I have an insane amount of respect for all Kanato stans out there who keep up with this little brat’s selfish behavior because it couldn’t be me. The scene starts outside in the garden.

*Thud*

[00:17] “Here you go. I purchased this tea because I figured it would strike your fancy. Since I decided to hold a tea party, I want to thoroughly enjoy it. Take a whiff. Does it not smell wonderful? Darjeeling is very subtle in taste, yet extremely fragrant. It fits you perfectly.”

You fail to respond.

[00:46] “Say, why would you ignore me? I prepared nothing but your favorites today, yet you won’t even say a single thank you...That’s a little strange, don’t you think? Why…? How…? I might as well just enjoy the tea party by myself then.”

You remain quiet.

[01:21] “I suppose you really won’t give me a response. ...You’re acting a little off today. Or is that just my imagination? Ahー Could it be because of that moon? The moon makes us Vampires feel restless inside. Perhaps it has the same effect on humans? Fufu...Fufufufu...Ahahaha!

*Cling*

[02:23] “Come on, you should try your tea before it gets cold. It is much more delicious when enjoyed hot after all. Take a proper look at these flowers I arranged for you!”

*Rustle rustle*

*Shatter*

“Haah...I prepared all of this for you...So be delighted...and smile…Hey? Say something! Look at me! I’m begging you…!!”

You fail to respond once more.

[03:07] “Hey...I’m talking to you…! Sniffle...Uu...WHY WON’T YOU SAY ANYTHING!?”

“Ah...Uu...Hic...Aaah...Uu...Why…!? Why!? Why!? Why!? Kuh...Why did you die…? Hey? ANSWER ME!!”

[04:06] “Haah...Scoot a little closer. How am I supposed to suck your blood like this? Did you not hear me when I said I’m feeling unwell? Even having to sit upright in bed is rough. Are you not aware of why people come to the infirmary in the first place? You’re supposed to nurse me back to health, so be a little more considerate at least! ーー Come on, hurry!”

You walk over to the bed.

[04:47] “Took you long enough, gosh…”

You frown.

“...Hm? You’re asking if I’m upset? Hah. And what exactly makes you think that?”

You shrug.

“Hmー You choose to feign ignorance, huh?”

He looks away.

[05:11] “It’s nothing. ...More importantly, hurry up, will you? It’s difficult to drink your blood when you’re standing there, spaced out. Come closer. Don’t make me have to spell it out for you.”

You hesitate.

“...Why are you acting like that? Do you want to upset me?”

You shake your head.

“If you do not, then fix that attitude of yours.”

You finally step closer.

[05:50] “Exactly. You should have just kept quiet and obeyed me from the very beginning. ...Come on, now kneel down. I’ll suck your blood.”

*Rustle*

“Keep still? Ah…”

Kanato bites you.

*Sluuuurp*

[06:22] “Mmh…It’ll hurt if you move, remember?”

*Sluuuurp*

“Nn...Hah...Didn’t I just tell you to keep still!? Aah...Or do you want it to hurt, perhaps? Hahn…”

*Sluuuurp*

“Fufufu...~ So you actually do. You’re that kind of girl after all.”

You deny his words.

[07:01] “You don’t even know that about yourself? Well, I suppose it’s fine. I’ll be so kind as to tell you. Someone did say that humans are the most ignorant when it comes to themselves after all. I assume that goes for you as well? You see, you just love pain and suffering. Give that some serious thought (1). ...That’s why you did something which would upset me...It was on purpose, obviously!”

You shake your head.

[07:52] “Oh please, don’t play dumb now! I saw it with my own eyes! You were having a rather friendly chat with him ーー with Reiji at the manor, weren’t you? Hahn…”

*Sluuuurp*

“Ugh…! ...Fufu...What a forced cry! You can drop the act now. I already know you aren’t opposed to the pain, since it actually makes you feel good, doesn’t it? Did you have some fun with Reiji in a similar fashion as well? Hahn…”

*Sluuuurp*

[08:36] “...Did you think I would believe you if you denied it with tears in your eyes like that? Think again! (2) ...Mmh…”

You start to feel faint. 

“Fufu...Are you pretending to suddenly feel faint as part of your act as well? Seems like you have become a natural at this.”

You explain.

[08:57] “You’re feeling unwell? Haha…That’s a new one.”

You ask him to stop.

“The answer is no. I’m not satisfied yet. After all, I’ve barely had any.”

You repeat that you’re feeling unwell. 

[09:19] “You still insist on acting as if you’re in pain? ...CUT IT OUT ALREADY! I mean, it doesn’t make sense for this to suddenly happen, does it!? I’ve always been able to suck this much blood without any issues! 

...Aah. I see. I get it now. You’re running low on blood because you let him feed off you, correct? That’s why you’re coming up with the random excuse of feeling unwell, am I right? That’s the only logical explanation! ...How dare you!”

Kanato continues to suck your blood as you protest.

[10:05] “If you’re so sure that I’m just misunderstanding things...Then why don’t you tell me straight up what you were talking about with Reiji yesterday!?” 

You flinch.

“...Cat got your tongue?”

You tell him. 

“You were discussing your health? ...Fufu...That’s a lie. After all, the two of you seemed rather close. Standing there together, whispering to each other.”

You look away. 

“See? You’ve gone quiet again. Do you have nothing to say!?”

You apologize.

[10:50] “Kuh...Giving me a meek apology will only add to my anger, you know? ...Well, I’m broad-minded so I don’t mind letting it slide this once. However, do not dare to even get close to him again in the future. Can you promise me that?”

You nod.

*Rustle*

“...Hah!”

He pushes you away.

*Thud*

[11:25] “Oh please, you’re overreacting. I only pushed you lightly, yet you act as if you’re about to fall over. ...There’s really no need to still keep this act up though. Good grief…”

*Rustle*

“What are you spacing out for? Come on, wrap your arms around me.”

[11:50] “...Took you long enough to embrace me, geez. ...Stroke my head, please. I’m exhausted after sucking your blood, so it only makes sense you reward me now, right?”

You agree, promising him you’ll try your best.

33. Best day of your life?

I don‘t have a favourite day, but the last week was perfect. I was skiing with family and it was great. We had a perfect weather, I skied actually really good and my cousins and I are probably Soulmates.

4. Do they cuddle/snuggull/hug in their sleep? Do they talk in their sleep?

Oh Lin for definite is a sleep hugger. This monkey when not Absolutely Drop-dead ‘I will lie where I keel over and wont move at all’ exhausted practically burritos herself in whatever she is wrapped in. If someone is nearby her hand and tail do just unconsciously wrap around them, and she does curl around or on them slightly bc if you are someone she would Let herself fall asleep around you are Trusted and she will ensure you are kept safe and know you are loved even when she isn’t awake. Protective like that.

Talking? It varies. There are either very content monkey chittering noises and the odd happy swear... or on the worse nights if someone really listens they do hear her repeating names. She’s protective, and unfortunately sometimes the mind twists that into worst case scenarios backlit by fangs... at least the nightmares are rarer nowadays.

7. Do they prefer warm, mild or cold baths/showers?

Warm! This monkey likes this luxury. Cold blast to start so she actually wakes the peck up or changes track from her thoughts and can enjoy it, but after that it’s as hot as she can get. Do NOT ask how long it takes that fluffy fur to dry and brush out afterwards. Network has to ‘help’, which certainly ends up fun.

8. What's their view on socks/shoes/pants?

Pants- very important! They have pockets! Also very fond of skirts as they are flowy and quite frankly peckin’ excellent and can have secret pockets!

Socks- she can give or take them, honestly prefers barefoot as then she can get good grip on things when on smooth floors, but can be nice, and are good in shoes.

Shoes- Loves them! Loves shoes so much! She can wear them again! They make fun noises as she goes about on different surfaces and it is the most Peckin’ Fantastic thing. Now she has the 1ft tall heels from Lethe she is even more pleased, she’s SO tall (she’s really not, she’s 4’6, she is still shorter than the majority of folks she knows but shhhh, she’s having a blast).

12. If they could live anywhere, where would it be? What kind of house would they have?

House wise? Network always. She honestly can’t imagine living anywhere else as Network-Sweetheart-Nettle is not just a house, they are her Sweetheart, her home, the heart of everything she has known for a long time. The idea of NOT coming back to them is unfathomable.

However if she could move Network to somewhere else? I think she’d most certainly move out of Toontown, even though it is the place she knows So well- better than she knows the back of her hand in fact. She knows the roofs and the streets and their familiar patterns and connections to the detective world very easily. But it would be nice to get away from the constant noise and chaos and it’s many plot-starting and plot-related scenes that send her heart and mind racing not always in the best way. Go somewhere a bit quieter or at least less extreme constant action packed; where she could go to Toontown for jobs but also know that some case or misadventure wasn’t going to burst through her doors at odd hours or the radio constantly blare the local crimes on a loop. She’s got a place in mind that she would move herself and her lil Rai to if she felt she could, has tried to think how she would ask even though she knows the answer would most likely be positive. But as she Refuses to leave Network it’s a shelved thought.

19. Who do they miss the most right now?

Honestly, she’s been doing pretty great on reconnecting with people. For the gap period of time she Deeply missed her dear mentor/partner Almond and her lil niece Wendy. As well as her Stagehand family she had been pushing herself away from to keep as safe as she could from herself (with certain factors and the red tinged nightmares further deepening that desire to get the distance from them all). Then when on the run there was the compounding with her new family and connections, but she’s rekindled all of those now. Makes sure to visit her old family and her new family often. Even if just for a tea and chat. She’s certainly got her favourite places to go and her key triangle (Network, Manor/Halloweentown, Dulcis Agency). She’s doing genuinely, honestly, well in this area of her life.

So in a sense? Right now she misses her past self. The young Pompom who saw the world with such wide-eyed optimism and hope. The Goldie who was a little less world battered and paranoid. The Lil Lin who didn’t flinch at things that she can’t quite understand Why, who didn’t freeze or panic or have to take a chill pill and clutch her broach to stop phantoms rearing their heads. Who believed every crime could be solved with a happy ending and every case if she worked hard enough could be solved with no one getting hurt. Where everything was safe. They were rose tinted glasses that got cracked a long time ago, and her scar even though it is now healed is a constant reminder of what lurks in the dark. Why she can’t let herself just be happy and relaxed… and every time someone she has loved has dropped to the ground or some news she Should have known if she had just Looked comes to light has cemented this. She misses when she ‘Knew’ everything was safe and would be alright, even as she knows now the Best state things can be in within this Plot-driven world is Truly Fine.

20. What kind of touch do they need the most right now? Forehead kiss? To hold someone? To be held? [Insert other options here]?

She needs a Giant F-ing Bearhug, a grounding force good, safe, squeeze.

Lil Lin is a toon who has seen so much and still feels as though she has to scale a mountain to combat and fix everything. Always So Much to do. To keep Einquell safe, to keep Toontown and Halloweentown safe, to keep Her Family safe. She wants to make the world safe for her nieces and nephews and her CornMaze family and her Dulcis family, not to mention her Son- who has been through so much which she has to keep working to ensure he is safe and hidden from those who hurt him before. She can’t rest as she has to do All The Stuff. She needs a hug to make her Stop. Even just for a minute. Help her come back into her own mind and her own body, especially when she gets frazzled or something hits a trigger that sends her off kilter.

Lin doesn’t like viewing herself as small, but she will admit it’s nice to be held and have someone support her for just a minute. She would also admit with some prodding that just being able to sit with gentle contact is nice. The casual and absent minded gestures of familiarity that show people are comfortable around her.

But also the more deliberate touches are wonderful: she has her favourites. A hand cupping the back of her head or ruffling her hair, hand wrapped around hers, being tugged to see something or grasped to mentally show her things through Echo by Lethe and Rai, knuckles brushing as mugs are tapped together. Those little memorable touches that are interwoven through all her memories. Her hands are one of the favourite things about herself she has, that sort of touch with others is both needed and cherished.

28. What would they do if they could go back in time?

In an ideal world: Be there.

Be there for her Lil Rai when he had no one. Be there to find the information and stop things that would happen to so many different folks, get them to better places sooner, find out Why they are the way they are- like what the peck is up with Teal perhaps. Take the stress off Almond and lessen some of those new scars she now sees. Be there when the folks she knows so dearly were hurt- those she met on a certain demi-plane and witnessed their stories spring to mind here. She would go back and stop that terrible moment in the maze and at the dinner party and the times when things went wrong and where people hit the dirt because she was too slow or too blind or wasn’t enough to stop any of it. She’d fix all the things she wasn’t good enough to do or be there for.

But when not thinking of others… actually she’d always think of others. As even if going back in HER story, she would have stopped the first stagehand going missing before stopping the exact moment she got bit- if she’d just noticed and got on the Shady Deal case sooner, brought in Almond and got to that warehouse at the very start- took it to the source sooner, maybe it would have helped. (She doesn’t know this but it wouldn’t have changed her narrative much at all, once she was noticed... ) at least it would have meant less people under her care would have gotten hurt.

But she can’t change the past, so she has to do the best to do and solve Everything Better now. She just hopes she catches enough.

I am currently reading I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak where this 19-year-old cab driver stops a robber and has to fulfill all these tasks sent to him on aces from a deck of cards. Also 10/10 since it’s a reread.

35. Favourite day of the week? Thursday. In my senior year my school week was over when I left my internship at 5 on Thursdays and those feelings of relief and freedom have lasted until now.

50. How did you get your biggest scar? It was 5ish o’clock in the afternoon and I hadn’t eaten since breakfast. My mom had finished dinner, but I told her I needed to go to the bathroom before I sat down to dinner. So I went to my bathroom and promptly fainted into the bathtub (low blood sugar I guess). I woke up a minute or so later having bashed my head into the tub. My glasses punctured my face, making symmetrical gashes in between my eyebrows. I went to an urgent care and got them stitched up. You can hardly see them because the doctor did a good job. Plus, I still wear glasses so they hide the scars too.

CALLING VERITY

“Oh my God, is he still there?” Were Verity’s first words when she answered the phone.

Caroline sighed, “Sadly not. We’re doing this very sexy thing where we fucked out our emotions and now we are supposed to be professional. He left last night.”

“Oh Caroline.” Verity sighed. “What have you done?”

“I don’t even know? Like I was the one who suggested it?”

“Why?”

“I kind of told him that I liked him a lot but I thought he was getting weirded out so I just went haha let’s fuck? And he went for it. How am I going to go to work on Monday Verity?” Caroline sighed. “Actually I’m glad he’s not here, Horace climbed in my bed and even he is recoiling at my awful morning breath.”

Verity laughed audibly. “I’m so sad I literally live 1000 miles away. I want to meet this guy!”

“Yeah why did you move to Lisbon? I miss you. I need you to see if you think he’s as hot as I think he is.”

“You know it’s quite encouraging.” Verity remarked. “Normally after you sleep with a guy, you question how you were even attracted to him in the first place.”

“Ugh, why do I have to have feelings Verity?” Caroline whinged, cuddling Horace closer. “I’ve decided the only man I’m allowing into my life now is Horace. That’s it. That’s the rules.” She climbed out of bed, almost dropping her iPhone in the process.

“I mean, we all saw how you lasted with your no men rule.”

“Stop it!” Caroline made a beeline for the kettle, ready to make a (good) cup of (proper) tea, unlike that milky shit Dwight lovingly makes her every morning. “I never catch feelings, what’s wrong with me?”

“Honestly who even is she anymore? Colour me shoo-”

“Verity! Emergency!” Caroline picked up some of her own stationary with ‘For Caroline’ scrawled on the front.

“What?” Verity called back but Caroline had already put the phone down, ripping open the envelope keenly.

Dear Caroline,

Just to let you know, I know very little about women (who aren’t patients) but I know enough to know you’re a fantastic one.

“Verity my fanny is fluttering intensely.” Caroline picked the phone back up.

“Caroline!”

“How am I supposed to work with him when he keeps giving me all these… love kernels?”

“You’ve got to stay strong.” Verity was using her motivational mum voice. “Resolute.”

“He left me his number, I’m going to text him, ask what time he’s coming in on Monday.”

“Caroline I really don’t think that’s a-”

“Goodbye Verity!” Caroline slammed down her phone before realizing that could break the screen and also that she needed it immediately to text Dwight. Her hands were shaking a little and she was shocked at the pure effect he had on her. She didn’t feel like she’d ever felt like this about a man before, despite the overwhelming amount of men (and women) interested in her.

“Oh fuck.” She put an earl grey tea bag in her mug, something she’d become accustomed to since meeting Dwight. “I’m a white man’s whore.” Horace was whining at her feet and she opened her double doors to let him out, contemplating how she’d been so involved in solving this damn case, she’d put herself second again. Which she swore she’d never do.

Maybe sleeping with Dwight was a mistake. Maybe she should make him less involved in the case.

But you see, he had this way of connecting with witnesses, asking the right questions that made Caroline feel more secure, even as an experienced detective.

Plus, she sighed, there was definitely something there. Why on earth did he have to be her colleague?

“Oh Horace,” she spooned his food into his bowl where he had returned from the garden. “I’ve fucked up.”

Horace simply snaffled his food in reply and she stared at him fondly. Living in a ground floor apartment meant she had a beautiful little patio and she could watch Horace all day at the weekend, unless the case was really desperate. But she’d bought her files home and was ready to read up on her next witness, Rowella Chynoweth.  

Why on earth hadn’t she called on the sister of the deceased earlier? Apparently she lived in the next town over but witness statements showed they had not spoken since Morwenna’s marriage to Osborne Whitworth. This seemed unlikely due to the close proximity of the sisters. Character references also seemed to prove she couldn’t hold a job down, with one employer calling her a ‘pathological liar.’

As much as she admired Dwight, she knew she’d have to do this one alone.

POLICE INTERVIEW WITH SUSPECT:

MISS ROWELLA CHYNOWETH (POSSIBLE WITNESS, SISTER OF THE DECEASED): RC

DET. CAROLINE PENVENEN: CP

CP: Just to reassure you, this is a chat more than an interview, legal counsel probably is not required unless you insist on it.

RC: Well, when I need it I have the best that money can buy.

CP: Really? I have a warrant to your bank statements that seem to suggest otherwise.

RC: I have my means.

CP: Are you referring to the £1,000 given to you each month by an Osborne Whitworth?

RC: Yes, they regret they could not see me often so they sent me some compensatory money.

CP: That’s odd. Unusual for a family. Did Mowenna know about this money?

RC: Yes.

CP: I will make note of this. What was your relationship like with your sister and her husband?

RC: My sister and I drifted apart after her marriage. I always thought her jealous of me because she chose to be married and regretted it after.

CP: Some witnesses have reported that your sister was unhappy in her marriage, does this surprise you?

RC: Honestly? She was miserable all the time about one thing or another I wouldn’t take that too seriously.

CP: Did you ever notice any abnormalities in her marriage to the Reverend Whitworth?

RC: As I say, I distanced myself after the marriage.

CP: Yes, could we go through that again? You have ‘distanced’ yourself by living just one town over but they miss you so much, they send you compensatory money?

RC: Yes, I wouldn’t change a word you said. Let the record show that. Anything else?

CP: Yes one more thing, where were you the afternoon and evening of the murder?

RC: With my boyfriend, a man named Arthur Sawley.

CP: That’s all for now, Rowella, don’t skip town.

Caroline swung open her office door, ready to collapse into her comfortable chair when-

“You look absolutely exhausted and it’s only 10am.”

Dwight was sat in the chair opposite her desk, smiling, as if he had been there for quite a while and honestly? It had Caroline shook up.

“Oh yeah sorry,” Caroline forced out a smile through her shock. “I just had a really difficult witness.”

“Oh really? I didn’t know you had one coming in today.” Dwight countered as Caroline made herself comfortable in her chair. Honestly even retaining eye contact with him was a lot right now.

“Yeah Rowella Chynoweth. She’s a liar, I sense it in my gut. And from several sturdy character references.” Caroline scribbled furiously on her interview notes. “There’s this £1000 I just cannot justify.” She explained to him about the monthly payments and Dwight furrowed his brow.

“Maybe he’s paying her off for something?”

“But she said Morwenna knew about the payments?” Caroline could not connect the dots.

“But she’s a liar.” Dwight shrugged. “By the way, your hair looks nice today.”

Caroline blushed. She’d worn her hair down for the first time in ages and she wasn’t wearing a pantsuit for the first time in ages because she’d decided it was a new week and time for a new Caroline. “Thank you.” She’d always been excellent at taking compliments. How well she had been schooled. “I need a fucking clue, none of this is slotting together.” She’d been biting her biro for the last five minutes. “When will people stop lying?”

“She seems like the number one suspect at the moment.” Dwight suggested. “I’m sad I didn’t get to interview her sociopathic self.”

“Oh you missed nothing- I knew what I had to do and at least I’ve got some frankly lazy cover stories to work with.”

“Hey Caroline.” She was startled by the receptionist knocking on the door. “This just came for you.”

She passed a brown envelope with a printed label saying DET. CAROLINE PENVENEN

“Ooh I hope it’s my payslip.” Caroline smiled. “I’m broke as hell this month.” Dwight didn’t need to know that with her inheritance she’d never have to work a day in her life because it wasn’t important.

“It looks lowkey suspicious.” Dwight winced slightly.

“The new receptionist is very new so I will just have to see what amateur hour she’s produced here.” Caroline broke the seal with her letter opener she’d used only once before.

Inside were two sheets of paper almost stuck together and Caroline gasped when she saw what it was. “Oh my God Dwight.” She said under her breath, “You’re not going to believe this.”

For inside the envelope were two… indecent pictures of Rowella Chynoweth and the Reverend Osborne Whitworth.

“Oh my god.” Dwight gasped. “First of all, I’m never going to unsee that, put it away. Second of all, that’s probably what the money was for.”

“Morwenna couldn’t have possibly known about that money.” Caroline shook her head. “But I think we just found some motive.”

“Next question,” Dwight added, “Who sent this?”

“I will run the envelope to evidence for prints but I doubt there will be anything. Whoever is giving me these clearly wants to remain anonymous.” Caroline sighed. “FUCK.”

“You know, you should start a swear jar,” Dwight reclined his seat. “You’d make so much money.”

“When I was younger, swearing was bad manners. My uncle always said ‘no man will ever love you if you have a foul mouth’ and I just thought… well fuck.”

“That’s actually not true.” Dwight replied. “If anything it makes you more intellectual, shows you have a stronger grasp on the English language.”

Caroline blushed again. “Dwight, stop.” She shook her head. “Next thing I’ll have myself thinking you believe in me.”

To that, Dwight just smiled enigmatically. “What’s the harm in me believing you can solve this case?”

Hi yeah, the problem is I’m trying to delete my feelings for you but every time we are in the same room it intensifies times 100.

“Nothing. I’m a brilliant detective.” Caroline smirked. “And you’re a subpar doctor.”

“Stop it.” Dwight laughed. “I didn’t spend seven years at university to be called subpar!”

“Ok,” Caroline conceded, trying to tone down how extra she was being because she felt as if she was embarrassing herself. “I’ll confess, you’re a pretty great doctor. To dead people. I guess.”

“Wow.” Dwight was happy she’d finally cracked. “That’s going to be the opening statement on the cover letter for my next job.”

“What?” Caroline furrowed her eyebrows. “You’re leaving the morgue?”

“Yeah, I’ve done my time. I want to be a GP, it’s a bit more my scene. I’m going to have to go back to school for a bit first, but yeah, I plan to leave for Cambridge as soon as this case is over.”

Caroline’s heart was stamped on. Is this why he wanted to solve the case as soon as possible? Why the change? Did he not want to work with her anymore?

“Caroline,” Dwight attempted to regain her eye contact. “You literally look as if you’ve seen a ghost, are you ok?”

“This isn’t about… what happened between us is it?” Caroline could barely get the words out, she felt as if her mouth was made of cotton. How had she caught feelings so fast?

“No.” Dwight was quick to respond, holding his hand out over the table. “You are quite an incredible woman Caroline but not so much so you make me want to change practice.”

Caroline tentatively put her hand out back. “You see, things like this hurt me Dwight.”

“Things like what?”

“I don’t know whether it’s because you’re my colleague, or whether you’re a professional but, I just never feel like you’re completely in my reach.” Caroline said in a voice barely more than a whisper.

“Caroline,” Dwight replied almost instantly. “Do you want me to be in reach?”

Desperately, Caroline thought to herself.

“Until you go to Cambridge.”  Caroline kept her voice calm. “I think we should keep doing… what we do. I don’t think I’m ready to let go yet. Are you?”

Dwight sighed, carding a hand through his hair. “I wish I could say I was but, we are going to have to keep it secret.”

“The best kept secret.”

“How did this get so complicated?” Dwight was confused. “If this were any other circumstance I would be dating the hell out of you right now.”

Belle tasted the soup that was cooking, stirring the silky, pale orange mixture with a wooden spoon and breathing in the sweet aromas of pumpkin, onions and carrots.  There was no need for her to do so; the castle had everything under control, and her only duties for that evening’s dinner were to carry everything from one side of the kitchen to the other, and stay out of the bloody way.  Or so Rumplestiltskin had informed her.

She had now been living in the Dark Castle for two months, and winter was just starting to turn to spring.  Chores kept her busy for much of the day, but she had noticed that she was having to do less and less around the place, the castle using its own strange magic to wash clothing and dishes and make the dust disappear.  With more free time on her hands, she read from Rumplestiltskin’s extensive library, and chatted with Graham when he wasn’t out hunting.

She liked to talk with Rumplestiltskin too, when he was in the mood to be sociable.  Her favourite times were when he returned from deal-making, and she would ask him about his travels, seated cross-legged in the leather armchair nearest his spinning wheel.  He told her tales of mermaids and pirate ships, of lands where winter never ended, and of deserts where the dunes went on as far as the eye could see, a golden ocean of shifting sands.  Belle wished that she could see the places he visited, but she had never asked to accompany him, and he had never offered to take her.  She wished that he would.

She took the pan of soup from the stove, using both hands and puffing a little, and poured it into the silver serving tureen.  Rumplestiltskin had informed her that he was entertaining a guest that evening, and her eyes had widened in surprise.  She had not seen anyone since her arrival at the Dark Castle; although she was aware that people occasionally called, he was careful not to let her interact with them.  Even tonight, she had been instructed to put the dishes at the end of the table and they would be transported to the dining hall by magic.  She placed hot rolls on a plate and set it next to the tureen, then stood back.  The dishes vanished, but not before Belle clapped her hand to her mouth.  The serving ladle!  Panic made her forget the magic in place, and she snatched it up and raced from the kitchen and up the stairs, almost falling through the door to the dining hall.

“I’m sorry, I—” she gasped, and snapped her mouth shut.

Rumplestiltskin was slouching in his usual chair, fingertips tapping together, and to his left was a tall, dark-haired young man in an elaborately-embroidered black frock coat over a purple waistcoat and silk shirt.  A cravat in a muted pattern was tied around his throat, and he was eyeing Belle with undisguised interest.

“Did you want something, dearie?” asked the Dark One, in a bored voice, and Belle pulled her eyes from the stranger at his table.

Rumplestiltskin was dressed from head to toe in black; his jacket was high-collared and looked uncomfortable, most unlike the soft leathers and silk shirts he had taken to wearing in her presence.  She supposed he had a façade to present to those he dealt with, and was suddenly, uncomfortably aware that she should not be there.  She brandished the ladle like a weapon.

“You won’t get far without this,” she said lamely, hurrying to the tureen and dropping the ladle into the steaming soup.

“She’s very lovely, Rumple,” said the man.  “I can see why you’d want to hide her away.  People always want to steal good servants.”

He smiled as he said it, his eyes gleaming, and Belle blushed, sure he wasn’t referring to her cleaning abilities.

“I believe the mark of a good servant is that you don’t know she’s there,” said Rumplestiltskin, with a thinly-disguised sneer, and Belle’s jaw clenched.  The visitor rolled his eyes.

“You must excuse my friend, Miss..?”

“Belle,” she said, and the man got to his feet, sweeping a bow.

“Jefferson, portal jumper and procurer of hard to find objects.  At your service, Miss Belle.”

“It’s Lady Belle!” snapped Rumplestiltskin, and Jefferson’s eyebrows twitched.

“You have a noblewoman serving you dinner?” he asked.

“She’s supposed to clean the castle as well,” said Rumplestiltskin in a sour tone.  “Not that I see much evidence of it.”

“Rumple!” chided Jefferson.  “How could you let this gorgeous creature lift a finger around this place?”

“She doesn’t seem to be working too hard at the moment.”

“Then I’d better get back to the kitchens, hadn’t I?” said Belle tartly.  “There are still three courses to serve and the dishes to wash.”

“She should be dressed in silks and drinking wine with us, not stuck down in the kitchens!” protested Jefferson, and he took Belle’s hand, bending to kiss it.  “My Lady, your beauty fills this room with light.”

“Stop fondling my maid!” snarled Rumplestiltskin.  “She does little enough as it is, without you encouraging her!”

Belle raised her chin.

“Will that be all, sir?” she asked coolly.

“I didn’t ask you to come up here in the first place!” he snapped.  “‘Will that be all’, indeed!  Go and bloody well clean something and stop bothering me, would you?”

Belle’s mouth worked as she bit back the retort she wanted to make, and she turned on her heel and stomped off towards the double doors to head back to the kitchens.

The doors slammed after her, and Jefferson sat back down, eyeing Rumplestiltskin with what looked like amusement.

“The way you flirt is shameful.”

Rumplestiltskin blinked rapidly.

“Disciplining a servant is not flirting!”

“It is when you both look like you want to fight then fuck,” said Jefferson blandly, and Rumplestiltskin squeaked in outrage, bouncing out of his chair.

“I - I—” he spluttered.  “I have never heard anything so blatantly ridiculous in three centuries!”

“Relax, Rumple.”  Jefferson’s voice was lazy.  “Just saying you like her.  And she seems to like you.”

“You always were a poor judge of character,” snapped Rumplestiltskin, pacing back and forth.  “She’s my maid!  It would be the height of bad taste for me to even think of touching her.  Which I’m not!”

“Of course you’re not.”  Jefferson sounded wholly unconvinced.  “And you can stop with the righteous indignation, I’m sure you wouldn’t take advantage of the girl.  However much she might want you to.”

“Did you suffer a blow to the head?” demanded Rumplestiltskin.  “Because if not I would be more than happy to administer one!”

“Fine!” sighed Jefferson, stretching in his seat and reaching for his wine.  “Forget I said anything.  Just know that I made a bet on how things are gonna go between you two, and if I win, you owe me.  Agreed?”

“Without knowing the terms?” said Rumplestiltskin sourly.  “I think not.”

Jefferson chuckled, winking at him.

“Oh, believe me Rumple, if I win, you win too.”

Belle had stormed back to the kitchen, arms pumping as she marched along the corridor, huffing a tendril of hair out of her eyes.  The nerve of the man!  She had forgotten how rude he could be.  She paced up and down, waiting for the soup tureen to appear at the end of the table, signifying that the next course (baked fish with buttered spinach and peas) should be sent up.  By the time she was readying the third course, she had calmed down, but irritation still made her restless, and she even washed the dishes without waiting for the castle to do it.

It was over three hours later that Rumplestiltskin came down, the sound of his boots on the stone steps making her mouth thin as she wrung out a cloth to clean the kitchen table.  She supposed he would want tea, but it was odd that he hadn’t simply appeared, given his order and poofed away again.  

“I haven’t seen you for a while,” he said quietly, and she snorted, wiping the table vigorously.

“I’ve been learning to be a good servant, my Lord,” she said coolly.  “Seen and not heard, isn’t that right?  Or better still, not even seen at all.  You didn’t see me, so I’ve clearly been doing my job correctly.”

He was silent for a moment, and she finished the table and straightened up, moving past him.  He clutched her arm, making her gasp as she brushed against him.

“I’m trying to keep you safe, Belle,” he said, his voice almost gentle. “Jefferson is a friend, but he likes to talk when he drinks, and you never can tell who might be listening.  There are those that would hurt you if they could, just for being my – for being here, with me.”

She met his eyes, large and anxious, and raised her chin.

“Well, it’s not as though I ever leave this place, is it?” she asked.  “Who could possibly hurt me?”

“I’d prefer not to tempt fate,” he said dryly, and she pulled free, rubbing her arm.

“Why do you even care?”

“We had a deal,” he said, moving away from her, his fingers twisting a little in the air.  “And I always honour my agreements.”

“Yes,” she said, after a pause.  "And I honour mine.  I can’t help it if the castle gets to the dirty dishes before I have a chance to.“

"I know.”  He was silent for a moment, his fingers still moving in the air. “Would you come to my tower?”

“What for?”

“You said I could borrow your necklace,” he said.  "I’d like to borrow it tonight, if you have no objection.“

Belle felt curiosity surge within her, and she nodded.

"Alright.”

1. Does it annoy you when people send three more texts while you are trying to respond to the question they asked in the text before that? nope, I dont mind. I might get a bit flustered trying to reply quickly but not annoyed. 

2. How do you like your popcorn? I dont like popcorn

3. Do you like to read? sometimes. I find reading difficult because dyslexia but when I find the right books that get me totally sucked in then I love it 

4. Have you ever played a Wii? yes I have one. the just dance games are my favourite 

5. Would you ever become a vegetarian? possibly. I only eat chicken, beef and bacon anyway

11. Do you like Mexican food or any other foreign foods? dont think ive had Mexican but it doesn't seem like my type of food. I like Italian the best and a bit of Chinese or Indian

26. Do you own any dresses? If so, what colors are they? Yes at the moment just one, its black with little white and yellow flowers.
