House of Leaves, Chapter 4

Oh what the fuck, Johnny.

No, I don't think it's any coincidence that when the house starts expanding past its bounds so too does the Navidson Record spill into Johnny's life a little more. And that in turn his life spills all over the record.

But also fuck you, Johnny, this entire passage¹ about things in the dark and out of sight is the exact kind of thing that sets my spine on edge. Your girl Maeve here is nocturnal, primarily, so my reading hours are late at night. In a house with lots of dark corners. It came out of nowhere, so high-strung that it's impossible to let go. Like a panic attack. There's so much of me that wants to call it cheap and I can't because I was just as shaken as Johnny. It doesn't help that these are the exact kind of thoughts I used to have as a child, something in the darkness just waiting to lash out.

Is that too much personal story in my review? Good because it's Johnny hours here. While the Navidson/Green family deals with a new door and an incongruous closet, I have to read this passage² about how carefully Johnny wants to preserve the old man's artistic intent, when just recently he changed it out of spite. And then another one³ Where it devolves into a winding sexual... conquest? Seems too grand a word for what happened here. And the first I noticed these hellish run-on sentences of courier font, he really just goes on and on and on. I can speculate why, I suppose. Written in a high, analogous to the uncomfortable run-on of the house, maybe just a rare honesty? I don't know how to call it yet.

Back with the Navidson/Green family. I find it interesting how the house denies them their comforts. It refuses both knowing and unknowing in one... dare I say "elegant", move? We've set up both approaches, defining the space, ignoring the space, covering the space. But instead of allowing one to succeed.

A house divided against itself cannot stand? Trite but it's almost mischievously so. Karen and Will's fixes, the bookshelf and the repeated measuring, both being foiled by the house simply expanding the other way instead is horrific in the kind of way a poltergeist is. Full of humor, but also cunning. And the power to back that cleverness up.

writing a completely insane au for the boys rn and I'm having such a hard time figuring out what age the seven (i.e a-train, the deep, maeve, translucent, noir) are in season 1 specifically and when they all joined the seven (minus homelander and starlight obvi) and i was wondering if you had literally any idea at all

A-Train, Maeve and the Deep are apparently all around the same age. i can't find a source for it, but this article has a whole bunch of birthdays and info. March 1985 for the Deep, March 1986 for Maeve, and January 1987 for A-Train.

they all attended Godolkin, so it's possible they graduated one after another and were each hired by Vought straight out of school. we know A-Train did Teenage Kix before he joined the seven, but career-wise nothing else is mentioned for Maeve and The Deep.

A-Train is the youngest of the bunch and he did replace Mister Marathon, so before Annie, he would have been the newest member.

Translucent is closer to Homelander's age, like 40, which makes sense to me.

they don't have an exact age for Annie, but during s1 her mom says something to the effect of "I've been waiting 23 years for this" so i would assume Annie is 23-24 when she joins the seven.

Noir is more complicated. he appeared to be in his mid-20s in 1984, but he has a healing factor, a power that typically slows aging, so it's hard to say how old he is.

as for when they joined The Seven, according to Diabolical—which i believe takes place around the year 2000—Homelander would have been the founding captain with Noir being the teammate he met first. although Homelander tells Maeve that she's the one he's known the longest, so take that with a grain of salt.

all that said, i'd say the team was formed with Homelander, Black Noir, Queen Maeve, Translucent, The Deep, Lamplighter and Mister Marathon in the early 2000s.

Maeve leaned against the railing, gazing out across the gleaming cityscape as the sunset bathed the skyscrapers in golden light. Up here on the roof of the Delancey Building, the honks and chatter of the streets below faded to a distant hum. She took a deep breath, relishing the solitude high above it all.

A breeze fluttered Maeve's blonde hair as she looked down at the ant-sized cars 40 stories below. She adjusted the straps of her grey tank top, straining to contain her recently enlarged bust. Just six weeks ago, Maeve had been an aspiring model with a modest B cup chest that blended into the crowd. Now, thanks to a clerical error by her surgeon, she sported a pair of cartoonishly huge 4000cc breast implants. WHAT ELAIN "NEEDED" WAS UNDERSTANDING, NOT SUNSHINE

In Chapter 32 of Acowar, we have the scene where Azriel finds out that Elain is a seer :

Lucien murmured to me, eye still fixed on Elain, “Should we—does she need …?”

“She doesn’t need anything,” Azriel answered without so much as looking at Lucien.

Elain was staring at the spymaster now—unblinkingly.

“We’re the ones who need …” Azriel trailed off. “A seer,” he said, more to himself than us. “The Cauldron made you a seer.”

Right after that, in chapter 33, Feyre notices that Elain sounds "normal" again because she finally understands what is happening to her :

Elain turned to Mor, who was now gaping at my sister from her spot beside her on the couch. “Is that what this is?”

And the words, the tone … they were so normal-sounding that my chest tightened.

Mor’s gaze darted across my sister’s face, as if weighing the words, the question, the truth or lie within.

Mor at last blinked, mouth parting. Like that magic of hers had at last solved some puzzle. Slowly, clearly, she nodded.

The clear explanation that what Elain needed was understanding :

“You stole from the Cauldron,” I said to Nesta, who seemed ready to jump between all of us and Elain. “But what if the Cauldron gave something to Elain?”

Nesta’s face drained of color. “What?”

Equally ashen, Lucien seemed inclined to echo Nesta’s hoarse question.

But Azriel nodded. “You knew,” he said to Elain. “About the young queen turning into a crone.”

Elain blinked and blinked, eyes clearing again. As if the understanding, our understanding … it freed her from whatever murky realm she’d been in.

A little bit later, in chapter 40, we see that Elain is getting better and that she started spending time with Nuala & Cerridwen in the kitchen :

Elain stood between Nuala and Cerridwen at the long worktable. All three of them covered in flour. Some sort of doughy mess on the surface before them.

The two handmaiden-spies instantly bowed to Rhys, and Elain—

There was a slight sparkle in her brown eyes.

As if she’d been enjoying herself with them.

Nuala swallowed hard. “The lady said she was hungry, so we went to make her something. But—she said she wanted to learn how, so …” Hands wreathed in shadows lifted in a helpless gesture, flour drifting off them like veils of snow. “We’re making bread.”

Elain was glancing between all of us, and as her eyes began to shutter, I gave her a broad smile and said, “I hope it’ll be done soon—I’m starved.”

Elain offered a faint smile in return and nodded.

She was hungry. She was … doing something. Learning something.

And then Rhys explains to Feyre that she is feeling the same way he felt when she was getting better in Acomaf :

I put a hand on my chest, leaning against the wood panels of the stair wall. Rhys’s hand covered my own a heartbeat later.

“That was what I felt,” he said, “when I saw you smile that night we dined along the Sidra.”

I leaned forward, resting my brow against his chest, right over his heart. “She still has a long way to go.”

“We all do.”

in one of the scenarios, he stated that he was in falling in love for reader and it has been noticeable that he has gotten laid with more/other women in the past.

i would like to know more about how was spencer as a lover back in that time like how he felt after s*x and stuff, like a flashback or something and how his relationship with reader has changed him, his own perspective. so basically in my head he loses his virginity to elle greenaway (DUH) and they actually have a little bit of a relationship but the dynamic isn’t quite right because she’s going through all her own shit and at that time of spencer’s life it’s more simple for him. like she’s his first everything and he’s super in love with her but she is older and more experienced and really cares for him but knows for a lot of reasons that this wide eyed rose tinted view he has of her and their idealized relationship is never going to work out. #ILOVEELLEGREENAWAY but anyway they are never exclusive and in the dybmn universe i think he doesn’t necessarily SLEEP w lilah archer but they hook up in that pool beyond just making out mwaha but he’s just a little guy like he’s not CHEATING on elle because they’re not exclusive but she realizes she’s way too into him and that actually ends up figuring into why she leaves the BAU like yes it’s everything with her trauma too but that’s part of it because she knows she can’t sustain that relationship and being much older than him she’s the responsible party so yeah. i also think that time he visits her hotel room was maybe the last time they hooked up

after that i think he kind of develops a pattern of sleeping with women who are older/more experienced than him because he’s just used to being around older people anyway and he feels he can relate to them better and im imagining this is like seasons 2-4 spencer so it’s him and a bunch of hot 30-40 year old women (and probably men) and he’s just like a slut honestly like he’s really easy because he desperately craves affection and validation and i’d say he continues slutting himself out in that way for many seasons, but slowly with people who are more his age, probably until like around season 8 when he meets maeve and then all that shit happens and he kinda is just not into sex or romance for a long while. and i think after that he occasionally will hook up w someone but his main slut era was like seasons 2-6. (it slowed down when his migraines started but did not stop because he’s unstoppable) (he also may have had an actual relationship during this season 7 period in my mind. idk why i just sense there was someone before maeve. no i will not be providing reasoning season 7 spencer just looks like he has a girlfriend)

anyway. the number of bodies that man has is unknown. it may be a number so high we can’t conceive of it. he’s a capital doubleyew Whore unfortunately. but he’s rlly reigned it in by the time he meets reader which can be whenever you want but i picture it as being anywhere from season 9-14. and i think by the time he meets her he really is like basically celibate. like he hasn’t been with anyone by choice for a long while by the time he meets her. he is a retired slut if you will.

saliently i don’t think he ever does anything with jj. that is a purely imaginative thing for him and he lowkey has a madonna whore complex about her. i don’t think he was ever really in love with her he just loved the idea of the pretty blonde girl loving him back. but that is a whole other thing. and he’s way over it when he meets reader.

n e way those r just my silly thoughts. like i said i don’t think i’m ever gonna fit this into the actual narrative but yeah that’s what ive been imagining!!
