So I didn’t get much space in the endnotes for fic #16 in Wishing for Space Hardware to delve into the game plan for the remaining four parts of the series. Mostly because I felt like regaling everyone with IBO:Gekko trivia and character interpretations in a flailing attempt to raise awareness of the spin-off. But anyway, the point is, I thought I’d make a quick note here to explain in more detail.

Following the same pattern as the previous arc, this final run will consist of two multi-chapter pieces and two single-chapter installments. I’m working on the first story, We Three Kings, as we speak and have a large chunk of the single-chapter counterpart, History of a Catastrophe, already written. My aim is to finish both these by the end of the year. These are essentially two sides of the same story and are where the manure really hits the rotating mechanism in terms of the overarching plot. They’re both fully plotted out, so all the remains is hard graft of putting words on the page.

However, I’m unlikely to begin putting them online immediately on completion. This is because I know what the cliffhanger is going to be and I really don’t want to leave it hanging longer than strictly necessary (I value my skin). Therefore, I’d like to have a crack at finishing the grand finale, Ragnarök in G Minor, before starting to post.

This . . . this is going to be the long one. At least 20 substantial chapters, tying together everything I’ve been setting up over the past (at time of writing) nearly 400000 words. I know the outline and the major plot-beats but there’s a lot left to fill in. Some of that will obviously depend on the exact details I put into the preceding stories, some of it is just a case of me picking which way I want to do things. In any case, I genuinely don’t know how long it’ll take to get shipshape.

All of which is to say that the hiatus/break will be of indeterminate length. Until, I’d say, February at the very earliest.

(The series coda, A Day in the Light, will be trivial to complete in comparison and I will certainly start posting before I finish it, seeing as I’ll have over thirty weeks lead time!)

Having thus hopefully managed expectations for anyone who’s reading the fics and following me here, I’d also like to take a moment to properly credit @stillness-in-green whose fics introduced me to the phrase ‘Ride’s Revolution’ for hypothetical IBO sequels and who coined the phrase ‘Almiria’s Adolescent Apocalypse’ to describe an alternate focus. While neither of these quite describes the direction I’ve taken things, they’ve been knocking around my head ever since as a kind of driving impetus that’s gotten me this far. So cheers for that!
