heimlich and doesn't give up while the mother starts to hyperventilate. You try to calm her down while Andy continues to try to clear the boy's airways.
"damn the stone must be too deep!" Andy takes him by the legs, lets him hang down and keeps tapping hard on the child's back and miraculously the stone finally falls out of his throat. He coughs hard and starts to cry, which makes Andy and you breathe a sigh of relief. The first responders, who you had also called in the meantime, arrive immediately.
"¡que dios os proteja y os de las gracias por siempre! ¡muchas gracias, sin vosotros habría tenido que enterrar a mi propio hijo!" (may god protect you and thank you forever! thank you so much, without you I would have had to bury my own son!) The first responders are impressed and take care of the little boy. The mother hugs Andy and you exuberantly.
"no hay problema... todo lo mejor para ambos" (no problem...all the best to you both)
Andy smiles caringly and you say goodbye. "phew...wow...great performance Captain?" you look at her proudly. "Stop it.." Andy smiles embarrassedly and turns towards the sea.
"Children...are full of surprises. That's why I never wanted any," you say without thinking, amused, but Andy unconsciously flinches at your words. "You...don't want children?"
"Well, I never really thought about it. I don't have great experience with them. And you?" You look at Andy curiously. "So...well with the right partner maybe" Andy's eyes avoid yours. "OK, what's going on. You look like something is going on" you sit down on the sand and enjoy the warm Caribbean wind. "I was once pregnant by a boyfriend at the time. We had been together for a while but the circumstances just weren't right. I...aborted it. I never told him anything about it because if Ryan had wanted it, I wouldn't have it managed to abort..."
"wow..ok. kind of understandable." you let sand trickle between your fingers. "I'm captain now. I just can't think about it at the moment, but it's never out of the question." You look at her thoughtfully and take a deep breath. "Okay, well, if you're sure you want children then why not? You could stay as captain and I could carry the baby. But that's a topic later." You clean your hands.
You both stand up and smile lovingly at each other. You feel something in Andy's eyes that you've never felt from her before, but you can't place it. "i...is everything ok Andy...?"
"yes, everything's fine. we should go back slowly. it'll be dark soon. tomorrow we'll go hiking" you watch her and pause for a moment, the aura that surrounds Andy feels strange, then you run after her.
Back at the villa you sit on the balcony with some tea when Andy comes over and keeps you company. "First day here and already such an action today" you laugh quietly and Andy joins in. "yes, true" Andy drinks her tea, stands up in front of you and tenderly takes your hand. "let's go inside" She slowly leads you to your bedroom, stands in front of you and cups your face with one hand. "You...have been so stubborn..." a kiss on your neck follows. "I? More like..you" You enjoy her touch and inhale sharply. She gently pushes you onto the bed and unzips her robe. "We should really celebrate our arrival here..." Andy teases you with her look.
-----------18+ RAW SMUT (if u wanna skip, feel free and skip to the next chapter)-------
She lets her bathrobe slide off her body. You want to sit up but she leans down towards you and prevents you from moving. She opens your robe as well.
"I'm your captain...you have to obey..." She looks at you teasingly and pins you to the bed by holding your hands, kisses your neck and places delicate kisses all over it. You whimper under each one and get goosebumps all over your body. "Andy....." your vision blurs and your breathing becomes faster. She moves down to your chest, places dirty kisses everywhere, marks every single spot on your body. She lets go of your hands, moves down even deeper and stops right at the sensitive middle between your thighs. She gently strokes her fingers over your clit, kisses it which causes you to reach into her hair out of reflex.
Andy suddenly slows down every single movement which makes you look at her begging.
"Que pasa..?" (what's wrong...?) Andy asks, looking at you teasingly.
"Don't stop...please..." you beg softly, looking at her pathetically. Andy cheekily raises an eyebrow.
"I don't know you like that... begging the captain like that..." She leans down and kisses you, at the same time slowly and carefully slipping one of her fingers inside you. You moan in aggravation and cling tightly to Andy.
"I'm sure there's more..." Andy speeds up her pace a little, making your breathing more ponderous until you moan in an ungodly tone, while you are melting under her sweet breath. Lots of little electric shocks go through your body as you feel yourself almost reaching your limit, Andy continues, nibbling your neck and inserting a second finger. "A...Andy...keep going" You squint your eyes and put your hands over your mouth as you start to moan, but Andy stops you as she holds your hands tightly and you groan out loud.
Andy smiles contentedly and lies down next to you while you struggle to breathe. "ooof... that was wild... pretty naughty of you" You turn and snuggle up to her. "You know that screams revenge," you smile darkly. "mmh...is that the way to talk to your captain....?"
"maybe I don't just want to talk..." you suddenly sit on top of her, holding her tight this time and looking at her challengingly. Your hand wanders between her thighs. "mmh... well, captain. you're pretty impatient, aren't you?" Andy looks at you silently as she bites her lower lip to hold back a moan.
"no...equal rights for all!" You kiss Andy directly on the mouth, so she can no longer suppress a moan, while you start to stroke your fingers more tenderly on her sensitive middle.
The two of you spend almost the whole night making love, turning it into a competition until one of you can't take it anymore and finally gives up.
AN: oops...what just happend here? Sounds almost like a small honeymoon. This was the first Part of the Puerto Rico Trip. Next chapter will also be longer.

one of the more useful resources for understanding different circuit characteristics is brembo, a company that provides braking systems to motogp riders and has these 'identity cards' for different circuits. not always readily available in high definition, but handy to get a better sense of differences between circuits
here's an old identity card from 2016
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
below I've compiled and lightly edited some text from here, here and here provided by brembo about the circuit - there's a fair bit of overlap, but just enough unique information to make it a worthwhile exercise. I also chucked in one clarification from the motomatters preview for motegi, which you should read anyway. where there's conflicting numbers, for obvious reasons I've gone for the more recent ones. rating systems for these have also changed (apparently, in 2016 only one of the corners was considered 'highly challenging', but by 2019 five are considered 'very demanding' - make of that what you will). so if you spot slight discrepancies, that's probably why
The MotoGP bikes use the street circuit, which stands out for having very few fast corners and many slow ones interspersed with medium length straights. There are seven corners that the bikes have to take going less than 100 km/h (62 mph). Right from its first World Championship debut in 1999, the circuit has always been considered among the most challenging on brakes due to the significant amount of curves taken in second gear and how difficult it is to cool down the discs between one braking section and another. The perfect surface provides good grip levels and improves the amount of braking torque discharged to the ground resulting in increased stress that the brakes are put under. The Grand Prix regulations approved by the International Motorcycling Federation allow MotoGP bikes to use carbon discs with diameters of 320 mm, 340 mm, and 355 mm. However, for Motegi, Buriram, Sepang, and the Red Bull Ring, in dry race conditions, riders are prohibited from using the 320 mm discs. At these tracks, they must choose between the 340 mm and 355 mm discs. Nobody uses the 340 mm disks any more - everyone having moved on to the 355mm discs which this generation of MotoGP machines need to get themselves stopped. This rule was developed in collaboration with Brembo, which, based on data, demonstrated that brakes are particularly stressed on these tracks. As the disc diameter increases, radial heat dispersion improves. To facilitate heat dissipation and increase the surface area for air exchange, MotoGP riders have been equipped with finned discs, featuring 355 mm fins, since 2022. In 2017, despite the rain falling for the entire race, the top 9 finishers and 13 of the top 15 used carbon discs. Merit also of the Brembo technicians who assisted them on the track, explaining to them the methods for the correct use of carbon in the rain.
Tumblr media
According to Brembo technicians who work closely with all MotoGP riders, the 4.8 km long Mobility Resort Motegi is categorized as highly demanding on the brakes. On a difficulty scale of 1 to 6, it rates a 6, largely due to the abundance of slow corners that hinder the cooling of braking systems. Riders use the brakes 10 times per lap for a total of 33 seconds, with deceleration exceeding 175 km/h during half of these braking zones.
Tumblr media
Brake Use During the GP From the starting line to the chequered flag, each rider uses his brakes for more than 13 minutes. The track contains 7 corners that are taken at less than 100 km/h, preventing the MotoGP bikes from reaching very fast speeds and thus reducing deceleration peaks: the average deceleration is limited to just 1.17 g. Since there are three braking sections of modest length (between 35 and 92 meters each, or 115-302 feet), the mean deceleration is not very high; adding up all the force applied on the brake lever by one rider from the starting line to the chequered flag, the sum is more than 1.2 tons. But this is still higher than that registered by a Honda Civic Type R when braking from 100 to 0 km/h. Summing up all of the force applied by a rider on the Brembo brake lever from the starting line to the checkered flag, the result comes in at more than 930 kg (2,050 lbs). Of the 10 braking sections on the circuit, five are considered very demanding on the brakes, while two are of medium difficulty and three are light. On those five highly demanding sections, riders apply the brakes for more than four seconds. This explains the 33 seconds in which braking systems are being operated per lap, which is equal to 32% of the entire race, one of the highest percentages for the World Championship.
Tumblr media
The Most Challenging Zones The one that puts the most stress on the braking systems and the riders (1.5 G in deceleration) is the 90° corner at turn 11. The MotoGP bikes arrive at it going 308 km/h (191 mph) and then brake for 5.1 seconds to slow to 86 km/h (53 mph). In this short time span, the riders apply a 5.7 kg (12.6 lbs) load on the lever while travelling 250 meters (820 feet) and the pressure of the Brembo HTC 64T brake fluid gets to nearly 12.3 bar. Also at turns 1, 3 and 5 the deceleration measures 1.5 G. Turn 3 in particular stands out for the force demanded of the riders (5.1 kg or 11.2 lbs load on the lever) and the brake fluid (11 bar) in order to slow down from 277 km/h (172 mph) to 93 km/h (58 mph) in 4.2 seconds and 202 meters (663 feet). The measurements are more contained for turn 5, but still they are higher than the average of the other corners on the track: The bikes have a braking space of 216 meters (709 feet) and 4.8 seconds to reduce their speeds by 194 km/h (121 mph), from 271 km/h (168 mph) to 77 km/h (48 mph). Also Turn 1, because it requires the riders to brake for 4.6 seconds and 225 metres. Three times the bikes brake in under 50 metres: at Curve 6 the bikes decelerate from 200 to 183 km/h in 47 metres; at Curve 8 they go from 133 to 112 km/h in 41 metres and at Curve 12 they slow from 167 to 143 km/h in 40 metres, the same length as about twenty Dance Dance Revolution platforms.

The Audi Q8 comes in a few different styles or trims: the Sportback, Premium, and S- line, each offering a variety of performance levels and capabilities. • On-Road Price: The total sum shown shall include taxes, registration fees as well as insurance. In Chandigarh, the on-road price is approximately ₹1.15 crore to ₹1.75 crore depending on Leabhar’s variant selection and other options
• Insurance: As Q8 is a luxurious automobile, anticipate the cost of comprehensive insurance to be higher than that of an ordinary car. It is prudent to search for different providers to get a better price.

Sunday 3 July 2022
Three days in and this is my first post! Alan and Jess are moving to Perth to start a new chapter and Jess’ father (also Alan) and I are driving over with them.
Day 1 ended at Murray Bridge in South Australia and Day 2 at Streaky Bay. Tonight we are at Border Village, just steps from the quarantine station on the WA border and a giant kangaroo - and in a time warp that a Dr Who scriptwriter would be proud of. This roadhouse stop is 45 minutes behind WA and 45 ahead of SA. That means that the time zone we are in is set to the quarter hour. This only affects a stretch of 340 kilometres along the Eyre Highway and is very rare. Apparently this came about as the result of a compromise back in the days when the Eucla Telegraph station was operational. It took an hour and a half to pass messages between each capital city so they split the difference. We have racked up 1964 kms - only 1440 to go.
The Murray Bridge leg is a blur to me now. Our first pitstop was in Ararat, our second at Nhill and we arrived at our destination just in time to see the old one-lane bridge we were crossing and find our way to the hotel bar before the sun went down. Lured by a river view and the idea of stretching our legs we trekked cross country to the Community Club. No lights on the river unfortunately but the food didn’t disappoint. The raffle draw was a highlight also. Winners spun a wheel to claim their prize, which more often than not landed on a stubby holder or a $5 voucher. This procession of winners looked like they knew what to expect. We were up and out of the Bridgeport Motel the next morning before daylight to get some kms on the board.
The Gawler bakery provided a surprisingly good breakfast. Driving though the Clare Valley brought back happy memories of the cycling David and I did along the Riesling Rail Trail some years ago. Everything was just where we left it, including the Sunrise Hotel. We drove alongside the Ghan railway line into the Spencer Gulf, stopping for lunch at a little shop in the city centre that promised home cooked meals. One of the great things about travelling is that eventually every experience ends up reminding you of something else. This little place that looked more like someone’s house than a cafe, reminded me of a restaurant David and I stumbled upon in Portugal that really was someone’s lounge room. Despite not being able to read any of the items on the menu, we ended up with the best chicken and chips we had ever had.
Streaky Bay came into view not a minute too soon for Al and I. Not as salubrious as the Bridgeport but the colonial looking West End hotel facing the bay had everything we needed, including a continental breakfast the next morning after a stroll along the pier at sunrise. Streaky Bay, home of the Wirangu people, is a coastal town on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia just off the Flinders Highway. It is the centre of an agricultural district with established fishing and tourism industries. The streaks Matthew Flinders saw in the water when he named it are now thought to be the result of oils released by certain species of seaweed in the bay. Dinner at Drift was the best so far. It had to be as it started with a dozen oysters. As elsewhere on the Eyre Peninsula, Streaky Bay and nearby Elliston were the scene of some terrible conflicts with Aboriginal people.
We had less driving to do today so allowed ourselves the luxury of a bowl of coco pops and a sunrise (in reverse order) before hitting the road. Streaky Bay was asleep when we bought the makings of lunch to enjoy when the opportunity arose. Fortunately Jess and her dad found a turn off to the coast and with some strategic manoeuvring we managed to create some tasty and rustic ham cheese and salad rolls (if you count cucumber as a salad). The expanse of the Great Australian Bight was something to see. Limestone rock underneath us and dainty little pig-face and leptospermum plants emerging from lesser trod sandy paths. Very lovely. On the Eastern end of the Nullarbor today, we experienced more of the short sharp rains that seemed to be the handiwork of just one single cloud, soon outrun by the Corolla doing 110.
Tomorrow we head for Norseman.

Putin's Russia has reduced the significance of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars road project. Georgia may remain on the side of the North-South international transport corridor and the New Silk Road
Tumblr media
Deputy Prime Ministers of Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan - Alexey Overchuk, Mher Grigoryan and Shahin Mustafayev held a trilateral meeting dedicated to the details of unblocking transport communications in the region. The decision in principle to unblock was made during the negotiations between Vladimir Putin, Nikol Pashinyan and Ilham Aliyev, which took place on January 11 in Moscow.
We are talking about the Nakhichevan railroad, which in Soviet times connected the Masis station, located near Yerevan, the Azerbaijani city of Nakhichevan (the capital of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic) and Baku. The terms “Nakhichevan corridor” and “Meghri corridor” (after the name of the Meghri region of Armenia, through which the road passes) are also used.
During the Soviet era, this route was used for significant regional and international traffic between Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, as well as Iran and Turkey. However, after the end of the Armenian-Azerbaijani war in 1993, the movement along the route was completely stopped.
In fact, for Armenia this meant the introduction of a land blockade, since the Nakhichevan railway was the only land transport communication between Russia and Armenia.
The Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic, the landlocked exclave of Azerbaijan, also found itself in a partial blockade. After the cessation of traffic on the Nakhichevan road, land communication of the autonomy with other regions of Azerbaijan is carried out either through the territory of Iran in the south, or through the territory of Turkey in the west.
Thus, the decision to resume traffic on the Nakhichevan railway will help overcome the regional blockade and will have a beneficial effect on all states of the region, creating incentives for them for further development.
Armenian cargo will be able to be directly delivered to Russia (and this is the largest importer of goods from Armenia) by rail through the territory of Azerbaijan, and then - Dagestan. In a broader sense, this guarantees Armenia's direct access to the single market of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
In addition, Armenia can also receive a railway connection with Iran. Earlier, plans were voiced to build a new branch to the Iranian city of Marand through the Meghri region of Armenia, which could become part of the North-South international transport corridor.
The investment company Rasia FZE from the UAE showed interest in the project back in 2013, and a free economic zone was even launched in the Armenian Meghri in 2017, designed to stimulate cross-border trade. However, despite these steps, the project was frozen due to high costs. Now he is again acquiring features of realism.
The restart of the Nakhichevan Corridor is also beneficial for Russia, which will receive an alternative land route to the markets of the Middle East. First of all, to Turkey, with which Russia's trade turnover is steadily growing. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has already made it clear that Moscow will continue to develop direct Armenian-Azerbaijani transport links. Note that the Armenian railways have been under the control of Russian Railways since 2008, and the "Nakhichevan Corridor" itself, according to the trilateral agreement, will be guarded by Russian border guards.
In the future, there will be an opportunity for direct communication between Turkey and Azerbaijan, which have already announced the construction of an extension of the Nakhichevan railway to the Turkish city of Ygdir with a length of 230 km. The investment is estimated at $ 270 million.
Today the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway is operating, which connects the two states through the territory of Georgia, but the Nakhichevan road will be about 340 km shorter. Reducing the distance for transporting goods and passengers will reduce transport costs, speed up bilateral trade and increase tourist flow.
The new road "Nakhichevan - Ygdyr - Kars" will be connected with the railway line, which continues to Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan. Thus, through Nakhichevan, Turkey will receive direct access to the Caspian Sea, as well as to the Turkic world in Central Asia.
Creation of a full-fledged "Nakhichevan corridor", which in the future can be integrated into the international transport corridor "North-South" and "New Silk Road", will give an impetus to the rapid development of Azerbaijani autonomy. Therefore, regional players are already showing interest in its economic fate.
Thus, Turkey plans to lay a new gas pipeline between Ygdir and Nakhichevan, which was previously supplied with gas at the expense of Iran. At the same time, Iran is ready to resume construction on the Iranian-Azerbaijani border, on the Araks river, the Khodaafarin dam and two hydroelectric power plants - Ordubad and Marazad.
The competition between Iran and Turkey for Nakhichevan is likely to only intensify. Earlier, for almost three decades (since the blocking of Nakhichev Nsk railway in 1993), the logistics of the Azerbaijani autonomy was carried out mainly through Iranian territory. Now, with the emergence of new roads and a gas pipeline, Iran will suffer not only economic, but also geopolitical losses in the region.
The new Rasht-Astara road, which should also become part of the North-South corridor, can provide a kind of compensation for Iran. The construction of the road has already been credited to Iran by official Baku in the amount of $ 500 million.
Apart from Iran, Georgia, which is now playing the role of a transit hub in the South Caucasus, may also be a victim. After all, Armenian cargoes going to Russia now pass through the territory of Georgia. However, the appearance of an alternative road through Azerbaijan and Dagestan will sharply reduce the importance of the Georgian Military Road.
The weak hopes of official Tbilisi that the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars road should be developed as an alternative to the Nakhichevan corridor will obviously not come true. And not only for economic reasons, but also for geopolitical reasons. After all, initially Russia tried to reduce the importance of Georgia in the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars road project. Having concluded an agreement with Baku and Ankara on the transportation of goods to Turkey using this road, Moscow immediately offered to build an additional station on Turkish territory to replace the Georgian one.
Now the Nakhichevan corridor, if it develops towards Ygdyr, makes the transit function of Georgia in the region virtually insignificant. However, this will partly hit Russia itself. In recent years, the authorities of North Ossetia, through which the Armenian and Georgian cargo flows, have developed a number of projects aimed at increasing the transit role of the Georgian Military Highway - expanding the Verkhniy Lars checkpoint, creating a branch of the Armenian Embassy in Vladikavkaz. In addition, a new bypass road will be built in Vladikavkaz, designed to relieve the city from transit trucks heading to the Russian-Georgian border. Restarting the Nakhichevan Corridor may call into question the need for all these infrastructure projects.
What made Russia decide to abandon the road through Georgia? Georgia's pro-Western course and the buildup of military cooperation with NATO led Russia to look for alternative trade routes. Because of its guided course, Georgia risks becoming isolated, which will once again negatively affect its economy.
