Season 3 Rewatch Drabbles: 3x17 The Jolly Roger.

Summary:  A series of 100-500 word drabbles to accompany my    rewatch of season 3 of Once Upon a Time.  There will be a drabble–either a deleted scene, a “fix it” fic or a character musing for each episode of the season.  Focus will be on Emma, Henry, the Charmings and Killian–with an emphasis on Captain Swan’s epic love story.

Note: There were many directions I could have gone with this Killian-centric episode, but given the recent passing of Chris Gauthier, it seemed appropriate to write a Killian-Smee centered “drabble”.

Killian looked out across the sea at the Storybrooke harbor.  He’d always found that looking at the horizon brought him peace and comfort, but none was to be had today.

How long could he keep the truth of his activities during the lost year from Emma?  How would she react, how would everyone react when they learned of the choices he’d made in order to take back his ship?

“Captain Hook!” he heard from behind him. “Captain!”

The guilt deepend as he glanced at Smee.  Always the faithful first mate, Smee was willing to follow him anywhere, follow any command.  He rather reminded him of a faithful dog, perhaps one of those new goldendoodles Swan’s lad had shown him moving pictures of on his telephone.  

Would even Smee stand beside him when he learned the full truth?  Killian hid his worries behind the mask of the stern captain.

“It’s about time, Mr. Smee.  You know how much I abhor waiting.  What is it that’s so urgent?”

“It’s just, um,” Smee stammered, “that me and the men were talking about how we haven’t seen much of you since we all ended up back here.”

Killian waited for a beat, but it soon became obvious that Smee was not inclined to elaborate without prompting. “Is there a point to that rather odd observation?”

“What’s keeping us from crewing up again, hitting the high seas, getting back to pirating?” Smee asked animatedly.

Killian’s heart plummeted again. He knew no matter how much he might have tried to go back, that life was no longer for him. “You mean, other than being attacked and turning into flying monkeys?  Have you forgotten there’s no safe passage out of this town?  You’ve already been a rodent, Mr. Smee, does life as a simian interest you as well?”

He hoped his tone of annoyance would deter Smee, but it seemed the other man was not to be put off this time. “Of course there’s safe passage!” Smee said. “We could outrun them!”

“Not with that tosser of yours,” Killian said, gesturing derisively to the broken down excuse for a boat Smee had purloined.

“If we had a fast enough ship,” Smee persisted, “The Jolly Roger for instance… You still haven’t told me whether you found her during the time none of us can remember.”

Another wave of pain washed over Killian.  Oh he’d found her alright.  He’d found her, traded a good man’s safety to take her back…and then he’d given her up again.  Aye, he’d do it all again a thousand times if it meant he could get back to Swan, but it still hurt.  She’d been his last link to Liam, to Milah.  She’d been his home and sanctuary for centuries.  He couldn’t help but feel her loss.  Keenly.

“What happened during that time isn’t important,” Killian said dismissively, praying that Smee would let it go.

It seemed the gods did not deign to smile on him this time.

“Because you remember,” he persisted. “Is our ship okay?  What…what happened to it?”

“My ship,” Killian barked.  “All you need to know, Mr. Smee, is that the Jolly Roger isn’t here, so there will be no outrunning of anything.”

“Well, I mean, what if we found another ship?” he tried, “Any one of these–”

Killian felt his exasperation multiply. “Mr. Smee, I’ve tried letting you down easy.  Now let me be more direct. I have no intention of leaving this town.”

I have no intention of leaving her.  Not ever again.

“Captain, I agree with you, this place has its bright spots,” Smee continued. “I have never tried anything quite like frozen yogurt before, but the Wicked Witch is here, and with that kind of danger, what possible reason do you have to stay?”

It was then that he spotted her.  Swan and her lad were walking toward him, clearly seeking him out.  His heart made its characteristic swoop at the sight of her.  She was so beautiful, so vibrant.  Though it had seemed impossible he could love her more, absence truly had made his heart grow fonder. Aye, he’d willingly, happily, give the Jolly away for her again and again–that and much more–to have the chance to keep her and her lad safe.

Whether or not Mr. Smee would understand his motives was an open question, and one he had no intention of exploring at the moment.  Instead, he infused his tone with every bit of command and steely determination he could muster.  Far stronger men than Smee had cowered before him when he got in their faces and employed the deadly tone he intended to use here. 

“My reasons are my own,” he growled. “Question them again at your peril.”

For the briefest moment he thought he saw a flash of pain, betrayal in his faithful first mate’s eyes, and he felt like the worst of cads.  In so many ways, Smee was a better man than he, and he deserved a better captain, a better friend.

But then Swan was there before him, and all else was forgotten.

OUAT Rewatch 3x17 - The Jolly Roger

You can’t just pretend like this never happened. Trust me. I spent the last year trying to do just that. Return to the person I used to be, and it didn’t work.

I recently got access to Disney plus and I just remembered OUAT is in it

So I'm looking through the episode titles and descriptions in Greek and... shit they're bad.

1x8 "The Price of Gold", the title was translated into "The Prince of Gold" for some reason.

The thumbnail for 8 "Desperate Souls" is this??

Did they mistake thumbnails with OUATIW?? XD

For episode 1x17 "Hat Trick" there's no direct translation in Greek, so instead they named the episode "The Mad Hatter". But then they named 2x11 "The Outsider" as "Yaoguai" because I guess that appears there.

BIG CRINGE they translated 3x17 "The Jolly Roger" as "The Pirate Flag" because yes that is what jolly roger means but it refers to Hook's ship jfc

The description for 3x19 is "Zelena threatens to kill Henry if Hook doesn't kiss Emma" and while it's accurate, it feels so funny to just read this as a description for the entire episode agdsghafdsg

Is this what the episode descriptions are in English too? Cause for 3x20 "Kansas" the description is "Mary Margaret is about to give birth" and that's even funnier XD

4x03 "Rocky Road" is "Dangerous Road" because we don't have that ice cream flavour in Greece -_-

The description for 4x04 "The Apprentice" is "Hook asks Gold to stick his hand back" but the verb used is like... the verb we use for welding metal and idk it looked weird XD

The description for 4x12 "Heroes and Villains" is "Our heroes try to unite the pieces" and I'm like WHAT. WHAT PIECES??

Seriously, I would have done a much better job.

The description for 4x16 "Poor Unfortunate Soul" is "Gold and the Queens of Darkness torture August"??? Like yes they do but that isn't the focus of the episode??

Description for 4x21 "Mother" is "Regina doesn't trust her mother's intentions" and I'm like did they mix Lily's and Regina's names XD

They didn't do the "scary dragon bitch" justice in the translation -_- My Disappointment Is Immeasurable And My Day Is Ruined

5x01 "The Dark Swan" is "The Black Swan" for some reason?? The word we have for "Dark" would have worked, but okay...

The rest of the thumbnails are good, though I guess those were not handled by the translators.

There's something about seeing this screenshot with the title for "Swan Song" in Greek. It's been nearly eight years and this storyline still pulls at my heartstrings.

5x13 "Labour of Love" is supposed to be connected to Hercules' Labours, but they didn't use the word for that that we use in Greek. It's still a correct word for "labour" but it should have been the word we use for Hercules' Labours. Again! I would've done a better job!

5x18 "Ruby Slippers" is translated as "The Kiss of True Love"??? Like I know the English title was a play-for-words for the Ruby/Dorothy ship but come on!!

6x12 "Murder Most Foul" is translated as "The Real Murderer" and the description says "Regina helps Robin adjust to Storybrooke" and again. Yes that happens there. BUT IT'S NOT THE FUCKING FOCUS.

For three episodes straight, 6x15, 6x16 and 6x17 the descriptions are about what Hook does. "Hook is trapped in another realm with the Nautilus", "Hook bets his most prized possession in a cards game", "Hook and Tiger Lily join forces against the Lost Boys". Like yes that happens but again not the focus?? Was a Hook fan responsible for that because I kinda relate lmao that's all I remember too 🤝

7x14 "The Girl in the Tower" has the description "Ivy tries to reconcile with Anastasia" and I'm like what?? Did they mix things up? And even if that happened in that episode, IT'S NOT THE FOCUS.

Massive disappointment. I should have been hired to write episode descriptions. Hmph.

What His Captain Needs

This is an idea brought to you by the fabulous @thesschesthair who wants to see more of Killian/Smee interactions. So, we decided to fill in a few blanks with little missing scenes between them, and we’ll loosely post them. This one’s written by me, as well as It’s Forever. summary: Set in 3x17. After his unsatisfying talk with Killian, Smee watches his Captain from afar talk to Emma Swan and her son. And suddenly he understands a few things.

"Sir."

The sturdy man inclines his head in a mix of a nod and a respectful bow and turns away without another word. In the many, many endless years he's spent serving his Captain he's learned when it's advisable to back down and be silent, but that doesn't mean he can't be annoyed with him. And William Smee is pretty annoyed with his Captain right now.

My reasons are my own, question them again at your peril.

It's not the harsh words or the gruff tone, he has heard far worse over the years – it's the message that angers him. Yes, he's the Captain, and of course it's his ship and his call, but Smee has been a loyal subordinate and First Mate to Captain Hook for almost three centuries, has seen him become Captain Hook, and by God, it hasn't always been easy – and he bloody well deserves a little more honesty, doesn't he? Instead, the Captain prefers to keep him in the dark about everything: what happened in the missing year he has no memory of, and what happened to the ship that has been a home to him for the last three hundred years - what his plans are for the crew, the future.

Smee stops and turns around to look back.

The Captain isn’t standing there by himself anymore, brooding and staring into the distance of the ocean, but the blonde woman has approached him, Emma Swan, the Savior. Smee notices her lad waiting a few feet away, absorbed in something he does with one of those modern contraptions. This is the boy, he recalls, the Captain went to rescue to godforsaken Neverland of all places – the accursed island they’d spent decades desperately trying to get away from. He still can’t wrap his mind around the fact that the Captain willingly maneuvered himself within the reach of the blasted child demon again, for the sake of a boy he had no connection to.

Curiously, he watches the interaction between the Captain and Emma Swan; he's too far away to hear what is spoken, but that's not even necessary. His mouth pulls into an involuntary little grin when he sees him utilize the whole arsenal he’s witnessed so often – the smirk, the smolder, the whole body language that suggests intimacy; alas, this time, it doesn’t seem to work on the lady: she seems bored at worst, sober and unimpressed at best.

The Captain immediately drops the dallying and gets all serious, obviously he's really listening to what she's saying. Smee narrows his eyes, trying to make sure they don't deceive him – he's never seen him like this. Oh, the Captain has always been a ladies' man for sure, and not for no reason, as far as he can judge; he always treated women well – looked at them like he was really seeing them – but he never showed them anything but the Captain. His expression right now is unlike anything Smee has ever seen on that handsome face: it’s soft, and sad, and vulnerable.

Now he has always been a good Captain looking out for his crew – strict, yes, and even severe whenever his orders weren’t obeyed, but mostly fair, and never unnecessarily cruel. He’d taken him in and given him a place in his crew when he could easily have made him walk the plank – God knew he was in a dark enough mood right after giving the body of his former love to the sea. But Smee became a respected member of the crew, and after the Captain had satisfied himself of the former trader’s loyalty and clever resourcefulness, he’d even made him his trusted First Mate. But even though Smee likes to think that over the decades, their companionship has evolved into one that comes very close to a friendship, he has never really seen a display of kindness, even if he always suspected the Captain has some of that in him. One could always read his mood on his face – sometimes a booming joviality, often grim determination or anger – but he’d always been very careful not to show emotions like hurt or sadness, even if Smee was sure they haunted him many a night.

He scrutinizes his Captain’s face again from afar, feeling almost guilty doing so, like an intruder, and it’s like he’s looking at a man he never met before.

Emma Swan has beckoned her lad nearer and talks to him, motioning to the Captain who smiles at him and puts his hand on the boy's shoulder. After a brief nod, she turns around and walks away, leaving the man and the boy at the mole. Smee watches the Captain's gaze follow her – blue eyes full of pain and... longing.

And suddenly he knows. The Jolly Roger isn't here, but whatever happened to the ship isn't important anymore, not to the Captain. This ship, any ship, isn't what he wants. Even if – at least right now – it brings him pain and sadness and makes him vulnerable, it also makes him look alive, somehow. Like he's found something he's been missing forever. Something worth fighting for. And this is why he's staying here: Emma Swan and her fight against that witch. But mostly Emma Swan. Of course he wants to keep that reason to himself – pirate captains live on their reputation, and they can't have anyone blabbing around that they've gone soft… but Smee has no intention to. He likes that expression on him.

Now, even without a ship – he is still a First Mate, and the man over there is his Captain. And it's a good First Mate's duty to help with whatever it is that his Captain needs.

William Smee nods to himself. That's exactly what he's going to do.
