Azalin Reviews: Darklord Hazlik
Tumblr media
Domain: Hazlan Domain Formation: 714 BC Power Level: 💀💀💀💀⚫ Sources: Ravenloft Gazetteer Vol 1 (3e), Ravenloft 3.0, Secrets of the Dread Realms (3e), Realm of Terror (2e), Domains and Denizens (2e) CW: Genocide, homophobic hate crimes
Disclaimer: I have been reviewing the Darklords in order of Domain Formation and Hazlik coming up during pride month feels wrong to me but then again hate crimes are real and those in the queer community face them far too often. The older material on Hazlik was questionable, at best, but who can blame the man for wanting revenge against those who hated him because he was talented and gay?
Hazlik, the aging chaotic little "Red Wizard” and Darklord of Hazlan, is a man of many contradictions ruling over a land riddled with ancient magics and straggled with oppression.
Hazlan is an arid land of cliffs and canyons with sparse vegetation where landslides and tornadoes are common hazards. The populace is severely divided with the Rashemani barely having enough to survive on, while the Mulan lavish themselves in luxury. Keeping the oppressed oppressed is the only way the Mulan maintain rule over the Rashemani as they are severely outnumbered.
It should come as little surprise, given his moniker, that Hazlik comes from the world of Toril and was once a Red Wizard of Thay. Typically having a malevolent nature, these “Red Wizards” devoted themselves to the mastery of a particular school of magic. Hazlik’s chosen school is evocation.
Hazlik’s downfall came from his own ambitious nature. He rose too fast amongst the ranks of his fellows and made too many enemies in doing so. One such rival and enemy, the necromancer Thantosya, became his undoing. Though Hazlik attempted to hide his desire for Thantosya’s lover (Ordiab), the two must have found him out.
Ordiab seduced Hazlik and when discovered amidst their passion, Hazlik’s enemies (lead by Thantosya) accused him of assaulting Ordiab. They captured the little evocator, tattooed his head and chest with arcane symbols of femininity (which Hazlik viewed as humiliating) and cast him out of their order then burnt down his estate. They were quite thorough and one wonders why they did not simply kill Hazlik and be done with it.
It’s always curious who our Tormentors single out as Darklords. Thantosya and Ordiab’s crimes were far greater than Hazlik’s, but I wager that having an obsessive nature has something to do with it and Hazlik’s obsession with revenge must have drawn them in.
He spent his forced seclusion on magical experimentation and research in hopes of finding a way to utterly destroy those who ostracized him. I’m not one to hold much weight on chance, but call it what you will, one day Hazlik came upon Thantosya and Ordiab in a small glade while he was gathering ingredients.
He ambushed the lovers, killed Ordiab and forced Thantosya to drink his blood before killing her as well. And with this act of vengeance, the Mists took Hazlik into the Nightmare Lands. There he found himself once more tormented and powerless by those that had tattooed him. He fled back into the Mists and Hazlan formed.
Before the Grand Conjunction, Hazlik was obsessed with escaping Hazlan so he could obtain revenge against those who humiliated him. The death of Thantosya and Ordiab were never enough, he wanted vengeance against them all. Because of his hatred of the wizards who humiliated him, he forbade the practice of the arcane arts in Hazlan, except for himself, of course. Blinded by his hatred for the necromancer that led to his downfall, he has a severe disdain for undead servants and necromancy in general. Well, there’s no accounting for taste…
After the Grand Conjunction and Hazlik's near escape of these misty realms, Hazlik’s views changed significantly. For one, he opened the Red Academy to teach the arcane arts. It is rumored that he saw a glimpse of Toril and his enemies thriving there before the Mists took him once more. Being taken a second time, Hazlik convinced himself that he would never escape the Mists. That’s all it took? Quitter.
Hazlik’s views of magic are in direct opposition to the Church of the Lawgiver which thrives amongst the Hazlani. This church’s doctrine views the practice of the arcane arts as blasphemous. Ridiculous. I will always put more faith in my own knowledge than some ‘greater’ and mysterious power these so called priests worship. Especially in these lands where the gods are clearly absent.
Mostly, Hazlik ignores the church. Perhaps for his own purposes in that their suppression of magical practices by all but Hazlik’s chosen apprentices allows him to study his art in peace and without fear of an ambitious mage attempting to overthrow him? Or perhaps I am giving him too much credit here…
Hazlik sees the Rashemani as being beneath his notice and believes the all Mulan deserve absolute suffering for what they did to him in Toril. Yet, he appoints Mulan leaders to rule settlements in his steed as he ignores the demands that rulership placed upon his shoulders.
Hazlik’s current plans revolve around his favored apprentice, Eleni. For without a new body and his refusal to use Necromancy, he will eventually die of old age and considering he is already in his 80s, well…He plans on taking control of Eleni’s body before that happens so he may carry out his rather elaborate plan for revenge. No longer is he satisfied by destroying those that humiliated him, but he seeks to slay every single Mulan in existence. He spends countless hours researching rituals that will allow him to do just that, targeting the Mulan in Hazlan and in any realm they exist. A bit extreme for a few tattoos and a broken heart…
Hazlik is still tormented by nightmares of his enemies. So frightened by these visions, he spends much of his energy attempting to find magical means of staying awake, but he never succeeds for long and the longer he stays awake he begins to experience waking nightmares, seeing enemies and rivals everywhere.
Despite his misguided disdain for Necromancy, Hazlik is one of the most powerful wizards in Ravenloft and through constant experimentation has created some unique items such as the vat of living clay that allows the creation of a monster sculped from clay every day. He can sense any spell cast within his borders and in most cases identify it. Additionally, our Tormentors were so kind to gift him with an amulet that, upon his destruction, will store his soul within so he is not easily defeated.

Unlike Faces of Sigil, Faces of Evil: The Fiends (1997) is NOT an NPC book detailing noteworthy fiends. I got this one not too long ago and never really looked through it because I am ambivalent to NPC books. Boy was that a mistake. This book is awesome!
Basically, it is a guide to the lower planes. The box sets dedicated to the Outer Planes largely focused on place, while this books gives a thorough accounting of inhabitants. Devils and demons, sure, but also hags, Yugoloths, Gehreleths and all sorts of other. It is in the same vein as the later Guide to Hell (1999) for 2e and the Fiendish Codex books for 3e. I love those books! I love this one too! There are zero mechanics here, just lore, all of it interesting, all of it still usable — unlike the Guide to Hell and the Fiendish Codex, which feel more tied to their specific editions. This one is all diabolical flavor.
Interior art is all Adam Rex, who is sort of the unsung illustrator who picked up a lot of the Planescape art commissions as DiTerlizzi became unavailable. He hews close to the established TD style of the setting while giving his subjects their own energy. I dig it. Robh Ruppel did the cover. I generally like Ruppel’s work but this one is a bit confounding. That dude’s mouth is distracting and I am just not sure what is going on here. Is the ponytail guy a sacrifice? I feel like we should have a big demon front and center for this one.

Someone asked for the Inevitables from 3e converted to 5e, so here ya go! Yes, I realize the Marut now exists in 5e, but I wanted to be thorough and the new Marut is very different. I wanted these guys to be as close as possible to both theme/playstyle as well as CR, although I took liberties in order to balance them out such as extra actions and whatnot.
I will try and get these into a text post tomorrow for those that don’t want to save the images.

(Spoilers below for the magnus archives)
So I’m preparing to run death house/curse of strahd and I was researching if the guide to ravenloft would be of any use to developing the world and the story
Found a Reddit thread where they mentioned a set of volumes that were around in 3e
I managed to find the first one…It’s very cool and I’m honestly impressed with the amount of details in it
But the funniest thing to me is the narrator (it’s written as formal research reports) reminds me so much of Jon from the magnus archives:
-skeptic
-rooted very much in logic/practical reasoning (i.e. evidence, thorough investigations)
-not great at socializing/comes off distant and uninterested in others
-doesn’t completely know who his boss is
-believes who he thinks his boss is to be evil and/or have not good motives
-writes off the stories he gets as just legends and/or the people are simply stupid and obviously don’t know what they’re talking about
-is a smart aleck, especially to boss
-for some unknown reason, was specifically picked by boss to do job
Maybe it’s a trope or cliché for horror but I find this incredibly amusing

Hey dreamer, i saw the person talking about 4-3e dragging vs 0-2 for grinding and did some quick maths about which is more efficient TLDR its 4-3e. (the current 1.5x exp shouldnt make much of a difference since it applies to both maps). Above echelon used for the experiment. Also am on mobile so might not be that presentable
4-3e - 24 mre 48 ammo per run Each battle gave approx 444x2.5, 4 battles for a total 4440exp per run
0-2 - 218 mre 340 ammo per run Each battle gave 735x2.5, 5 battles for total 9187exp per run.
So 0-2 gives a bit over twice as much exp per run, but using the example echelon uses 7.75 times more resources. In terms of resource efficiency 4-3E seems to be the winner, though takes more time to get the same exp. Also if you are disposing every tdoll that drops you get roughly half the resources back on 4-3e.
NOTES the above results will change depending on which tdolls are used, for MG which take a lot of ammo dragging is recommended otherwise enjoy having no ammo.
0-2 has a much better core drop rate though 4-3e isnt terrible since you run it so many times
Also my understanding of grinding is you can be fast and use a lot of resources, or go slow and be more efficient. Depends what you prefer.
Holy Moly, hey, thanks a trillion bunches for the nuanced and thorough maths! It’s really cool of you!
@strayed-path you were Correct! It’s not just more efficient resourcewise thanks to corpse dragging, it’s MUCH more efficient. So YEAH HEY PEOPLE if you’re not in a hurry and can corpse drag, 4-3E is your ticket to huge muscles.

CLASSIFIED DOCUMENT CLEARANCE LEVEL 5-A                                                WEREWOLVES
0-BRIEF
Werewolves and Lycans are two unique subsets of the shapeshifter class of abilities, infections, and enchantments. Wild populations of both species are being monitored on all major continents. Removal of these animals is not recommended except for in cases of rampages, multiple sightings, poor assessment, or acceptable request for study subjects. Additional documentation noted. All documentation classified. See Document C-LR-H1882 for Lycan brief. The werewolf is a quadruped that depending on species and type may often be passed off as a large northern-type dog, or even a wolf hybrid in legal areas. These animals are variable in temperament, but often exhibit some instincts of the natural wolf species. Most seem to gravitate to areas already populated with others of this species even in situations where they do not interact with their peers and remain singular.
1-PHYSICAL
CHANGE 1a The ‘shift’ of a werewolf is reportedly painful and causes a drain on the body’s natural resources. Studies have shown that repeated changes without a high protein caloric intake of 5,000> will cause high levels of aggression, deterioration, and eventual heart failure and death. A werewolf’s voracious appetite must be maintained in order to keep the animal from entering starvation and awakening survival instincts. Reports have indicated that newly infected without the support of an experienced werewolf are more likely to ‘fight’ the associated hunger. These specimens are also most likely to consume non-infected family members, neighbors, and pets. See attached briefing S-16 for strategies concerning such events. TYPE 1b Historical documents transcribe much more specific differences in regional werewolf species. The ease of modern travel has caused a rapid muddling of the species. Agents have observed signs of crossbreeding in the field, such as heavier winter coats on desert type specimens. See document C-W-22RA for the risk assessment report on the isolated ‘purity packs’. However, the Agency still still recognizes the four main types and requires all agents include species type in all reports. See document C-W-03S for more detail.
ARCTIC - The largest of the types. Agency Historians have concluded Arctic Werewolves are the likely cause of the ‘direwolf’ legend. Best captured when in a human state to large size and muscular statures. Arctic’s have an excellent sense of smell and excel in cold weather conditions to -40C.  DESERT - Small to medium in size, Desert types are easily distinguished by their larger, pointed ears and ‘silky’ coats. This is a slimmer species noted for their agility and speed coupled with an exceptional heat tolerance. There has been some consideration given to crossbreeding Arctic to Desert for a dual-purpose Ranger, but nothing has moved to trials at the writing of this report.  FOREST - The most varied of any type given the range of climates in which they are found. Common factors include a double coat, exceptional night vision, and stamina. Theories that the Forest Type is founded from a crossbreeding of Arctic and Desert types has not yet been proven. Capture method may vary per individual subject. TROPIC - Extinct. Very little is known about this type. Most historical documentation from pirates is badly damaged. Expeditions sent to prove a theory that a small, isolated pack still lives on a remote tropical island in the Pacific have not returned.
2-MENTAL
URBAN 2a Contrary to previous reports, urban environments have not shown to cause an increase in abnormal behavior in werewolves. Urban werewolves may still attempt to hunt and chase small animals in even in populated areas. This is considered a non-issue, as the infection cannot be transferred to non-humanoid species and primary focus has not been observed shifting towards humans with an abundance of small game such as squirrel.  While all types have been shown to instinctively seek out the familial pack bond that has been observed in wild natural wolf populations, werewolves in urban environments find partners at a faster rate than their rural counterparts. Studies have concluded that since the majority of urban werewolves settle in large cities, the anonymity and abundance of night life allows for the pack-instinct to flourish with greater opportunity for intercourse and bonding. RURAL 2b Rural werewolves have the highest percentage of established family packs. Current studies are underway on the theory that a large percentage of rural werewolf offspring migrates to larger cities after maturity, as rural werewolf populations also have the highest percentage of lone individuals in any category in both males and females. Reports from field agents have all concluded that while the risk of outbreak is higher in a lone wolf, tracking and observation until the subject in question has settled into a pack-bond situation is most effective for efficient capture of live specimens. Chronically solitary werewolves are often anti-social males, recommendation for such specimens is live capture or neutralization.  INSTINCT 2c Werewolves of all types share instinctual similarities with natural wolves. A large pack will include grandparents, parents, and their offspring. Power is shared between the adults, the ‘Alpha Hierarchy’ is rarely seen in werewolf packs. See  Document C-LR-H1882 for more information on Alpha Hierarchy. Occasionally, multiple werewolf families will congregate or settle in close proximity to one another and co-exist peacefully for multiple generations. Hunting instinct varies per individual subject, but most display a natural aptitude in tracking making them highly effective in pursuit and discovery. Chasing and subduing game and other supernaturals almost always requires training and technique refinement, but steps are being taken towards inborn skills. Marking varies depending on the individual. Most will partake in rolling but some young males may partake in marking in outdoor environments. Recommendation is standard training procedures to discourage marking behaviors. HUMAN TRAITS 2d Research has proven that the base human traits of the individual are amplified after successful infection and survival of first change (see subsection 3c). In-house Agency psychological testing is mandatory for all subjects considered for infection and assigned Class Type. Psychopaths are immediately referred to the Hunter Class regardless of scoring in other areas during testing.
3-INFECTION
TRANSMISSION 3a Transmission of the werewolf virus is most commonly though a saliva-blood contact during an attack. Successful transmissions from attacks are high due to the stress on the immune system from multiple wounds and bleeding. This allows the virus to take a firm hold within the immune system itself, initiating a rapid healing response and drastically increased appetite. Blood-Blood transmission is far more rare in cases of spontaneous infection, but have been recorded in historical documents. Consuming any part of the animal raw carries a small risk of infection, however the possibility is increased by the presence of wounds in or around the mouth or ulcers of the stomach. Thorough cooking renders meat safe to consume, however the brain should never be eaten. VIRAL LOAD 3b The viral load of the werewolf is critical for successful transmission of the virus. Loads are lowest directly after a full moon phase of any kind. During this period transmission rate is <1%, normalizing after a week for an transmission rate of <3%. During a standard full moon viral load uptakes moderately. Transmission rates in mauling situations are as high as 84%. However, in standard research settings with average healthy subjects yielded successful transmission rates of 46% with saliva-blood transmission and 66% with blood-blood transmissions. During key lunar cycles viral loads uptake severely. Transmission rates in mauling situations are 100%. Research settings yielded 92% transmission in saliva-blood and 98% in blood-blood. Blue moon cycles, blood moons, and harvest moons have all been proven to cause this viral load reaction. SYMPTOMS 3c Rapid healing is the first sign of a successful transmission. A small test cut should be made on the subject 15 minutes prior to transmission and monitored for 30 minutes post. If the wound does not close in this period, the transmission was unsuccessful. Research has shown that it takes approximately twenty-eight days for the virus to take full hold in the new host’s body, regardless of key lunar cycles during that time. While the virus is establishing itself, the subject will experience several more symptoms: Increased appetite, cravings for raw meat, fever, nausea, vomiting, sneezing, runny nose, itchiness, mood swings, allergies. SURVIVAL 3d Survival rates of first-change werewolves turned in spontaneous situations is as low as 8%. The leading cause of death is heart failure due to insufficient protein and calorie intake during the incubation period. Second cause is death by family member, neighbor, or police. Third is hit-and-run vehicle accidents. In controlled settings, survival of first-change werewolves is guaranteed with use of safe rooms, restraints, and calming medications. ALLERGIES 3e Werewolves are contain a minor genetic flaw that causes allergies in all types. All Handlers are required to complete a course detailing allergens their animal may encounter. A. napellus (Wolfsbane/Monkshood) - Consumption of a small amount causes severe gastrointestinal distress in human-phased werewolves, Larger amounts can cause hallucinations, aggression, uncontrolled shifts, seizures, and death. Consumption of a small amount by a werewolf in animal status will cause drooling, pacing, and listlessness. It will be unable to return to human status for a week or longer depending on amount ingested. Larger amounts consumed during animal status will result in permanent animal status. A. napellus is a controlled substance only for use as ordered by the Director. Handlers found in possession of any part of the plant or extract of one will be sentenced to death. Silver - Pure silver causes severe burns in both human and animal status werewolves. Wounds containing silver will not heal and fester if left unattended. Lower content silver causes a stinging or burning sensation, the severity of which depending on the silver content. Silver is only permitted for use during training and by Handlers with Hunters. Coffee, Chocolate - Small to moderate amounts by human or animal status werewolves can cause hyperactivity, chewing, chasing of small animals, and howling. Larger amounts can cause the above symptoms with the inclusion of vomiting.
4-BREEDING
CROSSTYPES 4a Tracking and research has yielded promising results towards increasing efficiency in breeding for military applications. Werewolf females are only fertile for a short period between January and April, however the offspring has been shown superior to infected subjects in Training and Behavioral Control. See Document C-W-72B for details. Werewolves crossed with Humans yields a twenty-five percent (25%) chance of a Lycanthrope (bipedal), twenty-five percent (25%) chance of a human carrier, and a fifty percent (50%) chance of a non-carrier human offspring. Werewolves crossed with Human Carriers will yield either Lycanthrope or carrier offspring. Werewolves crossed with Werewolves will almost always produce Werewolf offspring, with the small chance for a Human Carrier offspring to occur. Werewolf/Lycan crossings are banned.

Nehemiah 10
As of this point, there remain no more than one chapter for each book not yet read. There are 14 chapters left to read, 2 in Torah, 5 in the former prophets, 2 in the prophets, and 5 in the remainder of the writings, an interesting accident.
As I complete each book, I will put it into a pdf form in English only for reading and correction by whoever would like to read. There is a comment ability, though I haven't used it. But comments can be left on individual posts also. If anyone is interested.
The last verses of this chapter seem a very thorough summary of the religious structures of the rebuilt temple and the land.

Nice concept lousy execution. I've been a fan of superheroes as far back as I can remember. My first RPG was the basic set for Go to Amazon
A very good game, but not for beginners The game is good, it is well written and has only a few small errors (there is an errata sheet correcting those out there somewhere. However, the powers section requires a bit of work if you want to do anything past the basics. Unlike previous versions of Mutants and Masterminds (upon which this is based), this version mainly gives power effects and expects the player to design their powers using those. This requires imagination, the ability to calculate things, and a bit of maturity not to get out of hand. It is very good for experienced players who can handle it, but is probably not the best game for starting to learn how to play. Go to Amazon
Arrived in great condition, through and perfect for any RP-er I recently started DM-ing a superhero-themed game, and let me tell you, even if you're not using any DC heroes; this is a fantastic world-building and point-system guide. It includes virtually any power you'd ever want to include in game, as well as drawbacks and limits that are necessary for a power-themed session to go smoothly. It has a great way of breaking down powers you can have as a super into "abilities, powers, and skills" categories, which are great for distinction between skill heroes like Nightwing vs. power-heavy ones like Superman. AND it has a glossary of several popular hero sheets, so you can go toe-to-toe with Batman if you're feeling saucy. Go to Amazon
DC Adventures (M&M 3E) Perhaps the best Super RPG in history. This is one of the best systems I have ever read. Second only to the original DC Heroes, which depicts comic book heroes a bit better, but does not hold up as well when dealing with heroes of various power levels. Batman in DC Adventures can hang with Superman more easily than he can in DC Heroes. I thought the second edition of M&M was just as good as the Hero System. The Hero System was perhaps more thorough, but you could make anything with M&M 2E you could make with Hero, and the simplicity streamlined rules of M&M 2E more than made up for thoroughness of the much more complicated system that Hero is. To be honest, I don't find Hero that complicated, though you can definitely see how it is, when introducing it to a new set of players. When I read DC Adventures using M&M 3E, I wasn't sure it could beat M&M 2E, but it more than beat it, it fixed nearly all the problems I had with 2E. Some optional rules from 3E Game Masters Guide and adding in a few easily adaptable optional rules from 2E's Mastermind's Manual (namely the tactical movement, and perhaps the damage roll) and the only thing I have heard any complaints about is the damage system. (And that is only from one person who likes to roll damage instead of resisting it. Again, the damage roll variant from M&M 2E MM may even fix this. Go to Amazon
Nicely done I can't really argue with previous reviews here, and would add that the layout confusion in this book isn't really "fixed" in the actual M&M 3E book either - this looks to be laid out almost the same way but with DC artwork and examples, and a slightly more polished appearance. Go to Amazon
Neat but complicated Love the idea, but the combat system is just too complicated and it makes it a little hard to have fun with it. It just takes too long to learn. Call me a casual, but after studying it extensively and still having trouble figuring out certain mechanics during game play really hampers fun. Go to Amazon
A good game for players and GMs who enjoy system mastery. Green Ronin did a great job of translating the d20 mechanic into a system ... Not just the best DC roleplaying game-- one of the best RPG's ever! I wouldn't not recommend it. Five Stars A Must Have Fantastic Book Five Stars Strong addition I Liked This Book So Much, I Bought Many More Fantastic!!!!
