Already watched the animation many years ago but I read somewhere that the novels definitely added more to the story, be them the extension of the storyline or some additional perspectives from the characters.
Great addition to our home library for their price.

Weathering with You: Review
(this review is SPOILER FREE!!!)
I was lucky enough to see Weathering With You the other day, and just wanted to quickly document my thoughts on it! (/thoughts on Makoto Shinkai’s work as a whole)
Tumblr media
So right off the bat, if you liked Your Name, I’m fairly certain you’d enjoy this movie too. It’s definitely different and its own thing, but in my opinion it still has the same beauty and magic that Makoto Shinkai does best.
I’ve become a big Makoto Shinkai fan recently, watching some of his other films like 5 Centimeters Per Second and Garden of Words, but the fact that most people haven’t heard of those films while Your Name was a worldwide phenomenon is pretty telling of Shinkai’s growth and also skill as a director.
Tumblr media
(gif from 5 Centimeters per Second)
Makoto Shinkai’s work has always been undeniably beautiful. I mean, look at it. If you enjoy animation or enjoy drawing or just enjoy looking at pretty stuff, I’d recommend pretty much anything he’s ever done.
If you actually care about plot and compelling narratives however, I think I’d only be recommending Your Name and Weathering with You. His other films, in my opinion, seem to prioritize style over substance and while they are beautiful, I didn’t get much out of the story.
Tumblr media
(gif from Garden of Words)
However if we’re putting Shinkai’s work was on a scale, Weathering with You is definitely nearer to the Your Name side than any of the others. It takes inspiration from Japanese folklore, has really compelling, cool, and likable characters, and a unique semi-fantastical plot line.
This review quickly turned into a Makoto Shinkai commentary so I’m just gonna wrap it up here. Weathering with You is a beautiful spectacle, and I’d highly recommend seeing it in theaters if you’re lucky enough, but if not, waiting until you can see it online.
Thanks for reading!

5 centimeters per second | Your Name  (gifset1)
The first time I watched Kimi no na wa (Your Name), I was struck with the realisation that some of the scenes are just so similar to the ones in 5 cm per second. At that moment, I was quite afraid if the ending would also be the same.

How bittersweet it is, the distance that exists between human beings. An ache to the heart and yet beautiful. A part of us will always belong to someone else. Is it painful ? Being a memory of someone forever ? Being not with them when they are happy ? Being not with them when they are devastated ? Is love the greatest pain one can ask for ? Or is it the love which went in vain more scathing to the heart ?⁣ ⁣ Out of all the romantic relationships one has in their lives, first love is the most impactful. How sweet it was to see her, to hold her hands, to be able to love, to be loved, to be there for her and how agonizing it was when it ended. Abruptness all over. A state of loneliness surrounded by the walls of love and chaos where everything was falling apart. Worst of all, you can not do anything about it now. It's over. Time slipped by and it will never come back. It's lost. The touch, that scent, the feeling and everything. It's all lost in the mist. Going into this film, you can expect one thing for sure, heartbreak. It shows us that how with the passing of time, feelings can fade away, those vibrant emotions you had once are now nowhere to be found. How unaware we are of other's feelings when we are in love. And how not all love will be realised. Makoto Shinkai shows us that to convey emotion, one doesn't need to rely on tears or screaming. He purely relies on subtlety. He keeps the movie down to earth without being melodramatic or cliche. ⁣ How cruel can unrequited love be ? ⁣ How cruel can the reality be ? ⁣ How cruel it is to not be able to forget someone ?⁣ ⁣ "5 cm per second" is the epitome of what is achievable in storytelling and art. The rich words used for narration is what makes it more profound and elegant. It's realistic and relatable and that's why it hurts more. There couldn't be a more fitting ending to this film. On a final note, it's worth mentioning that the title couldn't be more complete. Depending on your perspective, that speed can be too slow or too fast for falling cherry blossoms. ⁣ It's a distant metaphor, but a fitting one.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ .⁣ #anime #makotoshinkai #love #animediscussion #animeanalysis #yourname #5cmpersecond #animetalkies (at India) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9qs5nFlzUI/?igshid=13mnr5dc60zuq
